The Crushed Stone Industry plays an important role in Pennsylvania's mineral economy. During 1965, the total production of crushed and broken stone in the United States reached 780 million tons from which 57 million tons were produced in Pennsylvania (Mineral Industries Surveys, 1966). It is further significant that Pennsylvania is the nation's leading crushed stone producer. Future trends in stone production will quite likely parallel those in the construction industry. Stone and stone products are finding greater and more varied uses each year. Continued record expenditures for structures such as dams, highways and buildings are the prime reasons for this accelerated growth in demand. Completion of the interstate road system and the maintenance of Pennsylvania's already expanded highway system form the essentials for this expanding market.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of using silica sand as a grinding media in stirred ball mills for ultra-fine coal grinding. Laboratory batch as well as bench scale continuous tests indicate that the use of silica sand can reduce the energy consumption by 50% and more over its steel media counter-part. Moreover, this approach has been found to eliminate the disadvantages observed with grinding using steel media such as high replacement cost, contamination of coal through media wear, greater degree of coal oxidation due to higher slurry temperature and greater level of noise dissipation. Additionally, coal-sand attrition system reduces the manpower time required which is often spent towards cleaning and storing of steel media in inert atmosphere to avoid rust and corrosion problems.

Injecting water under pressure to wet the coalbed in advance of mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Owing to economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is currently limited to the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob gas boreholes. Computer coalbed reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed.

Tectonic activity in northern New Mexico during late Oligocene and early Miocene time presaged events which led to the development of molybdenite deposits at Questa. East-northeast directed crustal extension produced north-northwest striking tensional fracture systems paralleling the early Rio Grande rift. A sequence of Oligocene andesite flows and breccias is overlain by a thick early Miocene rhyolite ash-flow tuff. Eruption of the tuff initiated collapse of the Questa cauldron: the south margin of which occurs as an east-northeast striking, north-dipping structurally weak zone. Continued east-northeast post-cauldron extension permitted the high level emplacement of granite stocks with coeval rotational deformation of fault blocks composed of cauldron fill and [ ] floor. The stocks occupy north-northwest fracture zones in the south margin of the cauldron, and porphyry dikes occupy east- northeast striking faults that define the south margin. These two fracture systems have played a dominant role in localizing the intrusive porphyries and associated mineral deposits at Questa. A molybdenite-bearing breccia matrix and related stockwork mineralization generally occur within volcanic rocks. Mineral deposits are spatially related to fault zones and the upper con- tact of their source intrusives. Deposits are localized in fault zones up to several thousand feet long and 100 to 500 feet in diameter. Magmatic-hydrothermal solutions from the source aplite porphyries have produced potash metasomatic alteration which is strongly centered on the mineral and ore zones. Alteration in ore is represented by orthoclase, quartz and secondary biotite. This pattern grades into secondary biotite and propylitic zones forming successively weaker alteration assemblages away from ore. Younger phyllic and argillic assemblages are particularly widespread only where strong north-northwest extensional fracture zones cross the south cauldron margin.

The high speed conveyor type self unloading bulk carrier concept has been around for about 70 years. Although the design was developed, refined and steadily improved in the Great Lakes, to date limited numbers of such vessels have emerged in the bulk ocean trades, and these have tended to concentrate within specific mineral trades. For example, North American gypsum companies have embraced conveyor self unloaders to the point where such vessels almost exclusively carry the gypsum requirements of this part of the world. One major aluminum company has developed an impressive fleet capability in self unloaders. Application of other ships tends to be fragmented through several mineral trades. A few years ago a new phenomonen began to appear on the Great Lakes. Whereas it had historically been accepted in that region that self unloaders were effective vessels for the minor bulk trades including limestone, coal, salt, gravel and sand; they had seldom been employed heavily in the big volume iron ore trades. Suddenly, however, the new generation of 60,000 ton Lakers which emerged were all designed as high speed self unloaders. The new vessels intended to trade especially in ore, or alternatively especially in coal, have somewhat different internal features, but the important point is that all are self unloaders.

"Slurry Microtunneling is a well-established technology building on over 20 years of experience in successful tunnel installations under all kinds of soil conditions across the U.S. and Canada. Recent microtunnel installations prove that initial hesitation, e.g. curved drives, is fading and long-distance pipe jacking projects as well as lake outfalls are being considered. One of the younger technologies is Direct Pipe®, which combines the benefits of HDD and Slurry Microtunneling. It fits exactly into the area where HDD is not feasible or too risky to apply. The paper points out the benefits of the Direct Pipe® technology for owners, engineers and contractors and discusses the latest developments of Slurry Microtunneling for long-distance, curved drives and sea/lake outfalls with wet recovery of the equipment such as on the ‘Keswick Outfall Project’ in Ontario. The first Direct Pipe® installation in the US was executed in August 2010. Since then, another 22 crossings have been carried out amongst a total of more than 60 Direct Pipe® crossings worldwide. INTRODUCTION Pipelines installed underground are indispensable for supplying the growing world population with water, oil, gas and electricity, for removing wastewater and for providing functioning telephone and communications networks. During recent years the limits of trenchless applications have been permanently shifted, leading to higher and more stringent project requirements and consequently new technologies, either as further development of existing methods, or through the development of new methods by incorporating elements of proven technologies. MICROTUNNELING TRENDS IN NORTH AMERICA Slurry Microtunneling has a wider geological application range in comparison to EPB and hard rock Microtunneling. The Slurry MTBM can be equipped with specific cutting wheels to cope with different soil conditions. The most flexible and most often employed type is the mixed soil cutting wheel, which contains a mixture of disc cutters as well as scrapers for varying soil conditions from cohesive soils (clay, silts) to highly permeable soils including sands, gravels and cobbles and even hard ground formations such as rock and boulders. A detailed geotechnical report provides the appropriate data to configure the MTBM and its features to the ground conditions expected. Mixshield or hydroshield (AVN/AVND) MTBMs in particular, can be safely operated with little overburden (~ 3-5 x machine diameter) and minimum risk of frac-out or settlement on the surface. This is especially beneficial in urban areas with sensitive buildings or for river crossings with protected fish habitats."

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is the fourth panel cave mine in the East Ertsberg Skarn System, (EESS) which lies 500 m below the producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and up to 1,700 m below the surface. The interaction between the DMLZ and DOZ is occurring as the DMLZ cave grows vertically toward the DOZ footprint. During this process, a rapid change in the global mine system stress is anticipated. This change is forecasted to drive substantial changes in the magnitude and direction of principal stresses in the DMLZ and DOZ mines at PT Freeport Indonesia. These changes will bring the mine system closer to the ultimate capacity of the excavations and can result in significant impacts to mine stability if not managed. Critical to this management, is understanding cave growth and locations, as well as how these changes will impact stress conditions.

DC Water’s Clean Rivers (DCCR) program involves the construction of approximately 29 km (18 mi) of CSO tunnels in Potomac Group soils in the Washington DC area. Soils include an upper predominantly over-consolidated fine grained plastic material facies (P/A) and lower predominantly coarsegrained facies (PTX). As earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are mainly used in such soils, the correct approach to soil conditioning can make a considerable difference in TBM performance. Soil conditioning laboratory tests are often completed during the planning phase prior to TBM excavation to develop a baseline for soil conditioning, reduce risks, minimize costs, and improve performance. However, only a few basic tests are standardized to date, and conditioning regimes are fine-tuned during the mining phase. The paper illustrates the effort carried out to identify the correct soil conditioning regime for both PA and PTX facies to improve TBM overall performance and reduce ground movement during the excavation of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) in Washington DC.

Watertightness is of central importance in hydraulic and underground structures but has always been associated with a risk, as demonstrated by the very high impact that water inflows have on the damage of linings and infrastructure (Howard, 1991; Sandrone and Labiouse, 2011). Concrete is vulnerable to groundwater and chemical contaminants in the soil. These can leach into the pores and cracks of the concrete and degrade its integrity, causing spalling and corroding the reinforcing steel. Moisture migrating into the building can also degrade structural elements over time and lead to mold and other hazards to occupants’ health. In this connection, the demands placed on the setup and detailed design of the seal depending on the negative influence by water on the one hand and on the other hand on the function of a construction in view to its watertightness classification. Thus, the reliable functioning of a seal is of particular significance in the case of traffic tunnels, which are not easily accessible for all subsequent repairs after the construction in seepage water and especially when located in a pressure water zone (risk–cost assessment). Requirements for the long-term efficiency and quality of underground structures have increased in recent decades. Today, the standard lifetime requirement for an underground infrastructure project is 100 to 120 years and, in some cases, even higher. This calls for high increased attention to the durability of the whole structure and of each individual element. Standards, which started as application guidelines given by the manufacturers, are available in the market since the 1980s and are constantly adapted to the current developments in various technical committees. Differentiations are made between: Manufactures application guidelines, case studies or published articles Test standards for the laboratory to guideline the testing procedures (air temperature, type of test equipment, dimensions, test speed, test duration, concentration, type of liquids, monitoring, tolerances, interpretation of results, documentation, etc.), developed by committees based on material and laboratory experts Application standards, which include test standards but also the related minimum performance requirements (values) for material, processing, and quality assurance (practical tolerances), developed by committees based on a wide range of experts (e.g., designers, construction companies, applicators, manufactures, owners, test institutes, quality engineers) and therefore also based on a wide field of experience, different views and up-dated case studies. Two of the open-pit, copper-molybdenum mining operations of Duval Corporation are located in the foothills of the Sierrita Mountains approximately 30 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona. In March 1959, mining from a moderate sized porphyry deposit known as the "Esperanza orebody" was begun at a rate of 10,000 tons of ore per day. Some five years later, a sizeable group of mineral claims west of Esperanza became available to Duval. Earlier exploration and development drilling in this area by others indicated an orebody of greater size but lower tenor than that of Esperanza. A drilling program conducted by Duval not only verified the results of the prior drilling but in addition, revealed a continuation of the mineralization to the south and east. Thus was developed the Sierrita orebody. Open pit design delineated 414 million tons of ore containing an average copper content of 0.35 percent and a molybdenum content of 0.036 percent. In April 1966, the office of Emergency Planning authorized General Services Administration to undertake a program under the Defense Production Act to en¬courage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national defense. Duval's Sierrita Project was brought to GSA's attention in May 1966 on November 28, 1967, an agreement providing for the development of the Sierrita Property was consummated with GSA. In March 1970, the first copper-molybdenum concentrates were produced in the 72,000 tons-per-day concentrator. Pre-production stripping exceeded the scheduled 105 million tons despite the comparatively short lead time available to equip the mine, build the mine plant facilities, and staff the technical, supervisory, and labor forces. Shortly before the first concentrates were produced, plans were being formulated for a program to increase processing capacity by approximately 15 percent, which entailed increasing overall mining capacity by approximately 50,000 tons per day. This program is scheduled for completion early in 1971.

This study outlines implemented tactics and results for community empowerment through participation in questionnaire surveys, educational programs, and discussion on sustainable sourcing from new critical raw materials (CRMs) projects. Utilising questionnaire surveys, including the Public Participation Geographic Information System (PPGIS), the research gathered public opinions from Estonia, Germany, Poland, and Zambia, receiving 1,068 responses. These responses addressed various social, economic, and environmental issues related to CRM projects. Feedback from educational courses with participants from over 25 nations and public events provided additional insights. The collected data and feedback offer crucial input for advancing sustainable and responsible CRM sourcing strategies in these regions.

Seeking to implement the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management to improve the safety of their tailings facilities across the globe, mining companies are motivated to invest in new technologies to recover valuable minerals from tailings. One solution being evaluated is the use of magnetic separators to concentrate ultrafine tailings. However, this approach is energy intensive as it requires high magnetic fields to recover ultrafines, and usually results in low mass yields. Additives that modify pulp rheology and surface properties, or selective flocculate ultrafine particles, were tested to enhance the performance of magnetic separation. Promising results in laboratory scale testing different types of additives confirmed that it is possible to increase the mass yield, keeping the selectivity of this stage.

In discussing so-called "volume rates" for the movement of coal, I start from one basic premise: That it is the job of the railroads to devise rates which will move the traffic, while at the same time assuring a fair return on their investment. No matter how reasonable and nondiscriminatory freight rates may be, if they fail to attract and hold traffic to the rails, they are utterly useless - both to the carriers and the shipping public. And it will be my purpose here to show that under certain circumstances the use of volume rates by the railroads enables them. to hold traffic which would otherwise be lost, and to avoid needless dissipation of revenues, Properly employed, volume rates should benefit both the coal industry and the railroads, I do not, however, advocate the discarding of the carload as the basic rate-making unit. Far from it. Sound operating reasons dictate the making of rates based on car- loads, and the tradition of carload rates has a firm foundation in railroad operating costs, many of which vary directly with cars handled. In short, the carload was, Is and, in my opinion, will continue to be the basis for most rail rates on coal, as well as on other commodities. But change is an inevitable result of progress, and we should not be so bound by tradition that we are unwilling to try novel methods of ate making, should the circumstances require, The modern rate maker must, now and then, run the risk of being called an iconoclast if he is to keep up with the times. As T will point out, volume rates were for many years rejected by both the Interstate Commerce Commission and the railroads, But now both the Commission and the carriers have come to recognize that under proper circumstances and conditions volume rates are a powerful and effective tool.

Lack of visibility from large, open-pit haulage truck cabs has become a serious safety problem. Anaconda conducted a research program to develop a low cost system to alert haulage truck operators to small vehicles present in blind areas. Several systems were developed and tested. As open-pit haulage truck size has increased, so has the size of the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and cars are concealed within these blind areas and become safety hazards. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 136 t (150-ton) haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. In these "no visibility" areas many small vehicles have been crushed by large haulage trucks at various mine sites. In most instances, the occupants escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed. But injuries and death have occurred. In most cases, the accidents were attributed to negligence or carelessness by the small vehicle driver. The limited visibility problem still exists, though, and a solution is needed. Initial Solution The usual plane mirror on the driver's side and the convex mirror on the right front of the haulage truck allow only limited rear visibility. The typical, right side convex mirror is generally small and difficult to locate at a glance. This convex mirror also presents an image that distorts distance perception. These mirrors are of¬ten broken and immediate replacement not demanded or made. The US Bureau of Mines, in a contract with M.B. Associates, San Ramon, CA, developed an improved visibility system. It consisted of a larger, left view mirror and unique, blind area viewer. The large 230 x 690 mm (9 x 27 in.) left mirror has a small convex spot mirror near the bottom. The entire unit can be quickly replaced if broken. The large size provides a full view of driver orientation features such as the rear tire and the top of the load bed. The right 300 x 410 mm (12 x 16 in.) mirror has a convex surface and is quite rugged. The 510 mm (20 in.) spherical radius presents the operator with some distance distortion, but objects in its view are easily seen. The "blind area viewer" consists of a modified fresnel lens that allows the driver to "look around the corner." Installation of three of these lenses on the front of each haulage truck is rec¬ommended for adequate blind area coverage. This system significantly increases an operator's field of view and allows viewing of objects within about 3 m (9.8 ft of the truck. Many open-pit mines are nor mounting on smaller vehicles a long whip with a flag and lamp or both. This increases vehicle visibility to haulage truck operators. The whip is permanently attached to the mine vehicle. It can also be magnetically attached to transient vehicles. The whip system. though, is inadequate for visibility in the critical rear and right front blind areas. Alternate Solutions All of these visibility aids as¬sume an attentive driver. In addi¬tion, areas such as the rear blinc, area are not covered. Based on the inadequacy of existing visibility systems, Anaconda made a com mitment to further the truck de¬tection technology. The best ap¬proach was considered to be ar active system. It would notify the haulage truck operator that an en¬croaching vehicle is present. Sev¬eral systems were considered, in¬cluding ultrasonics and elec¬tromagnetics. For the ultrasonic system, com mercial and in-house design were looked at. Designing an( building transducers with the spe cific beam shape to match the haulage truck blind spots re¬quired a major technological breakthrough. False alarms ap¬peared difficult to prevent en¬tirely. They were caused by pass¬ing, trailing, or leading vehicles a., well as nonthreatening objects. INTRODUCTION Variations of cut-and-fill stoping are the most com¬monly used methods for mining narrow, nearly vertical veins in the United States. These methods offer the best results for maximum recovery with minimum dilution of ore from veins that are irregular along either the strike or dip. The vein is developed along the strike length in 61 to 122-m (200 to 400-ft) blocks or stopes and vertical lifts of 48 to 61 m (160 to 200 ft). The level development is either on the vein or parallel to the vein with crosscuts intersecting the vein at right angles. Chutes, manways, and haulageways are established in the center of the stopes at the lower level of the ore block. Mining then proceeds by blasting down horizon¬tal cuts of the vein in both directions from the chutes. As the blasting continues to the outer limits of the stope, the broken ore is slushed into chutes. When a complete horizontal cut has been made, the service raise, including chutes, is raised to a height of a few feet from the back and the stope is filled with either sand fill or waste rock. Then the mining cycle is re¬peated until the stope reaches the level above. LEVEL DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES FOROVERHAND CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The two basic methods used are: the development of the haulage drift within the vein, or development of the haulage drift paralleling the vein in the foot or hang¬ing wall with crosscuts intersecting the vein perpendicu¬larly at 61 to 122-m (200 to 400-ft) intervals. The il¬lustrated methods of development show some of the variations which can be used to develop a stope block. Development for cut-and-fill stoping does not require the more elaborate schemes outlined for shrinkage or sublevel long-hole stoping. Many factors must be considered before deciding on a particular development plan and usually the nature of the vein or host rock will dictate which specific method to use. If the vein is relatively straight, then develop¬ment on the vein is feasible. Excessive ground pressures will necessitate the leaving of a sill pillar (Fig. la) and highly fractured or "heavy" ground will require timber¬ing (Fig. 1b). Development on the vein has the advan¬tage of reducing capital outlay and waste handling prob¬lems since the mined rock has value. But removal of the sill pillar is costly and time-consuming. Also, where no sill pillar is left, excessive timbering and subsequent level repair is a drawback. Development in either the footwall or hanging wall is the more common procedure and offers greater flexi¬bility in overall development of consecutive stoping blocks by partially disassociating the level development from stoping (Fig. 2). Chutes, manways, and service compartments com¬prise the next stage of development and are established in a variety of ways. They provide access to the stope, ventilation ducts, and muck removal. Several different development systems are in common use and average costs for each have been developed. Raise borers are used to establish ventilation and ac¬cess from level to level. They are normally reamed with 1.5 or 1.8-m (5 or 6-ft) cutterhead and may either be left bald or lined with a 1.2-m (4-ft) diam corrugated liner plate, depending upon ground conditions. The use of an Alimak raise climber is another effec¬tive method of driving a raise from level to level. The size usually is 2 m (7 ft) square. This will accommodate square-set timber which is later installed. This method of raising is not common, although it is a valuable tech¬nique especially when level spacing is several hundred feet.

INTRODUCTION The two basic types of mine-air compressors are the positive-displacement compressors and the dynamic compressors. Positive-displacement compressors con¬fine successive volumes of air within a closed space and increase the pressure by reducing the volume of that space. Reciprocating and rotary compressors operate on this principle. Dynamic compressors utilize an impeller to acceler¬ate the air, with the increased air velocity converted to pressure through a stationary diffuser. Centrifugal compressors and turbocompressors operate on this principle. Reciprocating Compressors Reciprocating compressors include both single-stage and multistage units. For mine service the most com¬mon is the two-stage intercooled compressor having an atmospheric pressure intake and a discharge pressure of 689 to 861 kPa (100 to 125 psi). The cylinders of a reciprocating compressor may be either single acting or double acting. In the single-acting cylinder, compression occurs on only one side of the piston, while, in double¬acting cylinders, compression occurs on both sides of the piston. Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view of a typical two-stage double-acting water-cooled reciprocat¬ing compressor. Fig. 2 illustrates the sequence of opera¬tions occurring in the cylinder of a reciprocating com¬pressor. Most modern mine compressors are double acting and are driven by electric motors. Induction motors are used on low-powered compressors, and synchronous motors are used on larger compressors. Steam-driven compressors once were common and still are applied where a reliable source of low-cost steam is available. For this type of compressor, steam is a desirable power source since a governor that senses the discharge pres¬sure can be used to control the steam inlet. This can be used to regulate the compressor speed to compress only air sufficient to meet the mine's requirements (up to the capacity of the unit). Unlike a constant-speed electric¬driven compressor, no other regulation is required for the cylinders of a steam-driven unit. Rotary Compressors Rotary compressors include sliding-vane, liquid¬piston, two-impeller straight-lobe or cycloidal, and helical-lobe units. Each of these has specific advantages and applications. Of these, the helical-lobe or "screw" compressor has the greatest application for supplying "100-lb air" [689 kPa (100 psi) ] to small- and medium¬size underground mines. Fig. 3 illustrates the operation of a sliding-vane compressor. Fig. 4 illustrates the operation of a helical lobe or screw compressor. Fig. 5 illustrates the operation of a two-impeller straight-lobe compressor. Fig. 6 illustrates the operation of a liquid¬piston compressor. Centrifugal Compressors Centrifugal compressors deliver 0.94 m3/s (2000 cfm) or more of air, and they are best suited to supply¬ing large volumes of compressed air for base loads. The efficiency of a centrifugal compressor declines rapidly when its operation deviates from its design point. If the power cost is not a critical consideration, a centrif¬ugal compressor is attractive as a result of the low initial and installation costs and the high degree of reliability. Fig. 7 illustrates a typical four-stage centrif¬ugal compressor, and Fig. 8 is a cross section of this type of unit. COMPRESSOR SELECTION The process of selecting a compressor requires sev¬eral considerations, including the capacity, the control system, the location, the power supply, and the cooling provisions. Compressor Capacity To determine the required capacity, the total air quantity and pressure requirements must be calculated. The air consumption of various tools, as listed in Table 1, must be included in this calculation. Some of the other considerations include: 1) The correction factor for altitude, as listed in Table 2, must be included in the calculation. While pneumatic tools require additional compressed air as the altitude increases, the compressor produces less. 2) A correction factor must be incorporated for the use of multiple tools. Table 3 lists appropriate correc¬tion factors for rock drills.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the first MPD Student Video Contest during the spring of 2021. The event showcased the work of 18 graduate and undergraduate students from several U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when students submitted a onepage abstract for judging. Over the next several months, they developed a three-minute video that further explained their research findings. Both the abstract and video were evaluated by a panel of judges, and the top-placing participant was recognized at an MPD virtual event held on June 10.

Can the United States mining industry achieve its long-stated goal of zero fatalities ? and what will it take to do so? Does it require new laws and regulations, as some propose, and a continuation of the commandand- control model that has been born out of more than 40 years of regulation and enforcement under the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1969? Or, is it time to consider a new model to manage safety and health and drive continuous, sustained improvement? These are questions that many are debating as mine safety performance, while improved, appears mired in a trough where improvement followed by declines seems to have become the rule rather than the exception. Without doubt, U.S. mines have made significant progress in safety performance during the last four decades, yet the stalled decline in fatality numbers, the industry?s report card of its success or failure, has led some to question whether the industry will achieve zero fatalities in U.S. mining by relying solely on the Mine Act?s framework and implementing its regulations. These are questions the CEO-led task force, set up by the National Mining Association (NMA), considered as it sought to identify impediments to zero fatalities posed by the current regulatory regime. Out of that effort came CORESafety, a common safety and health framework that relies on a management system approach to improve safety and health performance. The goal of CORESafety is to achieve zero fatalities and a 50-percent reduction in the rate of injuries in U.S. mining within five years ? 0:50:5. CORESafety is built on the plan-do-checkact model, which has been successfully deployed by industries, mining and nonmining alike, to drive continuous improvement in safety and health performance. The improvements in safety performance that can be achieved by shifting from a command-and-control regulatory approach to a risk-based systems approach built on the plando- check-act model have been documented in numerous industries. For example, the United Kingdom quarrying industry (Fig. 1), not satisfied with the number of reportable accidents being experienced 1995-2000, established a hard target of a 50-percent reduction in the number of reportable accidents during the period 2001- 2005. Having met this target, the industry then established a further target zero for the period 2006-2010. The mechanism to achieve these reductions? The plan-do-check-act model.

As evidenced by Calandra’s more than 20 patents on ground control devices (not to mention the additional 80 patents his companies hold), his innovation and commitment to safety have made underground mining safer and more efficient. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Calandra was instrumental in upgrading American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards in roof control for both state and federal regulations. Through his work with industry associations such as the National Mining Association, National Coal Council and Center for Energy and Economic Development, among others, Calandra has contributed his time, expertise and financial support to ensure a balanced political and regulatory climate for mining. Calandra is an inductee of the West Virginia Coal Hall of Fame."
