Colorado has recorded more than 100 years of industrial mineral production. Much of the state's history, culture, and economy is based in mining, but the industrial minerals and construction materials comprising the nonmetallics sector of the industry very often are overlooked or overshadowed by mineral fuels and the metals. Indeed, many of these materials find use in seemingly unimportant industrial applications essential to our economy and life style and yet are not so recognized by the consumer. Unlike many other mineral resources, the numerous industrial minerals occur in many different and often exotic geologic environments, some of which are characteristic only of the western states. In Colorado only a few of these minerals have continued production through the years; many saw only "boom" periods or other critical times of need, such as the world wars. The changing needs and demands of our society in the 1980s will stimulate yet another era of intensive activity in our industrial minerals storehouse. Researchers are finding new uses and applications for these materials in dealing with the energy crisis and fuel shortages, the need to develop domestic mineral reserves of all kinds, and the goals of reuse and recycling. Some of Colorado's little-used and unused industrial minerals hold extraordinary promise in solving some of these problems on the regional and national levels. In this paper we will look at the history of development of Colorado's more prominent nonmetallics and especially at current research on and future potential of several other commodities among which Colorado contains the largest known reserves.

Grinding mills, both autogenous and ball can be powered by several basic means. The three methods used today are girth gear drives, gearless drives and trunnion coupled reducers. This paper will focus on the first of these methods -girth gear drives. The girth gear drive has been used on thousands of mills which continue to operate successfully. These drives are noted for their simplicity and low cost. In the past, the horsepower capacity of girth gears has been slow to keep up with the horsepower increase required by the mill builders, particularly since the advent of the SAG mill. Gear manufacturers had capacity for 2000 HP mills in the 1950's, 5000 HP in the 1960's and 6500 horsepower in the 1970's. The 70's and 80's brought dual pinion girth gear drives which allowed mill sizes beyond 10,000 horsepower. Gear manufactures who could not keep up with the pace of the horsepower demands and the quality and reliability demanded by the mill builders and users have fallen by the wayside.

Increased productivity in the U.S. underground coal industry has taxed pre-existing conveyor belt haulage systems. The usual remedies are costly and can disrupt production. A reduction in the belt feeder discharge rate on mobile haulage sections results in more uniform loading and reduces the spillage vulnerability. An investigation is made to determine the effect, if any, on shuttle car discharge time arising from lower feeder discharge rates. A five-section, underground mine is visualized, and belt spillage is introduced. The sectional feeder discharge rate is progressively lowered until spillage is precluded. At each level, the simulated spillage is measured and compared to the loss in face production. Methods of predicting the loss in face production from lower feeder discharge rates are discussed.

A common casualty of modern open pit mine optimization is the assurance that the resulting design is actually achievable. Optimized mine plans that consider value and a bare minimum of precedence constraints do not, in general, translate into practical, operational mine designs that can really be used in the field. Ultimate pits may come to a sharp point at the bottom. Schedules may require taking small parcels of material from many disparate areas of the pit in a single period. And grade control polygons may be ragged, narrow, and not minable with realistic equipment. In this paper all of these problems are addressed by encoding these three fundamental open pit mine optimization problems as maximum satisfiability problems. Maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for problems that are non-linear and may guarantee the optimality that metaheuristics cannot. INTRODUCTION Open pit mines are large and complicated operations, which require significant initial and ongoing investment. A single mine may employ hundreds or thousands of people and creates substantial benefits for both the surrounding and global communities. Planning an operation of this magnitude requires a lot of effort and cannot be done optimally by hand. Mining engineers today rely on many techniques from operations research to guide decision making, and to maximize the value of the mine. Techniques including linear programming, metaheuristics, and network algorithms are all used to solve different problems throughout mine design and optimization. However, techniques based on Boolean satisfiability, including the optimization extension of maximum satisfiability, have not seen much use in mining despite being used in many other fields including electronics design, scheduling, and artificial intelligence. We claim that maximum satisfiability is a useful and meaningful way of expressing and solving optimization problems in mine planning. However, this technique does not come without challenges; the problem is NP-hard, and modern techniques for solving these problems can struggle with the number of variables and clauses that a typical mining problem requires. Also, some of the constraints that mining must contend with do not fit nicely into the satisfiability paradigm. Despite these challenges, we believe that maximum satisfiability provides a useful framework for considering operational constraints and expressing some problems that other techniques can't easily express. Maximum satisfiability can be solved exactly, yielding the true optimal answer which metaheuristics cannot guarantee. In this paper we show the applicability of maximum satisfiability to mining by specifying three fundamental problems in open pit mine optimization. We show how these fundamental problems can be formulated and how they can be extended within the framework of maximum satisfiability. For the remainder of the paper we first give a brief background on common elements between the three problems and an introduction to satisfiability. Then we tackle the three problems; the Ultimate Pit Problem, the Block Scheduling Problem, and the Grade Control Polygon Problem. In the Ultimate Pit Problem we specifically show how to extend the problem to support a minimum mining width – a coveted result for many mining engineers. We then discuss some of the complexities and shortcomings of this framework and possible research directions.

A major thrust in Industrial automation over the past few years has been the exploration and incorporation of higher level (supervisory and optimizing) control strategies aimed at more fully exploiting the existing control system infrastructure. There is little doubt that this is worthwhile pursuit, however, one must not lose sight of the maintenance and development requirements of the basic control system. Statistics on loop performance indicate that this too is an area of considerable potential. In this paper the authors look at some of the less elegant, but arguably equally important issues in mineral processing plant control. The focus is on controller structures, loop tuning, sampling, filtering, and some of the other principal components of the regulatory control foundations. In many cases significant improvements In control performance can be achieved by getting back to the basics.

Feeders are used to provide a means of control for the withdrawal of bulk materials from storage units, such as bins, bunkers, silos and hoppers. This control function can only be performed properly as long as the bulk materials flow by gravity to the feeder in a uniform and uninterrupted fashion. A feeder can do many things, but it should never be considered a suction pump: During the past few years various papers have been written and presented on feeders and their application. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9)* It is not the intent of this paper to cover the same ground, and the readers are therefore ad¬vised to consult the referenced publications for supplementary information. This paper will be confined to some specific design criteria of bin feeders, such as feeder load and power requirements. Special attention is given to the basic design criteria of vibratory feeders.

It has been 2-1/2 years since the Congress passed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (PL95-87) the Office of Surface Mining every deadline specified in the Act. Hopefully the Congress will begin to realize that specifying unrealistic deadlines does not accomplish the end desire of legislation any sooner -- it only adds to the confusion, and actually hinders orderly, efficient progress. OSM has been sued by all categories of involved parties -- environmental activitist organizations, the states, and the coal operators. This situation has resulted for two reasons: (1) insufficient time was allotted by the Congress to properly develop the regulations and program, and (2) OSM?s philosophy that it must dictate every detail of reclamation operations from Washington, even though many of its people are inexperienced with coal mining. These law- suits are now demonstrating their value. OSM is showing signs of "pulling-in-its horns" and, hopefully, will approach the revised regulations in a more realistic fasion.

Chile is at present the largest copper and rhenium producer and was before World War I the largest nitrate producer. She is also an important producer of lithium carbonate and molybdenum oxide. An important event in the history of the country is the Pacific War of 1879-1883 in which she acquired the northern provinces initially belonged to Bolivia and Peru. In 1888 Chile annexed Easter Island. The Chilean mineral and cultural history is briefly reviewed together with the people who contributed to her development. The present report is the result of a number of academic and industrial visits to Chile during the period 1992 to 2009.

Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls and Jennmar high-strength (HS) stopping panel walls are widely used for resisting high-ventilation air pressures and roof support in underground mines due to their installation efficiency, convergence allowance, and better performance than traditional concrete block stopping walls. Based on the different entry dimensions and required maximum ventilation air pressures of up to 36-in. water gauge, 24-, 27-, 30-, and 36-in.-diameter pumpable J-Crib stopping walls, or 18- to 30-in. thick Jennmar HS stopping panel walls can be designed, and their support capacities and convergence allowances are evaluated for better roof control. Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls consist of 0.187-in.-diameter steel wire reinforced, JCrib material-filled bags, and non-wire-reinforced filler bags in between. Jennmar HS stopping panel walls consist of two, 20-gauge (0.04-in.-thick), galvanized, cold-formed steel panels with J-Seal materials pumped in between. Based on the fundamental structural design principles and specifications of ACI 318-19(22), the compression and flexural strength, and shear resistance of the walls can be checked to be compliant with the codes and specifications following the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method. Specifically, the 0.187- in.-diameter steel wires in the pumpable J-Crib walls and 20-gauge steel panels in the HS stopping walls are integral parts of the walls and are considered to effectively confine the J-Crib or J-Seal materials. These steel elements play a significant role in reinforcing and improving the strength or support capacity of the stopping walls from a structural design perspective. Because of the high ductility of low-density J-Crib/J-Seal materials and steel elements, these walls are good at accommodating or absorbing the roof convergence (≥5% entry height), which cannot be matched by a traditional concrete block stopping wall (Figure 1). Based on the successful design and application of these stopping walls in different mines for improving roof stability and avoiding the air leakage, the authors have formulated the design methodology and verified independently by the finite element analysis (FEA) simulation technique. This design methodology combines the fundamental structural design principles with specific wall dimensions and material properties, facilitating mine engineers and government agencies to understand the in-depth working mechanism of these stopping walls.

"Fiber reinforcement has emerged as an alternative to steel bars in precast concrete segments due to advantages such as saving cost and reducing production time while developing a more robust product with improved handling and long-term durability. ACI recently drafted a new report as the first design guideline on FRC tunnel segments to provide specific guidance for this emerging technology. ACI document offers general information on the history of FRC precast segments from tunneling projects throughout the world; a procedure for structural analysis and design based on governing load cases, and a description of the material parameters, tests and analyses required to complete the design. This paper summarizes the design considerations in this ACI guideline prepared by the authors of this paper as the main contributors. Application of this guideline to design of a tunnel with an internal diameter of 5.5 m (18 ft) results in elimination of steel bars.INTRODUCTIONPrecast concrete segments are installed to support the tunnel excavation behind the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in soft ground and weak rock applications. The TBM advances by thrusting off the completed rings of precast concrete segments that provide both the initial and final ground support as part of a one-pass lining system. These segments are typically designed to resist the permanent loads from the ground and groundwater as well as the temporary loads from production, transportation and construction. Tunnel segments are generally reinforced to resist the tensile stresses at both the Serviceability (SLS) and the Ultimate Limit States (ULS). With traditional rebar, a significant amount of labor is needed to assemble the cages and place the rebar, which results in higher production costs.Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) can be used to enhance the production, handling, and placement of precast concrete segments. This is because of the uniform dispersion of fibers throughout the segment to include the concrete cover, which is very advantageous for resisting the bursting and spalling stresses. These stresses develop as a result of the high loads induced on the segments during the TBM jacking process. The presence of fiber in the concrete matrix helps mitigate against unintentional impact loads during segment handling and tunnel construction operations."

Over the past few years the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory's staff designed, built, tested and proved the necessary hardware, software and methodology of tracer gas based surveying techniques applied in the field of mine ventilation. These methods are now used routinely in a variety of applications where traditional anemometric methods do not provide the required accuracies or cannot be effectively employed. Irregular or highly turbulent flows, leakages, geometrically complicated or highly obstructed airways are just a few examples where traditional anemometry can produce unacceptable errors in calculated ventilation parameters. Tracer gas based ventilation techniques have been used in many problematic situations where the standard ventilation methods are inadequate. One such problem, faced by many mine operators, is the emergency imposed by the ever present threat of a mine fire. An understanding of the propagation of smoke contaminants and the demonstrated integrity of appointed escape routes can save lives and property during a fire. That knowledge can be gained quickly and inexpensively by the application of tracer gas smoke simulation methods. The concept of controlled air recirculation has recently gained considerable attention in the mining industry. While mathematical models can be used to predict performance, the ultimate proof of a ventilation system's performance can best be provided by a tracer gas based simulation of contaminant levels. Fan performance tests and assessment of auxiliary ventilation systems are highly dependent on accurate definition of airflows; precise data can be easily obtained by tracer gas based volumetric surveys. This is a world of change and has been from the beginning. There are constant efforts on the part of natural forces to wear down the high spots and fill in the low spots. Wind and water over eons of time tunnel through obstacles and build windways and waterways to make movement of air and water easier and more efficient. It is a natural, never ending, ever changing continuing effort. Man in his struggle to survive, and to progress, has had to adapt the terrain of the earth to fit his needs the best he could. First, he used natural caves to protect him from the elements; then he learned how to build earth and rock-moving tools from antlers, bone, rocks, and sticks and adapted his cave to increase his security and provide better protection from heat and cold and from his predatory enemies. As his numbers increased, so did the necessity of further adapting his environment to accommodate his needs. Water was usually not available when and where needed, especially in the desert areas where civilization developed, and long tunnels were drilled to intercept ground waters and lead them to underground caves carved out of soft limestone. Most of the tunnels of early man were to bring water from where it was to where man needed it. Then, as now, as man increased his chances for physical survival, he turned to the quality of life -- and this reflected in the concern for life after death. This lead to the elaborate shafts and tunnels for the protection and prservation of the more affluent noblemen and pharaohs of the early Egyptian civilization. Man used the underground for the stable temperature and for protection and safety.

Following the completion of the paper presented in February, 1972, data were received from many other mines and some original respondents submitted more complete questionnaires. The computer program was changed to permit the results to reflect more clearly all the data reported by the mines. The original paper was revised to reflect the new information. There were significant changes in some numerical values, particularly where the size of the sample changed appreciably. Some limited samples considered originally in arriving at conclusions were not relied on in this revision. The revised tables and text are of the same design and format as the original paper.

What happens when the skull and crossbones goes on a product? In the case of cancer warnings, the consequences can be severe. If the label contains the term "lung carcinogen", you might expect to compensate a lot of smokers, meet a lot of expensive lawyers, be counseled by equally expensive consultants and pay sharply elevated insurance premiums, if you are able to obtain coverage at all. At the extreme, you may face plant shutdowns, job losses or even Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Regardless of how you fare, you are likely to learn some very disconcerting things about the risk evaluation and regulatory system which required you to label in the first place. If a particular material or product does pose a health risk, you are obliged both legally and morally to warn those potentially exposed. Once that warning appears on the label, however, the consequences are often beyond your control. You and your embattled product become part of a legal/regulatory system which has a life of its own. Therefore, the issue of health labeling is not so much whether one warns but rather whether the warning itself is justified and the reasonableness of what happens afterwards. It is this matter of justification and reasonableness, particularly of cancer warnings, which this paper addresses. Until, as they say, your ox has been gored, we tend to believe that risk is determined by the best available technology and expertise We expect that risk evaluators appreciate the ramifications of their work and place things in proper perspective; that risk has been appropriately demonstrated before it is publicized and regulated; that the time-honored concept of prudence, to err on the side of safety, has not been excessively stretched. Dump leaching and ,in-situ solution mining have received considerable attention during the past few years due to their apparent economic viability and minimal environmental impact. Solution mining actually dates back to the 17th century when leaching of copper ore was first reported. However-, modern day leaching didn't begin on a wide scale until the mid-1900's. In-situ mining for copper, nickel, salts, and oil shale is currently looking more attractive as the technology advances. Presently, about 15 percent of the copper production in the United States is from leaching operations at approximately 14 active sites, the largest of which are the waste dumps near the Bingham Copper Mine, Utah. To establish a common background, the discussion is centered around state-of-the-art conditions. For dump leaching, complications inherent to the physical conditions and chemical reactions such as channeling, porosity and permeability, sorption, air flow, rock alteration and pH control are discussed. Emphasis is made on those conditions which render solution recovery rates and solution mineral concentrations unpredictable. By illustrating typical and actual field conditions, the generally accepted flow theories for both dump leaching and in-situ solution mining, including rubblization, are presented. For in-situ mining, hydrogeologic techniques such as geophysical well logging, aquifer testing and digital computer modeling are also discussed. The importance of artificial fracturing and well stimulating to solution injection and recovery is made with regard to project development. In 1963, a major expansion program at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon mine converted rail operation in the upper portion of the pit to truck haulage. Since that time truck-haulage capacity has increased to about 272 000 Mg (300,000 tons) per day. The majority of this production is waste material which is deposited in monolithic dumps located on the eastern slopes of the Oquirrh Mountains. The largest of these dumps, referred to as Copper Notch and Keystone, measures approximately 1830 m (6000 ft) in length, from 180 to 300 m (600 to 1000 ft) in height, and contains some 430 Tg (470 mil lion tons) of waste. The height, structure, rapid rate of growth, and anticipated leaching suggested the possibility of dump failure. In order to evaluate this possibility, an outside consulting firm was retained in 1966 to investigate the stability of the growing dumps. Their investigation indicated that, other than superficial movement, the waste dumps would be stable under static loading, and that soil distribution was not continuous enough to sustain massive foundation failure. Since this investigation, however, several failure processes have been observed. Crest settlement occurs frequently in response to compaction and over-steepening in the upper portion of the dump surface. Over-steepening results from accumulation of fines near the crest caused by natural segregation. Normally, coarse material, near the base of the dump, exhibits an angle of repose near 0.65 rad (37"). The fine material, however, stands as steep as 0.75 rad (40"). Periodic equilibrium adjustments cause stepwise settlement (Figure 1) of the dump surface and occasional sloughing of the protective berm. Routine surface preparation by dozers and graders and frequent inspections by supervisory personnel have proven adequate in preventing problems associated with this form of crest instability.

Modeling a mine ventilation system is a formidable mathematical problem requiring the solution of twice as many equations as there are airways with half of these being quadratic equations. The addition of a mine fire to the problem adds many more complexities. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Michigan Technological University attacked this problem in stages. During the 1970's and 80's, a series of computer simulation programs were developed which offered progressively increasing levels of modeling capability and accuracy. The current version of this software, MFIRE 2.0, was released in 1993. This programs provides for full dynamic state mass flow-based modeling of a mine ventilation system, and includes natural ventilation, mechanical ventilation, air reversals and recirculation, methane and fire contaminant spread, and moisture condensation and evaporation in the mass flow and heat exchange calculations. This program is a useful tool for routine ventilation planning and can significantly improve mine safety by enabling detailed quantitative analysis for mine emergency preplanning. This paper reviews the evolution of the MFIRE program from its infancy as a simple digital network simulator replacing analog computers to the present version.

The trend toward development of large low grade ore bodies has accelerated in recent years. It has been estimated within the copper industry that "porphyry" type deposits will provide the bulk of copper production during the next 30 years. It is further estimated that in these deposits the average ore grade by the year 2000 will be 0.25% copper (1). Many of the new porphyry copper discoveries are of such extremely low grade that they are particularly sensitive to small fluctuations in cost variables and copper prices. Because haulage constitutes a major item of surface mining expense, the capability to transport large tonnages of material at increasingly lower unit costs is vital to the profitable operation of many of these mines. High capacity conveyor belts appear to have considerable promise in this area. The heaviest use of high tonnage conveyors has been in the brown coal industry in Germany. In the past 20 years several such installations have proven successful. In addition to the German installations, several other successful systems have been put into operation. Some examples are: The Oroville Dam project in the United States; the tar sand operation in Northwest Canada; the pre-mine stripping and mining of the Twin Buttes Mine in the United States; the Kursk Magnetite 'dine in the U.S.S.R.; and the Nchanga Copper Mine in Zambia. Most of the systems mentioned are handling alluvial material consisting mainly of fines. The noteworthy point regarding these installations is their high continuous capacity. One of the largest lignite mines in the world is at Fortuna, Germany, where over 15,700 tons (15,250mt) per hour of overburden is transported on an 87 inch (221cm) wide belt running, at over 1000 feet (305m) per minute.(2). Another example is a 20,000 ton (18,150mt) per hour system for loading iron ore into barges on the Great Lakes (3).

Two recent antitrust cases, coming from widely separated areas, different industries and involving wholly different facts were decided by the Supreme Court on June 7, 1965. The decisions in these two cases may well prove to be the most important and far-reaching decisions in the field of labor law that have been handed down in the last 24 years. These cases, although quite dissimilar factually, had one common element. In both, the gravamen of the antitrust violation was bottomed on the terms of labor agreements negotiated by a multiemployer group. These cases are usually referred to as Pennington1 and Jewel Teat. Since a number.-of references will be made to the antitrust laws, it may be well to state briefly the applicable portions. Section I of the Sherman Antitrust Act makes "every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations, is declared to be illegal...". Section 2 imposes criminal sanctions against "Every person who shall monopolize, or attempt to monopolize, or combine or conspire with any other person or persons, to monopolize any part of the trade or commerce among the several states...". Under Section 4 of the Clayton Act a person who sustains damages as a result of a violation of the antitrust laws is entitled to recover treble damages plus costs.
