The drive selected for any piece of machinery must adequately satisfy the application requirements both during the starting interval and at running conditions, All loading possibilities of the drive must be known and allowances made for any adverse limiting conditions such as extreme cold, or perhaps an intermittent excessive loading situation etc. In general, the drive must be selected to provide the required operating characteristics with maximum reliability and at minimum cost. Simplicity of overall design is always an advantage and care must be exercised to insure that systems incorporating unnecessary complicated parts are not indiscriminantly provided. Important non-technical considerations such as equipment avail-ability (on an overseas project) as well as standardization details also play a role in the drive selection process. Additionally, an assessment of the potential capabilities of the personnel that will have to maintain the equipment can have some influence on the final choice. Several types of prime movers are available but this article will restrict itself to the use of induction motors operating from an available alternating current power source. Chelating resins can be used to recover important metals from different sources, and it is important to understand which resin is most suitable for each metal [1]. This review  benefits the mining industry because chelating resins can be used to recover metals from low-grade ores and mining tailings, increasing the industrial process efficiency [2–4]. The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95.9.5.5 mt (105.770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/ml (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper. 1.10 a lead and 11.06% zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1% Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89% copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) ,old. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6.Mmt (1.76 million it). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

A continuous on-line particle size analysis system for solid/liquid suspensions is described. The basic sensor utilizes a centrifugal principle to separate particles according to size, the resultant separation being measured by means of beta-ray attenuation. Results obtained when analyzing a variety of materials at sizes from 65 mesh (210 microns) to 20 microns are discussed in de- tail. Accuracies better than 2% are demonstrated. The effects of particle specific gravity, and mixtures of materials of diverse specific gravities, are discussed from a practical and theoretical viewpoint. It is demonstrated that particle specific gravity has a minimal effect on the size reading obtained. This renders the instrument suitable for handling materials where the ratio of light to heavy component may change. The design of the first commercial installation of this instrument is described in detail. This installation will be capable of analyzing three streams in sequence, measurement at three particle sizes being effected on each stream.

Boliden Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, annually treats some 11-12 million tons of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. Its first flotation plant was established in the early thirties for the complex Boliden ore. Since then, the number of mines and plants has gradually increased. Considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low-grade ores. The development of concentration has mainly been directed toward the arts of grinding and flotation. During the forties and fifties, open-stage fine crushing followed by two-stage grinding in rod and ball mills with cyclone classification was successfully introduced and used throughout the plants. The increasing cost of grinding media led to studies of an autogenous grinding technique as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, with a. number of ores tested for pebble grinding. In 1956 a new pilot plant was built, with equipment installed for the continuous testing of pebble grinding and, later, for primary autogenous grinding of run-of-mine ore. The intensive test work showed that pebble grinding was feasible in almost all of the plants. At this early stage of testing, however, the merits of autogenous grinding could not be fully evaluated. As a. consequence the rod mill/ball mill grinding systems were converted to rod mill/pebble mill systems whereever possible. The lack of metrics to assess clamshell formation dredgeability limits the ability of engineers to predict the dredgeability of compact material and increases the risks associated with clamshell selection. Research is needed to develop metrics for predicting clamshell dredgeability. The objective of this paper is to evaluate possible metrics to predict the dredgeability of compact aggregates by hydraulically actuated clamshell dredges. Data on cylinder pressures and displacements, motor current, bucket tilt and cycle time (CT) were collected from a dredge. Work done and motor energy, potential metrics, were computed and their suitability in predicting dredgeability evaluated. Data analysis shows that; there is no correlation between tilt angle and work done or motor energy; a low correlation between CT and work done, and a strong correlation between CT and motor energy. Work done is a better measure of formation dredgeability, than motor energy, as it shows lower variability. However, in difficult digging conditions, work done alone does not accurately predict dredgeability. This work shows that, it is feasible to use cylinder pressures and motor signals data to predict dredgeability.

The hydrothermal agglomerating process described (U.S. Pat. 3,235,371, (1966)) is different from the conventional high temperature processes. Green pellets or briquettes made with mixtures of moist iron ore concentrates and burned or hydrated lime fines are hardened in an autoclave at 198°C and under steam pressure for 1/2 to 5 hours, with or without previous drying. Under the neutral conditions, oxidation of magnetite does not occur as in the conventional processes. The resulting agglomerates are hard and resistant to abrasion and weathering, and they do not disintegrate in the Linder test. The equipment required for the process is not complicated, and favorable operating costs are projected because of the low temperature and efficient heat recuperation. A low capital investment makes the process attractive even when the annual pellet production is below a million tons.

The first recorded discovery of diamonds in Australia was in 1851 from New South Wales. Subsequent prospecting has shown alluvial occurrences of diamond to be relatively widespread through much of the Tasman Fold Belts of Eastern Australia and production to date is estimated to be some 500 000 carats from a number of 'small alluvial fields. Despite extensive exploration though, no primary rock source carrying significant diamond contents has ever been confirmed in Eastern Australia. Conversely, diamond exploration of the older Western and Central Cratons of Australia over the past 30 years has discovered 12 fields containing 360 kimberlites, lamproites and lamprophyric volcanic pipes, dykes and other intrusives, of which 180 have been confirmed to be diamondiferous. Only one pipe however, the 1200 Ma high grade Argyle lamproite and associated near-by alluvials, has proved to be economically exploitable with current annual production of 40 million carats valued at approximately US$400 million. Production from the open-pit will be sustainable until at least 2003. This paper briefly summarizes the history of diamond discovery in Australia, principal diamondiferous provinces and deposits, current exploration activities and the potential for future discoveries.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project (HRBT), initiated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will add two new 1.5-mile TBM bored tunnels to the two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands, part of the connection between Norfolk and Hampton under the Hampton Roads Harbor in Virginia, USA. The new bored tunnels will be built by Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP), a joint venture of Dragados USA, Vinci Construction, Flatiron Constructors and Dodin Campenon Bernard. This paper covers technical discussions that led HRCP to select a Variable Density TBM to address the challenges of this tunnel project, including but not limited to (i) the diameter of the bore: a 46 feet (14.04 m) diameter machine that constitutes the second-largest TBM ever used in the United States; (ii) shallow ground-cover under the water table; (iii) challenging and varying geology along the alignment, with mixed-face conditions and different types of ground modification zones; and (iv) the high TBM operating pressures required—all these and other challenges in a sensitive marine environment.

The statistical information and cost data used in this report has been made available by NICKDATA INC. Since 1982, NICKDATA INC. of Toronto, Canada, has produced an annual comprehensive nickel industry cost study. Up to date information on 22 mines, 21 smelters, and 16 nickel refineries representing 30 nickel production operations in 17 countries are included in the computerized cost analysis. The report is compiled from information obtained through regular annual visits to major nickel operations and continuous monitoring of information on all nickel producers. The 1984 report which was completed this summer, reveals drastic changes in the nickel industry cost structures.

The United States continues to be the largest producer and consumer of copper in the world. Table 1 on the following page shows several production statistics for 1974, the most recent year which the non-communist world copper industry might consider a good year, and for 1976 and 1977. In 1974 an estimated 24 percent of the non-communist world's newly mined copper was mined in the United States, and. 87 to 89 percent of that was from the western porphyry coppers. In 1976 U. S. new mine production was down to 22 percent of the non-communist world's newly mined copper, and the percentage of U. S. new mine production supplied by the porphyry coppers had risen to 89 to 91 percent. In 1977 the statistics remained the same as in 1976. U. S. porphyry copper production represented about 65 percent of U. S. refined copper consumption in 1974, rose to 75 percent in 1976, and dropped back to 61 percent in 1977 as imports of foreign copper into the United States began to swell.

Silver-gold ratios were studied at the Tayoltita epithermal vein deposit using channel sample, channel sample line, stope, ore body and vein sample populations. The ratios are highly variable among individual channel samples (25:1 to greater than 500:1) with both high and low values randomly distributed within ore bodies and veins. Whole vein ratios for the fourteen most important ore producing structures range from 44:1 to 105:1, and show zonal distribution relative to two small granitic stocks, low values closest to the intrusives. The zoned nature of the deposit suggests that the stocks, apophyses of an underlying batholith of Late Eocene age, were the heat engines which powered the hydrothermal system responsible for ore deposition.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone mine is one of the deepest block cave mines in the world and is in mountainous terrain in West Papua, Indonesia. The mineralization is hosted in a skarn deposit in a structural setting that is complex at the footprint, mine and regional scale. Large seismic events and significant episodes of rapid rock mass deformation are potentially critical geotechnical risks during this ramp-up stage of mining. Understanding the interaction between stress, strain, rock mass strength and geological structures is essential to minimize the hazard and engineer control measures to help ensure the safety of the employees while achieving production targets. This paper discusses how the seismicity and excavation damage have been shaped by the interactions between the mine and geological features, and how this affects strategic mining decisions. Additionally, the paper presents a summary of the mitigation measures used for mining the DMLZ in the safest and most productive way. These include improvements to geotechnical characterization of rock mass and structure, dynamic ground support designs, production scheduling for desirable cave propagation and a seismic monitoring system with re-entry protocols.

The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota will house four large detector tanks located in deep underground caverns. Construction of the supporting infrastructure required for this project is no complete including installation of a waste rock conveyance system and drill and blast excavation of several supporting drifts and chambers. This paper will discuss the design and construction of these pre-excavation and early works elements, and the overall project schedule as it closes in on commencement of cavern excavation activities.

Most coal being used in the United States has been subjected to one or' more processes of coal preparation. The physical and chemical characteristics of a coal have a marked influence on the ultimate uses that coal may have. The selection of the proper preparation processes may similarly be important in producing the best practical coal product for any particular use. The physical composition and distribution of physical constituents in the coal will partially determine the efficiency of the preparation process chosen and conversely distribution and concentration of coal macerals will, to a degree, be controlled by the preparation process. A number of preparation processes have been evaluated to determine this interrelation. If a coal having' certain specifications is desired, these evaluations trill assist in providing information needed for the production of this coal.

Two hundred years ago next April, our forebears embarked upon the difficult path to national independence. They succeeded, and shook off the yoke of foreign domination. In the ensuing two centuries, the country was mobilized several times to protect that political and economic independence from foreign domination. These efforts were also successful. Thus, as we stand here on the threshold of our third century of political independence, we can thank previous generations and congratulate ourselves for establishing and maintaining the world's oldest republic. Now -- once again -- the United States faces the challenge of foreign intervention into our economy. This time the battleground is resource avail- ability. America has been blessed with enormous resources. Whether we speak of minerals or timber or water or "amber waves of grain," this nation has benefitted from a resource base that is the envy of the world. This asset, coupled with a political system that permitted us to develop it, has been the physical backbone of our independence. Without the economic independence that this resource base has given us, the political independence we fought for would have been tenuous, at best.

Grinding with steel media adversely affects the flotation response of galena. Electrochemical measurements, flotation tests, and AES, XPS, and STEM examinations were employed to identify interactions between galena and mild steel. Iron oxide, hydroxide, or sulfate species that formed on the galena surface upon contact with mild steel decreased its floatability, with the time of contact and aeration condition affecting the severity of the flotation depression.. Parallel tests performed with an active metal, magnesium, indicated that floatability was also affected by the presence of a surface coating involving lead species.

In a flotation froth (and foam), air bubbles become larger due to coalescence, causing less hydrophobic particles to drop off. A bubble-coarsening model has been developed by calculating the changes in Plateau border area as a function of the initial bubble size at the base of a foam, liquid fraction, and foam height and then relating the predicted Plateau border area to the critical rupture thickness of lamellae film. The model predicts that bubble coarsens with increasing froth height, decreasing frother dosage, and decreasing aeration rate. The model predictions are in good agreement with actual bubble size measurements.

Forecasting demand is an art as well as a science, and much personal judgment is required. National forecasts made for sand and gravel, crushed stone, and/or aggregate may be misleading or unhelpful locally. This is because of significant variation in demand within different geographic and/or political areas in the United States, and/or the use of an inadequate data base and forecasting methodology. The best forecasts may be made for local or regional market areas, irrespective of geographic or political boundaries, provided a proper data base is available. The Bureau of Mines compiles detailed statistics on commodities sold or used in the construction industries and, therefore, is in an advantageous position to make national aggregate demand forecasts.
