Locus Mining is working side-by-side with a prestigious iron ore company to evaluate the addition of Locus ESG-friendly green flotation reagents with the primary goal of improving recovery and grade. In this paper, we will focus on the cationic reverse flotation application. The most “established industry” reagents for cationic reverse flotation are amine as the collector, starch as the depressant, and in some cases frothers are also used (among them MIBC, pine oil, others). Here, we evaluate the synergies of different classes of eco-friendly biosurfactants and industry-standard reagents during the cationic reverse flotation method. Exploratory research was done first with an analog sample under different pHs, eight different biosurfactants with starch and no-starch, and a customized DOE was used to perform 145 microflotation tests. The results show Separation Efficiency from 20% (baseline) to 50% (biosurfactant), and Selectivity from 3.27 (baseline) to 5.67 (biosurfactant). Optimized result conditions were then applied to the iron ore samples received from our client to perform flotation tests on a Denver Lab cell. Similar results were obtained by improving Separation Efficiency and Selectivity, which corroborate with the previous work.

"The solubilities of rhodium (Rh) in a molten silver alloy in doré-smelting conditions for treating copper refinery slime at temperatures of 1,000 to 1,300 °C were measured using a high-temperature equilibration-quenching technique and direct phase analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The results obtained indicate that the solubility of rhodium in molten silver is very limited: only 0.04 to 0.26 weight percent at 1,000 and 1,300 °C, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of rhodium in molten silver were estimated from the solubility data. The compositions of the solid rhodium alloys in equilibrium with molten silver-rich doré metal were also measured in this study. The excess rhodium in the doré alloy will precipitate during the refining as solid, greater than 99 weight percent Rh.IntroductionSilver refining is a core step of the processes of anode slime treatment and precious metals recovery in copper refineries (Hait, Jana and Sanyal, 2009; Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). It separates the oxidic materials, such as nickel oxide (NiO) and barium sulfate (BaSO4), from metallics after the de-coppering and de-selenation steps of the anode slime, and refines the silver bullion from the undesired elements present (Cooper, 1990; Hyvärinen, Lindroos and Yllö, 1989). Doré metal is a silver-rich alloy which after the smelting step will be refined electrolytically, and the remaining constituents of gold as well as the platinum group metals (PGM) will be subsequently recovered in their own processing stages.Because of low concentrations of PGMs in copper, they are typically soluble in the doré metal in anode slime treatment. This can be concluded from their binary phase diagram data with silver (Massalski et al., 2007). One exception is sometimes encountered in the anode slime smelting operations if the smelter feedstock is rich in rhodium, as may be the case if the raw materials contain secondary raw materials such as e-scrap. The solubility of rhodium in solid silver is less than 0.04 weight percent (Królas and Sternik, 1995), and its solubility in molten silver is highly uncertain. The only experimental information in the literature (Królas et al., 1993; Elliott, 1985) suggests that the silver-rhodium alloy system at 960 °C forms a eutectic, which locates less than 2 °C below the melting point of pure silver (Arblaster, 2015). Early observations (Rössler, 1900) propose that rhodium is insoluble in molten silver even if solid silver-rhodium solutions have been recently produced on a nanoscale (Kusada et al., 2010).The aim of this study is to measure experimentally the solubility of rhodium in molten silver at doré metal smelting and refining temperatures. The silver alloy used to mimic the doré alloy contained silver and about 1 weight percent of the alloying elements copper, gold, palladium, rhodium and tellurium. The experiments were carried out in metal-slag equilibria with nitrogen-oxygen mixtures as the atmosphere, employing an equilibration-quenching technique and using direct phase composition analysis by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) (Jak, Hayes and Lee, 1995)."

"The science of “optimal economic pit design” has been highly refined in the last decades. Even with the proliferation of optimizing and heuristic algorithms exploiting ever faster computers, the most common input is a single block model and a single set of cost assumptions, each of which is an estimate and prone to errors. An analysis of price assumptions produces a suite of nested economic shells, each with its own quantities of ore, waste, grade, and profit, but due to irregularities in the mineralized body, the growth of these shells can be erratic. To control the impact of the errors of the model and cost assumptions when choosing the pit shell for design, graphs of pit shells characteristics, such as stripping ratio, cost per unit of product and profit/ton, can be analyzed to consider points with higher stability, or robust pits. Selection of robust shells for a pit limit and for push backs can help to understand the impact to profit and risk. The robust shells also guide the preferred solution sets for final pit and cutoff optimization. INTRODUCTION “An open pit mining operation can be viewed as a process by which the open surface of a mine is continuously deformed. The planning of a mining program involves the design of the final shape of this open surface.” Optimum Design of Open-Pit Mines, Lerchs, H. and Grossmann, I. Transactions C.I.M. Volume LXVIII 1965. Traditionally an analysis of economic pit shells and sensitivity was performed by varying the input metal price. This was done with both floating cone algorithms as well as early versions of the Lerchs-Grossmann (L-G) algorithm. This gave an indication of the pit sensitivity to price but since other variables also change, some with metal price (perhaps steel and equipment), and some independently (fuel and tires) the understanding of these different pits was restricted. In addition, a run of the program could take hours, making a detailed analysis of small changes unwieldy. The L-G algorithm was programmed by a variety of people and sold as part of commercial mining packages, however it was first and most successfully commercialized by Jeff Whittle in 1984. When Whittle’s 3-D™ was expanded to 4-D the parameterization of the economic inputs was considered and the ability to run a suite of “pit shells” became automatic. The competing NPV Scheduler™ program sold by DataMine™ offers similar pit shell analysis capabilities."

Cortez Gold Mines, the United States' third largest primary producer of gold, commenced continuous operations on January 10, 1969. The decision to proceed to production was made in March of 1968 and construction of the mill and stripping operations for the pit began in April and July, respectively. Anomalous conditions on the slope of Mt. Tenabo along the Roberts Mountain thrust fault zone were discovered by the U.S.G.S. while conducting geochemical surveys in the old Cortez silver district. Following the discovery of gold an intensive program of drilling was organized. Drilling outlined an orebody with 3.5 million tons of ore averaging 0.28 ounces of gold per ton. It was on the basis of this reserve that a 1700 t. p.d. cyanide plant was designed. Needless to say, with such a limited ore reserve, economies in design and construction would have to be observed. Cortez Gold Mines is a joint venture with American Exploration & Mining Co., The Bunker Hill Company, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and Webb Resources, Inc. , as partners. Minproc Resources Inc. is developing a tailings retreatment project in Bolivia at the Colquiri zinc-tin-silver mine, in the Bolivian Andes. Mining at Colquiri has been continuous since 1940 and COMIBOL, the Bolivian state mining company, has owned and operated the underground mine since 1964. There are 10 million tonnes of tailings at Colquiri containing 0.51% Sn, 4.21% Zn and 50 g/t Ag. Minproc plans to mine and concentrate the tailings at 1.15 million tonnes per year to produce feed for pyrometallurgical upgrading. The tailings are moderately complex, with cassiterite grain size ranging from 200 to 5 pm. The marmatite (ZnFeS) in the tailings is relatively easily recovered, with zinc recovery of 80% to a 40%-45% Zn concentrate. The major problem with the zinc metallurgy is that the marmatite is complexed with iron, which results in iron contents of 14%-17% Fe in concentrate. This makes the product very difficult to sell because of the low Zn:Fe ratio. Most zinc smelters require a Zn:Fe ratio of 6:1 or 7:1, whereas this concentrate has a 3:1 ratio. Concentrate sale terms are therefore unfavorable, and the high cost of transportation from Bolivia to the smelters is an additional burden.

The North Auckland Line (NAL) in Northland, New Zealand, is being upgraded to pass Hi-Cube containers. The line includes many tunnels and bridges which need to be refurbished to improve structural clearances and line capacity. Tunnel 2 along the line, the Makarau Tunnel, has posed special challenges. Opened in 1898, the tunnel suffered multiple collapses during construction and has shown significant distortion during operation. The tunnel has been repaired many times since opening. Successfully enlarging this delicate and distressed structure has involved historical research, advanced analysis and design, and careful construction. The results provide lessons for dealing with brick lined tunnels and poor ground conditions

"The impact of mine closure is perceived through a veil of compliance to human laws and regulations rather than the laws and equilibrium of nature. This perception motivates present research. Understanding the causes and effects of mine closure defines levels of responsibility. This understanding evolves from mine closure's legacy. Mine closure is characterized in perpetuity by three aspects: Future liabilities; level of technologies for extraction and, usage of mineral resources. These aspects must be updated to a rationally appropriate level. This paper will address the following questions: Will the minerals remaining in the process of mine closure ever be recovered? Will the mine closure inhibit the availability of minerals for the next generation? How many mines are designed to perform a successful mine closure? Do we close the mines or do we close nature? Is it responsible to continue mine closures as we do them today? Is mine closure a complement of mine operations or a contradiction of mining? Do we need to perform mine closures, yet? This paper reviews mine closure practices and principles with the level of responsibility to nature and for the next generation.PREFACE The planet has irreversible issues to deal with regarding the depletion of mineral resources and contamination occurring from human activities. The population increased exponentially to more than seven billion, this high population with its lifestyles, demands a higher supply of minerals. In spite of these conditions, mining is a vital industry to keep ""civilization"" in society. This is evidenced by what we see around us, in that everything ""made"" in society is directly or indirectly due to mining. Hence, mining cannot be avoided or ignored. Society misunderstands the importance of mining in relation to other activities. At this time, mining is fragmented and economically oriented to supply cheap minerals to a market with peculiar characteristics regarding products that could be designed for recycling and stimulate nature’s equilibrium. These issues add important “variable factors” to the equation, when they are considered as parameters for the next generation. It also raises many questions regarding principles and attitudes about morals and ethics exercised in all anthropogenic activities. The industry's practices have many flourishing paradigms which are subject to a variety of criticisms and observations. Some of these observations will be described in this paper. It is important to clarify in advance a ""normal disclaimer"" about the ""apparent contradiction"" that could take place in the writer's comprehension when we abruptly ""jump to conclusions"". We must remember that we are profiling the future in an arena that demands a better understanding of solutions to problems created by actual mining."

High pressure grinding mills have been successfully introduced in the industry. They offer the possibilities for capacity increase of existing plants and reduction of operating costs. Further metallurgical advantages in gold and copper are possible. The plants in operation are running in different applications and modes of operation. They can be installed in a combination with SAG and ball mills or in a stand-alone mode. In combination with other grinding mills, it has to be investigated how the HPGR can be installed to reach the full efficiency. This paper details Keeler/ Dorr-Oliver's experience with the application of fluid bed combustion technology to the burning of coal-mining waste. The designs of two stage fluid bed combustors/dryers are demonstrated as useful in the drying of coal, slag and coke, using coal and coal refuse (gob) as fuel. Anthracite mining refuse (culm) is more than abundant in Northeastern Pennsylvania. After demonstration at Shamokin, Pennsylvania, a full commercial-sized fluid bed boiler using culm is used for district heating in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Limited research work has shown the utility of using fine coal as filter aid in sludge in¬cineration. With the rising avenues of the suitability of coal as auxiliary fuel in fluid bed sludge incineration, an expansion of these concepts combines the use of coal or coal refuse as filter aid and auxiliary fuel. Improvements in fine (28x0) and ultrafine (200x0) coal cleaning is an acknowledged goal with potential benefits in both steam and metallurgical coal markets. This work focuses on adaptation to fine coal flotation of FLOTE, a computer simulation model of the froth flotation process originally developed in the hard minerals field. FLOTE describes the flotation of solids based on particle surface activity, composition, and size. The quasi steady state model was applied to predict flotation performance at an Eastern Kentucky, full scale metallurgical coal preparation plant. Parameter estimation and model testing used detailed flotation test data from a five stage rougher flotation bank. Overall grade/recovery predictions compared well with known plant performance under variation of principally feed grade, plant throughput and reagent addition; however, grade/ recovery predictions for each cell weaken under overloading conditions. Analysis of grade/recovery over a range of sizes is presented. Suggested model improvements and extensions are discussed.

Isotope analyses distinguish biogenic sulfur ores from non-biogenic ores, but do not distinguish bioepigenetic from biosyngenetic ores. Sulfur deposits of salt dome caprocks and of bedded Permian evaporites of west Texas, however, are clearly bioepigenetic. Anhydrite, introduced by salt diapirs into geologically younger sediments, is converted biogenically to sulfur and calcite in the presence of petroleum; for example, in Challenger Knoll, a salt dome at a water depth of 3600 m in the Gulf of Mexico. It is believed that considerable economic benefit would arise if run of mine (ROM) coal from the underground mines in the Winifrede seam could he enriched before shipment to the preparation plant by partial removal of the shale. Shale could comprise up to 50% of the ROM product. Complete mine-mouth separation is not necessary, but any process must be dry and have high Btu recovery. We have conducted a preliminary analysis of coal/shale mixtures from the Winifrede seam and we find that it is quite possible that a 50-50 ROM mixture of coal and shale could be converted to a 60-40 coal-shale mixture by inspection of individual lumps coming from the mine. The device would consist of a feeder/siever section to deliver the ROM coal > 5 cm (2 in) to an inspection station via a conveyor belt. This inspection station decides if a piece is coal or shale, and if it is shale, activates an air jet to blow shale off of the belt. We have evaluated a dielectric loss technique for the inspection device. The potential advantages of the dielectric loss method are high throughput, low capital cost, and no special handling or licenses would be required. Such a single lump inspection technique is made possible because of advances in high speed electronics and servo systems. This paper provides a summary of our analyses on the Winifrede coal sample, a description of a proposed apparatus to separate coal from shale, some of the experiments needed to demonstrate our ideas.

The dissolubility of a natural sphalerite (ZnS) in the entire pH range was theoretically calculated, and its practical dissolution in an aqueous solution at different pH values in an inert environment, together with its surface properties after dissolution, was fully investigated. The results of the investigation indicate that the total concentration of Zn (CZnT) decreases significantly with the increase of pH value, while the pH value is set below 8; however, it reverses when the pH value reaches 8. Such a tendency is similar to that of the theoretical calculations, although the experimental CZnT were much higher than those of the theoretical calculations. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the sphalerite surface after its dissolution under alkaline solution shows that a polysulfide (Sn 2-) surface layer with a binding energy (BE) value of 162.96-163.25 eV is present on the surface, and the percentage of Sn 2- increases significantly with an increase in pH value; the undissolved and dissolved sphalerites under the acidic solution have a negligible difference in S2p peaks. The surface S/Zn ratio of all dissolved sphalerites shows a marked Zn enrichment and S deficiency. An atomic force microscope (AFM) view of the sphalerite surface, after its dissolution under the alkaline solution at a pH of 12, shows that the surface is significantly different in morphology from that of the undissolved one.

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. The Port of New York and New Jersey is one of the most heavily used transportation arteries in the world, handling nearly 40 per-cent of the North Atlantic shipping trade and directly providing nearly 230,000 jobs to the local economy. In 2004, $100 billion worth of consumer goods moved through the port. To accommodate future cargo volumes in the port, which are expected to double over the next decade and possibly quadruple in 40 years, deeper shipping channels are needed to provide access for a new generation of cargo mega-ships with drafts exceeding 13.7-m (45-ft) when loaded. Current channels within the harbor range in depths up to 13.7-m (45-ft), thus preventing carriers from using these larger ships, or requiring significant reductions in cargo to achieve lesser drafts to operate safely within the harbor. As part of the Harbor Deepening Project, the Anchor-age Channel would be deepened to 15.2 m (50 ft) below mean low water (MLW), for a length of 5,790 m (19,000 ft). The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) owns, operates and maintains two existing water siphons in the harbor. Due to their shallow depth, both existing siphons must be relocated before dredging of the Anchorage Channel can be completed. Tom Costanzo, manager of capital programs for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), says that ?While the re-location of the existing siphons under the Anchorage Channel is vital to the success of the deepening program, it is also a story of cooperation among key agencies at different levels of government resulting in improvements that will benefit the people of this region greatly.?

The focus of this study was on the evaluation of hydrologic and environmental behavior observed in GeoWaste and waste rock test piles. GeoWaste is a mixture of fast-filtered tailings and waste rock prepared as a tailings-dominated mixture. The two test piles included potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock and were operated for 26 months to evaluate whether GeoWaste can suppresses sulfide oxidation and production of metal-rich acid mine drainage relative to PAG waste rock. The test piles were constructed in the shape of truncated 5-m-tall pyramids with 25-m base sides and flat 5-m × 5-m top surfaces. Water content, temperature, electrical conductivity, and oxygen concentration were monitored in four layers and at five locations within each layer in both test piles. In addition, 5-m × 5-m lysimeters were installed at the base of each pile to collect leachate. Approximately 2660 mm of water was added to the surfaces of the test piles via precipitation and irrigation (irrigation ≈ 1050 mm applied at an approximately constant rate for 70 days). The measured saturation, oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity, and temperature in the GeoWaste and waste rock piles suggest more sulfide oxidation occurred in the waste rock pile compared to the GeoWaste pile. Observations from the pile experiments suggest that co-managing mine waste in the form of GeoWaste reduced acid generation compared to waste rock alone due to the lower permeability and unsaturated state of the GeoWaste pile that reduced downward migration of moisture and inhibited drainage.

For the mining industry in general and gold mining in particular the past few years have been difficult. Economic conditions coupled with growing regulatory restrictions have led to increasingly important reasons for managing assets wisely. From a public company perspective this makes sense because it ultimately provides for an increase in shareholder wealth and that's what we're in business to do. Regardless of whether a company is public or not, assets must be managed effectively to remain a player in today's competitive environment. So, as the CEO of a gold mining company, how do we manage our assets to ensure that we are satisfying our obligations to our customer --the Amax: Gold shareholder? Let me tell you. As I said earlier, the gold industry has been under siege. We have just completed our third year of average prices below $400 per ounce. When you add finding and/ or acquisition costs and development costs to operating costs, there isn't much of a profit margin left. What this environment provides, however, is opportunities for growth. In the gold business, you either grow or you die. Today, most North American gold producers have at most a 10 year mine life. We are all scrambling to add reserves so we don't become extinct. As prices remain low, opportunities for increasing diminishing reserves abound. This is the time for the opportunistic company to take advantages of market conditions and that's precisely what we, at Amax: Gold, have done!

During harsh weather conditions, the presence of fog, dust in the environment degrades the image’s quality, which affects the visibility of drivers of heavy earth-moving machinery in opencast mines. Due to low visibility, mining operations cannot be carried out as drivers are easily prone to accidents. This paper proposes a technique that includes developing a vision enhancement system called perceptive driving assistant system for increasing visibility of real-time video of the road in front of the vehicle for operators of heavy earth-moving machinery at opencast mines during harsh weather conditions to overcome the problem. The system consists of high-quality Internet Protocol cameras and thermal cameras for real-time image processing and other well-defined devices, which is quite capable of enhancing the visibility of the image, outlining edges of the road, and detecting obstacles present on the path of operators for smooth driving and reducing threat of accidents. A high-speed graphical processing unit has been used for quality-performance parallel computing, which is well suited for real-time operations to empower fast real-time operations. The calculated frame per second (fps) of image enhancement, object detection, and edge detection is 17.91, 15.91, and 25.09 fps, respectively. The actual frame rate is 26.07 fps, and after applying the algorithm, the final frame rate is 19.65 fps. The calculated accuracy of the object detection model is 81.23%. Field trials indicate that the developed system has performed adequately during foggy weather.

For many years tin mining in Bolivia has been very important to the economy of the country. In recent years the tin content of the ore reserves has been steadily declining. An improvement in concentration efficiency is highly desirable in order to increase productivity from the present-low-grade mine ores and to allow retreatment of the many millions of tons of tailings from past operations, some of which equal the present ores in tin content. A number of investigators have been or at present are working on various phases or approaches to the problem. Gravity concentration is used in Bolivia today as it has been in the past to recover tin minerals from the mine ores. An objective of the work reported in this paper was to examine the possibility of treating present low-grade ores and sink-float tailings products, at a relatively coarse grind, in order to produce a higher grade feed material to the present gravity concentration plants. The possibility of using heavy liquids in cyclones to treat large tonnages with a minimum of outlay presented itself and is of particular interest since appropriate heavy liquids are available and with physical properties which lend themselves to simple recovery methods. Tests were carried out using a closed circuit laboratory cyclone assembly. It was desirable to determine the value of using the SG50 concept and Tromp curves for analyzing the cyclone concentration test results. The effects of entrained water on the behavior of ore particles in the cyclone were examined.
