The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet a growing population’s longterm needs. It includes a bored tunnel between two deep shafts located in North Vancouver and Burnaby, BC, Canada. The support of excavation for the 16-meter-diameter (52.5 ft) TBM launch shaft consists of 83-meter-deep (272 ft) unreinforced concrete slurry walls. This paper discusses challenges encountered during construction of the launch shaft slurry walls, namely excavation methods and slurry loss, and mitigative solutions implemented to successfully complete the shaft with minimal impact to project schedule.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA's) rapid transit system, Metro, ultimately will comprise 162.5 km (101 miles) of line divided among 10 routes. As shown in Figure 1, about 24 km (15 miles) of the system will consist of mined rock tunnels distributed along the A, B, C and K Routes. The structural construction contracts for all of the A, C and K Route rock tunnels are complete and trains are running in about one-third of them. A contract for construction of rock tunnel section B-9, the southernmost third of the B Route, was awarded on June 27, 1980. The final design of Sections B-10 and B-lla, the remainder of the rock tunnel portions of the B Route and the Metro system, are well advanced and should be under con¬struction by 1982. Of Metro's 87 stations, 11 will have been constructed by mining in solid rock, a not inconsiderable achievement, since each structure must be over 183 m (600 feet) long, wide enough to accommodate two trains and one or two passenger platforms, and high enough to achieve a stable arching action without encumbering columns. With the passage of years, some original priorities have been reordered, and ways have been sought to streamline and simplify this most complex of Metro structures without grossly violating the architectural standards that make it unique. This paper will summarize that search, and describe the design and construction aspects of the resulting product, the dual chamber rock tunnel station.

A significant news item appearing in a coal mining journal in November 1969 stated simply that a Caterpillar D-333-CNA engine had received Bureau of Mines Schedule 31 approval. This item occurring at the time a new mining property in Martin County of East Kentucky was being prospected and prepared for mining, resulted in the manage-ment of Martin County Coal Corporation asking the question, "Why not use diesel equipment in our new operation?" Martin County Coal Corporation is part of the A. T. Massey Coal Company, Incorporated organization. The property being developed is on a 17,500 acre leasehold obtained from Pocahontas Land Corporation and lies in the Wolf Creek area of Martin County. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this undeveloped section of Kentucky to tap a huge reserve of steam coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all of the production from Martin County Coal Corporation mines which ultimately is projected to be 2,000,000 tons annually. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton are being deep mined now and it is in those mines that the diesel haulage equipment was introduced. This paper will endeavor to trace the steps loading to the introduction of the first diesel-powered Wagner Mining Equipment Company ScoopTram in a coal mine in America. It will further elaborate on the features which make this unit a very versatile and useful utility unit as well as the safety features which are incorporated in the machine. Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the cost approach category for real property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties. The author reasons that standards and regulations pertaining to real property valuation should be modified, and underlying principles should be expanded, so as not to inhibit appropriate application of these cost approach methods.

Results are presented for the first phase of an experimental program to study the feasibility of using acoustic velocity for predicting the state of stress in a rock mass. Compressional wave velocities were determined axially in cylindrical samples during uniaxial compression for several rock types conditioned in dry and water-saturated environments. Results indicate that in rocks containing compressible voids or cracks, substantial velocity change occurs with the application of stress in the lower (below 100 MPa) stress regime. The effect norm- ally is nonlinear, however, and diminishes to asymptotic values when cracks or voids become closed or with saturation. Empirical prediction equations were derived for each rock type by linear and nonlinear regression analyses, and correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the equations that best fit the stress- velocity data. The operational range for predicting stress using compressional-wave velocity appears to be within the range of vertical stress expected in most shallow to intermediate depth mining operations (less than 1,000 m). Based on the experimental results to date and theoretical considerations, it appears that the technology can be advanced to predict in situ stress based on acoustic P-wave velocity determinations in most mining situations.

Introduction ASARCO's Ray Operations include an open-pit copper mine in the Mineral Creek Mining District of Pinel County. The district is located in east central Arizona, 132 km (82 miles) southeast of Phoenix, AZ, and 126 km (78 miles) north of Tucson, AZ. The mine lies 8 km (5 miles) north of the Gila River in Mineral Creek Valley, between the Tortilla Mountains to the west and the Dripping Springs Range to the east. The rich copper deposits of the Mineral Creek mining district were first noted by a US Army Officer in 1847. The Ray Copper Company was the first major operation in the area. The company was named after the Ray mining claim, which was one of the earliest recorded claims. After decades of sporadic and unsuccessful mining ventures, the Ray Consolidated Mining Company was formed in 1910. The company introduced one of the first successful block caving operations in the world. In 1933, the Kennecott Copper Corporation acquired the Ray Consolidated Mining Company and continued operation of the mine under the same name until 1943, when the property was renamed the Ray Mines Division of Kennecott. Underground mining continued until 1955, when the mine was converted to an open pit operation. In November 1986, ASARCO Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division and related facilities from Kennecott. The purchase also included the Hayden concentrator and the Ray Smelter, located approximately 32 km (20 miles) from the Ray Mine. This paper summarizes the 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) in-pit crusher and overland-conveying system and the 24,200 tpd (30.000 stpd) copper SAG concentrator and tailings disposal system constructed at ASARCO's Ray Complex - Ray Operations. General description of facilities The Ray concentrator includes a sulfide SAG concentrator, a "relocatable" in-pit primary-crushing plant and overland-conveyor system, a concentrator tailings-disposal system and plant ancillary facilities, The major elements of the project include: • A relocatable Fuller-Traylor in-pit 1524-mm (60-in) x 2261-mm (89-in) primary gyratory crusher at the 442 m (1450 ft) mine elevation. The crushing plant has a nominal capacity of 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) of sulfide ore. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 1253-m (4110-ft) long overland belt conveyor, which runs from the in-pit crushing facility to a transfer station serving both the Ray Concentrator and the existing Hayden concentrator railroad load-out facility. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 152-m (500-ft) long stackerbelt conveyor, which delivers a nominal 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore from the transfer station to a 23,600 t (26,000 st) live-capacity coarse-ore stockpile serving the Ray Concentrator. • A nominal 27,200-tpd (30,000-stpd) concentrator, including semiautogenous grinding, flotation, copper concentrate filtration and associated plant ancillary facilities. • A tailings disposal system. Flotation tailings are pumped from the Ray Concentrator to a 122-m (400-ft) diam. thickener, located 4.8 km (3 miles) southeast of the Ray Concentrator site. The thickener overflow is pumped to two 76.2-m (250-ft.) diam. concrete process-water reservoirs. The thickener underflow, at 45% solids, is pumped to a new tailings disposal site located at Elder Gulch. • An HDPE-lined temporary-containment area to collect material from Ray Concentrator plant upsets and local storm-water run-off from a 100-year, 24-hour rain event. •A reclaim-water system from the Elder Gulch tailing pond area to the Ray Concentrator. • A 610-mm (24-in.) diam. x 31.9-km (19.2 mile) long fresh-water pipeline from the Hayden fresh-water-well field system to the Ray Concentrator. The overall process design criteria for the new Ray Concentrator is based on a nominal throughput of 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore at 90% plant availability. However, based on the maximum performance capacity of the installed grinding equipment, it may be possible to achieve a sustained operating level in excess of 36,300 tpd (40,000 stpd) when processing soft ores. We in Kennecott are well aware that Alaskans are interested in the progress of our project at Ruby Creek. We would very much like to be able to present you with a final report at this time and tell you about a new mine. I'm afraid, however, that it will be several years at best before such a report can be made. This, then, is an interim report to describe briefly some of our findings to date, and to acquaint you with some of the problems, both geologic and economic, which must 5e resolved favorably before we can talk about a mine. There are several things about this project which make it unusual and interesting to those of us who have been connected with it. Firstly, there is the fundamental importance to Alaska, in the present stage of its economic history, of any undertaking which offers promise of turning a natural resource into a competitive export product. I am sure all of us would get a lot more satisfaction out of having a part in bringing in a new mine in Alaska than we would out of adding another one to the long list in, say, Arizona.

"The kinetics of leaching of a saprolitic ore from Indonesia by citric acid solution under atmospheric pressure was investigated. An examination of the effects of leaching temperature, citric acid concentration, pulp density and ore particle size on the dissolution rate of nickel found that they all had significant influence on the rate. The highest nickel recovery (95.6 percent) was achieved under the leaching conditions of ore particle size of 212-355 microns, citric acid concentration of 1 M, leaching time of 15 days, pulp density of 20 weight/volume percent, leaching temperature of 40°C and shaker speed of 200 rpm. The shrinking core model was found to be appropriate for describing the leaching kinetics of this ore in citric acid solutions at atmospheric pressure. The experimental data were well interpreted by this model with rate of reaction controlled by diffusion through the solid product layer. Using the Arrhenius expression, the apparent activation energy for nickel dissolution was evaluated as 12.38 kJ/mol. Finally, on the basis of the shrinking core model, a proposed empirical kinetic model for the leaching of nickel from this Indonesian saprolitic ore was expressed as a mathematical model, which was verified as consistent with the observed experimental results.IntroductionIndonesia has some of the world’s largest nickel laterite reserves and was the largest producer of nickel – in the form of nickel lateritic ores – in the world in 2013 (Merchant Research and Consulting Ltd, 2014). However, only high-grade saprolites are processed in Indonesia using pyrometallurgical methods to produce ferronickel and nickel matte. Lower-grade saprolites and limonites are removed, becoming waste or overburden in mining site areas. Hydrometallurgical methods, involving either chemical leaching or bioleaching, are now seen as the most important technologies for treating nickel laterites in the future because of their advantage of not only extracting nickel and iron but also other valuable elements. In addition, hydrometallurgical methods consume less energy and have lower capital and operational costs. Although they are recognized to be more suited to limonites, some researchers have studied their use in the extraction of nickel and other metals from saprolites (Guo et al., 2009; Lu et al., 2013). Hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of metals, especially nickel, promise to be meaningful alternatives to pyrometallurgical processes to primarily treat low-grade saprolites for which pyrometallurgical processing is not favorable"

The key event was the adoption of The Asbestos Convention by the Inter- national Labour Organization (ILO) and its 150 member countries. The document, entitled "Safety in the Use of Asbestos", reaffirms the international consensus on the "controlled-use" approach to chrysotile asbestos regulation. The decision of the ILO has come at a critical point in time. It represents a major turning point and provides an important building block for the long term future of the asbestos industry.

Ore grade modeling of a placer gold deposit is considered a challenging problem even today. Typically, gold-bearing deposits show extremely erratic and unpredictable grade variation. This is principally because of isolated occurrences of gold metal within a few high-grade pockets. Because of sporadic fluctuation of high-gold-grade distribution, the overall spatial continuity of the deposit becomes poor. This type of variation is often described by a lognormal or highly skewed frequency distribution, and the spatial continuity of the deposit is characteristically represented by a variogram model that exhibits a high nugget component. Further complicating the matter is the sparse availability of drillholes to capture such erratic variation. Due to the prohibitive cost of drilling, gold grade and reserve estimations are typically carried out using insufficient exploratory data. Use of a traditional estimation technique on limited data often produces an unreliable ore grade model. Kriging and its nonlinear variation, lognormal kriging, are frequently used in gold deposit modeling (Rendu, 1979; Journel, 1980); however, kriging is flawed by the smoothing effect. Moreover, though kriging is known to be globally unbiased, it is not free from conditional bias. As a result, if a deposit is modeled using the traditional kriging technique, a high-grade zone can be predicted to be a low-grade zone and vice versa. Predicting high grade as low grade results in a missed opportunity to exploit profitable ore. On the other hand, prediction of low-grade ore as high-grade ore might result in financial loss for a mining operation. Thus, the use of kriging for ore grade mapping of a gold deposit may not be recommended. Estimation techniques (including kriging) can produce an estimate with minimum error in a minimum-error variance sense. However, no matter which estimation technique is used for grade modeling of a highly erratic deposit like gold, the error margin is bound to be high. Therefore, any grade prediction made for an unknown location is associated with high uncertainty. Since various mine-planning operations, including derivation of grade tonnage curve, pit design and economic analysis of the deposit, are based on estimated grade rather than true grade, a mining project evaluation that depends upon estimation will be subject to considerable risk. Thus, the successful design of a mining project not only depends upon accurate grade estimates, but also upon accurate assessment of uncertainty, for predictive grade is equally important. Although the kriging standard deviation is used as an indicator of uncertainty for prediction, it is flawed by characteristics related to a data-independence property. This study, therefore, investigates the stochastic simulation technique of conditional simulation for ore grade modeling of a placer gold deposit at Nome, Alaska. It is expected that the research will provide a better solution to ore-grade deposit modeling than the kriging technique because (1) conditional simulation preserves spatial continuity as well as reproduces the data histogram, thus avoiding the smoothing problem; and (2) generation of multiple realizations helps to accurately quantify the uncertainty about grade values in the deposit.

Blasting practices based on sound engineering principles are well established but the successful application of these practices requires accurate information about the overburden geology and close supervision of the drilling and blasting operations. Good design alone is not sufficient to insure good results, but the process may be difficult to control unless steps are taken to measure the variables and to provide management and the operators with the information they need to establish and maintain control. Satisfactory blasting can be defined as loosening and fragmenting the rock so that it can be handled by the excavating equipment, while at the same time, governmental regulations on air blast and ground vibrations are not violated. Optimum practices achieve these objectives at the lowest combined cost of the drilling and loading operations and the blasting materials. Total system optimization, that is, taking into consideration the effect of fragmentation on the cost of operating and maintaining excavating equipment as well as drilling and blasting costs, probably is not a reasonable goal at the present time.

An extensive research work was developed by Samarco Mineracao S/A to study the quality characteristics of blast furnace pellets produced with high content of MgO. Comparative blast furnace simulation tests were conducted both in Samarco and foreign laboratories. The objective was to evaluate the behavior of high MgO and normal Samarco pellets in the blast furnace operation. Additives such as dolomitic hydrated lime, dunite and magnesite were used for increasing pellet MgO content. The test results showed that pellets produced with high MgO content are similar in quality to normal Samarco Pellets.

Hang-ups are a challenging operational problem in block caving mines. They interrupt ore flow and imply hang-up removal activities, which take time, increase operational costs, and involve safety risks for workers. In block caving, the number of hangup events of mechanical arches that appear in the drawbell could be decreased if the drawbell geometry is adequately designed based on the expected rock fragmentation. Here, we compile and analyze hang-ups reported in several block caving mines to evaluate the impact of drawbell geometry, rock size, and vertical load on hang-up frequency at the mine scale. Results show that the ratios between drawbell length and d80 (dL/d80), between drawbell width and d80 (dW/d80), between drawbell volume and rock volume (VDB/VP), and vertical stress are critical parameters that define hang-up frequency. These findings confirm previous experimental studies, where a decrease in hang-up events is associated with an increase in these ratios. Additionally, these outcomes are used in a support vector machine algorithm to define categories of hang-up frequency. The results of this classification algorithm are presented in diagrams, which can be used to estimate the hang-up frequency in block caving projects.

The present study has investigated the leachability of cadmium sulfide minerals by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and the electrochemical reactions involved in the process. Using a cyclic voltammetric technic and carbon-paste-CdS electrodes, it was found that the bio-oxidation of semiconductor cadmium sulfide minerals consisted of a number of intermediate electrochemical reactions. The overall reaction was found to be controlled by solid state diffusion as suggested by the chrono-amperometric and chrono-potentiometric measurements. The activation energy of solid state diffusion was determined by the Sand's method to be AE=24.3 kJ. A generalized mechanism was proposed for the bacterial oxidation of cadmium sulfide by T. ferrooxidan and an explanation given for the importance of high redox potential of leach solution versus the decomposition potential of the sulfide mineral. Furthermore, the effects of n-type or p-type character of CdS substrates relative to their bioleachability was discussed.

The percentage depletion deduction on Federal Income Tax Returns under the provisions of the 1939 Internal Revenue Code and of Sections 611 to Section 615, inclusive, of the revenue act of 1954, have created innumerable administrative difficulties, and a new interpretation of "gross income from the property" in that the Courts have expanded the ideas of what constitutes "gross income from the property" to a degree unheard of and unthought of prior to the enactment of these two codes. Originally, under the Revenue Acts of 1917, 1918, and 1920 depletion was allowable, based upon mine valuations as of March 1, 1913; if the mine was owned prior to March 1, 1913; upon cost, as of the date of acquisition if purchased subsequent to March 1, 1913; and upon a "discovery" basis if the mine was discovered after March 1, 1913, The "jab" for mine valuations as of March 1, 1913 and for discovery valuations and depletion was not as bad as it has been made out to be. Thousands of valuations and estimates of reserves were made and agreed upon between taxpayers and Internal Revenue Service engineers and as the years went on the answers have been found to be "reasonable." However, human nature being what it is each case was a battle of wits - of a sort - and many resulted in severe differences of opinion and litigation. As tax rates increased the situation was not bettered. I could talk for several hours on this phase of depletion but it is all past now andwould not give any real service or better understanding of the matter.

Halfway through a 17,770-ft long stormwater tunnel, an 11-ft diameter TBM encountered a karst void below the Mississippi River in Missouri, resulting in significant inflow. It was decided that the TBM could not safely advance without external intervention. Low-mobility grout was pumped from the surface. A rescue shaft was constructed and a conventional tunnel with spiling support was mined back to the machine. The TBM was removed and a 14-ft diameter TBM equipped with probing drills was relaunched. Probing from the new TBM encountered one additional karst feature but the machine advanced after grouting and successfully completed the tunnel.

"The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted underground evaluations in an attempt to quantify respirable rock dust generation when using untreated rock dust and rock dust treated with an anticaking additive. Using personal dust monitors, these evaluations measured respirable rock dust levels arising from a flinger-type application of rock dust on rib and roof surfaces. Rock dust with a majority of the respirable component removed was also applied in NIOSH’s Bruceton Experimental Mine using a bantam duster. The respirable dust measurements obtained downwind from both of these tests are presented and discussed. This testing did not measure miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust under acceptable mining practices, but indicates the need for effective continuous administrative controls to be exercised when rock dusting to minimize the measured amount of rock dust in the sampling device IntroductionTwo recent regulations have modified operators’ rock dusting schedules in order to meet compliance standards. First, the 80 percent incombustible requirement in intake entries has increased both on-section and out by the- section rock dusting. Secondly, the recent change to the respirable dust regulation has increased the number of respirable dust samples taken per sampling cycle. Previously, when only five samples were needed bimonthly, rock dusting could be scheduled to not interfere with the respirable dust sampling schedule.The significant number of samples now required under new regulations, combined with the need to maintain 80 percent total incombustible content in active mining areas, require the schedules for respirable dust sampling and rock dusting to overlap. Although rock dust is considered a nuisance dust in relation to U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) sampling, these overlapping schedules raise concerns about the amount of rock dust that potentially is included in the sample. Additionally, the respirable dust maximum was lowered from 2.0 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 effective Aug. 1, 2016, increasing concern that rock dust contamination may be an issue (MSHA, 2016).
