Because of variation in rock type and site conditions, it is important to create site-specific prediction models for peak particle velocity (PPV) and understand instrumentation mounting locations to better interpret the readings provided following blasting operations. The Atlanta Airport is expanding the section of underground tunnels for its Plane Train people mover, and drill and blast operations were determined to be the suitable method of excavation for the project. Extensive work was done to begin creating prediction models and determining levels of concern based on readings from various types of instrumentation. This paper analyzes the effect of close quarters construction blast vibrations and observed frequency spectrum on existing structures with data from 22 different seismographs mounted in various locations and ground conditions.

"An air dense medium fluidized bed separator is an efficient dry process for the removal of undesirable gangue material from run-of-mine coal. Its cleaning performance depends on a variety of operating parameters that are interrelated in unknown, complex ways. A literature review showed that these parameters' effects had been experimentally investigated using a traditional one-variable-at-a-time approach, which is highly inefficient and sometimes misleading because many of the parameters often interact with each other to alter the overall equipment performance. Also, it is realized that the interrelationship among these parameters can have a significant effect on equipment performance. Therefore, to correctly evaluate the effects of individual parameters as well as their interactional effects on the separation performance of an air dense medium fluidized bed, we conducted a scientific study based on response surface methodology. Empirical models for two key response variables, namely, product ash and combustible recovery, were developed and subsequently used for identifying an appropriate operating region to achieve optimum separation performance. Furthermore, the optimum performances predicted from the empirical models were validated against experimental data. Preliminary results show a strong interaction among the operating parameters investigated in this test program.IntroductionFluidization is widely applied in industry for its various useful features. In the coal industry, it is used in the air dense medium fluidized bed (ADMFB) separator for the beneficiation of run-of-mine coal. In this separator, a medium is created by suspending fine magnetite particles in an upward air flow, and this pseudo-fluid is used as the beneficiation medium, with the lighter coal particles floating to the medium’s surface while heavier particles sink to the bottom. This separation technique had been receiving a significant amount of attention worldwide in recent times for its specific advantages of low operating cost and less restriction for small capacities (Luo and Chen, 2001; Sahu et al., 2009; Dwari and Hanumantha Rao, 2007; Van Houwelingen and de Jong, 2004), but it is still not a well-established industrial practice because of the availability of efficient wet processing technology. However, with a revival of interest in the dry beneficiation of coal, in general, and ADMFB, in particular, there is once again a concerted effort to improve the efficiency of the ADMFB process, and successive improvements have been made to make this process a competitive and viable option. The existing literature reveals that most of these research efforts had been essentially focused on the identification of a single parameter that has a key influence on separation performance, without taking notice of parameter interactional effect. For example, Luo et al. (2004) proposed a pressure drop number to distinguish separation performance without considering the bed height and gas velocity, which are intimately related to this proposed pressure drop number."

Coleman Quartz Inc. has a long history as the sole U.S. producer of lascas for the cultured quartz growing industry based on its unique deposits in Arkansas. Since 1989 the company has also been producing metallurgical grade silica for the ferrosilicon industry from a deposit of unusually pure Arkansas novaculite. This paper chronicles Coleman's trans-formation of an abandoned railroad ballast quarry into a generator of $1.5 million in annual sales to a nontraditional novaculite market. Potential additional applications for this high quality silica rock will also be mentioned.

Seismic events can be induced by mining due to unstable rock failures or slips along geologic structures leading to the sudden release of strain energy stored within the rock near underground openings. Depending on their intensity and proximity to the working area, seismic events may raise safety concerns, and thus the forecasting of the seismic potential in advance of mining can mitigate safety hazards. The integration of seismic data into geomechanical modeling can provide a tool for identifying areas with elevated potential for seismic activity. In previous works, a methodology was developed to forecast seismic potentials in a pseudo-2D geomechanical model. In this paper, seismic events, ranging in magnitude from about -1.0 ML to 3.7 ML, recorded in a deep longwall mine (> 450 m) in Virginia during mining of six adjacent panels, were evaluated to identify areas where larger magnitude events (> 1 ML) had occurred. A three-dimensional geomechanical model of the same area was constructed in the 3DEC software to calculate the state of energy in the system with the progress of mining along the entire length of each panel. The variation in the energy content of the model was monitored, and zones with potentially damaging slip-type events along bedding planes followed by compressive-type events in the sandstone roof are the mechanism for large seismic events in the studied mine. The locations of anomalous events corresponded to the regions where both compression-type SPI (C-SPI) and slip-type SPI (S-SPI) were elevated. The modeling results were compared with the recorded seismic events to evaluate the model performance in forecasting the seismic potentials. The model was able to forecast 100% of regions with elevated and moderate seismic potential and 89% of regions with low seismic potential. This shows the applicability of energy balance calculations for forecasting the approximate location and timing of destructive seismic events in advance of mining.

The dissolution behavior of copper and gold from their pure state and from Au/Cu alloys in cyanide solutions has been investigated using a rotating disc. Oxygen was used as an oxidant. The effect of the composition of the alloys, stirring speed of the disc, concentration of lixiviants and temperature on the overall dissolution kinetics has been studied. Gold/copper alloys of three compositions were used in this study. The atomic percent of gold in these alloys was 75, 50 and 25, respectively. The dissolution behavior of these three alloys was compared with that of pure gold and of copper under the same chemical conditions. In general, the dissolution of copper and gold from alloys is partially controlled by surface chemical reaction and largely by mass transfer.

Cemented tungsten carbides are a sintered powder - metallurgical product essential to modern industry. Because of their moderate unit price and our dependence upon foreign sources for the component raw materials, a growing recycling industry has developed in the United States. There are two basic approaches taken to recycling cemented carbides; those which leave constituting materials unaltered or direct-reuse and those which separate the constitutes back to the raw components. To separate the carbides back to their raw components usually requires expensive chemical processing and is thus confined to the lower value materials such as grinding sludges. The direct-reuse methods recycle cemented carbides back to an intermediate level, a powder capable of being recompacted and resintered into a functional end-product. An overview of the evolution of computerized mine planning and design has been given, emphasizing the need for a knowledge-based system for planning and design of underground coal mines. An outline for the development methodology and procedure has been provided. Problem structuring guidelines have been used to incorporate intelligence and integration to the design modules. A skeletal model for a mine planning and design expert system has been prescribed, and the development process has been documented in detail. A feasibility prototype has been developed to test the structure of the skeletal model and to ensure completeness of the design process. The feasibility prototype development and its contribution toward proto typing has been addressed in this paper. At present, prototype development is underway. The prototype is expected to be avail-able for testing and implementation in early 1991.

Beam theory is a proxy for the behavior of intact, deforming roof strata above underground openings. Strong, stiff, intact strata have the ability to store significant strain energy when underground openings have large spans, as is typical of longwall operations. When strata fail, they may release some or all of this strain energy. Released energy is partitioned between fracture, thermal, and seismic energy. The tensile failure surface in simply supported beams is predicted to be free of shear stress. This prediction and the kinematic inability of crack slip during fracture make significant dissipation of energy by friction unlikely. In this study, the failure energy partitioning of Nugget Sandstone specimens is examined. Tensile fractures in specimens were induced using three-point loading tests. Elastic waves emanating from fracture events were recorded using an array of accelerometers. Accelerometers were placed within two crack lengths of the fracture surface, and the acceleration records are similar to strong motion seismic records. Spectral analysis was performed and used to develop synthetic, well-behaved, acceleration signals. Synthetic velocity signals were used to estimate radiated seismic energy generated by fracture. These estimates of radiated seismic energy demonstrate a potential means to constrain the minimum seismic partition. Fracture testing was performed on additional samples to estimate the fracture toughness of the sandstone. Synthesis of this data demonstrate a potential means to constrain a maximum seismic partition. Bounding the seismic partition for this type of fracture event could aid the detection and evaluation of seismicity emanating from longwall operations. Having better information about the location and magnitude of mining-induced seismicity within longwall overburdens could lead to better understanding of extraction sequencing and rock behavior in general. These energy estimates also support the hypothesis that dissipation of thermal energy by friction is small in bending tensile failure.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the research of the past sixteen years on three distinct methods of probing into solid rock. The first method is to use radar of the appropriate frequency. The second method is to use sonar. The third method is of recent vintage and uses techniques of nonlinear sonar also known as parametric sonar. The first two concepts, that of radar and sonar, are common to most people. Very few have heard of nonlinear sonar. Each of the probing techniques were investigated in order to overcome deficiencies in the former technique. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. It should be emphasized that all of these techniques for probing (or seeing) into rock are used in mines, and generally speaking not from the surface. Only in very special cases, such as certain very dry parts of Egypt or Peru, or, for example, the surface of the moon, will these probing techniques work from the surface. The reason for the development of these probing techniques has been to alert miners to possible hazards ahead of mining. Such hazards may be (1) old (unknown) boreholes connected with high pressure water zones above, (2) fractures that might connect to the Gulf of Mexico above the mine, (3) water-filled fractures that threaten the safety of miners, or (4) the discovery of dry faults ahead that can disrupt the planning of future operations.

The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,175 t (3,500 st) of ore per day with an average gold grade of 12.6 g/t (0.4 opst). The mine has a large horizontal extent of 762 by 152 m (2,500 by 500 ft) and a vertical extent of 6 to 61 m (20 to 200 ft). Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, the deposits are divided into several mining zones. The geotechnical properties of mining zones are also different from one zone to another. A successful geotechnical collection system is very important for mining design and operation in the Leeville underground mine. Three methods are used to collect the geotechnical data in the Leeville underground mine: • Core logging. Most geotechnical data are collected by this method, which is based on exploratory drills and estimates parameters for rock quality designation (RQD), fracture frequency (FF), compressive strength and rock mass rate (RMR). • Site investigation. This method collects more detailed geotechnical data and geostructural data from work done in the underground drifts and stopes. Parameters of RQD, FF, compressive strength, RMR, rock tunneling quality index (Q) and geostructural data are estimated. • Data collected from drill holes made for the critical infrastructure facilities. This method provides the best detailed geotechnical information for areas in which the critical infrastructure located. A complete geotechnical database has been constructed using this geotechnical data collection system. The database can be used for the design of ground support, stopes and stope blasts, among other critical applications.

Tailings (flotation waste) that is formed during copper production may be considered in the class of valuable wastes due to the amount of copper it contains. Owing to the decreasing grade values in copper ores, utilization of wastes such as tailings that carry certain amounts of copper as secondary sources has become a necessity in both the economic and environmental sense. This study investigated the usage conditions of five different ammonia salts as leaching reactants for the purpose of selective extraction of copper from tailings. For this purpose, the effects of parameters such as leaching temperature and leaching time were examined at different concentrations of ammonium hydroxide, ammonium carbonate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, and ammonium persulfate. The copper extraction efficiency in the case of using the aforementioned salts by themselves were listed as (NH4)2CO3 (73%) > (NH4)2S2O8 (69%) > NH4OH (64%) > NH4Cl (42%) > NH4NO3 (40%). The highest copper extraction efficiency was obtained in the leaching process that was conducted with the solutions obtained by mixing ammonia salts in the best conditions. A tower-like magnetic system comprising eight permanent magnets was installed at the center of a flotation column to separate chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite minerals. A cyclonic flotation was installed within the underpart of the column to separate the pyrrhotite from the gangues. A three-product magnetic flotation column was fabricated to create a magnetic field and a cyclonic zone. The products were Cu concentrates, pyrrhotite concentrates and tailings. The theoretical magnetic field strengths and the magnetic forces were calculated. The results of the flotation experiments showed that the Cu grade increased from 14.20% without the magnetic field to 26.40% in the presence of the magnetic field and that the S grade in the pyrrhotite concentrates increased in the presence of cyclonic flotation. The separation efficiency of this magnetic flotation column was evident. Therefore, this three-product magnetic flotation column may have a potential application, due to its high separation efficiency.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently studied several redirected scrubber discharge configurations in its full-scale continuous miner gallery for both dust and gas control when using an exhaust face ventilation system. Dust and gas measurements around the continuous mining machine in the laboratory showed that the conventional scrubber discharge directed outby the face with a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust curtain setback appeared to be one of the better configurations for controlling both dust and gas. Redirecting all the air towards the face equally up both sides of the machine increased both the dust and gas concentrations around the machine. When all the air was redirected towards the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, gas accumulations tended to be reduced at the face at the expense of increased dust levels in the return and on the curtain side of the mining machine. A 6.1-m (20-ft) exhaust curtain setback without the scrubber operating resulted in the lowest dust levels around the continuous mining machine, but this configuration resulted in some of the highest levels of dust in the return and gas on the off-curtain side of the mining face. Two field studies showed some similarities to the laboratory findings, with elevated dust levels at the rear corners of the continuous miner when all the scrubber exhaust was redirected towards the face either up the off-tubing side or equally up both sides of the mining machine.

Problems of mine backfilling and fill material deposited underground, the characteristics and relationship between the deposited fill material and overlying ground, and the practical applications and limitations of hydraulic backfilling as ground support are discussed. A great variety of materials ranging from coal washery refuse to concentrator tailings is used as hydraulic fill. Some materials will solidify and cement; others will resemble quicksand, Hydraulic fill as ground support is more efficient in inclined mine openings than in horizontal mine openings, where it cannot be placed tightly to the back. This and other deficiencies of hydraulic backfilling led to the development of pneumatic stowing. Research work in hydraulic backfilling at the Pennsylvania State University is also discussed. This research work includes the investigation of segregation in the discharged fill slurry, the quantity of solids escaping in the drain liquid, the relationship of escaping solids to slurry concentration and discharge rate, and the compressibility of fine fill material.

Florida's electrical needs are served by 58 utilities of practically every type: six investor-owned, 34 municipal, 17 cooperative, and one federally-owned. They range in size from a small municipal system with a, 2 MW annual peak demand CD a large investor-owned utility serving about one-half of the state with an annual peak demand of 8,600 MW. (1),(2) These utilities are interconnected at several voltage levels with 230kV serving as the pre-dominant voltage for the bulk power transmission system. About 275 miles of 500kV circuits are found within two systems, but no tie-lines yet exist at this voltage. Due to Peninsular Florida's (that portion of the state east of the Apalachacola River) geographic location and shape, it cannot, at present, depend upon its interties with the remainder of the nation to completely support the sudden loss of the state's largest generator. Therefore, the utilities maintain a total amount of spinning reserve to cover for this single contingency outage at all times. Most of the state's electric utilities belong to the Florida Electric Power Coordinating Group (FCG) which, through its standing committees, coordinates the planning and operation of the member systems. Though a formal, centrally dispatched pool does not exist in the state, generating utilities which belong to the FCG's Operating Committee subscribe to an energy broker operation to maximize the savings that can accrue from economy interchange. Studies are underway, with participation from the staff of the Florida Public Service Commission, that are investigating both central planning and dispatch of the peninsula's electric utilities. Florida's electric load is mainly residential. During: 1976, 48.8% of all electrical energy use was by residential customers; 31.8%, commercial; 16.2%, industrial; and 3.2% for all other. By comparison, 32.7% of the United States' load was residential, followed by 40.5% industrial, 23.0% commercial, and 3.8% other.

The Lower Cretaceous salt deposits of the Gabon Basin and Congo Basin were said down on ton of an Burly Cretaceous Lato Jurassic, continental graben fill that represent!) the rifting phase of the Afro-American continent. The salt 13 characterized by high percentages of potash and magnesium salts and the scarcity of sulphates and carbonates. The salt probably originated from a brine that was already enriched in high-soluble salts before entering the Gabon Congo basins. Their low-solubility equivalents are found in the Cuanza Basin of Angola. Commercial mining of the potash salt is only possible in those onshore areas where it is essentially undisturbed, shallow and of the right chemical composition. These conditions are net in Congo where the Holle mine produces from rich sylvinite deposits.

The Sales Comparison Approach to estimating the value of a mineral property must always be attempted1 . In addition to other parameters, the approach depends heavily on the availability of transaction data. The consideration for the mineral property must be in form of cash, cash equivalent or other consideration. In other words, “What dollar amount did the property sell for?” Mineral properties are generally real estate, albeit frequently buried deeply under the overlying surface real estate, unless the property may be a quarry. In some states, transactions must be recorded in county courthouses, and the sale consideration must be included. In such cases, the appraiser’s job is made easy. In other locations, the sale considerations are withheld in the courthouse data; but occasionally a local transfer tax is collected and recorded. Again, the appraiser’s job is made easy by back calculation with knowledge of the legislated transfer tax percentage. The worst problem occurs when the consideration for a mineral real estate sale is totally withheld. That may occur in so-called nondisclosure states. In the sintering of iron ores, the partial substitution of anthracite coal for coke breeze has been considered to be an effective way of reducing emissions and improvement in sintering properties. In the present study, the combustion characteristics of the anthracite coal and coke breeze were investigated and its influence on product sinter quality and sinter flue gases is being monitored. Pot trials are carried out with different coke breeze ratios, 0%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 100%. It is found that as the percentage of anthracite coal is increased from 0 to 100%, the sintering time decreased from 24 to 20 min, and the productivity increased from 2.25 to 2.60 t/h/m2. Up to 60% anthracite coal substitution Tumbler index (+ 6.3 mm%), Product yield (+ 5 mm%), and fines generation (− 5 mm%) is found 62.29%, 85.17%, and 15.33%; moreover, hematite ( Fe2O3), magnetite ( Fe3O4), calcium ferrite phases ( CaFe2O4, CaFe3O5), and Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) are major mineral phases found during microstructural analysis of product sinter. Little precise information is available on the effect of mining on the surface topography. It is often assumed that after mining the surface will simply sink. This is not an infallible conclusion as is well illustrated in two of the three examples herein. This paper describes the results of an attempt to precisely measure the surface movement in the area around coal pillars left in place for three oil wells in a completely mined and caved area at the Harwick Mine of the Duquesne Light Company. The dates when the various measurements were made are shown on the data sheets and indicate the rate of surface movement. These oil wells are identified as wells Nos. 2, 3, and 6. This mine property is located on the north side of the Allegheny River at Cheswick, Pennsylvania, and extends in a northerly and westerly direction about five miles. The three well pillars are situated on the westerly side of the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad some 2,000 feet from Rural Ridge, Pennsylvania (Fig, 1).

Respirable crystalline silica poses a significant health risk, with the American Lung Association estimating that 2.3 million workers are exposed to silica in the workplace. This includes mine workers as well as those in many other industries. Reducing dust formation is sometimes not possible so other methods to reduce exposure are critical. These methods include the use of surfactants to reduce airborne dust particles. However, it is the proper selection and application of surfactants that leads to reduced dust exposure. A discussion of how surfactants work, especially for silica dust, leads to guidance for surfactant selection followed by a review of technologies for their application.
