Molybdenite and chalcopyrite are two often-associated minerals. In Quebec, the Gaspe Copper Company, a subsidiary of the Noranda group, currently operates a molybdenite flotation circuit to recover a one percent trace of this mineral in the chalcopyrite concentrate. The low levels of molybdeni 2 preclude the use of flotation to remove molybdenum directly from the ore while scavenging of chalcopyrite concentrate for molybdenite yields a concentrate of the latter of somewhat inadequate quality. Such a situation could possibly best be solved by hydrometallurgical means, if molybdenite could be leached selectively from the chalcopyrite concentrate. Work in the field of extractive metallurgy was initiated about 22 years ago in the laboratory of the department of mining and metallurgy at Laval University, Quebec. Following a literature search, two objectives were selected. The present talk will outline some of the results obtained to-date and it is hoped the ensuing discussion of the paper can raise questions of immediate assistance to us for the future. First, as an immediate objective of-practical use, the oxidation rates for molybdenite and chalcopyrite in alkaline media would be studied under conditions of possible industrial application. Secondly, the kinetics of mass transfer of gases in pressure reactor are to be studied. Solubility data for various gases in aqueous solutions have been gathered by a few investigators, to mention the work of Pray1, Wadsworth2, Pawlek3 and Gerlach. Scattering in experimental results and discrepancies between authors are ominously present. Kinetics of mass transfer have somewhat been more neglected. A systematic investigation by the school of Berlin has greatly helped in the design of impeller most suitable for gas dispersion, without much reference however to the solid dispersing ability of the various designs. Variables affecting rates of gas transfer to the solution have not been studied. Studies on the aqueous oxidation of sulfide minerals are much more numerous. While molybdenite has been relatively less studied, work has been carried in two areas namely in alkaline oxidation of MoS2 , work performed by Dresher2 and Wadsworth, and in the hypochlorite leach of molybdenite by Bhappu4 and co-workers, These two methods showed appreciable rates of leaching for molybdenite. In general, comparisons between rates of oxidation of this sulfide with that for chalcopyrite have not been made.

Project engineering and development is a process of optimisation of capital, operating and financial costs, and extraction rates in the light of current and forecast economic conditions for the sale of the product. The aim of the process is to maximize financial returns to the sponsors (project owners) within many often conflicting constraints. Thus, the sponsor's engineering and financial staff have a common goal, with performance measured in financial terms. Consequently, each group must be aware of, and responsive to, the constraints imposed upon the other. For financial staff, the increasing size and complexity, and escalating capital costs of new ventures have required them to seek finance in larger amounts, and by non-traditional methods. In addition, senior management are requiring indications of the availability of finance as a pre-requisite to a decision to commence project development activities.

The Cutoff grade optimization is very critical to the open pit production scheduling. In case of single mineral deposits, algorithms have been developed for determining cutoff grade policy that maximizes the net present value (NPV) of yearly cash flows. For deter-mining the cutoff grade policy for projects with two minerals including stockpiles the problem becomes much more complex. The purpose of this paper is to present fundamentals of a generalized cutoff grade optimization algorithm that will maximize the NPV of a project subject to mining, milling, and marketing constraints. Benefits of the methodology developed are demonstrated on three different case studies.

It is no need to say that exploitation of industrial minerals has a close relation to development of the industries related. In the first stage, a small scale manufactures were initiated in areas producing some main raw material minerals. China and cement manufactures, for example, were established depending on the local occurrence of raw materials such as kaolin and limestone without exception. That is, the industrial development is greatly influenced by the local production of the raw materials in the stage. With the development of industrial technology, various kinds of raw material minerals are explored to meet the demands of industries in the second stage. New materials become indispensable, and low-grade raw material minerals, which were left as useless, are developed as useful materials. In the stage, the development of raw material minerals is accelerated by that of industrial technology related. However, industries mainly rely on domestic production of the min raw material minerals.

Maintaining satisfactory air quality in electrowinning tankhouses is problematic and costly, particularly as plant operating current densities have increased. Conventional approaches have not proved completely effective. These include the use of beads, hollow spheres, surfactants and coalescer devices. They require powerful ventilation systems to be installed. As workplace and environmental regulations become more stringent, containment of the acid mist at its source is more attractive. An electrode cap system based on this approach has been developed and tested in two commercial copper electrowinning tankhouses.

Coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion technology is regarded by the Department of Energy as near term, and potentially applicable to existing utility and industrial steam generators and for injection into blast furnaces. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing boilers, into blast furnaces. Therefore, the issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: (1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally-acceptable long-term reliable operation and (2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically. Some of the technological options have begun to be determined by projects already under way. However, many projects are still in the early stages of development.

Most contemporary mines have considerable amounts of data. Structured and unstructured large data sets are colloquially named big data. Much of the data in mining operations come from a variety of systems, each with different databases and reporting environments. Standard technology deployments create a Bsilo-ification^ of data leading to poor system benefit. Through modern server monitoring and systematic approach, data utilization and value can quantifiably be measured. The Data Utilization and Value Index (DUVI) can quantify business intelligence best practices and user interaction. This study seeks to provide a data management tool to measure data utilization across the process of converting data into action.

A viable mineral economy requires availability of economic deposits, the ability to exploit then, and protection of the public interests. The natural tendency for each party to consider only its legitimate self interests can lead to delays or deadlocks. The paper presents several viewpoints aimed at opening each party's mind to the ideas of others in the hope that negotiations might be more reasonable and rapid for the benefit of all concerned.

Today, I want to challenge this audience by charging each of you to be a greater manager and superior engineer to manage and engineer our way through the 1980's and profitably overcome all the present and proposed government regulations. May of the present and proposed regulations will tax you and your company's management and engineering to the brink of physical and monetary exhaustion, but I believe we can succeed and coal can be America's answer to her hungry energy needs. To put our 1980's challenge into perspective, I want to give two great challenges we must overcome. First - We must improve on our process of compliance to new government regulations in the technical and equipment end of our industry. The Lord said, "Let There Be Light". MSHA said, "Let there be light in underground coal mines". Since that time, we have lived through an unmanageable and tremendously costly period of compliance.

Large language models (LLMs) have generated a lot of hype since ChatGPT was released in early 2023. In essence, they allow people to interact with computer systems through natural language and have the ability to generate highly complex text, images and videos (Patil and Gudivada, 2024). It is clear that this technology has significant potential, however most mining companies have not yet found practical applications for it within their operations. In this paper, we present a range of such applications along with the tactical considerations associated with developing and implementing them. We have identified use cases across a variety of operational and functional areas within the mining industry and evaluated them based on their potential business value and ease of implementation. Firstly, we provide an overview of how LLMs work and a review of how LLMs are being applied in other industries to provide best practice inspiration for mining. Next, we present a list of possible applications in mining and a critical assessment of each use case. This section also includes a technical deep dive into the different methodologies for developing the technologies as well as an analysis of barriers to adoption within mining organizations. Finally, we share a discussion of the potential path forward for LLMs in mining and the impact they could have on the industry. We analyze the potential differences between early adopters and laggards in the artificial intelligence (AI) space. This research draws on interviews and surveys with artificial intelligence experts as well as mining subject matter experts to connect cutting edge thought leadership with the specific problems faced by our industry.

The literature defines rockbursts in slightly different ways based on their generation mechanisms, field phenomena, and degree of damage, but in a way that is almost consistent. Generally, a rockburst refers to seismic events that mainly happen in underground excavations, for purposes such as underground mining, road and railway tunnels, nuclear power, etc., and that are followed by the collapse and outburst of rocks. Long-term rockburst prediction can be abstracted as a classification problem mathematically, in which we can introduce deep learning to solve it. Further, using deep learning in rockburst prediction can overcome drawbacks such as subjectivity and inconsistency brought from previous traditional approaches. A rockburst data-set, was employed to evaluate the current method for predicting rockburst grade, and the good results of overall success rate were obtained. The results indicated that the proposed algorithms can speed up parameter optimization search, the proposed method is robust model and might hold a high potential to become a useful tool in rockburst prediction research.

Highly variable milling properties within a geologically complex porphyry copper deposit owned by Kennecott Corporation in Nevada made it necessary to estimate the copper recovery and concentrate grade in areas where actual test data was lacking. The estimation was made by first determining the relationships between the desired metallurgical properties and the ore's petrology (i.e. copper mineral type, rock type and copper grade). This relationship was then combined with the already estimated rock type, mineral type and copper grade data in the mineral block model to predict the milling properties.

Since the beginning of the computing age, technical software packages have not been developed to address only programming specialists but have been dedicated to process engineers. For process analysis, BRGM is developing and commercializing three packages: ? sampling software: ECHANT 2.0 for Windows ? material balance calculation: BILCO 2.0 for Windows ? steady-state simulator for plant design, adaptation and optimization: USIM PAC 2.1 for Windows This paper deals in a first part with the main features of these three packages. In a second part, advanced models are presented for SAG/ AG mills and flotation columns. An industrial case of application is shown for each of them.

Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world's aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world's commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted's discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville's method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer's work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today's aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:' building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth's crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. Mine workers are continuously exposed to a host of nonfatal stressors and potentially fatal hazards: noise exposure, excessive vibration, poor air quality, toxicant exposure, ignition of combustible gases, equipment-related accidents, and thermal heat stress. Wearable or portable sensors and contextual analytics provide a platform to unobtrusively collect and fuse multimodal health and safety data in real time to compute both acute safety and longitudinal health insights. This paper presents preliminary trial results, conducted by Simtars, VigiLife, Inc., and Queensland Mines Rescue Service, of the application of wearable sensors to monitor heat stress and other vital biometrics for mines rescue personnel.

To prevent mine floor heave, the mechanisms of floor heave must be fully understood. Based on the field study, the mechanisms of two types of floor heaves are analyzed in this paper. The mechanical models for the two types of floor heaves are developed. The floor heave can be predicted by the developed mechanical models and the control measures are recommended.

The 32nd annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser, sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014. Each year, one living Hall of Fame inductee, up to three Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, and recipients of an Industry Partnership Award and a Special Citation are recognized for their respective contributions to the mining industry. Armine Frederick Ban?eld Jr., past chairman and founder of Mintec, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ, will be honored as the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee at the awards banquet. Banfield founded Mintec from his Tucson apartment in 1970 and expanded it to a global operation. Under his guidance, Mintec won the 2013 President?s E-Award for Exports ? the highest recognition any United States company may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Corale L. and James A. Brierley, founder and principal of Brierley Consultancy LLC; David Nicholas of Call and Nicholas Inc. and Scott M. Shields of Joy Global. High value materials, such as gold, platinum and other precious metals are subject to loss through unauthorized removal from mines, smelters, refiners, and other places where such materials are processed. A study published in 20011 determined that between 1994 and 1998 an average of 603 kilograms of gold per year was stolen from South African miners and subsequently recovered. This does not include the gold that was stolen but not recovered. At 2011 prices, 603 kilograms of gold would be worth approximately $33 million. Mine security personnel believe that the unrecovered stolen gold far exceeds what is recovered2. Traditionally, metal detectors have been used to screen personnel leaving secure areas to discourage such unauthorized removal. However, with the current near-record prices of gold, platinum, and other precious metals, it has become worthwhile for people exiting a facility to walk out with quantities of product that are too small for ordinary metal detectors to register, resulting in substantial financial losses.
