The critical surface tension of wetting (?c) of Cu2S, FeS2, PbS, and MoS2 were determined by plotting flotation recovery versus YLV which was arranged by methanol, and Extra-polating to % R = 0. ?c values ranged from 26 dyne cm-1 for MoS2 to 49 dyne cm-1 for PbS and elemental sulfur gave a value of 31.5 dyne cm-1. Minerals exhibiting natural flotability of different extents, could be separated from their mixtures in the absence of conventional flotation reagents, but controlled ?LV. Correlations between non-stoichiometry and degree of natural hydrophobicity for MOS2 are also reported in this paper.

This paper focuses on remediation of a 3.6 km long water conveyance tunnel that suffered two large falls of ground (FoGs), one of which subsequently progressed to the ground surface, resulting in full collapse of the tunnel. The tunnel is part of a network of water conveyance tunnels and open channels that direct water into two turbines located in an underground powerhouse, originally constructed in the 1970s. At the time of construction, the tunnel was partially supported with shotcrete or rock bolts, with no further ground support added since construction. Two sonar surveys in 019 and 01 identied two adacent large FoGs in the tunnel, approimately 1.2 km from the tunnel outlet. Historical geological and geotechnical information indicated that the FoGs occurred within a 60 m wide fault zone. Remediation plans were developed, which included stabilization of the outlet channel, the portal, the tunnel leading up to the FoG areas (1.2 km length) and the FoG areas. Several remediation options were considered to restore the tunnel, including construction of a diversion tunnel to bypass the FoGs or remediation of the FoG areas with steel ribs and backlling the void above the FoGs to surface.

Many recent mine developments in North America are located in remote northern regions with extreme winter temperatures in the range of -20oF to -60°F. In addition, many locations are subject to very heavy snowfall. This paper discusses some of the key considerations in the planning and design of mine plant buildings, particularly concentrators, located in these regions. SUMMARY & CONCLUSIONS The subject is considered under three main headings: I. Building Out line and Structural Frame 2. Wall and Roof Materials 3. Foundations The plan outline of a mine plant building will naturally be governed by the scope and layout of the process equipment it contains. The selection of roof profile, on the other hand, will generally depend upon a number of factors extraneous to the process e.g. snow conditions. When these factors are considered for concentrators in cold locations, a flat or stepped roof will usually be more economical and suitable than a sloping roof. The materials normally used for the structural framework of concentrators are the same as used for other industrial buildings, namely steel, concrete and wood. Naica consists of at least 10 mantos and 40 chimneys that have produced over 15 million tens of ore with 10% Zn, 13% Pb and 13 oz/ton Ag. The ore occurs in thick-bedded, folded Cretaceous limestone. Fractures and 26 Ma old felsite dikes with an initial strontium isotopic ratio of 0.708 localize the mineralization. The mantos follow the dikes and have abundant early skarn with manganohedenbergite, calcic garnet, idocrase, quartz, calcite, wollastonite, schellite and later sulfides. The chimneys arise from the mantos and change from silicate-rich to silicate-free sulfide limestone replacements. Carbon, oxygen and sulfur isotope data on carbonates, silicates, sulfides and sulfates are compatible with a single evolving (magmatic?) fluid.

A study was undertaken to investigate the liberation behavior of coal macerals through size reduction and density separation. It was seen that the liberation of coal organic components could be achieved by size reduction, allowing selective separation of coal organic components. However, the degree of liberation is dependent on the history of coal: the extent of liberation decreased when the size of the primogeniture coal decreased. The liberation of coal macerals was analyzed by examining the Liberation Index. It was seen that although comminution produced fine particles enriched in inertinite (primarily fusinite and semifusinitie), these particles were less liberated than the coarser particles. However, the liberation of macerals increased when all the feed was ground to a finer size.

Bentonite collected from Nowshera (Pakistan) was treated with NaCl, and the < 2-μm clay fractions were separated by sedimentation process. The textural changes in NaCl treated purified bentonite were compared with raw and physically purified sample. It was detected that the NaCl-treated purified bentonite and the sample purified by simple sedimentation, respectively, consist of sodium-montmorillonite and calcium-montmorillonite as a major clay mineral. The honeycombed-type morphology was observed for both the purified samples; however, the particles of NaCl treated purified bentonite were relatively in a compact form. The particle sizes of both the purified samples were found considerably smaller. The high volume percent of the fine particles was noticed in the NaCl-treated purified bentonite. This attributed that the sodium exchange has a valuable impact on the bentonite dispersion in aqueous media during particle size measurement. The relatively high mesopore area/volume and micropore area/volume and specific surface area (SSA) were detected in purified samples. The NaCl-treated purified sample showed relatively high mesopores area/volume than the sample obtained by simple sedimentation. These changes seem to be originated from either high montmorillonite contents and/or the smaller particle size, which might be produced after the layer rearrangement during the interlayer cation replacement by Na+ ions. The large SSA and high porosity of purified samples particularly the NaCl-treated bentonite suggest their potential use as adsorbents, catalysts, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

New Gold?s New Afton Mine, located 8 km (5 miles) west of Kamloops, British Columbia, is a 4.5-Mt/a (5-million stpy) block cave mine, making it the highest tonnage underground hard rock mine in Canada. The reserve is estimated at 52.5 Mt (55.9 million st) with grades of 0.65 g/t (0.02 oz/st) gold and 0.93 percent copper (2012). Commercial production was achieved in July 2012 and nameplate production was achieved ahead of schedule in September 2012, with the cave breaching to surface in 2013. The mill has a SAG and a ball mill with a froth flotation circuit.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, 150 km southwest of Ciudad Juarez. The ore deposit was discovered in 1979, and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2400 tpd from an ore reserve of 8.5M tonnes. Grades average about 8 % Zn, 0.5 % Pb, 0.2 % Cu and 50 g Ag per tonne. Substantial inflows of water into the under-ground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark was operated through a joint venture, Minera Bismark, S.A. de C.V., with U.S. and Mexican partners, but since early 1993, it is wholly Mexican-owned and operated.

The development of pelletizing during the last ten years has continued, however, self-fluxing pellets have not been regularly and commercially produced for use in blast furnaces, except as Kobe Steel, Ltd., Japan. This paper tells about unique developments for self-fluxing pellets, and their effects when used in Kobe Steel&apos;s No. 3 blast furnace at the Nadahama Works (inner volume 1845 Nm3, hearth diameter 9.5 m)., Several phases of the pelletizing process are discussed individually, and also their relation to performance in blast furnace operation. Special emphasis is placed on proper preparation of the limestone added to the raw materials, and indurating at optimum conditions. Means of improving pellet quality by correct control of size distribution of the raw materials used in pelletizing, and indurating temperatures, are also discussed. As basicity (CaO/SiO2) of pellets increased 0. 1, coke consumption decreased 3. 8 to 4. 2 kg per ton of hot metal, when using 70% pellets in the iron burden.

In the USA, miners are at higher risk for work-related disorders that could precipitate an opioid prescription, injury-related opioid prescriptions, and opioid overdose. We aimed to support prevention of these outcomes with an “opioid hazard awareness” miner safety training module. In January and February 2020, the training module was embedded within required mining safety and health training for stone, sand, and gravel miners in Massachusetts (USA). Training impact and reception were assessed with a pre- and post-training survey of trainee characteristics, training content knowledge, and attitudes. Over 800 miners were trained and over 600 responded to surveys. We found statistically significant improvements in opioid risk factor knowledge and knowledge of resources to help a coworker. Nonstigmatizing attitudes were high both at baseline and following the training. The training was perceived as relevant and useful by trainees. Improving opioid hazard awareness in high-risk worker populations has potential to reduce opioid dependence and downstream impacts including overdose death. Employer injury-prevention efforts should be reinforced while worker health and safety training enhances awareness of opioid-related harms and prevention strategies for miners and other high-risk worker populations.

Texasgulf Inc. currently operates an open pit phosphate mine in the central coastal plain of North Carolina. The area of phosphate deposition lies within the Aurora Phosphate district which consists of an embayment which is in the center of the Neogene phosphate deposition. A variety of solid and liquid fertilizer products are produced at the Texasgulf complex. One of these products is known as North Carolina Natural Phosphate (NCNP). New potential for use of unacidulated natural phosphate, now exists in regions with acid soils due to the discovery of the findings from recent research, cost advantages, and moves to reduce chemical inputs.

A new coal boom is under way in western Canada. As recently as the mid-1960&apos;s, the coal industry in western Canada was considered stagnant and, by some people, dying. But Japan&apos;s growing need for coking coal, which became more pronounced in 1966, sparked great interest in western Canadian reserves.&apos; As a result of a rapidly expanding export market and growth in domestic demand, Canadian coal production spurted to 16.6 million tons in 1970. Production in 1965 was 11.5 million tons. Today, about 60 percent of Canada&apos;s output comes from western Canada, but by 1975, 87 percent (23.1 million tons) is expected to come from this area, and 96 percent (68.3 million tons) by 1990. Opening, developing and operating new coal mines to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding market for western Canadian metallurgical coals pose some unique and difficult problems. Covering nearly every aspect of opening properties in remote areas, the problems are met in exploration, transportation, construction, mine operations, coal preparation, manpower and ecology. Paul Weir Company has been involved as coal consultants on various projects in western Canada for some years. In presenting this paper, we make no attempt to present an in-depth or detailed analysis of any one specific situation. The concurrent observation of the phenomena of alkali-aggregate reaction and development of efficient dust collection systems on rotary kilns made mandatory the process modifications to produce low alkali cements. Such low alkali cements as were available prior to these recent changes were either the rare result of low alkali raw materials, the loss of alkalies with dust loss from the kiln stack, or in some instances by the use of CaC12 in the kiln feed to increase volitalization of the alkalies and their subsequent loss or discard with the normal dust emission from the kiln. The relative slowly soluble nature of natural occurring alkali minerals in cement raw materials as compared to the very soluble nature of the alkali salts as present in cement kiln reaction products, either in clinker or in dust emission led to the development of the water leaching system. Two distinctly different problems of leaching are created by the two major systems of portland cement production, the wet and dry processes. The wet process is characterized by moderate dust loads and concentration of soluble forms of alkali in the dust. Further the return of the leached dust slurry does not materially change the characteristics of kiln feed on reintroduction and subsequently does not materially influence kiln operation. The dry process differs in high levels of dust emission and the presence in the collected dust of large amounts of unreacted kiln feed with its sparingly soluble alkali minerals. In the dry process reintroduction of leached dust slurry changes the dry process to what may be classed as a damp process. This change results in some decrease in kiln capacity and creates conditions of operation which are uncommon to either the wet or dry process.

"The US coal mining industry has suffered a recent decline in profits caused by a combination of decline in commodity demand and more restrictive government regulation, forcing coal mining companies to cease production in numerous mines. A 40% decrease in the total number of coal mines occurred from 1994 to 2000. The number of mines remained relatively constant until 2008 when a change of government sparked a series of new environmental regulations which have contributed to another 15% decrease from 2008 to 2016. In contrast, production has only decreased by 3%, increasing from 1994 to 2008, and then decreasing since 2008. However, this value is skewed by large increases in sub-bituminous coal production and decreases in other coal ranks. Several aspects assist in executive decisions on mine longevity and economic worth. Studies of open source mine data collected by mandated government surveys coupled with commodity history can be used to find relationships between mine closures and these elements, which include statistics on production tonnage, seam height, coal rank, etc. This paper looks at coal mining trends since 1994 by comparing mine, market, and regulation factors that may influence mine closure. INTRODUCTION The US coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history, and regulatory impact. TRENDS SINCE 1994 Each year, US coal mines are required to submit data on a wide variety of categories to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data includes administrative records, production values, and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the following figures."

Bench-scale beneficiation studies were made on Idaho dolomitic phosphate rock using the TVA carbonate flotation process. The process employed diphosphonic acid as a phosphate mineral depressant and fatty acid as a carbonate mineral collector. Silica was subsequently rejected as float using an amine collector, with phosphate product recovered as the sink fraction. Two samples of prepared flotation feed from commercial operation were used; one contained 21% P205 and 3.2% MgO, and the other contained 26% P205 and 1.8% MgO. The results indicate that concentrates containing 31-33% P205 and 1% or less MgO can be obtained, with P205 recovery of about 80%.

A major investigative&apos; program was conducted on the development of an acceptable substitute organic binder for bentonite for the pelletizing of the Iron Ore Company of Canada&apos;s Carol concentrate. The first phase of the program covered an evaluation of several organic binders in laboratory tire balling in order to identify the most promising potential organic binders. Based on the green ball quality obtained, Peridur C-10, Alchem 8C26 and peat moss were selected for full scale pot-grate testwork. The selected binders were tested with various pelletizing mixes (acid, dolomite, limestone and fully fluxed). The pot-grate test results showed that an acceptable pellet quality can be produced with the use of Peridur C-10.

Without a doubt, the scope of China?s coal boom has been nonstop. Despite the world economic slowdown, China?s year-on-year gross domestic product (GDP) jumped 10.3 percent year-on-year in 2010, boosted by a faster than expected 9.8 percent expansion in the fourth [ ] quarter. And, the first quarter of 2011 expanded another 9.7 percent. According to a frequently cited statistic, the country is building two mid-sized coal plants each week. This amounts to a yearly increase equivalent to the entire power grid in the United Kingdom. China?s coal production was doubled in the last 10 years, from 1.044 Gt (1.15 billion st) in 1999 to 3.2 Gt (3.52 billion st) in 2010. This is 3.2 times the U.S. production (986 Mt or 1.085 billion st) and nearly half (46.3 percent) of the world?s total coal production (6.91 Gt or 7.6 billion st). This rapid increase of demand for coal has made China the world?s largest coal importer in 2009. With the economic situation improving, this trend is expected to continue.

Pit lake chemistry depends on the lithology and hydrologic characteristics of the ultimate pit surface, the availability of buffering capacity in the wall rock versus oxidizable sulfide content, and the alkalinity of recharging ground water. In this paper, we assess the geochemistry of 11 existing pit lakes, ranging from the acidic Red Hill and Berkeley pit lakes (pH 2.6 to 2.8) to the alkaline Yerington Pit lake (pH 8.45). Predicted pit lake chemistry is similar to that in existing pits with the long-term pit lake chemistry lying on a geochemical continuum between end members consisting of influent calcium bicarbonate ground water, and naturally occurring sulfate-rich evaporite playa lakes.

In most open pit operations mining porphyry type deposits, production planning rests on an are reserve inventory block file which is derived from diamond drill hole data. With such a practice, the way by which block values are generated is critical and in the recent years many studies deal with the comparison of different estimation methods for block grades (Mueller, E. (1), Knudsen et al (2) (3), Barnes, (4), Williamson and Mueller (5). Typically in such studies, one selects a bench or a group of benches where there is a "sufficient" number of blast holes (BH) with assay values in each of the blocks (generally 30.5 x 30.5 m (100 x 100 ft) or 15.2 x15.2 m (50 x50 ft). Then the arithmetic mean of the BH values in each block is computed and it is assumed to represent the real block grade against which different estimated values are compared. However it is sometimes observed that the variation of these BH values within a block is high and that their arithmetic average may significantly differ from the real average grade of the block (Barnes (4). The problem of the precision of the mean BH grade in a block has been examined by Williamson and Langlois (6) in an experimental way. They strove to find a better estimate of the average block grade than the mean BH grade but their results were not conclusive. The purpose of this study is to investigate the same problem within the frame of geostatistical models (David (7). Besides practical results obtained with these models, two general points are emphasized and illustrated in the text. First, "good results" are obtained if "good geostatistics" is done (David et al (8).
