Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. In its 2001 diesel particulate matter (DPM) rule for metal and nonmetal underground mines, MSHA established an interim concentration limit of 400 micrograms of total carbon (TC) per cubic meter of air (400TCµg/m3), and a final concentration limit of 160TCµg/m3, to be phased in over five years. Following a court challenge to the 2001 rule, MSHA, industry and organized labor reached a partial settlement of the litigation under which the agency agreed to issue a proposal to amend the 2001 rule by, among other things, changing the surrogate from TC to elemental carbon (EC), applying MSHA's traditional hierarchy of controls, and revising requirements for one-year special extensions for complying with the final DPM exposure limit. MSHA issued a final rule in 2005 converting the interim concentration limit from 400TCµg/m3 to 308 micrograms of EC per cubic meter of air (308ECµg/m3) based on a miner?s personal exposure. Pending further rulemaking, MSHA retained the final concentration limit of 160TCµg/m3. In May 2006, MSHA issued a final rule that clarified that the final limit of 160TCµg/m3 would be based on a miner?s personal exposure rather than as a concentration limit. The 2006 rule also phased in the final DPM limit in three steps over two years, beginning in May 2006 at 308ECµg/m3, followed eight months later in January 2007 with a limit of 350TCµg/m3, and finally reaching 160TCµg/m3 in May 2008. Also in the 2006 rule, MSHA committed to converting the 160TCµg/m3 limit to an EC limit in future rulemaking. This paper reviews the DPM exposure limits in the context of the MSHA rulemakings and discusses the DPM engineering controls that were utilized by mine operators to attain compliance with each progressively lower limit.

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 meters (8 feet) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting and saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can effectively prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile, implying that great care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a full depth of at least 2.4 meters (8 feet) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world’s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain, or Germany are only forerunners of this development—their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic, and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as how can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry’s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia, and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later.

"Once every four years, the global mining industry gathers in Las Vegas, NV for MINExpo International. According to the show’s organizer, The National Mining Association (NMA), about 44,000 people attended the three-day show from Sept. 26-29. It was a show that featured the latest and greatest in equipment and technology. It also served as the backdrop for a snapshot of the state of the industry and while the picture of a global industry is never completely clear at any one time, one thing that is evident is technology has become a major force in the way mining is done.Had it not been for the awe-inspiring “iron” that was on the show floor in the form of haul trucks and shovels weighing hundreds of tons, one could be forgiven for thinking that they were at the Consumer Electronics Show. From training simulators designed to give a realistic experience of operating mining equipment to virtual reality technology that can take the user into the depths of an underground mine or the middle of a mapped ore deposit, an overriding theme of MINExpo 2016 was that the mining industry is connected like never before.In the north hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center was the GE Mining booth that was designed to showcase its efforts to help create a mine that will be connected from the front office to the face of the underground wall or bottom of the openpit. GE Mining called its booth a digital mine, and it included a suite of technologies that can improve performance, reliability, safety and operations. GE Mining said it views each mine as a mini-city, requiring power, water and transportation. Intelligent, real-time monitoring across the mine allows operators to make data-driven decisions that improve equipment reliability and optimize mine operations for substantial savings. And GE Mining was just one of many exhibitors showing off software that allows various types of equipment to communicate. Its booth sat in the shadow of the Komatsu booth with its new 360-t (400-st) 980E-4 haul truck that included GE’s 360-t (400-st) electric wheel motor. This is just one example of how technology is connecting machines, operations and people around the world and how mining is moving forward."

Atmospheric conditions underground are constantly changing and from a safety perspective, it is critical to identify when conditions are trending abnormally. Atmospheric monitoring in underground coal mines allows mine operators to analyze atmospheric conditions underground in real-time. Real-time monitoring can then be used to identify whether atmospheric conditions underground have become problematic. The implementation of a risk assessment and management process allows operators to then use a risk-informed decision making to identify comprehensive site specific ventilation parameters. Establishing risk-informed ventilation parameters and tracking conditions relative to these parameters, management can modify ventilation plans as mine conditions develop to manage evolving risks. Ventilation risk assessment and management allows developing atmospheric monitoring technologies to be fully utilized in order to increase safety standards in the United States. This paper reviews general risk assessment approaches, state of the art ventilation based risk assessment, and the risk assessment and management application within the United States regulatory framework.

The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially in this area: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia; historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to/the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills; on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon; and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape face or is of major importance in this area; and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type.

Technical innovation in electrical and electronic equipment with new functions and design, stimulate consumer?s purchasing desire towards the latest equipments and this leads the rapid increase in the production of increased amount of waste materials Treason et al (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category; this emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. Recycling of electronic waste is an important subject not only from the point of waste treatment but also from the recovery aspect of valuable materials. However, recycling of electronic scrap is still quite limited due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al. 2005). A bioleaching based process offers a number of advantages compared to the conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). The advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and eco-friendly approach besides, generation of less active leach residue then other metallurgical processes. Though, biohydrometallurgical process has been successfully applied for the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al. 2003; Rawling 2000), data pertaining to its application for the extraction of electronic scrap is still scanty. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for extraction of metals from electronic scrap/printed circuit boards (Brandl et al. 2001; Faramarzi et al. 2004; Choi et al. 2004, Ilyas et al. 2007; Ilyas et al. 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans) or cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has the following advantages: (i) ability to grow under higher pH, and thus is more suitable in bioleaching of alkaline solid waste (ii) a generally faster leaching process with shorter lag phase (iii) Chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g. organic acids) with metal ion, thus reduce its toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller et al. 1993; Aung and Ting 2005). Start with your assessment of the minerals business —domestic mining as well as operational and consulting perspectives. As a third generation miner, I have been living the mining business for as long as I can remember. I have watched commodity prices produce boom and bust cycles in places like Price, Utah (coal), Douglas, Arizona (copper) and Eureka, Nevada (gold). It is unsettling to see how our industry has fluctuated, but it always seems to rebound if you can stick out the down cycles. However, our most recent dip in the cycle was, in my opinion, characteristically and permanently different. In the past, when prices went south, people hunkered down and waited out the cycle until things came back, much the same as they had every other time. Not this time. This time, we saw a consolidation of the industry in proportions never seen before. Mega-mergers like Exxon-Mobil, Phelps Dodge-Cyprus and Newmont-Normandy have changed the complexion of our industry forever. And that is true not just of the mining companies; it happened across the supporting business lines as well. As a midsized niche engineering and environmental service provider to the mining industry, companies like mine are few and far between these days. The lean cycle saw many of the small and midsized providers get gobbled up by consulting giants like URS and TetraTech. The mentality of a mega-company, whether a commodity producer or a goods or service provider, is different than that of their small- and medium-sized counterparts.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream acidity is widely used in MIW (mining influenced water). Tailoring pH (a measure of acidity) finds application for controlling key chemistry in both process and waste streams. Traditional lime addition for neutralization and precipitation is most often used but has high reagent costs and results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. A new adaptation of BPS’s patented DEMET™ technology (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform offers a potentially improved and “reagentless” alternative to traditional chemical addition for pH adjustment. Electricity rather than chemical addition utilized in BPS’s proprietary approach controllably tailors target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost processing technique yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. BPS’s “green” approach may yield lower operating (OPEX) and life cycle costs and significant reductions (up to 50%) in sludge generation compared to conventional lime treatment. It can also allow new opportunities to generate revenue via selective recovery of valuable processing byproducts. Specific savings and revenues depend on the target site chemistries, details, and processing goals. A more detailed discussion of the process and its operational principles may be found in Reference One.[1] Here application of the BPS treatment to POx (Pressure Oxidation) leaching as an alternative to traditional chemical addition is examined. An example operation process flow for gold mining is considered.[2] Promising processing points for potentially replacing conventional processes with DEMET are noted. The possibilities for lowering OPEX costs, lessening sludge creation, and capturing various valuable byproducts and residuals are examined. Financial life cycle benefit estimates of the principal gains provided by DEMET application to the example operation are noted. Extension and generalization of the analyses to a wider range of scenarios is explored."

Introduction Coal has always been China's predominant energy resource. The country ranks among the three richest countries in coal reserves in the world, next to the US and the Soviet Union. According to China's Ministry of Coal Industry (MCI), coal accounted for about 72% of the total national energy consumption. Despite efforts to increase the output of oil and hydropower, coal is predicted to remain dominant on the energy scene by increasing its share to 77% by the turn of the century. To match the rapid growth in the agricultural and industrial sectors, MCI has targeted the coal industry to double coal output from 600 Mt/a (660 million stpy) in 1981 to 1.2 Gt/a (1.3 billion stpy) by the year 2000. How is this goal to be achieved? According to MCI, it will be accomplished by: • building new underground and surface mines with a total output of 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); • increasing the output of existing state-controlled mines from the present 344 Mt/a (368 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); and • developing and increasing the output of small, local mines run by province, county, and production brigade from the present 276 Mt/a (304 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy). Building new underground and surface mines New underground coal mines will be developed in areas where the coal industry has already made headway and infrastructures currently exist. This is to optimize hardpressed capital spending on investment. Ten existing coal production bases were selected in nine different provinces that met these requirements. The underground mines scheduled to be constructed in stages at he existing coal production bases will have a total output of 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) by the end of the century. Regarding surface mines, four mines in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and one in Shanxi province have been earmarked for construction during the same period. By the year 2000, these surface mines are expected to produce 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy). Foreign equipment, machinery, and surface mine stripping technology were all involved in different degrees in the development of the five new surface mines. Some have signed joint venture agreements. Occidental Petroleum Corp. is in a joint venture with China in developing Ping-shou's 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) Antaibao No. 1 open-pit. The Shentou power station, situated nearby, is anticipated to consume 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of the coal it produces. Some is designated for export. Increasing output There are 554 state-controlled mines that have been in operation since before 1980. They produce 344 Mt/a (379 million stpy). To increase capacity, MCI has laid out some guidelines. • Coal prospecting near existing mines must be given top priority and intensified so that workable reserves can be increased. This would lengthen the mines' useful life. • Many mines and slopes that were constructed during the 1950s are very small and densely populated. Building on earlier work, an analysis relevant to international (Australasian) minerals trade is developed which accounts for both the impetus of globalization and national reaction or protection. At the firm level, integrated multinationals are contrasted with trade service providers. At the industry level tariff and, particularly, such barriers as quotas, standards, labor and environmental issues are explored. Specific areas examined include: location of both inventories and processing, sources of finance and currency risk, shipping availability and terms as related to processing level, residuals management or environmental controls, and “fair” labor standards. Intraregional rather than global trade is currently most likely.

Coal that meets customer specifications is often stored in silos before being loaded into cars. It is often found that coal in a particular car does not meet customer specifications due to the mixing of coal inside the silo. Some new contracts require meeting specifications on a per car basis. Silo flow models are used to predict quality in such cases. However, coming up with an accurate silo flow model for each case is very difficult and time consuming. This paper examines the viability of using an online analyzer at the loading end of the silo in conjunction with a feedback circuit, to optimize the quality of the coal being loaded into trains, so that each car meets quality specifications.

Foskor operates a mine in the Northern Province of the Republic of South Africa exploiting the igneous complex at Phalaborwa. It produces about 3 million tons of phosphate concentrate per year by means of froth flotation from 26million tons of ore of which 16 million is mined and milled onsite. The remaining 10 million tons originate at the Palabora Mining Company and is pumped as a slurry to Foskor. Two types of ore are mined and milled namely Foskorite and Pyroxenite. (The main mineral content of this ore is Apatite, Phlogopite and Diopside.) After three stages of crushing the ore is milled using 24 rod mills and 5 verti mills. The apatite is then recovered using four stages of froth flotation. The stocks of Foskorite ore are rapidly being depleted and the PMC tailings will also fall away by the year 2002 so that the whole mining operation will then be centred around the Pyroxenite ore. This will lead to substantial increases inproduction costs. The recoveries achieved in the flotation plant are largely dependent on the successful operation of the comminution section. Parts of this plant are now 35 years old and the advantages of re-engineering, new technology and automation can only be applied to a limited extent in an effort to reduce costs. It was then decided to investigate alternative milling methods, both wet and dry.

Coal dust explosions in underground coal mines are prevented by generous application of rock dust (usually limestone). If an explosion should occur, the rock dust disperses, mixes with the coal dust and prevents flame propagation by acting as a thermal inhibitor or heat sink. To investigate this process in more detail, a number of explosion experiments using various coal dust and limestone rock dust mixes have been carried out at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM). These were conducted in a single entry of about 1600 ft (488m) in length and initiated with a methane gas explosion. A consistent set of post-explosion floor dust samples were taken along the entry after each test. These dust samples have been analyzed in the laboratory using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and solubility to determine how the limestone rock dust behaved during the coal dust / rock dust explosions. The preliminary results are reported in this paper and indicate that the chemistry of limestone plays an important role in its capacity to inhibit coal dust explosions. The results also show that it may be possible to estimate the intensity of the explosion using these conventional methods of analysis. The Cresson gold deposit is in the southcentral portion of the Cripple Creek mining district in central Colorado (Fig. 1). The deposit is hosted by a series of 32 Ma (Kelley, 1995) felsic to mafic, alkaline volcanic rocks that were deposited in a diatremal environment. Mineralization in the Cresson deposit is structurally con-trolled. It occurs as disseminated and vein type. Gold deposition is closely associated with potassium-pyrite metasomatism and quartz-telluride vein development(Pontius, 1992). The Cresson deposit is owned by the Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Co. (CC&V), a joint venture between Pikes Peak Mining (67%) and Golden CycleGold (33%).

Whilst mine planners almost universally assume deterministic forward commodity prices when undertaking valuations of mining projects, historical data well demonstrates that those prices are quite volatile. This paper seeks to understand and quantify how this forward price uncertainty will impact mining project valuation. This paper will also present a way of computing an upper bound on the expected Net Present Value (NPV) of a mining project given forward commodity price uncertainty.

A clay binding agent has been investigated to enhance flotation recovery of bitumen from Canadian high fines oil sand in the Clark Hot Water Extraction (CHWE) process. Selective adsorption on fine particles and subsequent agglomeration are critical for the success of clay binder enhanced oil sand flotation. A number of flotation tests have been performed at different reagent dosages under different operating conditions such as pulp pH to evaluate the reagent performance. Dissipative Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM-D) analyses of clay binder adsorption on quartz were carried out to better understand process mechanisms. It has been found that use of clay binder in flotation resulted in an absolute bitumen recovery increase of 18%, 25%, and 11% for the high-, medium-, and low-grade oil sand samples, respectively. The QCM-D analyses have revealed that the clay binder was strongly adsorbed on the SiO2 surface.

This paper presents the desulphurisation of a fine graphite powder below 80 µm by high gradient magnetic separation. The removal of pyrite (FeS2) and pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) from the fine graphite powder was carried out with a modified version of the Sala dry HGMS with vibration assistance. In addition, a comparative study with dry and wet HGMS systems has also been performed. In order to establish the performance of the desulphurisation, a test series of varying parameters such as magnetic induction, matrix type/configuration and vibration were performed. As an equipment/process for removing sulphurous impurities from the fine graphite powder, the dry HGMS is deemed useful and comparative with the wet HGMS.

Lime addition to acid mine drainage waters (AMD), possibly accompanied by aeration, has been the basis for their remediation by precipitation of predominantly metal hydroxides. An efficient novel alternative technique causes precipitation of double M(II)-M(III) hydroxy sulfates which readily precipitate and are easily dewatered. When the Fe(II)/Fe(III) + Al(III) ratio of the AMD is appropriate, the Green Precipitate (GP) Process provides a more effective alternative to normal liming/aeration. The process can be adapted to give a continuous in-line treatment by the choice of suitable computer-controlled reactors designed to improve the liming efficiency, reduce scaling and control the rate of treatment. The processes are described in terms of the chemistry involved.
