Many concepts concerning equipment selection, performance prediction, and evaluation of support requirements for tunnel construction in soil or hard rock tunnels cannot be extrapolated directly for application in soft rock (compressive strength between 1.0 and 35.0 MPa). Case histories for small diameter (less than 3.5 m) tunnels in Austin, Texas, are analyzed to gain insight into particular problems encountered during tunnel excavation in weak sedimentary rock, and the performance of different excavation systems are compared.

The U.S. coal industry has long utilized the pillar-extraction mining technique as a method for maximizing coal recovery. Like longwall mining, it causes large-scale movements that progressively propagate from mine-level to the ground surface and may affect the groundwater regime, surface drainage and surface structures. The U.S. Department of Energy, in an effort to foster in- creased use of total extraction mining techniques, has recognized the need for a better understanding of these movements that will lead to a greater compatibility between coal mining and present and future land use. As part of that goal, GAI Consultants, Inc. is currently in- stalling instrumentation to monitor the ground movements associated with pillar extraction mining at Kitt Energy Corporation's No. 1 mine in northern West Virginia.

P&H MinePro Services Canada is supplying Syncrude Canada three more of its model4100BOSS electric mining shovels. The shovels will be delivered during 2003. Syncrude’s oil sands operations already use five P&H shovels. The first 4100BOSS shovel was commissioned at Syncrude’s operation in northern Alberta, Canada in October 2001. The unit loads more than 9 kt/hr (10,000 stph) of unblasted oil sands. Since it began operation, the 4100BOSS has shown a 28% production increase over the four P&H 4100TS shovels also on site.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are crucial to green technology such as hybrid-electric vehicles, wind turbines and fluorescent light bulbs. As of 2011, China dominates the global production of REEs and is reducing its export quotas. To predict the supply of rare earths in the United States based on future supply scenarios, a web-based database and geographic visualization tool was built. Five case scenarios with varying levels of REE demand were created by varying several economic conditions including (1) international trade policy, (2) greenhouse gas regulations, (3) environmental mining regulations and (4) tech applicability ratio of REEs. The most likely scenario, which is based on current international demand levels, indicates the importance of expediting the development of extractive operations of current REE resources within the United States. The results of the different case scenarios are supported by using dynamic geographic maps indicating the location of rare earth ore (REO) resources.

The management of mine tailings poses a complex range of potential risks, including physical risks, such as the risk of catastrophic failure of a tailings facility and chemical risks such as the risk of long-term leaching of contaminants into the downstream environment. If these risks materialize, they can lead to a wide range of impacts on people and the environment, including human fatalities and severe impacts on downstream ecosystems, and the costs of recovery borne by industry, communities, governments, and society as a whole can be immense. Tailings facility failures in Canada (2014), Brazil (2015 and 2019), South Africa (2022), and in other locations around the world underscore how high the stakes are when mines produce and manage tailings (WISE Uranium Project 2019). Understandably, many people do not trust the mining industry to manage tailings responsibly. As an industry, it is our responsibility to manage tailings in a manner that is responsible and strives to minimize harm associated with tailings management, including effectively managing both the physical and chemical risks associated with tailings. Standards have an important role to play in responsible tailings management by setting expectations for standards of care and providing a means to measure and report on performance. In jurisdictions with strong legal requirements for tailings management, standards play a complementary role, pushing performance improvements in areas that may be difficult or impossible to address in legal requirements. In jurisdictions where legal requirements are lagging, standards may represent the de facto leading practice and may be the primary tool to help ensure responsible tailings management. Implementation of standards can help companies demonstrate that tailings are being responsibly managed and help build trust and credibility. Most importantly though, standards are important tools to help ensure that the risks associated with tailings are reduced, and that remaining risks are effectively managed. However, we must recognize that conformance with standards can have a down-side – the proverbial two-edged sword. Having standards is vital but there is a risk that implementing standards becomes a “box checking” exercise, with ongoing conformance leading to complacency. We must not allow ourselves to fall into the trap of believing that, just because we are complying with applicable standards and laws, we are therefore doing our best, and that “it can’t happen to us.” In addition, if conformance becomes the goal and the standard does not have mechanisms to drive continual improvement, then once the standard is met, there may be no incentive to improve. The point of complying with standards is not to pass the test. The point is to manage tailings responsibly, prevent catastrophic failures, and minimize harm. The point is to do better, because we must do better. To do that, we need to strive not for conformance, but for excellence in tailings management, driven by continual improvement and a quest to do better.

The substantial investment in tunnels anticipated in the next twenty years has focused new attention on the economics of tunnel construction itself and on some costly problems associated with underground work: the uncertain geologic conditions, the performance and adaptability of men and equipment, and the need for quicker, more efficient excavation methods. There also exists a need to develop better ways of estimating tunnel construction. Inaccuracies in current bid estimates stem from a number of causes, among them (1) the effects of geologic conditions, which are not adequately known prior to construction, (2) the dependence of actual cost on the construction method used and on the interactions among the operations occurring underground, and (3) the reliability of tunneling equipment. Inability to estimate final costs for conventional tunneling more accurately has in turn caused difficulty in gauging the costs and benefits attributable to new tunneling technologies either under development or for which R&D programs are planned. ATTRIBUTES OF THE TUNNEL COST MODEL This paper presents a computer based Tunnel Cost Model (TCM) which quantitatively assesses the uncertainties inherent in underground work, and is detailed enough to aid in preparing estimates or bids. The model employs appropriate techniques of subjective (or "degree of belief") probability and computer simulation of tunnel construction operations to estimate distributions of total tunnel

If you believe that the goal of the space program should be a permanent, manned presence in space, then you believe in space mining. Historically, mining has been an integral part of the frontier. For the space frontier, mining is absolutely necessary. Any large-scale space facility must be built from materials mined in space. The reason is simple: the cost of getting material off the earth overwhelms all other costs. The cost of launching a pound of material from earth into low earth orbit ranges from $5000 to $10,000. Multiply this number by three to get to geostationary orbit. With the added expense of landing on the moon, an object is worth more than its weight in gold. Most space projects are impossible if materials must be hauled out of earth's enormous gravity well. For example, habitats (large structures in free-fall that simulate earth's gravity) and massive solar power satellites will take millions of tons of material to construct. Transportation economics alone dictate space as the source for oxygen, construction materials, and metals, among others. Space mining is not concerned with introducing materials for terrestrial use. The need for materials in space is infinite. The challenge for the mining industry is enormous.

The liberation of intimately disseminated impurities from the coal matrix often demands that the material be ground to a high degree of fineness. Similarly, some technologies for coal utilization require superfine particles (i.e., sizes less than ten microns). This implies additional costs for coal preparation plants due to the high energy and media costs associated with fine grinding operations. Besides, there are problems such as sever product contaminations due to media wear and impairment of the quality of coal. Hence, proper choice of grinding media type is important from the viewpoints of cost reduction and product quality.

This paper presents the results of a study on the optimum auxiliary fan location to control air recirculation in dead-end workings where diesel-powered vehicles operate. Investigations were conducted with various secondary fan locations from the dead-end crosscut and with the intake air quantities varied using different auxiliary fans to control air recirculation and diesel particulate matter (DPM).

Although out of the ordinary, MINING ENGINEERING is pleased to present a few photographs that typify Western US mining activity during WWII. The photographs, taken by R.G. Zellers at Colorado mining operations between 1942 and 1946, were primarily intended for equipment manufacturers. The pictures capture scenes of hardworking miners during a time when output was essential to fuel a wartime effort. In addition to providing a rare opportunity to step back 40 years and view the equipment and activity common at the time, Zellers' skill with photo composition and his ability to obtain clarity in dimly lit underground operations gives viewers an acute awareness of the dampness and dirt of the mines, and a sense for the miners' limited working space.

A good quality assurance program at a coal mine or power plant is accurate, timely and consistent. The quality analysis is accurate due to a complete sampling of the coal stream loaded into the unit train. The sample analysis is accurate because standardized testing procedures are applied. Once an analysis is completed, the results must be communicated to the electric utility in a timely manner. The electric utility needs the results to better manage the coal inventory at its power plants. A quality assurance program can also help a mine deliver a consistent product to a utility's power plants. The importance of accuracy, timeliness and consistency are based on major changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry.

Coal production in the United States increased in2004 by 36 Mt (39.7 million st) to end the year at 1 Gt(1.11 billion st), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was a 3.7-percent in-crease from 2003’s 971.6 Mt (1.07 billion st) (Table 1).(All percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) Although U.S. coal consumption rose in 2004, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sectors by 1 percent and declined slightly in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption dropped by 2.4 percent. U.S. coal exports rose for the second consecutive year, while coal imports again increased to record levels. Coal stocks declined during the year, as electric generators used their stockpiles to helpmeet increased demands and missed shipments. Coal producers used their stockpiles to supplement their production levels.

Metallic magnesium is mostly used in lightweight alloys in order to decrease fuel consumption in automotive applications. Several different production processes are currently used worldwide, and the magnesium production scenario is changing rapidly, with Chinese production increasingly dominating the world market. For the purpose of this paper, a novel approach to Life Cycle Assessment was applied, in which Material Flow Accounting and energy-based methods (Embodied Energy, Exergy and Emergy Analyses) are integrated and complemented, with a detailed description of the environmental hazards associated with emissions from all the different processes.

Introduction In recent years - even months - the number of articles on computers has increased rapidly. One can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing a computer-related article. The article usually explains how the computer will change our lives. Many of us have some concern about the nature and type of change. For most of us, though, the problem is lack of information and understanding about how computers work. In other words, how do we make cost-effective decisions about computers? This three-part series will explain, simply, what a microcomputer is, how it works, and how to decide if you need one. This first article will define terms and briefly discuss areas where computerization might be economic. The second article will discuss geology and mining applications. The third article will discuss plant, administrative, and geotechnical areas as well as the future of software development in the minerals industry. Terms and Concepts All computers have input and output devices and a central processing unit (CPU). Information - instructions and data - is communicated to the computer by means of input devices. These instructions to the computer are converted into language that the computer understands. This causes the instructions to be carried out in the CPU. The result of these operations is translated back into language that we understand. This information is then sent to output devices such as printers and video display tubes. Traditionally, peripherals were devices separate from the main-frame (the CPU and memory) and were used to input, output, and store information or instructions. Today, peripherals perform the same functions though they may be housed in the same cabinet as the CPU and memory. Historically, peripherals included all input and output devices not part of the mainframe. Input devices include keyboards, magnetic tape, and card readers. Tapes and disks are input as well as output devices. Output devices are printers, CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes), and any mass storage device capable of storing data when directed to do so by the computer or the program. In fact, any mass storage device that can give the computer data when requested is an input device. Mass storage devices include floppy disks (thin, round sheets of plastic covered by metal particles), and hard disks. The latter are thicker and more densely coated with metal particles. This allows much more information to be stored. Another type of mass storage is magnetic tape. Its type and size varies widely. Processing and Storage Any computer understanding must include how instructions and data are processed and stored. Information is stored as a positive or a negative field known as a "bit." There are eight bits in a byte. The bits can be represented as either a one or a zero. Thus the code for a byte representing the numeral one is 00110001. The byte representing the letter A is 01000001. These codes are from the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). ASCII defines the standard set of characters including alpha, numeric, and special characters. The computer's memory has allocated locations where instructions as well as incoming information can be stored. All information and instructions are stored as binary numbers bit by bit - zeros and ones. The amount of data that can be stored is referred to as either thousands or millions of bits or bytes. The letter "K" is used to designate one thousand units. The letter "M" is used to mean one millon units (one meg). In mechanized tunnelling operations, performance, consumption and safety are main factors for jobsites. One of the most important components effecting these factors, especially in slurry TBM operations, are Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs). Inadequately dimensioned and designed STPs create bottlenecks for tunnelling operation and jeopardize time schedules and performance. Inefficiently planned STPs could drastically increase consumption figures such as electrical power, bentonite, water polymers, etc. Inaccurately selected and treated suspension properties can cause a high-risk potential for the whole project. This paper debates the relevant key parameters for STPs from start to finish of a project and its results in influencing factors from the manufacturer’s point of view.

The three thousand foot long 66-inch diameter Folsom East Interceptor Section2B was completed accident free, on time and under budget with no measurable surface settlement. The tunnel passed through nested cobbles, highly abrasive sands and gravels, and abandoned mine workings with less than five-feet of cover at times. Preventing settlement was critical since the tunnel passed under a heavily traveled state highway. A pilot project to test microtunneling and pipejacking methods in the same ground conditions abandoned both drives before completing the planned drive lengths. This paper discusses performance of the conventional tunneling method selected to excavate the ground and the effectiveness of the ground modification techniques employed.

Introduction Noranda, like similar businesses, is suffering the pain of previously unheard of currency relationships, a cost structure built in better days, and conditions of gross oversupply possible in almost any commodity. Indeed, it does seem like the worst of all possible worlds is out there before us. To understand a Canadian natural resource company, you must know how the country is organized. So far as natural resources are concerned, Canada is not Canada. Canada is 10 provinces and each own the resources situated therein. Thus, the conditions of extraction, exploitation, and operation are all set by the province, while the conditions of trade and currency are set by the Federal government. This means that what may be the rule in Newfoundland may not be the rule in Manitoba or British Columbia. The second thing is that the Canadian currency has been a satellite of the US dollar for a long time. This means that we hold the unenviable and unjustified position of being the country with the second strongest currency in the world. What this has meant to us is what it has meant to an American operator. Since 1980, a pound of copper fetches 214% more for a Chilean than it does for us and a pound of zinc 115% more for a Belgian. From an American point of view, Canada is favored because its dollar is valued at 25% to 30% less than the U.S. However, because of industrial indiscretions in years past, Canada has a locked in labor cost disadvantage that is very hard to cope with. Canada has a unique situation with its labor unions. Many of the unions are, or have been, internationals and therefore gained undue strength in early days. Canada has a third political party of socialist persuasion. It is entirely funded by dues from laor union members. Thus, we have a politicized workforce. And finally, we have a public service that has the right to strike. This had made the public service unions by far the strongest now in Canada. What this means to the mining industry is that there is somebody out there blazing the trail. The unrelenting power of these public service unions probably creates a climate more conducive to excessive wage settlements in industry than would otherwise be the case. Study, Work, and Pray So what do we do when times get tough? In simple terms, we study a lot, we work harder, and we pray a great deal. We study a lot in terms of learning hitherto unknown strengths and weaknesses of our products, processes, and operations. We work hard in the sense that we do everything possible to improve our productivity. And we pray a lot because, so far, anything else we have done has not been enough. Some years ago, Noranda recognized that its principal base and precious metal operations were diminishing. To provide for the future, we should branch out into other resource type operations. These might be countercyclical and also perhaps a little more permanent. For this reason, Noranda entered the potash, aluminum, and forest products businesses. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is committed to preserving and enhancing biodiversity in the areas in which we operate. As a member of the ICMM, FCX is committed to implement the 10 Sustainable Development (SD) Principles throughout our business. FCX is also a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a nonprofit coalition dedicated to protecting and enhancing wildl ife habitat. In alignment with ICMM SD Principle 7 and our Environmental Policy, FCX has set a performance goal to prepare a biodiversity inventory in 2010 and land management plan by end of 2011 for all active mining sites. In 2010 FCX established a Biodiversity Task Force to assist sites in biodiversity management; optimize use of resources around the globe; implement FCX goals and targets; and align biodiversity programs with ICMM principles and guidance. The task force consists of Environment and SD Department management, scientists and engineers from FCX sites, and WHC staff. The Task Force recently issued a biodiversity inventory guidance document to set expectations and provide consistency across the sites when developing a biodiversity inventory and land management plan.

Given the recent focus on powered haulage incidents within the U.S. mining sector, an appraisal of collision avoidance/warning systems (CXSs) through the lens of the research literature is timely. This paper aims to evaluate the maturity of CXS technology through the application of a technology readiness assessment (TRA) to research literature identified by systematic search methods. Results indicate that much of the evidence for CXS performance is at lower levels of maturity: that is, components and prototypes tested in a laboratory and in relevant environments. Less evidence exists for CXS performance at higher levels of maturity — that is, systems evaluated within operational environments — despite the existence of commercial products in the marketplace. This lack of evidence at higher maturity levels within the scientific literature highlights the need for more peer-reviewed research to evaluate CXS technologies. Additionally, results of the review reveal that most of the literature relevant to CXS technologies is focused on vehicle-to-vehicle interactions, which contrasts with haul truck fatal accident statistics that indicate most are due to vehicle-to-environment interactions, such as traveling through a berm. Lastly, the relatively small number and segmented nature of relevant studies suggest there is a need for more incremental research that would better facilitate the improvement of CXS technologies. This progression could be achieved through continued long-term interest and support for CXS technology research.

INTRODUCTION As the population increased along the coast route (California Route 1), and the people’s need to have guaranteed access increased, the landslides and related road closures began to have serious adverse economic impacts. Landslides were causing major long-term road closures about every 10 years on average. In 1983, ground movement at Devil’s Slide caused Highway 1 to be closed for an extended period of time which caused significant economic loss to the surrounding coastal communities. A number of options for bypassing the slide area were considered, and the Martini Creek inland bypass was selected for design. Subsequent litigation led to the creation of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Study in 1996. The results of this study indicated that a tunnel alternative would be competitive with the inland bypass. The final decision was left to the citizens of San Mateo County, who approved the tunnel alternative in the November, 1996 election After completion of environmental studies and the processing of legal challenges, the final environmental document was finished in 2001. The preferred tunnel alternative was designated to proceed for final design and construction. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnels consists of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction, which passes through twin tunnels and over twin bridges and then connects with the existing non-separated, two-lane road at each end.
