The Bureau of Mines designed a cell having four variable compartments in series to facilitate analysis of multicomponent mixtures. Use of the cell considerably decreases the time required for differential absorption analyses. A solution of a major component is placed in each compartment, and the light absorbed by each of these components is varied by increasing or decreasing the path length of the appropriate cell. Simple calculations then establish the amount of the component present. In analyzing unknown mixtures, compensation is made for compounds known to be present, and the differential spectrum representing components not accounted for is recorded and analyzed.

Mathematical modeling is a scientific exercise with the objective of developing simplified mathematical statements that relate to one another the same way as the processes that are being modeled. The utility value of the model is dependent on the ability of the model to closely approximate prototype behavior. Development of a perfect model, therefore, is an unrealistic objective because of the simpli¬fying assumptions made in building it. However, for a model to be acceptable for application, its operating characteristics or data generated from it should, within reasonable accuracy, duplicate proto¬performance. The validity and accuracy of a model depends on the mathematical constraints presupposed in model formulation. The final model must be tested for mathematical validity and for closeness of representation of the prototype. Mathematical validity, does not, however, imply that the model is accurate and correct but is prerequisite. Model testing and verification for the steady state model are given in Owili-Eger et al (1973). The unsteady state model has been tested for mathematical validity and found to be correct but has not yet been applied to a field condition for lack of data. However, in the application discussed below, the unsteady state model results are compared with pressure curves reported in literature and also with results from the steady state model. Coal seam characteristics and gas reservoir pressure used in this application are extracted from Kissell (1972). These characteristics are for the Pittsburgh seam, Federal No. 2 Mine, Fairview, West Virginia.

In the separation of a component from a mixture , two fractions are obtained , one containing a high - percentage composition of the component and the other a low - percentage composition . The high - percentage fraction is frequently called the concentrate and the low - percentage fraction the tailing . In many separation processes the recovery is not complete , and the composition of the concentrate decreases as the recovery of the component, which is concentrated , increases . It is this particular class of separations to which this paper is confined .

To be authorized for use in coal mines, explosives and blasting devices must pass certain safety tests prescribed in schedule 1F,3/ on the basis of extensive practical and theoretical research by the Explosives Testing Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines. An explosive or blasting device that passes these tests is placed on the active permissible list. As this list is constantly revised, it has been the practice of the Bureau of Mines periodically to publish the names of explosives and blasting devices that have been added to the active list, as well as those that have been transferred to the inactive list; changes in brand names also are reported. This circular covers all permissibles including additions, transfers, and changes made between December 31, 1945,4/ and December 31, 1951.

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. The Bell & Zoller Coal & Mining Co. recently completed construction of two slopes at Mine 3 near Zeigler , Ill . The slopes are in the Big Muddy River Valley , and construction was particularly difficult because the strata from the surface to a depth of 70 feet comprise water saturated sandy clay and sand . Many mining companies have similar shaft- and slope - sinking problems , and because these slopes were satisfactorily completed and now are in use the methods followed during construction are described in this information circular . It is believed that other companies with similar problems . will benefit by adopting the methods followed at Mine 3 .

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the surface charge of amphibole asbestos fibers and nonasbestiform cleavage fragments, as part of the Bureau's fundamental studies to provide new knowledge on the physical and chemical properties of the amphibole minerals. Microelectrophoresis was used to measure the electrophoretic mobilities, in water, of particles from six asbesti-from amphiboles and seven nonasbestiform amphiboles over the pH range of 5 through 9. The particles generally ranged in size from 2 to 5 µm wide by 10 to 30 µm long. The isoelectric point was determined for four of the minerals, and values were found to be between pH 3.5 and pH 5. The minerals studied had zeta potentials that generally ranged from -25 to -so mv in neutral solution. Attachment of colloidal positively charged AgI was also studied as a means of determining surface charge. Scanning electron microscopy of amphibole particles that had been in contact with aqueous AgI showed equal attachment of AgI to asbestos fibers and to cleavage fragments; the extent of AgI coating was the same for both. The electrophoretic mobilities of asbestos fibers were essentially the same as those of elongated cleavage fragments of the same aspect ratio (particle length divided by width). Blocky particles from both asbestiform and nonasbestiform specimens had lower mobilities.

This report describes laboratory studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the effectiveness of 10 additives to inhibit the self-heating of coal. Aqueous additive solutions were applied to a bituminous coal with a high spontaneous combustion potential, and the minimum self-heating temperatures (SHT's) of the dried coal-additive mixtures were determined in the Bureau's adiabatic heating oven. The relative effectiveness of the additives was determined by the observed changes in the minimum SHT's of the mixtures, or by the time required for the sample temperature to reach 150" C, compared with the untreated coal and a coal-water blank. Sodium nitrate, sodium chloride, and calcium carbonate were found to be the most effective inhibitors, followed by ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, calcium chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium acetate, and potassium chloride. Two additives, sodium formate and sodium phosphate, promoted the self-heating process. Differential scanning calorimetry experiments on the coal-additive mixtures showed that reactions occurred between the coal and some of the additives, but these reactions did not influence the self-heating process.

In an effort to decrease noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in coal preparation plant employees, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conduct­ing research to identify and control dominant noise sources in vibrating screen (VS) machines. To this end, acoustic measurements of the noise radiated by a dewatering VS were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) using microphone phased-array technology. These measurements allowed for the identification of the screen as the dominant source in the 250 Hz 1/3-octave band. The sidewalls are the major contributors in the 315 and 400 Hz bands, whereas the eccentric mechanisms and the electric motor are the dominant sources in the 800 and 1,000 Hz bands, respectively.

This paper reports the results of solution calorimetry conducted to obtain the heats of formation of crystalline FeS04?6.952H20 and FeS04?1.008H20, from. which values were derived for the stoichiometric compounds FeS04?H20 and FeS04?H20. Also included are derived values of the free energies of formation and dehydration. This work was undertaken primarily to fill a need for data for pure, easily obtainable ferrous compounds that are suitable for use as calorimetric intermediates, The ferrous sulfate hydrates meet the essential requirements for this use.

A very simple cold-bend test was devised and tested for evaluating thermoplastic jackets used on mine-power-feeder cables. A test sample is bent into a semi-circle whose radius is equal to the minimum bend radius recommended by IPCEA and then cooled to the, desired test temperature (-35°C). While at temperature, the sample is straightened by pulling the cable ends with a winch arrangement. The results show that of the jackets tested, those which cannot withstand the test literally burst when the sample is straightened.

The smelting of brass and bronze generates a dust composed primarily of zinc oxide, with lesser amounts of other metal oxides, such as copper, lead, and tin. The small quantity of this waste generated by individual smelters and the relatively low unit value of the contained metals, suggests the desirability of reclaiming the metals onsite or at some nearby point. The Bureau of Mines has developed a process that fits these requirements. The technique consists of (1) dissolving zinc and copper from the dust with sulfuric acid, (2) recovery of copper by cementation, (3) recovery of zinc as zinc sulfate crystals, and (4) recovery of lead and tin as a salable residue. Alternatively, zinc may be recovered by electrodeposition. Free acid is recycled and no major pollution problems are generated by the process.

Combustion energies of barium and strontium were measured by means of the combustion bomb calorimeter. The heats of formation obtained for the oxides were ?H298.15 = -139,060 ± 700 cal/mole of barium oxide (BaO) and ?H298.15 = -144,440 ± 400 cal/mole of strontium oxide (SrO). Tables containing heats and free energies of formation from 298.15° to 2,000° K were prepared.

Methane-drainage holes must be completely filled by grout before mining to prevent the emission of large quantities of gas during mine-through, which would constitute an explosion hazard. In November 1980, seven horizontal holes at the multipurpose borehole, a small-diameter shaft drilled as a Bureau of Mines coalbed methane-drainage installation on the property of the Federal No. 2 Mine, Monongalia County, WV, were plugged using a sodium silicate gel grout. This report de- scribes the grout mix and the use of the grout at the multipurpose borehole, and discusses the results observed upon mine-through of the holes in early 1981. Cost data for the sodium silicate grout are also presented.

This volume summarizes the contract work performed over a nine-month period by Westinghouse Electric Corporation on a Cost Plus Fixed Fee Contract for the Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines. The contract has been extended primarily to carry out improvements recommended for equipment produced under the contract for communicating with and locating trapped miners. These improvements will enhance the performance and utility of this equipment for operational use in actual mine emergencies. An additional complete set of the equipment will also he furnished to the Bureau under this extension. The work of the basic contract was to design, produce and test hardware in accordance with the Westinghouse response to a Bureau of Mines Request for Proposal which was based technically on recommendations of a study performed for the Bureau by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Evaluation of raw materials for mineral wool is one phase of the Bureau of Mines broad program for the more effective utilization: of our mineral resources. The experimental work and test-evaluation results on several raw materials as useful components for the production of mineral wool are presented in this report. Samples from all sections of the United States, including copper slag from Tacoma, Wash., pebble phosphate slime from Florida, and granites from Massachusetts and Minnesota, have been blown into mineral wool successfully in the laboratory tests. Maximum conservation of the Nation's mineral and manpower resources requires maximum utility of those resources. Al though the domestic reserves of oil, gas, and coal are tremendous, judicious use of these fuels through the use of proper insulation will insure the highest thermal efficiency. The effectiveness of mineral wool as a heat-insulating material has assumed an increasingly important role in the national economy, and it has become a fuel saver in countless applications. The most immediate concern to many is the use of mineral wool in the home, which promotes uniform temperature and minimizes drafts by reducing heat transfer through the walls, ceiling, and floors. There are, however, many industrial and commercial uses that require large volumes of mineral wool each year.

A semiquantitative test for the presence and identification of cesium and rubidium in rocks, clays, and mineral waters has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The test can be used in the field, as a guide for the prospector, geologist, or mining engineer engaged in location or development [w]ork. It comprises two simple spot tests of a solution prepared from the [m]ineral sample. Phosphomolybdic acid, added to a drop of the test solution, [d]etects cesium, rubidium, and potassium in quantities as low as 60 parts per [m]illion. Silicomolybdic acid, added to a second drop of test solution, enables the operator to distinguish between cesium and/or rubidium and potassium. Test procedures, equipment requirements, and limitations of the method are described in this report. Cesium and rubidium were discovered in 1860 and 1861 by Bunsen and Kirchhoff with a spectroscope. The elements usually occur together, particularly in granite and granitic pegmatites. Rubidium does not occur as an essential constituent of any known mineral, yet it is found as a minor element in so many minerals that rubidium is 16th in abundance in the earth's crust. Cesium, which ranks as the 37th most abundant element, is the principal component of pollucite and a minor element in a wide variety of minerals.

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings, and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.
