Never before have mine managers in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania been so seriously concerned about the rising cost of pumping mine water. Many of them know that future pumping charges may affect their operating profits adversely to an extent that will make it necessary to abandon some mines. Increased pumping charges in the anthracite industry are currently comparable in importance with higher mining costs; in fact, profitable operation of some mines depends not only upon the cost of mining coal but also upon whether they can be kept free from water at reasonable cost. Pumping charges are relatively low during the early development of a mine, but they increase rapidly as development progresses. Numerous crop falls, strippings, and. abandoned adjacent properties contribute unfavorably to the volume of water produced during mining. The foregoing conditions and the existence of large underground pools below existing mining levels present water problems of such magnitude and cost that some mine owners cannot continue to operate profitably.

In this investigation, the ampoule type of carbon-monoxide (CO) detector which is manufactured under license of U. S. Patent 1,644,014 (October 4, 1927) was tested for sensitivity and reliability. This detector was devised primarily for examining the air of manholes and sewers for possible dangerous contamination with CO before workman enter those places, but dine to the simplicity of the device it may have a more general usage for examination of atmospheres which are known or suspected to be contaminated with CO. Some of the suggested uses are the examination of the air in garages, tunnels, mines, around blast furnaces, gas plants, and in the home.

In this report, a description of mine practices, the preparation of roof bolts for laboratory experiments, the results of tensile-strength determinations, and a discussion of results of these tests are presented. Certain restrictions are recommended for roof bolts subjected to repeated bending, and two methods of complying with these limitations imposed by the restrictions are presented. The practice of bending steel roof bolts for installation in areas where the height of the opening was less than the length of the bolts required to support the immediate roof adequately has been adopted recently in several coal mines in lieu of sectional rods designed for that purpose. In addition, a few of these same mines have been reclaiming the bent rods and reusing them numerous times. The purpose of this study was to determine if these practices decreased the strength of such bolts and thus jeopardized the safety of the men working in these mines.

This Bureau of Mines report tabulates data on nitrogen-gas reservoirs and isolated occurrences of inert gases in several Williston basin oilfields. Recoverable reserves of nitrogen gas in the Minnelusa nitrogen interval within the areas of five oilfields on the Nesson anticline in North Dakota are estimated at about 1.27 trillion standard cubic feet, based on computer analyses of logs from over 300 wells. This volume of nitrogen represents a large source of high-pressure inert gas and warrants consideration of possible application in oil-production operations. Drill-stem tests made in two of the fields indicated that nitrogen can be produced at rates up to 28 million cubic feet per day.

The suitability of fluid petroleum coke as a blending agent for producing metallurgical coke has been investigated using the Tuscaloosa and sole-heated experimental ovens. From the results of tests with three representative blends, it has been fond that additions of fluid petroleum coke effect the following changes: (1) Increase in size, resistance to shatter, and apparent specific gravity of cokes produced; (2) little or no change in coke hardness and stability or in the amount of breeze formed; (3) increased charge density; (4) modification of expansion characteristics of blends charged; and (5) decreased ash and increased sulfur contents of blends charged and cokes produced. Substitution of a calcined sample of fluid coke of greatly reduced sulfur content resulted in a coke of inferior physical properties. This effect indicates that additions of the calcined product should probably be limited and that other methods for producing a low sulfur fluid coke should be considered.

At its College Park Metallurgy Research Center in Maryland, the Bureau of Mines has installed and is operating a 5-ton-per-hour pilot plant for continuous mechanical separation of values contained in raw urban refuse. The entire sys tern was assembled using commercially available equipment. The process relies on multistage processing including shredding, air classification, screening, gravity concentration, and electrostatic separation. Compactor trucks deliver raw refuse collected along typical routes in metropolitan Washington, D.C., to the pilot plant. The loads are separated into concentrates of (1) light-gage iron, (2) massive metals, (3) glass, (4) putrescibles and waste combustibles, (5) paper, and (6) plastics. While some refinements remain to be made in the processing system flow-sheet, the data obtained to date have been highly encouraging, indicating favorable economics for commercial-size plants.

An apparatus and procedure have been developed for testing the anchorage effectiveness of slotted-type bolts. The apparatus consists of: (1) A hydrualic Jack assembly for loading the bolt and (2) a device (extensometer or cathetometer) for measuring displacement of the bolt as it is loaded. This apparatus and procedure permit measurment of anchor slip for loads up to the yield load of the bolt. Two representative makes of slotted-type bolts (a total of 94 bolts) were tested in typical sandstone and shale mine roof. Analysis of the test results showed that (1) anchorage capacities up to the yield load of the bolts can be developed in either rock type; (2) the shape of the slotted end of the bolt affects the ease with which the bolt can be driven; (3) all bolts for which the driving distance was more than 1.25 inches produced satisfactory anchorage in both rock types (thus, driving distance can be used as a criterion for satisfactory anchorage); (4) for the group of bolts that was satisfactorily anchored the anchor slip was unaffected by the type of bolt but was considerably larger in shale than in sandstone; and (5) the bolt expansion, that is, the amount the wedge expands the prongs in excess of the diameter of the hole, can also be employed as a criterion for satisfactory anchorage. Although the bolt-expansion and driving-distance results do not differ appreciably, the latter is recommended because it is easier to determine.

"INTRODUCTION Experience and research have shown that an effective way to reduce structural damage from explosions is to provide adequate pressure-relief vents in the walls of equipment and buildings within which explosions might occur. In general, free or unrestricted openings represent the most efficient type of vent. However, in many manufacturing operations it is impractical to use free vents, and it becomes necessary to cover the openings with diaphragms or blow-out disks, hinged panels, or other devices, in order to give protection against weather changes, to prevent the efflux of dusts or vapors from equipment during normal operations, or for other reasons.A few data on the pressure-relieving capacities of hinged panels and a paper diaphragm were published in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3924,4/ which covered the first phase of the dust-explosion venting study made by the Bureau. The present report describes recent experiments that were made to determine the relative effectiveness of an unrestricted vent and 22 types of closures, including various paper, cloth, and metal-foil diaphragms, hinged doors or panels, and several kinds of scored and unscored glass panes.The tests showed that many of the vent closures were effective in releasing the explosions rapidly during their incipient stage, so that the development of destructive pressures was prevented. Vents of this type should prove useful in safeguarding industrial equipment from severe explosion damage. The experiments disclosed that the venting capacities of the diaphragms are approximately inversely proportional to their static bursting strengths."

The Bureau of Mines studied the effect of varying the, diameter of explosive charges on the generation and propagation of strain waves. The parameters compared were strain amplitude, impulse, energy, and pulse shape. Three different explosives were detonated in three different charge diameters. Charges of cast 50/50 pentolite-detonated at the same velocity in 5-, 2.5-, and 1.5-inch diameters. Charges of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil prills and 45-percent semigelatin dynamite showed a strong detonation rate-diameter dependency. Detonation of these two explosives was considered nonideal. Differences in the diameter of the charge caused less difference in the strain-generating abilities of pentolite than in those of the other two explosives. This was also true for impulse and energy. Rise and fall times of the strain pulses for all three explosives were proportional to detonation time and cavity volume, respectively.

Laboratory data obtained from a Bureau of Mines rotary air core of a well near Sugar Grove , Warren County , Pa . , were instrumental in initiating hydraulic fracturing in the area to stimulate oil recovery from Glade sand oil reservoirs . This report outlines the general geology , lease development , reservoir- rock characteristics , and oil - production history of Glade and Clarendon sand reservoirs in Warren County . The methods of well completion for single- stage and multiple- stage hydraulic fracturing of old and new wells are discussed , and a range of hydraulic fracture treatment data from 29 Glade sand and 10 Clarendon sand wells is presented . A composite decline curve representing oil - production data from six wells shows probable results of hydraulic fracturing . Average cumulative oil production during the first 100 days after hydraulic fracturing with a sand - carrying liquid is compared with production after conventional shooting with liquid nitroglycerin .

Three electrorefining cells were designed to investigate various factors associated with the electrorefining of reject - grade titanium sponge . Operation of the cells provided information on cell design as well as on how design and operating variables affected the quality of the titanium product . A sodium chloride - titanium chloride electrolyte was used , and the electrolyte chambers had capacities ranging from 400 to 3,500 pounds of molten salt . Major factors investigated were electrolyte composition , temperature and useful life , effect of various cathode shapes and materials of construction , methods for removing cathode deposits , effect of current density and cell potential , and the mechanics of deposit growth and crystal morphology . One of the cells was in intermittent operation over a 4 - year period and produced 2 tons of refined titanium . A product with a hardness of 80 or less Bhn (Brinell hardness number ) was consistently and easily obtained . Some metal with a hardness of less than 60 Bhn was produced . In one of the cells in which the electrolyte was held at operating temperature with an internal heater an ac input of 25 kw maintained 3,500 pounds of electrolyte at 850 ° C , but with an external heater 35 kw was required to maintain 400 pounds at 850° C.

Crude oils are capable of dissolving quantities of gas under pressure. This fact has been known for some time, but questions have arisen as to the effects of gas in solution upon the characteristics of the oil. Previous investigations4 show that gas in solution in an oil affects the viscosity and surface tension of the oil, but the effect's on the volume and A. P. I. gravity of the oil have not been known. The results given in this report show that there is a decided change both in volume and in the A. P. I. gravity of the oil due to the solution of the gas in the oil under pressure. As gas is dissolved, the volume of the oil and the A. P. I. gravity increase. The converse of this phenomenon is also true: if the gas is released from a saturated oil, there is a shrinkage in volume and a decrease in A.P.I. gravity due to the release of gas from solution. However, various oils show marked tendencies to retain a portion of the dissolved gas upon releasing the pressure to that of the atmosphere. This retained gas has an appreciable effect on the volume and A. P. I. gravity of the oil because the oil does not resume its initial volume or gravity while it retains dissolved gas. In a sense the oil has been "Freshened" and will not return to its original or weathered volume until it loses some of the lighter fractions. Wiggins5 has shown that a fresh oil decreases both in volume and in gravity because of the weathering of the lighter fractions while the oil is standing in storage tanks.

To furnish the information frequently requested by producers and suppliers as to the fuel requirements of the Federal Government , the Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the consuming departments and establishments , has collected the data herein , showing the Government's fuel consumption during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1930. The following tables show the quantities and kinds of fuels consumed by the Federal Government in each of its departments and their principal branches , in each State , and in Alaska , Hawaii , Panama Canal Zone , Porto Rico , and the Virgin Islands . The separate departments and establishments were asked to supply information for each Federal building or other plant and , as to vessel fuel , the amount loaded at each port of supply . Fuels consumed in internal combustion engines are not included . The report does not include fuels used by Post Offices of the fourth class , since their fuels are not purchased by the Federal Government but are covered by an allowance in each case for light and heat . In some cases the data supplied represent receipts , which are approximately equivalent to consumption . The present study is believed to be the first effort to bring together the data representing the Government's requirements for the various fuels which it consumes . Figures showing the coal consumed by the Federal Government were gathered for the year 1922. These data are shown in an article by O. P. Hood and R. H. Kudlich of the Bureau of Mines , contributed as a chapter to " Industrial Coal ; Purchase , Delivery and Storage , " published by the American Engineering Council . The figures of coal consumption presented herewith are approximately comparable with those published for 1922 , a relatively small difference being due to the fact that the 1922 figures include the Philippine Islands and all other territory in which any coal was consumed by the Government . At the present time , the only data on Government fuel consumption that are published regularly are those compiled by E. B. Swanson , chief economist of the petroleum economics division of the Bureau of Mines . These are published annually by the Bureau of Mines in " Sources and Distribution of Major Petroleum Products , Atlantic Coast States , " and by the bureau in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute in the annual " National Survey of Fuel Oil Distribution . " It is believed that the data herewith will prove of interest and value to the fuel industries as well as to Government consumers and that it will also afford a basis for measuring future trends in the use of the various fuels by the Federal Government . Figures showing the quantities of the various kinds of fuels consumed by each of the executive departments and independent establishments , are given in Table 1. In addition to developing various types of coal-interface detection system, the US Bureau of Miner is actively in involved in developing a coal rib-thickness monitoring system for highwall mining applications. One particular system that shows promise in a ground-pentetrating radar system to detect the coal-air boundaries of coal rifts. Based on preliminary laboratory and field tests results indicate that this method can be applied successfully in highwall mines to maintain constant rib thickness. The coal seam should be relatively clean in the vicinity of the antenna (e.g., have minimal partings or dirt bands) for best results.

The effective coefficient for rate of reduction of a sample of granular iron ore may be determined by passing the reducing gas through a bed of the are at constant flow rate and periodically analyzing the effluent gas, The method of analyzing the data is based on a mathematical model that takes into account the variation in composition of the gas and solids with time and position in the bed. A method is described for determining the value of the rate coefficient that gives best agreement between the observed and calculated analyses of the effluent gas.
