The Bureau of Mines performed drill calibration tests on two industrial percussive drills of 2-5/8- and 3-1/2-inch piston diameters to determine operating characteristics for their use in conjunction with penetration rate data in developing drillability equations and furthering the knowledge of percussive drills. The use of a linear velocity transducer for measuring piston velocities and application of its instrumentation are described. Data presented include relationships between maximum piston velocity and feed air pressure other results confirm the theory or data of previous investigators, and some comparisons are made with the performance prediction formulas of other investigators.

Plastometric tests were made to determine the maximum thickness of the plastic layer for different U.S. coals . The effect of test variables on the maximum thickness of the plastic layer was studied . The values for the maximum thickness of the plastic layer were found to be related to the Gieseler maximum fluidity , plastic temperature range , free swelling index , and other plastic properties of coals . Only a general relationship was observed between the plastometric parameters obtained in these tests and the coking properties of coal .

"INTRODUCTION The Good Fortune mine was sampled by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in June 1944. Project 984 was set up under the strategic minerals program to make old workings accessible for this sampling program. Actual operations commenced June 1, 1944, and were completed June 30, 1944.The deposit was visited and discussed briefly by Sidney H. Ball 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in the summer of 1906 and by H. M. Chance 4/ several times from 1887 to 1900.LOCATION AND ACCESSIBILITYThe Good Fortune mine is situated in the Hartville mining district in Platte County, Wyo., approximately 9 miles northwest of the town of Guernsey. The property is about 100 miles north of Cheyenne, Wyo. (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Manganiferous breccia formations on three properties were prospected by the Bureau of Mines from January to November 1954 in Johnson County, Tenn. The prospecting consisted of diamond drilling, trenching, shaft sinking, and crosscutting. The results of the exploratory work show the manganiferous material to be low-grade, with little vertical extension. The manuscript on this report was completed February 1955. LOCATION The prospects are in Johnson County, Tenn. (fig. 1), within a radius of 12 miles from Mountain City. The nearest railroad terminal is Damascus, Va., 14 miles from Mountain City.

The number of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased during 1948 from 390 to 375, continuing the trend to fewer units of larger individual capacity that has persisted since the peak in number of plants was recorded on January 1 , 1936. Large - scale construction of new processing facilities continued through 1948 with a resultant gain in daily crude-oil throughput capacity of installed equipment from 6,034,252 barrels on January 1 , 1948 to 6,438,995 barrels on January 1 , 1949. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil therefore increased during 1948 from 15,472 barrels daily to 17,171 . The principal areas of expansion of facilities were the strategic seaboard districts of the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and the East Coast , and the important Indiana , Illinois , Kentucky, etc. , district that supplies markets in the upper Middle West region . These four districts accounted for 79 percent of the total new capacity added in the United States in 1948. The relatively small petroleum- refining industry of the Other Rocky Mountain district experienced a vigorous expansion in 1948 that will continue during 1949 . Capacity building on January 1, 1949 , amounting to 341,500 barrels daily, was 25,750 barrels lower than the comparable total on January 1 , 1948, but was the second highest on record . New construction was heavily concentrated in the Texas Gulf, East Coast , and Indiana -Illinois

The mmber of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased during 1949 from 375 to 367 while the total crude-oil charging capacity of refineries continued to increase. A gain in the through-put capacity of 257,305 barrels daily raised the total to a new high level 6,696,300 as of January 1, 1950. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude-oil increased during 1949 from 17,171 barrels daily to 18,246. The four coastal refinery districts accounted for 178,900 barrels or 70 percent of the total capacity increase and the Illinois-Indiana- Kentucky district 57,950 barrels, or 23 percent. Slight declines in capacity were reported in the Texas Inland and the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland districts. The capacity building on January 1, 1950, 145,600 barrels daily, was less than half the amount under construction a year earlier. Most of the new construction involved enlargement of existing refineries and was confined to the East Coast and Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky districts. Two new refineries, however, were under construction, one in Oklahoma and the other in Texas. The shut-down capacity increased for the first time since 1946, and the 473,302 barrels daily reported on January 1, 1950, was the largest recorded since January 1, 1938. The only refining district showing a decline in the shut-down capacity was the Appalachian No. 2 district. The largest increases were reported in the Texas Gulf, Indiana-Illinois- Kentucky, California, and East Coast districts. The operating ratio of the petroleum refining industry, as indicated by dividing the January 1950 runs to stills of 5,483,000 barrels daily by the total installed capacity January 1, 1950, was 81.9 percent, compared with a ratio of 87.8 percent at the beginning of 1949.

Towards the goal of achieving uniform-high-tensions in roofbolts to provide superior roof support[1-7] for extended periods, Terra Tek installed mechanical-anchor bolts in a mine in eight different ways -- under torque/thrust control with and without hardened washers, belleville washers and tension equalization; in a conventional manner with and without a hardened washer. The various bolt groups were analyzed in terms of their tension uniformity and mean tension levels. Installing the bolts accurately with ? a hardened washer under the bolthead, and ? proper torque/thrust control resulted in the mast uniformly tensioned bolts -- with a coefficient of variation of only 14%, an improvement of 3 times over a conventional installation. Also, these bolts maintained a high tension level -- 80% of the installation tension, compared to 50% achieved conventionally.

"The size of off-highway trucks has increased substantially over the last decade, bringing about a radical change in truck maintenance practices and procedures. As a result, surface mine maintenance mechanics today are faced with the increased hazards of working with larger and heavier tools and components and doing repairs at greater heights, thereby exposing them to a high potential for serious injury or death. Not surprisingly, the number of accidents involving truck maintenance mechanics is significantly increasing.The Bureau of Mines has assessed the haulage truck maintenance safety problem, analyzing maintenance-accident data over the 7-yr period, 1978- 84, in terms of personnel, job activities, truck components and systems, tools involved, and truck design. This assessment, based on the review and interpretation of 1,225 haulage truck maintenance accident reports, identified major factors contributing to these accidents. Overall, young, inexperienced workers are involved in most accidents. A typical maintenance accident involves a male mechanic under 33 yr old, with less than 5 yr job experience. INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, surface mine maintenance and repair operations have changed radically. The number of maintenance personnel has grown along with the hazards of working with larger and heavier components at greater heights and with larger and heavier tools. Furthermore, transfer of skills from over-the-road vehicle mechanics is not as feasible as it once was, because of the ever increasing size of mining equipment and the complexity of its design. In short, surf ace mine equipment maintenance and repair has become increasingly sophisticated as well as labor intensive, necessitating further research and evaluation in terms of both safety and efficiency (1, 7-8) 2"

Coal analyses help to describe the character of coal as it lies in the ground of as it may he delivered to the user Analyses of samples of coal collected from the face of the bed in mines are plentiful, but available analyses of delivered coal are relatively few, and there is a distinct difference between "mine samples" and "delivered samples.” Mine samples are collected actor drag to a standard method. 13 The sampler cuts a channel. 2 by 6 or 3 by 4 inches from roof to, floor in the face of the bed, and excludes from the sample all partings more than 3/8 inch thick, and any lenses or concretions of sulphur or other impurities more than 2 inches in maximum diameter and 2 inch thick. The Rush & Brown mine has been one of the most consistent small producers of copper ore in the history of Alaskan mining. Approximately 50,000 tons of ore have been shipped to smelters from the property. Production has been made from two distinct and separate ore bodies of dissimilar types. The Shear Vein deposit has been mined to a depth of 500 feet below the surface without a reduction in the size of the ore shoot or the grade of ore. The Magnetite ore body has been partly mined to a depth of 200 feet below the surface. Because of the favorable production record of the Rush & Brown mine, the present need for copper and the fact that the owners were attempting to place the mine in production, it was deemed advisable to investigate this property under the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939 as a possible source of copper.

Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced ; although it is well -known that there are large deposits of low - grade ore in the United States , the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore is depleted through inability to obtain adequate supplies from foreign sources . Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot - plant investigations designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines . This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program . The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series , Report of Investigations 3606 , Manganese Investigations 1. "The Bureau of Mines exploratory work on the Bear Lodge, Wyo., fluorite property wider the strategic minerals Program was completed in November 1944. Exploration consisted of surface trenching, shaft sinking, and drifting at shallow depth. Doak C. Cox of the Federal Geological Survey visited the area during the latter part of 1944 and napped the Bear Lodge property.The Bear Lodge property is situated in the Black Hilts National Forest in eastern Crook County, Wyo., 6 miles north of the community of Sundance (fig. 1). Sundance is 29 miles northwest of Upton, Wyo., a station on the Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy Railroad and 43 miles southwest of a siding on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, 3 miles south of Belle Fourche, S. Dak. U. S. Highway 14 passes through Sundance in an east-west direction. Sundance may be reached from the south over U. S. Highway 85 and Wyoming State Highway 585.The Bear Lodge property i a situated in the Boer Lodge Mountains in secs. 15, 22, and 23, T. 52 N., R. 63W., 6th P.M.The topography in the vicinity of the fluorite deposits consists essentially of rounded hills which slope gently to the valley floors. Near the north end of the Property the terrain steepens locally, and the canyon walls are Precipitous along the courses of several streams. There is an adequate supply of water and native timber for mining purposes. The average elevation near the deposits is 5,700 feet.The climate of the region is relatively moderate. The summers are usually warm, with frequent rainstorms. Temperatures often fall below zero during the winter months. Snowfalls are moderate to heavy.Fluorite occurrences in the Bear Lodge area have been known since 1914; however, fluorite was not discovered on the Bear Lodge property until 1943, when prospectors working on a nearby manganese deposit found fluorite mineralization in the limestone. No production has been recorded from the property."

Briefly, a permissible schedule of the Bureau of Mines establishes certain minimum standards for safety; it gives details of test methods adopted to determine whether these standards have been met, and a list of charges for such tests. Any manufacturer has the privilege of submitting his product for test in accordance with the conditions outlined in the schedules. His action is wholly voluntary, for the Federal Government has no jurisdiction as to what equipment shall be used in mines, this authority being left to the various States. When the product of a manufacturer has met the schedule requirements, he is permit¬ted to advertise this fact and to attach an approval plate with the bureau's seal to each machine he makes that is identical in every way with the equipment tested, inspected, and approved by the bureau. This work of approval has grown by the addition of new schedules until at present a great many mines are using one or more classes of permissible equipment, and there is still a demand for other approved apparatus in the ever-widening field of electrically operated machinery. The safety of electrical equipment of this type depends on four fundamentals, namely, (1) correct principles of design; (2) proper assembly of parts at the factory; (3) proper assembly and installation of equipment at the mine; (4) and proper operation and maintenance after installation. The first two factors are within the province of the manufacturer. The bureau either inspects and tests several models of one product, such as electric cap lamps, or one model, such as an electric motor. If this series of tests proves satisfactory, the manufacturer is given the privilege of making other appliances, and assembling them in the same way; the approval plate he attaches is his guaranty that the equipment is identical with the one tested and inspected by the bureau. The United States is richly endowed with mineral resources. However, mineral recovery by its very nature, involves a destructive process, Figures 1 and 2. In the past, mining practices were all too often conducted with the purpose of removing minerals by the simplest and cheapest method possible, without plans for the preservation of land, water, and air, and with too little consideration for the rights of others. A mining company is in business to make a profit, but every company, regardless of the nature of its business, has moral obligations to reduce its undesirable effects on the environment and to safeguard the rights of others. The problem of environmental degradation caused by surface mining is widespread and serious. Minerals in some form occur in each of the 50 States and several States are extensively mined. Data on the acreage disturbed in the United States, by commodity and State are presented in Table 1. Thirty-one States have laws regulating surface mining, (Table 2). Briefly reviewed in Appendix A-1 are the basic provisions of State laws governing surface mining. It can be seen that these laws vary considerably from State to State owing largely to the mining conditions within that State. Of the 24 coal-producing States, only three (Alaska, Arizona, and Utah) do not regulate strip mining. Even the states that are often cited as models of comprehensive regulations still have problems minimizing environmental damages. Uncontrolled surface mining presents a situation as critical to the well-being of the society as any it has ever faced. Many mining activities have imposed huge social costs on the public at large. These costs are long-range and are in the form of stream pollution, floods, landslides, loss of fish and wildlife habitats, unreclaimed land, erosion, and the impairment of natural beauty. In a 1965 Department of Interior study,(1)it was estimated that of the 25,000 miles (1+0,225 kilometers) of contour bench in Appalachia, approximately 1,700 miles (2735 kilometers) are affected by massive landslides. Additionally, 1+800 miles (7723 kilometers) of streams and 29,000 surface acres (11,716 hectares) of impoundments and reservoirs have been seriously affected by coal strip mining operations in the United States.

In the early nineties it was observed by several European investigators and by C. S. Rice4 that an explosion could be checked and would not propagate in the parts of a mine where shale or other inert dust was present in large amounts.5 After the disastrous Courrieres explosion in France that killed 1,100 men, coal-dust explosion tests were made in France in 1907 and in Great Britain in 1908 which resulted in the conclusion that if enough incombustible dust were properly spread throughout passageways charged with coal-dust, the propagation of an explosion by the coal-dust could be prevented. In 1908 the Federal government authorized the investigation of the causes of mine explosions and of possible methods of preventing them, with the result that during 1911 the United States Bureau of Mines, after making several tests, suggested that rock-dust be used in gassy or dusty bituminous coal mines. Since that time, experiments and investigations6 have proved conclusively that widespread explosions can be prevented in coal mines by efficient rook-dusting.

Carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of Butler County, Pa., are described in this report by the Bureau of Mines. Eight samples, representing the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Lower Kittanning, Clarion, and Brookville beds, were carbonized at 900° C. by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method. Butler County coals rank as high-volatile A bituminous and are generally characterized by high sulfur content compared with Appalachian coals used for industrial coking. If cleaned, the Brookville and one sample of Upper Freeport coal would be acceptable as the major component of metallurgical coking blends. The other Butler County coals tested would be unsuitable for this purpose because of either excessive sulfur or poor coking properties.

The Union Copper mine is in the Gold Hill district; Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, N. C. The mine was discovered in 1799 and first worked as a gold mine; but copper was encountered at depth, and the property became an important producer of copper. It is estimated that the mine produced 5,000,000 pounds of copper before operations were discontinued in 1907. As part of the strategic minerals program, the Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from July 1943 to November 1943. Eight diamond-drill holes totaling 2,500 linear feet were drilled to delineate the ore body. Analyses 205 core samples were made. Tabulations of sample analyses and drill-hole logs are presented in this report.

As part of a project to develop refractory metal alloys suitable for high-temperature structural applications, the Bureau of Mines applied solid solution and precipitation-hardening techniques to columbium and tantalum alloys. Thirty-three alloys were evaluated to determine their formability, strength, and oxidation resistance. Three alloys had tensile strengths near 40,000 psi at 1,200° C: Cb-1N-5W-5V-10Hf (No.4), Cb-15Hf-5W-0.5B (No. 31), and Cb-15Hf-SW-IB (No. 32). Oxidation resistance of the high-strength alloys was good. Alloy4 gained only 34 mg/cm2 at 1,200° C, and 21 mg/cm2 at 1,000° C in 2 hours. Hot forming was done without any protection from oxidation.

The Sheep Creek iron deposits, Meagher County, Mont., were investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1943 and 1944. Work undertaken included exploratory trenching, churn drilling, petrographic studies, and detailed beneficiation tests. It was determined that the Sheep Creek ores occur both as fissure filling and bedding replacements in thin-bedded shale and arenaceous limestones of the Algonkian Belt series. At least five stratigraphic horizons were found to be mineralized. Metallurgical studies indicate that the ores are not amenable to beneficiation by present-day low-cost methods. Details of geology, sampling, and beneficiation tests are presented in this report.
