High-quality sheet of electrowon molybdenum was attained by a sequence of procedure on pressed and arc-melted crystalline powders. The procedures included high-temperature, high-vacuum sintering treatments and the use of metal deoxidizers instead of carbon to improve the mechanical properties of the molybdenum sheet. Rolled sheet 60 mils thick was evaluated by tensile and bend tests, hardness measurements, microstructures, and recrystallization treatments. After stress relieving, yield strength ranged from 85,000 to 110,500 psi (0.2- percent offset) and ultimate strength ranged from 87,200 to 117,250 psi with 4.5- to 25-percent elongation observed for arc-melted sheet, and 5.0- to 23- percent elongation observed for powder metallurgy sheet. In room temperature bend tests the sheet yielded plastically, indicating that the ductile-brittle transition point was below room temperature. The diamond pyramid hardness (DPH) of the molybdenum sheet changed from 214 to 293 DPH for the stress-relieved condition to 177 to 185 DPH for the fully recrystallized condition. The brittleness of recrystallized molybdenum, reported by other investigators as characteristic of sheet prepared from commercial-grade hydrogen-reduced powders, was not in evidence. Recrystallized tensile specimens pulled at room temperature had an average elongation of 31 percent.

This work was conducted to determine the feasibility of producing aluminum-silicon alloys in a pit-type, three-phase electric-arc furnace. Two carbon-lined furnaces were used in the tests. The power input ranged from 120 to 240 kw. in the small furnace and from 420 to 460 kw. in the large furnace. Energy consumption ranged from 5.3 to 11.5 kw.-hr. per pound of alloy produced and electrode consumption, from 240 to 510 pounds per ton of alloy produced. A wide range of crude aluminum-silicon alloys was produced by direct smelting of clays or similar aluminum silicate raw materials, using hogged fuel or wood chips as the major source of carbon in the furnace charge, and silicon of high grade was produced by smelting quartz. The aluminum content of the aluminum-silicon alloys ranged from 15 to 55 percent. Alloys produced from a white opaline-silicate clay were relatively free of iron, titanium, and other impurities. Those produced from western fire clays and kyanite, although richer in aluminum, contained considerable amounts of impurities. The purity of the alloys depended largely on the composition of the raw materials.

"It has been known for some time that sizes of aqueous particles may be affected by flow-induced relative humidity (RH) changes. The RH of air flowing through an impactor decreases as a result of pressure drop through the impactor and increases because of aerodynamic cooling within the high-speed jets, as illustrated in Figure 1. Because the sizes of aqueous particles depend on RH, the impaction stage on which such particles are collected may be different from the stage where they ought to be col¬lected, based on the particle size at the sampler inlet.Fuchs (1980) reviewed literature on water vapor condensation in impactors. The reviewed impactors operated at jet velocities of 100-250 m/s. Particle size increases ow¬ing to water vapor condensation were found in all cases. In one case (Khorguani et al., 1970), it was found that very small droplets (Dp <_ 0.02 um) containing sodium chloride and silver iodide were collected in an impactor with a cut point of 0.32 µm and a jet velocity of 100 m/s. Fuchs believed that such particles could not be captured in an impactor without having been enlarged by condensation. Winkler (1974) sampled at¬mospheric dust with a rectangular nozzle impactor that had a nozzle cross section of 0.3 x 15 mm, a cut size of 0.4 um, and an average jet velocity of 100 m/s. No adhesive was used on the impaction plate. The collection efficiency increased as air humidity was increased from 20% to 100%. The effect was especially noticeable in the increased collection efficiency for hygroscopic particles, and was attributed to condensation.Extensive theoretical and experimental research work on the distortion of the particle size distributions in impactors was done by Biswas and coworkers (1985, 1987). The impactors employed in the study were a low-pressure impactor with high jet velocity stages (Hering et al., 1978, 1979) and a conventional six-stage impactor, Sierra's model 226, operated in the incompressible regime. Ammonium sulfate aerosols were chosen for the study. In the low-pressure impactor, an orifice operating at a Mach number of 1 causes a sudden pressure drop, significantly reducing the RH in the next two stages (stages 5 and 6). This results in a 0.15-um diameter ammonium sulfate droplet shrinking to about 0.07 um at stage 5 when the inlet RH is 95%. In stage 7, the tempera¬ture drop is considerable because the jet speed is sonic. For an inlet RH of 95%, a 0.03 um droplet grows to about 0.06 um. However, the same size droplet at an inlet RH of 25% grows to only 0.04 um. For the Sierra model 226 cascade impactor that is operated with a Mach number of 0.27 at the last stage (stage VI), it was found that for an inlet RH of about 67%, particle growth would occur in stage VI. At 80% RH, both stages V and VI were affected. Biswas et al. (1987) stated that Mach number alone does not determine the size biasing; the type of aerosol, the inlet conditions, the temperature and pressure ratio, and the impactor geometry (throat length, jet-to-plate distance, etc.) must be considered for each stage in evaluating the distortion of the particle size distribution."

The effect of low percentages of methane (0 to 5 pet.) in an air atmosphere on spark initiated explosions of coal dust was investigated. With low dust concentrations (0.1 to 0.4 oz./cu, ft.), small amounts of methane increase the explosion pressure; with larger dust concentrations (0.5 to 2.0 oz./cu. ft.), small amounts of methane decrease the explosion pressure. The rate of pressure rise of a coal dust explosion increases with increase in methane concentration; about 3 to 4 pct. further addition of methane yields a decrease in the rate of pressure rise. Convection currents created by the air or gas blast used to disperse dust produce an increase in explosion pressure and rate of pressure rise. The minimum explosive concentration of the coal dust decreases about linearly as the concentration of methane increases from 0 to 5 pct. The explosion pressure increases linearly as the initial pressure within the chamber increases. Similarities between coal dust and methane explosions are indicated, INTRODUCTION During coal mining, methane occluded in coal or adjoining strata is liberated into the mine atmosphere,4 Normally, the methane is diluted and swept away by the ventilating air. Under some conditions, through accidental disruption of the ventilation system, sudden outburst, or because insufficient fresh air is supplied to a working place, low percentages of methane may be present during mining operations. If it is permitted to accumulate, methane itself presents an explosion hazard; its limits of explosibility arc approximately 5 and 15 pct. The Dempsey tract in Washington County, Mo., had a small production of lead-zinc ore from shallow workings. Old dumps from early-day lead mining contain about 25,000 tons of ore averaging about 3 percent combined zinc and lead. Because of the urgent war requirements for lead and zinc, the Dempsey property was examined by Otto Ruhl, formerly an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in August 1942 and selected for further investigation by churn drilling twenty holes totaling 1,309 feet were bored in the fall of 1943. The results of the work are presented in this paper.

Bench-scale and continuous testing were performed to adapt the anionic process for flotation of calcium activated silica to the fine-grained hematitic-goethitic jaspers from the Marquette range, Michigan. These ores typically contain about 35 percent Fe and require grinding to about 80 to 100 percent minus 400 mesh to insure an adequate liberation of gangue from the iron oxides. A method for removal of troublesome slime fractions without excessive iron loss, by first dispersing the quartz and then selectively flocculating the iron oxides, was evolved in the laboratory and successfully accommodated to pilot plant practice. The efficiency of the flotation process was improved with respect to both reagent usage and concentrate grade and recovery by using the selective flocculation-desliming technique as a pretreatment. The benefits of the combined desliming-flotation procedure were most evident in pilot plant processing. The best tests on two ores yielded recoveries of about 84 percent in concentrates containing 65.1 percent Fe and 4.8 percent SiO2 and 66.2 percent Fe and 3.9 percent SiO2, respectively. These results are in comparison to recoveries about 10 percent lower than the above to concentrates containing 63.9 percent Fe and 6.6 percent SiO2 in the one instance, and 63.6 percent Fe and 7.2 percent SiO2 in the other, obtained by flotation without the prior desliming treatment.

In this final stage of a three-part investigation of the smelting of titania-bearing iron materials, the Bureau of Mines conducted semicontinuous smelting tests in a laboratory electric arc furnace on four concentrates and one are. The objective was to substantiate the significance of liquidus temperature measurements in predicting satisfactory slag compositions in electric furnace smelting of titaniferous magnetites to produce pig iron. Previously obtained liquidus temperature data were used in determining flux requirements. Self-fluxing pellets of either ore or concentrate plus fluxes and reductants were made to produce pig iron and slags containing 0.2 to 0.6 percent titanium. Individual constituents of the slags generally agreed within 5 percent with the value of the corresponding constituent of target composition. Liquidus temperature of furnace slags generally agreed within 50° C of the value obtained from corresponding nominal synthetic slag. The results of the three phases of the investigation may serve as guide-lines for determining flux requirements in smelting a wide variety of titaniferous magnetites and other titania and iron-bearing materials.

"INTRODUCTION The Cphir Hill Consolidated mine was examined 2/ in January 1944. It was recommended that the mine be explored for the purpose of increasing of lead and zinc ore.The Bureau of Mines began exploratory work at the mine in June 1944 and completed it in June 1945. The work was planned to indicate ore that could be developed and extracted quickly and consisted of core drilling and trenching.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Its the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by cash exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, O. C. "INTRODUCTION This report describes an exploratory project conducted by the Bureaus of Mines on a fluorite deposit, near Glenwood, N. Mex. Results of wagon drilling, crosscutting, and test pitting are given, together with results of metallurgical tests made upon samples of the ore. Mining and treatment methods are suggested.C. H. Johnson, Bureau of Mines engineer, examined the deposit in August 1942. H. E. Rothrock, of the Federal Geological Survey, completed a preliminary geologic study and mapped the deposit during the fall of 1942. As a result of these brief investigations, it was concluded that the deposit contained substantial inferred ore reserves, and exploratory work was recommended. G. A. ApelI, also of the Bureau of Mines, made a topographic and underground survey and report on the mine in March and April 1944. A wagon drill, air compressor, and other equipment and supplies were delivered to the property on May 19 to 23, 1944. Drilling began under the direction of the author on May 25, 1944, and was completed in October 1944. The results of drilling and. sampling form the basis of this report."

The Bureau of Mines is using model ducts lined with coal to study the nature of coal mine fires, their rate of propagation, their influence on ventilation airflows, and their response to sealing and other fire suppression measures. For scale-modeling purposes these studies are being carried out in various size ducts; eventually they will include a full-size mine entry in the Bruceton multiple-entry Experimental Mine. To date, work has been carried out in an insulated 9.l-m-long duct with a 5-cm thickness of coal leaving a 23-by 23-cm square opening for air ventilation. Fire propagation processes in this duct were mainly transient in nature owing to the relatively small length-to-diameter ratio. This report describes the experimental equipment employed and the results obtained to date.

The investigation of major and minor coal-mine disasters has been a routine function of the Bureau of Mines since its inception in 1910, and the facts obtained during such investigations have been used as a basis for determining the precautions that the managements and employees of many mines are observing to forestall similar occurrences. The Bureau has conducted research on roof-control and other mine problems, but a comprehensive study of other fatal accidents was not attempted until February 10, 1950, when the policy of investigating all coal-mine fatalities in the United States was approved by Bureau of Mines Director James Boyd. The investigations are being conducted by Federal coal mine inspectors functioning under the provisions of the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May, 1941, Public Law 49; and reports covering the investigations are distributed to management, the State mine-inspection agency, and representatives of the mine workers&apos; organization have jurisdiction at the mine.

In the Scurry Reef field, Scurry County, Tex., a study was made to determine the physical properties of the oil in all parts of the reservoir by a new method developed for this study. The method involved correlation of data from a survey 1 of the gravity of the produced oil, from measurements of gas-oil ratios on key wells selected to give representative data for the entire reservoir, and from laboratory analyses of reservoir oil samples. A field survey was made of the API gravities of the produced oil by testing oil samples from 107 key wells. Precise gas-oil-ratio tests were made on 45 key wells that were producing under comparable separator-operating conditions. Subsurface-oil samples were obtained from seven wells, selected to provide reservoir oils ranging approximately from a minimum to a maximum in saturation pressure. The physical properties of the subsurface-oil samples were determined, and correlations were made of these laboratory data with the field gas-oil-ratio test data. These correlations were then used to estimate physical properties of the oil throughout the reservoir. A logical procedure of determining the variations in physical properties of reservoir oils in most fields is to obtain and analyze subsurface-oil samples from enough key wells to provide an ample coverage of the field. Under this procedure, data from a large number of samples would be needed to provide the desired information on the Scurry Reef field, as it is one of the largest known in the United States.

Using a nitrided fused-iron catalyst, the Bureau of Mines investigated the Fischer-Tropsch reaction in the oil-circulation process. The nitrided iron was quite stable and permitted the longest run obtained thus far in the oil-circulation process without the need for reactivating the catalyst--3,700 hours of operation. The effects of several operating variables--temperature, pressure, gas-recycle ratio, space velocity, synthesis-gas composition, and synthesis with and without reflux of oil to the reactor--on the production of oxygenates were studied. The importance of removing reflux oil and of high gas recycle in increasing the oxygenate content was shown. A finished gasoline containing 28 percent by weight alcohols was produced. The research octane number (RON) was 92.9 clear, increasing to 98.5 with the addition of one milliliter of tetraethyl lead (TEL). INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged since 1944 in a research and development program on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a "synthesis gas"--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va., and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

Vermiculite is the name of a group of micaceous minerals characterized by their property of exfoliating when heated and thereby increasing many times their original volume. The resulting product has excellent heat-and sound-insulating properties, is used as a lightweight aggregate, and has numerous other industrial applications. Deposits of vermiculite occur in areas of pre-Cambrian rocks of the Llano uplift of central Texas, particularly in Burnet and Llano Counties. Because of the growing economic importance of vermiculite products, the Bureau of Mines undertook a detailed investigation of several deposits in Llano County. This investigation was completed in February 1947. The work comprised topographic surveys of five deposits, drilling with a 4-1/4 inch Parmanco power auger drill, and laboratory evaluation of samples. 342 drill holes, aggregating 4,905.5 feet, were completed, and 377 samples were taken. Laboratory evaluation of the vermiculite comprised expansion tests on both crude and beneficiated samples. The products obtained were compared with commercial-grade vermiculite from Montana.

Plant samples collected from the mined sites of Beulah, Center and Zap and the test sites of North Beulah 1, North Beulah If, South Beulahh and Center were analyzed for their nutrient concentrations. The vegetation from the mined areas generally showed lower concentrations of Na, P and Cu and failed to meet the nutritional requirements for beef cattle as defined by National Research Council (minimum requirements are: Na, 600; Cu, 4; P, 1800 µg/g dry weight). Plants from Beulah showed generally higher concentrations than from Center or Tap. Tissue concentrations of K varied significantly between sites for 5 species due to the low tissue concentrations at Center. Deficiencies are difficult to isolate as the sampling was done in mid-summer and generally during that season the tissue concentrations tend to decrease in several species. All of the plant species at the unmined sites, with the exception of western wheatgrass at Zap, had lower concentrations of P than the minimum nutritional requirements for beef cattle. Sodium concentration was low but Cu was marginal to adequate in plant species at the unmined sites. Concentrations of K, Mn and Cu in western wheatgrass were greater at Center than at Zap while the opposite was true of the concentrations of Zn, Cu and P in blue grama and Cu in green needlegrass. Amending the spoil with slack at North Beulah I decreased the concentrations of Zn, Cu and P in wheatgrasses grown on spoil from 0-2, 5-10, and 20-25 foot depths, respectively. In general, the mean tissue K+/Na+ ratios were greater in plants on slack amended spoils, primarily due to the reduced Na concentrations in the tissue. At North Beulah II test site, only wheatgrasses grown on spoil amended with slack showed significant increase in K and decrease in Na and Mn concentrations. At South Beulah test site which received 12" topsoil over graded spoil, leonardite amendment decreased P concentrations in all of the grasses as compared to control, whereas fertilizer treatment increased the same. Nutrient concentrations were lower in both fescue and needlegrass with leonardite treatment and higher with fertilizer treatment although not significantly different from control. The concentrations of Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Cu and N in grasses grown on topsoil at Center test site were significantly higher than on slack amended spoil. Legumes grown on topsoil at Center site contained higher concentrations of P than those grown on spoil; there were no significant effects due to slack on spoil or topsoil. The data presented in this report act only as an indication of between-treatment and between-species differences in tissue composition of plants harvested in mid-summer season. With respect to the nutrients analyzed, since none were found to be toxic, the cattle can safely feed on the vegetation of these mined areas.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory, are investigating technology and methods to monitor the blind areas around large haulage equipment used in surface mines. On average, six fatalities a year can be attributed to equipment colliding with other vehicles or pedestrian workers, or backing over the edge of a dump point. Several off-the-shelf technologies exist for monitoring areas that an equipment operator cannot see from the cab, including radar, video cameras, and radio signal detection systems. NIOSH researchers have tested many of these systems on large dump trucks both at their test facility and at surface mines. This article discusses the technologies available for this application and their effectiveness in detecting objects near an off-highway dump truck. Also, guidance is presented for mine safety personnel who are planning to evaluate collision warning systems or cameras on their haulage equipment. Available Technology Over the past few years, the number and types of systems available for monitoring the blind areas around heavy equipment have increased. Traditionally, fine coal is more troublesome than the coarser sizes at every step of the coal-preparation process--screening, cleaning, dewatering, and drying. Therefore the present trend toward a higher proportion of fines in the run-of-mine product, brought about by changes in mining practice necessitated to increase productivity, has added greatly to the task of preparing coal for the market. One of the more difficult and costly problems involved is that of recovering fine solids from the washery water. These fine solids should be recovered in the interest of conservation, and they must be removed to provide recirculating water of proper quality. If there is a plant effluent, it must meet increasingly stringent requirements against stream pollution. Vacuum filtration has been used for years at a few plants to recover the extreme fines, but its additional cost discouraged general adoption until recently. Now, with growing emphasis on better solids recovery, filtration is becoming more widespread. Many coal slurries filter readily, giving high cake rates and clean filtrates. Others, however, particularly those containing either a high proportion of material finer than 200-mesh or an appreciable amount of clay, are much more difficult to filter. Many of these refractory slurries can be rendered more filterable by flocculation. A previous report of Bureau of Mines research dealing with flocculation alone was published in 1940.5/

The Bureau of Mines is conducting a series of investigations, with a view to ascertaining the most efficient methods of obtaining gasoline from petroleum and natural gas. This report deals with a method of extracting gasoline from natural gas by absorbing the gasoline in oil and subsequently separating it from the oil by distillation. The process is quite different from those of compression and condensation which have been used for a number of years for extracting gasoline from casing-head natural gas, and has not heretofore been described in the literature. MANUFACTURE OF GASOLINE FROM CASING-HEAD GAS. The extraction of gasoline from casing-head natural gas by compression and condensation methods has become a large and lucrative industry in this country. In the year 1915 about 65,000,000a gallons of gasoline prepared by these methods was placed on the market. In addition, in marketing this gasoline, at many plants an equivalent quantity of naphtha was blended with the gasoline, thereby utilizing for automobile fuel and other purposes a large quantity of naphtha that otherwise would have been unsuited for these purposes. The increase for the year 1915 over 1914 was about 22,000,000 gallons. For the year 1916 the production should be more than 100,000,000 gallons. The quantity of casing-head gas treated in the year 1915 by compression and condensation methods amounted to about 24,000,000,000 cubic feet; the average yield of gasoline was 2.57 gallons per 1,000 cubic feet. b This casing-head gas represents natural gas that formerly went largely to waste; hence the process represented a distinct and important step in the utilization of the natural gas produced in this country.

More specifically, phosphate rock may be defined as a natural rock containing one or more phosphate minerals, usually calcium phosphate, of sufficient purity and in sufficient quantity to permit its use directly, or after beneficiation, in the manufacture of phosphorus-bearing products. The grade or quality of phosphate rock is expressed either in terms of its phosphorus oxide (P20S) content or the equivalent in tricalcium phosphate (Ca3(P04)2).
