The exploration work on a seleniferous tuff deposit near Lysite, Wyo., was confined chiefly to an area of approximately 1 square mile selected on the basis of prior examination and sampling work by the Bureau of Mines. This area was superficially explored by digging and sampling over 2,000 feet of trenches and 15 test pits. The surface sampling indicated that the deposit might contain a multimillion-ton reserve of easy-to-mine volcanic tuff assaying more than 0.01 percent Se. Later, 11 holes, ranging in depth from 57 to 135 feet and totaling 929.4 feet, were drilled under contract using a dry rotary drill. Samples for assay were cut at 5-foot intervals or at noticeable physical changes in the formation being drilled. Of the 206 samples assayed from the drilling, only 8 contained more than 0.005 percent selenium, and 2 of these assayed as high as 0.012 percent Se. Chemical analyses of samples obtained from six holes drilled by the Nugget Coal & Timber Co. to the south of the area explored by the Bureau of Mines showed that no selenium-bearing formations were encountered in that work. Two of 72 samples taken from 42 validation pits dug by claim holders contained more than 0.005 percent selenium. The exploratory work established that the selenium mineralization is erratically distributed in small irregular bodies and is not confined to any one tuff bed. Because of the lack of correlation between the infrequent showing of low-grade tuff, neither the extent nor grade of the reserves could be calculated.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting an investi-gation of crude petroleum from producing fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere and has published a series of reports on these fields. Analyses of crude-oil samples from some oil fields of Louisiana are given in Bulletin 291. Analyses Of 26 representative crude oils from various producing formations of southern Louisiana are given in this report. These samples are from 14 fields in 10 parishes in the southern part of the State, usually designated as the "Louisiana Gulf Coast area."

"Introduction.Sixty years ago, M. Berthelot found that ethylene could be selectively absorbed from gaseous mixtures by concentrated sulphuric acid, and that the compound formed by the chemical union of the gas and acid was readily decomposed by heating with water, yielding ethyl alcohol. Only within the last few years has there been any attempt to make use of this discovery technically.Bury*, working in England at the Skinningrove Iron Works and on a commercial scale, developed a technical method for converting, the ethylene of coke-oven as into alcohol. With a gas containing less than 3 per cent of ethylene, he obtained a yield of 1.6 gallons of alcohol per ton of coal carbonized.De Loisy** perfected a technical method for treatment of coke-oven as for alcohol. Evidently this work was carried out on a semi-commercial scale. His method is based on the use of catalytic agents for hastening the absorption of ethylene by sulphuric acid. He uses part of the spent acid for drying the gases and pact for the manufacture of ammonium sulphate. Excess acid is reconcentrated by waste heat. Others have worked on the problem, but so far there has been no large recovery of ethylene from coke-oven gases. The chief difficulty seems to lie in the low efficiency (about 50% of methods and tae relatively low concentrations of ethylene in the gases treated. "Experiments in the determination of friction factors for fan-pipe installations were carried on in a Butte mine during the fall and winter of 1922-23, under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Anaconda Ccpper Mining Co. The results have been summarized in a separate paper,*** and this report, which is one of several giving more detailed data, discusses the methods used and the application of the results to fan-pipe practice.The use of canvas and galvanized-iron pipe, 8 to 20 inches in diameter, with small fans, usually electrically driven blowers, is an important factor in the ventilation of metal mines and is increasing in coal mines and long tunnels. In the Matte district the standard installation is an electrically driven small blower fan and 8 to 16 inch canvas pipe.The application of available data on friction losses in sheet-metal pipe to mine installations was doubtful, and very little has been published on canvas pipe, except general statements that the friction looses are greater than in galvanized-iron pipe. Experiments by Weeks and others,**** who determined friction losses under laboratory conditions for a few typical materials used in mine equipment, supported the statements.In 1918, one of the authors (Richardson) conducted tests for the Anaconda Copper Mining Cc. on the friction losses in canvas-pipe systems and the beet type of centrifugal blower for use with such pipe lines. He obtained the average total resistance per unit of length in use, without reference to the variable conditions of the lines. The results were of great value in developing more efficient equipment for average service conditions, and indicated that average friction losses for the commercial canvas tubing then used by the company were equal to or lees than these given for galvanized-iron pipe. Later on, the particular canvas tested was discarded for a heavier and more service-material."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed porous beads containing immobilized biological materials such as sphagnum peat moss for extracting metal contaminants from waste waters. The beads, designated as BIO-FIX beads, have removed toxic metals from over 100 waters in laboratory tests. These waters include acid mine drainage (AMD) water from mining sites, metallurgical and chemical industry waste water, and contaminated ground water. Following the laboratory studies, cooperative field tests were conducted to evaluate the metal adsorption properties of the beads in column and low-maintenance circuits, determine bead stability in varied climatic situations, and demonstrate the beads' potential as a viable waste water treatment technique. Field results indicated that BIO-FIX beads readily adsorbed cadmium, lead, and other toxic metals from dilute waters; effluents frequently met drinking water standards and other discharge criteria. The beads exhibited excellent handling characteristics in both column and low-maintenance circuits, and continued to extract metal ions after repeated loading-elution cycles. Based on laboratory and field data, cost evaluations for using BIO-FIX technology to treat two AMD waters were prepared. Operating costs for BIO-FIX treatment, which ranged from $1.40 to $2.30 per 1,000 gal of water treated, were comparable with chemical precipitation costs.

Flotation tests were conducted on two samples of copper-nickel-bearing ore from the Harriman area near Rockport, Maine. The samples were taken by Roland F. Beers, Inc., for tests in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines. One sample, analyzing 0.38 percent copper and 0.71 percent nickel, was essentially a disseminated pyrrhotite in hypersthene. Pentlandite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and millerite were intimately associated with the pyrrhotite. Locked series flotation tests on this sample showed that 87.4 and 73.4 percent of the copper and nickel, respectively, could be recovered in a bulk concentrate that analyzed 3.47 percent copper and 5.34 percent nickel. The copper-and nickel-bearing minerals were collected with sulfhydric collectors in an alkaline circuit. Cleaning the concentrate three times with the addition of pH regulators was sufficient to attain the previously stated grades. The second sample had analyses of 0.31 percent copper and 0.85 percent nickel; talc and hypersthene were the main gangue minerals. Bulk sulfide flotation, made while depressing the talc, resulted in a concentrate that analyzed 2.33 percent copper and 4.70 percent nickel at recoveries of 70.0 and 54.4 percent, respectively. Flotation of the talc followed by bulk sulfide flotation resulted in a nickel content greater than 5 percent. A locked-series test showed that 60.7 percent of the copper and 73.7 percent of the nickel could be recovered at grades of 1.29 and 4.85 percent, respectively.

This paper describing the mining practices at the Argonaut mine, Amador County, California, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mining practices described are those used in exploiting the low-grade gold ores in the heavy and swelling ground that occurs on the Mother Lode belt. The author acknowledges the assistance of E. In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, mine and mill cost models are presented to make quick estimates of the cost to develop mineral deposits in the desert region of the Southwest United States. Regression analysis was used to generate capital and operating cost equations for each model in the form Y = AXB, where Y is the cost estimated and X is the assumed daily capacity in short tons. A and B are constants determined by the regression analysis. Each is broken down into 11 subcategories to facilitate escalation of costs for inflation and to increase their versatility in economic evaluation work. This report contains 2 open pit models, 6 underground mine models, 11 mill models, and cost equations for access roads, powerlines, and tailings ponds. In addition, adjustment factors for variation in haulage distances are provided for open pit models and variation in mining depths for underground models.

As part of a Bureau of Mines survey of radioactive waste disposal , a laboratory investigation was made to study such problems in carbonate leaching mills . Because uranium concentrators employing carbonate leaching with caustic precipitation normally recycle barren solutions to the washing circuit , the disposal of liquid radioactive wastes is automatically controlled . However , it was deemed important to determine the actual radium 226 concentrations occurring in this type of milling so that the survey of the entire industry would be complete . The laboratory procedure consisted of leaching the ground ore at 85 ° to 90 ° C and 50 pct solids for 6 hours in a sodium carbonate - sodium bicarbonate solution . The pulp was filtered to obtain a pregnant solution that was reacted with sodium hydroxide to precipitate the uranium as sodium diuranate . Regeneration of the barren solution was accomplished by gassing with carbon dioxide . The solution then was reused by advancing the solution through the washing to the leaching operations . The radioactivity in the pregnant solution was unusually high , averaging 6,500 disintegrations per minute ( dpm ) of radium 226 per liter . However , over 95 pct of the radium was precipitated with the uranium . Consequently , no buildup of radium occurred upon reuse of the barren solutions for washing .

This Bureau of Mines open file report is one in a series of reports written about the Valdez Creek Mining District (VCM D) as a result of the continuing Bureau of Mines mining district evaluation program. This report presents the results of order-of-magnitude mining feasibility studies. The mining feasibility studies were conducted for mineral deposit models that were based on real and hypothetical deposits that occur in the VCMD. A total of 6b mine models were developed for application to the mineral deposit models. The goal of the feasibility study was to determine the monetary value per unit of minable ore that would cause the simulated cash flow for each of 66 mine models to achieve certain pre-defined rates of return for the invested capital.

[The Cartersville mining district is in Bartow County, Ga., about 40 miles northwest of Atlanta. Barite, limonite, ocher, amber, hematite, and, manganese oxide ores have been produced from the strict since about 1840. In the search for a possible source of manganese ore, Bureau of Mines engineers made a preliminary study of the district from September 1950 to January 1951. During this study 139 deposits were examined, and many mineral exposures were sampled. Manganese mineralization occurs as fine oxide and concretionary pellets in residual clays, as fine oxides in umberous clay, in brown-iron deposits, and in a limited quantity in mud ponds and Jig-tailing piles. The future supply of ferrograde manganese ore from the district, using current mining and benefication methods, appears limited to the recovery of the hard manganese ores deposits. Rough estimates indicate a reserve of manganese-bearing clays of about 8,000,000 long tons. This type of deposit has been extensively exploited and the larger deposits mined out to depths of from 50 to 200 feet. The remainder of these deposits are low grade, are covered with deep layers of colluvium, or lie below the ground-water table. Any future production from this source will require systematic prospecting, improved concentration, and an increase in the price of concentrate.]

The ever -present danger of mine fires and the possibility of hazardous atmospheric conditions in underground mines make a well-equipped mine rescue station a valuable asset to any mining district . Rescue equipment without proper maintenance provides only false security , because neglect may make the apparatus unfit for use in an emergency . Promptness in fighting mine fires is important ; frequently the first 30 minutes of action are worth many hours later . Likewise , the equipment will be of little value if enough men trained in its use are not readily available . This circular points out how such protection has been provided in an Arizona mining district by establishing a well- organized , adequately equipped , central mine rescue station. ·

This paper3 describing the mining methods at the Page mine operated by the Federal Mining & Smelting Co., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Page mine is the most westerly of the producing lead-silver-zinc mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of Idaho, being situated 5 miles west of the city of Kellogg and at an elevation of 2,677 feet above sea level. It may be classed as one of the new active producers, of the district and owes its present activity largely to the development of floatation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated lode tin deposits on Potato Mountain, Seward Peninsula, Alaska. Tin was found to occur as cassiterite associated with quartz, tourmaline, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and earthy clays, but the deposits lack the varied accessory minerals commonly found in tin districts. The tin-bearing deposits are in metasediments along minor breaks and bedding planes but not in the crushed earthy filling of major faults. Cassiterite and sulfides occur with quartz in veins, both with and without earthy clays, and disseminated through tourmalinized wall rocks. The deposits are characterized by irregular segregations containing 1 to 10 percent tin within zones averaging not over 0.25 percent tin. The largest segregation exposed is on the summit of a low hill on the east-central slopes of Little Potato Mountain; most of the outcroppings are in an area trending east to west, roughly 10 to 30 feet wide and 300 feet long. Sample values ranged as high as 12 percent tin, but the average grade may be about 1 percent tin. The extreme irregularity of both grade and composition precludes a more exact determination. Similar concentrations are scattered for over 1,000 feet to the west and north, but these are smaller and lower in grade. Elsewhere on Potato Mountain, generally similar deposits occur as clusters of veinlets at widely separated points in the metasedimentary walls of major faults.

The thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity, and Seebeck coefficient for nine compounds, based on the formula for enargite Cu3AsS3, were measured in a search for efficient materials to be used in thermoelectric generators or refrigerators. Results indicate that one of these compounds, Cu3SbSe4, has thermoelectric properties approaching those of bismuth telluride. An investigation of the effect of adding small quantities of tellurium to Cu3SbSe4 and Cu3SbS4 in order to improve their properties also was made. A figure of merit of 2.1 x 10-4 °C-1 was obtained for Cu3SbSe4 + 0.1 percent tellurium.

An analysis of the geologic structure of an area of Buchanan County, Va., was made by the Bureau of Mines using imagery from an airborne AN/APQ-97 side-looking radar system to evaluate that mapping technique for delineating structural features that may cause mining problems. Side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) was found to be a useful remote sensing tool for geologic structural analysis, Fault and joint systems identified by lineaments and linear patterns in the imagery were verified by surface and in-mine observations. Little Paw Paw fault was extended 10 miles by SLAR lineament analysis. A 22-mile fault, here named the Bishop-Bradshaw Creek fault, was mapped by lineament analysis and verified by observation of the fault on the Bishop Coal Co. mine map and on offset patterns of commercial gas production along the fault and surface observation of lineament along the fault. Three major super-imposed joint sets and several fault or fractured zones were identified by SLAR lineament analysis, showing more complex structure than earlier mapping indicated. SLAR imagery accurately delineated structural features that are known to affect gas migration and accumulation and that weaken the rock forming the immediate roof to mine workings, causing mining problems and potentially hazardous environment in the mines.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducts a comprehensive test program on clay and shale at the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Center. All samples are subjected to standard preliminary ceramic tests, which include firing formed briquets at temperatures ranging from 1,000° to 1,250° C to identify firing range and colors, and quick-firing to determine bloating characteristics. Materials that shop potential as structural products are further tested after either extrusion or dry-pressing. If the quick-fire test is positive, bulk samples can be fired in a rotary kiln to evaluate their potential as light- weight aggregate A number of miscellaneous tests also can be conducted if requested. These tests determine properties such as refractoriness (pyrometric cone equivalency), oil-bleaching characteristics, oil absorbency, viscosity for drilling-mud applications, sand-bonding properties for foundry usage, and pelletizing characteristics.
