The wolframite mineral series was studied to determine the effect of the FeO - MnO ratio on unit cell symmetry and thermal stability. This work was undertaken to evaluate the analytical procedures now in use for wolframite in scheelite and to aid in the development of improved methods of analysis. Wolframite grains were hand-picked, crushed, and screened; impurities were removed by selective magnetic separations using a Frantz isodynamic separator. The samples were further checked by optical spectroscopic and microscopic examination.

A molecular beam-mass spectrometer-low pressure flat flame apparatus has been constructed for the purpose of examining the chemical microstructure of normal methane-oxygen-argon flames and those inhibited with Halon extinguishants. Details of construction and performance of this apparatus and of related flame temperature measurements are given. Particular attention is paid to the empirical characterization of the perturbation to the flame caused by the sampling probes. The composition profiles obtained for normal flames are compared to those of flames inhibited by CF3Br. In addition to the usual stable species (CH4, O2, CO, CO2, H2O, H2, and H2CO), the inhibitor, its products and intermediates associated with its reactions could be followed. In particular, hydrogen bromide, bromine atoms, hydrogen fluoride, and carbonyl fluoride were observed. The relatively rapid disappearance of inhibitor and early appearance of fluorinated reaction products suggest a short lifetime for the CF3 radical in this system. Observation of COF2 suggests that CF3Br is effective as an inhibitor, at least in part, by virtue of its interference with the oxygen containing species of the normal chain reaction. Profiles of the 17+ peak at low electron energy suggests that the hydroxyl radical may also be sampled, but the profiles obtained are not yet sufficiently accurate to determine the effect of inhibitor on this important flame radical.

An investigation of hazardous surface openings of abandoned and inactive underground mines in the Black Hills area of South Dakota has revealed: (1) tracing legal ownership of mineral claims via county courthouses is confusing, complex, and oftentimes misleading, (2) in general, the selected mine openings in this investigation are to be considered relatively high in risks and hazard potential which poses a threat to the general public, (3) mine closure procedures and designs can generally be categorically implemented depending on the overall situation of the particular mine opening with subsequent unit costs estimates, (4) few preventive state or federal legal measures exist to date concerning mine closures, and (5) liability damages relating to mine opening accidents usually involve expensive and complex common law cases.

The monorail bridge conveyor (MBC) is a prototype continuous face haulage system that was surface tested and evaluated by the Bureau of Mines. The MBC consists of a series of cascading belt bridge conveyors suspended from roof-supported monorail track. Tests were conducted to determine MBC haulage capability, maneuverability, power consumption, and reliability using rigid and chain-suspended monorail track installations. Subsequent modifications to improve operation and reliability made during surface testing are described. Mining plans were devised to show potential MBC installations for room-and-pillar, longwall development, and shortwall mining sections. Compatibility tests were conducted with the Bureau's prototype hopper-feeder, to provide additional surge capacity and lump-breaking capability. Results from the surface test program, along with modifications to improve system operation and reliability, indicate that the MBC has the potential to perform success- fully in an in-mine trial.

Uranium mill tailings represent a potential threat to the human habitat by containing large amounts of radioactive and chemically toxic substances in high concentrations. These: undesired components enter the human habitat in various pathways such as by erosion and water or air transport. The main objective of this investigation was to evaluate the actual movement and model the potential movement of contaminants by seepage of water from the tailings into the subtailings soil. This report represents various models of the movement of contaminants using both theoretical approaches and empirical evaluation of data available from other investigations. The data consist of field measurements and laboratory determi¬nations of major and trace cations, the dominant anions, pH, and Eh of moist solids, extracts, and waters from the tailings and surroundings. Evaluation and interpre¬tation of data were accomplished by using Eh-pH diagrams, various statistical methods and the WATEQFC computer program. Data analyses show that the critical area of investigating movement- is the interfaces between tailings and the external environment. The chemical differences at interfaces seem to result in a sink system for contaminants. The tailings-soil¬-water system shows extreme complexities because of chemical and physical hetero¬geneity of the system preventing the use of a single comprehensive model to represent real conditions. The validity of the simplifying assumption used has been shown and increasing complexity has been built into the models. Analogs of these models can be used for evaluation of similar systems.

Introduction Industrial exposure to whole-body vibration is associated with injury and discomfort. Certain industries, notably mining, construction, and forestry, involve complex 6 degrees of freedom vibration. Laboratory-based studies of vibration are essential for controlled and systematic evaluation of the human responses to vibration2. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate whether the duration of the vibration exposure, and rest between vibrations, significantly influence the subjective ratings of comfort during laboratory-based studies of vibration. Methods Subjects: The cumulative vibration dose was calculated, and was below the health guidance caution zone recommended by International standards3. The experimental procedures were approved by the University of Guelph Research Ethics Board. Ten adult subjects participated in this pilot experiment. All subjects completed the entire experimental paradigm; no subjects complained of pain during or after the experiment. Experimental Design: The experiment consisted of four blocks of vibration exposures; either 15 or 20 seconds of vibration (1 df:Z axis, 3 df:XY plane, 3df:YZ plane, or 6 df) alternating with either 5 or 10 seconds rest. The order of presentation of the four blocks was randomized. Each of the blocks was composed of 37 individual sinusoidal vibration exposures in randomized sequence. This abstract focused on ten identical trials, (6.3 Hz vertical vibration, 0.55 m/s2 RMS) interspersed within each block, in order to assess whether the subjects’ comfort ratings systematically varied between the 15 or 20 vibration exposures, the 5 or 10 second rest between vibrations, or within each block. The experiment involved 43 minutes of vibration within the 62 minute experiment. Vibration Apparatus: A commercial parallel robotic platform was used to apply the specific vibration exposures (R2000, Parallel Robotics Systems Corporation, Hampton, New Hampshire). The subjects sat on a passenger seat from a 1992 Honda Accord that was rigidly mounted to the robotic platform (Figure 1). This robotic system performed the specific vibration exposures operating under closed-loop displacement control. A custom-written Matlab program automated the testing sequence.

The Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0101706 with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University was a part of a broad-scale investigation directed toward applied problems in mine safety and particularly toward preventing accidents and fatalities resulting from falls of roof and ribs in coal mines. Under the auspices of the Chemical Stabilization Program, Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center, Spokane, Washington, the broad objective of the Contract was to conduct research for the purpose of studying the behavior of large engineering structures. Contract No. H0101706 consisted of two related but distinct tasks. TASK I was to make "Barodynamic Analysis of Large Mine Models," and TASK II was "Preparation of Undisturbed Rock Specimens.?

The Bureau of Mines located and examined 292 burning coal refuse banks throughout the Nation's coal-producing regions in 1968. These coal waste fires, extending over 3,200 acres, produce poisonous, acrid gases and particulate matter that pose a threat to health and safety in the surrounding areas, damage vegetation, and cause the deterioration of nearby structures and buildings. Methods of extinguishing coal refuse fires are discussed, and an approach to eliminating future occurrences of these fires is presented.

This section of the Minerals Yearbook reviews the minerals industries of 27 countries: the 12 nations of the European Community (Belgium, Dermark/Greenland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom); 6 of the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (Austria, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden); Malta; the 8 Eastern European economies in transition (Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Yugoslavia); and the U.S.S.R. Western Europe Western Europe [loosely defined to include the 12 nations of the European Community (EC) and the 7 nations of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA)] is the single largest trading area and consumer of raw materials in the world. If Western Europe was at one time an important mining sector, it has now increasingly relegated the role of supplying minerals for its minerals processing industry to the more minerally endowed countries in North and South America, Africa, and Australia. In this regard, Western Europe is the most important determinant of raw materials consumption (and thus, indirectly, raw materials production). Western Europe has significant reserves of industrial minerals but has limited availability of metalliferous raw materials. It, therefore, imports significant quantities of the latter and ranks along with the United States and the U.S.S.R. in the production of refined metals. Nonetheless, there is an inherent tendency to underestimate the importance of Western Europe in the world of minerals, both as a minerals processor and raw materials buyer. The reason for this is that Western Europe is generally thought of on the basis of individual nations rather than as a whole. Viewed in this limited context, the United States, the U.S.S.R., and Japan appear to dominate the world economy. Viewed as one regional area, however, Western Europe includes the fourth (FRG), fifth (France), sixth (United Kingdom) and seventh (Italy) largest economies of the world, all bordering on one another. With the remaining 15 EC and EFTA countries, Western Europe has a land area approximately 40 % of that of the United States, exceeds the U.S. population by 50 % and has a gross domestic product about the same as that of the United States.

When the Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines within the Department of the Interior, the Bureau's programs involved only health and safety research and education, and fuels testing. As the Federal Government's primary agency for research in minerals, the Bureau has expanded its scientific and technological investigations to mining, processing minerals substances, eliminating occupational health and safety hazards in the mineral industries, economic development, and resource conservation. Today, Bureau activities cover a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse (and sometimes conflicting) needs of mineral industries, government, and the public. In the 1960's, the Bureau initiated programs to resolve environmental problems associated with past mining and mineral processing. In the 1970's, the energy crisis raised the national consciousness concerning our limited supplies of domestic mineral and fuel resources. Dependence on foreign sources of raw materials critical to our national economy and competition from other countries for these world supplies stimulated the need to conserve and use with intelligence the Nation's minerals, metals, and fuels.

The Florida phosphate industry currently produces more than 80 pct of the total U.S. marketable output of phosphate rock. Because phosphate is one of three principal nutrients used in formulating a complete fertilizer, it is imperative that an uninterrupted supply of this material be available to meet the agricultural requirements of the United States while maintaining a viable phosphate industry which is competitive in world markets. As a result of an evaluation made by the Bureau of Mines, five areas were identified that affect the overall production and projected growth of the phosphate industry in Florida. These areas relate to the technological ability of the industry to comply with environmental regulations and performance standards by using the best available technology. The most significant technical problem facing the industry is the management of the clay fraction rejected during the beneficiation of phosphate ores. Other areas of concern are environmental restrictions and regulatory requirements, issues associated with mining and reclamation of wetlands, reclamation of other disturbed lands, and consumptive water use. Each of these areas is reviewed, with major emphasis placed on the current state-of-the-art processes for treatment and management of phosphatic clays.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1987 was $446.6 million, an increase over that of 1986 and the first increase in 3 years. Alabama was second in the Nation in production of bauxite and ferroalloys; third in bentonite, crushed dolomite, crushed marble, and fire clay; and fourth in masonry cement. Trends and Developments.-Employment in the minerals industry remained relatively low for the second year even though the overall unemployment rate dropped to 7.9% by December. Employment in mining and primary metals dropped about 10% and 2%, respectively.

The Federal Bureau of Mines made pilot plant investigations of the process requirements necessary to produce heavy fuel oil by the liquid-phase hydrogenation of bituminous coal. The investigation was carried out in three separate series of experiments. The first series studied the effect of temperature and contact time on product distribution at 3,500 p.s.i.g. and 420° to 480° C. in the presence of 0.1 wt.-pct../ stannous sulfide plus 0.05 wt.-pct. iodoform based on gross coal. As a result of increased contact times and temperatures, the conversion-6/ and yield of hydrocarbon gas increased, the viscosity of product oil decreased, and elimination of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur from coal increased. The yield of oil did not indicate any definite trend with changes in temperature and contact time. The yield of oil ranged from 76 to 85 pct. for Pittsburgh coal and from 60 to 85 pct. for Rock Springs coal. Asphaltenes in the product oil ranged from 17 to 38 pct. of the total oil for Pittsburgh coal and from 12 to 22 pct. for Rock Springs coal. Fuel oils meeting Bunker C or American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) Grade 6 specifications were produced with Rock Springs coal at 0.2- to 1.0-hr. contact time and 440° to 480° C. and with Pittsburgh coal at 0.3- to 1.0-hr. contact time and 420° to 460° C. In the second series of experiments tin, nickel, iron, and zinc were evaluated as catalysts for the hydrogenation of Rock Springs coal to heavy fuel oil at 3,500 p.s.i.g. and 460° C. Using the apparent conversion of coal as criterion of catalyst activity, at a contact time of 0.45 hr. tin was the most effective catalyst; nickel and iron were nearly as effective, but the use of zinc resulted in much lower conversion. When the contact time was increased to 0.80 hr., the apparent conversion of coal was essentially the same for each of the catalysts. When the yield of oil boiling below 3550 C. was used as criterion of catalyst activity, at 0.45 hr. the order of activity was tin, iron, nickel, and zinc; at 0.80 hr. tin was far superior and the others were essentially equal. The product oils contained from 8 to 20 pct. asphaltenes.

This report summarizes the results of metallurgical investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of manganese oxide ore, averaging 23 to 25 percent manganese, stockpiled at the Butte-Philipsburg depot of General Services Administration (GSA). The oxide ores were stockpiled in two general classifications, straight oxide ore and mixed oxide-carbonate ore. Continuous-circuit flotation tests at the Albany (Oreg.) Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines showed that each of these ore types could be concentrated by an oil-emulsion scheme to produce a concentrate that could be sintered to meet program specifications. About 88 percent of the manganese was recovered in the concentrate from the straight oxide sample, with the sintered concentrate containing 48 percent Mn. The sintered concentrate from the mixed oxide-carbonate sample contained 41 percent Mn with a recovery in the concentrate of 95 percent.

In spite of advances in measurement techniques and an explosive increase in the volume of research, our understanding of human strength remains in its introductory stages. It is clear that muscle strength is a highly complex and variable function that depends on a large number of factors. It is not surprising, therefore, that large differences in strength exist not only between individuals, but even within the same individual tested repeatedly on a given piece of equipment. The issue is compounded by the fact that correlations of strength among different muscle groups in the same individual are generally low, and tests of isometric strength do not necessarily reflect the strength an individual might exhibit in a dynamic test. As a result of these and other influences, great care needs to be exercised in designing, evaluating, reporting, and interpreting muscular strength assessments. Traditionally, tests of muscular strength were in the domain of the orthopaedist, physical therapist, and exercise physiologist. Such tests are also an important tool for the ergonomist, however, because of the high strength demands on workers in manual materials-handling tasks. In some cases, task demands may approach or even exceed the strength that an individual is voluntarily willing to exert in a test of strength. In such cases, evidence suggests that the likelihood of injury is significantly greater than when the task demands lie well within an individual's strength capacity. Because the relationship among strength capabilities, job demands, and musculoskeletal injury has been established, it is apparent that tests of muscular strength may benefit the ergonomist both in designing jobs and in ensuring that individuals have sufficient strength to safely perform physically demanding jobs. Several strength assessment techniques have been employed for these purposes, each possessing unique characteristics and applicability to job design and worker selection procedures. Our main purpose has been to elucidate these strengths and weaknesses, so that tests of strength may be properly applied in designing jobs and selecting workers. One of the crucial points we have emphasized is that any test of strength used in job design or worker selection must be directly related to the demands of the job.(1) For example, if an occupational lifting task has a high dynamic component, a test of isometric strength is not likely to provide the data necessary for proper design of the job. Of course, dynamic strength tests would also be misapplied in assessing a job requiring isometric exertions. Another potential pitfall is using tests of strength on isolated muscle groups and assuming that they are indicative of whole-body strength. For example, one might mistakenly assume that dynamic trunk extension strength represents a person's capability to perform a lifting task. However, an individual's lifting capacity may be entirely unrelated to trunk extension strength. It may, instead, be limited by an individual's arm or leg strength, depending on the task being performed. A final point on strength assessment should be made. This report contains a summary of designs, specifications, costs, and schedules developed for a prototype oil-shale demonstration mining program to be undertaken at the Horse Draw site in the Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The objective of the demonstration program is to assess the feasibility of extracting oil shale and associated saline minerals from deep, rich oil shale zones which occur within the central portion of the Basin. Four mining systems were specified for demonstration. These include (1) chamber and pillar mining with backfill; (2) sublevel stoping with backfill; (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence; and (4) block caving. Commercial-scale designs for each system were modified and scaled down as required to achieve program objectives. The demonstration mine layout and design includes specifications for ore handling, backfilling, ventilation, dewatering, maintenance, and supply systems. A feature of particular interest in the design is the combination of block caving and sublevel stoping methods into a single unit for demonstration of subsidence mining systems in deep oil shale deposits. The report also contains a detailed breakdown of projected capital and operating costs for the demonstration mining program.
