Background: Frictional ignitions continue to be a problem facing the U.S. underground coal mining industry. Many methane igni-tions are associated with the impact of mining machine cutter bits on quartzitic material (e.g., sandstone) during the coal-cutting process. Most ignitions result in small methane-air fireballs often only a few feet in size and limited to the cutter head location. However, under certain conditions, frictional ignitions can lead to larger methane explosions and/or fires with the potential for causing serious injury or death to the mining machine operator and other nearby miners. The requirements for a frictional ignition are a flammable volume of methane-air and an ignition source. This source is usually the hot streak caused by the frictional impact of the mining bit on hard rock, and the frequency of occurrence increases with increased bit wear. Another possible ignition source is the fric-tional impact of rock on rock during a roof fall.

Acute vibration causes vasoconstriction in naïve human subjects1. Vibration-induced decrease in skin perfusion has also been reported in the rat-tail vibration model 2. After vibration exposure, rat-tail arteries demonstrate vacuoles in smooth muscle cells, similar to that caused by pharmacological vasoconstrictors3. This study addressed the effects of different frequencies, durations and patterns of vibration on lumen size and vacuole formation using the rat-tail vibration model in male Sprague-Dawley rats (~300 g). Methods The different groups were: 4-hr continuous vibration at 30, 60, 120 and 800 Hz; continuous exposure durations of 5 min, 1 hr and 4 hr at 60 Hz; and 4-hr cumulative exposure of 60 Hz delivered intermittently in cycles of 10 min on and 5 min off. Acceleration was set at 49 m/s2 r.m.s. for all frequencies. Unanesthetized rats were restrained in cages on a nonvibrating platform with their tails placed on a vibrating stage driven by a B&K motor (4809). The sham control animals were also placed in the vibration apparatus but not vibrated. Room temperature was controlled at 25 ± 1°C. Ventral arteries from proximal tail segments 7 were immersion fixed in aldehydes, embedded in epon-araldite and sectioned (0.5 µm) for morphological analysis. Vascular lumen sizes were measured as the percent ratio of the lumen perimeter to internal elastic membrane length using Image J software (NIH). Operators of construction equipment perform various duties at work that expose them to a variety of risk factors that may lead to health problems. A few of the health hazards among operators of construction equipment are: (a) whole-body vibration, (b) awkward postural requirements (including static sitting), (c) dust, (d) noise, (e) temperature extremes, and (f) shift work. It has been suggested that operating engineers (OEs) are exposed to two important risk factors for the development of musculoskeletal disorders: whole-body vibration and non-neutral body postures. Method: This review evaluates selected papers that have studied exposure to whole-body vibration and awkward posture among operators of mobile equipment. There have been only few studies that have specifically examined exposure of these risk factors among operators of construction equipment. Thus other studies from related industry and equipment were reviewed as applicable. Conclusion: In order to better understand whole-body vibration and postural stress among OEs, it is recommended that future studies are needed in evaluating these risk factors among OEs.

Methane explosions have historically been one of the major causes of fatalities and injuries in underground coal mining operations. Advanced numerical models and predictive modeling approaches have the potential to offer optimized methane control solutions for general mine planning purposes and to address specific methane-related operational problems. This paper describes the development of reservoir models for the longwall mining environment and their application for investigating the influence of various completion design parameters on the methane drainage effectiveness of gob gas ventholes. The influence of increasing longwall panel width on the effectiveness of current gob gas venthole completion and placement strategies in the Pittsburgh Coalbed were evaluated and optimized designs developed to capture the expected increase in methane emissions on the larger panel.

Methane sensors using principle of catalytic oxidation of methane are employed for determination of methane content in ambient air of coal mines. Certain foreign gases or vapors in the air poison the catalyst of the sensor effecting the sensor's response. After literature search of poison compounds of Pt and Pd oxidation catalyst, experimental studies of catalyst poison kinetics were made for three siloxane compounds, tributyl-phosphate, monobromotrifluoromethane, and hydrogen sulfide, selected as poison vapors. Concentration range of the poison vapors was varied in a range from 3000 to 0.1 ppb (v/v). Three siloxane vapors produced strong catalyst poison effect, followed by tributylphosphate, hydrogen sulfide and monobromotrifluoromethane for the high concentration level of the poison vapors. The poison effects are influenced significantly by concentration of the vapors. Threshold poison vapor concentrations where effect of the poison vapors on the sensor is minimal were determined experimentally. Experimental studies were made further for prevention method of catalyst poison by adsorption techniques. Use of activated carbon cloth inserted on the sensor's head prevented catalyst poisoning efficiently.

The Approach: Development of a compact, lightweight apparatus which produces oxygen by using the wearer's breath in a chemical reaction. The coal-bearing regions of Colorado cover approximately 29,600 square miles, which is 28.4 percent of the state's total area. The most important coal-bearing regions are located in the north western and west-central parts of Colorado. Coal resources vary from lignite to anthracite. More than 70 percent are bituminous; 23 percent subbituminous; 5 percent lignite; and less than 1 percent anthracite. The state's coal reserves total about 17.2 billion tons, 3.5 percent of national reserves. Approximately 8.8 million acres of coal rights in the state are owned by the Federal Government; on about 72percent of this land, the Federal Government controls both the coal and the surface rights. It is estimated that approximately 4.2 billion tons of coal reserves are under federal ownership in Colorado. Permitted acreage of mines in Colorado ranges from 40 to 13,114 acres. Differences in elevation create many climatic zones in Colorado. Local annual precipitation can average less than eight inches in some areas in extreme western Colorado to more than 30 inches in certain mountainous areas. Generally, precipitation rates are low at most mine sites, making revegetation difficult. Colorado gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved December 15,1980. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 11, 1982.

The Siamese mining lew, which is cited as "The Sian Mining Act, 2461 (1919)," was enacted February 14, B. E. 2461 (A. D. 1919), corresponding to the ninth year of His Majesty's reign. This act replaces the Sian Mining Act of 1901 and repeals all edicts, decrees, laws, rules, and local customs relating to mining the terms of which are inconsistent with the new law. It shall in- clude all subsequent alterations or additions, as well as all rules issued by the Minister (of Land and Agriculture) already in force or to be brought into force publication in the Government Gazette to be deemed sufficient notice of any modifications or alterations. (Art. 1, 2, 5, 83, and 85.) Legislation passed recently amending certain provisions of the mining law for the purpose of controlling the sale of minerals is the mining amendment act, B. E. 2474, given August 21, 1931 (7th year of the present reign), which repeals provisions of the mining act, B. 3. 2461, and also all rules and regula- tions relating to mining that are inconsistent with the amending ect. Under article 25 of the mining amendment act, B. E. 2474, ministeriel regulations (of the Minister of Agriculture) were issued August 21, 1931. This Bureau of Mines report describes an investigation of factors influencing economic viability of a proposed system to mine and process manganese nodules. The system consists of hydraulic dredging and ammonia leach processing designed to recover three metals: nickel, copper, and cobalt. A ferromanganese recovery plant is a considered option. Annual capacity is 3 million dry metric tons (t) nodules. Aftertax rates of return (ROR's) of only 7.38 and 6.63 pct are predicted for three-and four-metal base scenarios, respectively. Sensitivity analyses indicate that variations in commodity prices, metal recoveries, and deposit grades produce similar incremental changes in ROR. Estimated cumulative effects of price variations are greatest. While three-metal operations generally yield higher predicted returns, potential increases in manganese price and process recovery could make four-metal operations most profitable. Maximum variations in both capital costs and three-metal operating costs result in ROR changes of about 25 pct. In contrast, four-metal ROR's exhibit variations to 70 pct. Even so only a best case analysis, utilizing favorable variations in all categories tested, generated ROR's approaching a level thought necessary to trigger company interest. Consequently, it is concluded that nodule mining will not take place in the foreseeable future without significant financial incentives.

Potash is one of the principal foods and is necessary for the growth of most vegetables, grains, and fruits. For many years, this country depended entirely upon foreign sources for its supply of potassium compounds. However, during the last 15 years the domestic production of potash has gradually increased, as shown in table 1. 7/ Imports now supply only half of the American market. In 1936, the equivalent of 207,000 tons of K20 was imported, and 210,000 tons was produced domestically. In 1935, domestic consumption was approximately 420,000 tons of potash, a 57 percent increase over that for 1934 and surpassing previous peaks of 1928 and 1930.

Under compuision of the present urgency to implement the President's promise to make the United States the arsenal for the democracies there is a tendency to demand a relaxation of restrictions on hours of labor and to speed up all industrial processes. The pressure is the more insistent with growing realization of the importance of the time factor in the success- ful prosecution of the war effort and the lack of skilled workers due to (2) operation of the draft, lack of an apprentice system in industry, and loss of skill by workers unemployed for long periods during the depression. With "total" war such as it is today the probabilities are that everyone will be required to exert greater effort (in many instances in activities to which they are unaccustomed) for longer periods than ever before has been necessary. The question arises, "What will be the aftereffects as well as the immediate effects on health, safety, and efficiency?" A review of the literature leaves the impression that this question has not been an- swered completely, especially as regards the ultimate effects. Mechanization, speeding up of industrial processes, mass produc- tion, and the small industrial concerns present many problems to indus- trial medicine. Does the tendency to expect the worker to produce at full speed all the time he is on the job decrease the effectiveness of the shorter working hours and cause undue fatigue, loss of efficiency, and increased accident proneness? The answer is important as this condition is likely to be intensified by the exigencies of the present emergency. According to Viteles (1)3, The increased tension under such conditions of work appears to offset the savings in muscular force made pos- sible by the machine. The tension, the speed, the subject- tion to specialization of work and a rhythm uncontrolled by the individual promote fatigue, characterized by a "decrease in the power to work, a decrease in pleasure taken in work, and a decrease in the enjoyment of the hours spent away from work."' The crowding of workers in temporary structures without proper provision for comfort and health may add greatly to the general fatigue factors already present in many industrial establishments. In 1932 Lockhart (2) stated that the production and maintenance of a healthy, satisfied industrial population is the most urgent necessity, involving problems so serious as to constitute a national task too great economically to be relegated to industrial concerns. If this was true in 1932, it must be doubly so today.

"INTRODUCTION The construction of frame houses (fig. 1) in recent years instead of the conventional sod hut (igloo) (fig. 2) by the Eskimos in the villages along the Arctic Ocean has increased the demand for fuel in these villages. The frame houses, which are not insulated against extreme cold and are difficult to heat, are equipped with Goal stoves. The well-insulated sod huts were heated comfortably with whale-oil stoves. In some years whaling is Door, consequently there is a demand for solid fuel.The Eskimo villages usually are on the sand spits at the mouths of rivers and points of land near the best fishing and hunting grounds. These narrow necks of land usually are sand bars that are not underlain with coal, and coal must be transported to the villages. Lack of development of coal deposits in the Arctic has made it necessary to import coal from the States, generally from 'Washington, to supply these villages. This coal is imported by boat and is received once a year. Its cost is, high, and development of coal deposits in the Arctic to supply these native villages should result in a considerable saving to the Government-operated schools and hospitals as well as to the natives.Early traders attempted to establish coaling stations in the Arctic, and the Eskimos generally know where the coal deposits are situated. A. reconnaissance of a number of deposits in the Arctic was made in the summer of 1946 by engineers of the Coal Division, Fuels and Explosives Branch, Bureau of Mines, and this report describes the areas investigated and suggests plans for the development of some of these deposits."

The Korean crisis and the cessation of Russian manganese-ore shipments to the United States in 1950 reemphasized the almost total dependence of the domestic steel industry on foreign supplies for metallurgical-grade manganese ore. In this emergency, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to undertake experimental mine and process development work on the known large reserves of low-grade manganese ore in the Artillery Mountains region in Mohave County, Ariz. The objective of the work was to obtain the basic mining and metallurgical data needed to make specific plans for initiating exploitation of the deposits within 3 years if high-grade foreign ore could not be obtained during the emergency. The manganese deposits of the Artillery Mountains region are in an area of about 25 square miles on the north side of the Bill Williams River in southern Mohave County. Lasky, of the Federal Geological Survey, has estimated reserves at 175 million tons of manganiferous material assaying 3.5 to 4 percent Mn. Although the man¬ganese occurs in various Tertiary and Quaternary formations as both bedded and fissure vein deposits, the more important syngenetic deposits are found in upper and lower manganiferous zones in the sedimentary beds of playa and alluvial fan origin that constitute the Chapin Wash formation.

As recently as 1915, helium was available only in very small quantities at a cost equivalent to $2,500 per cubic foot. It was a laboratory curiocity, and its properties were of interest to a limited number of scientists (11).3/ During the past 30 years, however, helium has grown from a plaything of scientists to a factor of importance in the prosecution of the recent war. Navy blimps filled with nonflammable helium proved to be more than a match for German submarines operating in the Atlantic. American bombers were able to fly unheard-of distances to drop bombs on Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokahama, and other Japanese cities because they had been made lighter with magnesium, arc-welded in a helium atmosphere. The Army utilized helium-filled radio-sonde balloons to obtain vital information concerning weather conditions affecting D-day invasions and other military maneuvers.

STATISTICS of injuries in the quarrying and related industries in the United States first became available when the Bureau of Mines collected reports from the operating companies for the calendar year 1911. Since then reports have been collected annually. The present bulletin, covering the calendar year 1952, is the 33d publication containing statistical data on injuries at quarries and related plants, and it is the first to be published since 1944. The last publication was Bulletin 458, Quarry Accidents in the United States during the Calendar Year 1942. The unpublished statistics for 1942-51 may be found in the Appendix of this bulletin. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to collect data on injuries at quarries, but there is no Federal law that compels operators to supply such data, and the reports received from operators are voluntary responses to the Bureau's requests for information. Although the figures presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry, every effort has been exerted to make them so, and the figures given are believed to be thoroughly representative of the hazards to which quarry workers are exposed. Moreover, the figures are com¬parable as between States -which is significant in view of the lack of uniformity among the States as regards classes of plants covered by State laws, classes of injuries covered by State reports, and other factors that tend to make it impracticable or impossible to compare the injury experience of one State with that of another or to comprehend the relative importance of the various causes of injuries in the industry as a whole.

This manual contains a step-by-step procedure for the design of ore passes for open pit mines. The manual is comprehensive and deals with all aspects including location, design, construction and operating considerations. In the construction section, all applicable raising and shaft sinking methods are considered and cost estimates and advance rates provided for each. The design process is divided into several sections - rock flow requirements, support design, dump point design and draw point design. Use of this manual provides open pit planning engineers with a means of designing and assessing the feasibility of ore passes for their operations.

"A. larger enrollment and a greater number of man-hours of employment by the enrolled companies were the outstanding features of the National Safety Competition of 1942, an annual safety contest conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, for the promotion of safety among workers in the mines and quarries of the United States. The accident-frequency and accident-severity rates were somewhat higher than in 1941, but the frequency of accidents in relation to the number of man-hours worked was strikingly lower than in the earlier years of the 18-year period during which the contests have been conducted.Companies that enroll in the National Safety Competition compete for a bronze trophy known as the ""Sentinels of Safety."" Six of these trophies are provided by THE EXPLOSIVES ENGINEER annually for award by the Bureau of Mines. The trophies for 1942 wore won by an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania, a lignite mine in North Dakota, an underground metal mine in Tennessee, a limestone mine in Ohio, an open-cut metal mine in Minnesota, and a lime-:tone quarry in Pennsylvania. The trophies are presented to the companies for 1 year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The contest rules state that a mine or quarry must have at least 25 men employed underground or in the pit for at least 100 days, and the plant must be in operation 30,000 or more man-hours to be eligible for a trophy. The rank of mines and quarries is determined by accident-severity rates, or, in the case of accident-free records, by the number of man-hours worked."

The United States has not begun commercial operations to tap its largest poten-tial sources of oil supply - oil shale and coal. The reason is that domestic petrol-eum has been plentiful in the past and liquid products probably could be produced from it at the lowest cost. In view of the ever-increasing need for petroleum in the United States, the critical international situation threatening foreign supplies, the growing demands for steel, and the heavy costs to industry of constantly discovering and developing new oil fields, it is believed that the prompt development of a synthetic fuel industry based on oil shale and coal is not only requisite to safeguard our oil supply but is an economically sound course for the foreseeable future. To neglect its development is to close our eyes and minds to our own resources at a time when they are needed critically. It also is apparent now that neither the Government nor industry would be taking any considerable economic risk in starting the initial plants, especially as measured against their potential value in meeting critical oil and chemical demands and in building a new industry in the West.

The mentor/learner model is a time-honored approach to teaching, including within the mining industry. Miners know when they see excellence and have a deep respect for experts in their field. By using expert miners as mentors to other, less-experienced miners, training programs can be developed that will have a legitimacy and credibility that resonates with those being trained. Building upon concepts in current theories of adult education, this paper highlights the unique advantages of using mentoring as a teaching method that can make the educational experience both interesting and effective. Current NIOSH safety training materials use these concepts to deliver effective adult learning experiences for workers in the mining industry.
