This Bureau of Mines report presents a brief summary of the explosion trends in United States coal mines for the past 160 years. These trends show that in spite of the overall improvements in mine safety, the number of fatalities from ignitions of methane has actually increased in recent years. Suggestions are made of procedures that can be utilized to reverse this trend.

This study was undertaken to determine miners' breathing zone concentrations of diesel exhaust components, to investigate any relationships between these concentrations and vehicle type, the presence of emission controls, vehicle usage, and ventilation conditions, and to make recommendations for monitoring and ventilation requirements. Twenty-four mines including two con l mines were surveyed. Sampling was done for CON, NON, SOx, PNA, aldehydes, and particulates. hi most mines, concentrations of at least one contaminant exceeded one half the standard or TLV. The concentrations of gases arc probably sufficiently reduced by a minimum air velocity of 50 fpm. A sufficient reduction of particulate concentrations may require as high as 400 fpm air velocity. Vehicle age, type, or usage appear to have little or no effect on contaminant concentrations. PNA levels were below detection limits in all but a very few samples. Minimum requirements for routine monitoring should include formaldehyde, COx, NO2. It is further recommended that better definition of the minimum ventilation requirement be obtained.

The solubility of 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane (TBE) in water was determined from 1.0° to 97.0° C. The solubility (S) of TBE in grams of solute per 100 grams water was correlated with [S = 1,920.55 [exp (40292L7 11, T2 10 T 737.577 + 9.923962 ] where T is in degrees Kelvin. A thermodynamic analysis conducted on a system consisting of a TBE phase and a water phase in equilibrium with a vapor phase led to the calculation of the activity coefficient, vapor-liquid equilibrium distribution coefficient, relative volatility, and heat of mixing for saturated solutions of TBE in water. Data required for these calculations were the solubility of TBE in water and the vapor pressures of TBE and water as a function of temperature.

A study to explore the potential of utilizing the transport time required to move coal miners to and from the working sections. Consideration was given to all forms of training and presentation media, taking into account such environmental factors as noise, dynamic interferences, visibility, physical constraints, and contaminants. Indications of managements? and workers' attitudes toward man-trip training were also assessed. The final product was a proposed prototype training system for man-trip training. Continual occupational exposure to vibrating hand tools can damage the neural, vascular and other soft tissues of the fingers. Rat tail models have been developed to investigate the biological responses of the tissues to vibration.1-2 However, the biodynamic response of the tail relative to that of the human fingers has not been characterized. The objective of this pilot study was to compare the transmissibilities of rat tails measured via a scanning laser vibrometer to those of human fingers gripping a handle. Methods In Part I of this experiment, four male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks old) were exposed to discrete 5g-rms sinusoids of 32, 63, 125, 160, 250, and 500 Hz. The rats were restrained in Broome-style restrainers with their tails constrained without compression to an exposure platform via elastic straps as shown in Figure 1. The platform was attached to a vertically vibrating shaker. The vibration was measured for the array of points shown in Figure 1 using a scanning laser vibrometer (Polytec) and the transmissibility calculated for each point on the tail relative to the reference points on the platform. In Part II, three male human subjects were exposed at the frequencies specified in Part I - with the addition of 1000 Hz - at a magnitude at the ANSI <0.5-hr limit up to 63 Hz, after which the acceleration was held constant at 5g-rms. The subjects gripped an instrumented handle at 20 N as shown in Figure 2. The transmissibility was calculated relative to the reference points on the handle. [ ]

A total of 17 mine gallery fire tests (23 including sub-tests) were completed during this report period (10/1/76 - 11/30/77), directed at identifying a hazardous timber-set fuel-loading in a mine passageway that is otherwise free of combustibles. Results of these initial tests show that the capability of a particular fuel loading for propagating a fire is dependent upon the imposed ventilation air velocity and the ignition intensity, although this dependency needs to be better defined. It is also apparent that care must be taken when relating gallery test fire behavior to actual mine fire behavior, because of the restrictive length of the gallery. Present data indicate that some modification to the instrumentation scheme may be advantageous before proceeding with future tests.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the separation of aluminum from copper dump leaching liquors using a supported liquid membrane. Aluminum was selectively transported through porous polypropylene impregnated with di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid in an aliphatic diluent. The effects of variables, such as solution composition, temperature, and extractant concentration, were measured with a three-level fractional factorial experimental design. Experimental results were used to derive equations for predicting transport rates for aluminum, iron, and copper. The major variables influencing aluminum transport were solution temperature, feed solution pH, aluminum concentration in the feed solution, and extractant concentration. Copper and iron transport rates were almost zero when aluminum transport rates were high. Measured aluminum transport rates under the best conditions of 55° C, pH 3.0, 16 g/L A13+, and 65 pct extractant solution confIrmed the predicted value of 210 f.&apos;g/(cm2.h). Transport rates for iron and copper were less than 5 ug/(cm2.h) under these conditions. Aluminum was recovered from the stripping solutions by sparging with gaseous hydrogen chloride to crystallize aluminum chloride hexahydrate, which was calcined to alumina. Sparging crystallization regenerated the stripping acid for recycle.

"INTRODUCTION Clay beds of southwestern North Dakota were investigated to determine (1) the average alumina content of the clays in four principal areas of occurrence, (2.) which, if any, would be the most feasible method of extracting alumina from the clays, and (3) whether the clays had any other commercial uses.During the investigation exposed sedimentary beds were examined for clay and the thickness and areal extent of outcropping clay beds in the more promising areas were measured. Four-principal areas of bentonitic clays, comprising 6,967 acres in Stark, Slope; and Billings Counties, N. "The general location of the Kentucky, Fluorspar District and the Moore Hill fault area are shown in figure 1. An engineer3/ the Bureau of Mines visited the district in July 1942 and reported on the Moore Hill fault system. Subsequently the Bureau explored the Summers, Pepperbox, McCune, Eagle-Watson, Henry Watson, Davenport, Felix Tyner, and Eagle-Wring prop¬erties by core drilling. These properties and the principal faults are shown on figures 2 and 3.Collaboration of the Federal Geological Survey4/ was of great benefit, particularly in mapping the properties, determining the stratigraphy, and furnishing information on that and other geologic factors.Fluorite was noted as early as 1818 near Shawneetown in southern Illinois.5/ In 1835 an attempt was made to work deposit in Crittenden County, Kentucky, but interest centered chiefly upon the galena found with the fluorite. The first shipments of fluorspar from Kentucky wore made in 1373 from the Yandell mine of Crittendon County.6/ It is not known when the first work on the Moore Hill fault was done, but it seems probable that the Cullen-Eagle and Nancy Hanks were being ,worked in 1900. Gravel spar was found on the surface at the Two Brothers mine in 1904,7/ and the main shaft was started in 1914; work also began at .the Davenport in 1914, and in 1917 the Eagle-Watson was in production. A shaft was gunk on the Pepperbox in 1918, and in 1922 fluorspar was found and work was started on the Summers property. In 1924 work began at the McCune, Felix Tyner, Eagle-Wring, and probably the Hicks properties.No Good approximate record of production from each property on the Moore Hill fault system is obtainable, but an estimate based upon all data available is as follows:"

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Coouncil (CRC) 4/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows:Regular-price, 1,958 samples, 317 items, and 96 brands; premium-price, 1, samples, 292 items, and 85 brands; third-grade, 58 samples, 22 items, and 14 brands. [In many coal-mining countries, during he pest decade, there have seen made extended studies and accurate measurement of movement of roof strata, tests of the physical properties of specimens cut therefrom, and tests of the strength of end load on artificial supports. Naturally, such studies have been more extensive in European countries, where mining conditions are less favorable than in the United States. As a part of its work in the conservation of coal resource and prevention of accidants in mines, the Bureau of brines began systematic measurements of the movement of roof strata to in coal mines in the fall of 1935. It was decided- that, in the beginning, work on a rapidly retreating rib line in a mechanized mine would give the greatest amount of information in a reasonable time. To this end w cooperative tine agreement was made with the Pittsburgh Coal Co., through Dr. L. E. Young, vice: president in charge of operations, for conduct of work in that company&apos;s Montour 10 mine operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed. This paper gives an account of the methods used in the investigation, excerpts from the data obtained, and such generalizations as appear to be justified.]

In the interest of safety in mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That cages or skips used for hoisting or lowering men in vertical and steeply inclined shafts shall be provided with safety catches designed to prevent falling of the cage or skip if the hoisting rope or other connections break; and 2. That cars used. for hoisting or lowering men with ropes in slopes shall be provided with arresting devices, other than ordinary brakes, that come into action if the hoisting rope or other connections break. In presenting this decision, it is recognized that the principal requirements for safety in hoisting operations are the use of hoisting ropes of ample size and strength to provide a factor of safety recognized as adequate by the best en engineering practice; their proper care, protection against undue wear and corrosion, and frequent inspection; and immediate removal of ropes from service when inspection or tests cast doubt upon their further safe serviceability.

A mineral resource evaluation of the Coyote-Southeast RARE II area (No. 5033) was performed jointly by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey in 1981 for the U.S. Forest Service RARE II program. Bureau of Mines personnel conducted a mineral resource inventory of the study area&apos;s mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized outcrops. The study area&apos;s boundaries encompass 51,700 acres on the east flank of the Sierra Nevada and are within Inyo National Forest southeast of the city of Bishop in east-central California. Cretaceous granite underlies most of the area; the remainder of the rocks are metasedimentary. At the contact of the two, tactites formed at many places where carbonate rocks were present; replacement processes produced local scheelite (calcium tungstate) occurrences.

This report describes the results of a four year investigation into improved face ventilation systems for underground coal mines. The objective was to experimentally determine configurations for a diffuser fan system and a water spray (spray fan) system which will provide a maximum reduction in face methane concentrations without causing an increase in methane concentrations at the operator&apos;s position. The experimental evaluation was performed in full scale mock-up mine entries, simulating continuous mining operations in both a six foot and four foot coal seam complete with normal ventilation, water sprays, and methane emission. A limited study was also performed to assess the effect of scrubber discharge location on methane concentrations in the face area. The results indicated that diffuser fan and spray fan systems that were designed to augment the natural airflow pattern in the entry could provide a factor of 3 to 5 reduction in average methane concentration at the face, compared to a mining machine with just conventional water sprays. The properly designed diffuser and spray fan systems also significantly reduced the total methane present in the entry. A properly designed dust scrubber discharge can reduce face methane levels by a factor of two.

This report describes the operation and maintenance of the Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. Seals are emplaced in mine passageways between the fire zone and the rest of the mine isolating the fire zone from the mine. The seals consist of fly ash that has been pneumatically conveyed via inert gas through a borehole connecting the surface and the passageway, Inert gas is used as the fly ash seal transport medium (instead of fresh air) since the introduction of large volumes of fresh air in the vicinity of the fire zone would be undesirable. The inert gas generation equipment is mounted on two flatbed trailers, the "hot" trailer and the "cold" trailer. The hot trailer contains the combustion and cooling equipment. The cold trailer contains the moisture removal and compression equipment necessary to convey the fly ash. The system is self-sufficient and requires only fuel and fly ash deliveries. The Inert Gas Generator has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hr. The system was employed in the demonstration of the entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the Fall of 1978. The system is currently available for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

Mine drainage and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, federal and local governments, and the general public. This publication and its companion three volumes are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 24-29, 1994. There were twelve sessions (69 papers) that dealt with mine drainage, including modeling, geochemistry, prediction, treatment, control strategies, characterization, hydrology, and case studies. These sessions comprise volumes 1 and 2. The six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with reclamation and revegetation of disturbed lands are included in volume 3. Volume 4 includes the six sessions (34 papers) that dealt with such topical issues as fires at abandoned mine sites, subsidence, hydrology, mine wastes, and policy. Poster session presentations are represented by 49 papers and 92 abstracts that have been placed in the back of volumes 2, 3, and 4, consistent with the subject of that volume.

An investigation is made into whether commercially available equipment can be used to engineer effective emergency warning systems for underground coal mines. Discussions with members of the Bureau and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration established that the preferred system should operate over the existing Pager Phone twisted pair, and broadcast an audio alarm. Applicable equipments such as voice band tone signaling equipment, alarm sounding equipment, mine telephones and complete alarm systems from over thirty manufacturers are listed. Factors affecting the range over which an alarm could be detected in representative mine situations were studied. These included (a) the subjective masking effects of typical background noise found in mines, such as that due to continuous miners (b) the attenuation of sound in mines (using both a theoretical and experimental results) and (c) the attention-getting qualities of different sound for miners. Audio alarm systems meeting the requirements can be installed and representative systems are described.
