The 1990s brought an unprecedented increase in the development of innovative technologies to provide more effective and easier-to-install roof support in underground mines. To facilitate the application of these technologies in improving mine safety, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP). STOP is a Windows-based software program that provides mine operators with a simple and practical tool to make engineering decisions about the selection and placement of these various roof support technologies. The program includes a complete database of the support characteristics and loading profiles obtained through safety performance testing of these supports at the NIOSH Safety Structures Testing Laboratory. A support design criterion in the form of the required support load density at a specified convergence can be established from four options: (1) a database of measured ground reaction obtained from various mines or ground behavior information input by the user,(2) load requirements based on a detached roof block or rock failure height, (3) criteria based on the current roof support system, and/or (4) arbitrary criteria set by the user. Using these design criteria, the program will determine the installation requirements for a particular support technology that will provide the necessary support load density and convergence control. Optimization routines are also available to determine the most efficient support design for a user-specified support installation. In addition to these performance measures, STOP can be used to compare material handling requirements and installation costs. Comparisons among the various support technologies are easily made, including a graphical analysis of relevant support parameters. This paper describes STOP and its application to optimizing standing secondary roof support systems.

Four bit designs, two conical and two radial, were tested in coal against a 60° conical reference bit to obtain data on orthogonal cutting forces and primary respirable dust generation. One conical and one radial design were modified by the Bureau of Mines for these tests. Results were mixed: One radial bit used substantially lower overall cutting forces and specific energy than the other bits and was the only cutter lower on energy and most forces than the standard 60° bit. How-ever, it generated more specific and total dust than any other bit. The four bits were also tested for incendivity, with a 90° plumb-bob bit as the reference. The frictional ignition tests were designed to simulate both trimming top rock and cutting such rock during advance on-sump. Results of these tests were also mixed. The radial bits were substantially less incendive than the reference bit and caused no ignitions in either top trimming or sump modes. Only the modified mushroom-tipped conical bit caused ignitions. Bits similar to this modified design should not be used on drum-type miners in gassy mine areas; in-stead, the other types of bits tested should be used to reduce ignition potential to a minimum.

The Bureau of Mines reviewed the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) literature of the group IVB, VB, and VIR elements. This review was utilized in the Bureau's research to provide erosion-, abrasion-, and corrosion-resistant coatings for valve components used in coal gasification units. This report attempts to bring together the many CVD references that have been published since 1966. Each of the group IVB, VB, and VLB metal coatings were reviewed, and some of their preparation methods, uses, and properties are given. A total of 160 references were found for the nine elements. Isotope separation, stronger steels, solar absorbers, alloys, superconductors, optical fibers, and coatings to increase the life of materials are some of the new uses for CVD.

Sample results suggest the only mineral resources in the study areas are placer gold deposits along the South Fork Kern River in the Woodpecker RARE II unit (fig. 1). These deposits, in Rockhouse Basin, total 4.5 Figure 1.--NEAR HERE. million cu yds (3.4 million cu m) of indicated subeconomic gold resources in four deposits of "older" gravel. Gold value in samples averages $0.36 per cu yd ($0.47 par cu m) and is as much as $4.44 per cu yd 1/. Cost of mining the gravel and recovering the placer gold is estimated to be more than $2 per cu yd ($2.62 per cu m) for a deposit of this size and type. Additional inferred subeconomic placer gold resources with similar grade probably occur in four other deposits of "older" gravel on which no mining claims were located. Placer gold occurrences on upper Trout Creek contain gold worth as much as $4.50 per cu yd ($5.88 per cu m) 1/. Average grade is much lower, and only about 1,000 cu yds remain (760 cu m). These occurrences do not constitute a resource, but may attract hobbyists not dependent upon making a profit.

No minerals have been produced from the McGraw Creek RARE II area. During the 1982 U.S. Bureau of Mines study, there were no active mines in the area. Limestone occurrences (fig. 1, no. 2), four copper prospects (fig. 1, no. 1, 4, 5, 6), and a prospect with no significant mineral values (fig. 1, no. 3) were examined. A moderate potential for high-calcium limestone resources was estimated between ocurrences within the study area near McGraw and Spring Creeks (fig. 1, no. 2). There is low potential for copper resources at the Argenta Prospect (fig. 1., no. 1) in the study area, and the McDougall Prospect adjacent to the area.

This report examines the feasibility of Employee Assistance Plans for the coal industry. Three issues are examined in detail. First, the prevalence of off-the-job factors such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and marital problems are examined in a sample of miners from the eastern, midwestern, and western underground coal fields. Then data were presented that examined the link between these off-the-job factors and behaviors critical to the mines such as absenteeism and turnover. Lastly, we examined the effectiveness of the major Employee Assistance Program in underground coal mining--the HELP Program. The report contains recommendations on whether coal mining companies should implement these programs and how these programs should be designed.

Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

Coal mines and mining-, as well as metal and nonmetallic mines and min¬ing, are not inherently unsafe, although mining people think they are and would like to have everyone else think so. It is now being demonstrated that mines can be operated with essentially as much safety as any other major industrial enterprise; but most mining people, including workers as well as officials, have been slow to realize or admit this. In the past, and with most people even at present, the idea has prevailed that it is utterly impossible to operate a mine without accidents. Although, as in all other kinds of industrial activity, it is true that some injury is likely on occasion to occur to some workers and an extraordinary accident may occur to one or more persons under exceptional conditions, mines can be operated with few if any accidents if a reasonable amount of the right kind of precautionary effort is exerted and kept in effect.

A mineral survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1983 identified no mineral resources in the Beaver Meadows, Blind Horse Creek, Chute Mountain, Deep Creek/Battle Creek, and North Fork of Sun River Wilderness Study Areas (WSA's). A prospect east of the Beaver Meadows WSA has low potential for lead resources. Sand, gravel, and limestone occurrences are numerous in the WSA's; however, similar or better quality materials outside the areas are abundant and more accessible to potential markets. Impure coal and titaniferous-magnetite occurrences are near the WSA's, but are not known to occur within these areas. In 1983, there were 7,025 acres leased for oil and gas within the five WSA's; no current mining claims were in or near any of the WSA's. Evidence of mining activity was found at only one prospect in the WSA's. It is inside the Deep Creek/Battle Creek WSA; no resources or resource potential were identified at this prospect.

"Previous investigations, too numerous to be listed in entirety, have been performed to determine the physical properties of rock. When considered according to their objectives, most of these investigations can be grouped as follows: First, the geologic group (1,2),4/ in which the purpose was to obtain information on the physical properties of the rocks that make up the earth's crust. Particular emphasis has been placed on the determination of the elastic constants--that is, Young's modulus, the modules of rigidity, and Poisson's ratio – as these quantities determine the propagation characteristics of seismic waves. Second, the structural properties group (3 - 11), in which the physical properties of architectural or monumental stone, concrete and aggregate rock, road blocks (cobblestone), and the like were desired. The tests have been quite general and include, besides the elastic properties; the compressive and tensile strength, and the toughness, hardness, and weathering properties of many types of rocks.To .a lesser degree, investigations have been carried out to determine the physical properties of mine rock. A few reports (12 - 14) present data on the crushability and grindability of mine rock, and a large number of papers discuss grinding and crushing procedures and methods of analyzing the data (for example, see references 15 - 17). Some of the latter group also have given the results of tests on mine rock; however, comparatively few include an adequate petrographic description or information on other physical properties of the rock. A few papers,(18 - 22) have reported studies of the strength of rock specimens in respect to the strength of parts of mine structures, such as pillars, roof, arches, etc. Other papers (23 - 26) have discussed investigations on such subjects as primary and secondary crushing, diamond and pneumatic rock drilling, explosive breaking and shattering of rock, rate of drifting and miring, and other allied problems. The majority of these reports have given no more than a cursory, description of the rocks and have included no statement regarding the physical properties. When statements have been given regarding the physical properties, they have usually referred only to isolated tests, making correlations between variations in the physical properties and variations in the .test under consideration difficult, if not impossible. Some reports have included handbook values on such characteristics as the crushing strength, hardness, and toughness. This practice is not satisfactory, because these values are usually given for col¬lective types of rocks, such as granites, limestones, and marbles, and it is known that the variations of the physical properties within these groups is often larger than the differences between the groups."

Research was conducted to investigate how ventilation of a mining face is affected when scrubber flow is greater or less than intake flow. Tests were conducted in a full-scale surface test gallery built to simulate a mining entry with a continuous mining ma- chine at the face. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face. Gas measurements taken at six locations near the face were used to evaluate how well the face was being ventilated. Increasing scrubber flow resulted in lower methane levels even when scrubber flow was much greater than intake flow.

[An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. In conjunction with the Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation in 1981 and 1982 of the Santa Rosa Mountains Wilderness Study Area (WSA), Riverside County, California. The Bureau of Mines is responsible for the mineral survey of mines, prospects, and mineralized areas in and near the WSA. A literature search was completed to obtain information concerning mineral occurrences and mining activity that relate to the WSA. A field investigation inside, and up to 1 mi outside, the boundary of the WSA, disclosed one prospect. This prospect was surveyed by compass and tape, and five samples were taken to determine the representative mineral content. No attempt was made to expose concealed mineralization or to re-open caved workings. All five samples were analyzed by fire assay for gold and silver and by colorimetric methods for tungsten. Two of the samples were analyzed by semi quantitative spectrographic methods to determine if any unsuspected elements were present. All analyses are furnished in this report except for the semi-quantitative spectrograhic analyses. Complete sample analyses are available for public inspection at the Bureau of Mines, Intermountain Field Operations Center, Building 20, Denver Federal Center, Denver, CO 80225.

The principal objectives of this study are to: (1) survey electrical practices in metal and non-metal mines, (2) survey electrical practices in metal and non-metal mills, (3) clarify the federal regulations governing electrical practices in metal and non-metal mines/mills, (4) analyze electrical accidents, and (5) make recommendations aimed at improvement of the safety of electrical practices in metal and non-metal mines. Information was obtained from literature searches, accident reports, visits to 27 mines and 12 mills, and discussions with knowledgeable industry and government people. The various electrical power systems and practices at the mines and mills visited are described. Similarities and differences based on the type of mining and the minerals being mined or milled are presented. The federal regulations governing metal/non-metal mine/mill electrical practices (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Sections 55.12, 56.12, and 57.12) are presented and discussed. Explanations of each regulation are provided in an appendix. The attitudes of mine/mill operators towards the federal regulations are described. An analysis of the electrical accidents in metal/non-metal mines and mills during the period 1972-1978 is presented. Recommendations, including specific research and development activities, aimed at improvement of electrical safety in metal/non-metal mines are submitted.

"The Bureau of Mines in Serial No. 2606,4 issued in May, 1924, gave tentative specifications for rock-dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines. Subsequently, a sectional committee of the American Engineering Standards Committee was appointed to formulate recommendations for standard practice in rock-dusting coal mines. The report of this Committee which follows was approved by the American Engineering Standards Committee, December 30, 1925. Several members of the Bureau of Mines staff served on this Sectional Committee and its recommendations are essentially in harmony with those of the Tentative Specifications in Serial No. 2606.As certain explanatory details contained in that serial are not included in the recommendations formulated by the American Engineering Standards Committee, it should be considered by coal-mine managements in conjunction with the committee's report which follows:Recommended American Practice for Rock-Dusting Coal Mines to Prevent Coal-Dust Explosions 1. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources and potential of deposits in the Bucks Lake and Chips Creek RARE II areas in Plumas and Butte Counties, California. These areas lie along the west slope of the Sierra Nevada on opposite sides of the North Fork Feather River and encompass an area of 62,800 acres (25,400 ha). Metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Pennsylvanian Calaveras Formation are intruded by plutons of Mesozoic age. Mineral; of economic iterest are in quartz veins in metasediments close to these plutons; they are principally gold and silver with minor amounts of copper, lead, and zinc minerals. Molybdenum, copper, silver, and tungsten minerals occur in tactite along metasedimentary-granitic rock contacts. In both areas, auriferous Tertiary channel gravels have been extensively developed. Asbestos occurs in ultramafic rocks in both areas, and a limestone deposit was explored in the Chips Creek area. Gold is the principal economic mineral in the Bucks Lake RARE II area. The Shenandoah Mine (fig. 1, no. 19) contains 7,500 tons (6,800 t) of indicated and inferred subeconomic gold resources in sulfide-bearing, silicified metamorphic rocks of the Calaveras Formation (table 1). Similar rocks have yielded gold at the Edman and Megowen Mines, adjacent to the area. A high potential exists for additional lode resources in the area around the Shenandoah Mine. Callahan Mining Corporation personnel believe a multi-million ton disseminated gold deposit underlies the property.

This report summarizes the results and conclusions reached by various investigators who have attempted to determine the extent to which hydraulic fracturing will affect the secondary recovery of crude oil by waterflooding. It also discusses the most advantageous use of this well-stimulation method in waterflood projects. A thorough search of the literature was made, and pertinent information was abstracted from appropriate reports. A carefully designed and controlled program of formation fracturing is an effective aid in waterflooding because it increases water-injection and oil- production rates. Generally, fracturing has resulted in little or no reduction in ultimate oil recovery, but under certain circumstances recovery has been substantially increased.

Microflotation and surface chemical studies were conducted on a chromite from the Stillwater Complex in Montana and on some of the minerals usually found to be associated with such chromites. Considering the chromite it was found that aging the ground mineral in air or heating it markedly affected its flotation behavior. Much of the observed effects could be attributed to oxidation reactions involving surface chromium and iron species. Strongly acid pretreating the mineral appeared to reverse such effects. Thus, it can be concluded that the manner in which the mineral (or the ore) is pretreated is of utmost importance in its flotation. Work carried out on associated gangue minerals determined how they are likely to behave in a flotation environment and how certain foreign ions derived from a chromite ore itself can affect their surface characteristics and, thus, presumably also their behavior in a flotation circuit.
