Structural alteration of pyrophyllite during mechanical activation in a planetary mill was investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Mechanochemical effect markedly promotes the decrease in reflection intensities with increasing the grinding time. Prolonged grinding causes the pyrophyllite to become the amorphous structure. It can be indicated that pyrophyllite is very susceptible to alteration by grinding. Crystal size (d006) of pyrophyllite appears to be a limit after 2h grinding. IR spectroscopy analysis shows a little alteration in the bands of pyrophyllite after mechanical activation. The results indicate that the ordered structure of pyrophyllite is destroyed and lattice deformation occurs. Porous silica was then successfully prepared via leaching the mechanically activated pyrophyllite. Pyrophyllite was first ground for 6 h. Ground samples were subsequently leached with 4 M hy-drochloric acid at 80 °C for 2 h to produce porous silica with specific surface area of 188.1 m2/g, total pore volume of 0.18 mL/g and average pore size of 3.9 nm from N2 adsorption analysis. Otherwise, the porous silica obtained from direct leaching of the original pyrophyllite only has a specific surface area of 4.3 m adsorption analysis. 2/g and total pore volume of 0.03 mL/g. It is inferred that grinding is favorable for the formation of microstructure pores. It offers a simple and convenient route for the preparation of porous materials from natural minerals.

A new short combined flow sheet including high intensity magnetic separation and flotation for a rare earth ore in Maoniuping deposit, China has been investigated. Massive conclusive results demonstrate, that it is critical to separate the ore by high intensity magnetic separation prior to flotation for tons of slimes and nonmagnetic gangue existing. The vital technological parameters affecting flotation have been studied in detail. Modified hydroxamic acid is an efficient collector for bastnasite flotation because of its high selectivity. Flotation results also indicate high temperature that play an unfavourable role on the recovery as well as the grade of bastnasite concentrate, when the rare earth ore is floated with modified hydroxamic acid and sodium silicate depressant. Bastnasite concentrates, averaging over 65 percent REO at an overall recovery of 82-84% is achieved by the new beneficiation technology. About 90% of the barytes produced the world over is used for oil and gas drilling as weighting agent in drilling mud to control pressure, prevent blow out and provide lubrication. This is because of its unique properties like high specific gravity, water insolubility and intentness. India is one of the leading producers and exporters of barites. The Mangampeth Baryte deposit in Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh, India being the largest single deposit in the world having a reserves of about 80 million tonnes. Approximately 50% of the total reserves of grey barites of Mangampet deposit assays less than 92% BaSO4, the minimum stipulated grade for oil and gas drilling industries. To reach and recover the high grade barite, the overlying low grade has necessarily to be mined out and removed. At present this is being stacked separately at the mine site involving lot of labour and transport cost. Considerable barites is contained in the dumps adversely affecting the conservation and creating lot of environmental hazards. IBM being the premier organization in India in the field of conservation of minerals and environmental protection in mining has recognized the importance of adverse effect of these huge dumps at site. The Ore Dressing Division of IBM, Nagpur has characterized these dumps and developed the flotation process on a sample assaying 66% BaSO4 and 23.3% SiO2. The flotation concentrate obtained assayed 93.7% BaSO4, 2.38% SiO2 with BaSO4 recovery of 80% and meets the requirement of the oil industry. The flotation concentrate being non-wetable, can not be used as such as weighting agent, and hence the collector coating on the concentrate was removed either by acid treatment or heating to make it water wetable. The concentrate was 92% -325 mesh and having a specific gravity 4.3. The barites concentrates so produced meets the size, grade and specific gravity specifications required for use in oil drilling industry. Apart from the financial benefits the process augurs well for the commercial exploitation of these huge dumps in terms of (1) additional recovery of these valuable minerals and conservation, (2) reduction in dumps value, (3) improvement in environment and offering an excellent potential for export.

In order to produce the iron and steel products with high quality and decrease the output of steel tailings, the quality of molten iron is a critical factor for iron and steel companies, especially the content of sulfidic in molten iron. Hot metal pre-treatment, an important and effective method to desulphur, is widely used in steel production. Millions of tons of slag from desulphurization and slag skimming are produced each year in China, and many more times this amount is stored in slag dams because of the lack of effective means to deal with it. In order to achieve the goal of sustain-able development, recycling these slag becomes necessary. The main objective of this paper is to study the composition characteristics of slag that from desulphurization and slag skimming. The sample was obtained from Anshan Iron and Steel Group Corporation, processed by hot metal pre-treatment. In this study, the chemical components and the mineral compositions of sample were tested. The results of chemical components and iron chemistry phase analysis showed that the iron and sulphide content in this sample were high, and the iron products existed mainly in the form of magnetite, metallic iron, ferrosilite. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) results indicated that the sample included metallic iron, ferrate, wustite, metasilicate, aluminate, aluminosilicate, white lime and soon. Grading magnetic separation test work showed that magnetic separation was an effective method to recovery iron products and decrease the sulphide content in concentrate, and the tailing could be used as the raw material or padding in cement production.

In the bauxite flotation process for desilication, the middling treatment mode is the important factor to raise the flotation recovery of the preparation concentrate. The middling treatment mode mainly depends on A/S and the size composition. However, similar ratio of A/S should not be the single factor of re-dressing, size composition plays an important role also. Re-dressing the middling mixed with the tailings of concentrated to the rough ground for desilication and the concentrate of scavenged to the fine ground for desilication to raise the recovery of 5.83%, when compared two flow sheet schemes.

"Recent improvements in the resolution of X-ray computed tomography (CT) make it a promising alternative to traditional time consuming, error prone laboratory procedures for mineral liberation analysis, such as heavy liquid fractioning and measurements on polished sections. All indications are that in a few years CT will be well-established in many laboratories as a rapid technique for accurate liberation studies. In this scenario it would be able to provide liberation spectra or washability data in tens of minutes following sampling. However, although CT is a fast evolving technology, its on-line application is unlikely in the foreseeable future.Dual-energy (DE) radiography is another X-ray technique originating from non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and medical fields, which allows retrieval of the volumetric content of valuable components from two-phase particles in a fraction of second. Two radiographic images at different X-ray energies of a single particle or a monolayer of particles are taken in short time sequence. The thickness of the two phases is calculated particle by particle by image subtraction, whereupon particle grades can be derived. The development of the method for on-line applications requires the presentation of non-overlapping particles in the gap in the X-ray source detector measurement couple. Straightforward extension of the principle to multiphase systems is not possible. The paper reviews the state of the art of these two techniques as applied to mineral liberation problems."

The main purpose of present study was to characterize the dissolution of uranium from low-grade black shale with indigenous isolated strain of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (BSAF-01). The nature of shale is quartzite-schistose and contains uranium content of 0.005% U3O8 (50 ppm U3O8). Uranium is present in the tetravalent oxidation state (U4+) in the shale matrix. The main minerals identified are graphite, quartz, pyrite, mica minerals (phlogopite, biotite, sericite, and chlorite), microcline, K-feldspar and kerogen (hydrocarbon-compounds). Bacterial oxidation of pyrite was an acid-generating system and produced sulfuric acid and ferric sulfate during this biological phenomenon. A series of bioleaching experiments were conducted in shake flasks for leaching of uranium from black shale. The leaching experiments were performed at 50% pulp density using indigenous Fe- and S-oxidizing bacterium (Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans). Bioleaching data revealed that about 90% ~ 95% U3O8 was leached out from black shale ore. Uranium dissolution from shale depends on pH (pH 1.5~1.9), redox potential (=500 mev) and the concentration of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions in the leaching environment. The oxidative leaching of U4+ involves a redox reaction with Fe3+ as an oxidant and bacterial re-oxidation of Fe2+ in acidic leaching environment. Uranium leaching efficiency was attributed to the sulfuric acid and ferric sulfate production during bacterial oxidation of pyrite.

"In Russia, 1.1 million tons of mercury-containing waste are stored. The amount of mercury in soils and heaps of industrial enterprises is estimated at 3000 tons; in dumps, concentration tailings, sludge dumps of the gold mining industry up to 6000 tons have been accumulated. Mining is one of the main sources of mercury emissions in the natural environment that poses a real threat to the natural environment. At present, the process of amalgamation is prohibited and not applied in gold extraction. The application of amalgam technology in gold mining led to the accumulation of highly toxic products in the form of gold-bearing amalgam and metallic mercury, with a mercury content of dozens and even hundreds of times greater than the maximum permissible concentration for soil (1). Therefore, mercury-containing tailings constitute an ecological hazard to the environment. According to published data, at waste storage sites of industrial enterprises, up to 50 tons of mercury enter soil annually, and up to 3.5 tons pollute the air. At the same time, mercury-containing waste due to the reduction of the country's mineral resources is an additional source of mercury. Therefore, it is necessary to recycle mercury-containing waste. INTRODUCTION Paperobjective: demercurization of technogenic raw materials (amalgamation tails, discharge outlets of tailing dumps) to be recycled. Under natural conditions, the mercury usually migrates in the form of three most common compounds: elementary mercury (Hg); mercuric mercury ion (Hg+2); methylmercuryion (Hg (CH3) +. Chemical compounds Hg (II) are found in natural conditions much more often than Hg (I).The authors propose to conduct demercurization of technogenic raw materials (mercurial tailings) in two stages. At the first stage, the mercury in the form of small balls, the finest particles (drip mercury) can be extracted by applying the gravitational method. We propose a method for centrifugal processing of crushed waste in the apparatus of Itomak company, Novosibirsk, as the basis of the technological process for mercury recycling. The extraction of metallic mercury out of mercury-containing waste into commercial products, according to the technological characteristics of the Itomak apparatus, reaches 86.0% (2, 3). At the second stage, the extraction of mercury out of technogenic raw materials is performed applying a sorption method and using carbon sorbents based on fossil coals. Hard coal of the Kuznetsk Basin has been already used for industrial production of active carbons (carbon sorbents) of the KAD-iodine type, which is one of the prerequisites that determine the choice to use it for the aims of this study."

Copper concentrate containing complex sulphides of Cu-Ni with 14.13% Cu and 10.04% Ni besides impurities such as 0.33% Co and 0.71% Mo, is not acceptable to the copper smelters due to the smelting problems. Selective bioleaching of nickel from the concentrate can be considered an an option to make it suitable for copper smelter. Effect of elemental sulphur and pyrite on the bioleaching of Ni and Co has been investigated using a mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A.f.) and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A.t.). Parameters such as pH, temperature, particles, size etc. were optimised to understand the role of additives in the bioleaching. With 2% S at 308K, 2.0 pH, 5% pulp density and 200µm size particles while shaking at 100 rpm, 79% Ni, 41% Co and 5% Cu were bioleached as compared to the leaching of 81% Ni and 45% Co in presence of 10 wt% pyrite in 60 days; 27% Ni, 24% Co and 4% Cu were recovered in sterile experiment. The selective dissolution of nickel and cobalt as compared to copper may be explained by galvanic interaction between chalcopyrite: pentlandite / pyrrhotite. Bioleaching was facilitated by strong oxidizing conditions due to higher Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio/redox potential (ESCE) as a result of improved interaction of minerals through biooxidation of sulphur and accelerated galvanic interaction by pyrite. The mechanism of selective leaching of Ni and Co was established by XRD phase identification.

Reverse froth flotation experiments were carried out in the laboratory using two different types of kaolins for the separation and removal of coloring titanoferrous impurities from cryo-filtered clay after subjecting to high shear pre-treatment. This high shear pre-treatment consists of high shear agitation of a high solids clay slurry with the dispersant (high shear dispersion, HSD) followed by high shear agitation with the collector (high shear conditioning, HSC). After this pretreatment, the slurry is diluted and reverse flotation is carried out. One sample is from, Gujarat, India (Mamuara clay, ?MC?) while the 2nd sample is from Amberg, Germany (AKW clay, ?AC?). While MC consisted of 89% particles below 2µm and analyzed 1.06% of TiO2 and 0.29% Fe2O3 and measured a brightness of 83.4 %ISO, the corresponding values for AC are 67% below 2µm, 0.3% of TiO2? 0.49% Fe2O3 and 83.4 %ISO. The flotation performance is found to be greatly influenced by the conditions of high shear treatment. Important variables are HSD intensity (rpm), HSD time, HSC intensity (rpm), HSC time, HSD/HSC time ratio, ?HSD+HSC? total time etc. Higher shear intensities favor both the impurity liberation and collection. For both clays, it could be shown that impurity removal increases as total pretreatment time (?HSD +HSC? total time) increases up to a certain limit. For MC, the HSD time was only half or less than that of HSC time, while for AC, HSD time is at least twice (or more) than HSC time which is just an opposite manifestation. This is believed to be due to the striking differences between these two clays. Most importantly, the shear frequency is found more influential than the shear rate for the overall flotation performance for both clays. Interestingly, at high shear frequencies, i.e., when a stirrer with more number of teeth on the rotor is used, the ?HSD+HSC? total time is greatly reduced. Again, increased shear frequency helps to reduce flotation time and significantly improves flotation performance. At optimum conditions, product titania reduced to 0.35% for MC whereas the same reduced to 0.13% for AC. The product of flotation of MC measured 85%ISO brightness while that of AC measured84.6%ISO thus enhancing the value of the final product. It could also be established that the high shear pre-treatment shows better flotation performance than that due to collector dosage. "Based on PMA polymer, two kinds of novel macromolecular depressants, PMTA and PMA-PDTC, were designed and synthesized. PMTA was used for desilication in hematite reverse flotation. PMA-PDTC was used in the separation of Cu-Pb concentrate as galena depressant. The micro-flotation results showed that PMTA exhibited a good depression performance compared to starch. We found that 98.29% of hematite was depressed with a grade of 65.24% at pH 11 with 12 mg/L dosage. The flotation separation results of Cu-Pb concentrate demonstrated that PMA-PDTC was an effective depressant for galena in separating galena from chalcopyrite. When IPETC was used as collector, at pH 8.5, the flotation separation tests demonstrated that Cu concentrate was obtained with a grade of 28.89% containing 12.12% Pb.INTRODUCTIONThe role of depressants is crucial in the separation of oxide or sulfide minerals, for example, the desilication in hematite concentrate and the separation of Cu-Pb concentrate.It is well known that, in current reverse flotation processing of hematite, starch is a traditional depressant for hematite. Most research focus on the modification of starch [1-3]. Although its depressing ability is enhanced in some extent, its own shortcomings is still existed. So, it is important to develop a new hematite depressant instead of starch.In the separation of chalcopyrite and galena, because of their extremely similar floatability, it is difficult to realize the separation of these two minerals. Traditionally, there are two methods widely used in the separation of Cu-Pb concentrate by depressing chalcopyrite with cyanide [4] or depressing galena with dichromate [5] in most cases. However, these two inorganic depressants are toxic and hazardous. Their use could cause heavy pollution problems and a large loss of precious metals. In order to adapt to the requirements of sustainable economic development and environmental protection, the research and development of green and environmental depressant has gained more and more significance."

TATA STEEL is the pioneer in coal beneficiation in India. The first coal beneficiation plant was set up in 1951 at West Bokaro and subsequently in 1953 in Jharia. Over the years more beneficiation capacity was added by setting up new coal washeries in both West Bokaro and Jharia, the coal divisions of Tata Steel. currently the beneficiation capacity available is 8.5 mtp aappx Being a captive supplier supplying the coking coal as per demands of our steel works is challenging in the sense that the intent is to leverage the captive raw material advantage and select the best strategy for maximizing value up to steel making. The beneficiation plants were designed to produce clean coal up to 17% ash. With the demand of increasing productivity at the blast furnace the clean coal ash was lowered. subsequently the processes were audited and efficiency improved. The next challenge was to improve the throughputs in the existing plants to maximize the clean coal production. The upgradation was designed in house and implemented to upgrade the plant from nameplate capacity of 2.1 mtpa to 4.5 mtpa while the yearly production targets were also achieved. The presentation will detail the different phases of improvements, process followed, challenges faced, and the results as achieved in the process. Consistency of Run-Off-Mine (ROM) quality plays an important role in mineral processing which is not very often talked about. The major impediment is limitation of sampling ROM ore, which makes processing plants to run without any realtime feedback on ore quality that comes in. The process of direct determination of Run-Off-Mine (ROM) ore quality is expensive and time consuming as drawing and preparing representative samples from blasted muckpiles are constrained by large sample size and inherent heterogeneity in terms of size and chemistry. In absence of techniques for direct measurement of quality, monitoring and control of ROM, feed to the processing plant at Joda East Mine, like all other iron ore beneficiation plants worldwide, is largely based on blasthole sampling and subsequent chemical analyses of blastcone chips. While such indirect methods proves to be more accurate for representing whole of a mining block or blasted muckpile (~30-50KT/blast), it is indeed a challenge to ascertain and predict day to day input quality for a part there off. This eventually leads to a gap between predicted and actual ROM quality, resulting in difficulties in process control, in turn, and leading to wide swings in product quality. Hence, it is imperative to bridge the gap between predicted and actual ROM quality by arriving at means, which ensure consistent plant feed grade to deliver consistent output. The paper discusses an efficient and affordable alternative for effective prediction of ROM alumina which has been developed by integrating blasthole quality database in GPS based Truck Dispatch System (GPS-TDS) at Joda East Mine. Initially, GPS-TDS has been installed for optimizing production parameters only, but this development has helped in further utilization of GPS-TDS for real time quality monitoring by improving ROM grade prediction and scheduling from several ore blocks in active mining areas. The separation in gravity concentrators is based on the density difference between valuable and gangue minerals. In addition to density, many auxiliary parameters like particle size, shape, feed rate, pulp density etc. plays an important role in the separation. The performance efficiency of gravity units is largely based on the interference of such auxiliary parameters during separation. Many gravity concentrators are used for the beneficiation of cassiterite ores and performance of which are varying with different feed material, particle size and required enrichment from the unit. Selection of gravity units is generally based on laboratory testing and data collected from the previous experience. In the present investigation cassiterite ore collected from Uljin deposit, South Korea has been subjected to various gravity units like jig, spiral, and Knelson concentrator with the intension to pre-concentrate the ore. Second stage concentration was carried out using shaking tables. The article mainly summarizes performance evaluation methods employed for gravity concentrators. Selection of gravity circuit for the beneficiation of cassiterite was made on the basis of the recovery-grade curve, and Tromp curve methods. In this study, solvent extraction of zirconium by using triphenylphosphine oxide as extractant has been investigated. The results showed that extraction of zirconium by triphenylphosphine oxides in nitric acid and hydrochloric acid media were negligible. Extraction of zirconium in acetic acid media with concentration of 0.01~0.2 M has been studied and the results showed that the maximum percent of zirconium extraction was 40% in acid acetic with concentration of 0.01 M. By addition complexing agents such as potassium thiocyanate with the concentration of 0.01~0.2 M zirconium extraction increased up to 86% in 0.2 M potassium thiocyanate. By addition of sodium salicylate with concentration of 0.01 M and in pH=2.5, the maximum extraction of 96% was achieved. The striping of zirconium from organic phase can be carried out by 0.5 M solution of sulfuric acid.

Attempt was taken in this study to explore the misplacement phenomena in binary mixture in solid-liquid fluidisation system. The binary mixtures of hematite and quartz particles at different sizes were taken. The closed size range particles were taken to minimize the size and shape effect in fluidization. As both the minerals have appreciable density difference, the separation of both minerals with closed size range has an advantage. The experiments were conducted in different permutation and combination of different sizes of binary mixture to observe the fluidization phenomena. The samples were taken at different heights in fluidized zones and analyzed the distribution of particles of both minerals. The fluidization characteristics were evaluated with respect to operating and design parameters. It has been observed that when the terminal velocity of quartz and hematite particles is same or near to each other, then misplacement is significant. In general, the segregation index value is near to one, complete segregation takes place whereas this value is near to zero, complete mixing takes place. The experimental data were used to find out the segregation index for different size ratios of quartz and hematite particles and the values are within 0-1. When the size ratio is 1 or less, complete segregation takes place whereas this ratio is within 1.0-1.4, partial mixing takes place. Similarly, when the size ratio is within 1.4-2.0, complete mixing takes place whereas this ratio is within 2.0-4.6, then it moves towards complete segregation in inversion manner. As core part of flotation column, aerator has been always priority research. A new type of porous aerator made of stainless sintered microcellular material is designed , which diameter is between 20µm to 40µm. High bubble surface area flux is obtained at low air pressure 20kPa by this type of aerator in water. In order to extend its applied range ,experiments were carried out in alkali slurry (pH=12) , resulting with porous aerator clogged after working 20 days . Sampling the cross-section of aerator detected by microscope and X-ray diffraction ,the reason clogging was found. Then plugging aerator was reactivated after putting it in acidic liquor treated by ultrasonic for about ten minutes. On-line aerator maintenance can be done in no down time , and it can be repetitive-used after recovered ,so reduced capital costs.

"Bacteria that grow in autochtonous communities of gold heap leaching (HL) wastes are adapted to high concentrations of contaminants and environmental conditions. An example of a mine in the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic showed that the bacterial factor had a significant influence on cyanide breakdown and copper and nickel removal in the conditions of HL ore pile zoning compared to chemical oxidation. The diversity of bacterial communities growing in natural and simulated conditions of a HL ore pile was determined for the purpose of the study. The identified bacterial communities included genus Achromobacter and Serratia, which were found to be adapted to a wide range of temperature and can be considered as potential microorganisms for detoxification of gold HL wastes. INTRODUCTION Technologies and systems of passive treatment are of a special interest in relation to solving environmental problems of gold HL wastes detoxification, when neutralization time is not considered as a limitation (Alvarez et al. 2005). Passive treatment methods are based on reagentless spontaneous breakdown of cyanide caused by natural factors, including activity of autochthonous bacterial communities. Implementation of a reagentless biodetoxification technology for mature HL operations provides reduction of environmental impact on industrial site locations and substantial economic benefits compared to conventional chemical processes of neutralization that prevail in the Russian Federation territory. Passive treatment of cyanide-containing wastes was investigated by M. Botz, T. Mudder, S.V. Petrov, L. Simovic, A. Smith, C.A. Young etc. However, the bacterial factor (autochtonous bacterial communities) role in this process is practically unexplored. Thus, the aims of the study included the investigation of a bacterial factor influence on passive treatment of gold HL wastes and the identification of functional groups of bacteria involved in passive treatment."

In surfactant flooding, surfactants added are often a mixture of the same type of molecules with different lengths of carbon chains. The relationship between a single, pure surfactant solution and crude oil is seldom studied. Additionally, up to now, alkylbenzene sulfonates are applied widely in surfactant flooding, such as Daqing oilfield, China. A factory producing alkylbenzene sulfonates will enlarge its yield to 20 000 tons per year over there. For the purposes of widening the alkylben-zene sulfonates? application, 16 kinds of pure alkylbenzene sulfonates were synthesized through Friedel-Crafts acylation and Wolff-Kishner reduction reactions, and the compounds? molecular structures were confirmed by 1HNMR and 13CNMR spectra. The factors affecting interfacial tension (IFT), such as, surfactant type, oil composition, electrolyte concentration, and alkali concentration were considered. The synthesized pure surfactants? critical micelle concentration (CMC) and optimal salinity were measured through interfacial tension technique. According to lab experiments results, heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate (2SY) was synthesized in magnifying scale in Jinzhou Wash Chemical Plant and the coretests were conducted using it. The results showed that the homemade heavy alkylbenzene sulfonate (2SY) flooding can improve oil displacement efficiency 20% more than water flooding at surfactant?s concentration from 0.05%(wt) to 0.2 %(wt).
