"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Cependant, les propositions récentes de systèmes d’inventaires ne comportent pas des définitions des ressources et réserves qui tiennent compte suffisamment des besoins des opérateurs en exploitation et en exploration minière.La plupart des systèmes comportent des ambiguïtés et des carences. Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Il n’y a jusqu’à maintenant aucun consensus dans l’industrie sur ces points, ni sur des procédures de réconciliation entre les estimations successives.Le système d’inventaire des ressources/réserves proposé ici s’appuie sur la structure ISO 9000 et le système australien. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. De même, les définitions des trois catégories de ressources et deux catégories de réserves, s’apparent sur la continuité de la géologie et des teneurs et sur les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité. Ce projet offre une voie pour développer les critères de la certification ISO 9001 pour les opérations minières, tout en fournissant un système approprié d’inventaire aux compagnies d’exploration, pour mieux informer les actionnaires et les investisseurs potentiels."

"A test to determine the amount of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given; possible uses are discussed. A case study of how the technology was used at Hemlo Gold Mines is presented.IntroductionUsing gravity to supplement either flotation or cyanidation is a well established practice in the gold industry. It differs from most recovery circuits in that most of the gold recovered by gravity would be recovered in any case by the circuit downstream, be it flotation or cyanidation. The economic justification of gravity is therefore based on small margins (for example. a net smelter return of gravity gold of 99%, as opposed to 94% by flotation). It was easily demonstrated when either flotation or cyanidation were relatively inefficient processes, and labour costs low (as gravity can be labour intensive). Over the past thirty years, the advent of better flotation machines (flash, column, high capacity), more effective collectors, and better control systems has increased flotation's metallurgical performance, thereby decreasing the incentive for gravity recovery. Cyanidation technology has undergone similar changes, with the advent of activated carbon, oxygen and lead nitrate addition, and improved impeller design.Today, gravity could remain an attractive option only inasmuch as it can be implemented with very low capital and operating costs. This has resulted in a relative shift away from gold gravity recovery (except for alluvial deposits), in the seventies and eighties. For example, as of the early nineties, gold gravity recovery has disappeared from the typical South African flow sheet. The advent of the Knelson Concentrator, at the beginning of the eighties, foreshadowed a resurgence of gravity recovery, as gold's grinding and classification behaviour (Banisi, Laplante and Marois, 1991) makes it possible to achieve adequate gold recoveries with very simple, Knelson based, gravity circuits (Laplante et al., 1994).Consider for example the Hemlo recovery circuit, made of a single 61 cm x 122 cm (2' x 4') screen, an automated 76 cm (30"") Knelson feeding a Gemeni table, to produce a 70-80% Au concentrate which accounts for approximately one fourth of the gold production (about 3 million grams per year). The low capital and operating costs make it possible to justify the gravity circuit on the basis of savings in other operating costs (e.g. fewer carbon stripping and reactivation cycles). Any improvements in recovery, which would at Hemlo be difficult to measure, would be additional benefits. Such a circuit is rapidly becoming a standard in Canadian and Australian operations.The justification for installing a gravity circuit must be first based on an estimate of how much gold it will recover (irrespective of what the potential benefits are). This is a function of the nature of the gravity circuit to be installed; however, Knelson circuits, by their very simplicity and efficiency, limit the options. This leaves the amenability of the ore to gravity recovery as the single most important parameter. Various approaches can be used to characterize this response (Woodcock, 1993). Chemical reduction of selenate by chromous ions is proposed as a novel method to remove selenate from sulfate-bearing solutions Chromous ions were generated by electrochemical reduction of chromic ions using an electrochemical cell. The investigation was conducted in sulfate medium and under various concentrations of chromous ions (0.0062 to 0.05M), pH 1 to 2.2 and temperature 10 to 60°C. Selenate ions were rapidly reduced by chromous ions to hydrogen selenide. The overall reaction at a chromous/selenate molar ratio of 8 or higher can be expressed by the following reaction. At an initial chromous/selenate molar ratio below 8, the products are hydrogen selenide and elemental selenium. At a lower chromous/selenate molar ratio and pH, more elemental selenium and less hydrogen selenide are produced. The reduction kinetics is controlled by both chromous ion and hydrogen ions concentrations. The reaction rate is first order with respect to selenate, hydrogen ion and chromous ion concentrations. It was found that the selenate reduction rate with chromous is independent of the concentration of sulfate present in the solution. The general rate equation was proposed and the rate constant was calculated as k= 0.38 M-2s-1. An activation energy of 58.7 kJ/mol was obtained in the temperature range from 10 to 50°C. Nearly 100% of selenate can be reduced to H2Se from solution containing 17 ppm selenate in less than 30 minutes at pH 2.2 and 60°C. Various strategies have been tested to remove the produced H2Se from solution. INTRODUCTION Selenium in nature is mostly associated with metal sulfide minerals such as copper, iron, zinc, and lead sulfides (Zingaro & Cooper, 1974). The extraction of metals from ores has the potential for selenium contamination of ground and surface water which can pose an environmental and health concern. Therefore, selenium contamination in the receiving environment is a key issue for many industries (specifically copper industry) and the treatment of wastewater contaminated with selenium is a growing challenge. The effective removal of selenium from contaminated water is very important to support sustainability in the copper industry and the other industries with selenium pollution issues.

Coal is the mainstay of Indian energy supplies. The many-fold increase in demand for coal puts a huge pressure on augmenting production, primarily from opencast mines. The increase in production necessitates heavy blasting in overburden and coal benches of opencast mines, which poses numerous challenges in carrying out blasting operations techno-economically. Presently, the consumption of industrial explosives and accessories in Coal India Limited (CIL) has touched a whopping figure of $350 million USD per annum and CIL will be spending approximately $1 billion USD between 2012?2013 to 2014?2015 for procuring explosives and accessories. This paper discusses some of key challenges faced in various mines of CIL during blasting, where blast instrumentation at the mine level will prove to a harbinger for practicing blasting engineers. Presently, the problem of scattering in surface detonators and down-the-hole detonators affects the blast performance significantly by increased blast induced ground vibration and reduced fragmentation. The paper discusses a case study carried out at Umrer opencast project of CIL to investigate the effect of scattering by using blast simulation techniques (i.e., JKSimblast) and observing the actual blast results with the help of a high-speed camera and multi-channel high frequency data acquisition systems. The fragmentation assessment was carried out by adopting Digital Image Analysis techniques and using the granularity software viz. Wipfrag. The blast instrumentation in the case study mine resulted in improvement in fragmentation of 12.76% and a direct savings in explosives cost of 28%. Geophysical techniques such as the seismic survey method have been used at Umrer Project, CIL to characterize the rock mass using the Multi Channel Analysis of Surface Waves system for selecting the explosives technoeconomically. The minimum deck thickness for mines of CIL using drill cuttings as decking materials should be 10 D, where D is the drill diameter. The estimation of blast performance on the basis of prescribed Powder Factor (i.e., kg of explosives per m3 of rock) is technically unscientific as the criterion of a good blast depends on many factors (i.e., good heave, loose muck, muck profile angle, ease of digging, uniform fragmentation). The present paper proposes a new methodology for techno-economic evaluation of blast performance. The new methodology involves four significant factors viz. specific energy consumed by the loading equipment, charge factor, productive yield and diggability index for assessing blast performance. The use of user-friendly, accurate, reliable, rugged and handy instruments in blasting will significantly improve mine productivity, equipment efficiency and economics. The improvement in blast performance, even by 1%, will provide a significant savings of $3.5 million USD per annum to CIL. It may be concluded with high degree of confidence that blast instrumentation at the mine level will influence the mine productivity and economics.

All of this can be done long before any damage is done to the equipment.Monitoring Trend AnalysisIt is no longer necessary to compromise in selecting products, since state-of-the-art designs allow the adjustment in such small increments that the users are able to detect minute changes in a system's performance.Monitoring and trending of motors and equipment bearings is now available in economical packages which can be expanded as a system grows. Simply select the information you need, set the parameters, choose the scan time, and decide on the degree of reporting.Buffer storage of short-term monitoring of a number of analogue channels permit the user to view the recent history of motor data such as: motor average load, unbalance, motor current, ground fault, reserve thermal capacity, plus all of the settings of the protective device.A decision can be made to freeze the stored information after the motor stops or after the motor starts. Then the user is able to recall the conditions and diagnose the performance and the cause of the abnormal condition. Typical scan times range from ¼ second to 5 seconds ."

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC} has mined and processed an iron deposit in Western Labrador along the Labrador-Quebec border since the early 1960' s. Current capacity is approximately 19 million tonnes of concentrate, 70% of which is converted to pellets at these facilities.The ore deposits are located in hills rising 150 to 300 meters above the adjacent lakes, and most of them are covered by very little overburden. The iron minerals are mainly specular hematite and magnetite hosted in a quartz formation. Crude ore averages 40% Fe that is concentrated to 65.5% Fe. IOCC is an extensive operation extending from Labrador City NF to Sept-Iles Quebec. It consists of open pit mining, concentrating, pelletizing, railway, and dock loading facilities.The Concentrator liberates iron from the silica by crushing and grinding the ore to -14 mesh (-1190 microns}. Ground ore is concentrated in spirals and filtered for transportation. Spiral tailings are treated in a Magnetic Recovery Plant (Mag Plant} that recovers lost magnetite. Mag Plant tailings are treated in a Hematite Spiral Plant (Hem Plant} that scavenges fine iron remaining in this stream.This report deals with ongoing iron recovery initiatives within the ConcentratorIron Losses in the ConcentratorIron recovery at IOCC is approximately 70.5%. This compares with recoveries that range from 65% to 86% for other iron mines in our area. Other world large iron ore producers dig and ship concentrate quality ore directly out of the ground and have an effective recovery of 100%. With increasing costs for labour, equipment, and supplies an increase in iron recovery is required to keep the operation viable.More than 90% of our iron concentrate is produced by gravity separation using spirals. The physical characteristics of the iron minerals that most effect recovery are mineral grain size and degree of liberation. "The objective of this work is to develop a practical numerical approach for applying the confining pressure to discrete element cylindrical triaxial tests. A layer of membrane particles with very low stiffness and extremely high contact bond strength was created around the lateral boundary of the cylindrical numerical specimen. To prevent the membrane particles from penetrating into the rock specimen on application of confining forces and to provide a smooth boundary surface, the space between the membrane and rock particles was filled using small-diameter packing particles. The results of this method were compared with those of rigid boundary method with confining pressure of 20MPa. The results obtained show that new approach gives both peak strength and post peak response that are in closer agreement with laboratory findings. BACKGROUNDThe discrete element method (DEM) has become the cornerstone for simulating both intact material and discrete fractures for low porosity strong rocks (ISRM Classes R3 to R6). Despite the advances in its application, simulating realistic behaviour of intact rock using the DEM remains a challenge. The bonded particle model was introduced as a potential solution for simulating the complex mineral grains in strong rock and other granular materials (Potyondy and Cundall, 2004; Utili and Nova, 2008; Salot et al., 2009). While some issues were resolved, a remaining challenge is the lack of the bonded particle model to simulate the brittle response commonly observed in strong rocks during the triaxial compressive test. Such behaviour is shown in Fig. 1 for Lac du Bonnet Granite at a confining pressure of 20MPa."

"Abstract - Natural gamma-ray measurements were made in the GSC Smeaton drillhole as part of the borehole geophysical classification of kimberlite pipe 169. In addition, forty samples of Cretaceous sediments (shales, siltstones, and sandstones) and thirty-five kimberlite samples, selected from the drill core, were analyzed for major and trace elements. These elements included potassium (K), uranium (U), and thorium (Th), which are the main naturally-occurring radioactive elements.Different phases of the kimberlite, and the Cretaceous sediments which show variations in the gamma-ray activity, can be easily delineated on the gamma-ray logs. The gamma-ray logs indicate that the radioactivity in the kimberlite derives mainly from Th, and, to a lesser extent, U. Most of the kimberlite units are enriched in Th and U relative to the Cretaceous sediments, and these radioelements are mainly hosted by accessory apatite and perovskite, and minor zircon. Potassium concentrations are low in the kimberlite. The higher K concentration in the sediments clearly distinguishes the Cretaceous sediments from the kimberlite.The U/K and Th/K ratios show important and distinct differences between the two major types of volcaniclastic kimberlite. Kimberlite lapillistones have higher U/K and Th/K ratios than the olivine crystal tuffs. Furthermore, standardized U/K and Th/K geophysical logs can be used to separate marine reworked olivine shoreface sands from other shallow marine sediments that contain kimberlitic detritus. The identification of different phases and/or stratigraphic facies of kimberlite on the basis of radioelement distributions means that gamma-ray spectrometry can assist exploration, particularly in regard to diamond grade distribution."

"Zinc has been used for many years as a galvanic coating for the protection of steel. Electrochemical measurements show that zinc actually overprotects steel. The corrosion rate of DQSK (drawing quality semi-killed) steel in air saturated salt water was determined as a Junction of applied cathodic potential. The resulting data indicate that at a critical cathodic over potential of - O. 725 Vsce an acceptably low corrosion rate of less than 1 mpy occurs. Using the developed criterion, alloys of Zn/X and AL/X were produced and evaluated in galvanic contact with steel in a standard laboratory test. The results indicate that Zn /Mn, Zn /Co, AI/Mg/Si and AI/Mg/Ge alloys offer excellent galvanic protection along with (a) no hydrogen evolution, and (b) improved dissolution life over Zn coatings.IntroductionZinc coated (galvanized) steel has been successfully used in applications where bare (or painted non-galvanized) steel would suffer corrosive attack. In general, galvanic coupling to zinc, as either an anode or a coating, is an effective means for combatting steel corrosion. Because of this, the use of galvanized steel has increased markedly, stimulated primarily by automobile manufacurers seeking to extend the corrosion warranties on automobiles(1).Although effective, zinc coatings are not without a number of drawbacks which warrant efforts to improve them. For example, because of the widely differing electrode potentials between zinc and steel ( - 1.05 Vsce and - 0.60 Vscc, respectively, in air saturated NaCl solutions), the zinc corrodes at a rapid rate to protect the steel. This is reflected in the limited lifetimes of galvanized unpainted siding. The basic electrochemistry controlling the situation is shown in Figure 1, for a system controlled by oxygen reduction. The zinc corrodes sacrificially to protect the steel, while cathodically polarizing the steel to a potential near that of zinc's open circuit anode potential."

"Rapid dampening suspension is a proposed suspension design for ultra-class haulers that is intended to avoid metal-to-metal contact inside a strut and under shock loading, thus improving ride quality and ameliorating fatigue loading issues on a hauler structure. Laboratory testing has shown the ability of the proposed design to reduce the opportunity for bottoming out, that is, metal-to-metal contact between the colliding ends of oleo-pneumatic, two-piece suspension struts during the compression cycle. This paper predicts the performance of a full-size rapid dampening suspension strut by applying scaling rules to test the proposed design based on a set of field data from a Caterpillar 797B ultra-class haul truck operating in the oil sands region of the province of Alberta, Canada. The top size of particles in the flotation of potash ores, which can be as large as 4 mm, exceeds by far the top size in other flotation plants. It is then understandable that while long chain amines are used in the flotation of fine fractions (below 0.8 mm) of potash ores the coarse particle flotation also requires an extender oil. While new and very promising fluidized-bed flotation machines (e.g. HydroFloat) constitute a significant development in the flotation of coarse particles, in the area of extender oils, as reviewed in 2007 by Strathdee, Gotts and McEachern, there have been no new developments to replace the industry standard asphaltene-based carcinogenic extenders. This situation first of all results from the experimental problems that arise when water-soluble minerals like sylvite are to be tested in saturated brine. Both oils and longchain amines are water/brine insoluble. The oil with the amine dissolved in it can however be emulsified and then used as an extender oil. Such oil droplets must wet KCl particles and the emulsion must be stable to avoid handling problems. In this paper we test the use of the phase inversion technique as a method of studying wettability of KCl particles by the oil in saturated brine, and the effect of amine dissolved in this oil on the wettability. The results show that this relatively simple technique can be used to characterize the wettability of fine KCl particles by the tested oil and to determine the effect of added amine on it, and so it can be useful in selecting proper extender oils.

"Future Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plants will have superior environmental performance and unmatched efficiency.The Shell Coal Gasification Process (SCGP) is a clean coal technology, which can convert a wide range of coals into clean syngas for high efficiency electricity generation in an IGCC plant. SCGP flexibility has been demonstrated for feeds ranging from bituminous coals to lignites and petroleum coke, and the process is ideally suited for combined cycle power generation, resulting in efficiencies of 42% to 46% (LHV).In the Netherlands, a 250 MWe coal gasification combined cycle plant based on Shell technology is being built by Demkolec, a development partnership of the Dutch Electricity Generating Board (N. V. Sep). The plant is scheduled to start up in 1993. IntroductionBasic ConceptShell's experience with gasification dates back to the 1950s, when the first Shell Gasification Process was commissioned with oil as feedstock. There are now over 140 SGP gasifiers licensed. The experience gained on oil gasification provided a firm theoretical and practical base for the start of coal gasification process development in 1972.At that time, there were serious concerns about the future availability and price of crude oil. Coal gasification (making carbon monoxide and hydrogen by the partial oxidation of coal) was considered to be an important option for refinery applications, because the synthesis gas (syngas) produced can be used as:• a chemical feedstock for making transportation fuels and chemicals;• a source of hydrogen (making use of the water gas shift reaction) for upgrading petroleum products; and• a fuel for heating process streams and/or generating electricity."

"The Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located at 4200 m elevation in the Chilean Andes. The deposit is a world-class supergene enriched porphyry with a mining reserve of 89 Mt of 1.3% copper. The supergene zone will produce 6.3 Mt of ore per year for more than 15 years to produce 75 000 t of cathode copper per year.This paper will review the project geology the computer model ling of the deposit, the mine planning process and the property production scheduling. IntroductionProject DescriptionThe Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located in the northern part of the Chilean Andes. The project is based on the supergene enriched portion of a porphyry deposit which has a mining reserve of 89 million tonnes at 1.3070 copper. Below the enrichment blanket, the protore represents a further resource.All ore will be leached, the higher grade material will be crushed and stacked for thin layer heap leaching, and the lower grade and oxide material will be dump leached as run-of-mine material. Solvent extraction and electrowinning will be used to produce 75 000 tonnes of cathode copper per year. Power will be supplied by a 40 MW on-site diesel generating plant with the waste heat being used for process heating. The leaching operation will operate in excess of 15 years and may be followed by open pit mining and conventional ore concentration of the underlying primary sulphide mineralization.Because of the dry location water will be piped 37 km from a ground water source at the Salar de Michincha. Water requirements will be approximately 1.5 million m3/year. The operation will eventually employ approximately 550 people on a 7-day-on, 7-day-off rotation with two twelve-hour shifts per day with an on-site camp. Busing will be provided to the port city of Iquique."

"Mining research at CANMET is delivered by the Mining Research Laboratories Division (MRL), with facilities in Sydney, Nova Scotia; Bells Comers, Elliot Lake, and Sudbury, Ontario; and Val d'Or, Quebec. This paper gives an overview of the work of the Division as of early 1993. An addendum, at the end of this paper, describes the organizational changes that will take place in April 1994. IntroductionCANMET, the acronym for the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology, is the name by which the organization founded in 1907 as the federal Mines Branch is presently known. The name was changed in 1974, in order to give recognition to the importance of both minerals and energy technologies in the activities of the Branch. Further reorganizations have taken place since 1987. As a result of these, CANMET has assumed the status of a Sector (equivalent to the Geological Survey of Canada) and has been organized into four branches.The organization as a whole functions in an environment of semi-matrix management. Some of the ""line"" Divisions report to Directors-General for the appropriate branches while other, larger divisions, report directly to the Assistant Deputy Minister.The second dimension of the organizational matrix is composed of a number of ""staff' divisions which report to the DirectorGeneral for Policy and Planning. Each of these Divisions performs a function which is common to all of the ""line"" divisions. For example, the Research Projects Office is responsible for monitoring the range of research activities of CANMET and for recommending allocations of funds for both research contracts and operating budgets. The Library and Documentation Services Division is responsible for CANMET publications and information services. "This paper outlines some of the factors that affect the airflow required for the ventilation of modern diesel-powered equipment and of electric equipment and examines how they can be applied in determining reasonable ventilation rates for Tier IV compliant diesel equipment and for electric equipment operating in mining environments. Airflow calculations for modern diesel-powered equipment and for electric equipment are more complex and must be based on a combination of factors that are unique to each mine. Methodologies for ventilation rate determinations for each case are proposed in this paper.INTRODUCTIONTraditionally, airflow requirements for production and support equipment operating in underground mines have been determined by multiplying the vehicle power by a ventilation rate that was either mandated by regulations or determined empirically from known quantities. However, in light of the drastic reductions to diesel equipment emissions mandated by the US EPA Tier IV and EURO Stage 4 regulations, there is still a great deal of uncertainty in the underground mining industry among those responsible for the ventilation of planned new mines or the expansion of current mines. The question remains, what ventilation rates should the ventilation system designer apply for modern diesel equipment?Also, given the ongoing development of grid/battery-electric equipment and active construction of fully electric mines, it has become critical to determine adequate airflow rates per brake kilowatt of electric engine power. One of the most important criteria for determining ventilation rates for electric equipment is the amount of heat they generate, as this is the most significant emission produced by electric equipment (which do not produce exhaust gases or particulates). Therefore, ventilation rates required to dissipate heat from electric equipment must be suitably determined for all electric vehicle fleets operating in underground mines."

In most copper solvent-extraction operations, an important consideration in choice of extractant is the requirement for high selectivity of copper over iron. Ester-modified aldoxime extractants presently offer the best Cu:Fe selectivity. In some plants, however, the process feed liquors contain significant amounts of manganese but little iron. Although manganese is not chemically extracted by oximes, trace amounts are carried over to the electrowinning circuit by physical entrainment. This may result in anodic oxidation of manganese which, in turn, can cause oxidative degradation of the organic phase when returned to the solvent-extraction circuit in the spent electrolyte. Many of these operations prefer to operate with higher levels of iron reporting to the advance electrolyte, as appropriate control of the Fe(II)/Fe(III) couple will ensure that manganese remains in the benign Mn(II) form. A new reagent, LS 4202, designed by Cytec, now offers the possibility of tailoring the iron co-extraction, so that appropriate Cu:Fe selectivity can be achieved in the solvent-extraction operation to maintain an electrolyte Fe:Mn mass ratio of >10:1, while retaining the other benefits offered by ester-modified aldoximes. The results of an integrated solvent extraction-electrowinning pilot-plant trial are presented, in which the performances of the conventional extractants ACORGA® M.5774 and LIX® 984N are compared with LS 4202. The Cu:Fe selectivity is demonstrated, along with results on the transfer of other impurities to the advance electrolyte.

QCM?s pellet plant, located in Port-Cartier, Quebec, produces up to 8.6 million tons of iron ore pellets annually. Four different types are produced: three for blast furnace operations and one for direct reduction furnaces. The paper presents the scientific approach that led to the installation of new process equipment to improve the reducibility of direct reduction pellets (DR pellet). The findings, the equipment selection and some post start-up modifications are presented. This low silica DR pellet is used in Midrex and HyL shaft furnaces. A good DR pellet has to meet strict chemical, physical and metallurgical specifications. An important metallurgical property is its ability to release oxygen when exposed to reducing gases. Considering that the market for DR pellets is expanding and being aware that reducibility is critical for our clients, a program to improve the latter was undertaken. Test work showed that one factor which has a negative effect on reducibility is the proportion of particles larger than 75 microns. Knowing that the best way to reduce the amount of coarse particles was to close our open grinding circuits, we began evaluating the most suitable classification equipment applicable to our process operations. We settled on hydro-classifiers based on their very sharp cut and their low operating costs. In light of the hydro-classifiers performance it was also decided to replace the hydro-cyclones of an already closed circuit.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the value of applying continuous improvement, in particular 5S and standard work, in an underground environment. 5S and standard work are two aspects of Lean manufacturing that have been applied in many industries. At Vale Canada Limited, the focus is to first stabilize the process, commonly through the use of 5S, standard work and other continuous improvement techniques. In parallel with building an engaged workforce, these approaches aim to incrementally stabilize and improve a process. 5S is an employee-driven, systematic methodology to reduce waste in all its forms through attaining, maintaining, and improving workplace organization. Identified as a foundational part of any improvement process, 5S aims to remove wastes that impact on the overall efficiency of the area. Standard work is used to formulate a common approach to how tasks are carried out to ensure consistency. Standardization involves identifying, establishing, and following the best method. The aim is to eliminate the variation that can occur when there is not a pre-defined established standard. Demonstrating the value of 5S and standard work in an underground environment will be achieved by first understanding the overall concept of Operational Excellence and continuous improvement as practiced within our operations. The paper will then cover a real application of 5S and standard work within the underground environment at Thompson, Manitoba.

"The cost of energy is a growing factor in the cost of zinc production. Electrowinning from sulphate solutions with periodical reverse current or from acidic chloride or alkaline solutions could be the way to lower costs. A comparison of the energy consumption for electrolysis shows that the alkaline solution may be considered the most promising alternative. IntroductionZinc electrowinning from sulphate solutions is a very energy intensive process (typical specific energy usage : around 3.1 kWh / kg zinc). This energy consumption represents 35% of the total cost of electrolysis and is the most important cost component.In order to lower costs, the energy efficiency of the sulphate process should be improved or alternative processes should be developed. In this laboratory, that objective has resulted in research on electro winning in sulphate solutions with the use of periodical reverse current (PRC) and in acidic chloride and alkaline solutions.Some of the results obtained in this laboratory and already published and new experimental results reported in this paper make it possible to present a more critical comparison of the energy consumption of the three processes mentioned.ExperimentalThe experiments at constant current were carried out as described previously. Specific conditions are indicated in Table I. Current efficiencies were obtained by weighing deposits.ResultsThe best energy consumptions for electrolysis obtained in this laboratory for the three media are presented in Table I. More detailed results can be found in the papers already mentioned."
