The creep response of the AE44 magnesium alloy was studied by means of constant load creep tests carried out at 125 and 150°C, obtaining that at the latter temperature the minimum creep rate observed under an applied stress of 100 MPa was two orders of magnitude lower in the investigated alloy than in AM50. The minimum creep rate dependence on applied stress was described by a conventional power-law, e = Aon , where A was a temperature dependent parameter and n was the stress exponent, resulting in a n value close to 30, i.e. by far larger than those observed in commercial alloys with similar Al content. This large difference in creep response was attributed to the precipitation of rare earths (RE) intermetallic phases distributed in the grain boundary zone in form of an almost continuous network of dispersoids that were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy.

It has been previously demonstrated [1,2] that using selective collector bar rodding has a big impact on the uniformity of the current density at the top surface of the cathode block and hence on the intensity of the horizontal current in the metal pad, The present study investigates the impact of using selective collector bar rodding on the MHD stability of a 500 kA aluminium electrolysis cell, For this purpose the recently developed MHD package for the aluminium reduction cell time dependent behavior is used.

The behaviour of minerals during flotation of a fine-grained pyrite-rich base metal ore was investigated by studying the feeds. concentrate and tailings from every flotation cell in the mill of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corp. Ltd. Bathurst. New Brunswick. The samples were analyzed for Zn, Pb, Cu. Fe, Ag. Sb, Sn, Bi, In. Hg, Mo and As. Mass balances were computed and recoveries of all metals from each cell. from each circuit and from the mill were calculated. The percentages of sphalerite. galena and chalcopyrite occurring as free grains in each product were determined with an image analyser, as were size analyses for free mineral grains and middling particles, and compared with screen analyses. The results show that the behaviour of minerals is defined much better by the recovery of free mineral grains than by the recovery of elements. The recovery of free sphalerite in the zinc circuit is 96 wt %, whereas Zn recovery from the same circuit is 88 wt %. the difference being due to unliberated sphalerite. The recovery of free sphalerite from the mill feed is 88 wt % and Zn 78 wt %. The recovery of free galenafrom the mill feed is 88 wt % and Pb 64 wt %. The recovery of free chalcopyrite is 75 wt % and Cu 45 wt %. Size analyses show that more sphalerite and chalcopyrite can be liberated by regrinding. but the galena is so fine grained that regrinding would not necessarily improve liberation. Silver occurs mainly in tetrahedrite and galena; the main loss in the tailings is due to large (+ 26 um) and small (-1 um} free and unliberated tetrahedrite grains.

In view of the alarm expressed in many quarters over the increased production of copper to come from Canada and Africa in the future, it is of interest to study the history of the principal producing districts of the world and to attempt to forecast the future part to be played by them. Tables 1 and 2 record the world production and that of the United States, together with their respective rates of increase, both in percentage and actual amounts. The important point in this record is the decline in rates of increase for both the world and the United States, but more particularly in that of the latter, since 1881. The increase for the United States in the last decade is less than that for any decade since 1881, and is only 20 per cent of that for the decade 1911-20. The increase for the world is less than that for the two preceding decades, and is only about 65 per cent of the war decade 1911-20. Referring to Table 1, the decade 1871to1880 showed an increase of 32.l per cent in the world's production, which was the low until the last decade, ending 1930, which shows an increase of only 24.5 per cent. These decades both represent periods of economic stress following wars. In the first case the recovery was very sharp, the percentage increase in 1881-90 reaching a high of 86.4 per cent. It would seem dangerous, however, to assume that a similar high will be reached in the next ten years, because of the severity of the depression brought about by the Great War and the probability of its influence extending well into the next decade.

"The study of a detailed series of structure and isopach maps of the Palaeozoic strata of southwestern Manitoba indicates that the principal Palaeozoic tectonic elements -the Williston Basin and Elk Point Basin -have been modified to a considerable extent by major tectonic features of the Precambrian basement. The principal basement feature is the break between the Churchill and Superior provinces, which coincides roughly with the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. East-west-trending orogenic belts within the Superior crustal block may also be reflected to some extent in later Palaeozoic movements. In addition, the Superior crustal block, as a whole, appears to have had a slightly different response to the tectonic forces, giving rise to both basin subsidence and basin uplift. During periods of deposition, especially during Ordovician time, the Manitoba portion of the basin appears to have undergone a relatively higher rate of subsidence, whereas during periods of erosion relatively greater amounts of uplift and truncation have occurred. As a result, the depositional and erosional patterns for most of the Palaeozoic formations in southwestern Manitoba are somewhat anomalous relative to the regional basin framework.Some prominent Palaeozoic structures probably are the result of salt solution and differential compaction caused directly or indirectly by relatively minor tectonic movements related to Precambrian basement features. In particular, the prominent hinge line at the edge of the Devonian Prairie Evaporite salt basin may be due, in large part, to salt solution. Numerous other small structural lows, structural highs and isopach thicks, probably resulting from salt solution, occur along the salt edge and have been important in modifying and controlling Mississippian oil accumulation in the Daly-Virden producing area."

Mining operations, especially surface coal mines, have great impacts on the local ecosystem and the environment. However, it has been a common practice in mine design that the economic evaluation considers only the operating and capital costs, while the costs incurred due to ecological damage are left out. Such practice underestimates the total cost of mining and ignores the difference in ecological impacts between different mine design alternatives. With growing interest in sustainable development, the mining industry is under increasing pressure to operate not only based on economic and engineering principles but also on principles of sustainability. Therefore, estimating ecological costs of mining and considering such costs in the mine design process is an important step towards reducing ecological impacts at the design stage. The objective of this paper is to quantify the ecological costs of open pit coal mining and to demonstrate the influence of such costs on the ultimate pit design. The ecological costs of mining are estimated based on the areas and types of land damaged by mining activities and the carbon emission from energy consumption. Four major components of ecological cost are identified, namely, lost value of direct eco-services, lost value of indirect eco-services, prevention and restoration costs, and the cost of carbon emission from energy consumption. Necessary equations are given for estimating these costs. An algorithm is described for ultimate pit optimization in coal deposits with near-horizontal coal seams. A case study is presented in which the ultimate pits with and without ecological costs are optimized and compared to show the influence of ecological costs on the pit design outcome.

"The Central Canada Potash facility, a division of Noranda Metal Industries Limited, is located 3 kilometres south of the junction of Highways 16 and 2, about 75 kilometres south-east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The site occupies 26~ hectares of land and includes well-equipped machine and electrical _shops, a 325,000-tonne muriate storage and reclaim warehouse, a stores warehouse, processing plant (mill), two mine shafts (one for production, the other for servicing and personnel transport), as well as a two track product loading complex. Access to the site is by road and railway (CN and CP Rail). Suppliers of operating and maintenance use both means of transportation, whereas muriate shipments are entirely by railway.Currently five continuous mining machines - one a Goodman 526 borer and four Marietta 911-A units produce some 10,500 tonnes of ore per operating day. A smaller Voest-Alpine Af.1-100 boom type miner is used for floor cutting which was previously done by a production unit. In order to maintain safe, competent ground conditions only 35 percent of the total ore is extracted. At this rate mine reserves are deemed adequate for about 100 years. The plant has operated since August 1969 and has a current practical annual capacity of 1,270,000 tonnes of muriate. As of June 30, 1981, some 11.9 million tonnes of muriate had been produced from 31.4 million tonnes of ore. Of the total muriate, 6.1 million tonnes was granular, 4.8 million was coarse, and 1.0 million was standard. No standard product has been made since August 1978."

"Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) modelling has increasingly being used in many geotechnical and mining engineering problems, the authors believe there is an ever greater demand to provide updated guidelines that address the collection of discontinuity data in the specific context of DFN models. In general terms, the generation of a DFN model requires collecting information on i) fracture orientation, ii) fracture intensity, iii) fracture length and iv) fracture terminations. The International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM) suggested methods for the quantitative description of discontinuities in rock masses directly include most of these parameters. However, there are important differences engineers should be aware. To what extent discontinuities can be sampled and which limitations are inherently introduced in the analysis by the sampling methods being adopted represent important aspects that should drive the collection of discontinuity data for DFN analysis; this will require the introduction of a more appropriate set of guidelines bridging the gap between the current, very practical, ISRM methods and the data requirements imposed by the use of new DFN technologies.INTRODUCTIONThe last decade has seen a major increase in use of the Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) approach, both as a stand-alone tool or integrated within more complex geomechanical simulations (Rogers et al., 2014 and Elmo et al., 2014). In particular, the DFN approach offers the opportunity to maximise the use of fracture data collected from mapping of rock exposures and to construct synthetic rock mass (SRM) models. However, the potential of DFN based modelling is limited if there is insufficient care in collecting the necessary structural data at the required engineering scale. DFN models are also subject to the process of data calibration and validation (Hadjigeorgiou, 2012). With DFN modelling becoming an almost integral part of many geotechnical and mining engineering problems, the authors believe there is an ever greater demand to review the process of collecting fracture data in the specific context of DFN modelling.The value of the DFN model depends directly on the quality and quantity of available field data. For example, fracture length (persistence) is an important parameter in DFN modelling; however, this parameter is either seldom available at the pre-feasibility stage due to a lack of exposures (man-made or natural), or engineers have access to limited length data collected along exploratory drifts. Characterisation of rock exposures should also take into account limits of window/scanline mapping techniques with respect to both trace length bias and the effect of cut-off assumptions inherent in the mapping methodology."

It will also discuss various features of sales contracts and the degree to which they can assist in securing financing. IntroductionThe cost of bringing new mining projects on stream is escalating significantly more rapidly than general rates of inflation. Reasons for this include the higher costs of safeguarding the environment and ensuring the health and safety of workers. The need to develop properties in more remote areas is also a significant factor. These higher costs have not been matched by increases in metal prices, making the task of financing these projects ever more difficult. At the same time, the imagination of borrowers and lenders seems boundless, and innovative schemes for financing projects are constantly being unveiled.It is probably safe to say that no two projects have ever been financed in precisely the same way and the number of financing options for any project is limited only by the imagination of the sponsors themselves. The objectives of the project sponsor represent the most important factor in determining the scope of possible financial arrangements. For example, the sponsor may wish to maximize over-all company leverage by isolating each of its projects in separate companies. In so doing, it hopes to facilitate more ventures than would otherwise be the case. These objectives point toward true project financing. Additional objectives may be to develop a number of its properties by joint venture and to reduce the amount of debt on the sponsor's balance sheet. Those sponsors whose objectives include minimizing over-all financing costs will wish to increase the number of financial options and, as a result, will not be so concerned with effecting true project financing. This approach may also provide ""greater certainty that tax benefits are utilized quickly."

"Dialkyl dithiophosphinates are a unique class of collectors used in the flotation processing of Cu- Au, complex polymetallic, and precious metal ores. They are known to exhibit higher selectivity and flotation rates for Cu sulfides, galena, and precious metal values in the presence of other gangue sulfides, than the traditionally used collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates and xanthates. They also have an attractive HSE profile. Historically, for most reagents used in flotation, practical methods of chemical usage have preceded detailed scientific understanding of how they work; this applies also to dithiophosphinates. Recently, however, the research community has shown significant interest in this chemistry, and numerous studies have been conducted to understand the fundamentals of interactions of dithiophosphinates with several base metal sulfides and precious metals. A critical overview of fundamental studies, laboratory ore flotation, and plant practice of dithiophosphinates is given in this paper. The findings from these studies are rationalized by drawing on concepts and insights from coordination chemistry. A comparison between the interactions of dithiophosphinates and dithiophosphate analogues with various minerals and metals is also made throughout. We believe that such a critical analysis/overview will be invaluable in identifying gaps in knowledge regarding this important set of compounds, which in turn may provide a basis for the design of studies that can advance understanding of their flotation performance. INTRODUCTIONDialkyl dithiophosphinates are an important member of the class of thiophosphorus compounds that are widely used in flotation beneficiation of base metal sulfide and precious metals ores. Ore flotation studies and plant practice experience have demonstrated their unique properties compared to the traditionally used sulfide collectors such as dialkyl dithiophosphates (their closest analogues) and xanthates. The predominant dialkyl dithiophosphinate used in the industry today is sodium diisobutyl dithiophosphinate (a.k.a. DIBDTPi; AEROPHINE® 3418A1 introduced by American Cyanamid in the late 1970s; Figure 1). The widest application of AEROPHINE 3418A is found in complex polymetallic ores of Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn where it has demonstrated improved recoveries (and flotation rates) of sulfide minerals of Cu, Pb and Ag and selectivity against sphalerite, iron sulfides, and penalty elements (Mingione, 1991). More recently, it has also been used as a collector in the processing of Cu, Cu-Ni, and Ni ores (Guitard et al., 2015) and Cu-Au ores (Dunne, 2005). In general, it is considered to possess the collecting power of xanthates together with the selectivity (against pyrite) of dithiophosphates (Hope et al., 2003a, 2003b), while requiring lower dosages than those reagents (Guitard et al., 2015). AEROPHINE® 3418A has also found an important place in several targeted formulations to improve flotation performance. Other benefits of this reagent include higher flotation rates, having a better HSE (health, safety and environmental) profile2 compared to xanthate, and exhibiting resistance to hydrolysis and oxidation (Guitard et al., 2015). Compared to diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), which is known to contribute significantly to frothing (often leading to over-frothing), AEROPHINE® 3418A is observed to be froth neutral (i.e. it does not alter the existing froth characteristics). As is the case for other flotation reagents, the design and application of AEROPHINE® 3418A has preceded understanding of its behavior at a fundamental level. "The paper is introduced by an examination of the factors which have led to the present world-wide interest in charging preheated coal to coke ovens. Various possible methods of preheating and charging the coal are considered and reasons are given for the adoption of the methods chosen. The design of the pilot preheating plant for the British Coke Research Association is discussed and its influence on the design of the commercial units for the South African Iron and Steel Corporation's plant at Pretoria and the British Steel Corporation's plant at Beighton are explained. Operating procedures on the pilot plant are described, particularly with regard to the charging of the preheated coal. Design features of the commercial installations, engineered by Simon-Carves Ltd., are explained with emphasis on the built-in safety of the control system of the preheating plant, and the particular problems associated with the erection of such plants on working coke oven batteries. Commissioning and operating procedures are described and the problems associated with the integration of the preheating plant into the normal pushing schedule of the plant are discussed. Preliminary operating results with regard to the effect of preheating on coal throughput on the commercial plants and on the properties of the coke produced are given."

The ion exchange process (IX) is applied in the mining industry for the removal of impurities from process streams, treatment of waste solutions prior to disposal and the recovery of valuable metals. Extensive studies have been performed with the goal of modeling of IX for the case of a single metal loading onto iminodiacetic resin in the hydrogen form. However, in a real system, a resin may be saturated by impurities (iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese), which are then displaced by the metal of interest. The present study provides an insight into the Fe2+ loading process onto iminodiacetic ion exchange resin under the infinite solution volume condition. The study involves the measurement of iron loading under a variety of experimental conditions as well as an attempt to model the loading process using the hybrid correlation advanced by McKevitt (2012). The importance of the experimental and modeling work are discussed in the context of resin in pulp recovery of nickel.

"The yearly production from the Asbestos Hill pit is 1,550,000 tons of asbestos ore, with a yield varying between 18 and 20 % . The orebody was exposed at the top of a hill, and initial production started without having to remove any overburden. The projected ratio of barren rock to ore, based on the present orebody, was 2 to 1. However, as it was necessary to push back the upper benches, this ratio has changed to 3 to 1. The final pit will be 2,300 feet long by 1,000 feet at the longest and widest points. The final depth will be 680 ft. A pit slope stability study was carried out and an average wall angle of 60-70 degrees must be maintained. Preshearing of final pit limits will produce good wall stability. Permanent access ramps will be 60 ft wide, with an 8 % maximum grade. Geological conditions and the low rock temperature are the major causes of the operation's drilling and blasting problems."

A general approach to mine backfill design, including laboratory testing procedures, is outlined in this paper. Relationships between certain design parameters are developed and the effect of other factors is discussed. It is concluded that the inclusion of backfill design calculations at an early stage of mine design can often produce over-all design economies. Not only are the data needed for backfill plant and tailings disposal area design, but also the pillar recovery method and over-all mine stability are dependent on the attainable fill properties.

Froth flotation is one of the most common and widely used separation processes in the mineral processing industry; however, its complexity means that complete understanding of the process has not yet been achieved. A dynamic fundamental model is needed to enhance the understanding of the process and to improve process control. It is challenging to capture all the phenomena involved; hence, we propose a multiscale modeling approach with a framework ranging from macroscopic (equipment scale) to microscopic (attachment, detachment) models along with distribution models for ore particle sizes. Real-time froth properties are obtained using a vision-based sensing system. These measurements can be used for developing a soft sensor for grade using statistical methods such as PCR (principal component regression) and PLS (partial least squares) regression. The fundamental model is updated in real-time using extended Kalman filtering. Attachment dynamics are studied for different particle size distributions. The modeling and soft sensing is tested on batch flotation cell for the pure mineral galena with different particle size distributions using Xanthate and MIBC as collector and frother, respectively. The model, online measurements and soft sensor are useful in developing monitoring methods for froth flotation.

"The mining and metallurgy industry is highly energy intensive and one of the largest energy users in Canada. Energy costs are also a major component of total production costs in this industry as described in the 1990 Report of The Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC). For some plants, energy costs are reported to be up to 30% of total production costs. Therefore, a reduction in energy costs provides an opportunity to improve industry profitability. The specific energy intensity and production costs can be reduced by using modem energy efficient natural gas technologies. In addition, these technologies often improve product quality and increase productivity. Natural gas not only offers economic benefits, but is also environmentally benign as compared to other major energy sources. Emissions of NO"", CO2 particulates and SO2 are lower with natural gas than other fossil fuels.This paper provides a brief overview of some state-of-the-art gas technologies for the mining and metallurgy industry including cogeneration, oxy-air-fuel burners, ceramic immersion tube heaters, direct gas contact process, low NOx burners, and energy efficient liquid heating systems.CogenerationCogeneration is defined as the simultaneous production of electricity or mechanical power and useful process heat from a single fuel source. One of the primary considerations in selecting a cogeneration system is the relative quantities of electrical and thermal energy which are to be produced. Two types of systems are discussed below."

"Abstract - The 12.1 Mt Brunswick No. 6 Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag massive sulfide deposit (New Brunswick, Canada) lies between two subaqueous felsic volcanic formations near the base of the Middle Ordovician Tetagouche Group. The footwall comprises rhyodacitic pyroclastic rocks (Nepisiguit Falls Formation), whereas the hanging wall comprises a sequence of rhyolitic flows, breccias, and hyaloclastites (Flat Landing Brook Formation), with an age difference of less than 3 m.y. The Brunswick No. 6 deposit is a proximal autochthonous deposit with a well-zoned massive sulfide body and a basal Cu zone that, at depth, develops into a stockwork stringer sulfide (feeder) system. The massive sulfides are capped sharply by a layered magnetite-chert unit that extends regionally beyond the deposit. The deposit has a keel shape (sheath) formed by the F1F2 interference pattern. The heterogeneous ductile deformation and upper greenschist-grade regional metamorphism has transposed many of the epigenetic stockwork structures and alteration within the host sequence. Hydrothermal alteration is much more extensive, both vertically and laterally, in the footwall (a few 100 m) than in the hanging wall (<100 m). Anomalies farther up in the hanging wall sequence seem to be associated with independent alteration systems related to the rhyolite domes. The least-altered footwall units exhibit keratophyric alteration (albite or adularia) and weak Mg enrichment (chlorite). More intense micaceous (sericite and Mg-rich chlorite) alteration occurs around the footwall sequence. The transposed stockwork stringer sulfides are typically composed of Fe-rich chlorite (± sericite, ± silica) with pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, and sphalerite. The (Fe2O3T+MgO)/(Na2O+K2O) and base metal alteration indices are the best practical lithogeochemical vectoring tools at this deposit. Sommaire - Le gîte de 12.1 Mt de sulfures massifs de Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag Brunswick No.6 est localisé entre deux formations volcaniques felsiques sous-marines situées près de la base du Groupe de Tetagouche d’âge Ordovicien Moyen. Le mur consiste en roches pyroclastiques rhyodacitiques (Formation de Nepisiguit Falls) tandis que le toit consiste en une séquence de coulées, de brèches et d’hyaloclastites de composition rhyolitique (Formation de Flat Landing Brook); la différence d’âge entre les deux est de moins de 3 m.y. Plusieurs des structures épigénétiques du stockwork et des patrons d’altération de l’encaissant ont été transposés par la déformation ductile hétérogène ainsi que par le métamorphisme régional au faciès des schistes verts. L’altération hydrothermale est beaucoup plus importante, tant verticalement qu’horizontalement, dans le mur (quelques 100 m) que dans le toit (<100 m). Les anomalies situées plus haut dans le mur semblent être reliées à des systèmes d’altération indépendants associés aux dômes de rhyolite. Les unités les moins altérées du mur une altération kératophyrique (en albite ou en adulaire) ainsi qu’un faible enrichissement en Mg (chlorite). Une altération en mica (séricite et chlorite magnésienne) plus intense est présente autour de la séquence du mur. Les sulfures du stockwork de filonnets transposés consistent typiquement en chlorite ferrifère (± séricite, ± silice) accompagnée de pyrite, de pyrrhotite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite et de sphalérite. History The Aldermac mine is situated on the Nipissing Central railway near the &apos; centre of the township of Boischatel, Quebec, and is about ten miles west of Noranda. Aldermac Mines, Limited, is a subsidiary company of Towagamac Exploration Company. The property was staked by Messrs. Alderson and MacKay and McMartin, during the winter of 1922-23. During October, 1925, a copper discovery was made by K. W. Fritzsche, who was in charge of exploration work at that time, the first trench on this discovery averaging 8 per cent copper over a width of ten feet. This led to the discovery of another body 200 feet to the north, with an average of 3 per cent copper over fifteen feet in width. A magnetic survey was then carried out which led to the location of the large pyrite ore-bodies which have been developed in the past few years. Development work was carried on to a depth of 1,125 feet, and approximately three million tons of massive pyrite ore was indicated. Extensive metallurgical tests were conducted in the laboratories of the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines at Ottawa to determine the proper metallurgical treatment and the economic possibilities of the ore. Owing to the comparatively low copper content, and the uncertainty of the copper market, it was doubtful if the mine could be profitably operated for the production of copper alone. Messrs. Alderson & MacKay, however, realized the possibility of utilizing the large tonnage of pyrite as a substitute for native sulphur, &apos;which in past years has been imported into .Canada for the manufacture of acid and sulphate pulp in paper mills. They therefore organized the Sulphite Research Corporation with the object of developing an economical process of utilizing the pyrite.

The current focus of research and development in transportation industry is to use lightweight materials such as aluminium alloys for more structural components. In this regard, maintaining safety of the passenger and vehicle is the most important; therefore crashworthiness of components made of lightweight materials must be evaluated prior to sizable application of these materials. The focus of the present study is to understand failure and damage mechanisms during the axial crushing of aluminium tubes made of A1Mg3.5Mn alloy of 2 and 3.5 mm thickness. Due mainly to complexity of the crushed tubes, a microstructural approach is considered. In this study optical, stereo as well as scanning electron microscopy techniques have been used to study damage and failure mechanisms in these types of tubes, which are essential energy absorbing components in passenger vehicles.
