Introduction Situated 182 miles east of Vancouver, on the Kettle Valley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, the Princeton coal field is readily accessible to the Coast markets. The area covers approximately forty square miles and present indications are that the deposits should contain at least 300,000,000 tons of coal. Comparatively little development has yet taken place in this coal field. Since the commencement of recorded output, the collieries operating in this area have produced 1,640,518 tons of coal. The coal field proper includes only the Tertiary deposits adjacent to the town of Princeton and does not include the Coalmont or Nicola deposits. Production has never been on a large scale. The largest annual output from any property was 81, 780 long tons mined at the Granby colliery in 1940. Coal output was first recorded in 1909 and since that time fifteen properties are reported to have either mined coal or to have done prospecting or development work; of these, only two are presently active. However, none of the properties now inactive were closed because their coal resources were exhausted. The accompanying key map shows the extent of the Princeton coal field, and the location of the coal mines and prospects in this field General Geology The Princeton field is underlain by rocks of Oligocene age and is one of the series of more or less isolated Tertiary lake basins in which coal, or lignite, has been found in the interior of British Columbia. Resting on the Nicola group rocks of Triassic age, the Princeton sedimentaries consist of sandstones, conglomerates, shales, bentonite, bentonitic clays, and several seams of coal. Tertiary volcanics occur both above and below the stratified rocks and in places they have been thrust through the overlying measures. In some areas, the coal has been burned to a red ash as the result of vulcanism, while in other parts some of the moisture has been driven from the coal, thus improving the grade. The field can best be described by dividing it into two areas: the Southern area, lying to the south of the town of Princeton, where most of the mining has been done; and the Northern area, to the north of Princeton, where very little development has taken place.

"The Eastern Abitibi Sub province (Quebec segment), contains two main types of gold deposits: the common quartz-vein type and the rare pyritic type. Both occur in areas dominated by volcanic rocks and are spatially associated with major fault zones.Quartz-vein gold deposits consist of simple to complex networks of quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins in reverse shear zones and extensional fractures. They occur in areas dominated by mafic volcanic rocks and are commonly associated with small syn- to late-tectonic porphyritic felsic intrusions. Associated alteration, which postdates peak metamorphism, is dominated by carbonatization, sericitization and pyritization of the wallrocks. These deposits formed late in the geologicalevolution of the Abitibi.Pyritic gold deposits range from deformed massive sulphide lenses to zones of syntectonic pyrite-rich veinlets and associated pyrite disseminations. These deposits occur in environments dominated by felsic volcanic rocks that are typically converted to sericite schists near the deposits. The associated pre-metamorphic aluminous alteration is now characterized by metamorphic sericite, andalusite, kyanite and chloritoid, overprinted by a late retrogression of alumino- silicates. These deposits probably represent deformed volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, but the timing of gold introduction in these is not fully understood.The differences in geological attributes reflect significant differences in the genesis these deposits: the pyritic deposits probably have a multistage genesis, including a pre-tectonic stage, in contrast to a single stage late-tectonic genesis for the quartz-vein deposits.RESUMELa partie Est de la Sous-Province de l’Abitibi( segment québécois) renferme deux types de gites d' or: ceux de type ""veine de quartz"" et ceux, plus rares, de type ""pyriteux"". Ces gites se retrouvent dans des empilements contenant surtout des roches volcaniques felsiques qui sont transformées en schiste à séricine pres des gisements. L’altération a l’umineuse pre-metamorphique associée a ce type de glte a donné naissance, lors du metamorphisme regional, a la sericite, a 'andal ousite, a Ia lcyanite et au chloritoi""de; par la suite, les alumino-silicates ont été affectes par une alteration retrograde tardive. Ces gites representent probablement des depOts de sulfures massifs volcan gènes déformes, mais la chronologie de la mise en place de l'or dans ceux-ci est encore mal comprise.Les caractéristiques géologiques propres à chacun de ces types de gites reflètent des conditions de formation différentes: le type ""pyriteux"" montre une histoire génétique polyphasée, incluant une étape pre-tectonique alors que le type ""veine de quartz"" s’est développe au cours d’une seule phase tardi-tectonique."

ABSTRACT: Joseph (2002) introduced passive seismic monitoring to measure mining equipment performance. This paper evaluates the potential of passive seismic monitoring to correlate mining equipment operation with oil sands surface response, with a mining hauler as the seismic source. When applied to moving haulers, this action–reaction approach is complex. Vibrations from on-board equipment, such as pumps and tires, dirty the signal with noise. To facilitate any correlation, the signal must be cleaned up. Existing geophysical analytical techniques were manipulated to evaluate the noise problem and to filter sufficiently to permit an evaluation of whether a mining equipment action–ground response relationshipis in fact discernable.

The limitations of present-day methods are reviewed, particularly as to anomaly causes, depth penetration and quantitative physical interpretative abilities. Some of the problems now under study are discussed. Future developments expected include the treatment of quantitized geologic and geophysical data, as well as continuing attempts toward computerized interpretation."

"Introduction Byron Creek Collieries Limited Corbin mine is located in southeastern British Columbia approximately 180 air kilometres southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), twenty four kilometres south of Highway No. 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). The development of the area began July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J. Roberts first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co., after acquiring 6,000 hectares of land in the area, began to develop a mine. Mr. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 22-kilometre rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production. The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3) and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,120,800 tonnes. CAN PRESENT TRENDS CONTINUE? Can population growth in the world keep going at the average rates of the last few decades, till, say, the year 2000? And beyond? At the same time, can we expect steady increases in mineral consumption per head, all over the world, as the living standards of many nations converge toward the living standards of North America? If they do converge? Does the total fund of world resources extend, with foreseeable techniques, to supplying the consequent demands for metals, non-metallic minerals and energy? Do we have the requisite economic and scientific techniques available to answer these questions? Certainly, we cannot forecast over decades with any certainty. There are many, of course, who seem to believe that by the simple fitting of trends, they can tell us something about the world and resource constraints in the year 2000, twenty-three years from now. It is significant that many studies of this sort have added sustenance to the 'doom-watching' fraternity of commentators. The reason is simple. The extrapolation of exponential trends into the distant future frequently leads to the most astounding and impossible scenarios. Another feature of exponential growth is the suddenness with which certain fixed limits are approached. It took world population two hundreds years to increase by 1/2 a billion, from 1650 to 1850. Yet some U.N. estimates suggest that the net addition to human population will be over 2 billion between now and the end of the century. Thus, the present world population would increase from a little under four thousand million today to rather over six thousand million in the year 2000.

Cerro Verde is one of several large porphyry-type copper deposits in Southern Peru. The copper occurs as primary sulphides, with a significant oxide capping. The exploitation of the deposit has been correspondingly divided into two stages, the first consisting of copper production from oxides, and the second from sulphides. Minero Peru successfully started the Stage I plant in June of 1977 with the first production of electrowon copper cathodes. This paper is essentially devoted to a description of the Stage I process, which can be summarized as follows: Ore is trucked to the primary crusher, where it is crushed to 225 mm and conveyed to a coarse ore stockpile. Ore withdrawn from the stockpile is secondary crushed to 65 mm, conveyed to a truck loadout bin, loaded into trucks and driven to the leaching pads. Ore is placed on the pads in lifts and sprayed with sulphuric acid solution to dissolve the copper. Copper-bearing solution forms a pond behind a dam at the lower end of each pad and is pumped from there to the solvent extraction plant. Copper is extracted from the leach solution into an organic phase and is then stripped from the organic phase to form a purified concentrated copper solution suitable for feed to electrowinning. In electrowinning, the copper is finally recovered as cathodes suitable for sale as refined copper.

There is significant interest in magnesium alloy castings because of their low density and high strength-to-weight ratio. Lightweight, structural materials are in demand for aerospace components, hand tools, electronics enclosures and have found increased use in automobiles. Increased use of magnesium will depend on the resolution of a number of materials issues and development of more robust and economical casting processes. Most magnesium components are produced via high-pressure die-casting. High levels of porosity generally prevent die-castings from being used for structural applications. Structural castings are usually produced using sand casting, a relatively expensive casting process. Some work has been done on development of lower cost structural casting processes, such as lost foam casting, permanent mold casting or low-pressure casting. New programs are also emphasizing improvements to the die casting process. Research and cost reduction needs are discussed with respect to current programs and future components.

This paper outlines the principles of friction hoisting and the components involved, and gives a description of a specific mine hoist. Friction hoisting is compared with conventional drum hoisting, and the depth of shaft at which friction hoists become more economical than drum hoists, with respect to power consumption, is determined. Introduction T HE purpose of this paper is to outline the principles of friction hoisting, to describe the components and to show the advantages of multi-rope friction hoisting. Some calculations are made to show that the power requirements and the initial costs of friction hoists are less than those of conventional drum hoists, once a certain depth of shaft has been reached. The use of multi-rope friction hoists is gradually superseding the employment of the conventional drum hoist in many parts of the world. It results in heavier payloads from deeper levels, an increase in shaft safe-ty and a more compact installation for protection against adverse weather conditions. It was observed that where drums and friction sheaves exceeded 30 feet in diameter, a number of mechanical disadvantages were being experienced;

Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texasgulf Incorporated, operates the Kidd Creek mine, a 10,000- tpd base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator, the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous onstream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was further automated by adding computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery 0.8% and zinc recovery 1.6%, and reduced reagent costs by 12%. Although not anticipated, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved modestly as well.

"Several mineralogical investigations have revealed the composition of modified kimberlites and the mud generated during treatment of diamonds, which contains up to 50% clay minerals (e.g., talc, talcsaponite, chlorite-saponite, Na-saponite) and X-ray amorphous phase. We investigated the composition of the natural diamond surface in relation to the diagnosed minerals and established the sequence and conditions for mineral formation on the crystal surface under kimberlite processing conditions. This article suggests a method to destroy and further dissolve minerals on the crystal surfaces using water system electrolysis products, which makes it possible to restore the diamond hydrophobic properties. The application of chemically treated water in the foam separation cycle under the conditions of high recovery of diamonds made it possible to increase the content of the factory concentrate by 8.0%.INTRODUCTIONThe high content of the modified minerals in the kimberlite ore results in the formation of hydrophilic slicks on the surface of the crystals which decreases the diamond’s hydrophobic properties and increases the losses thereof in the process of grease and foam separation to 20-30% (Kurenkov, 1957; Chanturiya et al., 1998, 1999, 2005; Duikarev et al., 2000).The previous researches have revealed the fact that the prospective way of solving the problem of intensity of mineral impurities formation on the surface of the crystals and the increase of concentration parameters is reached due to application of physical and chemical stimulation techniques on the solid and liquid pulp (Stricland-Constable, 1971; “Improvement of the technology…”, 2006; Makarskii, Adodin & Tarasova, 2011; Chanturiya, Dvoychenkova & Trofimova, 2012). "In an attempt to address the issue of rising labour costs, and to improve productivity, a laser-based system to guide underground LHDs and trucks has been developed. This comprehensive system is known as the Opti-Trak system.Essentially, the vehicle is equipped with front and rear-mounted lasers which scan a reference strip mounted on the drift back. The vehicle follows this reference strip and in addition, based on reflective bar codes mounted beside the reference strip, initiates certain functions (i.e. dump cycle, speed change, brake check, etc.). Any programming that is drift-specific is handled by the positioning of the reference strips and bar codes. Consequently, the vehicle can easily travel to many different haulageways or branches, providing the reference strip and bar codes are in place.The advantages of this system are an immediate elimination of haulage operator costs and an increase in available hauling time to 7 hours out of an 8-hour shift as compared to the typical 5Y2 out of 8 hours that a manned haulage system offers.This paper describes the Opti-Trak system and the benefits to be realized from automation of mine haulage requirements."

In order to maximally remove the harmful impurities phosphorus and reduce the loss of valuable elements from Si-based alloy for production of solar-grade silicon, thermodynamic properties of the Si-based alloy were studied. In this work a new model, the Molecular Interaction Volume Model (MIVM) derived from statistical thermodynamics, was successfully used in the Si-based and Si-Fe-based alloy. The calculation started from binary Si-Fe, Si-P and Fe-P systems, then the thermodynamic parameters of ternary systems could be derived based sub-binary systems. Using the activity coefficients of the elements in the Si-based alloys and the saturated vapor pressure of the pure substance of the components, mass fraction of P during vapor-liquid equilibrium can be calculated. The calculated thermodynamic parameters were compared with experimental data available in different publications, and it is found that the thermodynamic parameters calculated using MIVM model are in good agreement with the measured results. The calculated result shows that the mass fraction of phosphorus during vapor-liquid equilibrium of Si-Fe-P melt increases with the increasing phosphorus content and decreasing temperature. This is an important direction for experimental practice in vacuum or low-pressure EML refining of ferrosilicon for potential production of solar-grade silicon without significant vaporization loss of valuable element.

"This paper presents a phenomenological model of the rate of iron(III) precipitation in batch and continuous autoclaves at medium temperature operating conditions. The rate expressions are based on information obtained from the literature and experimentation at low and high pulp densities. Special allowance is made for the formation of surface nuclei, which appears to be promoted at a higher iron(III) precipitate surface area, especially in suspensions of lower terminal acidity. This leads to the formation of secondary particulates and provides the required link to simulate high pulp density leaching-precipitation systems, using low pulp density batch precipitation data. In particular, the model allows direct application of the simulation to the autoclave oxidation of iron-containing copper sulfide concentrates and provides a good estimation of the relative precipitation rate of hematite, the preferred product, compared to hydronium jarosite. Some interesting mechanistic understandings of iron(III) precipitation in autoclaves are further elucidated.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of this work is to describe the rate of iron(III) precipitation and the relative amounts of hematite compared to hydronium jarosite precipitation during batch and continuous chalcopyrite oxidation under medium temperature (MT) (~130 to 160ºC) autoclave conditions. Published information has not yet revealed sufficient mechanistic insights about this sparingly soluble salt system under these conditions. The rate expressions in this paper are based in part on current literature information, supplemented by qualitative experimental observation at low pulp density conditions, in particular the high-resolution backscatter electron (BSE) images and particle size distributions (PSDs) of the precipitates. A summary of this work and insights from the literature are presented first, after which the behaviour of iron(III) in high pulp density leaching systems is used to derive a phenomenological expression of the effect of existing iron(III) precipitate surface area on the precipitation rate. The overall regression encapsulates all the experimental results, i.e., those obtained in both batch and continuous autoclave configurations (Steyl, 2012a)."

High-ranking new scientists and engineers -particularly those with the Ph.D. degree -find themselves in an apparently delightful situation; the glow of attention that surrounds them and the dazzling starting salaries that are offered to them may indeed be turning their heads a bit and the attitudes of some of them are sometimes expressed with a smugness that can find its equivalent only in freshmen. On the average, however, the new graduates are, without any doubt, the best trained ever, or at least they have been the most expensive to train in the universities.There appear to be exciting opportunities for competent, well-trained and educated scientists and engineers far beyond the numbers that can be annually produced, and the demands for excellence in depth as well as in breadth of training probably will continue to increase for many years to come. The problem is visible all around us in Canada that there is much more money to buy brains than there are brains to be bought."

Masses of pyritic copper and zinc ores are entrapped along the contact zone between two volcanic groups in the Matagami area. The upper limits of the sulphide concentrations tend to form concordant contacts against lava or cherty tuffite units of the younger group; the lower extremities tend to either follow transverse structures or merge with zones of dispersed sulphides. The sulphides are deformed and intruded by folded dykes. Close relations between metallization boundaries and volcanic lithology and stratigraphy, and a preliminary investigation of the fabrics and crystallization temperatures of the sulphide masses, suggest that the copper and zinc (but; not necessarily all the iron sulphides) were emplaced at h1gh temperatures during volcanism in near-surface lithological-stratigraphic traps. Introduction T HE Matagami area is centered 120 miles north of the Val d'Or and Noranda camps in north-western Quebec. For the present purpose, it is considered to comprise a 155-square-mile area in Isle-Dieu, Galinee and Daniel townships which encompasses the main sulphide masses. The mining of high-grade, narrow vein deposits is an important field of activity in the precious metal mining sector. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise dilution, the Thermal Fragmentation Mining Method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 50 cm to 1 metre wide (according to the width of the vein), between two sub-level drifts. By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and compressed air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction is created, spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 80 cm in diameter. The remaining ore between the thermal holes is broken loose using low powered explosives, leaving the waste walls intact. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400% - 500% less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method reduces the environmental affects of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a 2-person team (1 thermal fragmentation operator, 1 drilling operator) maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, and increases productivity and safety. The Thermal Fragmentation is currently employed in 3 mining operations in North America.

Introduction This paper describes a recent innovation in the design and construction of mine headframes. A reinforced concrete headframe was built by using sliding forms. A concrete headframe of conventional design was originally considered, but investigation of this project showed that it was doubtful if the bearing strength of the soil was sufficient to support the great weight of a structure of this type. In addition, the slope and the fractured condition of the serpentine bed-rock did not permit satisfactory piling. A conventional steel headframe with storage bins was then designed, but, due to the steel situation, delivery promises were set back many months. The concrete headframe was again investigated, and a design was adopted incorporating a circular headframe lower in height than that first considered, with skips discharging into a smaller surge bin. The upper section of the shaft collar was strengthened to result in a stable structure which would be supported by bed-rock, as well as by the concrete and steel lining of the shaft itself.

"To understand the operation of jigs and other separating processes based on differences in gravity, it is desirable to analyse the motion of various particles in given media under specific conditions. A summary of the earlier theories shows that they lead to unsatisfactory or excessively complicated formulae in cases such as coal jigging. By adopting a simplified theory of the motion of particles in a fluid, the size and duration of the initial accelerated motion of a particle falling in hindered settling can be calculated. Based on this mathematical analysis, examples referring to actual coal jigging practice show that it is desirable to prolong and/or repeat, as frequently as possible, the optimum conditions corresponding to an effective acceleration of the particles. The separation is then obtained according to gravity rather than to particle dimensions, as would be the case if the velocity of the particles• were allowed to approach its terminal value. To achieve this gravity separation, it is suggested that the suction phase of the jigging cycle be artificially prolonged and the frequency of pulsations increased as much as possible for washing the coals of smaller sizes."
