The implementation of robust, reliable and accurate sampling systems is the key to the successful management of any mineral processing plant. The representative sampling of a mineral processing plant is the only way to determine what is coming into the plant, what is going out as fi nal product and what is going to tails. In plants with high gravity gold components, where high recovery effort gravity circuits are installed, the use of a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) sampling system can assist in the online monitoring of the performance of the circuit. The typical installation location would be in CIP or fl otation feed (ie cyclone overfl ow), downstream of the gravity circuit. A GRG sampling system generally consists of the following equipment: true proportional, continuous drive, linear cross cut sampler, secondary vezin sampler operated on a timer, a batch centrifugal concentrator, and sample dewatering module. The operating philosophy of the GRG sampling system is that the primary sampler operates on a continuous basis, generating a constant stream of truly representative sample. Consep's H&S drive system is unique in its ability to be able to operate in a continuous mode, therefore enabling a continuous stream of representative sample to be generated. The primary sample stream reports to the secondary sampler. The secondary sampler operates on an intermittent basis (nominally ten minute interval), resulting in a relatively small sample volume per shift. Normally the sample volume would be ten to 15 L per shift. The secondary sample rejects stream reports back to the batch centrifugal concentrator. The sample generated from the secondary sampler can be dewatered using a Consep H&S dewatering module. This device produces a final sample that consists of separate filter cake and filtrate. These are suitable for taking directly to the laboratory. The continuous stream of truly representative secondary sampler rejects is passed through an appropriately sized Knelson Concentrator, typically a KCMD7, KCCD10 or KCCD12 sized unit. This unit recovers any available GRG from the stream. The Knelson Concentrator is also purged of its gravity concentrate at the end of the shift. This sample, which is nominally around 1 - 2.5 kg of concentrate, is also taken to the laboratory. At the end of the shift the client will have a measure of the gravity recoverable gold content of the target slurry stream, as well as a true representative sample of the complete stream. Through the addition of a Knelson Concentrator to an otherwise typical sample station, it is possible to generate a true measure of the performance of your gravity circuit. This will take the guess work out of the daily variation in gravity circuit gold recovery, as the site knows whether the changes are due to gravity circuit equipment performance, or due to the natural variation of ore GRG contents. Maintenance planning can also be designed around the system, as the site will have a composite sample to measure the performance of the circuit, therefore indicating where performance has dropped and maintenance is needed. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a process by which coal is converted in situ to a combustible gas that can be used as a fuel or chemical feedstock. The process has been used in commercial-size projects in the former Soviet Union for more than 40 years, while significant national research programs have been undertaken in the United States and Western Europe. The Chinchilla UCG project is located at a site southeast of Chinchilla in Queensland. The UCG operation commenced in December 1999. A controlled shutdown of the process was initiated in January 2002 and successfully completed in April 2003. The process is currently under conservation and ready for restoration of gas production for commercial use in the near future. Groundwater plays an important role in the gas formation process during UCG. Most of the process water required for chemical reactions is usually derived from the coal seam itself and from surrounding aquifers. If insufficient water is available for chemical reactions the UCG gas will contain reduced concentrations of combustible components, and conversely, excessive water influx into the process area would cool down the reactor and thus limit the energy available for gas production reactions. Because of the importance of groundwater in the gasification reactions, and the potential to contaminate groundwater if the process is not correctly controlled, it is essential to predict and to control the groundwater influx into underground gasifiers during and after underground gasification. Control of groundwater requires a thorough understanding of hydrogeological conditions in the vicinity of the gasifier in order to be able to predict inflow rates, and constant monitoring throughout the process of water production rates and groundwater pressure in the coal seam and adjacent aquifers. Hydrogeological testing and groundwater monitoring in the vicinity of the UCG operation commenced six months in advance of its initiation. Monitoring of groundwater pressures in the vicinity of the gasifier have also been undertaken using vibrating wire piezometers installed in the coal seam at varying distances from the gasifier. This paper presents the results of the hydrogeological testing and groundwater quality monitoring carried out at the site, which show that it is possible to operate a UCG process without uncontrolled impacts on groundwater.

These activities include implementation of risk management systems, performing risk assessments, constructing bow-ties, implementing critical control management systems, undertaking personal, process and functional safety initiatives, implementing psychological and physical health as well as industrial hygiene programs. Despite the significant work that has occurred over the last several decades, unacceptable levels of fatalities, injuries and illnesses continue to persist as evidenced by Safe Work Australia statistics.

Health and safety are the first priority for Australian minerals sector. Australia has a global reputation in the mining industry. However, accidents occur every year. Legislation and regulation are important to prevent the accident from occurring, so do the new technologies. It is sad to witness the collision incident persisting and the long called collision avoidance system (CAS) is still not widely used in underground mines. The main reason is that the existing systems are still not advanced enough. The current CASs utilise GPS, infrared, ultrasonic, RFID, Radar, electromagnetic etc have their limitations and disadvantages. For instance, GPS is widely used in a surface mine, but it cannot be applied in underground mine; Infrared and electromagnetic have the false positive problem.

EcoTechnology refers to a series of potential metallurgical processes for complex ores, concentrates, tailings and slags that are all based on an initial chlorination step at low to moderate temperatures probably in a fluid bed chlorinator (FBC). Examples of the research and development (R&D) results are provided in this paper for a high grade Au/Sb Leach Tailings (EcoGold<sub>®</sub> Process), a very refractory sulphide Au concentrate, a refractory gold calcine tailings, a Cu/Au tailings (EcoCopper<sub>®</sub> Process), bulk polymetallic sulphide concentrates and polymetallic sulphide/oxide complex ores (EcoZinc<sub>®</sub> Process and EcoLead<sub>®</sub> Process). R&D on over thirty different ore types has been conducted at a bench scale as discussed. Latterly a dedicated pilot plant was designed and constructed by EcoTech Mining Pty Ltd (EML) and several of the different feed stock results have been confirmed by pilot plant testing. It is planned to scale up to a commercial demonstration plant. To demonstrate the versatility of EcoTechnology, bench and pilot plant test results on five of the projects are used as case studies as follows: Fosterville ‘leach tailing’, VIC; Wiluna flotation concentrate – BIOX Feed, WA; Wiluna calcine facility tailings, WA; Mt Morgan Cu/Au tailings, QLD; Polymetallic sulphide concentrates from Pegmont Deposit, QLD and Polymetallic sulphide/oxide ores from Commonwealth Mine Project, NSW. There are many small to medium carbonate hosted complex zinc containing deposits where the zinc is not economically recoverable either as concentrate or metal. High grade (>20% Zn) run of mine ore can be processed but even this material gives relatively poor returns. Considerable effort has gone into developing new technology for either upgrading the ore and/or recovering zinc metal hydrometallurgically but there has been limited success. Minetometal has developed a process capable of economically treating these deposits to give marketable lead and zinc products. Uncertainties in large open pit geotechnical modelling has been a major concern for slope stability analysis. The level of confidence in the in-put assumptions, such as structural and rock mass model, dictates the modelling results to some extent. This article is to detail a case study of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) regarding a predicted inter-ramp failure on an as-built pit walls by a 3D numerical modelling. Significant concerns were raised across site and multiple preventive plans were considered. After intense data collection work, it was confirmed that the risk of failure had been overestimated. The case study has improved the understanding of geotechnical data in-put and has enhanced the process of creating and updating geotechnical structural models at KCGM.

Current mineral extraction and valorisation activities still have a strong focus on the ‘delivered product(s)’ which might be a bulk commodity such as metallurgical coal, hematite, bauxite, etc., and mineral concentrates such as metal sulphides, oxides, and carbonates; precious metals, such as gold, silver and PGMs, REEs or battery metals; halogen salt forming elements; or industrial minerals, which are non-metals including crushed rock, sand, and gravel etc. With the current focus on tailings disposal the pushback has been to seek alternatives to the currently ‘conventional’ disposal method via increasingly higher risk tailings settling facilities (TSFs) with a changing focus towards ‘dry disposal’. Whichever option is selected, the alarming trend is the increasing cost and ESG impacts. An emerging approach is to pose a focusing question ‘Is there anything else passing into the tailings stream and/or disposable waste streams which could be recovered and pass into the product revenue stream? All of the above ‘primary’ process streams offer opportunities for increasing recovery and offsetting some of the disposal costs. Some secondary opportunities are already being pursued, such as REEs and battery metals from base metals deposits, but other opportunities are still being overlooked, such as building materials and soil conditioning pellets. These potential ‘new’ product streams can also utilise other mining and domestic wastes such as smelting slags, glass waste, plastic waste etc. This paper will address these opportunities and provide examples including process approach, economics and some of the current barriers that exist, which are holding back progress on such initiatives.

The key skills for a competent geologist are observation, documentation, analytical thought and the ability to communicate. These attributes have served the geological world for the past two centuries since the field of geology was separated out from natural philosophy. The understanding of the structural setting, lithologies, alteration and 3D distribution of the target mineral species are essential precursors to resource evaluation and potential economic extraction. The advent of artificial intelligence and machine learning has matured to the point where observation by dedicated sensors and analysis by customised AI algorithms can replace manual processes and deliver credible results. In combination with analytical data such as assays, various sensors now collect physical properties of rocks which are used as proxies for mineral identification and rock mass classification. These sensors include X-ray and infra-red spectra, magnetic susceptibility, gravity/density, EH/pH measurements, conductivity, colourimetric readings, porosity, fracturing and fracture intensity. Analysis using machine learning techniques trained using known data sets can determine rock type classification, rock density, quantification of grade/quality attributes, mineral alteration, weathering and geotechnical attributes such as rock quality. This type of data relies on calibration and quality control of a variety of different types of electronic hardware. The resulting data is non-additive, has error ranges and will be suitable for consumption by fast AI methods providing probabilistic analysis. A second stage could include geometallurgical constraints to provide an ‘extractability index’, which is of more interest to miners than pure geotyping. Using resultant interpreted geological criteria, 3D domain models with spatial attributes will be built.

The mining industry seeks to engage with and respond to stakeholders through open consultation processes during the various phases of a mining project (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, 2006). Two Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects conducted in the Bowen Basin coalfields in Central Queensland investigated the use of a stakeholder panel for the evaluation of mine site rehabilitation. The panel members were drawn from the local and regional area, and represented neighbouring landholders, traditional owners, AgForce, local government, conservation groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Greening Australia and the Fitzroy Basin Association. The approach of utilising stakeholders to establish rehabilitation criteria was proposed as an alternative to the established practice of assessing rehabilitated areas against a suite of quantitative completion criteria; eg >70 per cent vegetative ground cover or <5 t/ha/a soil loss. The basis of this approach recognises the reality that the definition of completion criteria has proved problematic over the last 40 years with no broad consensus reached on the suite, let alone the metrics; eg the exact cover level that will benchmark acceptance of the mine site rehabilitation.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2016. This extended abstract and associated presentation provide a series of real examples of the complex interactions between the numerous input parameters, both geological and mathematical, that are required for resource estimation. Many of these parameters can contain a large degree of uncertainty at the initial resource stage. The resource tonnages and grades at economic cut offs of some types of deposits are relatively robust to these initial uncertainties while others exhibit significant sensitivity. In some cases, changes in parameters can result in counter-intuitive outcomes. Grades and confidence levels are inseparable; as the parameters change the confidence changes and so does the grade estimate. Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.During the environmental impact assessment and project development phase, Nautilus completed a number of hydrodynamic modelling exercises in order to predict the nature, volume and extent of the plumes likely to be generated by the sea floor mining tools and return water discharge at the sea floor.The modelling was conducted using the suspended sediment fate model (SSFATE), developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and RPS APASA engineering consultants. The SSFATE model was originally developed in order to predict and manage dredging plumes, and has since been adapted for deep ocean sea floor mining. The model uses a Lagrangian approach to remove the limitations of grid resolution, and simulates far-field effects of sedimentation plumes by assuming that the average transport and turbulence associated with currents are dominant over the initial turbulence at the release point. The random walk procedure utilised in the model tracks particle size classes as they disperse and settle, and also takes into consideration any re-suspension that may occur following settlement (RPS APASA, 2014).CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. Other than being reasonably certain of the average vertical stress being lithostatic, there can be little certainty about stress in the ground. The stresses and strains in rock are a function of gravitational effects, external load, thermal changes, diagenesis and their mechanical properties including elastic, creep and post failure behaviours. It is highly desirable to measure stress where mining is going to take place, even if the virgin stress condition has already been changed by mining. The concept of some far field stress value that is more or less constant is usually invalid and can be dangerous to use in mine design. Measuring stress is not simple. The basic processes are broken into two categories, one where the rock will not fail around the borehole in which the stress is being measured and one where the rock has failed or will fail. Because of the complexity and cost in obtaining a single, precise stress measurement it is highly desirable to have some system to be able to obtain an idea of the uniformity, or otherwise of the stress situation between precise measurements. Table 1 shows the methods for measuring stress. The first five methods work on the basis of some fairly direct measurement of mechanical rock behaviour while the last three are attempts to get some idea of stress out of core long after it is removed from the host rock. While these latter methods appear to tick all the boxes for applicability there is a great deal of uncertainty in the results that they deliver. This paper reviews the methods for measuring stress and presents two new methods. These are a three dimensional overcore system to provide precise stress measurements in rocks that will not fail around the borehole and a core ovality system. The latter can be used to provide information on the stress difference orthogonal to the core. It is particularly useful because it can be used every metre of core length.

In the fields of geotechnical engineering and slope management, various software packages are used to assess the behaviour or propensity for a slope to fail. Traditional kinematic analysis calculates the probability of failure of design sectors with respect to dominant structural set orientations. A novel methodology is provided here to view potential hazardous slope behaviour in 3D, allowing engineers to make informed decisions regarding various pit slope geometries. Apparent dips are calculated for every point in space with respect to every slope orientation of the entire pit surface/design, specifically in reference to bench and inter-ramp planar failure mechanisms. Implementing a proactive approach to slope design will not only lead to early mitigation of risk but can also add direct value by enhancing or improving upon slope angles for earlier access to ore. From a safety perspective, identification of unfavourably oriented slope geometries can be dealt with before failure occurs. This methodology relies on a strong understanding of the existing rock mass anisotropy, particularly behind the face, thereby removing some of the uncertainty surrounding pit design as well as presenting engineers with an additional means to manage risk.

"Mining is an inherently risky business: from the technical, environmental, social and economic uncertainties associated with advancing an exploration concept to a viable project; to the risks associated with the operating, market, and safety risks and uncertainties attached to a developed mine; and the final mine closure process.Investors and other stakeholders assessing the risk, opportunity and relative value associated with a resource project need to appreciate the project in its correct context. Over much of Australia, rainfall is highly seasonal and storm-driven. Consequently, operational mines often need extensive earthworks – drains, dams and levees – for protection during the occasional large floods and for water storage against the dry times; however, it has not been appreciated that many of these earthworks will need to function after mining has finished, sometimes, beyond a normal design life for engineered structures.While a mine is operating, standards for design and maintenance are dictated by regulation and risk assessment. For dams and levees – regulated structures – the standards imposed mainly relate to life-of-mine. The levels of risk and maintenance accepted by the mine operator may not be acceptable to another landholder in perpetuity. However, the Environmental Authority cannot be surrendered unless the landholder has accepted responsibility for any unrehabilitated regulated structures (Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (DEHP), 2016).In order for a future landholder to be willing to take responsibility for a dam or levee, the structure should be of value to the business of the property. For a geometallurgical program to be successful, linkage must be made between the geologists and geostaticians who understand and model the orebody, the metallurgists who determine the value that can be extracted from the different geometallurgical units, and the mine planners who develop and optimise the plan to extract maximum economic value from the resource. One of the primary purposes of geometallurgical models is in the determination of the economic cut-off between ore and waste. Recognition of the level of confidence required in the estimation of grade, throughput and recovery is critical to the planning of a successful geometallurgical program. It also helps clarify the scope of work needed to mitigate risk at each stage in the development of a new mine projectThis presentation provides some of the author’s experience with development and application of geometallurgical models for existing base metal operations. It discusses how geological units defined by lithology, structure, alteration etc, can be translated into geometallurgical ore types defined by mineralogy, ore hardness, and flotation behaviour. Examples of how these characteristics have been used to estimate key economic parameters such as mill throughput and flotation recovery at two brown-field operations are provided. The first example relates to the modelling of metallurgical performance at Teck’s Red Dog zinc-lead mine in Alaska. Prior to 2000, zinc, lead and silver recoveries from a block of ore at Red Dog were either assumed constant, or were varied according to simplistic models. Throughput was not thought to vary substantially between blocks, so an average value was used for each blended stockpile. It is quite possible that some ore-value blocks were classified as waste, and some waste-value blocks treated as ore, as a result of poor understanding of the true economic cut off across the wide range of ore types observed at Red Dog. After an extensive flotation test program, the first assay-based zinc recovery model was developed for the Main pit reserve in 2003.**This is an abstract only. IonicRE acknowledges within our mining industry, there is a common belief that workplace health and safety, often referred to as safety, is just a matter of ‘common sense’ – something obvious and easy. However, at IonicRE, we hold a different perspective. We understand that safety is far from easy. We recognise the need to emphasise the importance of understanding and conveying the inherent difficulties of working safely. We are committed to implementing processes that support individuals in achieving our safety objective of eliminating fatalities and permanently disabling injuries. To build resilience and sustainability into safety performance, we draw parallels with the principles underpinning sustainable and exceptional production performance. Achieving sustainable safety performance demands effective leadership, meticulous planning, adept management, genuine care and unwavering commitment. We’ve leveraged various tools and techniques, such as DISC theory, Maslow’s hierarchy, process control, Kaizen, Six Sigma and Kirkpatrick’s 4 levels, among others, to facilitate this improvement. There methods play a pivotal role in developing a Safety Blueprint for enhanced safety performance. This paper provides an overview of IonicRE’s Safety Blueprint, a strategic framework for developing our safety capability. Our capability is underpinned by three key pillars. Firstly, a comprehensive risk management approach is imperative, encompassing the understanding of hazards, the identification of threats to our people and the associated risks. Secondly, it entails providing and enforcing accountability to sustain our safety capability. Lastly, it involves constructing an effective defence system against threats and harm. Implementing these pillars requires a meticulously devised change process. Anticipating resistance and potential setbacks, we underscore the importance of having the right people and a wellcommunicated vision for safety at IonicRE. A Safety Blueprint serves as a detailed plan outlining the path toward a future goal. At IonicRE, we contend that safety in the mining industry has generally lacked a coherent and effective Safety Blueprint – a comprehensive plan to navigate the journey toward a destination. Drawing parallels with NASA’s detailed plan for landing a man on the moon safely, we question why, as an industry, we cannot similarly eliminate fatalities. While progress has been made in the last century, we must not wait another 50 years to eradicate fatalities from our industry. Examining Safe Work Australia data from 2008 reveals that 47 per cent of mining fatalities result from vehicle activity and 40 per cent stem from individuals being struck by an object. As of December 7, 2023, seven lives have been lost in the mining industry in Australia this year, indicating a stubborn trend mirroring 2022, with limited improvement over the past 25 years. These incidents are not isolated or unexpected. We understand the hazards and controls, yet fatalities persist. IonicRE considers that the mining industry stands at a critical juncture – do we accept a plateau in mining safety performance, or do we rethink our approach? At IonicRE, we are thoroughly reassessing the hazards that threaten our people, systematically redefining effective risk control measures and establishing a robust framework to hold individuals accountable for the effective implementation of the control measure.
