In the field of mineral extraction, complex technologies are being introduced in mines, operators/technicians rely on assistance from an expert (or more) in order to keep their machines functioning. Personnel with such expertise, however, are not always physically on-site. There is a growing need for innovative technological solutions to support effective delivery, just in time, of remote guidance between an offsite expert and an on-site maintenance operator. To meet this need, we have, as part of our Human System Integration project within the CSIRO’s Minerals Down Under (MDU), Transforming the Future Mine theme, explored the usefulness of a number of emerging technologies including: augmented reality, wearable systems and touch table interfaces. This paper presents ReMoTe, an augmented realty system for remote guiding using a touch table interface for the expert station and a combination of augmented reality and a wearable system at the operator end. In designing this system we were interested in exploring the extent to which it can increase the productivity and safety of maintenance personnel. This paper also presents Mobile ReMote, our recent development of a fully mobile remote guiding system. In Mobile ReMote, both the expert and the operator are using a near eye display and wearing a light computer in a back pack. The expert is able to guide the operator using his/her hands on the virtual display, while the operator is able to see the instructions on the rear eye display. Workers in the mining industry are highly mobile, a mobile expert and operator station will meet this need.

The Energy Authority of NSW has wide powers and responsibilities conferred by its Act which are pertinent to the State's coal industry and its development into the next century. With respect to coal, the broad objective is to maximise the benefits to NSW and its people derived from the State's coal resources. The initial focus of the Authority's coal-related activities in the late 70's and early 80's was on petroleum substitutes from coal. Research was supported, especially on hydrogenation, and the Authority participated in the Joint Australia/Federal Republic of Germany coal-to-oil feasibility study. It also co-ordinated a State Government initiative to involve the private sector in examining the possible establishment of a synthetic fuels industry based on Hunter Valley coal. With a short-fall in world-wide petroleum supply now seen as less likely for some years, the Authority is looking also at ways of working towards the broad objective in the field of coal utilisation on both domestic and export markets. Areas of interest include possibilities for using washery rejects, means of making NSW coal more competitive as an energy source, use of coal-seam gas and new or special technologies for burning coal. The future is expected to see renewed interest in producing petroleum substitutes, and coal - as the State's major energy resource - is seen as a strong contender as a basis for such an industry. Developments in coal-based power generation are also expected to have an impact, with advanced technologies having a possible place here as well as Overseas.

The Airborne Thematic Mapper is an eleven channel digital scanner which acquires image data in the visible, near infra-red, short wave infra-red and thermal infra-red wave- lengths. A description of the system is presented which includes details of the operating wavelengths and performance parameters of the scanner. Consideration is also given to the aircraft installation requirements. During January 1984 the scanner surveyed the mineral rich areas of Leonora, Laverton and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. This is a region of intense exploration activity for gold and base metals. Some 30,000 square kilometres were systematically surveyed in a period of ten days. This scanner was flown at 7,000 metres altitude giving a ground pixel size of 17.5 by 17.5 metres. The flight line spacing was 8 kilometres. The overall project took some thirty days from conception to completion. The planning and execution of this operation are described in detail. The resulting magnetic tapes provided 11 channels of digital image data over a 30,000 square kilometre area and a variety of image processing techniques were employed in order to capitalise fully on the results. The imagery provides a powerful tool for the geological mapping of the terrain. The data can also be used to monitor the environmental effects of mining operations.

The ironmaking industry consumes a large amount of fossil fuel derived carbon as heat source, reducing agent of iron ores and carburising agent of reduced iron. Although the demand for drastic decrease of carbon dioxide emission, carbon is an essential element for smelting process of molten iron. The carbon recycling ironmaking process by circulating CO has been already proposed to achieve carbon neutrality. However, the production of molten hot metal is not considered in this process because sufficient amount of carbon does not dissolve in reduced iron by CO. Therefore, our group has suggested a new carbon recycling ironmaking process which can produce hot metal. In this process, free carbon and iron carbides produced by carbon deposition reaction using metallic iron as a catalyst are used. It is known that only Fe3C is obtained as iron carbide by using CO gas, however, Fe5C2 is also produced by adding H2 gas. The composite agglomerated with these carbonaceous materials and fine iron ore (Deposited Carbon-Iron oxide Composite: DCIC) is reduced and melted in a furnace. It is reported that Fe3C in DCIC accelerates the reduction reaction and melting of the composite. In this study, the effects of iron carbides and free carbon on the melting behaviour of DCIC are investigated. Fe3C, Fe5C2 and free carbon were produced by vapour deposition using porous iron whiskers and CO-CO2-H2 gas. These were agglomerated with hematite reagent at a certain ratio to prepare DCIC samples with and without Fe5C2. The samples were heated up to 1300°C in inert atmosphere. The DCIC containing Fe5C2 completely melted and iron nuggets were obtained after the experiment. This behaviour was not observed in the composite without Fe5C2. This indicates that using Fe5C2 is more preferable than Fe3C for molten iron production using DCIC.

A custom-made set-up that measures bubble coalescence time and the thin film balance (TFB) technique were used to explore the role of residual xanthate (potassium amyl xanthate, PAX) and salt (NaCl) on the adsorption of two frothers (methyl isobutyl carbinol-MIBC, and di-propylene glycolDPG) at the air-water interface. This paper is primarily focused on the comparison of these two techniques in studying the interaction between the flotation reagents and salt emphasizing their capabilities and limits. The results from the coalescence rig showed that the presence of PAX improved the stability of bubbles in both frother solutions and led to a bubble coalescence inhibition at 50–500 ppm DPG. These measures were compared with the results from the TFB. Findings from the TFB were overall in good agreement with the bubble coalescence time, but a higher stability level was observed in thin films under the same condition. The effect of salt on the frother and PAX mixture was also explored, and the results showed an adverse impact of the salt on the interaction of frother and PAX with both techniques. However, variations were found between them in some cases. The TFB is much more sensitive to the presence of dissolved gas and oil droplets.

Thank you and good morning. I am delighted to be here and to see so many of my colleagues and competitors. The general topic of this week's conference - World's Best Practice in Mining and Processing - suggests a focus on mining and processing. I am somewhat of a `jack of all trades and a master of none'. But I'm not even a jack when it comes to mining and processing technology and practices, and so I will leave those topics to speakers better 'qualified than I. Instead, what I would like to do is give you my thoughts on the best management practices of mining. You see, the times are changing for the mining business. There is great uncertainty in our industry. Anyone who received their education in an English-speaking school probably remembers the famous poem `Invictus' by William Ernest Henley. The two most famous lines from that poem are, if you remember, `I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul'. The fact of the matter is that the metals industry, including the copper industry, is not the master of its fate. To a great extent we're at the mercy of forces over which we have little control, such as the world economy or political situations in individual countries. The copper industry is like a surfer at Manly - we can't influence where the wave is going; all we can do is stay in front of the curl and on our board. Historically, discovering, developing and processing ore reserves were the primary facets of our capital intensive business. To stay competitive today, we must invest equally in intellectual capital - our employees - in order to succeed in the face of economic, regulatory and political challenges and global competition (Schonberger, 1986). Everyone seems to have a different theory about being competitive. A lot of people use sports analogies when talking about competition. Others, like American businessman and former US presidential wanna-be Ross Perot, take a more interesting approach. In Mr Perot's hypothetical corporation, competition is a lot like having a snake in a factory. If someone sees a snake, the first thing they do is create a committee on snakes. Then, the committee on snakes meets and discusses the problem for a couple of years. The most likely course of action is nothing. Everyone figures that the snake hasn't bitten anyone yet, so they just let him crawl around the factory floor. Perhaps a vice president of serpentine affairs is appointed to continue watching the snake - making sure it doesn't grow. Ross Perot sees it a little differently. In his corporate world, business needs to build an environment where the first guy who sees the snake kills it. Of course in our industry, we better make sure the snake isn't on an Endangered Species List before we go after it! I am not going to talk about competition and competitive forces in terms of sports or snakes, but I would like to share some thoughts with you about how the mining industry can better utilise competitive thinking to get ahead and stay there. You may be wondering how an executive from a 160-year-old company could know much about competitive spirit, but the founding ancestors of Phelps Dodge were wizards at identifying

This presentation addresses the sources and weighting of project risk in coarse gold deposits with relevance to experiences at the Ballarat mine and Castlemaine goldfield. With sample representation and reliability often a source of great error in the resource estimation of coarse gold deposits, it follows that this matter should be of greatest risk to a mining project - but is it? What are the costs and efforts required to best quantify the sampling error due to nuggetty effect? After all, the main problem in Victorian gold mining ventures in the current decade is not the amount of gold available, but defi ning which portion of it can be converted to Ore Reserves or more so profitable gold bars. The author postulates that greater risk to the project lies in the geological interpretation and matching resource spatial parameters to mining methods, than the degree of uncertainty related to grade due to nuggetty gold. Recent experience in the Victorian goldfi elds is that the investor market has already severely discounted Mineral Resources reported in accordance with The JORC Code - so if they don't believe in the capacity to upgrade the resource why should we? To this end, Castlemaine Goldfi elds Ltd at its Ballarat gold project does not intend to estimate its gold mineralisation for public release, instead choosing to focus on the geological interpretation and mine planning elements. So with coarse gold deposits, is your Mineral Resource reported with The JORC Code a glass half full or half empty? Our mining forefathers in Victoria had no predictive tools which could define resources to any degree and yet were successful. By over emphasis on the definition of mineral resources and particularly the sampling error, are we ignoring the basics of cost control, solid geological interpretations and maximum mining flexibility. The Kunwarara magnesite deposit is the largest known magnesite (MgCO3) deposit in Australia. It is located under black soil plains to the north of Rockhampton in Queensland. The deposit consists of magnesite nodules set in a fine-grained sandstone, siltstone and mudstone matrix. The magnesite is derived from weathering of serpentinite in adjacent hills and transport of magnesium in solution to a Tertiary/Quaternary river system. The magnesium has come out of solution in the active river system, and combined with atmospheric and biogenic CO2 to form magnesite nodules. The magnesite can be very pure with certain varieties up to 98 per cent MgO (LOI free). The deposit has been mined since 1991 and processed into magnesia (MgO) which is sold into refractory, agricultural and other markets. The geologist is an integral part of the small mine technical team. The role of the geologist includes characterisation of the ore through drilling and bulk sampling, supervision of geological aspects of mining and assistance in the optimisation of ore processing.

Open pit operators are facing a number of challenges in the area of blasting and blasting processes, such as wall control, quality of fragmentation, explosives consumption and vibration. Remaining financially viable is one of the most significant objectives for mining professionals as they work through the blasting challenges within the mining chain of processes. This objective is such a significant challenge, primarily due to the high consumption of materials and the direct consequences on the downstream processes in the mining work flow, including loading, hauling, crushing, milling and mineral concentration. This paper reviews and discusses a technique to achieve this objective, namely air-decking. The performance in a number of mines around the world is reviewed focusing on the economic contributions of air-deck blasting. Various scenarios are investigated and simulated, covering both conventional and air-deck blasting, using JKSimblast software. The scenarios explore a range of issues and found that optimum results could be achieved with a minimum amount of explosives. The results obtained from the simulations were verified with blasts at Rixs Creek Coal Mine, Australia. Based on the verification results the simulations were then modified to more accurately model the actual conditions and parameters on site and to ensure that the models derived meet the production and control requirements at the mine site. Ultimately, overall analysis and comparisons were applied to the outcomes of the conventional and air-decking blasts revealing a reduction in material consumption of around 25 per cent with consequential savings and up to a 30 per cent reduction in ground vibration.CITATION:Abdalla, M A, Laing, T and Hagan, P, 2012. The recovery and concentration of ultra-fine iron ore can provide significant economic benefits. Presently, there are limited options available given the low settling rates achieved by conventional gravity separation and the relatively poor performance of reverse flotation. The Reflux Classifier is a new water-based gravity separation technology that consists of a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. This arrangement promotes a powerful throughput advantage compared to conventional fluidisation and a highly selective hydrodynamic basis for achieving sharp separations. A high shear rate develops within the inclined channels, which generates sufficient hydrodynamic lift to convey the lower-density particles (even if they are relatively coarse) to overflow while retaining the high-density particles (even those that are ultra-fine) for discharge to the underflow. The technology has previously been used around the world on particle sizes in excess of 0.1 mm. The present work, however, is concerned with density-based separations down to much finer particle sizes approaching 0.01 mm.A major advantage of the Reflux Classifier technology is the achievement of simultaneous gravity separation and desliming via a single-stage separation. A series of continuous experiments was conducted using an iron ore feed with head grade of 35 wt per cent FeT and nominal top size of 0.106 mm, with 59 wt per cent being below 0.038 mm in size. At a low throughput of 1.5 t/(m2 h), the Reflux Classifier produced high-grade products at a high recovery. For the entire feed, grades of 66.1 wt per cent FeT with Fe recoveries of 80 per cent were achieved in a single-stage separation. Within the 0.020–0.038 mm size fraction, grades of 68.8 per cent were achieved with iron recoveries of 94.7 per cent. Excellent recoveries of up to 57.0 per cent were achieved for the -0.020 mm size fraction. The ability of the inclined channels to retain the fine dense material further enhances the effectiveness of the Reflux Classifier by creating an autogenous dense medium effect within the vertical section. "The need for suitable geotechnical characterisation of the rock mass for underground construction is evident. The enlargement project of Railways of the Generalitat of Catalunya (FGC) in Sabadell is a patent example.In general, it is uncommon to encounter problems in the identification and characterisation of certain relevant weak rock formations, which affect project designs. However, all materials should be properly studied, as mischaracterisation can lead to a suboptimal design, resulting in construction problems during the course of the work.Good quality rock is generally not difficult to characterise, but this is not the case for Quaternary or Tertiary cemented soils. Geotechnical investigations based on boreholes do not provide enough information because samples are often badly damaged during the drilling process, if appropriate techniques are not taken. The samples can be altered and may not be representative of the in situ?material.The design and construction of the extension to the FGC line in Sabadell highlighted the importance of the characterisation of Quaternary and Tertiary cemented soils, in particular their rigidity and its underestimation. The twin tunnel project had a total length of 5.1 km, including five stations with 3.5 km excavated by tunnel boring machine (TBM). The remaining 1.6 km was constructed using cut and cover methods. The TBM portion of the tunnel had a bored diameter of 6.83 m with an internal radius of 3 m and 0.25 m thick precast concrete segments. Much of the tunnel alignment passed through and was affected by the presence of certain stiff layers of Quaternary cohesive materials.In this paper the TBM challenges faced will be discussed in detail. In particular:  TBM excavation rate reductions and overheating problems due to the required excessive thrust and torque floating problems in the lining due to nil earth pressure over the rings and the development of an improved, controlled setting time mortar to address this issue block-in and block-out methodology for each station, in some cases with internal blocks to prevent earth pressure drops and soil scouring the relevance of performing simpler solutions, for example, hyperbaric interventions to examine the cutter wheel tools when it has been shown that interventions under atmospheric conditions were equally feasible the implementation of conventional bivalve machines as standard procedure for excavation of diaphragm walls in stations, where in fact, hydrocutter machines or pile boring machines may have been required, given the mechanical characteristics of the materials to be dug out.CITATION:Justa Cámara, R and María Bertrán Llop, J, 2014. Since the early 1990s it has been evident that electricity demand has outstripped investment in generation and transmission. At the same time, concerns were being expressed about the risks associated with the run down of the Maui gas field. It is axiomatic that the necessary investments firstly require a stable and supportive regulatory and fiscal environment, and secondly that such investments have long lead times. A unwillingness by successive Governments to fund the necessary infrastructure, however, lead to the profound restructuring of the electricity with the ultimate objective of transferring the investment risk from Government to the private sector. Successive power crises since 1992 result from a failure to put in place a regulatory framework necessary to provide the environment to allow the private sector to make the needed investments within the necessary timeframe. The electricity sector has now stabilised to the extent that the regulatory risks associated with generation investment have been reduced. This does not mean that risk has been eliminated, however, and both economic and environmental issues will continue to constrain investment in some power proposals particularly those in the South Island and especially any South Island coal or gas thermal proposal. This is firstly because of several very simple economic issues:  1. while the South Island may have significant coal resources it lacks a significant electricity market; 2. except for a six to ten week period in a dry year, low cost hydro will price any large-scale South Island thermal out of the market which will restrict any large scale thermal station to a dry year and/or peaking load; 3. except for a six to ten week period in a dry year, export capacity on the HVDC link to the North Island is constrained to around 964 MWe (and 482 MWe from North to South in dry years); and 4. construction of any new thermal plant in the northern half of the North Island will price any South Island thermal station out of the market. There are also significant environmental issues associated with the establishment of a large scale thermally based power station in the South Island. Because the South Island lacks any large scale economically proven gas reserves, the environmental constraints considered are those associated with coal production. A coal mine dedicated to power generation will have significant on-site impacts associated, in particular those associated with disposal of opencast overburden and visual impacts. These will, however, be partially offset by the relative remoteness of such sites to population centres. What cannot be offset, however, is the off-site impacts, in particular, CO2, SOx and NOx emissions, water disposal and acid mine drainage.

Draw control at Premier Mine is considered important to avoid conditions of isolated draw, which results in early waste ingress, compaction of the kimberlite ore and loss of ore reserves. The Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is unique in that the pipe is cut at a depth of 400 metres below surface by a 75 metre thick gabbro sill. All cave mining at Premier is below the sill and failure to exercise good draw control could cause early ingress of gabbro waste. Gabbro causes problems in the diamond recovery plant and the amount of gabbro sent to the plant needs to be closely monitored. Fortunately coarse gabbro fragments are easy to recognise in drawpoints. It was anticipated that only 85 per cent of available ore would be drawn from the blocks immediately overlain by the gabbro sill before excessive gabbro waste forced the closure of drawpoints. Data on tons drawn per drawpoint and loaded per LHD as well as the tons tipped per pass is gathered by the vehicle monitoring and control (VMAC) system and information recorded by the load-haul-dump (LHD) drivers. Draw control staff monitor drawpoints on a shift basis and record the occurrence, type and height of hang-ups. Information pertaining to the status of the drawpoint in terms of support, waste and availability is also recorded. A database has been compiled that has been used to analyse the overall pattern of draw control, the frequency of occurrence of different types of hang-ups, secondary blasting efficiencies and drawpoint and LHD productivity. The gabbro sill has provided a unique marker horizon that has allowed the arrival of rock from a level 100 metres above the production level to be recognised. Data shows that ore migrates extensively towards groups of drawpoints that are heavily drawn with many drawpoints more than 100 per cent drawn before gabbro waste was recognised. This indicates that an accurate mixing algorithm is essential for good draw control. Data on tons drawn, drawpoint availability, productivity and the occurrence of various types of hang-ups has allowed better control of the mining operation and provided data for planning future caves. In the BA5 mining block a drawpoint spacing of 22 metres, horizontally across the major apex, has still allowed drawpoints to be pulled to waste with no loss of ore. In the BB1E mining block the drawpoint spacing has been increased to 23 metres and no problems have been experienced to-date. Future initiatives centre on improving the data gathering integrity of the vehicle monitoring and control system and a linear programme that will optimise draw control and productivity.

With the depletion of high-quality ores, the efficiency of extracting difficult gold ores through flotation and leaching becomes very important in the mining industry. Iron contaminants, sulfide and carbonaceous coatings on the surface of gold and gold bearing minerals significantly hinder the recovery of gold during gold processing. As the surface of gold minerals is easily contaminated, coatings of iron oxides and iron hydroxides originated from the grinding process and oxidation of iron sulfides will cause a retarding effect on both gold flotation and leaching.To mitigate the processing issues caused by undesirable surface coatings on gold minerals, a new technology in treating surface coatings of iron contaminants has been developed. The pulp potential and pH of the slurry are altered to allow dissolution of surface coatings which are further excluded by the use of complexing reagents. The current work shows that iron contaminants can be removed from the surfaces of gold through Eh-pH adjustment and chelation which result in significantly improved gold flotation response. The addition of complexants aids the formation of iron chelates to prevent the iron species in the solution from forming iron oxide and iron hydroxide in the flotation conditions.CITATION:Wei, R and Peng, Y, 2014. The effect of using SO2 as an anodic depolariser in the electrowinning of copper from aqueous acid sulphate solutions has been studied using cells without/with a ceramic diaphragm. In all cases SO2-saturation of the electrolyte/anolyte decreased the anode potential by 68 to 75 per cent largely due to a change in the anode reaction from the oxidation of water to the oxidation of SO2 . However, poor quality deposits and low current efficiencies are encountered if SO2 is allowed free-access to the copper being deposited at the cathode. This situation is easily avoided by using a diaphragm to restrict SO2 to the anode compartment and for these conditions the resultant copper deposits are of a similar (high) quality to those obtained in the absence of SO2.

The commercial production of copper metal involves a sequence of purification stages. One step of this process eliminates bulk quantities of iron and sulphur from matte Cu2S(FeS to produce blister containing 95.5 per cent copper. This task is traditionally performed in the Pierce-Smith converter, a cylindrical vessel in widespread use throughout the copper industry. Typically, multiple Pierce-Smith converters are arranged along an aisle, simplifying material transfer from vessel to vessel. Materials are moved through the aisle in pots and boats, using overhead cranes. In terms of the overall process, the converter aisle represents a critical processing unitùit contributes significantly to the value added nature of the metal. The aisle is subject to significant process disturbances. Thus, improvements in the operationÆs modes and conditions have a direct impact on process profitability. As with any commercial operation, improvements are always sought to increase process performance. The general approach involves process modelling, followed by an application of control and optimisation theory to this model. The results of such a study are then applied to the real process, leading to improved performance.

The issue of flyrock is very important in the operation of all mineral extraction sites that use blasting. Unlike the other environmental effects of blasting, ground vibrations and air overpressure, flyrock is (or should be) a rare event, with severe consequences which may include damage to property, injury or fatalities. These physical consequences are often matched by a loss in public confidence in the management of the operation, mistrust and bad press. In this work a deterministic analysis of flyrock was carried out using the equations of a particle in motion with drag. The solutions to these equations were used to reproduce the curves of Lundborg et al (1975) for the relationship between flyrock boulder size and maximum ejection distance. A probabilistic approach based on Monte Carlo simulation was built up with the analytical model using published data together with local case study material. A typical quarry blast situation was modelled and estimates of safe standoff distances were determined using risk assessment techniques.

The model considers depolymerisation effects and related breakdown of the silicate network structure on the addition of metal oxides to the melts. The predicted values are in good agreement with the experimental values over the whole temperature and composition range.

Molten salt reactor (MSR) is a promising advanced reactor system aiming to the transmutation of minor actinides such as americium in order to reduce the inventory of ultimate nuclear waste. The fuel is a molten salt in which actinides are homogeneously dissolved in the liquid phase. A chloride salt may be retained for this concept, as it provides low melting point, high solubility of actinides, harder neutron spectrum. To avoid corrosion and precipitation issues, molten salt composition has to be carefully controlled with impurity content as low as possible. Obtaining pure actinide chlorides without contaminants such as oxide, oxychloride, hydroxide and water is still a challenge. To prepare actinide-bearing salt, the chlorination of actinides oxides was investigated in an unstirred reactor under flowing gas as solid-gas reaction. The carbochlorination of PuO2 were performed in the temperature range of 600 to 800°C with chlorine gas as a chlorinating agent and the presence of solid carbon. PuCl3 was successfully synthesised by this method and characterised by X-ray diffraction measurements but some impurities such as oxide phase remain inside the formed product. Refinements of anhydrous and hydrated PuCl3 phases by Le Bail method were also performed for crystalline materials definition. Conversion mainly depends on the chlorinating temperature and the contact between the oxide and the chlorinating agent. A conversion value of 70–80 per cent was achieved at 700°C from PuO2 with quite high specific surface area. The conversion rate was not improved with increasing the chlorination time. The volatilisation of Pu was observed during the carbochlorination experiments. To avoid a loss of Pu caused by sublimation, the chlorination temperature should be limited to 650°C despite that the conversion of PuO2 to PuCl3 was enhanced by increasing temperature. Both carbochlorination and hydrochlorination of AmO2 were also carried out leading to the formation of AmCl3. These first results suggest that americium oxide was chlorinated more readily than plutonium oxide. The purity of produced PuCl3 and AmCl3 still deserves further investigations.
