This paper discusses the requirements for a successful simulation modelling study, and the steps involved in the modelling process. Advantages and disadvantages of simulation are described, and a case study highlights how not to go about it. Two other case studies, for a decline truck haulage and a block caving production operation, are used to illustrate the types of variables whose impact may be investigated. Typical results are presented to indicate the sorts of presentation styles the author has found useful for conveying study results to project sponsors. Standard spreadsheet charting techniques can be very useful in this respect, but the possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the study team.

The paper describes the development and analysis of an instability database to establish a new method of slope stability assessment for U.K. surface coal mines. The concept is based upon a Stability Index, which relates to the probability of failure of a slope. This forms the basis for a geotechnical planning software package to be incorporated into a computer aided mine design system , which is currently under development.

The process of desilverising by fractional crystallisation with reflux was investigated through laboratory batch tests and continuous laboratory bench scale tests at CSIRO Clayton, to a 300 kg/hr pilot plant at Port Pine. The pilot plant built at BHAS comprised a vertical cylindrical refining column with internal diameter 250 mm and height 3.2 m, attached at the top to an off-set cylindrical stirred crystalliser tank. Crystals were made in the crystalliser by intermittent immersion of steel cold fingers, which were water cooled between immersions. Gas heat was used for melting the crystals at the base of the column and for side compensation heating. A computerised in strumentation system was employed for data logging and for controlling some critical plant operations. A mechanical device was first employed to promote counter-current plug flow of crystals down the column against the rising stream of reflux liquid, but this was found to be unsatisfactory owing to excess noise, frequent mechanical failure, and excessive accumulation of dross. Plug flow was finally promoted by pulsing the column. Low silver levels, less than 1 gitonne, were achieved with both methods of crystal transport under total reflux conditions. The pulsed column gave results for silver and bismuth which agreed with the theoretical predictions of a computer model, but there was some selective drossing of antimony. In the mechanically agitated column, excessive drossing promoted selective removal of most of the antimony and some of the bismuth, and the results after extended operation were well removed from the theoretical predictions. Plant failures and operating problems prevented the achievement of satisfactory product quality with the necessary reliability under production conditions. Other priorities necessitated the termination of the project before the process could be optimised.

Perhaps no aspect of the investigation of an ore-deposit is of greater importance to the mining geologist and engineer than a consideration of its geological structure. A thorough understanding of the type, size, shape, and arrangement of any ore-body is essential to the proper conduct of exploratory, developmental, and mining, operations. Significant as these remarks are' in relationship to ore-deposits in general, they become of paramount moment when a complex structure such as the Broken Hill Lode is in question. In this connection the use of the term "lode" as applied to the Broken Hill ore-bodies may terid to confusion of ideas among those not familiar with the field or with the literature pertaining thereto, by reason of the fact that it is generally understood that a "lode" is characterised by simple, tabular form, regular outline, defined walls, and persistent attitude. However, as the terminology is well established by common usage, itsretention appears desirable, and, for the purpose of this paper, the name "The Broken Hill Lode" refers to that complex unit which includes pre-eminently the famous ore-bodies exposed in the workings from the North Mine on the one extreme to the South Blocks (Zinc Corporation) Mine on the other.That the practical value of geological investigation, of the ore-bodies was realised by the Geological Sub-Committee of the late Scientific Society of Broken Hill is attested by the...

Sample preparation for gold samples, where the distribution and size of gold particles is often irregular, usually demands that a relatively large sample weight is taken to produce a representative sample for analysis. Traditional sample preparation of gold samples incorporated multiple stages of coarse particle size reduction followed by subdivision of the sample prior to final fine pulverising. This technique developed because of the limited equipment options available to laboratories. As a result significant errors are introduced and the final sample size being pulverised is a small fraction of the original sample weight. Three significant developments have occurred in the last 25 years to significantly improve sample preparation of gold samples: 1.  large capacity fine pulverising,2.  fine jaw crushing, and3.  whole sample coarse pulverising. In the mid-1980s an Australian manufacturer developed large capacity pulverising bowls which had the ability to reduce samples with a mass of 1.5 - 3.5 kg to a nominal 0.075 mm product in approximately three to five minutes. Laboratories were able to produce a large homogeneous pulverised sample which significantly reduced the error in sampling. However, exploration and mine samples are usually 7 to 10 kg and the sample requires a subdivision stage following crushing to produce the 3.5 kg for the pulverising step, thus introducing potential for significant error. The development of fine jaw crushing allowed particle size reduction to -2 mm which reduced the subdivision error of the bulk sample prior to fine pulverising. Subdivision of the crushed sample at -2 mm still results in potential sampling errors, where the gold particles are not sufficiently liberated to be representatively sampled. Clearly the best option would be to reduce the particle size small enough to ensure a representative sample prior to final pulverising. Continuous mills offer a partial solution but are relatively slow and subject the sample to differential pulverising prior to subdivision. Clearly this does not provide the best solution for routine laboratory applications where high volumes of samples are to be processed. The recent development of a large capacity coarse pulverising system allows samples of up to 10 kg to be reduced to -0.25 mm prior to subdivision, and fine pulverised to -0.075 mm. Laboratories now have the necessary equipment to perform reliable large capacity sample preparation of gold samples. The exact choice of a sample preparation scheme may still depend on particular ore types but the need for multiple crushing and subdivision stages is redundant.

The Trent-Severn Waterway is a 386 km long navigation route through central Ontario between Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay, and is operated by the Parks Canada Agency. Its primary focus is to pass recreational boats through a system of 44 locks. The Big Chute Marine Railway (BCMR) is one site in the system that provides transportation for boats. The BCMR carriage is used to transport boats and their passengers on the inclined railway a distance of 230 m over a natural barrier from one body of water to another, with an elevation difference of 18 m. The unique feature of the haulage system used in this application is the variable angle of the incline from about 20 per cent rise changing to horizontal and followed by 20 per cent decline. In such conditions, unlike as in standard incline haulage, special configuration of hoists and drives is required. On the uphill part of the track, there is a need to have a motoring mode, on the downhill part a regenerating mode and on the horizontal part a combination of motoring and regeneration is required. The original system was built in 1978 and employed four 100 hp dc drive mine hoists to haul the 100 tonne conveyance loaded with 90 tonnes of boats. Due to failures and operational problems with the original system, in 1999 Parks Canada awarded a turnkey contract to ABB for a new, modern system of four single drum hoists. The new system was put into operation in 2000, only six months after receiving the order. The hoists are controlled by digital drives and a digital control system. Due to dramatic changes in the load conditions for individual hoists involved, the new system features many interesting solutions like changing drive modes from speed to torque control and a multiple, regulated braking system. It is a unique hoisting system, which could be also used in mining applications.

At September 2001 the beneficiation plant at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Mt Whaleback mine is set to treat 9.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of iron ore, 40 per cent better than original design. This paper describes the steps, decision-making processes and innovations used to increase capacity at minimum cost. The plant was designed in 1979 to operate at 1133 t/h for 6000 hours per annum, treating 6.8 Mtpa. Sufficient suitable contact ore was unavailable and feed was finer than planned. The plant was designed with minimum surge capacity between multiple process units. It had never reached design capacity. In 1993 a study by Fluor Daniel to treat increased tonnage resulted in modifications to improve plant operations. Efforts to expand production by increasing reliability did not achieve the desired capacity. NJ Morrow (Pty) Ltd (NJM) conducted a technical audit in 1996 with process evaluation by Mineral Processors. Replacement of operator interface and PLC logic in 1997 made plant operation and diagnosis easier. Involving operators in logic development enhanced their plant knowledge. Fluor Daniel Simulation developed a simulation model of the process. Mineral Processors and NJM reviewed the model findings, recommended metallurgical improvements and developed preliminary designs and costs. BHP Engineering produced a detailed design with a cost estimate of $A34 million. After analysis and revision of the design, a $A10.4 million upgrade to 8.5 Mtpa was carried out. Detailed modifications to the process units, particularly the HM drum plant, allowed significantly higher capacities and improved metallurgical performance. The target capacity was achieved in June 2001. Further modifications are progressing to treat lower-grade ores.

This paper examines some of the important aspects of mineral taxation policies and practices, with reference to the mining tax regimes of selected Pacific Rim countries (see Tables 1 and 2). The following subjects are addressed:what is æmineral taxationÆ?, basis for mineral taxation, types of mineral taxes, objectives of the mineral taxation regime, best practices, and mineral royalties. Many countries, in some cases with the encouragement and assistance of international funding agencies, are actively assessing the international competitiveness of their mining tax regimes with a view to attracting investment. However, these countries recognise that the mining tax regime is not the only consideration that is taken into account by prospective investors. The countryÆs geological prospectivity, physical infrastructure, labour force, political risk, and regulatory system are also important factors in the investment decision making process. Although it is probably true that an attractive mining tax regime will not necessarily attract mineral investment, there is a real possibility that an unattractive regime can drive away investment. For example, Hugo Dummett, general manager for discovery at BHP, hinted recently that BHP could cease exploration in Russia in the absence of positive tax changes. Dummett is reported as saying that if taxes æend up being as onerous as they are now, we really have to rethink why we are hereÆ (Mining Journal, London, November 27, 1998).

"A new approach to mineral project evaluation is described called Scenario-Based Project Evaluation (SBPE). SBPE incorporates well established æscenario planningÆ and æscenario thinkingÆ approaches, which are used extensively in other industries,?most notably the?petroleum industry. While most scenario planning is qualitative and non-probabilistic, the approach described here includes both quantitative and qualitative aspects. SBPE is complementary to optimisation approaches and allows mining firms to build and operate projects that are more robust in the face of adverse changes as well as proactively respond and exploit the upside offered by a realistic assessment of variability. The approach has potential to improve project performance and decrease operational risk. It also has important applications for currently operating mines.Conventional evaluation of metalliferous mineral deposits uses estimates of metal grades and deleterious attributes in singular æorebody modelsÆ, usually 3D block models, which fail to capture two critical aspects that underpin the realised value of mining projects: the inherent uncertainty of the estimated attributes the spatial variability of attributes, at the scale of mining selection, which impact on downstream processing steps and fundamentally drive realised value. While singular models are appropriate for estimating block averages, conditional simulation (CS) models of the relevant attributes are needed to represent uncertainty and capture spatial variability. Any attributes that can be either built into CS models and/or modelled in the envisaged mining/processing steps, can be evaluated fully through to highly ægranularÆ (ie detailed and un-smoothed) cash flows. A complete view of SBPE relies on selected strategies being tested against plausible æscenariosÆ of factors external to the project and thus outside management control. æExternalitiesÆ captured in such scenarios include market prices, costs and taxes. Via SBPE, project managers may demonstrate that there is material value in preserving or purchasing options that provide future flexibility to respond to the changing externalities or changes in orebody performance. Such flexibility generally comes at a cost but is very difficult to value. It is argued that full value chain evaluation using SBPE can help to value these options for a mining company. The Pic de Fon iron oxide deposit is a potential major new source of iron ore, located at the southern end of the Simandou range in eastern Guinea on the West African Craton. The deposit is hosted by banded iron formations (BIFs) within a supracrustal sequence, which lies unconformably upon a crystalline basement. The host BIFs and shales have been metamorphosed up to staurolite-grade itabirite and phyllite respectively. Stratigraphic relationships are obscured by polyphase deformation, although the sequence appears to comprise a lower phyllite(-minor quartzite) unit and transitional phyllite-iron formation overlain by three itabirite units. It is the itabirite units, selectively enriched to iron grades in excess of 65 per cent Fe (with low deleterious elements), that constitute the Pic de Fon deposit. Samples acquired from exploration diamond drill holes and outcrop across the deposit have been collected to investigate the Pic de Fon lithologies and iron-rich material types. Initial research techniques have included geological mapping, reflected light microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and ICP-AES geochemistry. The aim is to develop a model for deposit genesis that may assist future exploration and deposit exploitation planning. Results to date have identified a variety of hematite textures, which include recrystallised trellis, interlobate and granoblastic hematite after magnetite. In addition, fine-grained bladed to acicular microplaty hematite appears to both replace itabirite banding and infill porosity. Field relationships indicate a structural control of microplaty hematite development. Geochemistry and XRD results suggest a loss of silica with negligible iron addition during the conversion of itabirite to ore grade mineralisation. The enrichment process(es) is also accompanied by a gradual increase in K, Mg, Na, (Ca and Al).

Upon subduction, water is liberated from the sediments and the porous struc- ture of the oceanic crust and from de- hydration of minerals for redistribution and chemical reaction. A survey of pro- cesses which are likely to occur along the subducting plate reveals that water may well be basic in subduction induced gas generation, magma formation and ore deposition. In analogy to the industrial water gas process, reaction of water with car- bonaceous matter, in subducted sediments is likely to yield substantial volumes of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. While water and carbon dioxide appear to play a determining role in the development of differentiated magmas, hydrogen will react with metal sulfides and sulfur to form hydrogen sulfide which is essential in sulfide ore depo- sition. A survey of possible metal extrac- tion chemistry along subduction suggests a stepwise solubilization of metals from sediments and oceanic crust, and a poten tial accumulation of dissolved metals in zones of characteristic composition. The metal spectrum in ore deposits at near surface appears to reflect the com- position of the solution in the respec- tive subduction zone. A tendency for preferential solubi- lization of copper at subductidn level, from among the transition metals, an in- creasing generation of hydrogen sulfide in the sane direction and partition effects as well as sulfide precipitation characteristics lead to enrichment in copper and to its selective deposition in the direction towards the trench as observed in S. Latin America. A postscript deals with the formation of native copper.

The KSS Lead Plant (Kivcet - SNAMPROGETTI - SAMIM) of Por tovesme, owned by Nuova Samim (the sector-head Company for non ferrous metals and derivatives owned by ENI), has been operating since february 1987. This plant is based on the Soviet Kivcet licence and testwork carried out on the pilot plant of VNIITSVETMET in Ust Kameno gorsk fed by the Nuova Samim's concentrates. The plant is com pletely automatized using the most advanced technologies and it is operated by nineteen people on shift work, including all ancillary units and lead decopperizing-casting. The expected performance of the plant has been confirmed and improves day by day in relation of the operating experience, thanks to the new conceptual design of the furnace. Due to the remarkable flexi bility of the process, the integration of the lead plant with the other plants of the metallurgical complex of Portovesme rro-#4 (Electrolytic Zinc Plant, Sulphuric Acid Plant, Imperial Smel ting) has shown all the economic advantages. The lead content in the ambient air, detected by the monitors, either in the working area and on the ground outside the complex, is widely Pb W" below the stricter new limits recommanded by the E.E.C. (Economic European Community) rules and by the Italian law. The whole process is carried out in equipment completely closed and under suction and it does not require manual operations with exposure to the lead. The production cost is much lower than that performed by the traditional technology. This advantage permits wide margin to consider investment to replace the traditional technology.

The emerging discipline of ‘geometallurgy’ is not new but is becoming increasingly recognised as a discrete and high-value activity. Geometallurgy involves a quantified and spatially constrained approach to ore characterisation in terms of relationships to critical processing performance behaviours. A key outcome is enhanced economic optimisation of mining and improved risk management tools.Industry recognition of the need for large-scale, integrated research to support this emerging area resulted in commencement of a major ongoing initiative in mid-2005. The AMIRA International P843 ‘GeMIII’ project (Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling) is a cross-discipline collaboration involving a number of world-class research organisations supported by over 20 industry sponsors.The project is delivering integrated tools and methods which link intrinsic rock characteristics to prediction of mineral processing performance. These indices must be capable of spatial distribution in 3D resource models and incorporation into mine planning and optimisation. A key aspect is provision of new cost-effective tools and methods which can provide the large numbers of measured and estimated data points required to undertake effective modelling and spatial distribution. The integrated methodology and enabling technologies being developed through the ongoing AMIRA GeMIII project are outlined, together with implications for supporting industry best practice.

Three-dimensional granular flow models have been run to simulate three types of sample cutters: a cross-stream cutter, a vezin, and a cross-belt cutter. This type of modelling involves solving the equations of motion for large numbers of individual particles as they travel along a conveyor belt and interact with a sample cutter. It allows flows of bulk materials to be visualised and understood. Here we have used spherical particles. These results illustrate some advantages that modelling has compared to physical bias testing: By taking reference samples which are very close to the actual samples, the estimation of bias can be achieve quite precisely with very few runs. (Many Standards about bias testing recommend a minimum of 20 runs, but we have found that five runs generally provide adequate precision.) Potential bias can be divided into two components: the particles which are missed but should have been sampled and the particles which are extra but which should not have been sampled. This more detailed information can provide useful insight. Exactly the same material can be sampled using different sample cutters, thereby avoiding a source of variation that complicates physical testing. Much more detailed visualisation is possible, allowing better understanding of the bulk material flow in various circumstances.

Geological domains describe the mineralisation state and stratigraphic location of different geological regions of mines. They play a very important role at the geological modelling stage as weight percentage of chemical elements information within each geological domain is assumed to be correlated while information coming from different geological domains is considered uncorrelated. Having correct domain assignments to both the chemical assays and the 3D space of modelling is critical for building a reliable geological model of the mine.As standard practice significant effort is invested into the interpretation of the deposit and identification of the geological domains for the chemical assays and the 3D geological space. Despite these efforts, there are some chemical assays with ambiguous geological domain where the exploration assay domain and the block domain do not match. Incorrectly including a sample in the wrong domain can cause a large change in the predicted weight percentage of chemical elements estimation for that block. Therefore, the major challenge of grouping the spatially correlating weight percentage of chemical elements is how to determine which of these domains best fits these misclassified samples.This work proposes machine learning based autonomous technique for identifying to which geological domain (the exploration assay domain or the block domain) the misclassified sample belongs. The proposed methodology is based on Gaussian Process (GP) classification. The GP machine learning approach consists of training and inference stages. At the training stage the GP automatically learns the properties of different geological domains using the chemical assays with unambiguous domain assignment. Then, at the inference stage the GP makes predictions for the geological domains of the assays with ambiguous initial domain assignment.We tested the proposed technique by conducting a case study for an iron ore deposit located in Western Australia. The results demonstrate that the application of the proposed GP technique removes statistically significant deviations in the assay values in many regions: mineralised ore region, unmineralised region, highly weathered region and intrusive material that is highly variable. In this case study the proposed methodology autonomously identified the geological domains for more than 50 per cent of samples which are initially ambiguously classified. The Golden Cross mine was an open-pit and underground gold and silver operation from December 1991 to April 1998. Closure of the mine has been based on an approach agreed among stakeholders. The initial phase was the release of a closure plan which was regarded as the blueprint for the following phases and the closure works required to implement the plan. The second phase involved lodgment of consent applications and their granting for the final water management configuration. The final phase is monitoring, confirmation that the site is performing as required by the closure plan and consents and settlement of final ownership, management and surety arrangements. Industry best practice modelling techniques have been used to finalise closure design and have been shown to be good predictors of site water management and discharge performance. Site discharges are in compliance with toxicology based water quality criteria for the protection of aquatic life and most discharges from the site, including those from the closed cyanide-tailings facility, can now be discharged without further active intervention or treatment.

Information obtained from a reconciliation system provides fundamental indicators to an operations performance and is often neglected as a key performance indicator when developing a business plan or mining schedule. The cycle of exploration, ore definition, mining and processing within a company is constantly scrutinised both internally and externally as to the safety, environmental and financial performance of these activities with the operators judged on their performance on a periodic basis. However, it is not unusual for the reconciliation process to be given scant attention until a serious issue (usually a shortfall) occurs, at which point short-term solutions may be implemented which only serve to compound the original problem. A robust reconciliation system takes time to develop and implement initially and must continue to evolve with time. The best systems are those where all the stakeholders in the ultimate outcome are involved in the design and accept responsibility for the validity of their component inputs. Output from the reconciliation process can be utilised to fine-tune all aspects of an operation once the underlying issues leading to a particular result are understood.

I wish that in addition to being a Pro- fessional Engineer I was also a communications expert. My principal task this morning, and yours after this meeting, is to convince a wide variety of individuals that steel industry slags are a high quality material that can be used for many purposes; and that their use can significantly alleviate some of the problems facing engineers, public officials, and the general public in our countries. By actual in- place performance over a long period of time steel industry blast furnace slags have proven that they are as good as the best natural aggregates, and better than some, for any type of construction or purpose for which natural aggregates are used. Steel furnace slags have many unique favorable characteristics and prop- erties when compared to other types of aggre- gate even though they cannot be used for all types of construction. We have the facts, all we have to do is present them to the right people in the proper manner.
