The sulfur distribution ratio (Ls) is an expression of the amount of sulfur in slag to the amount of sulfur in molten metal. The sulfide capacities calculated from Reddy-Blander (RB) model were used to calculate the sulfur distribution ratio (Ls). A new Reddy model for sulfur distribution ratio (Ls) was developed for modelling Ls for ironmaking, steelmaking, and secondary steelmaking conditions. Besides calcium oxide, the major component in the ladle furnace (LF) slags is alumina. The Ls was calculated for typical LF slags as a function of temperature and composition. The model calculated Ls values are in good agreement with the experimental and industrial slags data. The extremely low oxygen potential in these furnaces after fully-killed steel is favourable for desulfurisation. For any given slag’s composition and temperature, its sulfide capacity can be calculated a priori. The equilibrium sulfur distribution ratio between this slag and liquid metal in a particular vessel can also be calculated a priori. The Ls for ladle furnace (LF) slags is about twice those for blast furnaces (BF) slags and ten times those of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slags. The desulfurisation of pig iron in BF and desulfurisation of steel in LF during secondary steelmaking are recommended. Steel desulfurisation in steelmaking furnaces is not effective. Since the model used to calculate the sulfur distribution ratio (Ls) is a priori, it is a useful tool for the iron and steel makers in improving the product quality and optimisation of the industrial furnace operations.

This paper summarises the findings of 27 model-scale bench blasts in magnetic mortar, which were conducted from 2011 to 2014 at the blasting site of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben.The aim of the study was the investigation of the influence of blasthole delay times in small-scale bench blasts on the face characteristics and cracking damage created in the surrounding rock, which affects the fragmentation in subsequent rows.The test specimens or blocks, which were produced out of magnetite concrete, were roughly 1:100 in scale to normal bench blasts. The confinement of the testing blocks at the sides and back ensured the similarity to normal bench blasts with regard to the wave transmission into the surrounding rock. The specimen contained three or four rows with five blastholes each and were shot row by row, with virgin (undamaged) material in row 1 and increasingly damaged or preconditioned material in the following rows.The tested delay times varied between 0, 28, 73 and 140 µs, which corresponds to 0, 0.4, 1.0 and 2.0 ms/m of burden.The evaluation of the material properties showed that the use of magnetite concrete eliminated the inhomogeneous behaviour of rock, but some unexpected differences of the individual production cycles were still detected.The characteristics of the bench after each blast was evaluated along three horizontal lines out of a 3D model of the bench face. The tested delay time sequences of the virgin (first row) and single preconditioned blasts (second row) produced more overbreak for longer delays, while the third-row shots resulted in a smoothened surface independent of the chosen delay.The introduced damage after every blast was evaluated by an observation of irregularities on the newly blasted bench face. The visible cracks at the top of the testing blocks were documented and divided into several crack families according to their angle, length and origin. The remaining block was broken out of the blasting site after blasting, cut into several horizontal and vertical slices and dye penetrant spray was used to visualise the cracks created. Some of the detected crack families showed an influence of the delay time. The calculated mean crack density and mean crack intersection density showed that longer delays resulted in a higher degree of damage.The fragmentation results were well reproduced by the basic three-parameter Swebrec function. The observed improvement of fragmentation in the second- and third-row blasts was linked to the preconditioning of the burden for the following row while blasting the actual row. With the exception of the simultaneously initiated blastholes, the blasts showed coarser fragmentation for the shortest delays, while the longest delays generated the finest fragmentation.CITATION:Schimek, P, Ouchterlony, F and Moser, P, 2015. Surface displacements are routinely monitored at multiple points during slope excavation. The monitoring data reveals the safety status of the slope under current loading conditions. They can be used to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope by reducing the uncertainties of the prediction model and its model parameters. In a multistage excavation, the observed displacements in the current stage can be used to update the prediction of the displacements in subsequent stages. Besides, due to the spatial correlation of the slope parameters, the prediction of the displacement at one location can also be updated using the monitored displacements at adjacent locations. This study aims to develop a multistep updating method to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope using time-series monitoring data at multiple points. This method integrates the theoretical computational model with observational evidence. It considers the inherent uncertainty of the slope, model uncertainty and measurement uncertainty. With more monitoring information being incorporated, the prediction becomes closer to the actual performance of the slope. Gosowong is situated within the Neogene magmatic arc of Halmahera island in the Maluku province of eastern Indonesia. It was discovered as the result of a rigorous ground reconnaissance program in an area with no previous mining activity. The broad structural setting in the Gosowong District comprises an elongate dome formed by the forceful upward intrusion of magma along a deep-seated structure, resulting in associated tensional fracturing trending parallel to the long axis of the dome. Four copper-gold porphyries and numerous low-grade epithermal veins occur within this mineralised corridor, with the Gosowong Deposit being the only economic occurrence discovered to-date. Gold mineralisation is hosted within multiphase epithermal quartz-adularia and quartz-chlorite fissure veins, breccias, and stockworks. High-grade gold mineralisation is emplaced in two gently south-plunging ore shoots along a 400 m section of the north-striking, east-dipping, Gosowong Fault, the primary control on mineralisation. The Gosowong Fault is believed to be a tensional fracture associated with uplift of the dome. Lithological variation and structural intersections play a large role in grade distribution within the vein zone. Host rocks comprise a wide range of shallow marine, intermediate-basic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of ?late Miocene age. The Gosowong gold deposit is a classic example of a low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposit, based on the abundance of adularia and illite in the alteration assemblage, and low base-metal sulphide content within quartz-adularia veins. The indicated resource is estimated at 0.99 Mt at 27 g/t Au and 38 g/t Ag for a total of 870 000 ounces Au, using a cut-off grade of 2 g/t Au.

CSIRO Minerals has recently developed an electron microprobe (EMP) based imaging (or mapping) method for characterising ilmenite concentrates. The method requires an electron microprobe analyser to collect elemental X-ray maps which are then processed via an in-house developed software module (CHIMAGE). The type of information readily available from EMP mapping includes; primary phase identification, modal analysis of phases, chemical analysis of individual phases, textural information (eg the alteration stages in the formation of leucoxene or pseudorutile from primary ilmenite and the development of macro-porosity), and the identification of coatings or pore-fill material. All of these parameters will impact on the choice of future downstream processing options considered for any particular ilmenite concentrate. The method has been demonstrated to be a sensitive analytical tool for assessing the distribution of aluminosilicate minor impurities in ilmenite feedstocks from the West Coast of Australia and also for characterising the complex chrome-spinel gangue phases common in East Coast ilmenite concentrates from the Murray Basin.

The concept of vertical pit mining has been developed as an alternative mining method for the exploitation from surface of small, vertical or near-vertical, massive orebodies down to depths of some 200 m, where ore extraction from conventional open pit excavations is rendered uneconomic due to high associated waste:ore mining ratio. Systematic lateral support maintains vertical pit sides, thereby minimising waste mining volumes. Stability analysis techniques have been developed for design of this lateral support, with the support quantum, primarily comprising long cable anchors, dependent upon country rock strength characteristics and pit configuration. Where the cost of support is less than the cost of the comparable conventional pit waste excavation, vertical pit mining becomes an economically viable alternative, additionally providing the benefit of reduced environmental impact and rehabilitation requirements for the mining area. The technique has been successfully applied for the mining of a chrome deposit in Zimbabwe to an 80 m depth, believed to be unique in the world, and a full feasibilty study for a 3000 m2 diamond pipe has been carried out for mining to 200 m depth.

Impact-induced rock fragmentation is a mechanism that is commonly used for rock breakage in drilling and crushing. Additionally, rock fragmentation by blasting is frequently used in rock excavation operations. Experience shows that the presence of discontinuities can significantly influence the impact-induced damage and fragmentation of rock. Quantification of the response of jointed rock masses to impact loads is complicated by the fact that the available laboratory tests are mainly designed for aggregates or intact rocks. It can be argued that neither of these tests adequately represent a jointed rock mass. This paper presents the results of a series of numerical simulations used to investigate the influence of pre-existing discontinuities on the impact-induced fragmentation of rock masses. The methodology includes determination of the static and dynamic mechanical properties of a rock unit by conducting a series of laboratory tests on intact rock samples collected from a quarry in Canada. A 2D distinct element code, Particle Flow Code, was used to generate a bonded particle model in order to simulate both static mechanical properties (uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio and indirect tensile strength) and dynamic mechanical property (drop weight tensile strength) of the intact rock. The calibrated numerical model was then used to construct large-scale synthetic rock mass samples by incorporating discontinuity networks of different intensity into the bonded particle model. Finally, the impact-induced fragmentation inflicted by a rigid projectile particle on the jointed rock mass samples, simulated by a synthetic rock mass model, was determined. Increases in mining and production capacities can have a major impact on the productivity of a mining and production facility during the construction and commissioning period. With minimised production loss in mind, a multi-phase modular plant design was implemented on the Khumani Mine in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The first phase involved a run-of-mine (ROM) crushing facility and the subsequent modular processing facility with capacity for 8.4 million tons per annum (Mt/a) product. An interim phase comprising modular additions to the processing facility increased capacity to 10 Mt/a product, with tie-ins occurring during maintenance periods. The second phase involves a second ROM crushing facility and modular additions to the processing facility, increasing capacity to 16 Mt/a product. This paper outlines the design considerations and limitations with modular design that need to be considered and shows how effectively construction and commissioning were implemented within shut-down and maintenance periods.

Sasol Roche Blasting Services (SRBS) and its former owners have been in the process of developing and utilising low-density explosives over the last ten years. Many blasts have been fired in varying strata types in a number of mining operations. This has led to a good understanding of the product and the best methods to exploit its characteristics when designing blasts. Unlike some other low-density products, SoftLOAD« is a homogeneous mix that is easily handled and able to be loaded at high load rates. This paper discusses the physics of SoftLOAD« low-density explosives and how through correct utilisation, blasting outcomes can be significantly improved. It also touches on the various side benefits that can provide the blast designer with a more controlled blast.

Improvements in mechanisation should not be considered independently of safety and of environmental hazards. The need to keep gas contents within statutory limits may make the time needed to partially drain a gassy seam the effective control on face development times. Dust levels may provide an effective control on coal extraction rates on any one face. The combination of gas and dust on high output longwall faces may make it necessary for each one to be treated as a separate mine in terms of ventilation, and the faceworkers may need special protection. Mechanisation and safety can be mutually beneficial when mechanisation combined with systematic safety assessment reduces accidents, and when a thorough study of how to reduce accidents and health risks indicates the best method to improve mechanisation.

Dragline performance drops considerably when chop-down and double handling of material is needed due to increasing overburden thick- ness or total pit depth. Beyond a certain pit depth the dragline needs support by a pre- stripping system in the upper portion of the overburden. In soft to medium hard ground the bucket wheel excavator can be used for pre- stripping, whereby several methods of material transport are investigated. Conveyor transport around the pit and dumping by stackers is the best solution from the technical point of view. Cross pit transport and dumping by means of a conveying bridge is the method with the lowest costs per volume moved. Cross pit transport by use of a beltwagon with overlong discharge boom is both, poor from the technical point of view and high in overall costs.

Working Capital requirements for resource projects are to a large extent, dependent on specific characteristics of the projects concerned. Important variables are the nature of the project and speed with which sales can be realised. The project's location is also important as this will influence inventory levels. Working capital requirements have a time profile, the present value of which can represent a significant portion of a projects overall capital needs. A significant component of a project's working capital is not readily recoverable or able to be reassigned should the project fail or be deferred.

This paper describes a Client Consultant Relationship and shows how an engineering team created an environ- ment which fosters the development of good, economical and sometimes unique solutions. A major factor in establish- ing this environment was the Client's instruction to the Consultant to "propose solutions which, in the Consultant's considered opinion, best satisfy the needs of the project - not necessarily solutions which reproduce methods adopted elsewhere in the past." The Consultant's experience in other projects and disciplines outside mining has contributed by providing a cross- fertilisation of ideas. The team approach also allows the Client's expertise to be applied positively throughout the design process. These factors and the Client's foresight in providing adequate time for planning, allow the Client-Consultant Team to apply sound fundamental engineering in developing effective solutions.

Finite element analysis is becoming a routine component of design of longwall extractions, now superseding more traditional somewhat intuitive approaches. Finite element modelling is relatively inexpensive and provides an adequate degree of similitude to give satisfactory analysis. The physical modelling of two decades ago is now largely replaced by numerical methods of which finite element is the best known. Important data for finite element work are physical properties, including creep aspects, introducing the non-linearity of stress response.Various computer packages are available and some were used to model two specific UK examples, using both linear and non-linear approaches. It appears that non-linear approaches will yield most benefit. The use of materially non-linear analysis is merited by the greater similitude it provides between model output and real mine situations.

It is not often that mines have as much warning of the approach of bad ground conditions as was the case at the Western Mining Corporation, Kambalda Nickel Operations Lafranchi/Schmitz Decline. Most aspects of this operation are in fact quite unique and like the best solutions, the answer to the problem of weak and foliated ground conditions was relatively simple; requiring the use of readily available explosives although the idea of using it in this manner may not be the most obvious.The use of high shock energy POWERGEL 2131 cartridges proved to be the correct answer, in conjunction with small changes in drill pattern design. The resulting lack of overbreak bears testimony to the success of the concept and the commitment of the miners to achieving a safe working environment.

The aim of this paper is to discuss how to form work and organisations in the mines of the future. The Kiruna underground iron ore mine in the far north of Sweden is used as an example on how technical development affects organisational issues like skills, work identity and gender. Over a period of 50 years one can see a transformation of work from manual underground work to automation and remote control from surface level. What characterised the old underground workface was the close relation between man and the hard rock and with arduous physical work under dangerous conditions. Today, the face miners are located on the seventh level of an office building close to the mine. There is also an emerging, and in many aspects already evident, knowledge transformation û from the old and obsolete physical and tacit knowledge and skills (for example the ability to æread the rockÆ) to something new, which can be described as abstract æhigh-techÆ knowledge and skills. The modern technology has created a new type of work û new in terms of competencies and knowledge as well as workload and organisation. At the same time the mining company are recruiting more women and promoting the former pure male work as attractive workplaces for both women and men. All this has effects on how individuals and company create and recreate skills, identity and gender. To some extent the technological development predestines these changes, but there are some choices to be done when forming good work and organisations for the mines of the future. The traditional mining workplace culture and behaviours and the old type of masculinity, the æmachoÆ style, will be challenged by the new æhigh-techÆ work and new competency demands. The changes risk meeting restoring responses, which can have negative impact on the performance of the organisation, for example making it inflexible and perhaps ælaggingÆ behind the technological development. These questions need to be handled when planning future mining.

Maximising ore tonnage at a selected target grade requires that appropriate ore identification criteria be established. Iron ore mining block models may consist of many millions of estimated blocks, each block corresponding to the selective mining unit (SMU), with grade interpolated from drill hole data. Each block can be considered as a potential ore candidate. Analysis of such a huge database can require large computational resources, especially for sensitivity analysis requiring multiple computations. However, an alternative streamlined approach is possible, where the data are compressed to an appropriately smaller and representative subset. The consequent data reduction not only makes it feasible to consider the simultaneous analysis of multiple pits but also considerably speeds up computation, enabling sensitivity analysis of the potential ore tonnage as a function of the required grade. Ore identification criteria can be successfully established using appropriately chosen reduced data comprising less than one per cent of the blocks. The ore identified is virtually indistinguishable in tonnage and grade from the ore that would be selected using the entire block model.Two methods of data reduction are tested: sampling (using a proportion of unaltered blocks) and binning (consolidating groups of blocks to a single average grade). The source blocks are first sorted (such as by location, analyte grade, principal component score, random order or value) before sampling or binning. In this study, the sorting options considered were by location and Fe grade. The effectiveness of each method was evaluated using the block model subsets to select the maximum tonnage of ore at a specified target grade. Block model data from an anonymous Pilbara iron ore project with about one million blocks averaging 1.132 kt were used. The blocks are from multiple resource models, to be blended to a single product. Sampling is shown to be superior to binning because sampling preserves the full variability while binning, although matching the mean block grades reduces their variability.It was found that the appropriately sampled data sets (sorted by location) gave results virtually identical to the results for the full data set, even when the samples comprised less than one per cent of the original blocks. The reduction in computer time to identify maximum tonnage at a specified grade was approximately proportional to the sample percentage. The increase in computation speed greatly facilitated sensitivity analysis. A sampled data set of one-eighth the total block model was used to investigate the effects of changing each of the component grades around the original grade specification. The results of this sensitivity analysis are discussed, and illustrate the potential benefit of carrying out sensitivity analysis in determining feasible and marketable product grades.CITATION:Everett, J E, 2015. Classification devices provide a link between comminution and flotation. Basically, it determines which particles are diverted back for additional grinding and which ones pass to downstream flotation. Therefore, the classifiers play an important role in the performance of a mineral processing circuit. Hydrocyclones are the most common classifiers used in wet grinding, despite being associated with poor classification efficiency. Hydrocyclones are widely used due to advantages related to low maintenance as well as reduced capital and operating cost. Other classifiers, such as fine screens, have much better classification efficiency compared to hydrocyclones. The major challenge of using screens in an operation, however, is their large footprint and increased maintenance requirements relative to hydrocyclones. Some researchers have demonstrated that switching from hydrocyclones to screens, as the classifier device in a ball milling circuit, resulted in a 20 per cent increase in plant throughput and significant improvements in coarse particle recovery, resulting in a 6 per cent increase in overall flotation recovery. However, it is known that these benefits of improved classification are very much ore specific, ie depending on the ore response. Therefore, there is a need to estimate the benefits of improved classification in pilot scale testing before the plant could consider the potential classifier upgrade. This paper presents the results of two pilot-scale grinding tests where the ore sample was processed using different classifiers: a traditional hydrocyclone and hybrid classification involving the use of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone followed by a screen. The size specific energy and circulating load were used to compare the performance of the grinding circuit. The grinding product was subject to mineral liberation analysis and the impact of classification efficiency on the mineral liberation is discussed in the paper.

Multiphase slags form the basis of the reduction pathway for manganese ferroalloy production. The present work aims to understand the flow of slag through the coke bed based on experimentation in controlled conditions. Synthetic slags of different basicities were evaluated for their phase composition, viscosity, and flow. The two-phase slag will have two zones: a liquid slag zone and a multiphase zone. The multiphase zone will consist mostly of a solid phase with some liquid slag between the solid particles. The multiphase part will hence have a high viscosity. The liquid zone will flow into the coke bed while the multiphase area will stay. With increasing reduction, the multiphase area will decrease in size until the solid phase is gone and the whole slag will flow into the coke bed. The effective viscosity of slag will decrease with the lowering of the solid oxide phase. The results from flow experiments confirmed that the segregation of phases occurs when slag flows through the coke bed. It is observed that the flow is dependent both on the size of the void and the viscosity of slag.

Anglo American’s Los Bronces copper mine in Chile has been conducting detailed assessments investigating value adding options for their asset. The mine has conducted several detailed Mine-to- Mill and Grade Engineering studies to investigate increased throughput and head grade and to quantifying the impact of these approaches across the life of mine. CRC ORE has two key technologies namely Grade Engineering and the Integrated Extraction Simulator. These two technology suites have been combined to understand the technological landscape and associated value drivers suitable for application at Los Bronces. Detailed ore characterisation test work was conducted to:  measure and spatially model the propensity of ores to naturally deport and  develop customised blast models for Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering evaluation The outputs of this work were utilised to develop a block model populated with a range on new Grade Engineering and blasting parameters suitable for scenario analysis. To facilitate scenario analysis a high-fidelity value chain model of the Los Bronces operation from blasting to concentrate production was built in IES. IES was combined with sophisticated analytical tools such as Neural Networks to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model made it possible to simulate in IES all available blocks in the block model to predict throughput and grade changes for different strategic scenarios. The scenario analysis was run across 24 strategic combinations of Mine-to-Mill and Grade Engineering and comprised several million simulations. The scenarios investigated each technology independently and jointly to provide an attributed block model that can feed forward into technoeconomic modelling to determine optimal execution strategies for the mine. This paper presents the first published study combining Grade Engineering and IES to provide mass simulation capability to investigate strategic options for a mining asset.
