Since gold was first discovered, mining development in the West Australian goldfields has been heavily dependent on the location of groundwater both for potable and mineral processing supplies . The location of adequate and economic sources of water has been a constant challenge to both explorers and developers throughout the history of the goldfields. The provision of a piped supply from Mundaring in 1903 greatly alleviated pressure on scarce resources, lowered mining costs and permitted the orderly development of infrastructure. However, increases in the demand for water resulting from new mineral discoveries over the past three decades has led to renewed pressures for more local supplies to be established. Wide-ranging groundwater exploration took place in the late 1960's and early 1970's, also, more recently, in support of intensified gold exploration. The collation and interpretation of the hydrogeological data from the whole goldfields region indicates that despite a low mean annual rainfall of between 180 and 350 mm, quite marked differences exist between the rates of groundwater recharge in different parts of the area, In general, these can be shown to diminish in a southerly direction contrary to a trend towards increases in annual rainfall. Recharge rates are related mainly to differences in rock weathering pattern, geological structure and physiography. The same differences have controlled the pattern of groundwater salinity and the magnitude of groundwater storages associated with the palaeodrainages. In the vicinity of the northern and western watersheds with the Gascoyne, the superficial sediments tend to be thin, may have calcrete in the section and contain moderate storages of brackish or even fresh water. This contrasts with the lower regions of the palaeodrainages where calcrete is absent and deeper erosion has permitted the accumulation of relatively large thicknesses of fine-grained sediments which are saturated with hypersaline water and constitute substantial storages. Account must be taken of these characteristics if water supply sources are to be optimised to meet the growing demands for groundwater in the region.

One of the earliest and continuing challenges in driving sustainable development in large scale resource industry projects is around the issue of assessment û how do you measure the sustainability of a mineral operation? One of the key road blocks when confronted with this challenge is the temptation of technical folks to reach for a definition of sustainability or sustainable development. But definitions, by definition, have boundaries and limitations that serve to constrain thinking û they limit the thinking of what we can achieve with sustainability (it also acts as a barrier that constrains innovation). Rather than seeking definitions, better understanding of the core perspectives around sustainability and their application to the minerals industry provides a much more powerful platform from which to conduct assessments. But it is only when these perspectives are combined with the right framework and supporting techniques that the complex becomes doable. With the support of the perspectives and the framework, various assessment and measurement methodologies can be used; the challenge is communicating to stakeholders the sustainability character of the project in ways that are meaningful and to which people can connect. Assessment is not about finding the best or most accurate methods that fulfil strictly academic and possibly abstract requirements. The challenge is to help people understand what the impacts are, and what the value contributions will be, in a format and language that make sense in their world-view.

"There have always been development projects that fall short of expectations. In the last decade, we have seen more than the usual number of mining and oil/gas development projects taking significantly longer to develop and costing materially more than expected. The recent resource-equity market slump proves that investors are now far more cautious about investing new capital in the mineral and petroleum resources sector.What have we learned since 2005? Why have projects missed their targets? Why do investors often feel misled?Valuation of a project and the estimation of value is a more complex process than the evaluation of the merits of project development. The merit of project development can be clear from a prefeasibility evaluation, but this is no reason to skip the rigour of a feasibility study. The valuation of any project that is developed with any added risk should be discounted for this added risk.The development of a project impacts on other stakeholders, and the indirect cost of these impacts can have material implications for the cost structure, time and ultimate valuation of the project for its financial backers. The development of new projects (and thereby supply) can also have an impact on commodity prices, and therefore an impact on returns for financial backers.This paper will provide commentary on the author’s experiences and observations as a project developer and operator for 25 years, before becoming a project financier a decade ago.CITATION:Rozman, L I, 2016. Screening is an important and often costly process in the size classification of industrial minerals and for this reason alone it is essential for both managers and operators to fully understand what type of screening equipment is best suited for a particular application and why. The advent of elastic materials such as rubber and polyurethane have added a new dimension to the process of screening. It is important to understand why the physical properties of these materials can be of benefit in the screening process, and recognise which type of screening applications best take advantage of these orooerties.

A voracious consumer of energy and grinding media, the modern ball milling circuit has a huge direct cost impact on a mineral processing operation. Through optimisation, grinding also has the potential to unlock great improvements in recovery and throughput, but how can the complex interactions between mills, classifiers, tonnage, ore-type and downstream recovery be measured, understood and managed in a systematic manner?Functional performance analysis provides the tools and insights needed to measure, understand and improve the two key process efficiencies in ball milling circuits: classification system efficiency (CSE) and mill grinding efficiency.CSE measures the composite performance of the classification system as a whole. In short, the purpose of the classification system is to ensure that grinding mill energy is used to grind coarse particles while minimising overgrinding. CSE is simple to measure in the plant and it provides immediate feedback to the plant metallurgist, mill superintendent and management about the performance of the classification system and the amount of wasted energy in the grinding plant.Mill grinding efficiency measures the capacity of the grinding mill to convert feed-sized material into product-sized material on a tonnes per kilowatt hour basis. It is normalised based upon the ore resistance to breakage, so it provides feedback about the ‘health’ of the milling process under varying operating conditions and ore types. Mill grinding efficiency is measured at the same time as CSE through circuit sampling.Functional performance analysis combines CSE and mill grinding efficiency to provide a measureable, manageable optimisation objective. It also provides a link to tonnage, ore type and recovery. Mining exploration and development projects in Australia are being negatively affected by the highly complex regulatory and bureaucratic processes at all levels of government. These processes affect mining companies operating in Australia by impacting on timelines and the cost of developing a mining project. It is not uncommon for the granting of project approvals to take in excess of five years, meaning that mining companies struggle with productivity, efficiency, time frame and cost issues in respect to their projects in Australia. As the mining boom in Australia is moving from the investment to the production phase, it is now more important than ever to maintain a regulatory landscape that facilitates rather than discourages new investment.While one of our key arguments is that there is too much burdensome regulation and red tape in Australia, we are also strongly believe that regulatory intervention is necessary to ensure that appropriate checks and balances are in place to serve the public interest and manage environmental, health and safety, social and other development-related impacts that may arise from a mining project. However, the regulatory intervention in Australia has come to a point where it is excessive and starting to discourage valuable investment in mining projects for nominal return to the public. Excessive regulation or ‘red tape’ impedes productivity and competitiveness, deters investment and innovation and costs jobs, all of which ultimately impact on the growth of Australia and the standard of living of all Australians.This paper aims to examine and compare the federal, state and local regulations that govern mining projects in Australia. It will highlight how these regulations are unnecessarily complex, lengthy and duplicated and how they can be streamlined to reduce red tape. The value of Australia's education services exports increased to over $15 billion dollars in 2009, placing education as the third overall export earner behind coal and iron ore; however there are concerns over the impact of emerging policies on the future of both the industry and the provision of mining education. Policies have impacts on the growing number of international rankings (or league tables) of mining jurisdictions and universities. A high position in such rankings might be used as a measure of perceived quality with benefit to those at the top and to the detriment to those lower down.    Top performing companies in the relatively new domain of sustainability have been shown to achieve better financial performance than their industry competitors, assisting them in attracting top quality committed staff, hence positioning themselves well for the future. The world's mining companies, jurisdictions and universities are now ranked with results in the public domain. It is argued as to the validity of the data or perceptions used in such rankings, but there is no doubt they are influential in determining the flow of dollars around the globe. By investing your pension fund assets in the shares of the top performing companies, by placing your exploration dollars in a country at the top of such a list of attractive jurisdictions, attending or recruiting from a University at the top of the rankings - risk must surely be reduced?   While savings and risk reduction can undoubtedly result from the introduction of new technologies developed through appropriate R&D (the other core activity of a university), the maintenance of a very high level of exploration and production performance through dedicated highly skilled staff every hour of every day quietly improves financial performance, while avoiding safety, environmental and/or community incidents (ie protects the 'triple bottom line'). As always risk reduction comes down to enabling quality people to do a quality job - through the actions of such people we can sustain the global mining industry and secure our social license to operate. However, there is global concern over where the numbers of such people, including those with the recently required skills in sustainability, are going to come from.   This presentation will discuss some of the complexity and interactions involved in the development of such rankings, the dangers inherent in their simple acceptance and use, plus indicate some of the directions mining educators might take to sustain and increase the supply of quality graduates to the global mining industry. Ever increasing depth of mineral extraction presents a challenging environment for hard rock underground mines. High in situ stresses and associated seismicity with potential rock burst hazards are the major decisive factors contributing to the choice of a ground support regime. Conventional ground support systems, designed primarily for static loads, are not always capable of providing safe working conditions for underground personnel in seismically active mines. Systems specifically developed to resist dynamic loading and allowing for larger deformations are therefore preferred alternatives. High-tensile chain-link mesh has a proven record of successful use in open cut operations in various rockfall barrier installations due to its high energy absorption capacity. It has also been used in underground operations in various parts of the world. Its application in Australian underground mining, however, is limited due to the high labour intensity. This paper describes a method of mechanised installation of a chain-link mesh as trialled at Golden Grove, a base metals underground mine in Western Australia. A purpose-built mechanised roll mesh handler, developed in Australia, was used in this trial. The handler is compatible with all standard multi-boom underground drill rigs and is operated utilising the hydraulic circuit normally used for the feed arrangement.A number of operational benefits have been identified during the trial, the main two being:•improved safety of underground personnel due to the reduced amount of manual handling, and•increased productivity due to the decreased cycle time (the trial suggests a 40 - 50 per cent reduction in time over the weld mesh installation method).Although the energy-absorbing mesh combined with yielding rock bolts is a ground support system of choice for rock burst prone conditions, the operational upsides recognised during the trial imply that this product can also be competitively used in less demanding ground conditions where customarily weld mesh or shotcrete are used as a primary surface support.

The Project Specification and Technical Requirements documents associated with several recent large road tunnel projects within Australia have specified the application of AS/IEC 61508 – FunctionalSafety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety Related Systems at very high performance levels for the various control and fire life safety systems associated with such facilities.This paper seeks to explore the implications of referencing this standard within the road tunnel services context in terms of practicality, complexity and cost, whilst providing some examples of how a high safety integrity level (SIL) level can theoretically be achieved given current hardware availability.

The Tropicana deposit was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly. Discovered in a remote, barely-explored area of Western Australia not previously thought prospective for gold, Tropicana is the most significant gold find in Australia for more than a decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce an annual production of around 330 000 to 400 000 oz over a ten year mine life mining around 60 Mt/a.Process plant construction started in early 2012 and is due to finish in the December 2013 quarter. The mining contract was awarded to Macmahon Holdings (Macmahon) and mining commenced in July 2012 using conventional drill and blast, truck and excavator open cut methods.As a construction and start-up project in a greenfields location, the establishment of mining activities at Tropicana Gold Mine (TGM) involves the implementation of technical and operational systems, including the mining contract. Some of these systems and likely challenges were identified during earlier studies, while others were not foreseen until they were encountered. Alternatively, the time frames around implementation change depending on the changing knowledge of the project and industry environment. These systems include those common to the industry and those specific to the operation and location.This paper examines the implementation and development of a number of the systems specific to the establishment of mining operations, including the history, process and some outcomes. Although expected to be discrete systems to implement, they become interdependent. The base of separation at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore plant (Sirjan in the south of Iran) is magnetic separation after milling. Magnetic separation in the plant is divided into two parts: dry magnetic separation and wet magnetic separation. Sixty-five per cent of the plant production belongs to the dry magnetic separator section. Therefore, investigation of this part of the plant is necessary. Prediction of plant production is one of the most important subjects in mineral processing plants. That means, before feed enters the plant, specification of production has been calculated with laboratory methods. The purpose of this paper is the prediction concentrate quality has achieved from the dry magnetic separator. The content of iron in the final dry concentrate will be predicted, with laboratory, pilot and modelling methods, before feed enters the plant. Different variables are used in this approach, which consist of: speed of the first dry magnetic separator (rougher), speed of the third dry magnetic separator (cleaner), iron content in plant feed, size of 80 per cent passing of feed, size of 20 per cent passing of feed and iron content in pilot dry magnetic separation concentrate that performs in a standard manner. The artificial neural network is used for modelling and one of its branches is the radial basis network (RBN). Iron content in magnetic separating concentrate in plant will be introduced as the target and will be calculated with the RBN method. In the RBN method, a set of data enters to neural network and they will be trained and simulated. Finally, the target will be predicted. Ultimately, the original target (actual iron content) and the predicted target (predicted iron content) compare and error of them will be calculated. The obtained result is acceptable and satisfactory.

The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented. There are two major aspects to wall control blasting – the potential for any blasthole to cause wall damage and the potential for a delayed sequence of blastholes to cause damage. The damage potential of individual blastholes is governed by standoff distance and charge weight. However, for locations sufficiently close to a highwall, dynamic finite element models and field measurements show that there is also a critical nature to those blastholes very close to the wall, over and above standoff distance. At many mine sites, the charge weight/standoff-distance is set by trial and error. Thus, a significant aspect of the present work is the determination of dynamic stress radiating from a blasthole. Unfortunately, the modelling and measurement of this dynamic stress is still faced with many difficulties. Typical models have questionable aspects, which casts serious doubt over their predictions, and it is shown that the Hustrulid Bar experimental technique does not correctly account for stress wave attenuation in extended media. In an attempt to solve the dynamic stress problem, the present work describes a model based on an exact solution under the assumption of viscoelastic material. The model takes full account of the rock mass elastic/viscoelastic properties, the explosive type, geometry and primer location and predicts a dynamic stress for direct comparison with the unconfined compressive strength of the local rock mass. This model predicts the standoff distance required to avoid damage due to a single blasthole. The behaviour of a delayed sequence of blastholes is analysed using an upgraded waveform superposition model, covering a range of initiation delay combinations, which predicts the peak particle motion (PPM) induced in the wall for each combination. This approach shows that there is no need to fire dedicated trim shots close to walls; all that is required is a carefully modified production shot. The mechanism of vibration screening is discussed, and its use in a superposition model highlights the potential of reverse firing (shield blasting) to reduce wall PPM. A conceptual model is also introduced to give a further insight to vibration screening and damage (via ground heave). This model predicts that a centre-lift blast will have a central heave profile and that a reverse-fired shot will produce a smaller power trough than that produced by a standard shot. It is demonstrated that the mechanism of presplit formation is not well understood; nevertheless, experimental evidence shows that presplits can be an effective method for reducing wall vibrations.CITATION:Blair, D P, 2015. A paper identifying anticipated challenges in the extraction of the N3500 Orebody at Glencore Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations was written in 2007. The paper identified the depth of the deposit, the anticipated high stresses, talc alteration and issues with ground support as factors that may affect production. A number of strategies were planned to cope with these issues. After six years of extraction those strategies are evaluated and additional measures taken are outlined. The issue of retrenchment is a topic of considerable relevance for the Papua New Guinea (PNG) mining, petroleum and gas industries. The unique environments in which Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) and other similar operations operate are likely to confront these industries with particular dilemmas that will require a range of investments to mitigate the problems associated with retrenchment and employment. This paper discusses retrenchment and employment in the PNG mining industry using the specific case study of PJV. The paper deals with the issue of employment and retrenchment of local workforces in the PNG context, which presents a serious challenge for the resources industry and the achievement of sustainable development objectives. The issue of future retrenchment of the workforce as a result of mine closure is an obvious challenge for both PJV and the Porgeran community at large, who have now come to rely upon both the employment opportunities presented through the mining. This paper examines these challenges and in doing so highlights some progress made by PJV. The paper also discusses downsizing, strategic practices and holistic approaches of retrenchment and employment. In doing so the paper highlights issues that have been overlooked in both academic and applied studies from global and local perspectives in the PNG mining sector. The latter sections articulate the relevance of the information provided by the case study in the wider context of retrenchment. The conclusion promotes a perspective that a great deal more investment will be required by all stakeholders to respond to the challenges of managing retrenchments and mine closure.

It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. In narrow orebodies the use of ordinary kriging (OK) may pose certain limitations when used for grade control modelling. The smoothing effect of kriging, by its very nature, cannot retain or accurately characterise the dispersion (variability) that is inherent in gold deposits. This dispersion is a critical component of determining the desired level of ore loss and dilution.Fixed block model positions used in OK, and all estimation approaches, within a grade control process may never align with the ‘true’ ore boundary. This may lead to excessive ore loss and dilution, especially within narrow lodes.Using a risk-based approach to ore block design based on the geostatistical method of conditional simulation (CS) can highlight the differences achieved when an alternative method to OK is used for grade control modelling. By using a mesh of nodes and the application of a ‘transfer function’ to the simulation models, the position for ore contacts can be better assessed than when using fixed blocks in OK. Barium anomalies in drainage sediments can act as indicators of barite mineralization and path- finders for lead-zinc mineralization. Their detection in an arid climate has been investigated in two areas of Saudi Arabia. At Rabigh, 150 km north of Jeddah, barium anomalies found in wadi sediments reflect barite veins which occupy Tertiary faults in Precambrian metavolcanics and granodiorite. In the Wadi ad Dawasir area, 650 km east of Jeddah, the sediments of wadis draining the Jabal Tuwayq escarpment have been found to contain anomalous concentrations of barium derived from diagenetic barite in the Sudair formation siltstones and shales. Barium dispersion in these wadis is predominantly clastic. Near to the source rocks, barium occurs in relatively coarse grains of barite. Owing to the three well-developed cleavages of barite, its crystals readily break into cleavage flakes during fluvial transport in flash floods; as a result, the longest anomalous dispersion trains are found in the 250 to 600 um fraction. Wadi sediments finer than 250 um have relatively constant and low barium contents, being dominantly composed of windblown sand.
