In Japan, a small-diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) of diameter 2.6 m applicable to a wide range of geology from hard rock to soft strata was developed with the purpose of reducing construction costs of headrace tunnels for small hydroelectric power stations. And in 1983, a demonstration test was carried out in the No. 1 headrace tunnel work of Hayakido Hydroelectric Power Station. The principal achievements in executing work are the following: (1) Although this TBM was a demonstration test unit, excavation advances averaged more than 200 m/month and exceeded the average 150 m/month with a conventional method. (2) According to PS velocity surveys after tunnel excavation the zone of loosening due to the TBM method was small enough to be ignored and was approximately one-half compared with conventional methods in rock of the same evaluation.

The mining industry uses many types of mineral and metallurgical plants to produce saleable product from ore mined. Plant design history has left current operations with a mixture of manual operation and various forms of automated process controls. Consequently, we typically see high-variability in the continuous operations together with a shortfall in the attainment of full capacity or higher utilisation of consumables.At a level of best practice, ‘operational performance excellence’ focuses on process control, using automation and control systems to deliver process optimisation. This more sophisticated delivery is a great deal more difficult than the first stage of equipment selection/installation. It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation and control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background/experience and the essential backing/support of the operations management team together leading to higher-value delivery. Robust solutions can be realised, considerably minimising process variation, thus leading to process optimisation. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimised process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? In this paper, these questions and their possible answers are discussed.I say we can do much more and be ‘more efficient’ in our efforts to remain competitive. Rio Tinto Alcan has undertaken feasibility level assessments into the expansion of its bauxite mining operation in an area south of the Embley River in far north Queensland. The project has the potential to extend their Weipa operations by approximately 40 years.The construction and operation of two additional mineral ore processing plants are proposed for the South of Embley project. Golder Associates was engaged to develop and conduct modelling assessments of potential sources of water supply required by mineral ore processing.Two models were developed using GoldSim: a dam yield model and a water balance model. GoldSim is a graphical object-oriented modelling environment with a capacity to carry out dynamic probabilistic simulations. Originally developed by Golder, GoldSim has been applied successfully in a decision support role to a range of mine water management operations.The dam yield model was used to provide estimates of reliability and volume of annual water supply of several potential surface water dams. This information was then used to determine a hierarchy of water supply options for processing plant operations. The water balance model dynamically simulated the water demands of the two production plants and the consequential response in water supply, with respect to the timing and discharges provided by the various source options.Use of the model provided a preliminary operational tool to assist with water supply management decisions. Water quality issues required a blending of water from separate sources and attention paid to scheduling to ensure water supply through the dry season. The model also helped identify risks to water supply in the event of underperformance of one or more water supply sources. The Fosterville Goldmine in Victoria Australia employs the BIOX« Process to liberate gold from its sulfidic flotation concentrate through bacterial oxidation. Gold occurrence is primarily as submicron particles in pyrite and arsenopyrite and has been described as being in æsolid solutionÆ and therefore not amenable to direct cyanidation. Once liberated by the oxidation process, the gold is then available for cyanide leaching. During the oxidation process it has been found that a portion of the liberated gold becomes suspended in the liquid phase in what appears to be a colloidal state. This liquid becomes a waste stream during washing of the oxidised solids and the suspended gold is therefore lost. A method was previously developed using an addition of quebracho tannin to significantly reduce this loss by formation of an iron-tannin precipitate which captures the gold which then reports to the cyanide leach circuit with the oxidised concentrate solids onto which it is adsorbed.This paper discusses the development and plant trial of a second processing step to further enhance gold recovery by use of flotation tailings essentially as a source of extra surface area to capture residual tannin-iron precipitate and its associated gold not recovered in the first step.CITATION:Symes, R, 2012. The Brukunga pyrite mine was operated from 1955 to 1972 to supply feedstock for sulfuric acid production in the South Australian fertilizer industry. Iron sulfide ore, mined by Nairne Pyrite Ltd, was finely crushed and concentrated onsite with the concentrates being sent by road and rail to Port Adelaide for roasting. Waste rock was dumped at two locations on the western side of Dawesley Creek and the tailings pumped to a valley-fill storage facility on the eastern side. Production of 1.5 Mt concentrate resulted in 3.5 Mt tailings and 8 Mt waste rock. The site has been administered by the South Australian Government since August 1977 and a lime treatment plant has been operated on the site since September 1980. Environmental issues arising from these operations included: diversion of Dawesley Creek to accommodate the waste rock dumps; dumping of low-grade sulfidic ore in waste rock dumps at the angle of repose immediately adjacent to Dawesley Creek; exposed fresh sulfide mineralisation in the quarry floor; tailings storage facility dam wall constructed by upstream up-lift using tailings and waste rock; an acid water pond sited on the tailings; and pollution of natural drainage. As a result, the minesite rapidly became a source of acid drainage and potential contaminants (sulfate, Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, and Ni). Various Government bodies have been responsible for considerable effort and expenditure in reducing the flow of acid seepage and contaminants into Dawesley Creek. Presently an estimated 60 per cent of seepage from the waste rock dumps, tailings storage facility and quarry is collected and neutralised prior to discharge into the creek. Tailings have been covered with waste rock, biosolids, neutralisation sludge and soil and planted with grasses, shrubs and trees to reduce rainfall infiltration. Monitoring of water flows, water quality and riparian ecosystems is on-going. Consultants have been engaged to develop cost-effective remediation techniques and a five-member Brukunga Mine Site Remediation Board was appointed to oversee remediation of the site and liaise with the community. Construction has commenced on the diversion of Dawesley Creek, and plans are being developed for the relocation of waste rock back to the quarry benches and upgrading of the neutralisation plant. The paper examines operations, environmental monitoring, remediation, research and community involvement with respect to current best practice.

This paper explores recent industry training programs and lessons for supervisors. The Belbin Team Role model was used to increase participants’ awareness of behaviour and its application. The application of the Belbin model to underground, open cut mine and quarry supervisors is discussed.The key to team success may rest with the expertise and experience of its members, but increasingly effectiveness depends on how team members understand, acknowledge and support each other’s behavioural strengths. Discovering strengths is a challenge, both for their measurement and for the encouragement of team members to use the knowledge of themselves and others in the team. Using behavioural models provides a constructive approach and a language for supervisors as they build personal motivation and engagement.Prima facie, the mineral industry’s work may be too vigorous for teams and their managers could be more prone to use ‘solo’ or traditional management styles. Managers and supervisors must know when work allocated to a team is appropriate or where individual effort should be applauded and rewarded. For practical people with well-developed technical skills, improving the soft skills necessary for a supervisor requires some reflection and effort. The Belbin behavioural model can be an effective tool for recognising characteristics that can assist teams to be more productive.Experiencing the Belbin Team Role model as part of an industry qualification is important for supervisors studying to refine their team leadership skills. Data are available for participants to assess the nature of their teams and to confront the appropriateness of the behavioural mix for the work of the team and its individual members.So what are the next steps? All team development must have a place in the strategic thinking and plans of the enterprise. The Sons of Gwalia Mine in Western Australia is situated about 140 miles north from Kalgoorlie in arid country, where supplies of fresh water are difficult to obtain.Mine salt water is used throughout the treatment plant, whilst fresh water for domestic, boiler, and power purposes is pumped from a number of shallow outlying wells. The waters from all wells are constant in character, although they vary in the quantities of salts contained.An average sample of mixed waters gave the following analysis (Gr. per gal.):Sodium chloride 70.82Magnesium chloride 33.03Calcium chloride 26.98Calcium carbonate .. 11.57Calcium sulphate 22.71Iron oxide and alumina 2.10Silica and insoluble 4.58When this water is used in the boilers in its natural state it is scale-forming and intensely corrosive.

EnergyAustralia’s Sydney Central Business District (CBD) cable tunnel network will form a loop 6.2 km in length. The 3.2 km long, 3.5 m, diameter city east cable tunnel (CECT) currently in design, will complete the loop in 2014. This paper discusses the ventilation design of the CECT, considering operation for four functions:1. normal (unmanned),2. access (manned),3. purge, and4. emergency fire modes.The dominant design criterion which determines the required ventilation capacity for CECT is the specification of an upper air temperature limits of 35°C (dry bulb) and 24°C (wet bulb) for manned access, during all ambient weather conditions and cable heating loads. Simplistic static heat transfer analyses do not yield a sufficiently accurate calculation of tunnel air temperature and humidity to provide a safe and yet economical design. The primary refinement in the analysis discussed in this paper is associated with modelling of the system’s dynamic behaviour.Our means of analysis is through a thermo-fluid-dynamic simulation of the interactions between the diurnally and seasonally varying loads (cable heat generation, ambient air conditions and groundwater inflow), tunnel airflow and the resulting tunnel air temperature and humidity. These simulations are validated using experimental data from the existing city south and city west cable tunnels.Fire life safety scenarios are also analysed and discussed in association with the ventilation design. Ventilation strategies are developed for dealing with such emergency fire situations.The understanding and insight provided by the work offers the ability to optimise ventilation plant provisions in future cable tunnels, particularly long and high energy density tunnels.

The concept of using specially designed slot blasts to mine through stress abutments that intersect faults, while controlling fault-slip seismicity, has come of age at Mt Charlotte Mine. Due to the high and adverse stress field and the presence of major faults, the mine is vulnerable to significant fault-slip seismicity. As mining proceeded, advancing stress abutments around various mined areas encroached on several major subvertical faults. If the sequence formed a diminishing pillar between stope and fault, the removal or failure of that pillar daylighted the fault, and often resulted in significant fault-slip seismicity. A new strategy called ‘Tight Slot Blasting’ (TSB) was developed to restrain or dampen this style of fault-slip movement. The TSB has geometric similarities to a conventional cut-off slot used to create stress shadows, but its function is different. Its objective is to trigger and control a sudden shift of the stress state on a fault from an initial stable state, through an unstable transition, to a second stable state. A TSB firing advances a long tall narrow slot through a stressed abutment between a stope void and a nearby fault, using a rapid blast with a low swell ratio, so that the slot substantially and rapidly fills with blasted rock fragments. During the blast process, the stressed rock is rapidly removed and transformed into the fragmented rock fill in the slot. The strategy deliberately allows a fault-slip episode to manifest at a chosen time and place. The tight-packed broken rock in the slot performs an essential shock-absorbing function by controlling the slip amount and rate on the fault, while at the same time the fill becomes compacted by the movement. This controls the dissipation of fault-slip energy, and greatly reduces the seismic response in time and space. A small closure across the slot occurs, with consequent relaxation and destressing of the adjacent rock mass. Stress monitoring data shows that slot creation lowers the abutment stress in the nearby rock mass, while the newly placed fragmented rock fill acts as a shock absorber, providing considerable resistance to substantial fault-slip movement that otherwise could deliver a significant seismic event. First used in 2007, the strategy has been refined to become a routine specialised practice for management of seismically hazardous situations at Mt Charlotte, with 12 successful TSBs conducted to date. Despite mining through multiple high stress abutments, seismic reactions have not exceeded ML 2.1 with any TSB firing, all remaining below the site tolerable maximum of ML 2.3. This paper presents an overview of the strategy, and five case examples of the strategy in critical stressed areas in July 2016, Sept 2017, Dec 2017 and two in Oct 2020. The strategy has successfully managed the seismicity and is expected to remain an essential part of the seismic management plan at Mt Charlotte Mine.

An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an intensive leach reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in December 2007. There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every ten per cent of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1 per cent to one per cent additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall four per cent gain in plant recovery. With total gold recovery of 12 per cent in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54 g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600 g/t in the concentrator feed to the inline reactor. The recovery of gold in the inline reactor is in excess of 98.5 per cent. This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory test work prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefi ts of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.

The Basil Cu/Co deposit comprises a 26.5 Mt Inferred Resource of copper and cobalt, grading 0.57?per cent Cu and 0.05 per cent Co. It lies in the Harts Range, Central Australia, within the Riddock Amphibolite of the Irindina Province. Analysis of drilling within the mineralised zone of the deposit determined a spatial association between pyrrhotite with high magnetic susceptibility and chalcopyrite, following a strong magnetic trend as determined from airborne geophysics. A study was commissioned to examine if geophysical inversion could predict the distribution of sulfide mineralisation based on pyrrhotite from drill hole intersections, as well as predicting further mineralisation at depth or in the vicinity of the deposit. Petrophysical and geostatistical analysis of drilling susceptibility and mineralisation provided a basis of property distribution inside the model. This was followed by 3D geological modelling of mineralisation based on domain kriging of drill hole susceptibility sensitivity testing of signal to source depth, and distribution was performed using 3D forward modelling. Stochastic inversion generated alternative 3D geological models, which were tested for behaviour and adherence to observed drilling data and geostatistical limitations using GeoModeller software. Predicted mineralisation distribution was compared with conventional geostatistical modelling and found to be in agreement in planar behaviour but exhibiting possibly isoclinally folded trends, with reliability increasing closer to the surface. Predictions of mineralisation at greater depth and beneath weaker anomalies were more diffuse due to small model cell size having limited influence on the signal at depth.The Blackbush uranium deposit comprises a 64.5 Mt Inferred Resource, grading 230 ppm U in the Pirie Basin south of Whyalla, South Australia. It directly overlies the radiogenic Samphire Granite and is considered a tertiary unconformity deposit. Sensitivity modelling was performed using high-resolution ground gravity to see if a deposit signature could be detected using gravity. This required 3D implicit modelling of the geology and mineralisation from drill hole data and characterisation of an associated physical property model using domain kriging in GeoModeller. Density models relied on exploiting an observed relationship between logged density and measured uranium oxide percentage. The residual gravity response of the background geology model identified the location of the uranium deposit. Stochastic inversion of the litho/property 3D model has refined the known distribution of uranium from drilling and provided structural insights into the deposit.These projects have become excellent case studies for exploiting the relationship between mineralisation and potential fields and for testing the applicability of using domain kriging of properties determined from drilling to build robust 3D geological models for stochastic geophysical inversion, leading to robust methods for exploration targeting and mineral deposit prediction.CITATION:Zengerer, M, 2014. Integrated Remote Operations Centres (IROCs) have a crucial role in optimising a mine’s carbon emissions, especially as industry faces an imperative to achieve net-zero emissions on an accelerated timeline. To meet this time pressure, operations must adopt a comprehensive approach to energy-related carbon management and history has proven that modern technologies cannot be simply bolted into existing operations. An IROC is the most dependable solution to enable a swift transition from strategy to operational tactics that support carbon optimisation. Achieving net-zero emissions requires addressing significant energy management challenges such as fleet electrification, integration of renewable energy sources and large-scale energy storage. These challenges demand a profound change in planning, managing and executing work at large operations. The key to overcoming these challenges is an integrated approach incorporating collaborative decision-making across the value chain and more sophisticated planning approaches. Additionally, closer integration with downstream processing offers opportunities for carbon optimisation across the value chain. This includes the ability to supply tailored products that meet more varied feed-requirements of customers transitioning to less carbon-intensive processes and developing collaborative decision-making across the entire steelmaking value chain (by incorporating steelmakers, transport, coal/natural-gas/hydrogen supply, energy supply and iron-ore supply). However, this requires significant improvement in collaborative maturity and integrated decision-making capability. Finally, the imperative to reduce carbon emission demands the introduction of a range of new technologies into existing operations. The new technologies will increase the operational complexity of the mines and IROCs will need to evolve capabilities to manage the increase complexity and support the effective operationalisation and integration of these new mining technologies. This paper outlines the new capabilities required and the role of IROCs in effective integration across the demand value chain. The focus is on building on the mining industries’ existing IROC experience and augmenting with processes, technologies and lessons from other industries.

For any processing plant there will be deleterious elements or minerals which affect production or quality, and a strategy to predict their occurrence and mitigate their impact is required. An early objective of the Olympic Dam geometallurgy program was prediction of the acid consumption and gelling behaviour of the ore, which affects leach recovery, throughput and circuit availability. The geometallurgical test program measured the response of a wide range of ore types, and then relationships between mineralogy, metallurgy and chemistry were developed. Thus the drivers of acid consumption and triggers for gelling events could be described in ways that were meaningful to plant operations.To enable optimisation of the mine planning and ore blending processes, the parameters driving metallurgical response must be translated to the block model. Data support is critical in populating a block model. Assay information is easily obtained, but mineralogical and metallurgical information is more expensive and time consuming to collect. Hence population of a block model with mineralogical and metallurgical values using a conventional geostatistical approach is not always possible.An alternative approach employed at Olympic Dam was the development of a suite of assay-to-mineral algorithms. These algorithms were calibrated using all available mineralogical information, and this enabled the calculation of mineral abundances for more than 1.5 million assayed samples. Estimation of the minerals in the block model, and the generation of acid consumption values for each block could subsequently occur.The use of back-calculated mineralogy from assays as part of process model generation is an innovative tool which can be used for mine planning and optimisation and to ensure the plant does not receive any unwelcome surprises. Ultimately, one purpose of geometallurgy is to predict potential processing issues and their drivers so that these can be mitigated. A strategy to achieve this is outlined hereafter.

IGO Ltd’s (IGO) Nova Operation (Nova) is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA). Discovered by Sirius Resources NL (Sirius) in 2012 and acquired by IGO in 2015, the Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger) occurs within the Fraser Zone of the AlbanyFraser Orogen. Nova-Bollinger is a complex nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) magmatic intrusive sulfide deposit, which is characterised by high-grade folded and undulating breccia lodes that host the bulk of the payable metals. Significant sulfide mineralisation is also found in several magmatic intrusive styles including net-textured, disseminated and blebby styles. A smaller but material volume of sulfides has also been remobilised into the deposit’s footwall rocks as ‘stringer’ bands in metasediments, or as discrete massive sulfide lenses. When interpolating Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) block grades in the presence of locally varying grade connectivity trends, such as folds or undulations, the sample search neighbourhood, which is used to identify the composites subset that is used for each block estimate, should be oriented to match the local trends. In theory, the most robust method of estimation where locally varying angles (LVAs) are applied to search neighbourhoods, are techniques where the composites and the blocks to be estimated are transformed to an unfolded coordinate system (UCS). However, UCS methods can be tedious to implement and require subjective decisions to be made that cannot always be fully defended. An alternative LVA method commonly used in the industry is dynamic anisotropy (DA), which is much simpler to implement and is often assumed (but not that often demonstrated) to result in similar results to UCS-style estimation. In 2018, Nova’s Mine Geology team (MGT) estimated the grades and density of the Nova-Bollinger MRE using the UCS approach. For the 2020 MRE update, Nova’s MGT tested and compared the USC grade interpolation method with the DA approach. As applied to the Nova-Bollinger’s 2020 MRE, the comparison, advantages and disadvantages of the two estimation methods are the subject of this paper

Full-stream mechanised sampling apparatus, that collect a full cross-sectional increment from the complete screen discharge, will always be the preferred option for sampling screen overflows. However, the reality is that provisions for automated sampling are rarely, if ever, provided at the discharges of individual screens within beneficiation plants.Sampling from the discharge of high capacity vibrating screens, especially multi-slope screens, is subject to sampling bias, due to the stratification of the ore that occurs on the vibrating screen deck. The stratification in the vibrating bed translates to a stratified falling stream at the discharge end of the screen, typically with smaller particles at the back of the falling stream and large particles at the front of the falling stream (Figure 1).The chemical and physical characteristics of heterogeneous ore (mineral or coal) particles vary significantly with particle size. If samples do not correctly reflect the source material size distribution, they will be biased and the resulting analytical/assay data will not reflect the actual physical nor chemical characteristics of the source material.Prior published data for coal preparation research (Australian Coal Association Research Program) has demonstrated that a bias appears to exist for samples collected from high capacity multi-slope screens.A new form of sampling scoop has been developed with the aim of overcoming this issue.Bias was evaluated at a coal preparation plant by comparing the desliming screen overflow size distribution to that for æreferenceÆ coal preparation plant feed samples collected using the recognised stopped-belt technique. The study procured 20 sets of comparison samples in order to ensure statistical relevance.Two forms of sampling device were employed for the multislope screen discharge.A conventional square aperture scoop was demonstrated to exhibit a significant coarse bias, in that the resulting samples exhibited a significantly coarser size distribution compared to the reference samples. In other words it was evident that the conventional scoop æfavouredÆ material from the front of the falling stream.A new æcollapsibleÆ sample scoop was evaluated in parallel, and its samples were found to exhibit no relevant bias.CITATION:Atkinson, B W and Swanson, A R, 2012. "Extensive literature surveys, research in the project environment and personal experiences both within and consulting to project teams have revealed some consistent ‘people factors’ that contribute most to ultimate project success. Outside of purely technical and business case issues, there are a small number of leadership characteristics – probably only ten – that if correctly applied can positively leverage a team’s impact on project success.Of the top seven project success characteristics that were consistently highly rated in a recent study, five of them were around leadership. The authors have focused on this topic, noting that good leaders need to display the following traits:passionate commitment to deliveryconsistent modelling and reinforcement of correct values and behaviourfocus on managing relationships well and energising teams and individualscarefully clarifying project vision from front-end loading stages onwardseffective decision making.Not every project manager can and does practise these behaviours all of the time, but being aware of them and receiving training or facilitation in improving their application of these skills can equip project managers with the essential tools to markedly improve their own performance and that of their teams.This paper draws upon experiences in the field and provides lessons – both good and bad – to illustrate. As well as examining leadership traits, the way in which a leader can establish, organise, motivate his or her team and ultimately lead them to success is examined. Pine Creek Goldfields Limited (PCG) is rehabilitating the Enterprise Pit to an aquatic habitat and potential water resource. This paper discusses the development and implementation of that plan. Pine Creek Goldfields Ltd's Enterprise Mine is located approximately 230 km south of Darwin. Open cut mining of the orebody commenced in 1985 and continued for eight years with 14 million m3 of ore and overburden extracted. Geochemical testing of exposed rock types in the pit has demonstrated a propensity to produce acid, and dissolved metals. A plan of management has been developed and implemented to minimise the risk of acid formation and improve the overall water quality in the final void. In developing the plan prime consideration was given to reducing the potential for pit water to impact upon the regional groundwater. An interception system was constructed on Pine Creek to divert approximately 9 km2 of upper catchment into the northern end of the Pit. Construction of the diversion system was completed in December 1993 and a comprehensive surface and groundwater monitoring program initiated. The monitoring program and associated studies are also discussed.

The Australian Corporations Law generally requires Independent Expert Reports to be presented in support of capital raising or in defence of mergers and takeovers. The introduction of the VALMIN Code in 1995 (and its recent revision issued as the VALMIN Code, 1998) made Assessment and Valuation Reports in these circumstances much more comprehensible than before because of its key requirements for transparency and materiality. By forcing the Independent Valuer to provide an explanation of the reasoning behind the estimation of a particular resource asset, VALMIN allows the reader to clearly see any error or illogicality in the valuation methodology used and to seriously question or even reject the resulting value. Even though many elements of resource asset valuation practice are undeniably subjective, there must be some basis of objective rationality to it. Independent resource asset Valuers are the essential link between mineral explorers/miners on the one hand and brokers/analysts/fund managers/investors on the other. The minerals and financial industries both expect them to not use inappropriate or invalid valuation methods and illogical steps within these methods. This paper examines some of the less sensible ways in which some of the main techniques that Valuers commonly use to assess the fair market value of mineral properties have been applied in recent instances. The authors hope to discourage the adoption or perpetration of the æWhat-number-did-you-have-in-mind?' approach. It is MINVALÆs view that as many methods as possible should be used in any resource asset valuation. If any of the resulting estimates are in approximate agreement (particularly if they were derived using the less subjective of the available methods), ie if they cluster, they are probably more persuasive as being the Preferred Value of the asset than outlier values within the Valuation Range.

I have headed this paper with a question and for the impatient among you ûthe answer is no we have not run out of developments but, and it is a big æbutÆ, we need to be innovative and ahead of the game or ænoÆ will be æyesÆ before we know it.Why do I believe that our future lies in innovation? Thirty years ago, knowledge doubled every 14 years. It is now doubling every seven years. In 1965, Gordon Moore, one of the founders of the chip maker Intel, made an observation that growth in memory chip performance is doubled every 18 months which became known as MooreÆs Law. Now there is fibre law, where the transmission line capacity doubles every nine months and storage capacity, under disc law, doubles every 12 months. What does this mean? Well, firstly there is a massive rise in information flow and availability with no limits in growth for at least the next ten years. Secondly, unlike our grandfathers, we are most unlikely to be employed by the same firm for our working career - we may not even have the choice to stay with the same company. In a phenomenon Richard Foster and Sarah Kaplan (2001), borrowing from Schumpeter, termed æcreative destructionÆ, companies are unable to sustain market-beating levels of performance for more than ten to 15 years. In the 1920s the turnover rate of companies in the United States was 1.5 per cent, so a company could employ almost three generations from the one family. A company had a half life of 60 years. In other words, you could well be in the same working environment as your grandparents. Today the churn rate is estimated to be eight to ten per cent. A company has a half life of five to six years. So for large companies, as an employer or employee or as a contractor, your working environment has a 50 per cent chance of changing in five years. Innovation is the driver of this rapid rate of change. Innovation is not for the faint hearted (Cutler, 2001) but it is the core for success in the global economy. The rate of change in our world is not going to decrease. We must learn, not only to manage change, but to enjoy the process of changing û to ride the tsunami of the knowledge economy.

IGO Ltd’s (IGO’s) Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger) is a magmatic nickel-copper-cobalt (NiCu-Co) sulfide deposit found 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA). The deposit is hosted by the Mesoproterozoic rocks of the Fraser Zone, which is part of the Albany Fraser Orogen (AFO). Since mining commenced in 2016, IGO’s Nova Operation (Nova) has mined and processed to 31 December 2020, 5.63 Mt of ore grading 2.04 per cent Ni, 0.86 per cent Cu and 0.07 per cent Co. Nova’s mine geology team (MGT) has used commercially available implicit modelling (IM) and general-purpose resource modelling (RM) industry software systems, to prepare the 31 December 2020 (CY20) update of Nova-Bollinger’s JORC Code reportable Mineral Resource estimate (MRE). This CY20 MRE update was predominantly based on ~386 km of diamond core drilling, with the drill holes having a nominal grid spacing of 12.5 by 12.5 m throughout the mineralised zones of the deposit. Using IM tools, Nova’s MGT interpreted and modelled 22 separate domains from the drill hole logging, assaying results, and the MGT’s underground mapping. These IM closed volumes were then used to control the estimation of MRE variables into conventional industry digital block models using RM and other ancillary software systems. During 2021, a commercial machine learning (ML) software was trialled by Nova’s MGT for preparing block models of Nova-Bollinger’s MRE domains. The motivation for the trial was that the ML process could expedite modelling through the direct creation of a domain coded block model from the drill hole logging. Compared to the industry standard approaches of wireframing or IM, where the modeller usually makes many subjective choices to produce the domain model, ML offers a more objective ‘hands-off’ process for determining the connectivity of domains defined in drill holes. Additionally, the ML process provides a quantitative confidence metric associated with its output that may have utility in mine production and resource classification. In this paper, the results of the Nova-Bollinger ML modelling trial are compared to the MGT’s current workflow for MRE work. The MGT’s conclusions as to the advantages and disadvantages of the IM and ML methods for preparation of MRE domains are discussed. The ML software was also tested as a method of rapidly interpreting geology outside the principal zones of MRE interest. These testing results are also presented in this paper.
