FOR more than 25 years evaluations of coal cleaning units have appeared in many publications, and during this time considerable progress has been made in developing the theory and techniques of calculating washery results. A variety of characteristics have been defined over the years, many receiving general recognition during the first post-war Coal Preparation Conference in Paris in 1950. Coal preparation has become a science, and the approach to preparation problems is being revolutionized. Formerly, for example, if a coal operator wanted to know the performance of a given cleaning unit for a particular grade of his run-of-mine, he either shipped a carload to the manufacturer for a test run or relied on a report of a test carried out on a coal similar to the one he intended to clean. In modern practice the expensive, time-consuming test work generally can be avoided if the washability curves of the coal in question and the error curve of the cleaner are known. Normally a guarantee can be given on the strength of this information. General acceptance of modern standards has thus reduced the need for pilot-scale models of existing types of coal cleaners. Needless to say, the method requires exhaustive and accurate information on the cleaning unit and on all the additional circumstances affecting its results, in- formation that ultimately can be secured only from actual tests made in the laboratory or in the washery.

THE instrument for the rapid determination of carbon in steel, described in this paper, was developed originally to facilitate the opera-tion of the pilot-sized open-hearth furnace in the Jones & Laughlin Research and Development Laboratory. In this small furnace, with its shallow bath, the drop in carbon is accelerated, and a rapid, reliable test for carbon content is indispensable. This problem becomes rather acute when it is desired to finish heats at a carbon content higher than can be estimated with any degree of accuracy by the fracture test. Several independent methods for determining carbon were investigated, therefore, and it was found that a relatively simple magnetic device could be made to give reproducible results. A laboratory instrument was designed and set up for the use of the furnace operators. It was tested exhaustively in the laboratory and was used with considerable success for following the carbon content in the furnace bath. As soon as suffi-cient data had been compiled to indicate that the instrument might have a wider application, a more rugged model was constructed and placed in the mill to be tested on commercial heats. Finally, about a year ago, instruments were furnished to the plant open-hearth shops, and these have been in use since that time. As a matter of convenience, the instrument has been named the "Carbanalyzer," and will be referred to by this designation in the following pages. ?

THE necessity for slime elimination from valuable mineral and coal products has become increasingly significant within the past 5 years.1,2 Most of the mechanized mining and present beneficiation methods have resulted in larger tonnages of extreme fines, silts, and clay, commonly called slimes, processed by the preparation plant. Economics in turn have forced the plant operator constantly to lower the bottom size of effective beneficiation, necessitating an almost complete recovery of valuable solids regardless of particle size. When these important factors are considered, the need for an efficient slime removal method for fine solids becomes self-evident. Ordinarily slimes have been classified as ranging from 75 microns, or 200 mesh, down to colloidal dimensions of less than one micron. At the same time there is general agreement that the most troublesome slimes are primarily clays, silts and extreme fines, so that the actual top size may be placed at approximately 30 to 40 microns. This immediately restricts any desliming operation to classification, as screening or other methods would be both uneconomical and grossly inefficient at such dimensions. DURING colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still func-tioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned pros-pects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter.

THERMAL conductivities of several samples of uranium and uranium alloys were determined using an apparatus previously described.' The value previously reported for uranium,' 0.035 cal per sec per cm per "C at 70°C, is in error due to the failure of a thermocouple during the determination on uranium. The defective thermocouple was detected after a reanalysis of the data obtained during the run and since has been replaced. Subsequently, runs on several samples of uranium show the thermal conductivity of uranium to be 0.069 cal per sec per cm per 'C at 70°C. The accuracy of the determinations was checked by measuring a sample of synthetic sapphire whose thermal conductivity was previously reported and found to be in agreement with other values."-" The values given in Table I are believed correct to % 3 pct or 0.003 cal per sec per cm per "C, whichever is larger. A radioisotope tracer method combined with a suitable back-calculation method is proposed and evaluated for the determination of model simulation parameters in open-circuit continuous ball mills. The method essentially consists of using impulse and/or step injections of short-lived radioisotopes of the naturally occurring trace elements manganese and sodium. It is evaluated here on the basis of the minimum standard deviations of the product weight-size distributions. These minimum standard deviations are taken as those predicted by a Poisson distribution of the number of particles present in size fractions of the samples taken for analysis. Previously developed tanks-in-series lumped parameter models are used in the evaluation. The results indicate that the method is very promising.

THE purpose of this paper is to invite attention away from the obvious, direct monetary costs of oil-field overdevelopment (as dis-tinguished from "social costs") to a consideration of the role played by the exercise of freedom to create even allegedly excessive1 plant facilities in contributing to the maintenance of equilibrium in the whole economy and in promoting material progress. The obvious and most commonly discussed effect of overdevelop-ment of oil fields is illustrated by the allegation that already the excessive development of the East Texas field has cost upward of $162,000,000;2 in other words, the drilling of 12,500 wells more than the number esti-mated as the requirement for economical recovery of the reserve has unnecessarily raised the total cost of development that amount. Many other illustrations of so-called excessive development of oil pools could be presented. Some of them, like Cushing, Powell and Long Beach, might be drawn from the era antedating widespread discussion in the trade of such matters as optimum well spacing, reservoir energy, the conservation rate of depletion of reserves, etc. Numerous other cases can be found in the records of the current era, which began with the introduction of rationalized restriction of production. Besides East Texas, there may be mentioned Oklahoma City, Centralia and, more recently, the town-lot development of Bloomingdale, Michigan.

Ewers (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research organization, Melbourne, Australia)— Any attempt to elucidate further the meaning of the contact angle, particularly if it deals with the magnitudes of those mysterious quantities rsa and YRL, is certain to receive attention from those interested in the fundamentals of flotation. It is imperative, therefore, that attention should be drawn to a serious defect in the treatment by de Bruyn, Overbeek, and Schuhmann. Their Eq. 5 dy = — ld/u — Th2odiH2n states correctly the relationship between the change in surface free energy dy, the surface excesses Tx and Th2o of the components x and H2O and the changes du, and dph2o in the chemical potentials of these components. This equation applies for constant pressure and con- stant temperature and for the interface of the solid in contact with the solution of X. The relation remains valid when 1.1 is defined so that TH2O becomes zero and the equation becomes dr = — r:dur [17] From this equation de Bruyn et al. correctly concluded that increased adsorption of the collector at the liquid solid interface would reduce the interfacial energy ysl. Their second conclusion, however, that an increase in the contact angle, corresponding to a greater decrease in rsa than in rsL can be attributed to greater adsorption of X at the solid-air interface than at the solid-liquid interface is quite unjustified. The upper-level mineralization of the din Buttes, Arizona copper orebody consists primarily of dilute copper silicate impregnation in fault clay and throughout the altered limestone hostrock. Cuprite and native copper are minor with true chrysocolla rare. Owing to the high calcium carbonate and to the hydrogen ion exchange capacity of the clays, acid leaching would be economical only with cheap acid available. Leaching of the silicate copper with reagents other than sulfuric acid is slow and incomplete unless the ore is first heated to disorder the mineralized grains and to reduce partially the contained copper. Following heat treatment, 70 to 90 percent of the nonsulfide copper can be dissolved in aqueous anrmonium carbonate. Recovery of a pregnant solution by counter-current decantation is effective provided ammonium carbonate solution is added to the washing stages in order to oppose adsorption of dissolved copper by clays in the residue. Thermal stripping of the pregnant solution permits recovery of ammonia and carbon dioxide while precipitating copper either as oxide or carbonate. The research program was carried from batch tests through continuous miniplant operation to a five-month campaign in a 20 TPD continuous pilot plant. Pilot plant results, the relationships among key varibles, and a detailed flowsheet are given.

IN the basic open hearth process the reaction of manganese in the bath with iron oxide in the slag attains a condition very closely approximating true equilibrium, and the distribution of manganese between slag and metal during the refining period is determined by the factors which control this equilibrium condition. For this reason a number of investigators have studied this reaction both in the laboratory and under various conditions of furnace operation. The principle reaction and its equilibrium constant are: FeO (in slag) + Mn = MnO (in slag) + Fe (liq.) [1] (MnO) .= (FeO),[%Mn] The symbols in parentheses represent activities of the two oxides in the slag which, in the simple slags consisting almost wholly of the two oxides, may be assumed equal to the respective mol fractions. The symbol (FeO)r is used to denote the total iron oxide computed as FeO; or it is the sum of the mol fraction of FeO plus twice that of Fe2O3. Early attempts to obtain laboratory data on this reaction suffered from failure to appreciate the great speed of the reaction. When slag and metal are cooled slowly together, the equilibrium shifts with temperature and the final compositions correspond to equilibrium at the freezing point rather than at bath temperature. The early work of Oberhoffer and Schenck¹ and of Tammann and Oelsen² apparently suffered from this source of error. In most of the other published laboratory investigationsa. '.' this error was not present but other uncertainties have existed, notably dependence upon optical temperature measurements and exposure to atmospheric oxidation.

This paper is an account of exploration for bauxite in the Amazon Basin, Brazil, and particularly of the discovery, exploration and development of the Trombetas deposits by Alcan. A general report of the Trombetas Project has already been published in E/MJ(Anon. 1975) to which the reader is referred for details on ownership, infrastructure and construction as well as the proposal for mining and treating the bauxite. A regional account of bauxite in and around the Guyana Shield and the northern part of the Brazilian Shield is included to help explain the geology of the Trombetas deposits and their relation to other bauxites in northern South America. It is suggested that all these deposits formed during Tertiary time under similar geologic conditions.

To Install Waste Heat Boiler at White Pine White Pine Copper Co.'s smelter 18 miles southwest of Ontonagon, Mich., will have a six story high boiler utilizing what otherwise would be waste heat from a copper reverberatory furnace. Designed and under construction by the Babcock & Wilcox Co., the boiler will supply steam to a turbo-generator furnishing power for the projected development. The boiler will be in line with and following the reverberatory furnace. Using waste heat from the furnace in place of fuel for steam generation, about 50 pct of heat in the fuel originally supplied to the furnace will be recovered by the waste heat boiler. Exploration conducted over the past 15 years at White Pine, wholly owned subsidiary of Copper Range Co., has disclosed reserves of 309 million tons averaging 21.3 lb of copper per ton. Ore mineral is chiefly chalcocite (Cu2s).

THE present paper is a continuation of the work on the relationship between the magnetic and the phase transformations in carbon steels during quenching. An account was given by the author in a previous paper1 of an investigation of this relationship during a continuous quench. The experimental difficulties then encountered prevented a conclusive proof of the existence or absence of such a relationship. The conclusions of the previous paper were derived indirectly. The present paper deals with the same problem, but the method of attack is modified. The technique developed by Davenport and Bain2 in their well-known study of austenite transformation at subcritical temperature was adopted in the present investigation.. They have shown that the austenite to martensite transformation can be caused to proceed at a relatively slow rate by quenching steels into a hot metal bath. Slowing down of the rate of transformation, together with an observation by Lewis3 that a eutectoid steel can be preserved in the nonmagnetic state by such quenching, pointed out a possibility of a study of both transformations .under more favorable conditions than previously described. The preliminary steps were connected with the technique of the hot bath quench. To study this phase of the present work a modification of the apparatus previously described1 was used. The modification consisted in the use of a hot quenching bath instead of brine, and in fixing the secondary and the primary coils of the apparatus in a stationary position in and around the bath. J. J. Predali and J. M. Cases (Attachè de Recherche and Charge de Recherche, respectively, Centre de Recherches sur la Valorisation des Minerais, Institut Polytechnique de Nancy, Nancy, France)-The role of CO, in carbonate flotation is one of the parameters of a complex phenomenon: the adsorption of salts of fatty acids onto minerals. The authors therefore must be congratulated for their work. Their experimental results suggest some questions: 1) Recovery with C02, benzoic acid, or HCl, look very similar [(Fig. 1)] to that with the use of air; however, the recovery decreases very slightly (<10%). But in these two kinds of experiments, two parameters are different: the pH which is near 5.8 (with C02) becomes 9.1(without C02) and the concentration of Ca* I x 10-3 mole per 1 (without C02) becomes 1.9 X 10&apos; mole per 1 (without COO. 2) Adsorption experiments (Fig. 2) permit computing the surface coverage 9 which is 7.4% (without C02) and 8% (without CO_.) for an initial concentration of 12 X 10-6 mole per 1 in sodium oleate. It seems doubtful to us that this small variation can produce large increases of the recovery in flotation. 3) It is difficult to correlate adsoption and flotation experiments because they do not seem to have been done with the same size of particles. The concentration needed to obtain 95% recovery (Fig. 1) is about 3.0 X 10_" mole per l, that is, 1.13 X 10-6 mole for about

In this paper are described various comparative tests made on cracked and straight run gasolines. The results of these tests may be briefly summarized as follows: Samples of 54 to 55° Bé. gravity cracked gasolines, with end point of about 442° F., and with a somewhat larger proportion of the less volatile fractions than conformable to government specifications, were used in a single cylinder variable compression engine under the same conditions as were samples of straight run gasoline of 58 to 59° Bé. gravity, and of which one had a greater proportion of the more volatile fractions than called for in government specifications. The cracked gasolines showed decidedly less tendency to knock, hence could be used at higher compression ratios and thereby developed from 10 to 20 per cent. more power than did the straight run gasolines. These figures may be taken as one measure of the superiority of the cracked gasolines under test with the straight run gasolines. It is not claimed that all cracked gasolines are superior to all straight run gasolines to the extent indicated by the above tests; cracked gasolines vary as do the straight run products. Cross&apos;s work and that of others have indicated that certain cracked products may have a much greater superiority over straight run than that determined above. From various sources and by different methods of testing data are being obtained to show the definite and generally quite considerable superiority, as an anti-Cetonating fuel of cracked gasolines over straight run gasolines. It is now becoming generally recognized that by increasing the production of cracked gasoline motor fuel from those heavier petroleum fractions, which otherwise would be used for burning purposes, the petroleum industry is not only working in the interest of the conservation of the world&apos;s supply of petroleum, but is at the same time making available to the gasoline-consuming public a product distinctly superior to the straight run gasolines.

In extension of a suggestion already made to account for certain features observed in the Juneau gold-belt in southeastern Alaska,&apos; it is the object of the present paper to indicate in detail certain conditions in which deformation of rocks under their own weight might lead to the production of fractures in which veins could be deposited. A direct, uniformly-distributed pressure of sufficient intensity, applied to an elastic brittle mass offering strung resistance to deformation, produces rupture. In a material of ideal properties the surfaces of rupture under such pressure would be shearing planes inclined at 45&apos; to the line of force, unless there be preliminary deformation, in which case this angle would be greater than 45. This general conclusion, resting upon analytical mechanics, is completely supported by the results obtained by DaubrBe2 in experiments upon the deformation of wax and resin prisms under compression. Let us then first consider one of Daubree&apos;s diagrams. In the case illustrated in Fig. 1, four sets of fractures in two approximately right-angled pairs (that is to say, in conjugate sets) were produced by endwise compression of a square cross-sectioned prism. These fractures cut the axis of compression at approximately equal angles, not varying greatly from 45o. The location of the four sets of fractures is obviously determined by the shape of the prism, since the material in each corner acts in a way as a buttress, permitting the bulging to take place most readily on the sides. Based on a simplified model for the motion of particulate materials in horizontal, rotating cylinders, approximate expressions have been derived relating the power consumption of a tumbling mill to its dimensions and speed of rotation and to the amount and nature of the charge. The basic assumptions underlying the model are that there is no slip between the charge and the mill shell, that the free surface of the charge remains essentially planar during rotation, and that there is no transfer of momentum from the material flowing down the free surface back to the mill shell. The relationships formulated from this model have been shown to be in excellent agreement with experimental results taken from the literature. While the requirements of the model are most clearly met at low speeds of rotation, the results appear to be valid even for speeds up to 70-80% of the critical speed. Poorer agreement between theory and experiment is found when the charge consists of relatively large particles (balls) and when the filling of the mill exceeds 50% of the available volume. Qualitative explanations of these deviations have been offered.

IN order to determine the magnitude of thermal conductivity changes resulting from alloying vanadium with titanium and a few other elements, several sam~les were PrePared and measured. The thermal conductivity -values reported herein in Table I were determined with an apparatus previously described.&apos; As in recently reported2 determinations on uranium and uranium alloys, whose thermal conductivities are in the same range as vanadium," the accuracy of the values was checked by using synthetic sapphire." The error in the measurement is estimated to be &apos;-3 pct or 0.003 cal sec-1 cm-l "C-1, whichever is larger. The vanadium used in preparing the samples was the calcium-reduced type and was supplied by the Electro Metallurgical Co. as 99.6+ pct pure. All alloying elements used in the preparations were 99+ pct pure. A nonconsumable tungsten electrode arc furnace was used for melting the alloys and, without opening the furnace, each ingot was re-melted a number of times to insure homogeneity. The samples as prepared by the Armour Research Foundation were machined from as forged material without annealing. Acknowledgment The note is based on work performed under the auspices of the AEC. SUMMARY This is a report of a new development in on-line particle size measurement of fine powders in dust-laden gases. A continuous sample of the solids-air suspension is drawn from the process stream via a sampling probe by means of an air operated ejector into a cyclonic separator whereby the sample is subjected to a particle size dependent separation process and split into two streams, "overflow" and "underflow". The overflow stream carries most of the fines at a relatively low concentration and the underflow stream carries the coarse particles at a relatively higher concentration. The concentration of solids in the two streams is detected by electrostatic noise level technique which utilises the electrostatic charge accumulated on the solid particles due to their high velocity in the turbulent air stream, for the mass concentration measurement. The ratio of the solids concentration of the fines stream to that of the coarse stream is then correlated against the average particle size in the main process stream by a calibration curve. The in-plant tests clearly indicate that this relatively simple instrument offers good sensitivity in the size range from 2 to 6 µm, and is capable of giving a continuous indication of average particle size for process control purposes. Although the instrument was developed for a particular application, it may be used in other situations where fine powders are conveyed in gas streams. British and foreign patents are applied for.

AT a recent meeting of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, during a discussion upon the compression of air, attention was called to an apparent anomaly in the phenomena attending the compression. At a subsequent meeting this apparent anomaly was explained by Prof. Herschel, and all the facts observed shown to be strictly in accordance with the laws of thermodynamics. Upon reading the report of the discussion in the published transactions of the society, it occurred to me that an attempt to determine mathematically the amounts of energy (whether in the form of heat or of work) expended and absorbed in compressing air, and causing it to perform work by expansion, might prove of use to some who have not access to any treatise upon the application of the laws of thermodynamics to the compression of air, and who have not the time or the inclination to make such application for themselves.
