Digital simulation is a modern analysis tool which allows the mine operator to evaluate the result of making a decision without actually changing the organization or buying the equipment. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the use of digital simulation in evaluating a decision of whether or not to introduce dispatching in an open pit mine. The analysis shows that appreciable savings can be realized by dispatching. In certain cases, an operator can reduce the number of trucks required to move a specified tonnage. A second analysis evaluates the alternatives of using one large shovel or two smaller units. In this case, the operating cost of the haulage equipment necessary to support the shovels turns out to be the critical factor in this decision.

This paper deals with frequency distributions in the field of mineral resource evaluation when a grid is superimposed on the study area and metallogenetically significant attributes are coded with respect to the cells of the grid. It is shown that the parameters of a negative binomial distribution for frequency of mineral deposits per cell can be derived from the parameters of a gamma distribution for the coded attributes. It is also shown that an exponential model for spatial correlation of cell values and Matheron's discrete Gaussian model for indirect transfer functions may provide a suitable methodology for relating cell value distribution to cell size.

The term "splint" seems to have been adopted to describe the fracture of the hard bituminous coals of West Virginia. It is not a scientific name, but rather a trade term, and does not indicate a correspondence with English splint. At present it is a popular word, and is very loosely applied to coals of various qualities, in the desire & improve their sale. The Kanawha splint is distinguished by its hardness, dull lustre, coarse fibrous structure, its purity, and especially its resistance to atmospheric influence. It kindles very readily, burns with a bright flame, but does not cake, so that a lump when half consumed, may be broken by a slight blow in its plane of cleavage, though it will resist a strong blow in any other direction. To the question, " Do the Pennsylvania anthracites contain phosphorus?" asked at the last meeting of the Institute during the discussion on the metallurgical value of Western lignites, I can now give a definite answer. Through the kindness of a gentleman connected with the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, and another connected with one of the principal ironworks on the Lehigh, there was sent to the Ironmasters' Laboratory a number of samples of the coals now largely shipped from the Schuylkill and Lehigh regions. IT is the object of the present paper to bring to the notice of members of this Institute, the results of experiments made during the past six months in the manufacture of the alloys of iron and manganese in the blast-furnace. The ores at hand and available for the purpose were brown hematites, containing but a very small percentage of manganese, and various manganese ores containing a small percentage of iron. It is hardly necessary here to call attention to the statements regarding the production of iron-manganese alloys from such ores, which are given by all the well-recognized authorities on metallurgy. Suffice it to say, in a few words, that they hold that the operation is practically impossible, and that in the use of oxides of iron and manganese, mechanically intermixed in the same ore, much difficulty has been found in producing spiegeleisen. Spathic ores, containing manganese chemically combined, are alone recommended for the production of spiegel, and even then it is said that well-managed furnaces produce only about 75 to 80 per cent. of spiegel, the balance of the production being white laminated pig or gray iron.

Oscar Rohn was born in Jackson, Wis., June 27, 1870. He attended the University of Wisconsin and there gained from Professor Van Hise his inspiration for scientific effort and useful attainment. While a student at Wisconsin he was interested in athletics and was a member of the first eight-oared crew that Wisconsin sent to compete with Eastern crews at Poughkeepsie. There was a marked increase in the investigation of undeveloped areas in Colombia during 1936. The Shell company commenced geological and geophysical investigations on an intensive scale in the Upper Magdalena Valley and at the end of the year had several geological and geophysical parties working in that area. These investigations were supplemented by aerial photography and it is understood that negotiations are under way for having this work continued. The Shell is reported to have acquired some options and leases on private properties in the Upper Valley region and in the western part of Cundinamarca. The Socony Vacuum was making preparations to begin seismograph work on its property north of the Sogamoso River, acquired in 1934 from Sefior Luciano Restrepo. This company will probably start drilling on the property during 1937. The Richmond Petroleum Co. (Standard of California) is said to have renewed geological investigations in the Upper Magdalena Valley above Honda. Local Colombian interests took an active part in applying for concessions on nationally owned lands in the area between the Carare and Magdalena Rivers. There are in this country some 20 or 30 societies for engineers and engineering scientists. Most of these organizations are autonomous, and there is little or no cooperation among them. Many do not touch the lives of our Institute members. However, during the course of the years several societies closely associated with the AIME have banded together to handle specific situations where cooperation was necessary. It is believed by many engineers that the functions of these cooperative societies should be analyzed and a plan set up to unify the engineering profession into an organization similar to the American Medical Association and the American Bar Association. The preliminary study of the AIME Committee for Inter-Engineering Society Cooperation has indicated that the following organizations bear upon the professional lives of our members. Some of these are federated groups, such as EJC and ECPD; others are individual-member participation groups, such as the Founder Societies and NSPE.

The recent dedication of Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel, Ariz., electrolytic copper refinery and rod casting plant marks the culmination of a three year, $250 million expansion-modernization program. The new facilities will eventually permit an annual production of 200,000 tons of marketable copper for direct sale to fabricators. The Newmont Mining Corp. subsidiary will produce and market continuous cast 5/16 in. copper redraw rod, full plate cathode copper and sheared cathode plate under its own brand name. Among the four largest in the nation, the new refinery and plant, was built at a cost of $34 million and will be fully automated. In addition, all materials used in the plant will be recycled and no waste, discard or emissions will occur.

Conventional roof bolting may be giving ground to a new technique that utilizes only the ground itself to stabilize mine openings. This newly developed stress control technique (SCT) has initially been used in sedimentary ore bodies that are both overlain and underlain by weak strata. The technique is also suited to the design of production panels and main entry systems, and is readily adaptable to room and pillar as well as total- extraction mining, including both shortwall and longwall coal mining. In applications where the technique has been used, the requirements for roof bolting and floor renewal were virtually eliminated. The SCT comprises three basic methods and covers a wide range of problems associated with failing roofs and heaving floors in underground mines (see Table 1).
