INTRODUCTION This chapter summarizes porphyry copper deposits within the State of Alaska. Prospecting for porphyry copper-type deposits in Alaska germinated during the 1940's, grew slowly during the '50's, boomed during the '60's, and matured in the '70's. Although large expenditures have been made in the search for porphyry-type deposits, most accrued data lies dormant in company files. However, an adequate base exists in the literature for a general synthesis of areas that contain porphyry prospects. To simplify the summary, porphyry molybdenum deposits as defined by Clark (1972) are omitted. Description of deposits in their geologic setting permits some correlations between deposit characteristics and crustal environment. These correlations allow speculation about the genesis of the deposits. The summary also attempts to group deposits on the basis of general mineralogic characteristics because diorite model deposits are separated from quartz phenocryst-bearing hosts. Data presented in this chapter summarize observations by the author, published descriptions of specific areas and deposits as noted in the bibliography, and comments by various government geologists. E. M. MacKevett, Jr., D. H. Richter, and H. C. Berg of the US Geological Survey have been particularly helpful. Because few comprehensive descriptions of individual porphyry copper deposits exist for this area, much of the data presented is new to the literature. Details of structure, isotopic geochemistry, and petro- genesis for individual deposits are largely lacking and even the general geology of some belts is not well understood. Details on petrography of Alaskan porphyry copper occurrences are inadequate for construction of ternary diagrams (e.g., Figs. 36a, b, pp. 103, 104, for the northern Cordilleran orogen). Petrographic descriptions summarized in the text are largely from published descriptions whose sources are cited. Porphyry copper-type deposits in Alaska include deposits with pervasive pyrite that contain disseminated copper (but not necessarily coproduct molybdenum). Available data preclude differentiating the deposits by size. No Alaskan porphyry copper deposit is now in production but this is believed to be, in part, a function of economics. In some cases available geologic information is in- adequate for classifying deposits. Some de- posits included with porphyry copper may, with further exploration, be demonstrated to be some other genetic type. Alaska has three distinct porphyry copper provinces: the Hogatza plutonic belt, the Continental Margin belt, and the Interior belt. There are three distinct varieties of phosphate rock, in Tennessee, known commercially as: (a) the "brown" rock, which is the residual product of the weathering and natural concentration of certain phosphatic Ordovician limestones; (b) the "blue" rock, which is an unaltered phosphatic stratum of Mississippian or Devonian age; and (c) the "white" rock, which is the result of chemical replacement and deposition. Before 1894, South Carolina and Florida had supplied most of the phosphate of the United States, South Carolina leading until that date and Florida from then until the present time. In December, 1893, the blue phosphate of Tennessee was discovered almost simultaneously on Swan Creek, in Lewis County, by two independent parties—by one as the result of a careful and systematic search for a workable deposit of the long known kidney phosphate, and by the other through mistaking it for a "bloom" of coal. Leases were taken and, with further prospecting disclosing other deposits in the region, the development progressed as rapidly as could be expected without railroad transportation. In January, 1896, Judge S. Q. Weatherly, who was interested in the development of the blue phosphate, while riding along the road south of Mt. Pleasant, noticed some slabs of a brown rock in place above the limestone. He took samples, and had them analyzed, thus discovering the high-grade brown phosphate of this district. This discovery was kept a secret until July, 1896, when mining was started at the village of Mt. Pleasant. Development proceeded rapidly, many owners obtaining their capital by the sale of their rock fences, which were largely composed of slabs of high-grade brown phosphate. The development of the brown rock, which is richer and more easily mined than the blue, caused Tennessee to advance from a poor third in production to second, surpassing the output of South Carolina, and being excelled only by Florida.

Much has been said about the foreseeable exhaustion of known mineral reserves-particularly in the United States. It is claimed that we are about to become a have-not nation insofar as certain essential minerals are concerned; and in this respect our position is often contrasted with that of the world as a whole, largely because we have drawn so heavily on our domestic resources during the last fifty years. As a matter of fact, the difference is not great if one takes a reasonably long-term view of the situation. No one denies that nature endowed the United States richer in mineral resources than any other equal area. It is granted that we have skimmed the cream of many kinds of minerals; but in a free international trade in minerals it would not be many decades before the richer deposits-at least the deposits easy of discovery throughout the world would be depleted to much the same degree as those in the United States today. For it is a fact that the problem of satisfying the needs of our industrial society for minerals is fundamentally worldwide in scope. The singular and significant attribute to all minerals is that there is but a single crop. Forests can be grown, but mineral deposits can be replaced only by finding new ones. Thus, one of the vital tasks of the mining engineer, the petroleum engineer, and the geologist is to find these new mineral resources. Another task is to devise means and methods for the exploitation of, at costs that are economic, low-grade deposits and those deeply buried in the crust of the earth. The first need, however, is to find the deposits in the ground. If the assumptions of those who today fear an early exhaustion of all deposits are valid, the outlook for continued material and social progress is gloomy indeed. I take a more optimistic view, for it is my belief that vast new sources of needed minerals will have come to light before our known resources are gone. The real question is whether the outside layer of the crust of the earth that is accessible to engineers contains adequate mineral deposits; and whether engineers can find those deposits. The answer must be based on geologic science, geologic fact, and mining history. Every continent, and almost every country, has yielded minerals of industrial utility in substantial quantity. Mineral deposits are widespread. Geologists know the conditions that were favorable to the occurrence of ores and the types of rocks in which various kinds of ores may ordinarily be found. They know that such rocks occur over broad regions of the earth's surface. They also know that in large areas rocks that are potential carriers of ores are covered and concealed by material of entirely different character. Such cover may consist of lava flows, layers of volcanic ash, or beds of material washed down from the surrounding mountains. Sometimes those covers are thick, sometimes relatively thin. But men well-qualified to pass judgment are sure that concealed deposits, large in number and in size, exist close enough to the surface to make exploitation practical. Only by actual penetration of the surface can this contention be proved, but to conclude otherwise would be to ignore the laws of probability and to deny the over-all consistency of nature. The task of probing the crust of the earth to determine the location of these deposits, and to obtain some notion of their size and quality, poses serious problems. However, they should not be beyond human solution. Much more research must be done in analyzing and explaining the laws of ore deposition. New tools, in the shape of techniques and methods and of mechanical and electrical devices and instruments, must be developed. But no reasonable person can doubt that these objectives will be achieved. As the need becomes increasingly pressing, scientists and engineers will supply the imagination and the ingenuity that will provide the solution. The time and effort thus far devoted to the development of methods for locating hidden ore bodies have been pitifully meager. Energetic investigation of the subject of applied geophysics is essential to the success of the mineral industry, and I have no hesitation in predicting that effective techniques will be found and successfully applied. As shown in three recent papers by the author,6,7,8 in two papers by McAdam and Mebs,9,10 and in a paper by McAdam, Mebs, and Geil,11 the technical cohesive strength of a metal, in any particular state as regards mechanical treatment and heat-treatment, cannot be represented by a single stress value, but must be represented by a diagram with the principal stresses? as coordinates. Each point on the boundary of such a diagram represents a technical cohesion limit. The technical cohesive strength thus comprises an infinite number of technical cohesion limits, each representing fracture under a specific stress combination. Moreover, neither the yield strengths nor the ultimate strength can be represented completely by a single stress value, but must be represented by a diagram with the principal stresses as coordinates. All combinations of the principal stresses may be classified in three groups as illustrated by Fig. I. Fig. Ia shows three typical stress combinations with no two principal stresses equal. The magnitude of each principal stress is indicated qualitatively by the length of the arrow. Arrows pointing away from the cube indicate tensile stresses; arrows pointing toward the cube indicate compressive stresses. Typical stress combinations with two principal stresses equal are illustrated in Figs. Ib and Ic. Such stress combinations would be produced by subjecting a cylinder to combinations of uniform axial and radial stresses. The uniform radial stress may be resolved into two equal principal stresses, with the mutually perpendicular directions rotatable around the axis of the cylinder. Fig. Ib shows stress combinations with S2 equal to Sa. The greatest principal stress is in the axial direction, and the stress combination tends to cause either absolute or relative increase in length.* Fig. Ia shows stress combinations with Ss equal to Sl. The greatest principal stress is in the radial direction, and the combination tends to cause either absolute or relative decrease in length. The complete representation of either technical cohesive strength, yield strength, or ultimate strength generally requires a three-dimensional diagram. When two of the principal stresses are kept equal, however, the strength of a metal may be represented by a two-dimensional diagram with the coordinates representing the axial and radial stresses.6-11 In this paper, attention will be confined almost entirely to stress combinations with two of the prin-

The production of oil by water flooding can be substantially increased by the maintenance of free gas saturation in the reservoir during the flooding operation. This effect is accomplished by the alteration of oil relative permeability characteristics and the occupation by gas of pore space that would otherwise be filled with residual oil. The amount of reduction In residual oil can be calculated from appropriate water-oil relative permeability characteristics. This paper presents experimental data in support of the foregoing conclusions and an example of the calculations. The microscopic pore saturation concepts of the mechanism are discussed. A method of practical application to field floods is presented together with discussion of certain limitations. INTRODUCTION The presence of free gas has been reported by a number of investigators to significantly affect the oil recovery which can be obtained from sandstone flow systems by water flooding.1,2,3,4,5 The effect of gas, noted in every instance, has been to cause lower residual oil saturations than could be obtained by water flooding the same systems in the absence of free gas. The degree of improvement in recovery has been observed to vary widely, depending on the systems used and the conditions of the tests. The increased oil recovery obtained because of the presence of gas during a water flood has been variously attributed to changes in physical characteristics of the oil, selective plugging action of the gas, inclusion of oil mist in the free gas phase, and the additional sweeping or driving action of the free gas. All but the first of these suggestions imply changes in the displacement mechanism. The change in viscosity and inter-facial tension of the oil phase, within the pressure range used for all the experimental work, is certainly not sufficient to account for the differences in residual oil saturation noted dess there is a drastic change in the displacement process. One other effect which logically seems capable of causing differences in residual oil saturation of the magnitude noted in the experimental work is that of simple replacement. In a water-wet system containing oil, water, and gas, it is to be expected that the gas will exist inside the oil. This is the position of minimum free surface energy, since the gas-oil interfacial tension will be less than the gas-water interfacial tension. There is no apparent reason to expect that the existence of free gas within the oil phase should alter the saturation at which the non-wetting phase (now oil and gas) should become discontinuous and hence trapped so as to be unrecoverable by direct displacement by water. If this is the situation, then trapping of a certain percentage of gas saturation during water flood should result, at infinite water-oil ratio, in a like reduction of oil saturation below that attainable by flooding in the absence of free gas. It is visualized that the gas will exist as bubbles inside the discontinuous residual oil as illustrated in Fig. 1, with the size of the oil bubbles being substantially unchanged due to the presence of the gas. As a practical matter, it can be anticipated that the presence of a free gas saturation inside the oil phase will reduce the relative permeability to oil which will exist at any particular water saturation. This reduction will be caused by two factors — -the addition of the gas-oil interface, and the reduction of area available for oil flow in the pores containing gas. This reduction in oil permeability at any particular water saturation will result in water breakthrough at a lower water satu-

The construction and operation of by product coke-oven plants in America are essential to strong national defense and of the greatest importance to many widely diversified undertakings as well as to safety and health. Carbonization Process Coal used under a boiler or in a locomotive is consumed by combustion. Coal used in a by-product oven is distilled or carbonized, meaning that heat is applied to the coal, out of contact with air, causing a distillation that removes the volatile matter in the coal in the form of gas and vapor, leaving coke as a final product. From the gas and vapor distilled from the coal, many valuable substances can be secured, known as by-products. Hence the name "by-product oven." The simplest example of this principle can be shown by means of an ordinary clay pipe. If powdered coal is placed in the bowl of the pipe, the opening of the bowl is plugged with clay, and the bowl placed in a flame, the bowl will become hot, transferring the heat through the wall of the bowl to the coal within. When this coal attains a temperature of about 750°F., gas will begin to pour out of the pipe stem, and this gas may be lighted. A black liquid also will exude from the stem of the pipe, This is tar mixed with certain other products. What remains in the bowl after distillation is coke. A coke oven corresponds to the bowl of the pipe. A modern oven of the latest type is a refractory brick chamber approximately 42 ft. long and 14 ft. high, averaging 18 in. in width. The oven is filled with coal through closable charging holes in the oven top. Each end of the oven consists entirely of a self-sealing door, the removal of which permits the finished coke to be discharged by means of a power-operated pusher machine. The ovens are built in batteries, and the heating is effected by gas burned in vertical flues in the oven walls, each set of flues heating the walls of two adjacent ovens. Such ovens carbonize a charge of approximately 18 tons of coal in 18 hr., or have a daily throughput of 24 tons per oven, producing about 17 tons of coke. In times of need, the output may be increased by raising the temperature of flues, thus shortening the coking time. There is one great essential difference in principle between distillation in a clay pipe and in a coke oven. In the 18-in. oven, the distillation proceeds from two parallel walls held at a high temperature (over zooo°F.) and instead of all the coal being heated at once, the distillation is a progressive one creeping inward. The average travel of this heating is 35 in. per hour from each vertical wall, and as the volatile products are formed progressively they must push away from the interior toward the wall through the previously formed hot coke, then up the walls and Over the top of the coal charge, finally escaping through the outlet pipe. This results in a cracking of the components into many different and valuable substances not formed when the carbonizing temperature is low.

Practical metallurgists are unanimous in stating that oxidation of mined sulphide ore adversely affects separation of the constituent minerals under standard conditions in a mill. Frequently, the need for different operating conditions in different plants is attributed either to the extent of oxidation of the mineral surfaces or to soluble oxidation products. The investigations reported in this paper study the effect of oxidation on the primary condition necessary for flotation, namely that of adhesion of an air bubble to the mineral. Oxidation Products from Sulphide Minerals Weinig and Carpenter1 state that the relative rates of oxidation of some sulphides are: FeAsS > FeS2 > CuFeS2 > ZnS > pbS > Cu2S tetrahedrite. They also show that oxidation is rapid at first, that sulphides of older geological formations are more stable than those of recent date and that mixtures oxidize more rapidly than any one mineral alone. The more rapid oxidation of mixtures is borne out by results of Gottschalk and Buehler2 who found that PbS, zns and cus oxidized 8 to 20 times faster when pyrite was present. Only the end products of oxidation, sulphate and the metal ion, were identified in these tests. Gaudin3 states that pyrite is difficult to oxidize in the laboratory. Winchell,4 using pyrite containing 99.98 pct FeS2, allowed water to percolate through a bed of this ground material. At the end of three months only a trace of Fe+++and So4- were found. Even after 10 months the quantity of Fe+++ was only 7.8 mg and SO4- 25.5 mg per liter of percolating solution. Car-michael5 confirmed Winchell's results on the slow oxidation of pyrite. Usually the oxidation of sulphide surfaces has been conducted in neutral or acid solutions, the acidity being caused by the oxidation products. Eliseev and Nagir-nyaka found that treatment of pure pyrite with lime gave only thiosulphate, but considered it possible that thiosulphate was obtained not by oxidation of the pyrite itself, but by oxidation of calcium disul-hide. Mitrofanov7 suggested that thiO~ulphate was formed by the following process: oxidation of sulphide to give free sulphur (this frequently happens with marcasite), followed by oxidation of the sulphur to sulphur dioxide and reaction of the sulphur dioxide with sulphur to give thiosulphate. Monazite is one of the minerals which, for a long time, was considered somewhat rare in its occurrence, but, upon a commercial demand arising for it, prospectors and engineers soon located large deposits of it in the Carolinas arid Brazil, and the supply has always been able to meet the demand. During 1908 further sources of supply of monazite have been discovered and developed in Idaho. North and South Carolina, however, are the only States that have thus far put any monazite on the market. Monazite is essentially an anhydrous phosphate of the rare-earth metals,ceriunl, lanthanum, and didymium,(Ce,La,Di)PO,. There is nearly always present a varying but small percentage of thoria, Tho2, and silicic acid, SiO2,, which are very probably united in the form of a thorium silicate, ThSiO4. Some mona-zites contain but a fraction of a per cent. of thoria, while others have been recorded that showed the presence of from 18 to 32 per cent.; but the majority contain from 3 to 9 per cent. of this oxide. It is the presence of the thorium oxide that gives the monazite its commercial value. The analysis occasionally shows also the presence of other constituents, as the yttrium and erbium oxides, zirconia, alumina, magnesia, lime, iron oxides, manganese oxide, and titanium oxide. Monazite is light-yellow, honey-yellow, reddish-, brownish-, or greenish-yellop. in color, with a resinous to vitreous luster, and is translucent to subtransparent. It is brittle, with a con-choidal to uneven fracture, and is from 5 to 5.5 in hardness, and from 4.64 to 5.3 in specific gravity. BACKGROUND Foreign investment has been a major factor in bringing about the substantial mining industries of Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Brasil and Guyana. But economic nationalism and sentiment against foreiqn domination of vital national industries grew in the 1960s and most major mining projects were transferred into state owner ship. Among the state mining enterprises formed were CODELCO - Chile, MINERO-PERU/ CENTRCMIN - Peru, CCMIBOL - Bolivia (in 1952), Hierro-PERU, GUY-BAU/BIDCO - Guyana, etc. New investment during that time was discouraged because it was subject to the restrictive conditions of the investment regulations of the Andean-Pact, a grouping of Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia. The philisophy was that mineral resources were to be developed exclusively by national enterprises. Essential foreign inputs had to be acquired "depackaged" as separate purchases of equipment and technical assistance services. As a result of the worldwide economic recession which hit the mining industries in 1980-1982, many projects that were viable in 1970 were not developed by the new state enterprises due to lack of capital, managerial and technical abilities and due to problems with marketing. As a consequence of the long-term decline of metal prices, governments experienced difficulty in getting investment organized through national or foreign enterprises and have had to face up to the trade-offs between national control and active mineral development. A change has since taken place in governmental policies. The 1981 Peruvian mining law, the 1982 mining law of Uruguay, the 1979/1980 mineral promotion laws of Argentina, all witness the gradual shifting of emphasis from restriction to promotion. The investment rules of the Andean Pact have been progressively softened through national regulation and today are more or less irrelevant. Nationalizations and forced renegotiations have not occurred in the last few years. Countries have gone to great lengths (without much success) to re-attract foreign investment on terms that accommodate the political sensitivities of the South American countries and the practical requirements of investors and financiers. For this analysis, three contracts have been selected which reflect this accommodation in three South American countries, where miner a1 production plays a major role in the national economy. These con tracts reflect both the attitudes and traditions of the individual countries, but also mark the shift in mineral investment policies that has taken place. EL INDIO AGREEMENT The 1977 investment agreement between Chile and St. Joe Minerals marked a dramatic relationship between Chile and foreign mining investor s. In Chile, mining of copper has played a major role in the country's history. Large scale copper mining was initiated and developed by Kennecott and Anaconda. The nationalization of these two companies under the Allende government in July 1971 started a wave of nationalizations of foreign-held mining and petroleum operations since then in many parts of the world. The military government supported the new Chilean state mining companies ((30DELCO and ENMI) , but it also attempted to accelerate mineral development by prom ting foreign private investment, thus reversing the nationalistic policies followed by the Allende and the preceding Frei government. DEVELOPMENT of a chemical process for the extraction of pure metals from mill concentrates or metal scrap has progressed beyond the pilot plant stage and may prove an important adjunct to present smelting and refining methods if initial commercial operations prove economically successful. Developed by the Chemical Construction Corp., the new process involves the treatment of oxide and sulphide ore concentrates by chemical methods, instead of the usual smelting and refining techniques. Several of the many applications are now scheduled for commercial use. Refiners using the new process will prepare ore concentrates by standard flotation methods, introduce the concentrate as a slurry into an autoclave along with water and an acid or ammonia. From the resulting leach solution, recovery of individual metals is made by use of suitable reducing agents. By varying conditions during treatment, different metals in the ore are produced separately as pure powders, which may be pressed into forms ready to market, or in the case of copper, extruded as rods or pipe. The reagents are generally recovered. By manipulating the variables during reduction, selective separation of nickel, and/or cobalt, and/or copper can be made simultaneously. The separation is a continuous operation. Low metal prices are not immediately in view because of the tremendous demand at this time. However, reduced metallurgical treatment costs will allow economical mining of orebodies with lower metal content, permitting increased production to meet demand. Although the practical horizon for use of the new process appears to be limitless, one factor may enter into its employment. Just how low grade a concentrate can be economically used is unknown. In addition, for present practical considerations, only metal below zinc in the electromotive series may be processed. Each commercial application requires specific technique adaptation and pilot-plant data for engineering design. A nickel-cobalt-copper process has been researched and piloted in collaboration with Sherritt Gordon Mines, Ltd., for the firm's Lynn Lake properties. In addition, processes were tailored for cobalt concentrates of Howe Sound Mining Co., and National Lead Co., in view of the urgent need for this specific metal. Major General William N. Porter, president of Chemical Construction, says of the new process, "piloting experience has shown that production cost, from ore concentrates to pure metals should be considerably below current costs." Other savings may be realized by cutting transportation and personnel costs, and by reducing the time lag between mining and pure metal from months to a matter of hours. First commercial use of the process will start sometime this summer. Chemico is slated to finish building a $2.5 million cobalt refinery for Howe Sound Mining near Salt Lake City. The plant is expected to raise world cobalt production by 40 pct. The plant will process 35 tons of 20 pct cobalt concentrates from Howe Sound's Blackbird mine near Cobalt, Idaho, daily. Yearly production is expected to reach 2000 tons of pure metal, about one half of U. S. consumption in 1950. Steps in the Howe Sound application of the process are: 1. Acid oxidation leach. 2. Filtration (residues thrown away are insoluble compounds-gangue, iron, arsenic). 3. Cementation (for Cu removal because Cu content is too low for recovery). 4. Reduction from ammoniacal solution. 5. Separation of Co and Ni as mixed metals (95 pct Co and 5 pct Ni). 6. Recovery of ammonium sulphate. The dissolution of salt in the development of salt cavities is controlled by free-convection boundary layer flow along the salt surfaces. It is the purpose of this paper to expand upon results published previously, and primarily to illustrate the influence of surface features on the boundary layer and hence the dissolution process in the development of underground salt cavities. General dissolution equations are presented that apply to a surface inclined to the vertical. A salt surface inclined so as to be overlain by water is dissolved by boundary layer flow, while an inverted surface is dissolved by a combination of boundary layer and cellular flow. Detailed investigation of the boundary layer was limited to laminar free-convection flow. Truly laminar free-convection boundary layer flow may be encountered only in laboratory solution cavities, but the boundary layer will control dissolution even where cavity dimensions are such that free-convection turbulence will occur. The factors found to significantly affect the laminar boundary layer will affect dissolution with a turbulent boundary layer. INTRODUCTION Underground salt cavities have been used extensively for the storage of LPG products, and the use of these cavities is expanding each year. The increasing requirements for such cavities suggest the need for a better understanding of the mechanisms involved, for the purpose of the control of cavity geometry and the most effective use of the injected water. A previous paper outlined a quantitative approach to the determination of salt dissolution rates in the laminar free-convection dissolution of salt. It is the purpose of this paper to expand upon the results previously published and to point out significant factors in the application of these results to the dissolution of field cavities. The dissolution of salt in laboratory scale cavities is controlled by the free-convection boundary layer, which is the region of flow along the salt surface caused by the difference in buoyancy forces resulting from the salt dissolution. The transfer of salt into solution at the salt face causes an increase in salinity, and hence a greater density, in the water at the salt surface. The region of higher density tends to fall through the lighter, less saline water and a flowing boundary layer is the result. The water remains stationary at the contact with the salt surface,l so the resulting velocity profile is such that the influence of gravity is opposed by a viscous shear force at the salt surface. For salt to be transferred into solution from a solid surface to a boundary layer of fluid, it must diffuse through a stationary film of water at the salt contact. According to Fick's first law, the rate of mass transfer by diffusion is the product of the diffusion coefficient and the concentration gradient, with diffusion transfer in the direction of decreasing salinity. Once the salt has passed into the boundary layer, it will be transferred by a combination of molecular diffusion and convection. The convection transfer will in turn affect the rate of dissolution by influencing the gradient of the salt concentration at the surface. In the previous investigation by the authors to determine the basic mechanism of the salt dissolution process, an equation was developed that agreed very well with the experimental rates of free-convection salt dissolution from a smooth vertical surface. The technique was taken from the work of Eckert2 in the analogous heat transfer system and will be referred to as the integral method. This paper is a continuation of two earlier papers,12 and presents new data on the grindability of various ores and other materials—the results of several years of intermittent research work on the nature of grinding and interpretation of test results. It is divided into five parts: 1. The tabulated results of several hundred grindability tests on a wide variety of ores. 2. A method of correcting screen analyses and calculating from them the surface and other properties. 3. A description of a new method of measuring the "surface energy" of an ore by pendulum impact tests. 4. Test results. 5. A general discussion of the test results and their application to grinding problems. 1. GRindability of Various Ores This part is a continuation of the paper listed as reference No. 1. The method of testing is described in detail in that paper. The sample to be tested is crushed to all through 6 mesh in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening in closed circuit with a screen. Of this sample 700 C.C. is ground dry in a laboratory ball mill under constant conditions of mill speed and ball charge in closed circuit with a screen of the desired size at 250 per cent circulating load. The mill is cylindrical, 12 by 12 in., and rotates at 70 r.p.m. It contains a charge of 285 iron balls weighing 20,125 grams and ranging from 1½ to ¾ in. in diameter. Each test is continued for a sufficient number of periods to establish equilibrium at 250 per cent circulating load, or until the composition of the circulating load is constant for successive periods. Tests are conducted at the mesh size to which the ore is to be ground in practice, and the results are expressed as the net production in grams of screen undersize per revolution of the mill. By means of inert markers of radio-platinum, it has been shown that cobalt metal oxidizes by out-ward diffusion of cobalt atoms through the oxide. Oxidation rates have been measured at various temperatures and oxygen pressures and have been found to agree with the rates calculated from the Wagner equation and the authors' values for the diffusion coefficient of cobalt in the oxide. The distribution of radio-cobalt in growing oxide loyers has been accurately measured and found to be different from that predicted from the Wagner oxidation theory. Attempts have been made to measure the change of lattice parameter of the oxide with composition. SEVERAL investigators have shown that cobalt metal oxidizes according to the parabolic law,1-3 but no detailed study has been made of the oxidation mechanism. Cobaltous oxide has a metal-deficient lattice, but the defect concentration which is dependent on the oxygen pressure is only approximately known.' From the similarities in the structures of "CoO" and "FeO" and the rate laws governing the oxidation of cobalt and iron, Gulbransen- as suggested that cobalt, like iron," oxidizes by diffusion of cobaltous ions through the oxide layer. To substantiate this hypothesis, he has attempted to measure the oxidation rate of cobalt as a function of the oxygen pressure but has been able to report only that the rate depends on a "small" power of the pressure. On the other hand, Preece," Valensi,' and Arkharov' all have suggested from indirect evidence that oxygen diffuses through the COO to the metal-oxide interface. The present authors, in a previous paper,' have shown that the rate of diffusion of cobalt in cobaltous oxide is dependent on the oxygen pressure. In that investigation, they also found that cobaltous oxide disks made by complete oxidation of cobalt metal were porous at their centers (Fig. 5L, ref. 4). Both these facts strongly suggest that oxidation of the metal proceeds via outward diffusion of cations. In order to establish the mechanism unequivocally, oxidation experiments were made with inert radioactive platinum markers, and the dependence of oxidation rate on oxygen pressure was measured. In addition, an attempt was made to determine the form of the cation vacancy gradient, which the marker experiment showed must exist across a growing oxide layer. This was done by depositing radioactive Co on the surface of a cobalt disk and then measuring the tracer distribution across the oxide layer produced by partial oxidation of the metal. Finally, an X-ray examination was made in an attempt to find the expected change of lattice parameter of COO with oxygen pressure. Experimental The apparatus and materials used were substantially the same as those previously described by the authors.4 Marker Studies: The use of inert markers to follow oxidation reactions was first attempted by Pfeil" in 1929, and radioactive markers have recently been used by Davies et al.' In the investigation reported here, the markers were applied as an (NH4)2PtCI6 slurry in several thin streaks across both faces of four disks of cobalt metal 1 mm thick and 14 mm in diameter. The disks were then oxidized almost to completion at 1200°C in pure oxygen. After oxidation, they were mounted and sectioned and auto-radiographs were taken to locate the markers. Oxidation Rate: The oxidation rate of cobalt was measured at 1148°C at oxygen pressures ranging from 0.0055 to 1.0 atm and at 1000°, 1148", and 1350°C under 1 atm of oxygen. The rate was deter-

Knowledge of the theory underlying the behavior of mixtures of fluids in reservoir rocks is essential to the proper solution of certain types of problems in petroleum production, but is as yet incompletely developed. The object of this paper is to show the application of well established thermody-namic and physical principles to these problems, and thus to assist in the development of the basic theory. For convenience the problems to be considered here may be divided into two groups: 1. Static problems, involving only the static balance between capillary forces and those due to the difference in densities of the fluids; i.e., gravitational forces. 2. Dynamic problems, involving analysis of the motion oi mixtures of immiscible fluids in porous media under the influence of forces due to gravity, capillarity, and an impressed external pressure differential. Capillary Equilbrium in Sands Under this heading the static type of problem will be discussed and the results of experimental investigations on the capillary properties of unconsolidated sands will be presented. Although the discussion of this section is, in a sense, prefatory to the treatment of problems of mixture flow, the concepts developed here have considerable intrinsic importance apart from their ap-plication to flow problems. For, it is reason-able to postulate that the reservoir fluids are, owing to their long existence in undis- turbed mutual contact prior to exploitation, in substantial equilibrium. It follows that their distribution in the reservoir at the time of tapping should be entirely predictable from the theory of capillary equi librium, provided certain experimentally measurable properties of the reservoir rock are known. Knowledge of the distribution of the several fluids in the reservoir is, ol course, helpful in the estimation of reserves and in other problems. It is to be emphasized that throughout the discussion of capillary statics it is assumed that the fluids are in equilibrium from the capillary standpoint. Thus, water, where it is referred to as being in a reservoir, will be understood to be interstitial water, present at the time of drilling the reservoir, commonly termed "connate" water. The theory developed here is perfectly general for any porous solid, whether a carefully prepared unconsolidated sand or a natural sandstone from an oil reservoir. At present, however, only problems involving clean, unconsolidated sands can be made to yield numerical solutions, since only such sands have been adequately investigated experimentally. Experimental evaluation of the pertinent properties 01 natural reservoir rocks will permit the extension of the numerical treatment to problems involving these materials. We shall now consider in some detail the static equilibrium of fluid mixtures in porous solids: that is, the manner in which the reservoir fluids are distributed vertically whell the Forces due to capillarity are just balanccd by those due to gravitation.

THE Cr,O-type, or P-tungsten, structure having the space group (Oh2— Pm,n) is one of the most widely occurring structures found among the intermediate phases involving transition metals. Including the phases reported here for the first time, the total number of these A,B phases now known is 39. Greenfield and Beck' have correlated the lattice parameters of these phases with the Goldschmidt radius of the close-packed chains of A atoms. Laves' discussed the apparent size of the A and B atoms in this structure. Gel1er" proposed a scheme for reproducing the lattice constants of the phases by the use of a list of effective C.N. 12 radii for the component elements. Reported here is a survey of the A,B combinations which appeared favorable for the stability of the Cr,O-type phase but which, at the time the investigation was begun, either had not been reported upon or had conflicting reports as to the existence of the structure. Seventy systems were investigated, and 8 Cr,,O-type structures were found. Six of these also were reported by other investigators in the interval between the start of this investigation and its completion. This survey yielded information as to the influence of the relative sizes of the A and B atoms on the stability of the phase and, for the various families of Cr,O-type phases, the effects of the sizes of the A and B atoms on the lattice constant. Likewise, a somewhat clearer picture of the connection between the position of the A and B elements in the Periodic Table and their Cr,O-type phase-forming tendencies has become apparent. Introduction There is probably no field in which materials research has played a greater role than that of electronics. However, to trace present and future patterns of materials research in electronics is not an easy assignment, since this industry has a high degree of dynamism in its growth, and is busily engaged today in the scientific improbabilities of only recent yesterdays. On the other hand, this task seems especially appropriate since electronics is a truly frontier industry - one whose place in American industries has advanced from 50th prior to World War II to 6th in 1967, with sales of more than $22 billion. And this growth has been associated with the equally rapid progress of science and technology over the period - in particular with the emergence of materials science as a vital force in underscoring this progress. For several reasons this parallel growth is not too surprising. First, by its very definition electronics is a science that essentially deals with the nature, behavior, detection, generation, control and utilization of electrons in solids or at their surfaces. Second, in the electronics industry, systems are made of an integration of components, and these components with their interconnections are made of materials. Thus, the basic building blocks of systems are materials; and it has been largely the advances in materials research and technology that have led to new and improved devices and systems. It follows, therefore, that the broadening of the frontiers in electronics through the exploration of new territories is tantamount to scientific discovery and materials innovation to a degree found in no other major industrial activity. But to put this in the proper perspective of present and future materials trends, it would be appropriate first to survey historically the progress in electronics by pointing out major scientific discoveries and associated materials research patterns that have led directly to its tremendous growth. Then from this base we can consider recent trends in materials research that could form the basis for future progress in the electronics industry. In my review I shall examine the areas most familiar to me, so I must acknowledge at the outset that this survey is not all-inclusive.

This paper "On Coal" was published in three issues of The Western Gleaner in 1814. Name of author is not given. This magazine was started by Cramer, Spear & Eichbaum, in Pittsburgh, Pa., in December 1813, and ran for about two years. Copies are very rare, and this one is made from an original in the Darlington Library, University of Pittsburgh. This is almost certainly the first general article on coal published west of the Allegheny Mountains, and one of the earliest in this country. ON COAL Its Natural History-Mining of Coal-Phenomena occasioned by Fire-damp-Method of Coking-Distillation of Tar from Pit-coal-Gas-light-Coal, a Manure I. NATURAL HISTORY OF COAL There are few productions of nature which present to the philosopher a wider field of investigation than pit-coal. A substance highly inflammable is found in the deep recesses of the earth, sometimes loaded with numerous superincumbent strata of hard rock, and extending frequently along with these strata through a vast expanse of territory. Though metals may be said to be inflammable substances, as they combine more or less rapidly with oxygen when placed under particular circumstances, yet the character of rapid combustion with disengagement of light and heat, seems to belong. principally to such substances as are derived either from the animal or vegetable kingdom. That this is probably the case with regard to coal we are further induced to believe, by the remarkable circumstance, that the chemical analysis of this natural production yields especially, though in various proportions, those materials which constitute essentially the vegetable. And if any thing was wanting to confirm, us in that opinion we might trace in a number of fossile substances the gradual transition of the vegetable into the state of mineral coal. This fact is so intimately connected with the natural history of coal, that we cannot think it superfluous to give it some farther development. Among the great number of principles which the chemist is capable of tracing in the vegetable kingdom, the presence of extract, resin and fibre seem to form the characteristical marks of plants.-If vegetable matter be boiled in water, and the water, after having been strained and filtered, be exposed for some time to the open air, a flocculent precipitate takes `place from every part of the liquor; which soon subsides to the bottom of the vessel containing it. This is the extract; altered, indeed, by exposure, and now no longer soluble in water, a change which is supposed to depend on the absorption of oxygen; and if, by any means the proportion of oxygen be increased, the extract gradually becomes of a darker color, blackens, and approaches to the state of charred wood.

THIS chapter and Chapter 19 deal with the heat quantities involved in open-hearth steelmaking, including the thermal efficiency of the furnace as a generator of high-temperature heat, the heat storage in the steel and slag produced and in the furnace walls, and the heats of the various chemical reactions involved in combustion, in the formation of slag, and the refining of steel. The fundamental laws to be considered are the first two laws of thermodynamics as applied to problems involving sensible and potential (or latent) heat only: 1. Heat input equals heat outflow plus storage. 2. Heat may be transferred only from a hotter body to a colder one. The first of these laws relates to the various heat quantities or the heat balance of the process. No one has as yet made an open-hearth heat balance that came out almost exactly balanced. The cause probably lies in the difficulties of accurate temperature and flow-rate measurements at the high temperatures involved and the inherent complexities in flow distribution and air leakage present in any real open-hearth furnace system. Some idea of the magnitude of the heat quantities involved can be obtained by a brief, crude outline of the heat balance of a 90-ton heat of steel. We will assume a 60 to 70 per cent hot- metal charge in a fairly fast working and only moderately efficient furnace, burning fuel oil, with a fuel consumption of around 4 million Btu per net ton of ingots produced. The time from start of charge to tap is 9 hr. During this period, the oil burned represents 360 million Btu and the sensible heat in the preheated air at the port ends is 117 million Btu, so that the total heat input at the ports is 477 million Btu. Heat stored in the steel and slag at the end of the heat, plus the various amounts absorbed by certain bath reactions, amounts to a total of 195 million Btu, but 120 million of this is supplied by the heat in the hot metal and by various heat-evolving reactions in the bath,

THE deposits described in this paper occur over much of Wayne County and in the southeast portion of Hardin County, Tennessee, and in the northeast and northwest portions of. Mississippi and Alabama respec-tively. The presence of tripoli in this region has been known for some time and descriptions of various occurrences in Tennessee have been made by Jewell1 and Miser2, while Hilgard3, Lowe4 and Logan5 have treated the deposits that occur in the adjacent portions of Alabama and Mississippi, but there has not been a general survey of the entire field summarizing completely the geology of the deposits with respect to their origin and stratigraphic relationships. During 1934, while engaged in surveys of mineral resources through this region for the Tennessee Valley Authority, the writer collected data with this in mind, and has assembled them in this report. The purpose of this paper is to review the history of the Drumlummon, one of the famous old mines of the West. Mining engineers, when sent to examine new mines in old districts, or, to decide whether an old property, under new conditions, will pay to reopen, have had difficulty in learning anything authentic regarding workings which are under water, and historical facts about the working character of the ore, the total production, and the value of the ore with increasing depth. 'Not many years elapse after the pumps are pulled, before maps, books and records are destroyed, and the value of the publications of the Institute would be increased if they contained the history of many old mines now abandoned. The unsuccessful efforts of the writer quite recently in trying to obtain reliable information about a gold mine which was reported to have produced several million dollars between 1880 and 1888, the workings of which are now partially caved and under water, impressed upon his mind the desirability of having a permanent record of old properties. In this particular case, the owners insisted that under present conditions of improved methods of treatment —particularly by the use of cyanide, which was not an applied process when the mine was operated, the property could be made to pay a handsome profit on ore left in sight in the old workings, but no assay records could be found to confirm these assurances, and even the records of bullion shipments had been destroyed. If surveys and maps were made as the work progressed, no trace of them could be found, and therefore opening of the ground through a new shaft and drifts therefrom would be attended by some risk while exploring near the old workings. Fatal accidents by flooding under these conditions have occurred, and as an evidence that miners have fears of such dangers, it was urged upon the Mining Committee during a recent session of the Montana Legislature, by a delegation of
