Chan and Goodman (1983) presented a procedure for simulating joint traces and identifying key blocks on an excavation. This paper defines six measures of support requirements that characterize the number and dimensions of key blocks, taking into account the frictional properties of joints and actions of support systems. When correlated with case histories, these measures of support requirements can help in choosing an optimal design for shallow excavations in discontinuous hard rocks.

Leaching of a granitic rock mass by slightly acid groundwater brings uranium and genetically related ions into solution in groundwater. Uranium and related ions are moved through the vadose zone by groundwater which in turn moves through zones of greatest transmissivity into a deep zone of increased hydrostatic pressure. Cyclic wetting causes the hydrostatic condition to fluctuate causing recycling described by Gruner (op cit). Multiple cycling flushes the uranium ions from rock being leached and moves it via this method to permeable beds-channels-in the deep zone.

Five factors are required for the formation of uranium deposits: a source, transporting medium, host, trap, and preservation. Locating and evaluating uranium deposits requires ail integration of methods and techniques to determine if the above factors are present. A typical exploration program consists of selection of a favorable area, field reconnaissance, land acquisition, and target definition and evaluation. Target definition and evaluation utilizes a combination of geologic mapping, geochemical surveying, geophysical surveying, and drilling and logging. Each overlaps the others to some degree.

The evaluation and selection of coals for producing metallurgical coke is indeed a complex process simply because coal is a complex and variable substance which is sensitive to how it is treated from the time it is mined until it is transformed into coke. A review of some of the more common evaluation tests made on coal and how the test results are applied in commercial practice should be of interest. Parameters used to select coking coal blends for wet and preheated charges should also be of interest.

Mankind has found lime and limestone a useful mineral commodity since the dawn of history. The ancient Egyptians knew how to make use of it as a building material, and it has been used in agriculture for centuries. More recently, limestone became a cheap ingredient in some chemical processes, in metallurgy and in the manufacture of alkalis. The consumption of lime and limestone has never diminished; in fact, the process of lime production remained the same until the recent introduction of the modern rotary or vertical kilns. However, the demands of industry and agriculture are changing the usage patterns of the commodity. The USBM now keeps statistics according to type- quicklime, hydrated lime and dead-burned dolomite -and according to market, whether open or captive.

Successful mining of taconite has required the solution of a series of difficult problems, including more efficient magnetic separation. Progress in this field is evidenced by reductions in operating and capital costs made possible by the advances in permanent magnetic materials and in new circuits for better utilization of these materials. The advent of the flux control circuit appears to be one of the more important breakthroughs in permanent magnet drum design circuitry and has contributed greatly to the economics and metallurgical requirements of the modern day taconite concentrators. High strength permanent magnetic separators are now replacing electro types in many applications requiring field strengths of 900 - 1000 gauss measured at 2 in. This is made possible by the new circuits having gauss readings at 2 in. previously attained only by electromagnets.

Production of crude oil in Tennessee during 1943 was approximately 8200 bbl., slightly less than the 1942 production, Counties. Some half dozen wells in Clay, Fentress, and Pickett Counties, pumped intermittently, produced about 1000 barrels. Natural gas was marketed from wells in Morgan and Fentress Counties for consumption in the Sunbright and Jamestown areas, respectively. The Morgan County production was about I0,000,000 cu. ft. and approximately 8,000,000 cu. ft. was produced from the Jamestown gas field from six wells. The production of oil by counties is shown in Table I. Thirteen wells were spudded during the year; three were drilling on Dec. I, 1943. Of the nine completions, representing 10,488 ft. of hole, three were gas' wells of commercial size although only one of them has been placed on the line. The completions are listed in Table 2. As successfully pilot-tested at a quarry producing limestone for a large cement plant, swiftly flowing streams of rock enter the Gromax Selector. They are electronically scanned while in motion and light reflection data flashed to logic circuits. The logic circuits compute the total light deviations in each rock as it passes the scanner. Thus, a rock with striated or spotted impurities can be rejected or accepted on the basis of its proportional content. The actual case history of this equipment's development at a limestone quarry in the Southeast serves to illustrate its general area of usefulness.

This work contains a description of a new design of lemniscate-guided powered roof support units, with a discussion of currently designed supports and their interaction with the roof. Conventional roof supports of this type present a serious reaction with the roof because of the horizontal displacement of the canopy in the course of decreasing support height as the support takes weight. The new design presented eliminates previous disadvantages of lemniscate supports and ensures proper performance of the latter in relation to the roof of a mine working.

On October 20, 1964, in his Waldorf Towers suite, death came to Herbert Clark Hoover, 31st President of the United States. At his bedside were his two sons, Allan A. and Herbert Hoover, Jr. Many years of humanitarian and public service earned him the gratitude of millions here and abroad. The Nation mourned his death. For the mining fraternity and AIME in particular, the life of Herbert Hoover held particular meaning. During the years from 1895 to 1914 when he was actively engaged in mining, he conducted himself with extraordinary competence, energy and integrity. In the years following, when his qualities of administration and leadership literally forced him into the limelight, he continued his interest and lent his talents for the benefit of the engineering profession.
