The electronic pickup tube is the image-to-video signal-converter or transducer in tele vision-like systems. Images may relate to visible light or IR excitation as in conventional TV systems, X-ray excitation as in some medical and production control applications, or electron excitation as in electron microscopy. The latter process is also important in some forms of light or X-ray sensitive pickup tubes as an intermediate step. In virtually all of these devices the image ends up as a stored charge pattern on a suitable target electrode and the video signal is created by periodically scanning the target with a low energy electron beam and removing the stored charge. In a major group of tubes radiation induced conductivity creates the charge pattern. In others, photoemission is used. In this paper an attempt is made to illuminate some of the device requirements placed on materials exhibiting radiation induced conductivity, some of the materials and techniques that are used, and the problems. The emphasis will be on visible light and IR sensitive targets although some attention will be given to X-ray and electron imaging. Photoconducting films as well as diode arrays will be discussed. ELECTRONIC pickup tubes find their greatest use in commercial, entertainment television, and in industrial and educational closed-circuit television. Video telephone systems, such as AT&T's PICTURE-PHONE System will become eventually the greatest user. Military use is also very important. Nevertheless the use of electronic pickup tubes in technology, science, and medicine is assuming ever greater relevance and demands the greatest diversity and perfection in the pickup tube art. Commercial television and closed-circuit television use requires visible light response, high resolution, low lag, and uniform response. Video telephone use requires the same plus extreme reliability, stability, and low cost. Military use emphasizes, in addition, sensitivity, IR response, and ruggedness. (Devices for far IR response will not be considered here.) The use of pickup tubes in medicine and biology emphasizes UV response for microscopy, X-ray response for radiology, and energetic electron response for electron microscopy. Astronomy and nuclear physics demands low light level response, storage ability, and resolution (here the tube is a successful replacement for film). The interested reader might profitably read Advances in Electronics and Electron Physics, vol. 12,' 16,2 and 22A3 and 22B4 for detailed discussion of the use, properties, and technology of electronic pickup tubes. In general, because of the importance of these uses, none of the above properties will be ignored. Nevertheless attention will be restricted to only those imaging devices, called pickup tubes, using a scanning electron beam to dissect the image with a resulting video signal for conventional CRT display. However pickup tubes have become so complex that many of them include components such as image in-tensifiers which would be normally excluded by this restriction. Thus some of the other imaging devices will not be ignored entirely. We will first review the fundamental elements and physical phenomena involved in modern electronic pickup tubes, then the relevant materials and some of the material problems and then an interesting goal yet to be achieved. REVIEW OF PICKUP TUBE PRINCIPLES In all modern television systems using pickup tubes there is an interval called the frame interval, during which the incoming radiation flux is allowed to produce a cumulative effect in the form of a stored charge pattern which is a replica of the radiation image, and a scan interval during which the stored charge pattern is converted into a video signal. The frame interval bears no fixed relation to the scan interval and may be shorter or longer. In conventional, real time television the scan interval including retrace is identical to the frame interval. Integration and storage is the key to the sensitivity of modern pickup tubes, in contrast to earlier tubes such as the image dissector. At equivalent light levels and without integration, the number of photons contributing to the video signal in the image dissector is lower by a factor approximating the number of picture elements in the displayed image, a number of order 10. Statistical fluctuations in the number of contributing photons represent a serious limitation to the attainable signal to noise ratio, resolution and contrast. As a result considerably greater light levels have to be used then in targets which integrate over the full frame period. Thus the crucial elements, common to all modern pickup tubes, are the charge storage surface and the scanning electron beam which is incident on the charge storage surface at very low energy. These are shown in Fig. 1(a). The charge storage insulator is generally very thin with a thickness of several microns or less. The surface of the insulator is held near cathode potential. The backplate potential is held at cathode potential or at a small positive voltage relative to cathode. The combination of storage insulator and backplate electrode is commonly called the "target". The high temperature physical properties of graphite are reviewed and interpreted in the light of present day knowledge of the mechanisms affecting these properties. The thermal and mechanical behaviors only are discussed and, whenever possible, comparisons are made with other refractory materials. Possible further studies are indicated, including some carbide work. AS long as the term high temperature implied only temperatures up to about 1000°C, the materials problems which arose could usually be handled by fairly conventional metal alloy types, such as the Co-Cr-Ni superalloys, for which there exists a great deal of technology. Perhaps this temperature can still be considered an upper limit for normal applications, but it is certainly true that the number of abnormal applications is increasing rapidly. The advent, in recent years, of ram-jet and rocket missiles and of high power nuclear reactor heat sources has raised a host of questions concerning the basic problem of what material to use in the temperature range up to 2000°C and higher. While there are, of course, many metals, in the second and third transition series, which melt at considerably higher temperatures than this, these metals are, at present, pretty well excluded from practical use by other considerations, such as re-crystallization, chemical activity, or excessive plastic deformation. The behavior of metals, from the standpoint of dislocation theory, is just beginning to be understood and thus there is some hope for the future development of very high temperature metals, but the immediate problems would most logically appear to have solutions involving the nonmetals, such as the refractory ceramics and graphite. For this reason, there is presently a great deal of engineering and experimental research being performed on the latter materials, much of this research being exploratory in the sense of gathering new property data. The situation, so far as graphite is concerned, is somewhat more fortunate than with the other refractory solids in the sense that a great deal is already known about its basic properties. This stems both from the fact that the carbon-carbon bond has been of interest to chemists for a long time (and graphite can be considered as a very large aromatic molecule, if desired) and the fact that its properties, both as a function of temperature and of radiation damage, are of critical importance to nuclear reactor designers. It is still true, of course, that such fundamental questions as why graphite remains solid to such a high temperature and why it has such a high thermal conductivity cannot entirely be answered at the present time. It is, nonetheless, meaningful and instructive to consider such problems in the light of existing knowledge. This is what the present paper will attempt to do. Before going on, it may be appropriate to classify graphite and justify its discussion before readers primarily interested in metals. Graphite is comparatively unique among materials in that there is always a property or group of properties which precludes calling it either a metal, a semiconductor, or a ceramic. It has the high electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal, but the artificial, poly-crystalline types show a negative thermal coefficient of electrical resistivity, generally characteristic of semiconductors. On the other hand, semiconductors, by definition, show an ever increasing resistivity as the temperature is lowered, whereas graphite approaches a finite, and, indeed, a rather low resistivity in the region of 10°K and, furthermore, a good single crystal of graphite has a positive temperature coefficient, as for a metal.' On still another hand, its porosity and brittleness at lower temperatures would put graphite in the ceramic class although, unlike most ceramics, it is readily machinable and has a high resistance to thermal shock. All things considered, it is probably more nearly appropriate to call graphite a metal than anything else. Although certainly outstanding in some ways, graphite has its peculiarities and, especially if the reader is unfamiliar with the data, it is probably valuable to review some representative property variations at high temperature. This review is meant to be mainly illustrative and no attempt has been made to be exhaustive. Review of High Temperature Properties At ordinary pressures, graphite does not melt, but sublimes directly into the gaseous phase at about 3700°C. Although the phase equilibrium diagram is still in some doubt, graphite will melt, at a slightly higher temperature, at pressures in excess of about 100 atm. The chief difficulty of using graphite in an oxidizing atmosphere is that the reaction rate becomes quite high at fairly low temperatures. If a threshold oxidation temperature2 is defined as the temperature at which graphite loses 1 pet of its weight in 24 hr, the value in air is 450°, the value in steam is 700°, and the value in carbon dioxide is 900°C. Efforts are presently being made to raise this threshold temperature either by impregnation with a retardant of some type (sodium tung-state and phosphoric acid, for example) or by a suitable metal or oxide coating. It is probably fair to say that, to date, these attempts have not shown any outstanding success in all respects. IN the early decades of the past century the method of starting iron blast-furnaces by "scaffolding-down" seems to have been in universal use for coke-furnaces and, at least in this country, for charcoal-furnaces also. It was likewise used at some of the early anthracite-furnaces, as is stated in the important "Reminiscences" printed by the late Samuel Thomas. I It had been generally superseded in Great Britain as early as 1850, by some variations of the plan now used, and was rarely used when Percy wrote.' On the Continent it was still followed in the 60's,3 and was elaborately described by Valerius in 1852. I have never read any statement as to when and by whom '4 scaffolding" was first dispensed with, but the following extracts from journals of my father seem to fix an authentic date for an instance in this country:

E UGAR RICKARD comes of a long line of mining men and was born at Pontgibaud, France, in 1874, where his father was then in the course of his professional work. Later his father came to California and was until his death prominently connected with milling in that state and Nevada. Edgar Rickard grew up at Berkeley, attended the University of California, graduated in 1895 from the mechanical engineering course, and remained a year longer for post-graduate work in the College of Mining. His first job was as assarer for the Mountain Copper Co., Keswick, Cal., in 1896. The following year he was assayer and surveyor for the Cornucopia Mines, Oregon. In 1898, he joined the staff of the Venture Corporation, London, and for two years made examinations for them in various parts of the world. He served as mine manager at Cripple Creek and at the Briseis tin mine, in Tasmania. From 1901 to 1905, he was general manager of the Progress Mining Co. in Lower California, but when his cousin, T. A. Rickard, bought the Mining and Scientific Press he was persuaded to come to San Francisco as business manager of that periodical. A few years later the two cousins went to London and started the Mining Magewine there as a joint venture, Edgar being the business manager. In 1915, he took over control, T. A. Rickard returning to California to devote his time to the Mining u.rbd Scientific Press. In 1917 Edgar Rickard sold out to his British associates and came home to serve in the Food Administration through the war. Rickard was one of the first of the American engineers called to his staff when Herbert Hoover began his relief work by helping stranded Americans home at the be- ginning of the war and he has been with him constantly since in the Commission for Relief in Belgium, the

For the past two and one-half years, various emission control strategies were jointly developed by the University of Arizona and the Homer City Owners to com- ply with the clean air requirements at its Homer City Power Plant. Some of the available options for the SO2 emission control by the Homer City Owners were:l)cleaning of run-of-mine coal,2) scheduling of mining operations at its captive mines, 3) blending the captive mine coal with externally purchased low sulfur coa1,and 4) placing a partial FGD system. This paper describes two specific emission control strategies developed and implemented. These are: 1) production scheduling at the mining face to minimize sulfur variability, and 2) external purchasing of low sulfur coal for further blending. The main objective of this paper is to share our experiences on implementing the developed strategies. This paper emphasizesthe need for proper mine planning on a short-term basis, if the power plant is to meet the desired objective.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910,) THE Altar district, State of Sonora, Mexico, is for the most part a desert with but little rain-fall and few running streams. On account of this scarcity of water it is necessary for the natives to " dry-wash" the placer-gravel, and the object of the present paper is to describe some of the more common Mexican dry-washing devices. My observations were confined to a property known as Las Palomas placers, 15 miles from the Gulf of California and about 150 miles south of the United States border; a brief description of which property may be of interest as illustrating what is, perhaps, a typical Sonora dry placer. It is said that as long as a century ago the Yaqui Indians discovered rich cement-gravel, known as argo masa, at Las Palomas, and that there has been a more or less steady production of gold from the property ever since. The argo masa is a fairly-coarse gravel, the pebbles being quite firmly held together with a lime cement. Gold is scattered through this cement in particles ranging from fine specks to pieces several grams in weight, and occasional large nuggets are encountered. The contents vary so widely that it is difficult to estimate the average value, but returns of from $10 to $50 per cubic yard are common, and it is doubtful if the Indians considered anything less than from $4 to $5 a yard as "pay dirt." This argo masa occurs in channels varying in thickness from a few inches to several feet, and in width up to 300 ft.. These channels are continuous and are probably ancient stream-beds. They are for the most part covered with an over-burden of a more recent gravel, varying from 30 to 50 ft. thick, and the fact that this over-burden contains values as high as $1.50 per cubic yard, and yet was not worked by the Indians, shows that their idea of what constituted pay-ground was high.

PROBABLY no well-informed engineer would ques¬tion the accuracy of the statement that the piece of equipment that comes nearest to being in universal use in modern hydrometallurgical and ore-dressing plants is the Dorr continuous thickener. The function of the device is to separate a thin mixture of liquid and solid particles into a thick pulp and a clear liquor. Another machine in wide use is the Dorr classifier, the purpose of which is to separate the coarse and fine particles in a pulp containing solids of various sizes. It is in recognition of the invention of these two devices and the vast amount of technical work in the successful application of them in the beneficiation of ores that the James Douglas Medal for 1930 has been awarded to John Van Nostrand Dorr. To gage the importance of the development of the thickener, particularly, it is only necessary to imagine the loss of time, capacity, and metallurgical efficiency that would result if all the Dorr tanks in the world were put out of operation for a day and replaced by the old methods of intermittent settling and decantation. Truly, the record is one of "distinguished achievement in non-ferrous metallurgy" that deservedly ranks the medalist with those who have preceded

A STUDY by J. R. Low, Jr.1 on the effect of quench aging on the Charpy-impact specimens of semikilled 1020 steel disclosed that a decrease in cooling rate from 1275°F raised the transition temperature. This was demonstrated in his investigation by controlling the cooling rate of impact specimens to duplicate that of a heavier plate and com- paring the properties with air-cooled specimens and quenched specimens. The transition temperature of the samples that had been cooled at a rate estimated to be similar to that of an air-cooled 3/4 in. plate was approximately 45ºF higher than the quenched samples. The transition temperature of the air-cooled series was between that of the slow-cooled and the quenched series. ALTHOUGH much effort has been devoted to the problem, the nature of plastic flow in bcc metals is still not fully understood. Some of the difficulties encountered stem from the scarcity of information on orientation effects and the uncertainty as to the glide system in these metals. In an attempt to provide some of this information, the present investigation was carried out, using zone-refined molybdenum single crystals deformed in tension and in direct shear. Considerable evidence exists to indicate that the primary slip system for molybdenum is (110) <111>.1,2 Figs. 1 and 2 indicate that this is, indeed, the case for direct shear at room temperature (see Ref. 3 for a description of the shear-testing equipment and procedure). Moreover, from Fig. 2, the shear stress on the (123) is lower than that on the (112). This would be the case if, as has been suggested,4,5 slip on these two planes is in reality com-

ABOUT three years ago eight standard steels were prepared for the cooperative investigation of methods for oxygen analysis, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and by the National Bureau of Standards. A preliminary report of the results was made at the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in February, 1936. ? This report showed the reliability of vacuum-fusion methods and further brought out certain advantages of the fractional vacuum-fusion method. The results obtained by the authors with the latter method will be discussed here, with some com-ments on the procedure for those who are interested in determinations of gases in steel. Some additional comments are offered on the use of the polarizing microscope for identifying the inclusions in the steel to check and amplify the findings of the fractional vacuum-fusion analysis. Subsidence is controlled by a complex com¬bination of mining and geologic factors. For example, a compilation of worldwide data shows that, as the percentage of shale in the overlying rock mass decreases and the amount of sandstone increases, the angle of draw (and the area affected by subsidence) decreases. Limestone in the over¬burden appears to cause a more than twofold decrease in the angle of draw compared to a like amount of sandstone. Increased amounts of sandstone were accompanied by a greater surface subsidence relative to the mining height. The total thickness of overburden did not appear to influence the subsidence magnitude above super-critical panels. The greater the thickness extracted, the smaller percentage of that thickness shows up at the surface as subsidence. The greater the percent of the seam extracted, the greater the subsidence reaching the surface. The maximum subsidence above room-and-pillar panels de¬pends on the pillar height and minimum width as well as the other factors listed.

In the summer of 1888 it was the fortune of the writer to present the subject of the desirability of establishing a set of samples of steel, which should be analyzed with extreme care, in order that they might become standards to which scientific and commercial analyses of iron and steel could be subsequently referred; also, that greater uniformity in the results of analyses might be brought about, since these standards would bear towards analytical methods somewhat the position which the original units of weight and length, the gramme and meter, or the pound and yard, preserved in Paris, London, and Washington, do to the mechanical arts. Discussion of the paper of B. H. Dunshee, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, August, 1913, pp. 1511 to 1531. GEORGE E. MOULTHROP, Butte, Mont.:-The recording for the first time by Mr. Dunshee, in a readily usable form, of the various systems of square-set framing applied in the Butte district is a valuable contribution to mining information. The many different methods of framing employed, due to the individual ideas of superintendents and foremen of segregated companies, have given full opportunity to determine the best framing for the conditions as found in these mines, and the final adoption of a system uniform for all the mines has come about through a study of these various methods and an experience covering a period of many years. The sawed 10 by 10 in. and 12 by 12 in. timbers undoubtedly give the best satisfaction; and the style of framing the sawed timber that under all conditions has given the best practical results is that used in the Anaconda group and other mines, described and recommended by Mr. Dunshee. In this framing the posts have a horn 2 in. high and 6 in. square, the cap end having dimensions of 3 by 6 in. Instead of the framed girt shown in the drawings of the Anaconda group, the 6 by 10 in. girt adopted at some other mines, which fits into the cap and post framing with no other preparation than cutting the timber to the necessary length, fills all the necessary requirements for strength and affects a material saving in timber and labor. This, as Mr. Dunshee states, is without doubt the type of framing which would be adopted as a standard for 10 by 10 in. sawed timbers if sawed timber sets were to be used in the future generally. But saw-timber for the mines was becoming scarce and expensive, and round timber for the square sets furnished an alternative which provided, at greatly reduced cost, material which in every way supplied the requirements of the mining conditions. The use of the round timber with a satisfactory framing makes available a conveniently located and large source of supply which up to this time has served no useful industrial purpose. Particularly is this true of small timber, which is still standing in great quantities in the forests where the trees more desirable for commercial purposes have already been cut and marketed.
