Twinned metal crystals are usually designated as either deformation twins or annealing twins. If twins are to be classified according to the treatment the metal has undergone just prior to the observation of the twins, there are two other possible groups: (1) solidification twins,† when observed in the as-solidified or as-cast condition, and (2) transformation twins,† when observed in a metal which has been cooled from above an allotropic transformation temperature. McKeehan has demonstrated that ferrite does, occasionally at least, contain twinned structures2. The twins, which he studied by optical methods, were obtained during the preparation of iron single crystals by very slow cooling through A3. He proved that the twin relation was actually that which previous investigators had predicted; namely, twinning along three planes of the form (112). Since McKeehan's discovery, little or no attention has been given to this transformation twinning of alpha iron, or to the possibility that it might occur at all speeds of cooling from above A3 instead of merely during the preparation of single crystals. McKeehan's twins were evidently regarded as interesting only in proving that a body-centered cubic metal could form twinned structures—at least under certain conditions. It is generally believed that iron seldom if ever forms annealing twins. Certainly the straight-line banding which is so abundant in annealed face-centered cubic metals is characteristically absent in iron annealed below A3. However, O'Neil13 has studied "twin-like" crystals in annealed alpha iron and concludes that the specimen he studied actually contailled a few annealing twins. Tamura4 as reported "twin-like" crystals both in wrought iron and mild steel; specimens of the latter were annealed above and below A3 and showed "twin-like" crystals after both kinds of treatments.

I. INTRODUCTION AT the time of the discovery of America the old world had a scant supply-of the precious metals. Both the northern and the southern part of the new continent proved wonderfully rich in gold and silver and its treasures were eagerly looted; though the looting has lasted four centuries, the nines of its mountain chains are far from being exhausted. Even the later discoveries in Australasia and eastern Siberia could not rob the Western Hemisphere of its position as the greatest gold and silver producing region of the world, though finally the developments in a narrow and circumscribed area in South Africa wrested from the Americas their supremacy in the production of gold. Nevertheless the history of the two parts of the great western continent has been strikingly different. At first the Spaniards extracted vast treasures of silver from Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia, while Colombia and some placer deposits in Peru yielded a smaller quantity of gold. A couple of centuries later, a stream of gold began to flow from Brazil, the silver production from the countries mentioned above continuing strong in the meanwhile. Later on, the yield of South America diminished, but to offset this there began a wonderful series of discoveries in North America. The gold fields of California astonished the world; and when the cream of these had been skimmed off there began a no less amazing development of the Central Cordilleran gold and silver districts, which soon wade the United States the greatest producer of the precious metals. Aided by ever improving technique, extensive exploration, and a system of railroads, the yield was maintained and increased. Still later followed the discoveries of the gold fields of the arctic region and silenced those who had maintained that the zenith in gold production had passed. For many years, coal has been known to exist in the valley of the Sabinas river, in the State of Coahuila, and for about 15 years it has been worked by the Mexican International Railway Co., which opened mines for its own fuel-supply when the railway was built, and has been mining continuously ever since. The coal-basin worked by this company lies along the Sabinas river, principally on the SW. side. It covers a wide area and has been carefully prospected, but only in a few parts have the beds been found sufficiently thick and regular for economical operation. This Sabinas basin was considered the only one in this field, until, in the Spring of 1899, the Las Esperanzas basin was found by Messrs. J. L. Elliot and E. D. Peters, who were in Mexico looking after some copper-properties. After a further examination by Mr. James T. Gardiner, of New York, the Mexican Coal & Coke Co. was organized in June, and active work was begun on Nov. 5, 1899. The coal-field of Las Esperanzas, situated in the State of Coahuila, about 85 miles SW. of Eagle Pass, Texas, adjoins and runs parallel with the Sabinas basin—an anticlinal separating the two outcrops by about 2 miles. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of a part of the basin. The coal-formation is in the Upper Cretaceous, and corresponds with the Laramie measures of the United States. In presenting this brief historical perspective, it is not my purpose to address myself to the geophysicists, to most of whom the story is already well known. My objective is to draw the attention of those who hold the belief that geophysics is something new, typically twentieth century, to the fact that fundamentally, whether it was known by the name of geophysics or not, the science is an ancient and an honorable one. It began many centuries ago, and our modern civilization and its commerce owe a great debt to its founders, who today are likely to be overlooked and their names forgotten. The word "geophysics" means the physics of the earth, and is descriptive of a science that in many ways bears the same relationship to geology that astrophysics does to astronomy. When dealing with distant stars or deeply buried rocks, the experimenter cannot reach them to obtain samples, which can be taken to his laboratory for study. He therefore exhibits the resourcefulness of Mahomet in the mountain episode, and makes the terrestrial globe or the cosmic universe his laboratory, studying the effects of distant bodies on certain "fields of force" which come to him across interstellar space, or through the rocks that make our earth. The application of these- techniques of the physics laboratory to the study of the stars is the science of astrophysics, and to the investigation of the earth is geophysics. Yet the origin of the most valuable contribution to the world's trade and commerce ever made by geophysics remains lost in deep obscurity. Unknown even is the country wherein lived the unsung genius who invented the first geophysical instrument, the mariner's compass! Worse yet, it is not certain whether this invaluable guide of man had its beginnings in Europe or in Asia. A Chinese legend tells of the Emperor Hwang-ti, who attacked his enemy Tchi-yeou on the plains of Tehou-lou in the year 2634 B.C., whereupon the latter magically raised such a fog that the Emperor could not pursue the retreating troops. No outstanding example of an important producing unit operation exists in California today where the competitive drilling drainage feature is or was entirely eliminated We need not feel, however, that the thought of unit operation had its birth in 1924, when Henry L. Doherty named and sponsored it so strongly before the American Petroleum Institute and our own organization. No man or company in California ever drilled a wildcat well without exerting every possible effort to get all of the structure, so as to control drilling and avoid competition. Overproduction did not begin in 1923, so there has always been the wish to avoid it. In this state the practice of selling acreage around a wildcat has not been followed, except possibly in rare instances. The operator drilling the wildcat knew he must pay the bill alone, so he endeavored to get the benefit of his effort by tying up all of the land around his well and by so planning his different lease obligations as to avoid as much offsetting as possible. If he failed to get all of the land, it was because someone's price was too high, some other oil man also had the same idea and already held some lands, a competitor took leases away from him while his work was still incomplete, or (as was so often the case) the hidden structure when developed did not prove to be where the wildcatter thought it would be. The last named condition often led to a forced drilling campaign by the last leases secured and thus to serious drilling drainage problems. Ownership of the Land The land situation differs a great deal in various parts of the state. In the San Joaquin Valley, all the land is surveyed into sections and townships. Railroad land grants embraced a part of the land. In the areas that were developed at an early date, as at Kern River, Coalinga, McKittrick and the Sunset-Midway field, such land as the railroad company's diligent land department had been unable to sell for a song as grazing land still remained in its ownership. The Bassick mine, located six miles east of Silver Cliff, Colorado, has, ever since its discovery, been noted for peculiar features. Some of these characteristics exist in one or two other mines, while some are entirely unique. Among these peculiarities I have selected the most noticeable for treatment in this paper: First. The methods of deposition of the ores, which is not, as in ordinary veins, in strata or layers parallel to the walls of the fissure. The ores are arranged in concentric layers upon detached and abraded fragments of the walls; each ore in a separate stratum, and always in the same place in the series. Second. The characteristics of the fissure or opening; its shape and dimensions; its contents, or the vein-filling; and its verticality. Third. The peculiar products of the mine. The most noticeable of these products is charcoal, which is occasionally, and at long intervals, found throughout the ore-body, and in the surrounding conglomerate, from the surface down to the present depth, which is something over eight hundred feet. The existence of charcoal here is, as far as I know, the only instance of its discovery in mines of metallic ores. Fourth. Besides the charcoal, there are other products, in themselves not peculiar, whose manner of arrangement and composition are unusual. The mine is situated near the centre of a small rounded hill of eruptive trachytic rock and feldspathic conglomerate. The diameter of the base of this hill varies from 700 to 1200 feet, and its height is 200 feet above the general level. A cliff or outcrop of fine conglomerate is exposed on the southwest side of the hill. On the northeast it joins by an upward slope the fine-grained, hardened feldspathic paste of Mount Tyndall, which rises 600 feet higher, and of which the elevation containing the Bassick mine thus forms an arm. On visiting the mine, one's attention, whether he is a scientist or not, is immediately attracted by the unusual method of arrangement of the ore. Today, a dozen or more universities and colleges in the United States are offering curricula designed for the specialized training of engineering students who plan to enter the petroleum industry. Many hundreds of students are following these curricula in their academic preparation, with the expectation that by so doing they will be better equipped to enter the petroleum industry in an engineering capacity than their competitors that seek to do likewise with training of less specialized character. Those who have helped plan and develop these curricula believe that such specialization should and does afford the student a superior preparation for his task. Others have questioned this and urge a broad preparation in fundamentals without specialization. Still others are suggesting even greater specialization than present petroleum engineering curricula afford. Some would have the student first prepare himself in one of the more general divisions of engineering, such as civil, mechanical or electrical engineering, and then seek some degree of specialized preparation in a graduate program. Which of these views is correct; or, if there is merit in each, which plan offers the greater advantage to the student? It is time that we paused to take stock of our objectives and of our way of attaining them. Is the training received by our petroleum engineering students what it should be? To what extent is the product of our petroleum engineering schools meeting the requirements of the industry? How may graduates be better equipped for the work they are called upon to do? These are questions that educators interested in the training of petroleum engineering students are ever asking. They must depend upon engineers and executives engaged directly in the industry for advice and helpful suggestions in better planning the training to be offered to our future engineers. This paper will have served its purpose if it is successful in focusing attention of men active in the industry on some of these educational problems, to the end that the ideas of men close to the needs of the industry may be made known to those who have responsibility in the control of our educational programs.

THE Institute of Mining Engineers has shown so much interest in the educational problem of profitably combining theory and practice, that it seems especially appropriate to lay before its members the methods and aims of the mining laboratory of which I have charge, and in which one form of combination of hand with head work is now being tried. If anything may be contributed toward the solution of this problem by the discussion which follows, my purpose mill be attained. Whether it was wise or not to establish a mining school so far from the principal mining centres, does not now enter into the question. Given, a mining school already begun, how shall it be made most efficient in developing engineers who are trained to think for themselves as well as versed in the works of others ? This is the question with which we have had to deal. In considering the bearing of this laboratory work upon the students' preparation, it will be convenient to take it up under five different heads: 1. The methods and aims of the laboratory. 2. The advantage to students of having a part, at least, of their practical work in the curriculum of their school. 3. The advantage to be derived by mine; and works. 4. Degree of accuracy which may be attained in working ores on a small scale. 5. Reslts of work in the laboratory. 1. The Methods and Aims of the Laboratory.—During the May meeting of 1873, held in Boston, I had the privilege of reading before you a paper stating the plan; and aims of this laboratory. Since that time me have been constantly following out those plans, and are more than ever convineed that me are working in the right direction. We do not feel that the time we have spent has been in any sense thrown away. Perhaps the aims of the laboratory can be most clearly shown by illustration. Many young engineers have school thinking that they know everything. They go to the works, and expect to teach the superintendent something and the men a good deal, regardless of the fact that it is this spirit that has prejudiced workmen against schoolmen. Discussion of the paper of WALDEMAR LINDGREN and CLYDE P. Ross, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 106, October, 1915, pp. 2171 to 2190. WALDEMAR LINDGREN, Boston, Mass.-I happened to go down to Cuba rather unexpectedly in the winter of 1914, and spent a few very interesting days at Daiquiri and Mayari. To C. F. Rand and his associates I am greatly indebted for permission to visit the mines and for many courtesies received. A few months after that, I met Professor Kemp who informed me that he had just returned from a geological study of Daiquiri. We talked over what to do in a case like that. We both liked to publish our opinions, and so finally agreed to write two papers entirely separately, I not knowing any of Professor Kemp's conclusions,1 and vice versa. We were rather interested in seeing what would happen. Of course, as might be expected, we disagreed on some points; not, of course, that we ordinarily disagree, but simply because when two men work in the same field and with different ideas, probably they are apt to vary slightly in their conclusions. Some years ago A. C. Spencer went down there for the military interim government and published the results of his study. His view of the origin of the deposit differed from that of Professor Kemp and from mine. So here are three different results obtained by three different geologists. Such differences in opinion on obscure subjects sometimes tend to bring geology into disrepute. It is perhaps not surprising that different opinions have been expressed, for this occurrence of iron ore is one of the most difficult to explain that I have ever seen. MAX ROESLER, Great Neck, L. I.-I had the opportunity this summer of spending about two months down at the Juragua deposits, and studied them with the idea of writing a paper on them, which I hope will come out later. The interpretation of the occurrence at Ocania Mine is the thing which particularly struck me, in the last paper. At the Ocania Mine we may have these large blocks of limestone which have been utterly and entirely altered, to a remarkable extent.

A PROCESS that has come to be known locally as "multistage stabiliza-tion" has been developed in the Haft Kel field of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. in southwest Iran, for the recovery of casinghead gasoline. It con-sists in releasing the dissolved gases from the crude by stages, a practice common in many fields, but which, so far as is known, has nowhere been carried to the extent to which it is employed in Iran. It has been in use there for nearly nine years, during which time some 200 million barrels of crude have been handled by the process. This process of gasoline retention consists in preventing the greater part of the casinghead gasoline hydrocarbons (the butanes and pentanes) from ever leaving the crude, instead of allowing them to be vaporized and then recovered from the lighter gases by the usual compression or absorption processes. Its efficiency is fully equal to that obtained by the absorption process; its disadvantage is that it increases the quantities of ethane and propane in the crude sent to the refinery, but with the growing demand for propane this drawback is vanishing. When casinghead gasoline is recovered as a separate liquid in the Iranian fields, it is blended with the crude, as the only outlet is through the refinery, and the crude-oil pipe line offers the cheapest means of transportation. It is under these conditions that the retention of the butanes and pentanes in the crude by multistage stabilization is a most attractive process, possessing as it does the following advantages: (1) extreme simplicity, (2) low first cost, (3) easy installation, (4) practically 100 per cent operating-time efficiency, (5) no operators required, (6) no water or other services required, (7) negligible maintenance, (8) once established, very little routine testing is necessary. The one essential for reasonably efficient multistage stabilization is that the flowing pressures of the wells should be relatively high; i.e., they should not be less than about one-third the saturation pressure of the crude in the reservoir. This is a very general statement, of course, and much depends on the type of crude and its temperature.

FROM beginning to end, the processes of coal stripping are of great interest. From the time the prospector enters upon the property to examine it and to prove it, until the coal is loaded into railroad cars, every step must be taken with careful thought and planning. In proving the merits of a prospective property, an examination and computation of the overburden is of almost equal importance to the determination of the extent and quality of the coal bed itself. Is the overburden hard, and will it require drilling and shooting? How many yards of it will have to be handled to produce a ton of coal? Will it remain in place when .put in the spoil bank, or will it spread and run back into the pit? Are the drainage problems serious, and what will it cost to handle the water? Does the coal have bad dips, and what will be the grades and curvatures for haulage? These are a few of the physical problems that confront the prospector, and they can be ascertained only by adequate and careful drilling and engineering of the property to be considered. The engineer is an ever-present necessity, not only in the prospecting but in the daily operation of the property after it has' been approved and developed. The first step in operation after the location of the tipple is the contouring of the surface to be stripped and the laying out of the pits for operation, having in view again adequate room for spoil, drainage, haulage and other problems. If the overburden is hard, as much of it is in the larger stripping areas, it must be drilled for shooting with churn or well drills, the holes continuing from the surface down to or near the coal bed. The location of these holes should be made, and marked with stakes, by the engineer, acting in conjunction with the shooting foreman. The usual practice is to drill holes 6 in. in diameter, although the present tendency is to increase the diameter of these holes so that they will hold, without springing, a larger charge of explosive. With the use of the old method of shooting, the holes were sprung or chambered several times with charges of dynamite, and in the cavity thus made, the explosive was placed, largely at the bottom of the hole; but with the use of liquid oxygen as an explosive, and with the later

Undisturbed sampling of shale has always been difficult. As pert of a comprehensive subsurface investigation for a nuclear power plant in northwestern Illinois, the Maquoketa shale, which contains seams of argillaceous dolomite, was sampled using different coring techniques. Since the Maquoketa shale is extremely fissile, careful sampling preservation by both lateral and vertical confining was utilized. The samples were tested to determine both static and dynamic properties. A relationship between void ratio and compression index, swell index, and swell pressure ratio was established. Correlation was found between the dynamic properties and both undrained shear strength and confining stress. Based on the results of the sampling and testing programs, recommendations for sampling and sample preservation techniques are given. INTRODUCTION Undisturbed sampling and preservation of samples of weathered, fiasile shale is often a very difficult task. The often erratically varying degree of weathering with depth complicates sampling and makes reproducibility of testing results difficult. Therefore, the testing of weak, weathered rock very often yields a wide variety of test results with large data scatter. The reproducibility of teat results usually associated with water-deposited soils is seldom, if ever, obtained. The testing and sampling program described in this paper was part of a comprehensive subsurface investigation for a nuclear power plant in northwestern Illinois. The sampling, preservation and testing program of shale samples taken from the Maquoketa shale are described, and, in particular, the different sampling techniques and sample preservation procedures are evaluated with respect to their effectiveness. The samples obtained by these procedures were subjected to a comprehensive testing program, including both static and dynamic testing in order to provide input for soil-structure interaction analysis. GEOLOGY The Maquoketa Shale Group is of Ordovician age and is part of the Cincinnatian Series. The area where the shale samples were taken was in a broad sea far from sources of clastic sediments during most of Ordovician time. However, during Cincinnatian time when large deltas in the Appalachian region were being formed, clastic sediments from the east dominated the sedimentation ii. Illinois, resulting in formation of the shale and dolomite shales of the Maquoketa Shale Group (Willman et al., 1975). The geologic unit sampled consists of a greenish gray to gray silty shale containing numerous 1- to 12-inch (2.5- to 30.5-cm) thick interbeds of argillaceous dolomite. INTRODUCTION Requirements for achieving economic slope stability in open pit mining must not only be met during the operating stages but in all preceding stages of mine development. In many operating mines little or no emphasis was ever placed on evaluating the stability of possible slopes during the exploration and planning stages. The purpose of this discussion is to emphasize the necessary considerations that should be made in all stages of development in order to achieve the safest and most economic pit slopes. The most economic slopes may not always be the safest slopes and it is incumbent upon the mine operators and engineers to achieve an optimal combination of economics and safety. The stability requirements outlined are based on the profit motive and are, therefore, practically oriented. Long-term basic research or theoretical studies are considered important only to the extent that they can be shown to have a definite payoff. Consideration will first be given to the information required for stability analysis, which can be determined during the exploration and evaluation stage, followed by further stability work necessary during the mine planning and layout stage. Particular emphasis is then placed on the operating stage in which blasting, dewatering, artificial stabilization, and slope failure are discussed. Lastly, the importance of a logical and orderly research procedure is stressed. EXPLORATION AND EVALUATION STAGE The purpose of the exploration and evaluation stage in the mining scheme is to find and delineate a potential orebody. Discovery and delineation commonly involve drilling tens and in many cases hundreds of boreholes. These boreholes, which may cost as much as $20.00 per foot of depth for a cored hole, are usually abandoned once drilling is completed. Stability evaluation for a potential open pit should begin at this stage by taking advantage of the existing boreholes. Rock and soil properties, as well as hydrologic parameters, may be obtained from both the borehole and the core. Seismic velocity and neutron probes may be used to log the borehole to obtain elastic moduli data. A borehole dilation jack may also be used to give backup information on the rock and soil elastic parameters. THE intense chemical weathering of geological materials in the tropical regions has produced soils that are very rich in their content of iron and aluminum oxides. These soils are commonly referred to as laterites. There is considerable confusion as to the definition of a laterite, since there are workers who consider it to be entirely a ferruginous horizon and others who insist that laterite must have a high content of free aluminum oxide. How¬ever, in general the former is the accepted definition. The indurated ferruginous clay was given the name "laterite" by Buchanan,' not because of its bricklike appearance but rather because bricks were cut from it and used as a building material. Many of the temples of India and Siam are built of this material. This term has come to mean to the geologist a material that includes hard masses of concretionary, cellular, pisolitic ironstones. The soil scientists have deviated from the original meaning of the word and their writings show very little respect for Buchanan's definition or an understanding of the ma¬terial described by him. Pendleton," a life-long student of tropical soils, has insisted that the term laterite be restricted to Buchanan's definition; namely, an alluvial horizon, largely of iron oxides, with a slaglike, cellular or pisolitic structure, and of such a degree of hardness that it may be quarried out and used for building construction. More recently DuPreez2 and Sherman" have eliminated from Buchanan's definition the requirement of a hardness for building construction purposes. In doing this they eliminate the lithological implications in favor of a description of a product, soil, which originates and is developed by pedogenic processes. The confusion of the definition of a laterite is made greater by workers who insist that it must contain bauxite of different degrees of purity. Many of the tropical soils are rich in aluminum oxides. It is natural for the workers who have studied these tropical soils to emphasize the importance of the hydrated aluminum oxides. Hollands reported that the alumina in a laterite existed as bauxite. Fermor3 insisted that a laterite must have a high content of aluminum oxide hydrate, and Fox,4 in 1923, made the suggestion that if a laterite contained enough hydrated aluminum oxide to be used as an aluminum

IN common with others, the zinc industry found itself after the war largely over-capitalized, a condi-tion which still exists notwithstanding that Tri-State production has doubled since prewar days. This is partly due to the abnormal war demands and partly because of the war impetus given to research, a stim-ulus that because of its success has persisted (and probably will persist) constantly since then. Improved practice and metallurgy resulting from research are today responsible for an increased pro-duction in the Tri-State district of 15 per cent over the practice of five years ago, and the giant strides in this respect in the western states together with the more moderate advance in the Tri-State district has thrown out of equilibrium the more or less balanced production of before the war and production has con-sequently gained on consumption, a condition resulting in rapidly narrowing profits in the Tri-State field, where the present average cost is actually greater than the price received for our product. Despite this condition, no thinking person will de-plore the cause or means used to achieve a greater production and, as this progress is merely the economic application of intelligent thought, it follows that equal effort and thought may be expected to produce the remedy. It has been suggested that the practical application of research has resulted in less need for man-power and consequently in the lessening of employment to common labor and to engineers. I cannot think that such is the case although personally I have received more ap-plications for employment during the last two years than ever before. But when one considers the strides production of all commodities has taken, it is difficult to reconcile this immense development with the possible increase in pop-ulation especially in view of our stringent immigration laws. Whether or not improved industrial methods are responsible for the lessening of employment the ques-tion as to the wisdom of such improvement is hardly debatable. While the Tri-State district of Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri continues to be the leading factor in the zinc¬mining industry, gradually lowering prices during 1925 and 1926 and a. decided drop during 1927, have de-creased its production almost 20 per cent, this tonnage having largely been replaced by western concentrates.

Robert T. Walker and Woodville J. Walker (Walker Engineering Corp., Salt Lake City)—Mr. Kinkel's article embodies, in condensed form, the results of the first detailed and complete geological survey that has ever been made of the long neglected but potentially very important West Shasta Copper-Zinc district, in Shasta County, California. In view of the difficulties of the terrain and the complexity of the geological structure, this represents a notable achievement, and it is with regret, therefore, that the writers find it necessary to differ from Mr. Kinkel's conclusions on two important points. The first has to do with the interpretation of two members of the stratigraphic column of formations in the district; for purposes of comparison, the description of these two members according to Mr. Kinkel is shown parallel to the description of these members according to the writers, see Fig. 14, Mr. Kinkel's nomenclature being used. The first member, which Mr. Kinkel terms the upper unit of the Balaklala rhyolite, consists of a single, massive, homogenous body of very silicious igneous rock, consisting almost wholly of quartz and albite, and averaging about 80 pct silica. Most geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey who have previously inspected the district have called it an alaskite. It is not a pile of several members, but is a single unit, without internal subdivisions. It has the form of a recumbent lens, approximately flat on the bottom and arched on top, several miles in diameter, and attaining a maximum thickness of 1000 to 1200 ft. It varies in texture from porphyritic to holocrystalline, and contains unusually large quartz phenocrysts up to 4 mm diam. Mr. Kinkel considers this formation to be a thick lava flow that is older than the overlying Kennett shale, while the writers interpret it as being intrusive, constituting a domed sill or laccolith that is younger than the Kennett shale. Their reasons are as follows: 1) This formation shows none of the features which within the writers' experience invariably accompany very silicious lava flows. Nowhere is it vesicular; nowhere does it contain any glass or its devitrified equivalent; nowhere does it contain flow breccia; and nowhere has it a ragged top, in spite of the fact that there is no evidence of surface erosion, which might have removed such a top.

There is an ever-increasing demand for furnaces with controlled atmosphere, due to the large quantities of steel being used in the automotive industry, such as the high-chromium stainless irons, the 18 Cr, 8 Ni stainless iron and low-carbon steel sheets. The difficulties involved in the annealing of such materials, if they are to be kept absolutely free from oxidation, are many. It is possible to bright-anneal these steels in small laboratory hydrogen furnaces, using specially purified hydrogen and taking some additional precautions. In the first place, the insulation, usually of alumina or magnesia, holds small amounts of water vapor, which it is almost impossible to remove completely. Secondly, there is always condensataion of water vapor in the cooling chambers of such furnaces, and with the continuous circulation of the hydrogen gas in the furnace, the water vapor is carried from the cooling chamber back into the heating chamber. This water vapor oxidizes the charge. Lastly, the supply of moisture is made sure by the diffusion of small amounts of air from the atmosphere into the furnace against the pressure of the hydrogen. The oxygen combines with the hydrogen and forms more water. Under such conditions there is little gained by using specially purified gas, because it becomes contaminated after reaching the furnace. Low-carbon Steel If a sheet of low-carbon steel is annealed in such a furnace at 750" C. and allowed to cool with the furnace, an adequate flow of purified hydrogen being maintained all of the time, the steel will come out with a very thin coating of blue oxide. If a similar sheet is annealed at the same temperature and quickly pushed into the cooling chamber, it will come out nearly bright, or perhaps with only the edges slightly discolored. It is difficult to get a piece of steel through a furnace of this type with an absolutely bright surface. This is due to the fact that there are always traces of oxygen or water vapor in the furnace. When the steel is allowed to cool with the furnace, it reaches a critical temperature where the affinity of iron for oxygen is greater than that of hydrogen for oxygen, and the steel comes out discolored. Rapid advances in any branch of science often follow the development of new instruments or techniques which permit the scientist a closer look at the material in which he is interested. With the development of the polariz¬ing microscope, modern petrology was born. The resolving power of the microscope, however, was not great enough to enable the geologist to dis¬tinguish or identify the material now known to be minerals which constitute the bulk of the rocks known as "clays" and laterites. The discovery of X-rays and the development of powder X-ray diffrac¬tion techniques provided the extra resolving power necessary to get "a closer look" at the minerals in the clays and laterites. These techniques are largely responsible for the great strides made in the past two decades in the identification of the clay, sesquioxide and hydroxide minerals. To obtain an X-ray diffraction. pattern of a mineral or rock is relatively a simple procedure, but to interpret this pattern in terms of crystal structure or min¬eral identity is quite another matter. It has taken the combined talents of physicists, physical and colloid chemists, mineralogists, and geologists to unravel the identity of some of the minerals in these complex rocks and, as this symposium will indicate, many more problems remain to be solved. To assist in the identification of these minerals, we have the ever-useful microscope, which, is supplemented by the development, only in the last ten years, of differential thermal techniques and the powerful and costly "eye" that enables us to see the shapes and sizes of extremely small particles -the electron microscope. To this array of equipment must be added such gadgets as supercentrifuges, spectrographs, and the apparatus necessary for chemical analytical work. Obviously, not only is it difficult for any one man to master all of the techniques to the point where he can do competent re¬search, but also few institutions are able to provide the high capital outlay for purchase and maintenance of suitable equipment. Here we clearly see that if this equipment is to help us solve our many problems, a close co¬operation of specialists from various institutions and industry is essential. This, however, is less than half the problem. If the geologist is going to learn to intelligently find, and the industrialist to intelligently and eco¬nomically exploit the materials that constitute a large part of the mineral wealth upon which our way of life is based, we must get a better insight into
