THIS paper is based upon 12 years' experience in the Southwest, including three years that were spent in constant traveling as examining engineer for the Phelps-Dodge Corporation. The material was gathered during rather extensive work in Bisbee, Clifton-Morenci, Globe, and Tombstone, and also on short and rapid trips into most of the mining camps and prospect fields of New Mexico, Arizona, the desert country of California, and as much of Sonora as was safe at the time. My methods of observation and my deductions are not put forward as new or scientific; they are simply rough field methods, based upon short notes, rough sketches, and largely upon memory, which I have found useful for coordinating geological data for the purpose of passing quick judgment on mining possibilities in certain districts exhibiting uniform characteristics. The opportunities for observation have been better these last few years than ever before, clue to the unprecedented activity in mining, which has caused the reopening of hundreds of old mines and the starting of even more numerous prospects all over the mining States. POSSIBLE SYSTEMS OF CLASSIFICATION By Geological Provinces There are a number of well defined geological provinces in the territory under discussion, and a study of their individual features is of interest. The following are a few of those that axe most striking in their uniformity. 1. The "Desert province," extending roughly from. Wickenburg, Ariz., to and beyond Barstow, Cal. In its north-south extent it reaches up to the Colorado River and clown into Sonora, but overlaps other provinces. It is characterized by a worn-down basement of schistose and granitic rocks, on which rest remnants of Paleozoic and pre-Paleozoic sediments, including very old limestones. The sediments are disrupted and contorted. Alteration in the mineralized areas is very prominent, especially in the schists and limestones. Cenozoic volcanic rocks, principally of semi-basic composition, have been intruded into this complex and sometimes cover it as lava flows.

One of the most unexpected and unusual mining disasters which have ever been recorded in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, or, in fact, in any coal-mining district, occurred in the northern anthracite field near Nanticoke, Luzerne County, about 10 o'clock on Friday morning, December 18, 1885. This accident caused the death of twenty-six persons, a larger number than had perished in any catastrophe in the anthracite mines since that which occurred at the West Pittston mine in 1871. The Nanticoke disaster resulted from a " cave-in " in the roof of a portion of the Ross coal-bed workings from Slope No. 1 of the Susquehanna Coal Company, by which a large body of quicksand, gravel, rock- and coal-boulders, and water broke through the roof of the mine, filling up a large extent of the workings, until not only the water, but also the rock material, flowed out at the mouth of the mine. Immediately over the point where the "cave-in" occurred, was located a large pile of refuse coal and slate, taken from Slope No. a. After the occurrence of the accident, I made a very careful examination of the ground in the vicinity of the "cave-in," in conjunction with a study of all the maps, sections and other mining data in the possession of the Susquehanna Coal Company, which were placed at my disposal by Manager Irving A. Stearns. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, was compiled from the Company's map, and from special maps made by the Geological Survey under the direction of my assistant, Mr. Frank A. Hill. This map shows the relative position of the mine-workings, the surface features and the "cave-in," and other points to be specially referred to hereafter. TROUGHS or launders are probably the oldest machines used for ore. concentration, and their development was suggested no doubt by the natural segregation and stratification of materials that take place in the bed of a stream. Trough washers for coal cleaning were first used in France and Germany about one hundred years ago and have been used in some form or other ever since. The early launders were intermittent or batch machines, and only comparatively recent developments have made them continuous. The chief disadvantage of early launder systems as applied to coal has been that when a satisfactorily clean: coal was produced the loss of good coal in the refuse was excessive. Other disadvantages have been the large quantities of water and the great lengths of troughs necessary to treat moderate tonnages of feed. One of the most widely used types of trough washers is the Rheolaveur, which has been developed in the last 25 years. Fig. 1 shows a more or less standard arrangement for fine coal. In this there are four troughs placed one below the other and sloped a few degrees from the horizontal. Rheo-boxes or draws are provided at intervals in the bottom of the trough for the removal of material deposited from the stream. These draws are spaced substantial distances apart. Some of the rheo-boxes are provided with upward currents of water to modify the horizontal current stratifica-tion. In operation it is the function of the first two troughs to remove all refuse material and permit only clean coal to be discharged over the end. In order to accomplish this, large quantities of coal are drawn through the rheo-boxes. The third and. fourth troughs are used to recover the coal discharged through the boxes of the first two troughs as a middling product and to discharge a clean refuse. The middlings are returned to the first launder and are usually about equal to 40 per cent of the raw coal being fed to the launder.

The bituminous coal industry faces a real problem, if it desires to retain the position in the power-generation field to which it is economically entitled. More power is probably produced today for electrical energy, for steam-driven and steam-heating industries and processes, for transportation by rail, water, highway and air, collectively, than ever before, and yet the total bituminous coal production has decreased about 38 per cent, from 575,000,000 tons in 1926 to 357,500,000 tons in 1934. It is not the intention of the writer to recommend coal as a fuel for automobiles and airplanes, but rather to point to these forms of transportation as being responsible in a very measurable degree for reducing the coal consumed by railroads. Petroleum products may still further reduce consumption of locomotive fuel through the extension of the use of Diesel-driven trains. Oil-burning steam-driven locomotivcs are replacing coal in some places, where railroads operating high-speed passenger trains are willing, temporarily at least, to pay a premium for the fuel that is low in ash and produces less smoke and practically no cinders. In the navy and ocean-going passenger ships, oil is so firmly established, and has such definite advantages over coal as formerly fired, in steaming radius, in ease of bunkering, cleanliness, and reduction in firing labor, that very outstanding developments in the handling and burning of coal will be rcquired in order to replace oil. For freighters on the Great Lakes, coal is the logical fuel, but there is great and immediate need of radical improvements in its use, else that market also may be lessened. It is not within the scope of this paper to discuss in detail bituminous coal for either locomotive or marine use, but, rather, generation of power in stationary plants, consisting of electrical generating stations and that very large group of miscellaneous industrial plants, such as paper, rubber, textile, steel and other industries that use electrical, mechanical, and steam power, derived from either hydro or some form of fuel.

The definite trend to stricter specifications with respect to hydraulic concrete has become increasingly manifest in the last six years or so; but it remained for the vast reclamation projects of the Bureau of Reclamation of the Department of the Interior of the last few years to focus attention on this trend, and to demonstrate how thousands of tons of concrete-making aggregates can be produced continuously and automatically with a control of fineness comparable with that obtained with small samples in well equipped private and governmental laboratories. Pioneer work in this direction was done, to be sure, by private companies, notably the Kaiser Paving Co. of San Francisco, prior to the present vast public works program. Then in 1931 came the first great aggregates-preparation plant of the Six Companies, Inc. to supply construction materials for Boulder Darn1 in Nevada, and now, in 1936, the aggregates plant of the Mason-Walsh-Atkinson-Kier Co., general contractors on the Grand Coulee darn in Washington. At Boulder dam and to an even greater degree at Grand Coulee dam, sand production is recognized as probably the most important single element affecting the physical characteristics of the concrete. For in the construction of dams accurate grading of the fine aggregate has considerable bearing on the attainment of a uniform and homogeneous concrete of a high degree of workability and placeability and, at the same time, combining high density and low cement content. Low cement content is of value not only from the standpoint of ceonomy but also because the use of an unnecessarily rich concrete causes certain undesirable characteristics to develop. This paper will relate how at Grand Coulee dam methods that are more advanced than ever before are producing four sizes of gravel and a sand having a fineness modulus of 2.5-3.0. A glance into the immediate future of the refining industry, and a retrospective view of 1929, cannot fail to emphasize the need for effective measures of control of refinery still runs. With oil producers alert to the need for control of the crude supply, it has become more than ever necessary for refiners to complete the movement toward stabilization by concerted determination to maintain still run schedules within the limitations prescribed by the demand for gasoline. The outlook for continued growth in the demand for gasoline appears to be well sustained by a preliminary survey of requirements for 1930. In fact, it is apparent that the industry will be assured of a market for gasoline that will aggregate in volume at least 472,000,000 bbl. this year. This indicates a gain in total demand over 1929 of about 9 per cent. or about 4.6 per cent, less than the gain recorded during 1929 over 1928, which amounted to 13.6 per cent. Despite the indicated increase in gasoline demand this year, it is apparent that little, if any, more crude will be required than last year. This is shown in Table 1, presenting estimates of gasoline demand and probable crude requirements for 1930. HAVING promised you to write concerning the nature of ores in particular, I must tell you some general facts, especially those concerning the places, kinds, and manner of their existence as well as the tools which are used. However, you must know that according to good investigators these ores are found in many parts of the world. They show themselves almost like the veins of blood in the bodies of animals, or the branches of trees spread out in different directions. Indeed, careful investigators of minerals, wishing to show by analogy how ores are located in mountains, have drawn a large tree with many branches, planted in the middle of the base of a mountain. From its principal trunk extend various branches, some thick, some slender, exactly like real trees in mature forests. They think that these grow and enlarge continually and draw themselves toward the sky, ever converting into their own nature the most disposed adjacent materials so that finally the tips arrive at the summit of the mountain and emerge with clear sign, sending forth, in place of leaves and blossoms, blue or green fumosities,* marcasites with small veins of heavy mineral, or other composition of tinctures. From these things, when they are found, it is possible to make certain inference that such a mountain contains ores, and as the signs are more or less, so are the minerals plentiful and rich or poor. For this reason the prospectors for these things take heart according to the manifestations that they find, and with hope and certainty of profit they take all possible pains to mine with skill and expense those things that the signs have indicated. Often there are ores of such a kind and quality that they raise a man in wealth to the skies. [Secretary's Note.—At the Spokane meeting of the Institute, in discussion of President Brunton's address on "Modern Progress in Mining and Metallurgy in the Western United States," and at the request of members present, Mr. Ayres gave an oral account of his new separator, which is here published as an independent paper, partly because of its inherent importance and partly because it describes an improvement which did not originate in the Western United States, and therefore does not fall, strictly speaking, under the title of President Urunton's address.—R. W. R.] A brief history of the growth of the anthracite-coal preparation will give a better view-point from which to judge the present problem of separating slate from coal. At the beginning of the commercial value of anthracite, 70 years ago, only the pure portions, or " splits," of the veins were mined and shipped to market, and without any preparation or screening other than the selection, while loading, of the glassy lumps, and the rejection of the fine material and the slate that had strayed accidentally into the coal. The next step was the crushing or breaking of the coal (hence the name "breaker" as applied to the preparation-building), and the sizing of it by means of bars or revolving screens. This stage of its development marked the advent of the " breaker-boy " as a slate-picker, with his ever-increasing capriciousness. As the richer veins or a splits " became exhausted and the market demanded a still greater output, the less-pure " splits " and the thinner veins were utilized to produce the coal. Carrying as they do a far greater percentage of impurities, particularly when removing the pillars, it became necessary to build new and better equipped preparation-plants. Finally, we are now at the highest stage of complicatioii yet known to the art of coal-preparation. Dimension stone is considered by many the premium material for beauty and durability in institutional and monumental construction. Nonetheless in the United States it commands an ever decreasing share of the total market. At the beginning of the century dimension stone accounted for more than half the stone produced in the United States, but by 1974 it accounted for little more than 0.2% and the number of producing quarries and finishing plants had greatly reduced. This decrease in use is accounted for in part by competition from cheaper materials, but another factor seems to be the demand by many designers for uniformity and exact repetition of modular units in construction. Even where stone is used in large buildings modem architects want blandness of pattern and uniformity of color in the stone. Because most natural stone contains variations in color and pattern great strain is put on the quarriers to overcome this and produce a uniform product. This results in increased costs, increased waste at the quarries, and consequently increased price in the market. In spite of this, stone is still looked on as the most prestigious of building materials and its aesthetic appeal is born out by the many simulated stone patterns found in synthetic materials. End Use and Specifications The principal uses of dimension stone are in building construction and monuments. Other uses include flagging, curbing, paving, mill-stock slate, roofing slate, laboratory furniture, and refractory brick. Because many of these uses overlap, an orderly classification of dimension stone uses is most difficult. Various classifications have been used by Cumer (1960), Barton (1968), the U.S. Bureau of Mines yearbooks, and the Building Stone Institute (Anon., 1972).

A method using computer techniques is described for the comparative evaluation of truck performance over any given haul road using readily obtainable manufacturers' data. An additional computer program is utilized to calculate individual cycle times for each truck and shovel combination, fleet requirements for any desired production rate, and to estimate comparative costs. The introduction of a large number of variables into the program permits management to determine the critical system factors having the greatest bearing on costs. Thus, the method described can be used not only for analysis of needs for a new surface mine but for cost improvement in existing mines where changes in truck and shovel operations are contemplated. The systems analysis approach to the solution of problems in the mining industry is gaining in industry acceptance. This is a logical development in view of the fact that a mine constitutes one of the most dynamic systems of production. In contrast with a manufacturing plant, situated in a location selected through choice and utilizing a regulated source of quality controlled raw materials, the miner must go where the ore is and he is faced with ever changing physical conditions. He is subjected to the vagaries of nature, and he can never mine the same ore twice. What is systems engineering? There seems to be no concise and universally accepted definition of the term and its meaning is still fairly local. It deals largely with trade-offs of subsystem characteristics to achieve some desired result in an overall system. This concept of suboptimization can be explained by an example. If the objective of a mining company is to produce a certain quality ore at minimum cost, the optimum operation is not achieved by minimizing all costs, since all phases of mining are interrelated. Reduction of blasting costs might well increase loading, hauling, and crushing costs out of proportion to the resulting saving in explosives. Hence tradeoffs are necessary. It is evident then that an optimum system is achieved through a blending of suboptimal components which taken together yield the desired result. DURING the past 10 years, the safe and efficient lighting of the coal mines of this country has received an ever-increasing amount of attention. Several States have passed laws attempting to regulate the type of lamp to be used and the nature of the fuel to be burned, and the mining departments of coal-mining States have generally shown a keen and intelligent interest in this subject. The passage of the recent Employers' Liability Act in Pennsylvania has made it necessary for many coal-mining companies to take out liability insurance, and the companies underwriting such insurance have made it desirable for the insured to permit the use of, none but illuminants of established worth. While these conditions have not obtained for a sufficient length of time to permit the statement that the illumination of coal mines by portable lamps has been standardized, still, considerable progress has been made and the direction of future practice in this branch of coal-mining technology is very evident. Under these conditions it seemed that a review of the methods now used in coal-mine illumination, together, with a brief consideration of the principles underlying these methods, might be of some interest. Miners' lamps may be divided into three classes: The open light, the electric cap lamp and the flame safety lamp. It will be desirable to consider each of these classes separately, as each has properties peculiar to itself and one class is hardly comparable with another. In this country, without question, the open light is the most generally used of all miners' lamps. This fact is explained by the relative freedom of a large proportion of our mines from gaseous conditions, and by the admirable systems of ventilation installed in those that show a tendency toward such conditions. In the metal relines, the miner's candle has had and still has considerable vogue. Because of the small amount of ventilation usually supplied in metal mines, the freedom of the candle from any tendency to produce noxious gases or offensive odors, and the small amount of air it consumes, are. valuable assets, while, because

The year 1936 in West Virginia was characterized by increased activity in natural gas. The number of actual completions was only slightly increased but many more wells were drilling than at the end of 1935 and there was almost feverish activity in taking new leases. This pronounced revival is partly due to the fact that the extremely cold winter of 1935-1936 showed that additional supplies of gas would be desirable and partly to the hope of finding new pools in the deeper sands. No new pools have actually been found, but the Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) development of Kanawha County, which was already assured by the end of 1935, was greatly extended into wider and richer territory. The Middle Devonian shale (Childres sand), reached incidentally by Oriskany exploration as well as by direct design, has been productive of gas in much wider areas of Boone, Lincoln, Putnam and Kanawha Counties than heretofore known. Routine drilling to the upper sands in dehed territory, also, was greatly increased, although not yet much reflected in completions. Thc supply of marketable gas, however, has been substantially enlarged. In preparation for further exploration there has been an extensive leasing campaign throughout the entire territory where gas seems at all probable, or ever possible. Exact figures are lacking, but new leases have certainly been taken on more than 1,000,000 arres. One operator estimates that 500,000 acres have been leased in the Appalachian geosyncline alone between Parkersburg and Charleston. Exploration, both for shallow and deep-sand gas, on some of these new leases is now under way. There was little activity in oil. No special search for new pools was made and none was found, but the usual routine drilling in old pools occurred. One major gas pipe-line enterprise was undertaken and completed. Operating technology was much the same as usual. In certain localities repressuring for oil has become a matter of routine, and in others the use of acid in treating small wells in calcareous beds has been continued. IN 1697 King William the Third granted unto his well-beloved subject Adolph Philipse, a certain tract of land, now known as Putnam County, N. Y. At the death of Adolph Philipse the land descended by inheritance to his nephew, Frederick Philipse. In 1751 his surviving three children partitioned the surface into nine parcels and divided them equally amongst themselves, but reserved the mineral rights which they held in common. Thus, at this early period in the history of the colonies, the existence of valuable deposits of iron-ores in Putnam County seems to have been a matter of common knowledge. Yet it is only within the last five years that the county has become a prominent, producer of iron-ore. Desultory mining had been carried on before that period at the Sump, Croft, arid Tilly Foster mines, but only a limited output was achieved, and few of our iron-masters suspected the existence of an abundance of good ores only forty miles from New York harbor. The accompanying map shows the location of those deposits of ore which are now generally known, and have been worked to considerable extent. Without doubt there are many more still awaiting the miner's pick, for no systematic exploration has ever been attempted within the borders of the county. Geologically, the occurrence of the ore is a counterpart of that of the New Jersey and Lake Champlain magnetites. The countryrock, and even the physical geography, are identical. Many small lakes dot the surface of the county. It is from these and their tributary springs and streams that the metropolis derives its farfamed Croton water. Abrupt hills divide the lakes and ponds. Some of the lakes, notably Lake Mahopac, are on the crest of hills, and are fed by subterraneous springs. The prominent mines of the county, in the order of their productiveness, are the Tilly Foster, Mahopac, Croton Magnetic, Sump, Croft, and Island mines. Of these, the first two are at present the only producers, and are quite exceptional in their nature. In fact they are the only ones of their kind in the Appalachian range, if not in the world.

In many oil fields a great variation in the production of adjoining wells has long been observed, and a certain proportion of dry holes, situated between prolific producers, has been regarded as normal without thorough investigation as to cause. Similarly, an occasional prolific producer has been found in a part of a field where all other holes have proven disappointing. Adjoining wells which showed an unreasonable difference in production have been surveyed, and the bottom of the poorest producer has been found to have lost sufficient vertical depth, through its drift, to diminish seriously its penetration in the oil zone. Again, the bottom of the good producer has been found to he more favorably situated by its migration up structure. Surveying of wells in California fields has shown many instances where the dry hole has drifted far off the structure to such a degree that no amount of deepening could ever convert it into an oil well. In other cases, edge wells have been found to drift into the field. At this time, in California, the surveying of oil wells is beginning to he accepted as a routine part of operating procedure. Some operators are surveying all of their new wells and, in some of the recently discovered fields, this practice is providing invaluable assistance in methodical development. The information that has been obtained from the surveying of many wells has convinced most operators that it pays to give careful attention to the drilling of wells. Chews are now usually cautioned to avoid reckless competition with each other. Whereas, formerly, certain companies demanded a large footage from their drillers, they now issue orders that a very moderate speed in drilling shall he maintained and that every care be taken to avoid practices likely to cause excessive deviation of the hole frorn vertical. As a result of these new instructions to drilling crews, a distinct decline in the average drift of the wells drilled by these operators has taken place and fewer dry holes are being drilled from good locations. The gas-lift, or circulation of gas for the production of crude oil, now includes the gas operator in field production activities to a greater extent than ever before. It is the purpose of this paper to show the scope of his activities and to discuss the various means of handling and treating the large quantities of gas which are now of a somewhat different nature than formerly. The extent of the stripping action of circulating gas on oil must be discussed, as this can be governed somewhat by the method of treatment of the recirculated gas. Change in Gas-decline Curve under Circulation Before the advent of the gas-lift, the gas-production curve of a field showed a peak during the flush production with a rapid decline as the wells were put on the pump and then a long steady decline curve of a relatively small volume of rich gas for the life of the field. Under the gas-lift method of production, instead of having the sharp decline at the end of the flush production period, sufficient circulating gas to keep up the required total gas-oil ratio would be turned to the wells. The gas-production curve then assumes a long gradual decline, giving a large volume of gas for treatment for several years to come. The gas-decline curve will not follow that of the oil, as the lowering of the rock pressure by the steady production of oil and gas from the sand will make it necessary to continue using the large tubing and to circulate large volumes of gas in order to keep the back-pressure against the sands as low as possible. THE method of making oxide of zinc direct from the ore was invented and developed at the works of The New Jersey Zinc Co. at Newark in the middle of the last century. The process was invented by Burrows, who had not the ability, financial or technical, to work out the details necessary to make it of commercial value. This was done by Col. Wetherill, whose name is commonly attached to this process. The, grate bars used are also frequently called Wetherill grates, which is a misnomer because they were in common use for boiler firing at the time and he never claimed their invention. The invention of the process was due to the efforts of The New Jersey Zinc Co. to find a profitable means of working the ores from Franklin and Sterling Hill, N. J. These are a mixture of franklinite, willemite and zincite, containing about 20 per cent. of zinc. The first attempts were to make spelter, which were not successful, owing to the low grade of the ore and the fusibility of the residue. Failing in this, the next attempt was to make oxide in large muffles and reverberatory furnaces. This succeeded, although the cost of operation was high, the recovery low, and the quality of the product uncertain. In 1855, the new process was patented and has been in successful operation ever since. Essentially, the process is to spread a mixture of coal and ore on a body of burning coal on a perforated grate and blow an excess of air through the grate. The zinc is reduced in contact with the coal, volatilizes and burned by the excess of air in the upper part off the furnace and in the flues. It is then carried to the hag rooms by the excess air and products of combustion which are forced through the flues by fans. In its main features, the process is the same today as at the time of its invention, but the details have been so modified that it would hardly be recognized by its originators.

Advance in the art of slag control has been very rapid in the past few years. The viscosimeter method for slag-reaction rate and composition, together with the phosphorus and other methods mentioned by Dr. Herty, allow the steelmaker to rectify and control the slag in the finish period of the heat with much greater precision that ever before. However, the steelmaker's problem is more complex, and in order to make steel of proper analysis in the most economical manner the constitution of the initial slag that has formed immediately after the lime is up in the furnace is of prime importance, as it is one of the factors that determine the carbon content of the charge as melted. Many heats melt with high carbon and some with carbon much lower than is expected so that, on the average, increased furnace time is necessary before reaching the finishing period. The problem, therefore, is to so regulate the slag-making additions that a suitable initial slag will be formed at once. Where all cold metal charges are involved, particularly where the iron and scrap are selected, this may be done with a fair degree of regularity. This regularity results not only in better conditions at the beginning of the heat and during the carbon drop, but also the need for smaller slag-modifying additions toward the end of the heat. The above has been well demonstrated by the work reported by Reagan in the past few years. Where large amounts of cold pig or hot metal are used, the problem becomes more involved. It is much more difficult for the steelmaker to be sure that for any given furnace the heat will form the desired initial slag. Observations of many heats indicate that the pig iron is a dominating factor in the constitution of the slag formed. The scrap is also a factor but in general could be roughly classified and a correction made therefor. The necessity, therefore, arises for a method of correlating the pig-iron charge and type of slag formed for any particular furnace, which resolves itself into a measure of those qualities of the pig iron which affect the slag. It has been repeatedly questioned whether estimates of oil reserves are of any practical value, as the greater number of such calculations previously made have subsequently been proved to be grossly inaccurate. But even admitting partial justification for such statements, it must be evident that some idea, however approximate, of the available reserves of essential minerals—petroleum included—is of vital importance in mapping their development and the future trend of the related industries, particularly if it is kept constantly in mind that these estimates are not only never intended as a final word but must continually be subject to revision in accordance with the changes in their component factors. The value of these estimates, therefore, hinges on the clear understanding of what is meant by reserves and that the figures can only apply within the limited time when the controlling factors remain unchanged. It should be understood, further, that while estimates of possible and probable oil deposits are as a rule but idle conjectures, appraisals of proven oil reserves can undoubtedly be made with an ever-increasing degree of accuracy. And it is with this in mind that in the present study the endeavor has been to estimate only the world's proven oil reserves and to leave out of consideration the questionable volume of the probable and possible oil reserves. Such a survey presupposes further a clear distinction between the known amount of oil underground in proven fields at any one time, and the proven reserves: the portion that can be economically brought to the surface and made available for utilization. Only a fraction of the petroleum stored underground in proven fields— usually associated with natural gas—is or can be economically brought to the surface, and not all of the oik brought to the surface is economically utilized; also, although practically all the natural gas can be economically recovered and utilized, in actual practice a large part of the total volume that reaches the mouth of the well is wantonly blown into the air and wasted. It is thus estimated that in the United States only some 25 per cent of the petroleum stored underground in proven fields is actually brought to the surface; and in actual practice close to 25 per cent of the total gas produced is now absolutely wasted. Sodium sulfite as a zinc retarding agent in the selective Hotation of complex lead-zinc sulfide ores was discovered by the writer in the summer of 1919 in the testing laboratory of the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co.'s gravity concentrator at Midvalc. Utah. It proved to be the first reagent to give consistently good results in the laboratory on the cornpanj's Bingham ore. In December, 1919, C. A Lemke, concentrator superintendent, recommended that a flotation unit be added to the existing gravity mill to handle the mill slimes, using sodium sulfite as the zinc depressant Owing to the poor lead and zinc markets and the unfavorable royalty schedules offered by the Minerals Separation Co., the project fell through at this time. In 1921, a number of laboratory tests were made at Midvale. on other ores, among them ore from the Sunnyside mine at Eureka, Chlo. Both sodium and calcium sulfites were used with succcss on this ore. Early in 1923, further tests were made at Eureka, shortly after the Sunnyside company had resumed operations after a two-year shutdown. AS a consequence sodium sulfite was given a trial in the mill. The results showcd sufficient improvement over previous work as to warrant continuous use of this reagent in the lead circuit Exeept for a week or so in 1926 and for several weeks in April, 1927, when sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate were given trial runs in this mill. sodium sulfite has been used ever sinee.. Sodium sulfite was chosen rather than the calcim sulfite brcauscl of its gre1ater sollubility, making it possitdr. to introduee the reagent as a solutiun.
