COROMANT is the trade name of the alloy-steel drill rod tipped with a chisel-type tungsten-carbide bit manufactured by Sandvik Steel Works Co., Ltd. Other names, such as Swedish or air-leg method of drilling, are used in various localities. Coromant drilling in Sweden was the natural sequence of the adaptation of tungsten-carbide inserts to the already established routine of drilling. By the middle thirties the percussion drill had reached practically its highest attainable efficiency as a drilling machine. Since then improvement has been in metallurgy of component parts to increase life or lessen weight, in the development of pneumatic and automatic feeds, in the use of jumbos to more quickly and easily handle machines, and in changes in drill rods and bits. By 1937, drilling in the United States and Canada was done by relatively heavy mounted drifters with positive hand or automatic feeds. In Sweden, on the other hand, emphasis had been placed on light equipment and drifting was done with pneumatic bars and reverse-feed stopers. In 1938, one of the most prominent American drill manufacturers developed an air-leg for successfully drilling the extremely variable but relatively soft iron ores of some of the northern Michigan mines. Also in 1938, a comparative Swedish test, also in soft iron ore, of a 50-lb jackhammer mounted on an air-leg, against a 100-lb reverse-feed drifter on a pneumatic bar, showed the net drilling time was increased by the air-leg set-up from 51 to 71 pct, in drilling 6-ft rounds in a 6 1/2x6 1/2 ft drift. Miners were becoming scarce in Sweden even at that time and, since the lighter equipment made the work easier and more attractive, the airleg was then made use of in some types of soft rock. In 1940, for instance, a large tunnel for a hydroelectric plant was driven with this equipment. By 1943, when tungsten-carbide inserts came into the picture in Sweden, a great many of the kinks in percussion drilling with this hard-metal had been worked out in Germany under the stress of war conditions. However, only 10 pct of the drilling machines manufactured in Sweden were jackhammers for use on air-legs and only the one manufacturer made air-legs in the United States. American practice had largely supplanted integral forging of drill bits by the detachable steel bit. A new process for extracting uranium from ores with carbonate solutions is described. Leaching is carried out under oxygen pressure to ensure that all the uranium is converted to the soluble hexavalent state. By this method), alkaline leaching can be used successfully to treat a greater variety of ores, including pitchblende ores, than has been possible in the past. The advantages of carbonate leaching over conventional acid leaching processes are enhanced further by a new method which has been developed for recovering uranium from basic leach solutions. This is achieved by reducing the uranium to the tetravalent state with hydrogen in the presence of a suitable catalyst. A high grade uranium oxide product is precipitated directly from the leach solutions. Vanadium oxide also can be precipitated by this method. The chemistry of the leaching and precipitation reactions are discussed, and laboratory results are presented which illustrate the applicability of the process and describe the variables affecting leaching and precipitation rates, recoveries, and reagent consumption. THE extractive metallurgy of uranium is influenced by a number of special considerations which generally do not arise in connection with the treatment of the more common base metal ores. Perhaps foremost among these is the very low uranium content of most of the ores which are encountered today, usually only a few tenths of one percent. A further difficulty is presented by the fact that the uranium often occurs in such a form that it cannot be concentrated efficiently by gravity or flotation methods. In these and other important respects, there is evident some degree of parallelism between the extractive metallurgy of uranium and that of gold and, as in the latter case, it has generally been found that uranium ores can best be treated directly by selective leaching methods. It is readily evident that this parallel does not extend to the chemical properties of the two metals. Unlike gold, which is easily reduced to metallic form, uranium is highly reactive. It tends to occur as oxides, silicates, or salts. Two ores are of predominant importance as commercial sources of this metal: pitchblende which contains uranium as the oxide, U3O51 and carnotite in which the uranium is present as a complex salt with vanadium, K2O-2UCV3V2O5-3H2O. These ores may vary widely in respect to the nature of their gangue constituents. Some are largely siliceous in composition, while others consist mainly of calcite. Sometimes substantial amounts of pyrite or of organic materials are present and these may lead to specific problems in treating the ore. Further complications may be introduced by the presence of other metal values such as gold, copper, cobalt, or vanadium whose re- covery has to be considered along with that of the uranium, or whose separation from uranium presents particular difficulty. In general, there are two main processes for recovering uranium in common use today.'.2 One of these employs an acid solution such as dilute sulphuric acid to extract the uranium from the ore. A suitable oxidizing agent such as MnO, or NaNO, is sometimes added if the uranium in the ore is in a partially reduced state. The uranium dissolves as a uranyl sulphate salt and can be precipitated subsequently by neutralization or other suitable treatment of the solution. The second process employs an alkaline leaching solution, usually containing sodium carbonate. The uranium, which must be in the hexavalent state, is dissolved as a complex uranyl tricarbonate salt, and then is precipitated either by neutralizing the solution with acid or by adding an excess of sodium hydroxide. The latter method has the advantage of permitting the solutions to be recycled, since the carbonate is not destroyed. This is essential if the process is to be economical, particularly with low grade ores. With each of these processes, there are associated a number of advantages and disadvantages and the choice between using acid or carbonate leaching is generally determined by the nature of the ore to be treated. In the past, more ores appear to have been amenable to acid leaching than to carbonate leaching and the former process correspondingly has found wider application. With most ores, acid leaching has been found to operate fairly efficiently and to yield high recoveries. One of the main disadvantages has been that large amounts of impurities, such as iron and aluminum, sometimes are taken into solution along with the uranium. This may give rise to a high reagent consumption and to difficulties in separating a pure uranium product. Excessive reagent consumption in the acid leach process also may result

ATTEMPTING to review the fundamental aspects of segregation in steel ingots of all types in a paper of reasonable length, we encounter two difficulties: (I) the fact that a large number of different physical and chemical effects are involved, and (2) rather incomplete and confusing evidence on certain aspects of detail and mechanism in the freezing process in which the segregation effect is involved. The best solution seemed to be to link together most of the underlying factors into a simplified theoretical picture that appears to the writer to explain most of the observed data, in the hope that this will serve as a reasonably good target for discussion and criticism. Segregation effects, especially in steel ingots or castings, are often divided into " microscopic " and " macroscopic," depending on whether the variations in concentration of solutes? or dissolved elements in the iron occur as: (I) a periodic variation over the small distances between the nuclei and the surfaces of the primary grains, or (2) as a larger scale effect involving concentration gradients over distances of the order of several inches, more or less. The reason for this somewhat artificial division is, of course, that it is only the macroscopic scale effect that has much practical importance. About the only effect of practical importance that results from microscopic segregation is the banded structure often left in rolled sections, and even this is relatively harmless in most cases. However, the causes of microscopic segregation also underly the larger scale effect, so we must first consider matters such as the formation and growth of crystal nuclei, selective freezing and diffusion, and others that are fundamental to all segregation effects. UNDERCOOLING AND NUCLEI FORMATION It is probable that although the degree of undercooling is small in iron, as in metals in general, a certain amount of it takes place, and also that the number of crystal nuclei increases very rapidly with increased undercooling below the liquidus tempera¬ture. In practical terms this means that the nuclei number increases very rapidly with increased cooling or freezing rate, thus being dependent on the rate of heat flow out from the zone of crystallization. TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS AND HEAT DISSIPATION DURING FREEZING Each pound of steel evolves about 100 B.t.u. when freezing. In addition to this, the temperature gradient in the solidified portion (required to dissipate the heat as freezing progresses into the axis) necessitates a loss of heat required to cool the solid metal below its freezing range, which is equivalent to an amount of not so much less in magnitude. In a 5-ton ingot, the total would include about one million B.t.u. for freezing alone and about 0.4 to 0.5 million B.t.u. for the gradient, up to the end of the freezing period: Thus the rate of freezing depends primarily on the rate of heat dissipation. IT IS usually assumed that chemical specifications are sufficient for steel to be used for case carburizing, and if the steel analyzes within the ordinary limits specified for steel for this purpose, no difficulty traceable to the steel used should be encountered in obtaining satisfactory results in the case carburizing and hardening. Much work has been done to determine the effect of various alloying elements on the rate of carbon penetration, etc. but, to our knowledge, little if anything has been published in regard to the effect of the quality of the steel on the final results in the hardening of case-carburized steel parts. The writers believe that the structure of the case both before and after quenching is greatly affected by the actual condition of the steel itself as made, and that for good results in the case-carburizing and hardening departments, the steel should be of the best possible quality as regards non-metallic impurities. It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the presence of excess dissolved oxides in the steel, as made in the melting furnace, affects permanently the results obtained in carburizing and hardening and that it is possible that the presence of dissolved oxide can result in total unfitness of low-carbon steel for, case hardening purposes. When races and rolls for roller bearings are made from a low-carbon steel, case carburized and hardened, it is of primary importance that the results of this treatment be of the highest quality. It is necessary, therefore, that in the case-carburizing work each detail be rigorously checked to avoid any defects which would cause the loss of much time and material. The case carburizing with which this paper deals was done in under-fired oil furnaces. The temperature of each furnace is controlled by means of a platinum platinum-rhodium thermocouple, in connection with a potentiometer indicator and potentiometer recorder. The temperature of each furnace is registered every 15 min. by an operator, who is continually checked by the automatic recorders.

With the recent advances which have been made in science and technology and the increased use of mathematics in this area, the question of the best mathematics courses for a mining engineer to take is of major importance. The question becomes even more difficult to answer due to the recent increase in the number of different mathematics courses in the last two decades offered by the mathematics departments. Therefore, the National Study of Mathematics Requirements for Scientists and Engineers (NSMRSE) was designed to provide some answers to these questions. Approximately 10,000 scientists and engineers were selected for the Study, These individuals were placed in two categories: (1) The Awards Group, recipients of national honors or awards and those recommended by the members of the Board of Advisors as having national and international reputations in their areas of specialization and (2) The Abstracts Group, persons exceptionally productive in their research, based on the number of journal articles listed in the last five years in the Engineering Index, Scientific and Technological Aerospace Reports, Chemical Abstracts, Biological Abstracts, and the Physics Abstracts. The NSMRSE Course Recommendation Form and the Instruction and Course Content Sheet were constructed with the aid of the Board of Advisors and other consultants. For the Study, 40 courses were selected by the mathematical consultants. In order to make sure that the basic content of the mathematics courses was the same for all respondents, a brief resume of each of the 40 courses was given. The NSMRSE Course Recommendation Form consisted of seven sections. These sections were as follows: Section 1, 38 different specializations; Section 2, orientation of work (applied through theoretical); Section 3, highest degree obtained; Section 4, place of employment (academic, nonacademic); Section 5, administrative capacity (administrative or nonadministrative); Section 6, age groups (five-year intervals). Section 7 contained the 40 courses which were to be marked according to five categories: (1) Course Length, 3 to 36 weeks; (2) Applied-Theoretical Orientation, a five-point scale; (3) Course Level, freshman through graduate; (4) Knowledge of Course; and (5) Use of Course Content in Work. The Analysis The report of the data is based on the replies received from 44 mining engineers. This group was part of the Awards and Abstracts Group for all engineers. The resume of the recommended courses is reported in quintiles (upper fifth to lower fifth), since recommendations of this kind are not precise. The results of the Study are based on recommendations of the most active research men in engineering in the U.S. today; therefore, the reader should realize that these course recommendations represent an upper bound of mathematics requirements for the Ph.D. in both undergraduate and graduate work. Conclusions and Recommendations 1) Mining engineering students who plan to be active research specialists should take all those courses which are "very highly recommended" (80-10070) and "highly recommended" (60-79.9%). Those courses in the upper two quintiles and recommended by most mining engineers are: first-year calculus, third-semester calculus, elementary differential equations, applied statistics, and machine computation. Courses of "moderate recommendation" (40-59.9%) are: vectors, intermediate ordinary differential equations, the first course in partial differential equations, elementary probability, and linear programming. 2) The great majority of mining engineers indicated that they prefer a course which is concerned primarily with applications. Only the standard courses such as first-year college mathematics, calculus, differential equations, and advanced calculus received a recommendation for 50% theory and 50% practice. Therefore, all mathematics courses given to mining engineers should contain many applications and little theory. Engineers in both the applied and the combination (ap-plied-theoretical) groups indicated a definite need for applications in all courses. 3) In general, recommendations were for mathematics courses to be given for short intervals of time such as 3, 6, or 12 weeks. Only the standard courses mentioned previously received the usual one-semester or one-year recommendation. Therefore, it is of value to combine several related courses into a one or two-semester course so that the mining engineering student could acquire important mathematical knowledge at an early date in order to prepare him for his research. 4) There was little use for the newer courses in modern mathematics such as the functional analysis sequence, the modern algebra sequence, and the group theory sequence. In addition, there were uniformly very low recommendations (0-19.9%) for multilinear algebra, complex variables, mathematical logic, special functions, integral equations, approximation theory, analytic mechanics, integral transforms, and geometric algebra. Therefore, these courses should be given a low priority. 5a) Comparisons among mining engineers with different backgrounds showed that the combination ap-plied-theoretical group recommended more mathematics than the applied group. 5b) There was little difference in recommendations between the administrative group and the nonadminis-trative group. 5c) Analysis of age groups showed that those in the lower age groups gave significantly higher recommendations to courses such as the first course in partial dif-

A technique for collecting and analyzing the small quantities of gases desorbed on heating metal powders has been developed. The gases collected from copper powders of various types of manufacture have been analyzed and found to contain H2O, CO2, and SO2. The quantities of gas evolved vary from 0.05 to 1.0 milliliter, under standard con-ditons of temperature and pressure, per gram of powder. The source of the gas has been traced to surface films on the powder. IN the powder-metal industry it is recognized that the presence of gases in the powders affects the processing and resulting properties of the sintered product. Several sources for these gases are possible; namely, chemical reactions with the sintering atmospheres, inclusion. of gases during compacting, dissolved gases in the metal powder, and sorbed gases on the metal-,powder surfaces.1, 2, 3 Since the quantities of the gases are relatively small, no direct attempt has been made to collect and analyze them nor to isolate their source. The work that has been done has been concerned with the dimensional stability of the product., its porosity, density, or mechanical and physical properties. Conclusions are drawn on the basis of studies of this type as to the probable effect of gases on these properties. 4, 5, 0 In the present investigation an attempt has been made to obtain quantitative data on the analysis and quantities of gases associated with copper powders manufactured in different ways. Apparatus was constructed to collect gases evolved from loosely packed powder samples on heating to various temperatures under a reduced pressure of helium. The powders were outgassed thoroughly in a vacuum prior to starting the collection operation in order to eliminate mechanically entrapped gases and to prevent the possible reaction of the powder with these gases. Experimental Procedures Materials—The major portion of the investigation was carried out on a single heat of water-atomized, oxygen-free, high-conductivity copper. A relatively coarse fraction of this powder, 20 to 100 mesh, was tested as a mixed powder and as various graded size fractions. The Mogollon mining district, New Mexico, has received little public attention, although for 15 years it has been the leading silver producer of the state; it is situated in a region remote from the principal lines of travel, and its activities have usually been limited to the operations of two or three companies. The value of the total production of the district in the 44 years of its history has been estimated at $15,000,000. For the years 1904 to 1917, inclusive, the output was: gold, $4,370,000; silver, 10,042,000 oz.; copper, 874,862 lb.; total value, approximately $10,500,000. In 1913 the district contributed 80 per cent. of the total silver production of New Mexico, but in 1917 only 41 per cent., due to serious interruption in the operations of the leading producer. Since 1914 the silver output has diminished one-half, and the present high value of silver is nearly offset by the increase in cost of production. The output of gold has rarely exceeded 35 per cent. of the total for New Mexico. The ratio of silver to gold, by weight, has averaged 46:1 based on the whole output of the district. Location and Topography The town of Mogollon is 75 mi. (121 km.) by a poorly located highway ,. from the nearest railroad terminals, at Silver City and Tyrone. All supplies are transported by motor trucks and teams. The area, sometimes called the Cooney Mining District, lies on the western flank of the Mogollon Mountains, which occupy the western part of Socorro County. The elevations drop steeply on the west to the valley of the San Francisco River, adjacent to the Arizona boundary. The topography is very rugged, the whole area being sharply dissected; deep canyons with steep gradients and rugged walls are characteristic of the whole western slope of the Mogollon Range. The main canyons i run east and west, and usually maintain a flow of water during the entire year. As would be expected in a region of such deep dissection, the mines are generally dry. The mountain ridges between the canyons have altitudes varying from 7000 to 10,000 ft. (2130 to 3050 m.) and drop sharply, on their western face, to the floor of the San Francisco Valley at an elevation of 5000 ft. (1525 m.). Erosion has been rapid, and the

Metallurgists have long believed that martensite in steel forms as plates along the octahedral {111} planes of austenite. Much has been written about mechanisms whereby units of the austenite lattice are pictured as transforming to martensite by shearing movements initiated along the octahedral planes of austenite, supposedly resulting in plates of martensite lying parallel to these planes of shear. A critical inspection of two or three photomicrographs of quenched hypereutectoid steel led us to the conclusion that the orientation habit of martensite, at least in hypereutectoid austenite, could not possibly be octahedral. Inasmuch as recent studies,30,31 of the martensite-type reaction in nonferrous alloy systems have established the irrational orientation habit as characteristic of this type of lattice transformation, the need for a thorough restudy of the crystallography of martensite formation in steel was evident. The present paper reports the results of such a study, extended to include both cementite and some of the products of constant-temperature decomposition of austenite. Also reported are a few of the results obtained from a microscopic and X-ray study of the austempering process in very high-carbon steel. I. Epitaxial growth of GaAs 1-xPx on germanium substrates was achieved using an open tube vapor transport system. The compositional range of 0.3 < x < 0.4 was examined. The best results were obtained with (311) orientation of the germanium substrate. The physical and chemical properties of the resulting layers were investigated using several techniques. Spectrographic analyses of the layers indicate substantial incorporation of germanium into the GaAs t-X Px layer. Evidence is presented which indicates that this incorporation occurs via a vapor phase transport process rather than by solid phase dijfu-sion. Electrical measurements suggest that the germanium thus incorporated behaves predominantly as a deep donor in the compositional range of 0.33 < x * 0.40 and has a deleterious effect upon the luminescent properties of GaAs1-x Px. The increasing technological importance of GaAs1-xPx for use in light-emitting devices has led to an evaluation of several aspects of existing growth processes. The method most commonly used to prepare GaAs1-xPx for electroluminescent device applications is vapor phase epitaxial growth on GaAs substrates.&apos;-4 In a typical electroluminescent diode structure the active region of the diode is entirely within the epitaxial layer and thus the electrical properties of the substrate are relatively unimportant since it is effectively a simple series resistance (assuming hetero-junction effects to be negligible). The use of germanium rather than GaAs as the substrate material is of interest for several reasons. First, GaAs of reasonable structural quality has been epitaxially grown on germanium4-2 and it is reasonable to expect that GaAs1-xPx could subsequently be deposited on the GaAs layer. Second, germanium substrates are readily available with both lower dislocation densities and larger areas than GaAs. Finally, single crystals of germanium are more economical than GaAs single crystals. The principal objective of the present investigation was to test the feasibility of growing GaAs1-xPx epi-taxially on germanium substrates, and to evaluate the properties of such layers with regard to electroluminescent device requirements. The approach used was to a) demonstrate epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx on germanium, and b) characterize the relevant structural, electrical, and optical properties of the GaAs1-xPx layers. The possibility of germanium incorporation into the grown layers was of special interest since there was some indication of this in previous studies of GaAs growth on germanium.5&apos;11,12 Although a study of the electrical properties of germanium in GaAs1-xPx was not an intent of this investigation, several features of the electrical properties of the layers grown in the present study which appear to be due to germanium are described. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The open-tube vapor transport system used for the epitaxial growth of GaAs1-xPx is illustrated in Fig. 1. This system utilizes the GaC1-GaC13 transport reaction and is similar in most respects to the larger system described elsewhere.&apos; The germanium substrates were n-type, with a resistivity of 40 ohm-cm (Eagle-Picher Co.). These were cut to the orientations of {100), {111), and (3111, and were mechanically polished and chemically etched in CP-4 (5 min at 0°C) prior to growth. In some cases, a GaAs substrate was employed in addition to the germanium. The orientation of the latter was {loo}, and they were also mechanically polished and chemically etched prior to growth. The initial composition of the deposited layer was pure GaAs. After approximately 10 microns of GaAs was deposited on the germanium substrate, the phosphorus content of the layer was gradually increased over a distance of approximately 15 microns to the desired concentration and maintained at this value throughout the remainder of the growth. Typical operating parameters used during growth are given in Table I. Selenium was used as a n-type dopant in several runs to facilitate comparison of the electrical properties of the layers grown on germanium with those of layers grown on GaAs substrates, which are usually doped with selenium. The concentration of H2Se in the gas phase was adjusted to a value which would normally yield a carrier density of 1 to 5 x 101 7 at room temperature in layers grown on GaAs substrates. The terminal surfaces of the epitaxial layers were examined by optical microscopy for structural characteristics. Laue back-reflection photographs (Cu radi-ation) were also made on the terminal surface to verify the epitaxial nature of the deposit. After these steps

This paper describes the results of a visit to the Santa Elena Peninsula, Ecuador, in January and February, 1921. On account of the complicated folding and faulting of the rocks and the peculiar occurrence of petroleum, field work was possible on only a few of the many geological problems and the results here published are only a contribution to the solution of the general problem. We know of nothing published on the geology of the district, except one account, in Spanish and German, by Theodor Wolf. The chief town, Santa Elena, is about 75 miles west of Guayaquil, the main seaport of Ecuador. The nearest developed oil field is the Zorritos of northern Peru, 120 miles south across the Gulf of Guayaquil. If newspaper reports are true, viz. that the Anglo-Ecuadorian Oilfields, Ltd., has recently brought in a 700-bbl. well on the coast of the peninsula near Ancon, the district may become important in the production of petroleum. At the time of our visit, the best way to reach the peninsula was by a steamer of the Pacific Steam Navigation Go., southward from Panama and northward from Guayaquil. About once a week, one of these steamers anchored 1/2 mile off shore near the village of Salinas, an important cable station. An alternative route, in the dry season, is by automobile from Guayaquil. In February, 1921, a railway bed had been graded part way between Guayaquil and Salinas, but this was detcriorating rapidly because of lack of funds to continue construction or to keep in repair that portion already completed.

OF THE many categories into which scientific knowledge has been arbitrarily divided, the one which has proved most applicable in our attempts to gain an insight into the details of steelmaking processes is physical chemistry. To the young metallurgist who has only recently survived a college course in this subject, the application of its principles to reactions in liquid steel should not be difficult. To one who has had no such course or whose auld acquaintance with the subject has all but been forgot, such application is all too often thwarted by the abstruse presentations of the subject found in many of the available textbooks. AS a tool for the control of a complex process involving many chemical reactions, physical chemistry can become very valuable. The specialist who is using this tool for many purposes and perhaps contributing to its development will want to know a great deal more about it than can be included in this book. He will be interested in its history, its accomplishments and limitations, and its applications to many and varied problems. To the steelmaker or metallurgist, however, it is only one of a number of tools that he must use. He is willing to forego the detailed study of its inner workings in order to concentrate upon the development of skill in its application. It is the purpose of this chapter to present a simplified view of physical chemistry as a tool of great potential usefulness. This purpose and the desire for brevity have required the elimination of many of the gadgets with which the tool is usually adorned. It is hoped that this simplification will be conducive to clear understanding. The beginner is urged not to overlook the more extended treatments of the standard textbooks.* He is assured at the same time that the basic tool is sound and serviceable and is guaranteed to give satisfaction if regularly lubricated with common sense. Certain parts of physical chemistry require rather formidable mathematics for their complete development, but in the main those applications in which we are here interested can be expressed in fairly

THE Searles Lake orebody is located in the north- west corner of San Bernardlno County. It is a dry lake bed with an exposed salt surface covering an area of 12 square miles. Recoverable mineral values are contained in the mother liquor below the surface of the lake. Stratification in the lake bed has separated the brine into two bodies which dlffer in composition. Although liquor is processed from both bodies, this paper will discuss only the upper structure brine. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical cross-section of the two commercial orebodies. The orebody is composed of a porous salt deposit 70 to 90 ft deep. The upper structure is separated from the lower orebody by a 12 to 16-ft thick impervious mud seam, as shown in Fig. 1. These salt structures are composed of 55 pct solid-phase salts and 45 pct voids which are filled with the original mother liquor. The brine wells are drilled to the separating mud seam and cased to wlthin 10 ft of the bottom. This is done to draw the brine horizontally from the bottom of the structure. It is pumped with multistage centrifugal pumps Into the plant at the rate of 3 milllon gal per day. The first process that was successful was developed by Charles P. Grimwood for the recovery of potash. The first evaporator unit was built in 1916. In the early twenties, Dr. Morse worked out a process for the recovery of borax. This made the cycle more efficient, as the end liquor could be sent back to the evaporators rather than being sewered. In 1926 the American Potash & Chemical Corp. was formed as a new company, and the entire plant was remodeled. The plant at that time produced only potash, borax, and boric acid. Since then the American Potash & Chemical Corp. has added processes for the production of USP boric acid, refined potash, sulphate of potash, soda ash, salt cake, lithium concentrates, Pyrobor (Na2B4O7) bromine, phosphoric acid, and lithium carbonate. The main plant cycle may be depicted as a closed cycle, see Fig. 2. The raw material, brine, enters the cycle to be mixed with the end liquor, known as ML2, from the pentahydrate borax crystallizers. The mixture of these two forms evaporator feed. Evaporator feed is pumped to the evaporators where it is concentrated, with respect to potash and borax. In the same operation water vapor, sodium chloride, salt trap salt, and clarifier salt are removed from the cycle, see Fig. 3 for potash plant product. The evaporators produce a concentrated liquor which contains approximately 19.5 pct KCI. This liquor is diluted as it enters the potash plant to keep all salts, except potash (KCI, 97.0 pct) in solution. Here the moist potash leaves the cycle at 100°F. The end liquor, known as ML1, is pumped to the borax pentahydrate crystallizers, where crude borax pentahydrate is crystallized and removed as solid phase. The ML2 is sent back to pan feed to be reconcen-trated, see page 207. Note that the only water to leave the cycle is in the form of vapor and moisture in the solid phase products crystallized. Thus there is a constantly cycling volume of liquor to which brine is added. Since the volume of liquor cycled does not increase, the brine is, in effect, evaporated to dryness. This would be true if there were no liquor losses. But, as in all processes, there are always unavoidable and accidental losses which reduce the volume of cycling liquors. The losses must be made up with brine. The concentration process is the beginning and the end of the cycling liquors. In this process there are three evaporator units of the triple effect counter-current type, that is, there are three pans in each unit and the heat flows in one direction while the liquor flows the other way through the evaporator pans, see Fig. 4. During the evaporation process a great deal of sodium chloride, burkeite, some sodium carbonate monohydrate, and a little lithium-sodium phosphate are crystallized. The volume of these salts is so great that they must be removed as they are formed or the process would come to a standstill. Brine and recycled mother liquor No. 2 enter the third effect evaporator pan from the evaporator feed storage tanks, see Fig. 5. A steady flow of liquor is removed from the bottom of the No. 3 pan and is pumped through the No. 3 cone of the salt trap, a clear liquor being returned to the NO. 3 pan. A portion of this clear liquor is pumped to the second effect pan. This process is repeated in each pan. The liquor from the No. 2 pan is pumped through the No. 2 salt trap cone and returned to the No. 2 pan.

Four Mn-CLL alloys, containing 60, 70, 80, and 90 pct Mn, respectively, have been examined in the quenched and the quenched and aged conditions using electron microscopy and electron, neutron, and X-ray diffraction. After certain heat treatments the alloys transform from fee to fct and in the tetraom1 condition show a domain structure parallel to {101} planes. Neutron diffraction indicates that the domains are antiferrornagnetically ordered. The domain boundary contrast has been examined using bright- and dark-field microscopy, and the contrast effects observed under favorable conditions have been used to deduce the c axis orientation in each domain. The domains are extremely mobile and can be nucleated at precipitate particles and screw dislocations. The domain mobility is responsible for the high damping capacity. In the aged material a Mn precipitates in the Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation and results of both electron microscopy and neutron diffraction indicate that the matrix separates into two components—one rich in manganese and the other rich in copper. ALLOYS of manganese and copper have the unusual combination of a high damping capacity and good mechanical properties and have been the subject of a number of investigations as part of a general interest in high damping capacity alloys for engineering purposes.&apos;,&apos; SO far, however, there has been no reported electron metallographic study of these alloys. The Mn-Cu system has an extensive range of solid solubility at high temperatures, and the equilibrium phases are expected to be y (fee) and a Mn. The high damping capacity is associated with a metastable tetragonal structure of variable c/a ratio, which forms from the high-temperature y phase. This latter phase becomes more difficult to retain as the manganese content increases, and alloys containing more than 82 wt pct Mn undergo a reversible martensitic fcc — fct transformation on quenching. The X-ray work of Basinski and christian3 showed that the Ms temperature for the transformation was below room temperature for alloys in the range 70 to 82 pct Mn and increased linearly with manganese content. When quenched from the y region, alloys in the range 50 to 82 pct Mn are cubic at room temperature, but become tetragonal if aged at temperatures between 400" and 600°C. The martensite transformation occurs on cooling from the aging temperature. Tetragonal alloys have a banded microstructure and the bands analyze to be traces of (110) planes. Similar microstructures have been observed in In-Tl4 and in other manganese-base systems, such as Mn-Au5 and Mn-Ni.6 The mobility of the bands in Mn-Cu alloys can be demonstrated by optical examination of a polished specimen surface subjected to a cyclic stress.7 The bands appear and disappear as the stress is varied, and X-ray measurements of the (200,020) and (002) peak intensities confirm that a reversible reorientation of the tetragonal structure occurs. Meneghetti and sidhu8 investigated the magnetic structure of Mn-Cu alloys and found antiferromagnetic ordering in furnace-cooled alloys of composition >69 at. pct Mn. Magnetic super lattice reflections occurred at the (110) and (201) positions and the proposed structure was fct with the spins along the c axis. A more complete investigation by Bacon et al.9 confirmed this structure. The magnetic ordering temperature Tn was found to increase linearly with manganese content in the same way as the Ms temperature, and at any composition, Tn > Ms. This relationship suggested that the magnetic ordering was responsible for the cubic — tetragonal transformation in the manganese-rich alloys. The purpose of this investigation was to study the mechanism of high damping and the structural changes that occur on aging. The main technique used was transmission electron microscopy, but X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments were also carried out. EXPERIMENTAL Materials and Heat Treatment. The four alloys, provided by the Admiralty Materials Laboratory. were of nominai composition 60, 70, 80, and 90 Mn and all had low impurity levels, <0.05 pct C, <0.2 pct Fe. This material was cold-rolled to 200-µ strip with intermediate annealing and then given a final heat treatment of 24 hr in the range 800° to 900°C followed by water quenching. An identical heat treatment was given a length of 3/4-in.-diam bar of the 70/30 alloy from which the neutron diffraction specimens were machined. It was suspected that the tetragonal structures would be metastable at room temperature, and so the alloys were not aged until required for experiments. After aging in a salt bath the alloys were water-quenched. Thin Foil Preparation. Initial thinning to 50 to 75 µ was possible in a solution consisting of: 50 ml nitric acid 25 ml acetic acid 25 ml water The surface deposit and grain boundary etching was removed by a final electropolish at around 20 V in an electrolyte consisting of:

Gloomy predictions that domestic mineral reserves are approaching exhaustion are unwarranted and may be harmful, this author contends. Specific mineral forecasting errors in the Paley Report are cited to support this contention, and steps that can be taken to insure a progressive mineral industry capable of keeping pace with the major raw material needs of the nation through advancing technology are suggested. Mining is both exciting and rewarding —although at times somewhat frustrating— and we all can have real pride in our industry, in its people, and in its accomplishments. It is, however, with concern that I have noted a deterioration in this Country in what might be called mining&apos;s stature and in the growth of a belief in many quarters that our mineral reserves are rapidly approaching exhaustion. In other words, there is a popular image that we are fast becoming a "have not" nation in many respects and that the domestic mining industry can no longer be considered, in the vernacular of Wall Street to offer much in the way of "growth potential." I do not subscribe to this hypothesis, nor do I be-li4ve that the record of the mining industry bears this out. However, let me add that we can, in time, talk ourselves into this frame of mind and we can hasten the day when this very well might come about by unnecessary and unwise legislation or regulation. My remarks today are basically designed to give my reasons for refuting this negative philosophy and to review our record. With your help, I know we can improve our image, and the public&apos;s recognition of our industry&apos;s peculiar problems. The progress of our civilization over the centuries has been fundamentally based upon proper use of raw materials, both agricultural and mineral, and upon energy, human or otherwise. As the standard of living has progressed century by century, the demands for mineral raw materials have increased in an irregular, but steadily rising progression. Fortunately, those minerals on which we depend most, i.e., iron, coal, petroleum, copper, aluminum, lead, and zinc have been neither too difficult to find nor to process into useful form. Iron, the most useful of all metals, is present in various amounts in most rock types and soils. Gold, seemingly the most generally desired (but certainly not the most useful of all metals), occurs in sea water in a far greater total tonnage than has been won from all of the world&apos;s known gold mines. If the latter is true, then why do we not see large installations treating sea water for the recovery of its gold content? The answer, of course, is that even the French, who seem, from their recent actions, to value gold above all else, have not devised a way of doing this at a profit. Theoretically, it is possible, but not with today&apos;s technology at a cost which would justify the effort. Man has exploited only those mineral concentrations which accidents of nature have placed within his so far limited means of finding and utilizing. What we geologists and engineers refer to as an orebody is nothing more than a concentration of minerals, exploitable with available knowledge, that will yield a value greater than the value attached to the energy and capital required to produce it. What is "ore" and what is not "ore" is, in the end, a matter of economics. The economic problem stems from the physical and chemical character of mineral deposits. The good Lord stacked the cards heavily in favor of rising costs by limiting the amount of the higher grade ores easily available. As the best and most accessible ores are depleted, it becomes necessary to work harder and with greater ingenuity to produce more from less accessible and lower grade resources. The quantity of mineral raw materials we can have in the future will be determined largely by what we can afford to pay for them in terms of human effort, capital outlay and production energies. We will always have the problem of cost with us and our only real means of keeping ahead of rising costs is by continually improving our technical abilities. We, in this country at least, no longer have open to us large and unexplored virgin wildernesses in which a pick-and-shovel prospector might uncover an untouched mineral bonanza. The rest of the world also has few conventional frontiers left in which the explorer-prospector is free to roam. We do, however, have enormous land areas unexplored, and untouched po-

Using alternating tension-compression straining, the hardening of magnesium oxide single crystals was studied up to large stresses and strains. At 0.25 pct plastic strain amplitude, the hardening curve is approximately linear with slope 25,000 psi from the shear yield stress, 7 to 8000 psi, to 35,000psi. Above this stress, the slope decreases. The strain hardening behavior of MgO is considered qualitatively similar to that of metal single crystals. The relatively high stress attainable by strain hardening is associated apparently with the high yield stress on the cross-slip system, (001) <110>. Cleavage fracture during testing is uncommon. It is argued that the centers of high internal stress at glide band intersections, at which cracks tend to nucleate, are dispersed by cyclic strain. Special features of the glide band structure produced by cyclic strain and revealed by dislocation etch pits, support this view. Strain hardened MgO has mechanical properties greatly superior to the as-received material: yield stress, greater than 100,000 psi; elongation to fracture about 1 pct. A material is said to strain harden if the yield stress increases with an increment of plastic strain. This definition is usually applied for straining done in one direction, but is also applicable when the strain direction is periodically reversed, Fig. 1. For certain metal single crystals, data are available which permit a comparison of the hardening behavior for cyclic straining and for tension straining.&apos;-4 With certain qualifications, these data show that the same processes of hardening are operative in each type of test.5 Despite this fact, the importance of the technique is not immediately evident, although tension-compression studies of the common metals appear to suggest some deficiencies in theories of strain hardening developed exclusively on the basis of tensile tests. However, a recent observation suggests that the cyclic straining method may be very useful for studying semibrittle crystals in which large plastic strains are not accessible in unidirectional testing. The observation is that zinc crystals, when strained in tension-compression at -52°C, do not fail by cleavage at low stress (-500 psi)6 as they do in tension, but harden to a limiting stress of more than 5000 psi over a total plastic strain of about 600 pct.2 An important characteristic of the behavior of zinc crystals is the high stress, relative to the yield stress, attainable by strain hardening. By comparison, the hardening of aluminum single crystals tested by an identical technique saturates at 1100 psi. This difference is best explained by the cross-slip hypothesis of dynamic recovery.7,8 In zinc, cross slip is difficult because of the high yield stress for glide on planes other than the basal plane in the < 1120 > zone. The present work was undertaken in order to test whether these methods and ideas are applicable to other materials. Magnesium oxide single crystals, in common with most crystals of the rock-salt structure, deform plastically but fail by cleavage after a small strain when tested in tension. It was hoped that larger strains would be attained using tension-compression. There is, in addition, evidence 8a which shows that slip on the probable cross system, (001) < 110>, is difficult in magnesium oxide; it may therefore be possible to attain high stresses by strain hardening. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Experimental methods used in this study were based in part on techniques reported in papers of Stokes, Johnston, and Li.&apos; MgO blocks, purchased from Norton Co., were used without further annealing. Specimens were cleaved to dimensions approximately 0.125 in. sq and 1 in. in length. The gage section, formed by chemical polishing, was sprinkled with 280 mesh silicon carbide particles in order to introduce fresh dislocations. The crystals were then cemented into cylindrical aluminum adapters and clamped in an Instron testing machine. One of two alternating straining programs was used. In the first, total cross-head travel was established and increased in steps after various numbers of cycles. In the second, a capacitance gage was used to directly measure the elongation of the specimen and the crosshead was controlled so as to keep the plastic strain amplitude constant. The straining was always symmetrical with respect to the initial, zero strain condition. While both procedures produce strain hardening, only the latter permits a measure of the total plastic strain so that hardening curves may be drawn. Constant plastic strain amplitude tests were done

MINERAL production in almost all European countries suffered a sharp setback because of the war. Plants were damaged, transportation facilities disrupted, and labor dispersed and demoralized. Since the war, due to lack of confidence and economic stability, there has been little incentive to rebuild and expand the mineral industries even though a big demand at high prices exists for mineral products. Most mining and metallurgical companies in Europe hesitate to invest their capital because of the tendency towards nationalizing industry, high taxes, and low output of labor, as well as the deficiency of mine supplies and equipment within their countries. In short, they do not have faith in the future, and for these same reasons and fears most of the mining companies in America will not risk capital investment in Europe. In Europe, including the United Kingdom, free enterprise has been losing ground and as a result the foundation of their economic welfare is being undermined. American mining interests willing to take the initiative could help in counteracting this influence if a way were found for them to co-operate with the European producer without too great a risk.
