Aspects of blast vibrations, damage mechanisms and the influence of rock quality on damage severity are reviewed and results presented from a monitoring programme in which the rock mass rating for six tunnels was determined. The peak particle velocity induced in the tunnels during open-pit blasting was measured and the tunnels were inspected visually for fresh damage after each blast. The results suggest that the quality of rock in which an excavation is situated has an influence on the level of ground vibration to which it can be subjected without sustaining damage. This means that the use of a single limiting value of peak particle velocity, as in the blast damage criteria for residential structures, is not ideal and may result in damage to excavations in poorer-quality rock masses

"Introduction It has long been recognized by the hot-dip galvanizing industry that the characteristics of the galvanized coating can be influenced significantly by steel and pro cessing variables. Probably the variable of most concern to galvan izers today is steel chemistry. More specifically, the problem is the excessive reactivity of continuously-cast, silicon-bearing steels. In the past, structural steels processed by general galvanizers were in the low-to-medium ca rbon category and contained silicon at either low impurity levels (as with rimmed steels), or less than approximately 0.10% (as with semi-killed steels). The structures of the coatings produced on such steels are characterized by dense, compact layers of delta and zeta iron-zinc alloy phases and a distinct outer layer of eta zinc, which usually imparts a bright shiny appearance to the coating. The presence of silicon in steel, above the so-called semi-killed levels, is known to cause marked stru ctural changes in galvanized coatings. Such coatings are characterized by a relatively thin delta layer, a thick , coarse zeta layer and frequently an absence of the eta layer. The eta phase, comprising zinc which is carried out of the bath during withdrawal of the work, can be consumed by the continuation of the coating reactions until its temperature drops to the solidification point. This results in a dull grey and often mottled surface instead of the usually bright metallic appearance. These galvanized coatings are usually much thicker than coating specifications requ ire and they are usually more brittle and have poor adhesion to the steel. In service, these coatings tend to develop a rust-like discolouration. With the wider use of continuous casting by the steel producers and the associated additions of silicon in this process, the problem is becoming more important and receiving greater attention from the galvanizing industry ."

A computerized system (SCAPEVIEWER) based on landscape indices and artificial intelligence techniques is proposed in order to classify landscape images into various categories according to the quality of the pictured scenery. Photographs (totally 108) from various landscapes have been clustered, from seven experts in accordance to the mean estimation of landscape quality, into distinctive (C1), typical or common (C2), and indistinctive (C3). For each of the landscape photographs, ten (10) environmental and operational indices have been selected and determined, corresponding to visibility (V), naturalness (N), relief (R), flora quantity (FC), flora quality (F), water (W), skyline (SL), visual entities (G), season (S), and viewer position (P). These landscape indices are fed to a classifier. The classifier is a feed forward Neural Network (NN) trained by a novel hybrid method combining genetic algorithms and the back-propagation algorithm with adaptive learning rate and momentum. A total classification rate of 93.5% has been achieved, using only 8 input neurons. The discarded input neurons correspond to the indices S, and P. The pilot system SCAPEVIEVER has shown the feasibility of landscape photograph classification into three categories (C1, C2, and C3) according to the landscape quality, selecting simultaneously the most robust indices, by means of a computerized system combining the knowledge of an expert with a NN based classifier.

The field of industrial minerals is concerned with both sieve size and distribution of sub-sieve particles. A great deal of work has been reported on the techniques designed to provide information of this work. The term sub-sieve is here considered to include particular material that will pass a 325-mesh testing sieve. Plant men require rapid, precise and simple testing techniques that are, if possible, inexpensive with respect to equipment and manpower. A number of particle-size procedures have been developed, based on the Stokes equation for streamline movement of a particle of diam D, moving at velocity V through a liquid of viscosity n. 1 Particles are considered to be rigid, smooth spheres, completely dispersed at low concentration and moving at low velocity through the suspending medium with no slippage between particle and liquid. In particle size determinations the particle moves either from natural gravitational forces or those provided by centrifugal means. The diagram of Fig. 1 shows a spherical particle of density S and diam D moving downward at velocity L/T (or V) through a liquid of density So and viscosity n. "Co-rich ferromanganese crusts (Fe-Mn crusts) distributed on seamounts in the western Pacific are potential economic resources for cobalt, nickel, platinum, and other rare metals in the future. Evaluation and selection of a mining site can be established based on abundance and grade of Fe-Mn crusts in the site as well as topography that should be smooth enough for mining operations. Therefore, acquisition of shipboard echo-sounding and acoustic backscatter data are prerequisite to the selection of potential mine sites in addition to visual and sampling operations. Acoustic backscatter data can be used to locate crust-covered areas on a regional scale with the understanding of acoustic properties of crust through its correlation with visual and sampling data.During an expedition that took place from January to March 2014, KIOST collected geophysical and geologic data to assess the resource potential for Fe-Mn crusts on three seamounts (guyots) in the Western Pacific. In OSM11, one of the three surveyed seamounts, three camera tows were performed to observe the distribution of Fe-Mn crusts on the summit and slopes of the seamount. Although sediments of various thicknesses generally cover most of summit region of OSM11, several regions with high backscatter signals occur on the periphery of the summit. The occurrence of Fe-Mn crusts, observed during the camera tows, on those high backscattered regions suggests that the backscatter signals of shipboard multi-beam sonar can reflect changes in the geology of the seafloor from sediment layer to Fe-Mn crust deposits. The Fe-Mn crust deposited around the summit region is worthy of notice because of its topographic characteristics, including shallow depth, flat or gentle inclined surface, and smooth relief, which are more suitable for mining operation compared to the flanks of seamount."

THE BUREAU OF MINES was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve mineral resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to "disseminate information concerning these subjects 'in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.'" In accordance with that directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau sources. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes Bureau reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1960 to December 31, 1964. It, supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960,2 and the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960.3 It supersedes the annual lists of Bureau publications and articles from January 1 to December 31, 1960,4 from January 1 to December 31, 1961,5 from January 1 to December 31, 1962,6 and from January 1 to December 31, 1963.7 The leading general and technical libraries of the United States maintain files of the Bureau's publications. Mining and metallurgy have had a long history in China, and resources there have always been considered promising. Under the People's Republic of China (PRC), a remarkable industrial renaissance is underway that should further gain momentum in the years ahead. Rapid development of minerals have not only brought the PRC prominence in industrialization, but also in world affairs. Chinese mineral developments, especially petroleum, have been increasingly in the news. Oil and gas may have great potential, but a very large coal industry is already in existence. The steel industry ranks fifth or sixth in the world. The PRC is also prominent in fertilizer, cement, and salt production. The export metals are well known. Also, the country is buying heavily in nonferrous base metals. The need to know and the intense interest in the subject have prompted this study. The world significance of Chinese minerals is pointed out. The history of growth and PRC's mineral supply position are reviewed. Evaluations are made of policy considerations and regional and technical factors affecting mineral development. PRC's mineral trade and efforts to obtain equipment, supplies, and know-how are assessed. Specific reviews are made of major mineral sectors, including coal and power, oil and gas, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, industrial minerals, and fertilizers and chemicals. The overall outlook is summarized.

The work effort on the updated directory concentrated on programs that are available to the public and are well documented.

Against the receding background of the October stock market crash and the December overhang of inventories, the economy began with a shaky start in 1988. As 1988 began, the Administration's estimate of real growth for 1988 had just been reduced from 3.5% to 2.4% and economists and other ob-servers were concerned that the expansion that was 5 years old might be near the end and that a recession might be around the corner. The ensuing moderately strong economic activity, however, belied all the negative signals that were evident earlier, and the real GNP continued to grow at an estimated 2.3% annual rate during the first quarter of 1988, extending the ongoing recovery into the sixth year (table 1.). The relatively accommodative policy of the Federal Reserve Board (the discount rate was cut by 0.25% in January), a strong performance by the export sector, and the revival of consumer spending were major forces underlying the economic strength. But as the quarter drew to a close, signs of tight capacity utilizations were apparent in many of the export and capital goods sectors, including textile, chemical, plastic, metal, and machinery. Employment was at a record high level while the unemployment rate was close to a historical low. Prices were rising at a faster pace than those of 1987, and the dollar resumed its slide after a brief recovery in January and February. These factors gave rise to the fears of higher inflation. Long-term interest rates increased, casting a pall over the prospect of a robust growth for the rest of the year.

On a regular basis, mine personnel should obtain air samples directly from active underground areas as well as remotely from sealed locations. These samples provide mine officials with data relative to the makeup of the various atmospheres. Should conditions underground change, these results can provide a baseline that can assist officials in determining the extent of change. Relating the concentrations of individual gases to time, applying gases to equations, and examining their change over time are tools that have been successfully used to determine if a heating event exists and, if so, the extent of the emergency. These atmospheric status equations have either been developed for the mining industry or adapted from other industries. They serve as tools to assist personnel in determining the condition of underground mine atmospheres. As long as the problem area continues to be ventilated, certain gases, gas ratios, and equations can be used to determine if a fire exists, what type of material could be burning, and what quantity of coal is burning. Once the mine or the involved section has been temporarily sealed, gases, ratios, and gas-derived equations can assist personnel in determining how conditions within the sealed volume are changing over time. To alleviate potential explosions when fresh air is once again introduced into the sealed volume, equations and a diagram have been developed to predict the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere. Similarly, prior to commencing recovery of a mine or section, equations exist that can assist in determining if the fire will rekindle when air is reintroduced. This paper serves as an overview to remind and/or instruct readers about gas-sampling methodologies and gas analyses to assist in determining the status of underground atmospheres.

The development of commercial natural-gas reserves in the Michigan stray sandstone horizon of central Michigan during the past few years has resulted in expansion of the natural-gas industry in that State. The location of the natural-gas reserves of Michigan in the general vicinity of domestic and industrial markets is of economic importance, and in supplying these markets with natural gas a reasonable knowledge of, the extent and availability of the reserves is needed in formulating regulations for drilling gas wells and producing natural gas in analyzing the feasibility of projects to construct natural-gas transmission lines, in promoting and developing markets for the domestic and industrial consumption of natural gas, and in solving many engineering and economic problems common to the natural-gas industry. The development of the natural-gas industry in Michigan has been related closely to the development of oil production. The potential oil production of Michigan is comparable with that in most of the eastern oil-producing States. The development of oil production probably will continue, especially in the central Michigan Basin area; and as wells are drilled to deep horizons in the search for oil, more knowledge will be obtained of the gas reserves in formations above the oil-bearing horizons.

SPONGE IRON has been defined as the metallic product formed by the reduction (removal of combined oxygen) of iron ore or other iron oxides at temperatures below the fusion point of iron. This product probably derived the name "sponge iron" from its porous nature. When the reduction proceeds at slightly higher temperatures and the particles of metal weld together or finally even melt to yield pellets or balls that lack the porosity and low-density characteristic of sponge iron, the product might more correctly be called "direct iron."

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation's $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado's service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state's mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry's woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado's overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax's Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent's Orchard Valley mine. High production and transportation costs, weakness in the US steel industry, and a weak market position have contributed to the decline, the summary reported. General economic conditions continued to improve in the second quarter of 1984 as real gross national product advanced at an annual rate of 7.5 percent (table 1). This followed an even larger first quarter annual rate increase of 10.1 percent. The slower second quarter growth was greeted as a sign that the economy is not over-heating. The signs of slowed growth in some sectors suggest that the recovery may continue well into 1985 without the inflation symptomatic of a rapid recovery. Most of the slowdown in growth was absorbed by business inventories, personal consumption of durable goods, and residential fixed investment. Business inventories grew by only 68 percent as much as in the first quarter, personal consumption for durable goods grew by 58 percent of the first quarter rate, and residential fixed investment slowed to only 44 percent of the first quarter growth. Sectors with accelerated growth in the second quarter included personal consumption of nondurable goods and of services, which increased at annual rates of 9.6 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively, and Federal purchases of goods and services, which increased at an annual rate of 47.9 percent.

Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

"Aeromagnetic data can be useful in helping to delineate structures and rock types in gold exploration. Magnetic anomalies associated with Archean volcanic belts in northeastern Ontario can be quickly and effectively analyzed in profile form with the use of model curves. The model curves help to locate contacts between strata. They also help to estimate the magnetite content of the rocks and their depth beneath overburden.An aeromagnetic map of part of Catharine Township, Ontario has been analyzed with the aid of model curves. Several magnetic rock types, potential fault zones and areas of relatively thick overburden were delineated.IntroductionIn any exploration program, a good understanding of the stratigraphy, rock types and structure enhances the possibility of success. For example, environments which host gold deposits in the Abitibi Volcanic Belt may be characterized as follows (Jensen, 1980; Pyke, 1980):(I) They have major faults, especially as tectonic boundaries between volcanic piles which include mafic and ultramafic rocks and clastic sedimentary rocks or gneisses.(2) They have subvolcanic felsic intrusions.(3) They have extensive carbonitization, with or without carbonate and sulphide-facies iron formation.In all cases, delineation of structure and rock type should be a major objective in exploration. The analysis of magnetic data can be a useful tool in this task. This paper is presented with the purpose of describing the application of the magnetic method to gold exploration in Archean volcanic terrains.Magnetic AnalysisTotal-intensity magnetic contour maps can be used to discriminate rock units according to differences in magnetization. However, because of smoothing of texture resulting from the compilation procedure and the fact that survey lines are widely spaced, contours should not be directly used for quantitative analysis. A much more definitive means of magnetic analysis is provided by the use of the original profile or chart recordings. Model curves provide a basis for analyzing these profiles both accurately and rapidly."

Technical problems associated with the cleanup of historic mines are not new. Nor are they unique to the mining industry or the governmental agencies addressing them. Both face the same issues and challenges of defining the problems, evaluating remediation options and finding the most economic and effective solutions.

Mineral raw materials produced in California, other States, and foreign countries were purchased for consumption in quantities valued at over $60 million at 800 of the 1,200 chemical plants operating in California in 1960, according to questionnaires completed by company officials. These and other data received from mineral consumers, producers, dealers, and Government agencies formed the basis for this the first of a series of reports designed to present the intricate features and relationships controlling mineral raw material supply and demand in California industries. The results of this study indicated certain changes in use patterns of minerals in chemica 1 manufacturing; a shift in requirements from metals to nonmeta ls, from inorganics to organics, from natura 1 to synthet ic materia ls , and from distant to local sources of supply.

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo.
