On June 4, Kennecott Utah Copper (KUC)marked the centennial of the founding of the original company. Bill Champion is president and chief executive officer of KUC. He said, “What has happened during the past 100 years far surpassed even the most optimistic visions of men like Daniel C. Jackling and Robert Gemmell when they promoted the concept of mass production techniques for a low-grade deposit of copper ore. At that time, it was a totally new way of doing things and the mining leaders of that day scoffed at the idea. They said it would never work,” Champion said. The company will celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime occasion with a few special projects, mainly for the benefit of our employees, said Louie Cononelos, director of government and public affairs for KUC. The company has designed and minted a commemorative copper coin that reflects early steam shovel and locomotive operations on one side, and today’s modern electric shovels and huge haulage trucks on the other side. “The history of the company stems from the ores of the Bingham Canyon Mine. That coin has been encased as part of a10-panel brochure that captures the company’s 100 year history,” he said. KUC also developed special centennial banners and comparable framed posters that were displayed throughout its operations and at selected community locations that have enjoyed a long-time partnership and special relationship with the company. Some of the plants also designed their own centennial hardhat decals.

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1980, 13 companies operated 33 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 62% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 30% of the total production; Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas 19%; Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina 15%; other central and eastern States 36%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1980 was valued at over $7 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 26% of domestic consumption in 1980, building 22%, transportation 21%, electrical 12%, consumer durables 7%, and other uses 12%.

I. INTRODUCTION. In presenting, this paper the writers wish to call attention first of all to the fact that the electric furnace was not developed as a competitor of the combustion furnace, but: 1. For the purpose of doing high-temperature work which it is not possible to do in the combustion furnace; and 2. For the treatment of ores from deposits which. are located in regions where fuel is scarce and costly, and where hydro-electric power is comparatively cheap, as is the case in Chili, in Canada, in certain parts of this country and Mexico.. This paper is not presented with the idea of trying to. prove that the electric furnace should replace the reverberatory or the blast furnace as used at present in the smelting of copper ores, but that it may be substituted for their in those localities which are not favorable to them,) and where either of the two following conditions may exist: (a) A district remote from railway transportation. facilities, and where there is a deposit, or deposits, containing sufficient values to warrant their being worked, but which, due to the cost of getting coke in for operating a smelter and of getting ore out to a smelter, have to remain unworked.. And where, on the other hand, there is plenty of water power which call he developed at reasonable cost for the production of electric power, by the use of which for. smelting the ores in an electric furnace, with subsequent Bessermerization if necessary, a concentrated product may be obtained, which can easily stand the necessary transportation charges. (b) Or,. comparatively speaking, the transportation facilities may be all right, but the cost of fuel be too great to permit of the ordinary methods of smelting, whereas,- on the other hand, hydro-electric power can he developed: in the district at a, low cost,, and the ores could be smelted by the electric furnace at a cost. that would make their treatment possible. With these possibilities in mind we have attempted to make a brief comparative study of the problem for the purpose of aiding those interested in the subject, in determining whether it would be possible metallurgically, and feasible commercially; to use the electric furnace-in those localities where, by reason: of excessive fuel costs, the cost, of operating the furnaces for smelting copper-ores. is either excessive or prohibitive. "This paper presents the geologic and ground control challenges that were encountered by CONSOL Energy’s mining operations in southwestern Pennsylvania. A sandstone-to-limestone geology transition was encountered by Mine A, where the primary 8-foot bolts were anchored in claystone. Upon experiencing roof sags and a roof fall in the return entry, 6-foot high-tension, fully-grouted primary bolts were employed along with 16-foot center cable bolts at every other strap to improve beam building and to ensure proper anchorage into the competent limestone. No longwall delay was reported within this geologic transition zone, although there was some difficulty in maintaining an open #2 entry airway behind the longwall face.The geologic encounter in Mine B was more complex, where fluvial deposits of massive sandstone channels, shale channels and pyritic-rich, green claystones were encountered on both sides of the mains, and which impacted both development and longwall ground control. In particular, poor transitional roof areas near the edges of the sandstone and shale channels often posed significant ground control challenges. In addition, hydraulic fracturing was sometimes utilized to enhance caving of massive sandstone behind the shields to relieve pressure at the face. Longwall face conditions and advance rates were documented to illustrate the effects of sandstone channels, shale channels, and green claystones on safety and productivity and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the hydraulic fracturing.Shale channels, slickensided zones, laminated roof zones, soft floor, and a regional syncline were encountered in Mine C, the combination of which posed unique ground control challenges during both development and longwall mining. The presence of soft floor, coupled with the presence of thick floor coal and deep cover, resulted in headgate convergence during retreat of the first right-hand longwall panel. Two-piece 8-foot bolts were sometimes observed to fail at the coupler within the laminated roof zone, and 6-foot, 1-piece, fully-grouted point-anchor bolts were employed as the primary bolts thereafter."

The subject of surface mine development is large. This section covers the fundamental concepts involved in both the open pit mining of thick or steeply dipping deposits as well as the strip mining of thin, shallow, and relatively flat-lying seams or beds. Design involves the marrying of geometries, ore and waste characteristics, equipment, and economics so that the desired result is achieved. Generally, there are many possible combinations from which to choose. For example, extraction over a short time period requires one strategy while quite another is applied for longer times. Variations in supply and demand require some flexibility of operation. Customer requirements impose certain constraints regarding the set of possible designs. Over recent years, planning and operating considerations for surface mining imposed by environmental requirements have increased markedly. There have, at the same time, been enormous advances made in the design aids available to the mine planner. Computer simulation of the various options, whether it be for mine design or equipment selection, provides detailed information for decision making in real time. A significant challenge to the engineer/planner is how to best use the aids avail-able. Because of the widespread use of commercially available and in-house computer software by industry, this section does not deal with the details of planning (for basic coverage of mine development, see Section 7). Rather, some of the basic concepts are stressed. The principles involved in equipment sizing and selection are discussed. A highly important but sometimes over-looked aspect of planning, haul road design, is also covered. For surface mining operations of the future, in-pit crushing and conveying will become even more important. Some of the considerations for application evaluation are included. The section concludes with some future concepts for surface mining.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE purpose of this paper is, first, to give a general account of a little-known coal-district of SE. Kentucky, its topography, drainage, and mineral resources, for those who may be interested in its economic development; and secondly, so to describe the geologic features of the field as to furnish available data to those engaged on the broader problems of Appalachian coal-geology. The data from which the major portion of the paper has been prepared were obtained, in professional investigations for private individuals and corporations, within the last decade. The area under review, defined by a heavy line on the map, Fig. 1, lies between Little Black and Pine mountains, and extends from Harlan on the west to a N-S. line crossing Looney creek 3 miles from its mouth on the east. This area can be divided for description into a Western and an Eastern Division. The character of investigation pursued in the Western Division, below Fugitt creek, was very different from that employed in the Eastern. In the former, only a rapid reconnoissance was attempted : such coal-openings as had been made by prospectors or by citizens in obtaining fuel were visited, their sections measured and, in many instances, sampled. Elevations were obtained barometrically and approximate locations sketched on a small-scale map. In a field where the coals are so well opened, the reconnoissance method gives a very fair idea of the number and character of the principal beds and their relative positions, and affords much evidence for their correlation over wide areas, without permitting the more refined work required to discover all the seams of the measures and to determine the details of geologic structure.

A well-defined bulge of the unconformity underlies the mineralized zone over its entire length.The deposit appears to be controlled by an east-west-trending structure within which a particular rock facies (""augen gneiss"") has developed in the graphitic metapelites of the Wollaston Group. It is surrounded by a strong alteration halo affecting both sandstone and basement, characterized by extensive development of Mg-A I rich clay minerals (illite-chlorite).The mineralization is hosted principally by the Athabasca sandstone, and consists mainly of uraninite and sulfo-arsenides of nickel and cobalt.Numerous geochemical and geophysical surveys have been carried out in the Cigar Lake area, and no specific geochemical or geophysical anomaly can be directly associated with the mineralized body, although there may be locally a good coincidence. A study is described which attempts to identify the chemical factors of common concern to environmental and exploration geochemistry as indicated by recent work in both disciplines in Nova Scotia. Cores taken in lake sediments define geochemical baselines for the modern and pre-industrialisation periods. The investigation of lake and stream drainage indicates the presence of numerous chemical and organic factors that can be attributed to man's activities, such as construction and energy consumption. Geochemical surveys of lake and stream sediments are used to locate potentially toxic, high risk areas in Nova Scotia. Rapid change occurs in most surface drainage systems with the possibility of numerous chemical reactions taking place. It is found that spatial and temporal variations in the chemistry of modern and recent sediments are of interest to exploration and environmental surveys.

É comum o uso de modelos matemáticos no intuito de prever a qualidade do coque, sendo a maioria dos modelos atualmente disponíveis baseada nas propriedades dos carvões. Para este trabalho foram feitas misturas binárias e ternárias de carvões com variados teores de matéria volátil, a fim de se produzir coque em escala laboratorial. A reatividade ao CO2 em termobalança e resistência mecânica em tambores foi avaliada. Dois modelos para previsão de indicadores de qualidade do coque foram avaliados, o modelo aditivo e o modelo de interação. A partir da metodologia desenvolvida em laboratório foi possível produzir, avaliar e comparar coques feitos a partir de diferentes carvões e misturas. O modelo aditivo mostrou uma boa capacidade de prever a reatividade dos coques. No entanto, para os índices derivados dos testes de tambores os valores calculados mostram uma diferença importante em relação aos experimentais, indicando interação dos carvões no processo de carbonização. Nos resultados do modelo de interações, os valores calculados para reatividade e resistência mecânica, se comparados com os resultados do modelo aditivo, mostraram uma melhora na capacidade de previsão da qualidade do coque. O modelo de interações se apresenta como uma ferramenta interessante na seleção e mistura de carvões.

A minitest of the new potassium chloride-potassium carbonate two-stage in situ uranium leach process has been carried out at the Intercontinental Energy Corporation (IEC) Zamzow project site in South Texas. Substantial quantities of high concentration uranium were produced indicating the viability of the leach solution. The test results yield information regarding the reservoir dispersivity, the average cation-exchange capacity of the formation, and the distribution coefficients describing carion-exchange reactions. The test a1 so indicates permeability anisotropy and the existence of disturbed flow fields. The research was partially funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

The concept of sustainable development has been evolved into a working framework for sustainable manufacturing, in which the environmental requirements are introduced into product development at the design stage. This keynote paper is discussing a number of issues pertaining to the impact of manufacturing on the environment. The conflicting requirements of sustainable development, sustainable manufacturing (SM) and economical growth are presented in the light of successful case studies that were able to convert conflicts into opportunities. Integration of SM into the product life cycle is also presented. A number of concepts that are related to Ecoefficiency, e.g., inverse manufacturing, demanufacturing and re-manufacturing are also discussed. The paper underlines the fact that the positive impact of this new philosophy is equally applicable and beneficial to both; developed and developing countries. The paper concludes with an overview of Global trends in environmentally benign manufacturing (EBM); e.g., product-take back and emerging material and processing technologies. The state-of-the-art approach to Life Cycle Impact Assessment and integration of design for the environment DfE principles are demonstrated through some case study.

WHILE mining engineers have been searching in far corners of the country and of the world for hidden wealth there has grown up around us in nearly every city great wealth-producing mines calling for the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars and yielding products now sold for over half a billion dollars yearly-largely unknown and almost wholly neglected by mining engineers. But this neglect is explainable and excusable. They are industries of very recent origin-practically the growth of the last 25 years. They are in a very large measure the result of tremendous developments in engineering construction and the rapidly expanding use of portland cement concrete for structures of every description. Concrete as a material of construction is going through an evolution very much as did cast iron and other metals used in engineering; and this phase of the industry should appeal to the imagination of metallurgical engineers. At first iron was iron-a material of uncertain properties, owing both to small differences in chemical composition and in methods of manufacture. By successive steps iron was studied and knowledge of its properties developed-the striking effects of very small percentages of other minerals and of various heat-treatments.

"The effect of the quenching rate on age hardening in an Al-6.0mass%Zn-0.75mass%Mg alloy sheet was investigated. The quenching rates and aging conditions were as follows: water quenching (WQ) or furnace cooling (FC) followed by pre-aging at 20°C,then artificial aging at 120, 160 or 200°Cwere performed. The peak strength of the FC and the WQ are very similarat120°C aging. It is important high strength was obtained even at the extremely slow quenching rate. On the other hand, the strength of the WQ significantly decreased compared to the FCat200°C aging. GP(I) zones were formed during the pre-aging at 20°C even if the cooling rate was very slow like the FC, and were transformed into the GP(II) ones at 70°C or higher and then into the ?’ phase. However, these zones were dissolved by reversion during heating to 200°C. Thus the strength of the WQ decreased. On the other hand, it is considered that an unknown cluster or GP zone with a thermal stability formed during the FC was not dissolved up to 200°C and was transformed into the ?’ phase. Therefore, a higher strength was obtained in the FC for the200°Caging.INTRODUCTIONAl-Zn-Mg alloys are widely available in commercial production because these alloy have lower quench sensitivity and can be produced by air cooling (AC). Heat treatable aluminum alloys are usually produced by water quenching (WQ) to increase their strength because a high cooling rate inhibits the precipitation of the stable phase during cooling and increases supersaturated solute atoms. However, Baba(1967)reported the strength of an Al-6%Zn-1.8%Mg(mass%) alloy without additional elements quenched by very slow cooling (15°C/min) was 96% of that quenched by WQ. Furthermore,the age hardening at room temperature (RT) occurs after annealing at 410°C followed by furnace cooling (FC, 0.5ºC/min or less)in these alloys. Therefore, the process of annealing at 410 to 430°C for 120 min followed by AC, and reheating at 230°C for 240 min, then cooling is recommended in the specifications (Japan Aluminum Association, 2011). Matsuda and Yoshida(1996)also recommended annealing at 300°C for Al-Zn-Mg alloy extruded products to inhibit age hardening at RT by precipitating the solute atoms and decreasing them in the matrix. It has been considered that the higher the content of excess quenched-in vacancy becomes by WQ, the higher aging rate at RT is obtained. Therefore,it is theoretically and commercially important to clarify the reason why the age hardening occurs relatively quickly in almost no excess quenched-in vacancies such as the FC, and why the same strength as the WQ can be obtained in the FC"

The past twenty to thirty years have seen unprecedented research activity aimed at understanding the performance of flotation froths. In 1990, Finch and Dobby coined the term froth recovery factor, Rr, to represent the efficiency of the froth in delivering particles from the pulp-froth interface to the concentrate. Originally defined for flotation columns, Rr has also been found useful in modeling mechanical flotation cells, and a number of techniques, based on quite different approaches, have been developed for measuring the froth recovery in industrial flotation cells. None of these techniques is universally successful. This paper reviews the concept of the froth recovery factor, and the basis of each of the techniques that have been proposed to measure Rr, and examines the reasons for this parameter being so difficult to pin down. From the title of this chapter the reader could expect an attempt to outline the anticipated shape of things to come, mineralwise. We have no crystal ball and if we possessed one we could claim no expertness in its use. In the first place no one can tell the future status of man. No one has any way of knowing to what extent peace will prevail, nor to what extent changes may occur in national sovereignties or forms of government or in international relationships. So future man is an uncertainty. Nor can we predict new developments that may result in significant changes in man's status or in the mineral industry or both. If, for example, this chapter had been written in the middle 1930's, nearly everything that has happened since in the field of atomic energy would have been missed. Yet what a vast change this has made in the status of man! Also the changes in the mineral industry have been important. A writer would have been bold indeed had he prophesied that uranium would play such an important role. But we need not confine our foggy vision to the atomic energy field. The steep rise in the use of aluminum, titanium, and germanium reflects the unpredictable in what may be thought of as the more normal pursuits. This should not discourage one from using the past and currently observable trends as bases for limited predictions. To do this, however, it is desirable to make certain assumptions about man's status without even a pretense that these assumptions have a high probability of fulfillment: 1. Only minor changes will occur in the geographical boundaries of the nations of the world. 2. World War III will not take place in the near future. 3. As a consequence of (2), man will not destroy himself by wanton use of atomic weapons. 4. Disarmament will take place, if at all, gradually rather than all at one time. Under the above assumptions the world will enjoy a period of relative peace even though the status may be one of an armed truce. The assump-

In November 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines sponsored a 2-day conference to stimulate thinking and discussion about changing materials technologies and implications for the Government's materials information programs. On the first day of the conference, speakers provided overviews of developments occurring in each of the major materials groups. Emerging technological developments, applications, economic and national defense significance, intermaterial competition, and potential market growth in advanced plastics, polymer composites, ceramics, metals, and electronic materials were described. In general, the speakers forecast advanced materials market growth rates in excess of overall gross national product (GNP) though high costs will tend to limit growth outside of aerospace, defense, electronics, medical equipment, and other typically high value-added businesses. On the second day, a wide range of speakers representing several facets of the materials community described how advances in materials technology are creating a need for new types of data, statistics, information, and analysis. Reflecting the speakers' broad range of organizational, professional, and personal perspectives, an array of information needs was identified. Most requirements, however, seemed to fall into one of five major categories: Federal materials research activities, material standards, market and economic information, health and safety, and public policy.

A large wedge failure had occurred in the study area which was under construction. Therefore, in order to analyze the potential instability for this rock slope, the authors conducted numerical analysis with DEM and then the behaviour of rock mass was analysed after appropriate reinforce-ments were applied. (Canal Zone Meeting , October , 1910.) INTRODUCTION. IT is a curious fact that while in our Transactions there are papers dealing with mining-districts in all parts of the world, in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia, there is not one which describes the mining possibilities of Nicaragua; our near neighbor. To be most interested in distant objects, like the moon, .and to neglect what lies at our feet, appears to be a trait of human nature. The neglect of Nicaragua is not confined to the American Institute of Mining Engineers. In no other transactions am I :able to find papers dealing with mining in Nicaragua, some parts of which are as much in need of discovery and research as the North Pole.. I hope this paper will be the precursor of many others to be printed in our Transactions, dealing not only with the mining possibilities of Nicaragua, but with the whole of Central America, where there are vast areas awaiting skill and capital for their development. Much of this capital and skill should come from the United States in the future, although it is probable that European capitalists, when they appreciate fully the possibilities, will investigate more and more the mining-resources of Nicaragua and other Central American republics. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of Nicaragua showing the principal mining-districts. II. HISTORY. Mining in Nicaragua did not begin yesterday. It was commenced by civilized man when the Spanish conquerors penetrated into the interior and forced the natives to procure the precious metal for them.
