The Cape Breton Development Corporation is a federally owned Crown corporation in Canada that operates two coal mines the Prince and Phalen Colliery in the Province of Nova Scotia. Retreat longwall mining was first introduced to the shallower workings (I 80m) of Prince Colliery in the early 1980's. Phalen Colliery started longwall retreating in 1987 and since that time has extracted twelve panels. In 1993 there had been a total of eight longwalls varying in widths from 140-230m mined in Phalen Colliery that is on the Phalen Seam. Up to this point there were only minor ground control problems on the faces except for one of the earlier longwalls that was mining a split seam. There is some interaction on Phalen workings from remnant structures in the overlying Lingan and No. 26 Collieries which worked the Harbour Seam. Induced abutments loads along pillar edges have been observed and resulted in poor face conditions when mining the Phalen Seam. The ninth panel, 6 East was the first panel to suffer a major roof fall from the First Major Weighting. This was also the first panel to undermine a paleo sandstone river channel named the Lower Sandstone Unit (LSU). For the first time in Phalen's history subsequent longwalls began to experience periodic weighting events. The 6 East panel suffered a number of periodic weightings and on two occasions had to use foam cement to fill the cavities that resulted. On the next east side panel, 7 East, there were numerous periodic weighting events, but interestingly there was no significant First Major Weighting. 7 East was the first 260m wide panel and all others were 230m or less. This longwall was 3,400m long and began producing in December of 1994 and was still cutting coal in May of 1997. There were five significant roof fall events on this panel, three of which required foam cement to fill the cavities. Of these three the interruption to production varied from four days to seven months. There were definite precursors to each of the weightings including: 1) an increase in audible noise (termed bumping) on the face, 2) supports went rapidly into yield, 3) roof convergence increased, 4) water percolated from the face roof strata, and 5) severe spalling of the coal occurred resulting in increased tip to face distance. Longwall face weightings are a result of geomechanical factors and cannot be avoided However, the loss of roof control is a different matter and highly subjective to operational procedures. The causes of weightings, their magnitude and impact on the mining at Phalen have been investigated. The following factors have been identified as relevant to these occurrences. 1. The influence of pillars in the overlying Harbour Seam workings. 2. Location of the LSU relative to the Phalen Seam. 3. Thickness of the LSU. 4. Pressure arch effect from the adjacent gobs. 5. Poor operational practices on the longwall including: a) slow rate of retreat; b) inadequate supply of pump pressure to the hydraulic supports; c) premature yielding of the yield valves; and d) poor face alignment practices. This paper will review the events that took place on the 7 East longwall and show that the Lower Sandstone Unit is the primary cause of the weightings. However, other factors contributed to the loss of roof control and the formation of the roof cavities.

"Convergence of roof and floor in underground mine openings is a common occurrence. This convergence not only adversely affects the ability of workers, equipment and supplies to travel through the mine, it also reduces the effectiveness of the mine ventilation system, which is essential for the dilution of methane gas and airborne respirable dust. While installing secondary standing supports to control floor and roof convergence, such supports, by nature, partially obstruct a portion of the airway. These added obstructions inhibit the ability of the ventilation system to operate as efficiently as it could by increasing the resistance in and reducing the cross-sectional area of the airway.This study introduces and demonstrates the benefits of The Eye CAN™ standing roof support, which controls floor and roof convergence and is less obstructive to air flow than conventional wooden cribs. Laboratory findings show that the normal resistance of a supported lined airway is reduced by using this new product from Burrell Mining Products, Inc., while providing the same roof support characteristics of an established product-The CAN®. Load vs. displacement curves generated from laboratory tests demonstrated that this new product behaves with the same roof support characteristics as others in The CAN product family. Ventilation data gathered from a simulated mine entry was then used for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. The CFD analysis showed an improvement with The Eye CAN versus other accepted forms of standing roof support.This proof-of-concept study suggests that, when using this new product made by Burrell Mining Products, Inc., not only will the convergence from the roof and floor be controlled, but airway resistance will also be reduced.INTRODUCTIONOne of the basic elements of underground mining is the necessity to support the mine roof. It is well-known that easier reserves have been mined so that today's underground mines present challenging conditions. Factors influencing roof support decisions include mine depth, mining method, overburden composition, and agency regulations. Mining engineers, therefore, have to balance three objectives: safety, engineering, and cost. While safety is obviously paramount, and engineering often complements safety, the cost effectiveness of any product, method, or device warrants additional consideration in today's harsh business climate. Avenues for adaptation and improvement are found at the intersection of the three objectives."

"Geomechanical and geotechnical characteristics of coal seam are important parameters that directly affect the cavability of top coal in the longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) method. The impact of these parameters such as coal strength, coal deformation modulus, coal discontinuities and top-coal thickness on cavability has not been fully understood in previous numerical analyses. The limitation and selection of the numerical modelling codes were two of the main reasons. In this paper, detailed caving simulations are performed using a 2D distinct element method (DEM) code, UDEC, to study the effect of various critical parameters on top-coal cavability. The numerical analysis evidently shows that the coal deformation modulus, coal discontinuities, and top-coal thickness have considerable influences on cavability. Coal strength is also a factor but to a lesser extent. The results presented in this paper contribute to the understanding of top-coal cavability in different mining environments and facilitate the development of an advanced cavability evaluation criterion. INTRODUCTION The longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) method was originally developed in the 1950s in the former Soviet Union and France (Tien, 1998). The method was nearly abandoned in Europe after the mid-1980s; however, it has been significantly improved and widely applied in China since the late 1980s. A conceptual model of the LTCC method is shown in Figure 1 in which a thick coal seam is divided into two sections including the lower or cutting section, and the upper or top coal section. The lower section of coal seam is mined by conventional longwall method. Meanwhile, the upper section is recovered by caving through the face support. The LTCC method is considered to be the most viable option for mining general thick seams. The Bureau of Mines has developed a portable, lightweight device for determining the integrity of resin-grouted roof bolts. The instrument functions by sending a known pulse of ulstrasonic energy into the bolt and comparing the amount of energy reflected hack with the original measured pulse. Where the bolt is properly bonded or coupled with the rock, the energy passes through the bolt-resin-rock interface and dissipates in the rock. Where the bolt is not properly coupled, the energy is reflected back along the bolt to the instrument. The ratio of reflected energy to the pulse approximates the fraction of the bolt's surface that is improperly bonded. The instrument is easy to use. The operator holds the sensor head of the device firmly over the head of the bolt to be tested, causing the pulse of ultrasonic energy to be imparted to the bolt. The device then listens for reflected energy. This cycle is repeated about 200 times per second until an evaluation of the bolt installation is made and indicated by colored lights in the display window. Bolts having 50% or less of their surface bonded are considered had and cause a red light to he illuminated. Bolts with 50% to 75% of their surface bonded cause a yellow light to be lit and are considered marginal. Bolts having more than 75% of their surface bonded are considered good and cause a green light to be lit. The indicator lamp remains on for about 4 seconds and then goes off, indicating that the instrument is ready for another test.

Much benefit can be achieved by a mining company and a manufacturer if both parties can communicate effectively with each other and assist in product development; mutually beneficial ideas and products will develop. This communication can best be achieved if both parties have the opportunity of having on their respective staffs, specialists whose function is to improve the use of products used in mine development. Although a great wealth of roof control knowledge has long existed among mine operators, until recently there was not an abundance of joint development of roof control material by manufacturers and mine operators. This was perhaps due, in past lean years, to the preoccupation of mine management with other overwhelming problems that arise in mining. Manage¬ment had little time for the lengthy process of product development. Until recently, only a few of the largest mining companies had fulltime personnel devoted to roof control. A bolt manufacturer who is invited to work with an operator's roof control people in developing new material is lucky indeed in that he learns what is wanted and he acquires the benefit of the operator's knowledge and experience. He has only to come up with a satisfactory product at an acceptable price - which is not always easy: The development of new products is usually costly and time consuming, and many new products fall by the wayside. In the case of point anchors, however, this product is here to stay. The advantage of point anchors over mechanical anchors is now a proven fact. This advantage is due to less bleed off and higher ultimate load capacity of the resin point anchors. Point anchored bolts have proven to be superior to fully grouted bolts in many areas. We at Birmingham Bolt Company are fortunate in that we have been involved in joint efforts to develop point anchors with several coal companies from whom excellent advice and direction was received. It is appropriate to mention before continuing that the use of point anchors began in the 1960's in Europe and became widespread only recently in the United States. They fall in two categories, point anchors and combination point anchors. These categories have been defined by the Bureau of Mines as follows: (1) point anchors having 24" of grouted length and (2) combination anchors having 24" or more of grouted length. In the present nomenclature, all are anchored with resin or some sort of cementing compound between the rebar or tensioned element and the wall of the hole. The latest development includes an expansion shell as well as rebar, the purpose of the expansion shell being to facilitate installation without the delay necessary in use of types that require a waiting periond for setting of the resin before tightening. Mine planning for a new reserve is based on information obtained from exploratory coreholes. A critical component of an exploration program is the geotechnical evaluation. Poor assumptions about roof conditions greatly add to the risks of mining. Rock mechanics testing is central to a geotechnical exploration program. Typically, 3 to 5 uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests are made to characterize a particular roof unit at a given corehole. The average (mean) of these tests is taken as "The UCS" for that location. Isopach contour maps are then used to show spatial trends in roof strength. Two issues are raised by this traditional approach. The first is due to the large variability in UCS values that is typical even within a single unit from a single hole. The average UCS might be higher at Corehole A than it is at Corehole B, but the difference may not be statistically significant. The second issue is whether widely spaced coreholes can identify valid spatial trends in rock strength. The answer depends upon whether rock strength changes over distances that are longer or shorter than the corehole spacing. This is a classical geostatistical problem. While geostatics have been used to investigate many coal quality parameters, they have seldom been used to evaluate rock strength. This paper describes an extensive investigation of these issues conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in collaboration with Peabody Energy. The study employed the Peabody Rock Mechanics Data Base which contains more than 10,000 individual test results. Data from four important roof units were subjected to statistical analysis: ? Brereton Limestone above the Herrin 6 seam (Illinois) ? Turner Mine Shale above the No. 9 Seam (Kentucky) ? Sandstone above the Eagle Coal (West Virginia) ? Shale above the Eagle Coal (West Virginia) The study did not find significant spatial trends in rock strength in any of the cases. Perhaps there are none, or perhaps the exploration coreholes were just too far apart to see them. These results have valuable implications for the design of geotechnical exploration programs.

The success of the Birmingham roof truss (Figure 1) in supporting some difficult roof conditions, particularly in the Illinois coal basin, has given impetus to the development of a number of alternate schemes. These schemes attempt to alleviate two major problems with the Birming-ham truss, namely, the time required for installation and the cost of material. Because of the difficulty of drilling angled holes and the number of different pieces of hardware which must be handled manually, most operators have been unable to install Birmingham trusses in the cycle and have had to schedule truss crews during the maintenance shift or whenever they would not impede production. Due to this delay the truss has traditionally been viewed as a supplemental form of roof support. In fact, the truss might qualify as primary support and replace at least two bolts if it could he installed in the cycle (and MSHA would accept it as an alternate in the roof plan.) [ ] Figure 1. The Birmingham truss. Two attempts to deal with the first difficulty have sought to streamline the truss hardware while preserving the essential character of the Birmingham truss. One of these, by Peabody Coal, is reported elsewhere in these proceedings by C. Bollier. Another is a contract issued by the Bureau of Mines to Bendix Corporation for the development of a machine, particularly suited for use in low coal, which will automate many of the operations currently executed manually. This machine is expected to be ready for field testing by fall of 1982. Once in place, a truss installed by either of these schemes will interact with the roof in the same way as a conventional Birmingham truss. An alternate approach has been proposed by several different manufacturers independently. Although the hardware details differ. the essential idea consists of two angle bolts, the heads of which are connected by a horizontal chord tightened to some pre-determined tension. Figure 2 shows the generalized concept and does not depict any one of the four systems proposed. The advantage of this scheme is that the angle bolts can be installed and tightened in the cycle, and as bolts, immediately satisfy the roof control plan. The horizontal chord can be added later to achieve almost any initial desired roof loading, the limits of which are defined below this scheme is referred to here as the angle-bolt truss. Because of a fundamental difference in the way in which load is transferred between chords, this design does not interact with the roof under subsequent loading in the same manner as a Birmingham truss. The purpose of this paper is to examine this fundamental difference and its consequences. [ ]

One of the major difficulties in the proper characterization of rocks surrounding excavations is the lack of data. The existing method for strength determination requires core drilling for sample collection, which, when performed from the surface is costly, and when performed underground, in addition to its cost, interferes with the mine operations. I-landling samples tested in the laboratory is troublesome and also influences the obtained results. Over several years. the author has been interested in developing a method of in situ strength determination that could rapidly generate strength data at low cost without a negative effect on mining activities. The recently developed borehole penetrometer is an improved version of the initial design ( 3 inches in diameter), which was used mainly for strength determination of coal pillars. The new penetrometer has been designed to work in 1.5 inch diameter holes. Such holes can be drilled at low cost with either hand held drilling machines or roof bolters. eliminating limitations of the previous system and opening the possibility of broad application. Strength testing of roof rock around longwall pillars is an example of an obvious benefit when designing secondary roof support. In the paper are given the principles of work of the apparatus and examples of the obtained strength data.

This paper presents a method of measuring field power consumption of shearers and deriving specific energy consumption versus shearer haulage speed performance curves. A description of a computer program which simulates the cutting action of a shearer drum is presented. A comparison between the field specific energy curves and the computer simulation results is made. The simulation results compare well with the field data where all the coal seam is being cut by the shearer. The computer simulation results give hack-calculated field pick force cutting characteristics, which allow the performance of the shearer to be predicted for other operating conditions, e.g. effect of changes to pick lacing, effect of changing the drum rotational speed, allows the calculation of power requirements for a particular production rate.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method and device designed to detect lose rock material in underground mines. The technology is designed to be an aid to mine workers in detecting hazardous roof conditions in underground mines which can complement or replace the traditional roof sounding techniques where the miner relies on experience to determine whether rock conditions are sound. The leading cause of accidents and fatalities in underground mines is falls of lose rock pieces or rock slabs from the mine roof. The device is an electronic roof sounding device that acoustically determines the integrity of mine rock. In previous research the Bureau of Mines found that loose rock, when impacted, vibrates at a much lower frequency than intact rock material. A major problem in determining rock stability using this technique has been the repeatability of the matt signal. This difficulty baa been greatly reduced in the current design by measuring the power spectra contained in two separate frequency bands of the signal produced by striking the rock in question. The ratio of the energy contained in each band is computed. This process minimizes any striking force differences, producing accurate, repeatable results for solid rock as well as loose, drummy material. The prototype has been successfully- tested in a variety of underground environments including coal, uranium, molybdenum, silver and salt. The technology has been investigated by the U.S. Mine Health and Safety Administration and the Department of Energy for use in detecting detached tunnel lining areas in nuclear repositories. The paper will discuss the technique, applicable results, and future applications.

Sandstone paleo-channels encountered during coal mining operation can significantly slow down the advance in mining, and often completely shut-down coal mine production, with consequent extensive economic losses to the mine operator. Definition of the encountered channel usually involves intensive drilling; vertically from the surface and/or horizontally from underground vantage points. Coal operators with limited resources often resort to exploration by extending mine faces toward the channel. Both drilling and underground mining exploration are prohibitively expensive and usually provide only partial information about the location, size and shape of the sandstone channel. A low cost alternative which can also provide a more comprehensive picture of the channel is the application of Underground High Resolution Seismic Methods (UHRSM) developed and successfully tested by GECOH Exploration. UHRSM applies surface seismic reflection technology rotated as needed (usually 90 degrees) to accommodate the faces of the exposed channel, coal rib, or coal in front of the inclusion (sandstone channel, etc.). This entails placing high frequency seismic sources and geophones horizontally across these exposed faces. Refraction and reflection events from the front and back of the channel are isolated, analyzed and inverted, to calculate the channel's location and geometry. This paper presents a summary of the geophysical exploration technique and two case history examples where it was applied. In the first case, the accuracy of the technique was verified through subsequent mining. Mining is yet to commence in the second case. Both cases were applied to room-and-pillar nines where the irregular rib lines significantly extended the data processing effort. This suggests that UHRSM will find the easiest application when used along straight rib lines, but that is not a requisite to the application. The UHRSM should find ready application in longwall mining to delineate sandstone channels and other non-coal inclusions in the middle of the panels or ahead of the gate road faces.

This report describes the development of an equation for predicting the crushing strength of 2-inch (5.08-cm) cubes of coal from point load tests made on irregular lumps. The equation was developed from point load and cube crushing strength tests performed on coal samples from six Western U.S. coal seams. For the six coals tested, the means of the point loads [(P)] in kg at failure were approximately proportional to the deans it the distances [(V)], in cm between the platen points for lumps in the 2 to 10-cm size ramie. This finding is at variance with results of tests on other rock types reported in the literature, which tend to show that P is proportional to D2 , as is normally assumed (in theoretical grounds. [The average crushing strength of a 2-inch (5.08 cu) cane for each type of coal was plotted against the log 10 of the slope of the P vs D plots, AP/AID . A straight line was fitted to these plots. The equation of the fitted line is cr = 1.72 x 10 4 10gK -2.10 x 10 4, where Cr is re estimated 2-inch (5. 08-cu,) cube crushing strength of the coal in psi and K is the scope of the straight line fitted to a plat of P v D for the same coal.]

Much data and experience has been accumulated, especially in the last 5 or 6 years, to show that modern roof trusses, both of the Birmingham type and the bolt-and-channel type, perform well to support certain kinds of coal mine roof. For some time now, roof trusses of the Birmingham type have been effective in controlling thick shale roof, which tends to sag and fall over a period of about eight weeks. These falls leave dame-shaped cavities which are reminiscent of the pressure arch theory of roof failure. Lately there has also been significant interest in supporting some longwall panel entries with channel and-bolt systems. These systems utilize two vertical center bolts and two 45 degree end bolts through a heavy gage channel. Both types of truss systems have long bolts, which require 8 to 9 Foot holes on a 45 degree angle, and point anchor resin bolts, which utilize a 2 or 3 foot rebar grouted in a thin annulus of polyester resin. Consequently, many coal mining people have been impressed with the very good anchorage characteristics and tensionability features of these systems. However, the same people have been proportionately dismayed to find that very often the most difficult part of introducing a trussing program to a mine is deciding on the machine specifications which determine the truss installation rate. The purpose of this paper is to indicate aspects of truss bolter design and use which are not shared by roofbolter design and its vertical pattern of bolts. Of the two types of drill units conventionally accepted, arm feed units and mast units, only one 15 judged suitable. While the arm feed unit offers low collapsed height with a long drill feed length, a great attribute for low seam use, it has not lent itself to being rolled over to a 45 degree angle. One reason for this inability is that many items which are conventionally mounted on the arm feed unit cannot be allowed to rotate with the unit. These items include drilling controls, tool Cray, lights, canopy or safety post, panic bar, and stab jack(s). If these items were independent of the arm feed drilling unit, they would have to be out of the way of the boom arms, links, and feed cylinder as the unit moves. To ease this problem, the arm feed unit can be made very short and even mounted across the machine. However, the resulting short feed length is undesirable. Several short drill steel extensions are required to drill a relatively long hole, making this procedure time-consuming as well as increasing the likelihood of drilling a crooked hole. Another reason for abandonment of the arm feed unit is that a very stiff drill guide (or "centralizer") is required to start the hole. Using the mast tilt control, the roof bolter operator will force the bit against the roof and will rotate the bit without feeding to cut sideways into the roof to form a hole face. Omission of this step often results in the skidding of the bit toward the rib. To date, no such sturdy drill guide has been designed for an arm feed drill unit. The mast style unit has been the most successful design for angle drilling. It is easily rolled over to a 45 degree angle or to 90 degrees and, on single head models, often has been made to roll through 180 degrees. The mast style is compact, in plain view and is easily fitted with heavy duty manual or hydraulically operated drill guides. It can be mounted directly on a machine chassis, or onto a swinging boom, or onto a slider arrangement in a broad variety of configurations which will accommodate controls, tool trays, stab and roof support jacks, lights, canopies, and panic bars. The only significant difficulty with mast drilling units occurs in lower mining heights when desirable low mast height is accompanied by undesirable short feed length. While the lead extension in the drill string can be as large as the mining height will allow, a short feed length will permit only the use of shorter middle extensions and drivers, and perhaps will. require the use of two different length wrenches. The associated problem is the relatively short distance from the drillhead to the drillguide. This distance is further shortened when raising the drillhead to get the bit to the roof. One might keep longer lead extensions on the machine; drill a vertical pocket for the bit, starting the angle hole at this pocket; or modify the mast. If the mast is made so that the distance from the drillhead to the drillguide remains constant while the mast extends, after which the drillhead travels up the mast, the shorter mast can be made to start the hole more easily. However, short teed length will still result in longer drilling time. It is obvious from these points that a proper choice of mast is simply the highest one which will be moved easily in the given mining height. This, of course, goes against the grain of most experienced coal mining people who realize that a relatively small decrease in mining height can create a problem correctable only with the purchase and installation of shorter masts. Currently longwall coal mining operations require at least 3 entries on both the headgate and tailgate ends because of ventilation and safety requirements. Driving of entries, however, is a slow and costly process. Often it is a bottleneck in longwall development. Single entry gateroads are permitted in Europe and commonly used there. This study entailed ascertaining the feasibility of using a single entry in the United States, without sacrificing safety. This design was conducted for an operating longwall mine in the Black Warrior coalfield in Alabama, An understanding of rock loads and consequent support requirements is prerequisite to the design and successful demonstration of the single entry system. Efforts in this regard were directed at determining center (packwall) support requirements for various single entry widths. Critical to the analysis is knowledge of the nature and extent of side abutment stresses. In collecting geological and geotechnical information relating to the stability of the single entry, Engineers International, Inc. engaged in the following: ? Examination and inspection of the single entry demonstration at the Sunnyside Mine in Utah. Severe ground conditions and unacceptable levels of entry closure were experienced there prior to the tailgate phase. Observations at the mine presented a clear perspective on possible ground control problems for future single entry designs. ? Reconnaissance inspection and classification of roof rock conditions. ? Detailed mapping of roof structure in the areas to be instrumented. ? Installation of convergence stations in the longwall headgate to monitor roof movement during mining. ? Measurement of side abutment stresses in a yield pillar in the area of the convergence measurements. ? Measurements of coal fracture distribution by the detail area method. ? Rock properties determinations of roof, coal, and floor rocks; samples obtained by core drilling. ? Determination of floor bearing capacity by in-situ testing.

Longwall mining is one of the most widely practiced underground coal mining method. The behavior of the longwall gob is very critical in the understanding of the complex ground response to longwall mining. In the limited data available, the values of gob moduli used in numerical modeling ranged from 1,000 psi to over 300,000 psi. Such a wide variation in moduli would greatly affect the results of the numerical analysis. A better understanding of the behavior of the gob will allow numerical models to be more accurate for simulating longwall mining conditions. In this study, a gob model based on the Terzaghi's model was incorporated into the comprehensive finite element package, ABAQUS, to simulate the loading behavior of longwali gob material. A case study was used to verify the proposed gob model.

Roof falls are the major cause of fatalities in the, coal mining industry and the prevention of roof failure is a major concern of mine management. Many ground failures observed underground are associated with geological discontinuities such as fractures, faults, clay veins and sandstone channels inherent in the earth's crust (Rinkenberger, 1977). To properly design a mine requires an advance knowledge of such geologic discontinuities and this is not always available from exploration boreholes. The use of remote sensing for mine planning is a relatively new development, and is at present being used primarily by the Roof Control Support Branches of the Mane Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in Denver and Pittsburgh. However, technical advances, coupled with public access to previously unavailable photographic products, make remote sensing a useful aid in the difficult process of mine planning (Jansky and McCabe, 1979). Remote sensing techniques are being used to predict the location of geological features in advance of mining which influence roof conditions. The features appear on photographic images as linears, which are plotted on a mine map and serve as a planning tool for mine management. Also, during development of entries toward a linear, mining personnel will be on alert for signs of unstable roof conditions which might normally go undetected. Preventive action can then be taken before a fall occurs. A confusing aspect in remote sensing, analyses is terminology such as linear, lineament, fracture trace and joint. In this report the term "linear" refers to a line-like appearance on an aerial photograph or satellite imagery which signifies a naturally occurring geologic feature no the earth's surface. The objective of this paper is to describe the use of remote sensing techniques as an aid in predicting geological discontinuities which might produce hazardous roof conditions to a mine operating in the Pocahontas No. 4 Seam in southern West Virginia. Mine projections and roof control plans will he developed based on this and other available information such as data from cored drill holes.

The 3-D numerical modeling using ABAQUS is performed to analyze the mechanisms of the tensioned bolts by taking into considerations excavation sequence, pre-tension, bedding planes and in-situ horizontal stresses. The effect of the pre-tension and the mechanisms of the tensioned bolts are analyzed based on the results from the modeling. Based on field observations, the failure modes for the tensioned bolted strata are classified by their causes and failure mechanisms. The support design consideration for each failure mode is given. Finally, a new design approach is proposed to do the tensioned bolting design using numerical method.

Tower Colliery is a longwall mine operated by BHP Coal Illawarra Collieries, Southwest of Sydney, Australia It mines the Bulli Seam at a depth of approximately 450m. The surface topography overlying the mine consists of several steep-sided river gorges, up to 68m in depth, which run at oblique angles across a sloping terrain Apart from some light rural development, the surface land is essentially natural bushland, but is traversed by a major freeway. This crosses one of the gorges on twin, six-span, box-girder bridges, with bridge piers up to 55m in height. Consequently, a major surface subsidence monitoring program has been in place for several years now, including intensive conventional, GPS and E DM surveying, plus real-time monitoring of critical components of the bridge structure. Although the bridge and freeway are outside the conventional angle of draw' subsidence influence criteria, and have seen only negligible vertical deformation as a result of mining, there has been widespread evidence of regional horizontal deformation of the land surface, large distances away from the mining area The effect at the bridge has been well within acceptable tolerances, primarily because of the regional nature of the movements, with very little differential movement observed at the bridge piers Gorge closure and evidence of large headlands of land moving `en masse' have been observed. Horizontal movements of hundreds of millimetres have been recorded in some locations where gorge closure has been monitored. Possible explanations of these movements include one or a combination of mechanisms such as pre-mining stress relaxation. valley notch effects, valley bulging, regional joint patterns, movement toward active goaf areas, vertical gorge shearing' and shear failure of horizontal bedding planes below the surface This paper presents a case study of the regional horizontal ?subsidence displacements? measured during mining. and a discussion of the possible explanations for these phenomena

Marrowbone Development Company operates a large drift mining complex in the central Appalachian coal field. In 1997, five continuous miner supersections produced close to 9 million tons of raw plant feed. All production is from the Coalburg seam, a 5 to 10 ft thick coal seam with multiple coal benches and shale binders. The immediate roof lithologies consist of laminated shales, sandstones, or a mixture of sandstones and shales. The mine area is bisected by the regional Warfield anticline and associated Warfield fault. Mining conditions vary considerably due to frequent changes in seam and roof geology. The following geological categories can be distinguished: 1) presence of coal riders in the immediate shale roof, 2) excessive seam slopes around the Warfield fault, 3) splay faults associated with the Warfield fault, 4) zones of abundant slickensides, 5) abrupt roof lithology changes (sandstone - shale), 6) splitting and merging of different benches of the Coalburg seam, 7) sandstone washouts, 8) excessive roof dilution, 9) pillar sizing problems due to seam anomalies (soft fireclay binders). Several examples of these features are discussed in detail. Also, their relationship to roof fall occurrences is evaluated. Early recognition of potentially adverse geological conditions is of prime importance for the economic viability of the mining plans. Detailed core drilling in advance of the mining faces and coordination of the core data with underground mapping are the main forecasting tools.

The unpredictable massive collapse of roof in openings developed under apparently safe and stable roof conditions in coal mines of the United States has been of much concern for many years. One type of massive caving phenomenon is often attributed to cutter roof, a failure that initiates at one and/or both upper corners of an entry and propagates nearly vertically resulting in overall failure with little or no warning. This paper reviews current methods being used to control cutter roof and suggests new alternatives. The impact of basic parameters that include mine geometry, overburden geology, rock properties, and in situ stress conditions is discussed in the context of their relationship to this problem. The effects of various stress control measures are investigated with model analysis to gain insight into means of reducing the high level of stress known to exist at the entry corners of a West Virginia coal mine prone to cutter roof. The results are presented in the paper and the feasibility of their practical implementation is discussed.
