Thunder Basin Coal Company's Black Thunder Mine is located 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Gillette, Wyoming in the Powder River Basin. Surface coal mining operations began in 1977. The Black Thunder Mine has been North America's largest producing coal mine for over 5 years. Production in 1988 totaled 22.6 million mt (24.9 million st) of sub-bituminous coal. Thunder Basin Coal Company is a subsidiary of Atlantic Richfield Company. The mine began as a truck-shovel stripping and mining operation. Haul trucks of 154 mt (170 st) capacity were part of the original fleet. In 1985, 218 mt (240 st) capacity trucks were introduced to the fleet. In 1988 a dragline was added for stripping. A single, primary/ secondary crushing stream feeds either a slot storage facility or dual silos. Three loading points are situated over two rail loops serviced by the Burlington Northern and Chicago North-western Railways. A Near Pit Crushing and Conveying system is currently under construction. It is expected to be completed during the fourth quarter of 1989. During the past 10 years, the conceptual crushing/conveying design has changed several times as technology and commodity markets have changed. The system under construction will have a capacity of 4700 mtph (5200 stph). The overland belt will be 3570 m (11,700 ft) long and 1800 mm (72 in.) wide. The belt speed will be 300 meters per minute (1000 fpm). Two separate crushing streams will feed the overland belt. Each stream will be comprised of a dump hopper at reclaim surface elevation, a drag feeder, a two-stage triple-roll crusher, and an incline conveyor of 2700 mtph (3000 stph) capacity. This article will describe the different concepts and factors that have resulted in the system design now under construction.

This paper reviews the technical advice available to support companies in the delivery of social aspects of sustainable development. It will draw on diverse experience from the sparsely populated plains of the Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, to the densely populated villages of the Carpathian Mountains in Slovakia. It will review basic requirements for the consideration of social issues, as well as guidance on international best practice. It will review: the legal basis; coverage; consideration of alternatives; scope; inclusive decision-making; indicator development; impact monitoring and evaluation. The paper will discuss the breadth and depth of social issues for consideration, including the realms of responsibility of a company in terms of social development in different operating environments. The extractive industries invest substantial amounts of money which typically dwarfs local development, health or education budgets. Capacity building for local authorities is not directly the role of the company, but when understood as a strategy for risk management, it can play a vital part of sustainable development that benefits the local community and reduces the risk of social problems impacting profits. The paper will argue that social impact assessment is most effective when the outcomes are in line with a company?s principles and support core business practices. It is important that social impact assessment is viewed as an integral part of project decision-making and moves away from mistrusted PR and unsustainable philanthropy toward partnership, which finds suitable and appropriate solutions delivering ?win-win? outcomes. While development should not be seen as a direct company objective, engaging with development actors to better understand the operating context can ensure that social investment complements existing initiatives. The paper will also present different mechanisms for engaging with local actors, as well as developing successful social programmes.

Miners working in underground mines where diesel equipment is used are exposed to exhaust pollutants. These include carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO,), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), hundreds of different hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter. Evidence from animal inhalation studies and limited epidemiological investigations have led the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to recommend that ‘... whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen ...’ NIOSH further stated that ‘... the excess cancer risk for workers exposed to diesel exhaust has not yet been quantified, but the probability of developing cancer should be decreased by minimizing exposure…’ The International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC) reached a similar conclusion, saying that ‘... diesel engine exhaust is probably carcinogenic to humans.’ Before these declarations, there was insufficient evidence concerning the carcinogenicity of diesel exhaust. It was well known, though, that diesel exhaust caused less severe problems, such as headache, eye irritation and unpleasant odors. In 1988, a milestone was reached in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulatory process. An advisory committee recommended a three-tier approach to regulating diesels used underground-approval of diesel equipment, safety and health. Diesel particulate matter may be specifically regulated. In addition, ambient air quality standards are being proposed that will establish a new standard for CO2 and lower the permissible exposure limits for the NO2, CO, SO2 and formaldehyde emissions that originate from diesels and other sources. Additional safety and emission restrictions are also proposed for diesel engines in coal mines. The goal of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) diesel engine research program is to minimize the health and safety problems associated with underground diesel equipment use. Part of this program is focused on reducing exhaust emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground mines.

Today's subject of discussion, "OSHA AND ITS PROBLEMS", must be covered in the time allotted with a slight tongue in cheek approach, for if one is to believe that the "problems of OSHA" can be covered in a twenty minute review, he, himself, has one of three problems: 1. He has residual combat fatigue left over from World War II. 2. He is an egomaniac. 3. He is afflicted with both of the above. Clearly, the difference between divinity and humanity lies in their work. All human endeavor is plagued by errors and omissions, and unless one would be so facetious as to equate bureaucracy with godliness, our government-sponsored ventures seem to receive more than their share of missive missles with which to combat the ills of our society. Coming from an industry known for its undertaking of gargantuan projects, I feel capable of looking at things from the big picture perspective. No one would deny that the massive influx of government, both in the monetary and supportive personnel roles, has accomplished much. But only we, as tunnel constructors, have moved countless mountains of muck, placed endless yards of concrete and engaged the public on numerous fronts and in spite of all, at times have even made a profit! Profit! What a dirty word in our society today. It makes one shrink back from the filthy overtones dripping with the cloying scent of decay. Never shall we judge the success of our government programs with such a slimy yardstick as profit. No, for that which has been conceived in the bowers of Camelot, the measure must be more elevating and inspiring. Something to bring a proud bearing to our efforts! Soil pollution, a very serious environmental problem, has been attracting considerable attention in recent years. It is now generally recognized that land as a component of the environment deserves the same attention and protection as water and air. This recognition has arisen perhaps because of increased incidents of land pollution, the scarcity of land, and increased awareness and concern about long-term effects of land pollution on terrestrial and aquatic eco-systems and on ground water quality. Contamination of land results from a wide range of human activities, including industrial discharge process, disposal of wastewater and agriculture. The environmental impact of exploration, production and refining of crude oil is a major concern in developed and developing countries. Because of the known adverse effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on soil ecology and fertility there has been growing interest in the development of efficient technologies for the remediation of contaminated land, with a view toward making it available for further use. Crude oil is a natural product and as such is susceptible to degradation by naturally occurring micro flora. Bioremediation has become an important method for the restoration of oil-polluted environments. A bench scale study was conducted to evaluate the bioremediation technique in treating soil contaminated with transformer oil. The steps involved in this study are: (1) Preparation of contaminated soil, (2) Extraction of PAHs and PCBs from contaminated soil, (3) Treatment of contaminated soil in slurry batch reactor, and (4) Analysis of PAHs and PCBs by gas chromatography technique. The performance of reactor was assessed by measuring parameters like COD, PAHs and PCBs. The study was con-ducted for six different pulp densities ranging from 20% to 40%. The maximum removal of PAHs and PCBs was observed for 20% pulp density.

Introduction The English word "sedimentation" is derived from the Latin verb "sedere" meaning to sink down. As a mineral processing unit operation, sedimenta¬tion has been defined as the separation of a suspension into a supernatant clear fluid and rather dense slurry containing a higher concentration of solid (Brown, G.G. 1960). Sedimen¬tation has been historically subdivided into thickening, which has the primary purpose of increasing the solids content of one of the thickener prod¬ucts relative to the feed stream, and clarification, which has the primary purpose of removing solids from the feed stream to produce a product essentially free from particu¬late matter. There is no absolutely precise distinction between these subdivisions and in certain applica¬tions, both objectives can be accom¬plished. Major Design Factors The capacity of conventional metal¬lurgical sedimentation devices is a function of slurry throughput and its attendant settling rate. Important factors, recognized by early investigators (Taggart, 1972), which influence the settling rate of a given metallur¬gical slurry include: Feed dilution or solids-liquid weight ratio Size and shape of the particulate solids Specific gravity differential between the solids and liquid phases Presence of electrolytes and/or flocculants Pulp viscosity Slurry temperature In addition to the foregoing histor¬ical factors, recent investigators have noted (Pearse, M.J., 1977) that other parameters which may have an influence upon settling rate and, thereby, thickener performance include: Method of flocculant application Particle size distribution Particulate wetting characteristics Feeding arrangements Rake speed and type Existence of convection currents Wind disturbance Evaporation All of the above factors should be examined and the effect upon thick¬ener performance brought about by manipulating the factor over the expected operating range should be determined if performance optimization is desired.

INTRODUCTION This paper is for the mining manager, generally meaning mine superintendent, chief engineer, and others who have control over the mine operation responsible for feeding the insatiable beast called the mill or processing plant. The author is not from mine management but from the field of technical mine engineering consulting. This fact illustrates the authors gross inadequacy to comment on this subject. On the other hand, the consulting profession allows visits to many mine operations, worldwide, supplying many different commodities. The common complaints and misunderstandings that have been heard worldwide will be shared within the following few paragraphs. In order to discuss optimization, one must first define it. There certainly will be many papers in the following sessions that claim to optimize something, or other, based on a technical definition of cost, efficiency, throughput or some other quantifiable basis. DEFINE OPTIMIZATION Actual optimization of an operation is not as easily achieved as most of us in the technical world would like. Borrowing terminology from the technical world, the boundary conditions and the optimization function are usually not well defined. The problems in many cases do not lend themselves to quantification. Typical management procedures are to establish goals or strategies that set the approach or general boundary conditions to the overall plant. Three simple cases are listed below as possible corporate strategies to optimization of a mine-process plant complex. 1) Maximized discounted cash flow 2) Minimized long term cost of product 3) Maximized resource utilization This list seems simple when presented in the above context, uncluttered by constraints such as market position, capital availability, or environmental limitations. The measurement of acoustic impedance at frequencies up to 6,400 Hz has been proposed as a diagnostic tool to yield more detailed information about lung condition. A three generation branching system of plastic Y-tubes has been constructed. The impedance of the branched system is measured by an impedance tube using the two-microphone technique. The impedance spectrum is used to calculate the reflection coefficient spectrum, which is converted to an impulse response by an inverse FFT. The area function is extracted from the impulse response by the Ware-Aki algorithm. Measurements of acoustic impedance of the branched system were made for several different end conditions of the eight terminal outlets. The outlets were either blocked with modeling clay, plastic packing material, or aluminum blocks or were unblocked. Six measurements were made of each configuration. In general, the more outlets blocked, the larger the shift to the right of the impedance magnitude peaks for frequencies above 3000 Hz. The impedance magnitude peaks for the plastic packing material were shifted in frequency to the right relative to the peaks of the other system terminations. The impedance magnitude peaks for the clay and aluminum system terminations were significantly different in magnitude but not shifted in frequency. The area functions at the end of the branched system were significantly different (a > 99%) for most of the end conditions. Area functions for the modeled branched lung systems between the end of the impedance tube and the termination outlets of the branched system were similar but distinctively different for the various end conditions. These results indicate that the two-microphone technique can sense small changes in the terminating end conditions of a rigid system of branched tubes and thus may sense impedance changes due to lung disease in the conducting airways. Many mining operations rely on bulkheads to provide a barrier between impounded water or slurry and active mine workings. However, bulkhead failures could cause and have caused catastrophic flooding that puts the underground workforce at risk. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 (NIOSH) in collaboration with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is conducting research to evaluate the adequacy of existing design practices for water and slurry bulkheads. A key component of this research effort is documentation of the performance history and design parameters for bulkheads installed in underground coal mines during the last 20+ years. This research is part of a larger effort to develop general design guidelines and procedures for constructing and maintaining bulkheads that will help to ensure their long-term structural integrity, while significantly reducing the inundation risk for miners. This paper presents the results of NIOSH’s research to identify state-of-the-art bulkhead designs, including design criteria, leakage monitoring systems, and emergency warning systems. Underground observations and evaluations of existing bulkheads suggest that the most important design factors influencing their performance are the interface of the bulkhead with the surrounding strata and the potential magnitude of the hydraulic pressure to which they may be subjected. When a bulkhead has failed, leakage has generally been through the surrounding strata or along the bulkhead/strata interface, with the failure potential along the interface increasing with hydraulic head. It was also determined that development of a monitoring program to ensure the long term structural integrity of bulkheads is an important safety consideration. Current monitoring procedures range from weekly visual inspections to constant monitoring via pressure transducers and fluid level indicators. Where possible, these devices are used in conjunction with a computer based mine monitoring system to alert mine personnel when an emergency condition exists at the bulkhead installation.

INTRODUCTION A two-dimensional approach for modeling narrow-vein deposits using the TECHBASE® software was implemented at Sunshine Mining for its use in the evaluation of mineral properties. This 2-D approach prevents the overestimation of high-grade tons typically associated with the use of fixed 3-D blocks and reduces the size of the model in computer memory. The method consists of constructing a two-dimensional model oriented along the average plane of the mineralized structure. This approach works well for single, multiple and intersecting veins with the condition that each vein is roughly planar with variation in dip or strike less than 30" in order to maintain a reasonable resolution in the process of projecting data onto a plane (Figure 1). Also, a precise identification of the hanging-wall and foot-wall location is critical in ensuring an accurate representation of the vein. By using various modeling techniques, the two-dimensional model estimates metal content, thickness, tonnage, economic and dilution parameters which will be ultimately used in the identification of minable reserves. The following is a generic description of the steps involved in modeling a steeply dipping vein. DATA ENTRY A typical project database consists of drillhole coordinates, survey information, assay data and any other quantitative or qualitative data. This database can be created inside the software or imported from any spreadsheet. TECHBASE® utilizes the concept of "fields" and "records" (columns and rows) for storing data. The use of "calculated fields" enables the user to expand on the manipulation of the database with minimum memory requirements. Another important feature of TECHBASE® is the ability to replicate the structure and format of the "tables" for its use in another project and the capability of running a series of repetitive tasks by means of batch and "runlog" files.

Power generation systems that promote energy security and environmental benefits are highly desired and pursued by a number of government and industry programs. Gasification of coal, other fossil fuels, or biomass has the technical promise of high efficiency and low or zero emission. Gasification for the purpose of electrical power generation has been researched, developed and demonstrated over the last 20 years, but for many reasons is not viewed as economically competitive. This paper describes a coal-based gasification technology well suited to mid and long-term goals of secure, environmentally clean energy. The technology should be adaptable for use with other carbon-based fuels including biomass and a full range of fossil fuels. The new zero emission gasification process is sponsored by ZECA Corporation, a continuation of the Zero Emission Coal Alliance (ZECA). ZECA has completed process design and engineering to assess the viability of a concept originated at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the creation of a business plan to define paths for advancing the technology toward a near-term goal pilot plant. The zero emission carbon (ZEC) technology includes hydrogasification, the production of hydrogen and the carbonation of lime with CO2. For the power generation base case, the hydrogen is used in high temperature coal compatible fuel cells to produce electricity and the carbonate is calcined to produce a pure stream of CO2for sequestration. This paper provides the status of work with the ZEC technology and the availability of crucial equipment, materials and required testing. Discussions are presented for future actions to accelerate the technology assessment, testing and demonstration of a ZEC plant. Brief remarks are provided on complementary projects dealing withCO2separation and gasification costs.

The need for ground support research in underground excavation has been well identified in recent years by many studies in the subject area (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). A typical conclusion from these reports (1, 2) is that the drill-and-blast (D & B) mining or the mechanical tunnel boring machine (TBM) methods are expected to be continued in use for the needs of tunneling in the immediate future. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) sponsored in June, 1970 advisory conferences on Hardrock and Soft Ground Tunneling (3,4). These two reports were based on the combined response received from approximately six hundred inquiries from 17 nations in the summer of 1969 and which concerned all aspects of present-day inadequacies of, and the needed improvements in the technology of tunneling. Some specific problem areas in ground support and tunnel linings were: 1) the ability to successfully predict rock loads that must be carried by the support system; and 2) inadequate methods for determining the load-carrying capacity of the various support systems. Therefore, the problem area is clearly defined by these two objectives: 1) To find means of predicting rock loads; and 2) To develop methodology for determining safe, efficient, and economical ground support design practices. Noting these research needs from a great number of sources, the United States Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC), acting as agent for the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), undertook contract research effort in these problem areas. Work by Jacobs Associates has studied a methodology for specification of temporary artificial support based on the dependent sequence of mining operations and prediction of various rock conditions in the pre-excavation stage. INTRODUCTION In the mining industry, timing in land acquisitions can be of the essence. In order to secure promising lands, deals are often negoti- ated quickly and evidenced by letters of intent containing what the parties feel are the essential terms of the deal. In some cases, a company is willing to acquire land only if it can lock up a number of promising properties, and so a "non-binding" letter of intent is used to formalize the essential terms, while leaving the company without legal liability. Later, the letters of intent will be sent to a lawyer to prepare a formal acquisition agreement. Many times, how- ever, especially in a land acquisition rush, another company will attempt to better the deal prior to the execution of that formal agreement, and the first company will be forced to rely on the initial letter of intent, only to find out to its chagrin that it has no deal In other cases, the company holding the desired property is another mining company, and the negotiation of an option or joint venture is the only way the first company can acquire an interest in the desired land. In order to make its offer more attractive, it may have to reveal confidential or proprietary information about the property or the surrounding lands. Here, too, letters of intent are often used to formalize the essential points of the agreement. Once again, however, prior to the execution of a formal joint venture agreement, the transaction may collapse and the letter of intent prove to be only that. The ultimate objective of the development work presented in the paper is to devise an appropriate method for relating powered support specification to geological conditions and mining practice, thus enabling the longwall method of coalmining to be successfully implemented throughout the varied coalfields of the world. The paper begins with a review of various methods previously used to determine support rating, each method being analysed with regard to its source, the logic and theory which constitute the method, and subsequent recommendations. An alternative approach is then proposed, the Powered supports being considered to be one of three foundations, sharing load with coal ahead of the faceline which acts as another foundation, and the waste behind the supports which acts as the remaining foundation. The load/deflection characteristics of the coal and waste, which in turn are related to geological conditions and mining practice, are shown to affect the load transfer on to and hence the specification of the powered support. In particular the characteristic of the waste foundation is shown to be affected by the caving mechanism, an alternative form to that mechanism accepted for British conditions being proposed and designated "parting-plane-controlled" caving. A finite element solution for a beam on elastic foundations was used to translate the above concepts into numerical results, these results being compared with data from Indian and Chinese operating conditions. The Indian case study examines the effect of using a conventional chock type of support in a one-web back mode when mining towards a roof break generated ahead of the face, while the Chinese case study compares measured subsidence over a longwall with "blocky" roof conditions with the model results. The comparisons are encouraging, suggesting that the approach used is worthy of further development.

Because of their relatively low cost, carbonate rocks are desirable in abatement of air pollution by acid gases. Although many processes and types of equipment have been proposed to control or prevent the emission of acid gases, this paper considers only three: dry-limestone injection, wet-limestone scrubbing, and chemically active fluid beds. For the dry-limestone-injection process, surface area-especially from pores in the 0. 2- to 0.3-micron range-is one of the important parameters which will discriminate between less and more reactive carbonate rocks. Marls, chalks, oolitic calcites, and other fine- grained limestones show larger-than-average surface areas and better- than-average removal efficiencies. Inert chemical impurities such as silica detract from reactivity. A dolomite is not necessarily less re- active than a calcite. For the wet-limestone-scrubbing process, dissolution rate of the carbonate rock controls the differences in stone reactivity. In this process the dolomites are less reactive than the calcites. In addition, more than 90 percent of the dolomitic impurity in Fredonia white lime- stone is inert during limestone scrubbing. Dissolution rate is also a function of particle size for large-grained carbonate rocks. Fine grinding of such rocks will increase the dissolution rate to that of a fine-grained rock. Hence the requirement of high dissolution rates may be met by some grinding of fine-grained material (e. g., marl, chalk, or other limestone) or by fine grinding of coarser grained material. For chemically active fluid beds, chalks have the best capacity to absorb both SO2 and H2S. However, most chalks are probably unsuitable for fluid beds because of high attrition rates. Because dolomites are generally more reactive than calcites with both SO2 and H2S, a dolomite would be the feed material of choice for a chemically active fluid bed.

INTRODUCTION Cost Management is the evaluation and control of project scope, budgets, and costs with the objective to minimize costs and maximize the benefits to be derived from the use of project resources in conformance with Criteria stipulated or approved by the Owner. In order of importance, Cost Management is one of the most prominent Project Management functions because of its impact on the financial success of the venture. Cost Control and Cost Accounting are essential parts of Cost Management. The principal objectives of Cost Control are to monitor project commitments and expenditures, and measure performance for the detection of variances from acceptable standards and from control budgets so that timely action can be initiated to minimize costs. Cost Control is evaluation of current costs and projection of future costs, rather than the reporting of actual costs. Cost Control is not Cost Accounting. The primary objectives of Cost Accounting are the determination, classification, analysis and reporting in useful detail of actual costs. Following are some considerations on Cost Management and Cost Control as practiced by Owners and Contractors of industrial projects, Mining and Metallurgical projects in particular. COST MANAGEMENT Functions Conforming with the requirements of Owner's Criteria, the principal Cost Management functions are to • evaluate estimates of project costs and establish budgets for a scope of work and schedule; conversely, evaluate the scope of work that can be executed most effectively within a budget and schedule. • promote investigations and comparative evaluations of alternate designs and plans to find the most cost effective way to execute a project and minimize its operating costs. • based on Cost Control and Cost Accounting input, evaluate and initiate appropriate actions to correct deviations from approved budgets. assess project economics, the effect of changes on project economics and, if necessary, revise Project Criteria to modify their impact on costs.

One of the principal responsibilities of the California State Geologist is to provide local governments with maps and information regarding mineral resource occurrences within their jurisdiction. The primary objective of this effort is to furnish basic data that is essential in planning for and accommodating wise development of mineral deposits that are important to the economic well-being of the region, state, and nation. Local government agencies are required by law to incorporate the information provided by the State Geologist into their general plans and formulate mineral resource management policies that emphasize conservation and development of mineral deposits. The Mineral Land Classification program was initiated by the State Geologist in 1977 under authority of the California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA). To date, about 33,000 square miles of land have been classified for mineral resource potential. Most of the mineral land mapping has been conducted in three principal areas: (1) metropolitan areas of the state where urban encroachment has greatly diminished available supplies of construction aggregate; (2) Sierra Nevada foothills, a region that is undergoing dramatic population increases; and (3) the Mojave Desert and Great Basin regions, where large Federal land withdrawals are pending that could preclude mining. Mineral land classification studies address the overall mineral potential of a region through the identification of local and regional geologic factors that control or influence the formation of mineral deposits. These studies are field-intensive surveys that enable project geologists to gain first-hand knowledge about the nature and distribution of mineral deposits in a given area and portray that information accurately in map form. This paper summarizes the progress made in the Mineral Land Classification program in the metropolitan, Sierra Nevada foothills, and the Mojave Desert/Great Basin regions of California. Selected projects from each area are discussed in detail.

The most common method of determining airflow employed by mine ventilation engineers is the product of i) the average air velocity as measured by a vane anemometer and stopwatch through a continuous traversing technique, with ii) the cross-sectional area of the roadway. This method requires the vane anemometer to accumulate the total flow over the duration of the traverse. Historically, this has been facilitated by a mechanical analog instrument that has either a counter or set of dials that display the flow. Common instruments of this type are Airflow Development's AM5000, Davis's, or Taylor's Biram type anemometer. The AM5000 is widely used in the Canadian mining industry but is no longer available. Therefore, regulatory authorities have seen fit to evaluate presently available commercial instruments to replace the AM5000. This paper describes an instrument evaluation contracted by the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada which regulates the uranium industry. Over the last two decades there have been numerous advances in the development of electronic air velocity meters. Currently available units have the following features: a) battery operation; b) are compact and can be hand-held; c) employ LCD's, and microelectronic circuitry; and d) provide a time integration for the duration of a traverse. These features make such instruments a possible replacement to the analog units and stopwatch determinations. This paper details five of the new generation of vane anemometers plus a vortex air meter, and it explores their limitations in comparison to analog units. Specific consideration is given to linear response, the effects of yaw, traversing speeds and ergonomics relating to both handling and use. The paper concludes with some features that are attractive and should be considered when purchasing a new anemometer.

Derivatised 2,4-diketopyrimidine groups have been anchored to planar gold surfaces as self¬-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for chemical and photochemical studies. Three derivatives, 5-methyluracil (thymine), 5-trifluoromethyluracil and 5-nitrouracil, were chosen for the specific moiety present at position C-5, which can exert strong or weak inductive effects on the adjacent aromatic ring. The measured acidity constants decrease from 5-methyluracil to 5-nitrouracil as the inductive properties of the group at C-5 position increase. When grafted to the surface the acidity constants increase, albeit still adhering to the expected inductive trend. The functionality also exerts an influence on the surface wetting properties. Surface wettabilities indicate that the orientation of the pyrimidine groups at the surface occurs so that the C-5 position has a direct effect upon the surface chemistry. Upon dimerisation the surface contact angles increase signifi¬cantly. At pH 11 the contact angle changes reflect that the dimer has a higher pKa than the monomer. The monomer surface is deprotonated at this pH while the dimer surface is partially deprotonated, leading to changes in contact angle of up to 22 degrees. Large changes in contact angle were observed for 5-nitrouracil which were independent of surface charge and were appar¬ently due to conformational changes alone. Electrowetting of three fluoropolymer surfaces by electrolyte solutions was studied with the sessile drop method. The electrowetting curve (contact angle/potential) is analogous to the elec¬trocapillary curve (surface tension/potential) and may be described by a combination of the Young and Lippmann equations. We demonstrate that for some specific surfaces a systematic deviation occurs at positive potentials. This departure is attributed to double layer effects, namely the adsorption of hydroxide and halide anions. pH, ionic strength and polymer composi¬tion can all influence electrowetting behaviour.

"MOTIVATION Tunnel construction companies must keep costs low, finish projects in less time and still meet the high quality and safety standards. Therefore, their main goal is always to optimize the tunnel excavation process. Traditional geodetical methods are used since more than 100 years to ensure an exact breakthrough of a tunnel. Evolving sensors, sensor fusion and increasing computation resources opened new fields of application for geodetic solutions in tunneling. These solutions offer new ways to reduce costs and risks in tunneling. INTRODUCTION Nowadays in tunneling, geodetical measurement methods are not only used for guidance, but also for various other applications. This paper gives an overview about where geodetical measurements are used today and highlights their benefits for safety and costs aspects. Furthermore, advanced solutions are introduced. In progressive projects, they have already become state of the art technology and are in use daily. STANDARD GEODETICAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS In drill & blast tunnel construction processes, there are many standard geodetical applications used in the different construction phases, each having different requirements regarding accuracy. In the excavation construction stage, guidance tasks and setting-out of various positions is done by the foremen. Thanks to simplified measurement tools, the foremen are enabled to carry out these measurement tasks themselves without requiring deep surveying knowledge. In contrast, deformation analysis and network measurement campaigns need sophisticated planning and a profound education in surveying. Therefore, these tasks are carried out by surveyors. Profile control and as-built documentation is required in each construction phase. Depending on the requirements of the project, this task can be carried out either by the foremen or a specialized surveyor. Table 1 provides an overview over typical surveying tasks in an underground project including information about who is doing the job and the according accuracy requirements. The listed tasks are described in more detail below."
