Organic matter commonly associated with Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) lead-zinc deposits may be used to assess the burial/thermal history of host rocks and sulfides. Organic matter may also have been involved in the genesis of H2S required to precipitate sulfide ores. Pine Point, Northwest Territories, Canada, provides an example. Located on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, Pine Point is an operating world class deposit which has produced 58 million tons of ore containing 3.0 percent Pb and 6.1 percent Zn from more than 40 Individual orebodies. Well-documented paleokarst features in a Middle Devonian carbonate complex are the main ore hosts. Sphalerite and galena ores are mainly open space fillings, and, from fluid inclusion studies, were deposited from saline fluids at temperatures of up to at least 100°C. Forms of organic matter occurring in the Pine Point barrier-reef complex Include indigenous organic matter, heavy oil and bitumen. Based on numerous geochemical criteria, it is clear that heavy oils and bitumens were derived locally from indigenous organic matter. The geochemical character of the Indigenous organic matter demonstrates that the barrier-reef complex is immature to marginally mature with respect to petroleum generation, and has not been heated above about 60°C maximum. Thus sphalerite with fluid inclusions that yield temperatures up to about 100°C represents former thermal anomalies. Bitumen is of two main forms at Pine Point: widespread soft, tarry material soluble in organic solvents (unaltered bitumen); and hard, brittle, glassy material that is mostly solvent-insoluble, and associated with white sparry dolomite and lead-zinc ores (altered bitumen). There are also partly altered bitumens. Unaltered bitumens have atomic H/C ratios of about 1.4, sulfur contents averaging 7.8 percent, and sulfur isotope ratios 634S) of approximately +4.6 per mil. Altered bitumens have atomic H/C ratios averaging 1.02, sulfur contents averaging 22 percent, and 634S values of about +12.9 per mil. These data and the organic geochemical character of a large suite of bitumen samples analyzed, strongly support the concept that some bitumen has been involved in the thermochemical reduction of sulfate to produce the H2S required to precipitate the ores. Mass-balance calculations indicate that the amount and degree of alteration of bitumen is more than enough to account for the reduced sulfur species deposited as metallic sulfides at Pine Point. MVT deposits, including Pine Point, seem to require the coincidence of available metallic Ions, pre-existing pore space, and a precipitating agent. A close look at organic matter in more MVT settings may outline trends in distribution or alteration which can be used as indicators of past thermal environments and processes of ore deposition.

Introduction It is the morning after and there is one monumental hangover among many, if not most, of the oil companies that invested in mining in the past decade. How an oil company looks at mining depends on the time period. A few years back, around the time of investment, they were probably looking at a balance sheet of their own that was beginning to go wild. Many of their commodity prices already increased two-, three-, or fourfold, with no end in sight. There was a need to invest their earnings someplace before the stockholders or the government got too interested. And that someplace needed to be an industry where their own management skills could be applied. In mining there was an industry amazingly similar to their own. Both worked with nonrenewable natural resources, dealt with the same types of government agencies, and had the same type of critics and pressures from the general population. Oil executives saw mining as an industry that was somewhat backward as compared with their own. They also saw how a generous ration of the capital and management skills, so handsomely bestowed upon the oil industry, could be used to great advantage. But, looking at mining through the eyes of an oil company today, this is what might be seen: • An industry that has been spectacularly unprofitable for the past few years; • An industry of many commodities, any of which can go bad on short notice for protracted periods, for a variety of unpredictable and uncontrollable reasons, or for no reason at all; • A labor-intensive industry, often beset by labor problems. And with only limited potential for further economic mechanization or automation in today's primitive mining environment; • An industry confronted with external, foreign, and political problems, with no reasonable expectation of near-term relief; and • An industry that does not appear to have many "up" periods in its immediate future. And, there is little chance for either big, fast bucks or long periods of large, steady earnings. What Went Wrong? The visions of a few years back seemed as correct then as today's viewpoints seem to be now. What happened to change these views? What went wrong? The simplest and easiest answer is that if the economy was normal back then, nothing would have gone wrong. This is an easy answer but, unfortunately, probably incorrect. Let us take a broad overview. Certain events enabled and prompted oil companies to invest heavily in mining. These same events were major factors in precipitating the worldwide recession that has grievously injured mining and has brought those mining investments into disrepute. The United States has very large coal reserves in seams that are less than 1065 mm (42 in.) thick. These reserves are often not mined because of the difficulty of working in low heights and, in most cases, the seams are beyond the technical or economical limits. It is estimated that the remaining reserves in 355 to 710 mm (14 to 28 in.) thick seams that are not faulted or intruded, dip less than 15° and under a cover of 610 m (2000 ft) or less are nearly 910 Gt (1 trillion st). This is a very large percentage of coal reserves in the United States (Unrug, 1985; DuCarme et al., 1990). The US Bureau of Mines is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm (6 to 42 in.) thick coal seams. Research has focused on existing thin seam mining techniques, testing of small- and full-scale physical models of the Bureau's slot mining concept and computer modeling of the full-scale process. In 1986, only 21 % of the total US coal production came from -1065 mm (-42 in.) thick seams. Of that, 355 to 710 mm (14 to 28 in.) thick seams share of production was minimal, probably 5% or less (Mayercheck et al., 1990). This shows that the thin seams, particularly the seams 355 to 710 mm (14 to 28 in.) thick, have not been mined to the extent of the available reserves. Thin seam coal, generally, is of premium quality. As thicker seams are depleted, the mining of thin seams could become more important. Thus, there is a need to develop technology to mine these seams (J. Farinelli et al., 1987). A successfully applied technology could change reserve categorization. In the Appalachian Plateau there are 417 Gt (460 billion st) in 355 to 1065 mm (14 to 42 in.) seams. This represents nearly 9.2% of the US remaining reserves (Unrug, 1985). At depths of 152 m (500 ft) or less, the Appalachian Plateau has about 214 Gt (236 billion st) of reserves in 355 to 1065 mm (14 to 42 in.) thick seams. Other mining areas also have substantial coal reserves in this seam thickness category. Those, however, are not as attractive for mining as the Appalachian Plateau. In the past, most of the reserves of the Appalachian Plateau region were partially worked by contour and highwall auger mining. It is estimated that these mining systems had left some 40,230 km (25,000 miles) (Readers Digest, 1987) of unreclaimed highwalls. The Bureau recognized this situation. In FY1987, the agency initiated a research project to develop anew technology for mining thin seams of the Appalachian Plateau.

A new sense of urgency permeates the mining industry concerning maintenance. Mining's continuous process environment demands around-the-clock maintenance support. And profitability conscious mining operations require that production targets be met on time - and economically. These goals require nothing less than an effective maintenance program. In turn, the effectiveness of the maintenance program depends on quality information: easily procured, complete, timely, accurate, and properly used. Information picture is changing Some of the fully integrated, mainframe maintenance information pro¬grams of better days remain. Their upkeep and cost of operation, though, is becoming more difficult to justify. Some operations, faced with production cutbacks a few years ago, downscaled and found they liked it. Now, during an upswing, these operations question the need for the more elaborate, administrative-heavy programs they used to operate. Package programs are not taking their place. Too often, the packages are vague and generic. Some vendors claim that if their offerings work in a hospital complex, they must work in an underground mine. That is not so. Maintenance information in the mining industry is different. The situation has changed There are now smaller, self-contained maintenance groups whose information needs are different. These include an electrical crew in a smelter, an underground mobile equipment shop, or a remote service shop between several distant operating pits. These working environments have changed the character of the information needed as well as the methods for obtaining and using it. Operations-maintenance link In coming back from a downturn, operations people realize that their ability to meet production targets hinges on reliable equipment and avoidance of downtime. They have become familiar with the need to use maintenance services effectively. They also want quality maintenance information. When coupled with the sense of urgency about maintenance, a business-like working environment emerges that has significant new differences in both work control and information. Work control impact Work control has been streamlined to improve communications. Supporting information has been streamlined as well. • Verbal orders are the rule rather than the exception to quickly bring a multi-craft crew to the flotation section or a pit crew to a disabled haulage truck. • Written work requests and work order forms are seldom used, or even needed. Rather, electronic work control logs permit operations to request work, maintenance to acknowledge it, get ready, and do it - quickly, without delay. • Routine servicing is triggered by operating hour accumulation (mobile equipment) or tons of throughput (fixed equipment). Operations is now taking the initiative in delivering mobile equip¬ment to the "bad order line," or switching to a bypass conveyor. Developing a laboratory procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion for many decades, and the reliability of laboratory determinations is often the subject of debate. A coal seam’s characteristics, the method of sample collection, the specimen preparation method and the testing procedure can often result in drastic variations in the test results. In this paper, the development of a laboratory testing procedure for the determination of coal-seam compressive strength is presented. Two samples that were collected from different coal seams were tested in this study. First, the inherent characteristics, i.e., coal structure. Hardgrove grindability index (HGI), Slake durability index, proximate analysis and mechanical properties (Young's modules and Poisson's ratio), of each coal were determined. The results were used to categorize the coal scams in terms of the characteristics liable to produce variable strength data in typical laboratory tests. Second, two commonly used laboratory specimen shapes, cylindrical and cubical, were tested to determine which shape produced the most reproducible strength values. Third, four loading rates within the static testing range, i.e., 0.007, 0.07, 0.34 and 0.7 MPa/s (1.0, 10, 50 and 100 psi/sec), were used to determine the ideal loading rate. Finally, the number of test samples required to produce strength data within the acceptable standard deviation, considering coal seam characteristics, were established. Background Laboratory testing of coal specimens for the determination of seam compressive strength has been a subject of discussion since the early 1900s. Many researchers have tested coal specimens to estimate coal-seam compressive strength for use in pillar design to insure the safe operation of [ ] mines (Unrug et al., 1986; and Hirt et al.. 1992). Yet, there is a lack of a universal procedure, and, no matter which approach is used, it becomes the subject of intensive debate. A great deal of work has been performed on the subject, and there is much information available in the literature. Some of this work concerns quantifying the influence of specimen shape and size on compressive strength (Bieniawski. 1968: Barron et al.. 1992: Khair and Xu 1994; and Khair 1994). As indicted in the literature, coal is a heterogeneous material, consisting of discontinuities such as cleats and bedding planes, which are likely to produce variable strength results (Holland, 1964; Unrug et al., 1986). Some of the prominent issues that influence the determination of coal-seam compressive strength in the laboratory are: •the collection of a representative sample from a coal seam; •the geometry, i.e., shape and size of the specimens to be prepared and tested: •the loading rate at which the specimens are to be tested:

BRUCE CAVENDER, BHP Copper: Having worked in both places, I'd like to address the issue of the plant versus the corporate office. One thing to keep in mind is that we are all very engaged with the technical elegance of a lot of the work we do. There's some tremendous technical expertise in the plant. But remember, the guys in the corporate office are only thinking in one denomination, and that's dollars. So we'll see something like a spill, and for us it's a problem. At the end of the day, what the corporation cares about is the financial impact. So we've got to be careful to couch our solutions in dollar terms. JIM ARNOLD: Rebuttal? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Are you going to rebut this one, Andy? ANDY CARTER, Oxidor Gold Corporation: No, I don't think so. I'm not up to it. I'd just like to address a question both to our panel and the floor. Those of us who've been in this industry any length of time have seen these same mistakes made over and over again. Wherever you go, year after year, plant after plant, you see the same problems. I guarantee you, Doug, that if we have a similar conference down the road, you're going to see the same thing. My question to the panel and to the floor is what is it about our industry that stops us from learning from our mistakes? What characteristic is it that prevents us from learning and makes us repeat the same mistakes over and over again? DOUG HALBE: That's a great question. Someone said in a meeting 10 years ago that if the people who design plants designed airplanes, the planes would be falling out of the air all the time. GARY SIMMONS, Newmont Gold Company: I've got an answer to your question as to why many plants are poorly designed. It's that the minute anybody demonstrates any sort of competence in plant design, they're promoted to a higher-paying job, and the talent pool is left with people of lesser experience. Just think about it: The people who have the experience and have demonstrated it more than once have moved up. JIM ARNOLD: I think that there's another reason, too. Seven or eight years ago I was chairing a session, and I challenged everyone in the session to some day publish an article about the design mistakes they'd made because we never talk about our mistakes. INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY Phosphate matrix beneficiation is the process of providing a mineral product suitable for downstream chemical processing to yield high analysis chemical fertil- zers. Extraneous contaminants, clays and gangue solids, are separated by screening and flotation. Reject materials always carry with them some phosphate mineral values, however. A continuing objective is minimizing phosphate losses discarded with tailings as a principle factor in maintaining beneficiation efficiency. The quest for efficiency, and improved productivity, during beneficiation is hampered by disturbances arising from among the following: o Natural variance of phosphate deposit compositions, o Minimal control over managing ore matrix supply to the plants, o Screening and flotation mechanical upsets and inefficiencies. Production personnel, in recognizing these factors, attempt corrections for changed process conditions. This response usually has limited effect. Efforts of product- ion personnel to correct for upsets of the process may often diminish efficiencies rather than improve them. Lack of prompt data for analysis of process streams is an important contributing cause of inefficient operation. Discussion in this paper examines methods for improved process control in Florida phosphate beneficiation with particular emphasis on use of on-stream analysis to aid gaining productivity. The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research has supported demonstration of on-stream analysis applicable to improved process control. Concurrently, work is proceeding world-wide in the phosphate industry toward practical on-line analysis technology. Table 1 summarizes viable methods for real-time analysis data as result of work by individual companies and research organizations. A recently completed investigation (sponsored by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research) of beneficiation efficiency was carried out in two Florida beneficiation plants using a newly developed on-stream analyzer for phosphorus (1). BPL measurements were taken at frequent intervals over two to three weeks of routine operation. Grades are expressed in "BPL", with one BPL, or bone phosphate of lime unit, equal to 0.46 P^Y2^YO^Y5^Y. The time series of feed and tailing BPL data were evaluated by statistical procedures. Results show avoidable losses can be five per cent or greater of mineral values in feed. Use of modern process control methods in Florida phosphate mining began several years ago (2, 3). Benefits of stabilizing control used in one of the two plants where data were collected for the investigation, in comparison to manual control in the other, are outlined. Process control technology developments reported from European and South African phosphate mining operations are also noted (4, 5). It is now well accepted that advanced control techniques can increase beneficiation productivity by better management of losses. However, to make advanced control effective, real-time measurements are needed of feed and tailings BPL as well as mass flow rates.

The microtunneling test program is one of three main elements of the research project, "Trenchless Construction: Evaluation of Methods and Materials to Install and Rehabilitate Underground Utilities." The other elements of this project include an evaluation and demonstration of horizontal directional drilling technology and pipeline rehabilitation systems. The research is a Corps and Industry cost-shared project funded under the Construction Productivity Advancement Research (CPAR) program. The laboratory partner is the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), Geotechnical Laboratory. The industry partner is the Louisiana Tech University's Trenchless Technology Center. Industry participants are contributing over half the total cost of this research. The overall objective of the CPAR program is to improve productivity in the U.S. construction industry, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the U.S. industry in domestic and overseas markets. The Corps and other federal and state agencies will benefit by realizing reduced costs, enhanced safety and better products and services as the products of this research program are developed, tested, and pushed into the market place. The microtunneling demonstrations and evaluations were performed during September and October 1992 at a specially constructed test facility built at WES in Vicksburg, MS. The test facility is 104 m (340-ft) long, 5 m (16-ft) wide, and 4 m (13-ft) deep. It was constructed, ironically, by first excavating a trench into which 6 different types of soils were placed and compacted in approximately 18.3 m (60-ft) long sections. The soil profiles include a lean silty clay (loess), a dry sand, highly plastic buckshot clay, wet sand, clay gravel and silt. The interfaces between soil profiles were sloped to simulate mixed face conditions as the machines exit one zone and enter another, and provided challenges to ground control and alignment and grade control during these transitions. Moisture and density tests were performed on all materials in each lift to assure uniformity. Horizontal inclinometers and 3 levels of settlement plates were installed at key locations in the test bed. The settlement plates and rods and the horizontal inclinometers, together with surface survey points, provided data to evaluate settlement and heave along the test section. Penetration resistance was measured in each section of the completed test bed. Strain gages were installed in 8 of the 0.6 m (24 in.) diam. Hobas pipe sections to measure strains in the pipe as it was being jacked into place. Steering jack loads, jacking thrust loads, and cutterhead torque were also measured during the drives. The results of these tests will be used together with other information to develop guidelines for conducting feasibility studies and selecting proper methods compatible with anticipated conditions.

The population of the Rhondda underwent a spectacular rise as energy requirements increased in the mid-nineteenth century. The rapid expansion in the demand for coal transformed the population from a few hundred sheep farmers in the eighteenth century, into a thriving coal-based economy of some 168,000 inhabitants in 1924. Cochrane (1958) put forward the idea that the differential migration of more healthy men from the Rhondda Fach during the period since the peak of population in 1924, had resulted in a respiratorily-impaired residual population. This idea was used to explain the reduced survival of miners & ex-miners aged 55-64 years from this valley as compared with a similar group from Leigh in England. Using the proportional hazards regression model of Cox (1972), a comparison is presented of the exact twenty-year mortality of migrant and non-migrant miners & ex-miners and non-miners from the Rhondda Fach. The analysis makes allowance for the pattern of migration throughout the twenty-year period and adjusts for the confounding influence of variables such as age, occupation, and category of Simple Pneumoconiosis. The results indicate that contrary to expectation, any effect of migration upon mortality is manifest only at higher ages. Furthermore, for these men, the migrants have worse survival than the non-migrants. Also, contrary to expectation in the light of work by the British Coal Board (Soutar et al, 1982) there is no evidence of increased mortality amongst men with category I simple pneumoconiosis. INTRODUCTION [The Background] In September 1950, the Medical Research Council's Pneumoconiosis Research Unit at Penarth in South Wales initiated a study of lung disease in the smaller of the two Rhondda Valleys - the Rhondda Fach. At that time, the primary interest was in assessing the possible role of pulmonary tuberculosis in the aetiology of the serious (complicated) form of coal-workers' pneumoconiosis, i.e. Progressive Massive Fibrosis. The Rhondda Fach is situated in South Wales, some 25 km north-west of Cardiff. It is a narrow winding river valley about 12 km long, and approximately 1 km wide. The name means Little Rhondda; there is a corresponding Big Rhondda - the Rhondda Fawr. Together, these valleys make-up most of the Rhondda Municipal Borough. Following the initial survey in 1950-51, there have been several follow-up studies of this population. In addition, amongst numerous other investigations to unravel the aetiology of coal-workers' pneumoconiosis, Medical Research Council teams studied various other (sample) population groups, particularly in the industrial areas of the adjacent Aberdare Valley, and in Staveley and Leigh in England. The agricultural areas of the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales, and Annandale in Scotland were also studied.

INTRODUCTION In 1960, coal accounted for 49% of the world energy consumption, an amount that was reduced to 29% in 1973 because of the availability of cheap oil. At that time, it seemed that oil would remain available for a long time in unlimited quantities. However, this situation changed drastically in 1973/74 when a series of closely spaced price increases from $3 per to $12 per bbl by mid-1974 hit both industrialized and developing countries. Another sharp price increase in 1979/80 to the $34 to $38 per bbl level also hit the world economy hard and, at the same time, set in motion powerful technology development forces for increased coal utilization. At this point, the price of coal was approximately $1.50 per MM Btu, while that of oil approached $6.00 per MM Btu. This huge price differential offered an incentive for developing new coal technologies including liquefaction, gasification, fluidized bed combustion, coal-water mixture (CWM), etc. The CWM technology was of particular interest to the utility industry, which consumes more than 80% of the coal mined in the US for power generation. In this technology, a powdered coal is mixed with water to produce a stable slurry that can be stored for an extended period of time without settling and is readily pumpable. Various reagents in the amount of approximately 1% by weight of the coal are added to inhibit sedimentation during storage and to reduce the viscosity for atomization in burners. The coal loading is in the range of 50 to 80% solids, depending on the particle size and its distribution. With very fine particles, it is difficult to increase the coal loading above 50%, and a binomial distribution helps increase the coal loading. The presence of water consumes a relatively small amount of the heating value of the coal during combustion; for a coal-water slurry containing 30% water, less than 5% of the calorific value of coal is usually consumed due to evaporation. The major advantage of burning coal as a slurry is that many of the oil-burning furnaces can be converted to coal-burning with a minimum retrofit cost. Considering the substantial price margin between coal and oil, the pay- back period for retrofit costs can be relatively short. Nevertheless, the retrofit cost can be further reduced if low-ash coals are used as feedstocks for CWM; there will be savings in the capital cost of installing bag filters or electrostatic precipitators that are designed to remove the ash from the combustion gases. Furthermore, the use of low-ash coals can minimize derating of boilers because the velocity of the combustion gases can be maximized without creating erosion

INTRODUCTION Radiation is one of the many agents occurring in our environment that is capable of causing cancers. We are all unavoidably exposed to natural background radiation. If we wish to exploit the beneficial uses of radiation in medicine, industry, and for the production of electricity, some further exposures to radiation are almost inevitable. One needs to ensure therefore, that the standards of radiation protection are safely derived and one would want to understand the mechanism by which radiation might cause cancer and genetic defects. In order to study the effects of radiation one can: (1) analyze human data, (2) perform animal experiments, and (3) do molecular level experiments. Indeed all three kinds of information are needed. This paper will concentrate on the steps required to obtain some of the necessary human data regarding health effects, where the concern is about the impact and consequences of long-term low-level exposures to an agent. Such investigations require some knowledge of work histories, dose histories, health "outcomes", and the personal identification of the individual involved. Three inter-related computer systems have been developed at Statistics Canada which have been designed to permit optimal use of a number of different records for our entire country for such health related research. The development of the Canadian Mortality Data Base, the initiation of the National Cancer Incidence Reporting System, and the development of new computer linkage techniques have helped reduce the cost and increase the scale and efficiency of automated follow-up to produce statistics of sickness or death associated with radiation and other carcinogenic agents in mines. These computer systems have already been implemented, and references will be made to studies currently being conducted using these files and facilities (e.g. a study of all Ontario miners, plus various Canadian uranium, fluorospar, salt and nickel miners). We will also look at the kinds of data that need to be collected now, to improve such studies in the future. DELAYED RISKS - THE STUDY SIZE AND COST Delayed effects on human health, as for example industrially caused cancer, can in general only be detected and measured by following-up the individuals to see what eventually becomes of them. What is not generally recognized is that the relatively low levels of individual risk, about which the public is often concerned, usually requires for their detection that very large numbers of "exposed" and "control" individuals (e.g. 10,000 to 100,000 or more) be followed over a period of two or three decades to determine when they die, what they die of, and whether they contracted cancer or some other disease of special concern. Thus, it is frequently exceedingly difficult to make such investigations cost-effective so that they will be undertaken at all, and as a result very real risks to health can remain undetected or unquantified. THE MANUAL PROCEDURES Follow-up of individuals by epidemiologists has until recently been a largely manual and clerical operation. It has used a diversity of source record files; local, regional, and national. Often the tracing of people has involved letters sent through the mails and visits to institutions, physicians, municipal offices, and former neighbours. Only thus could one find out whether the individuals were dead or alive. Such studies were necessarily small, or else very expensive. Death registrations have, by tradition, provided a valuable tool for the identification of harmful influences in the environment. However, with the increasing mobility in the population, death may often occur far away from the place of exposure to such an influence. Thus, no longer will simple manual searches in a single registry office suffice to inform the investigator concerning the deaths that may have occurred in a study population, especially when that population is large. In the past, manual follow-up to locate the relevant death registration normally required some prior knowledge of the province and year of death in question, so that the alphabetic indexes could he used to direct researchers to the appropriate bound volumes of registration forms. To search manually in this fashion for any large number of death registrations, without knowing in which year or province the deaths had taken place, or even whether they had yet occurred, would be impractical, since each year in Canada there are about 170,000 deaths. DEATH AND CANCER AS SPECIAL ENDPOINTS Much of recent effort has been focused on the organization of the "endpoint" files required to do long-term follow-up studies on a national scale, because that is a function which other institutions are unable to perform due to the confidentiality laws governing the use of such information. Hydrodynamic investigations in exploratory boreholes and grouting holes are conducted for the purpose of obtain¬ing information about the hydraulic properties of the hydrostratigraphic section to be intersected by the proposed underground workings. The information obtained from the investigations provides the basis for calculating the hydrau¬lic coefficients of fractured permeable rock, the dimensions of the anticipated grout isolation curtain(s) around the un¬derground workings, the number and location of grouting holes, the injection pressure modes, and also the volume(s) of grout that will be required (Anon., 1976, 1978). The following data on each aquifer are obtained from the investigations conducted in monitoring and grouting bore¬holes and the analysis of the results: 1) the top of each hydrostratigraphic unit, 2) the thickness of each unit, 3) the ground water fluid potential distribution in each unit, 4) the coefficient of permeability, 5) the piezoconductivity, 6) the fracture porosity, 7) the geometry of the fractures in the rock, 8) the elasticity-compressibility coefficient of the fractured rock, 9) the chemical composition of the ground water, 10) the direction of flow of the ground water, and 11) the expected inflow rate of water into the shaft, drift or tunnel. STG uses its DAU-3M type flowmeter to conduct in¬vestigations of directions of flow in vertical, inclined and horizontal drillholes. The DAU-6 instrument is used to de¬termine the direction of flow of ground water in each frac¬ture or fractured aquifer. Various singular and double DAU type packers are used for pumping and for injection studies (tests) and for flowmeter investigations. Normally the instruments enumerated above permit in¬vestigations to be conducted in each separate aquifer with¬out reinforcing the holes with casings. On the basis of these investigative data, both the hydraulic properties of unfractured rock and the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock are estimated. Dual porosity rocks require special attention because they tend to segregate the grout. 3.1 FLOWMETER INVESTIGATIONS IN BOREHOLES The STG flowmetric methodology is based on the mea¬surement of the ground water flow rate through the borehole by hydrostratigraphic interval after the disturbance of the hydrostatic equilibrium in the "hole-aquifer system" (after pumping or injecting). The relationship of the head changes to the discharge into or from a particular hydrostratigraphic unit obtained during the tests serve as the basis for calcu¬lating the hydraulic properties. Flowmetric investigations facilitate the determination of the number of aquifers, their depths, their thickness, the hydraulic properties of the fractured rock and the magnitude and direction of the flow of ground water. 3.1.1 FLOWMETER HARDWARE STG conducts flowmetric investigations in boreholes using its DAU-3M-108, DAU-3M-73, DAU-3M-57 and DAU-3M-44 instruments.' They have respective external diameters of 108, 73, 57 and 44 mm. The type of flowmeter selected for use depends on the borehole geometry and the technological scheme for carrying out the investigations. Boreholes with a drilling diameter of 76-93 mm are inves¬tigated with the DAU-3M-73 flowmeter; boreholes drilled by bits with a diameter of 112 mm and more are investi¬gated using the DAU-3M-108 flowmeter. The DAU-3M¬108 and DAU-3M-57 instruments are used for flowmetric investigations with a packer. 3.1.1.1 The Downhole Sensor The sensor design of the DAU-3M-73 hole flowmeter is shown in Fig. 2. The design of the DAU-3M-108 instru¬ment is similar to the design of the DAU-3M-73 instrument. The frame of the flowmeter sensor shown in Fig. 2 consists of a casing, an upper and lower centering mount and two rings to which the guiding rods are attached. The upper rods are built into the connector bushing; the lower rods are built into the coupling sleeve. The borehole cable is attached using a half-coupling, a packing ring and a constriction nut. Thus, the frame of the flowmeter sensor is made so that the free passage of water to the impeller is facilitated along with the necessary rigidity. The primary moving component of the flowmeter is the double-bladed impeller, which rotates on cobalt-tungsten pivots and agate thrust bearings. Special extended air cham¬bers protect the supports of the impeller from the action of the borehole fluid which may contain fibrous and abrasive particles. The air located in the chambers shields the sup¬ports from direct contact with the borehole fluid when the sensor operates in a borehole. The Amax Gold Guanaco mine is located in the Atacama Desert, approximately 260 km southeast of Antofagasta, Chile. The 6,000 tpd leach operation produces approximately 90,000 oz of gold, and 360,000 oz of silver per year. Production began in 1987, and the operation has been managed by Amax Gold since 1992. The mine has been plagued in the past by high operating costs and low production. Several significant changes have been made to the operations which have resulted in lower costs and higher operating efficiencies. A review of these changes is presented herein.

In-situ uranium mining is a relatively new and innovative method utilized for the commercial extraction of uranium. As with any mining method, however, significant environmental concerns will be evident and must be addressed in a rational and far-sighted manner. Experience has shown that radiological and non-radiological environmental problems may not manifest themselves until after the in-situ methodology has become established and matured to some degree. It is important, therefore, to recognize potential environmental concerns and incorporate them into an environmental program that spans the premining, mining, and post-mining phases of an in-situ operation.

In 1967 a large kaolin deposit was discovered on the Jari River, a tributary of the Amazon, in the territory of Amapa in Brazil. The kaolin occurs in the Barreiras Series of Pliocene age and is part of the Belterra Clay. The kaolin was drilled and tested, and today a modern processing plant is producing over 150,000 tons per year of high quality paper coating clay. Some of the problems associated with the mine development, processing, personnel, and marketing of this remote kaolin deposit are discussed. The mineralogy and physical properties of the Jari kaolin deposit are also described.

The INRED process has been developed step by step by Boliden since 1972 at MEFOS, the Foundation for Metallurgical Research, at Lulea in Sweden. The demonstration - plant is number five in this series. The purpose of this plant, which has a nominal capacity of 60,000 tonnes per year of hot metal is to: 1) prove the process on a sufficiently large scale to provide the basis for construction of production plants, 2) test various kinds of raw materials on behalf of licensees, 3) train operators of the first production plant, 4) develop the process further for special applications.

The relationship of various genetic classifications of graphite, their properties and general applications are reviewed. The classifications being amorphous, flake, high crystalline (vein) primary synthetic graphite and secondary graphite. The properties discussed are size, carbon, sulfur, ash content, general chemical analysis and degree of graphitization of each type. The major sources for natural and synthetic graphite powders are discussed in addition to factors which govern the cost as well as the supply. The economics of graphite are basically determined by the consumer and the end application. Graphite is a strategic mineral and is on the government stockpile list.

The oxidation kinetics of pyrite and refractory gold concentrates in acidified ferrous sulfate solutions in the presence of oxygen-sulfur dioxide gas mixtures has been studied. The effect of temperature, pulp density and gas composition were determined. The optimum oxidation rate was obtained at 80°C and 2 percent sulfur dioxide in the gas mixture. The oxidation of the sulfide minerals is attributed to the presence of ferric ions, which are continuously regenerated by the gas mixture. The objective of this study is to find a new hydrometallurgical method to render sulfidic refractory gold ores amenable to cyanization.
