Thank you Mr. Stevens. It's a pleasure for me to be speaking to this meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME this afternoon, and the Gypsum, Association is grateful for the invitation. A brief word about who we are: the Gypsum Association is the trade association for the gypsum industry - the manufacturers of gypsum board and lath a-d plaster. We have a membership of eight companies. These eight companies produce about 90% of the gypsum products manufactured in the United States ... closer to 94% actually. Our headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois. We have an east coast office in Washington, D.C. where the eastern manager handles technical and building code matters and maintains liaison between all of the government agencies and departments and our industry. We also have a west coast office in Los Angeles where our west coast representatives is heavily involved with the Uniform Building Code and ICBO. And then in the Evanston office our manager of technical and building code services, Herb Carlsen, bites his nails and loses his hair over these problems and various other projects that come in, such as conversion to metric and various other things. We also have a research associate at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington who is currently concentrating his efforts on the combustibility of building materials. His studies involve current testing methods, definitions, data analysis, and proposed new testing methods,.' It is anticipated that this program will lead to a better understanding of non-combustibility of building materials and systems. I mentioned that our members represent over 90% of gypsum products,' manufactured in the United States; it might be well to point out a couple of statistics about what that really means. "Tunnels designed to NFPA 502 are required to withstand the RWS time-temperature curve, more specifically prevent progressive spalling and loss of strength of steel reinforcement. Fire boards or spray-on layers can be effective, however, these solutions have capital and whole-life cost implications. The use of “fire resistant” concrete based on a suitable aggregate with polypropylene fibers has also increased in recent years. This article presents a new methodology for thermal and structural analysis of segmentally lined tunnels, which permits the analysis of project specific fire curves and an assessment of different fire protection strategies. The effectiveness of fire boards is assessed along with whether “fire resistant” concrete alone is a viable means of achieving the required protection. Finally, since NFPA 502 recommends water-based fixed fire-fighting systems for Category C and D tunnels, we discuss the question of how a fixed fire-fighting system should be addressed within the structural design. INTRODUCTION Protecting road tunnels from structural damage and collapse is a key requirement for both life safety and business continuity. Where road tunnels are part of key highway corridors, protecting business continuity is a high priority for owners, operators and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. For existing tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 may require upgrades with either passive fire protection and/or water-based fixed firefighting systems. For new tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 requires a combination of good practice in design and fire testing. A water-based fixed firefighting system is a Conditionally Mandatory Requirement1 for Class C and D tunnels, i.e. all tunnels greater than 300m and 1000m long respectively. The basis for fire safety design of new tunnels and assessment of existing tunnels is the worst-case fire scenario. The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today's machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

This paper presents a preliminary phase of a study being conducted by the Department of Geochemistry of the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables in the vicinity of the Pachuca-Real del Monte Mining District. This district is located in central Mexico, about 100 km northeast of Mexico City. It has been in operation for the past 450 years and has produced about 38 million kg of silver and about 190 thousand kg of gold. At the present it is being worked by the state owned mining company of Real del Monte and Pachuca. The rocks of the area consist mainly of Tertiary volcanics, ranging in age from early Oligocene to late Pliocene. Ore bodies are recognized as epithermal, vein type fracture fillings. The main ore minerals are argentite and acanthite normally accompanied by base metal sulphides, Gold is present in small amounts as native gold and in other minerals. Orientation geochemical studies performed on soil and rocks over known veins in the district, showed zinc to be the best indicator. Lead and silver anomalies are restricted to the immediate vicinity of the veins, mercury shows the mineralized structures only when the "C" horizon is sampled, while antimony gave erratic values. The El Chico area is about 10 km north of the Pachuca-Real del Monte district and covers approximately 400 sq km. Geological evidence indicated the possibility of an extension of the Pachuca ore bodies in this area. Results obtained from soil and rock samples from El Chico, showed several anomalous area. Detailed investigations proved these anomalies to be related to faults and fractures which in several cases have been found to be mineralized. Drilling is planned with preliminary results expected by late 1974.

In the past thirty years, there have been a large number of ownership changes in the industrial minerals arena and many medium to large companies have made industrial mineral acquisitions. Industrial minerals are exceedingly important to the achievement and maintenance of a high standard of living in the United States and in other developed countries. In the developed countries of the world the value of industrial minerals exceeds the values of the metallic minerals. In the U.S., the value of our industrial minerals is some 2 112 times that of the value of our metallic minerals. Almost every single thing we use or touch in our daily lives can be related to an industrial mineral. Examples are the construction industry, agriculture, ceramics, paper, paint, plastics, electronics, glass, petroleum, and many more in which an industrial mineral or minerals playa functional role. Industrial minerals are exceedingly diverse in their values, properties, and applications. Sand and gravel is an example of an essential industrial mineral commodity which has a low price but moves in very high volumes. Geographic location of this commodity is critical because of transportation costs. High calcium limestone or marble has a moderately high price particularly if it is white enough for use as a pigment or extender. This moves in moderately high tonnages and location is not as critical be-cause it can be shipped for considerable distances and still be competitive. Some specialty industrial minerals such as a white tale or white bentonite sells at a high price at low volumes and geographic location is not a major factor in marketing. Prices of industrial minerals do not tend to be cyclic and generally keep up with inflationary increases. Because of the diversity of industrial minerals very careful analyses of acquisitions or divestitures must be undertaken by buyers and/or sellers in order to prevent serious mistakes.

An engineering endeavor involves the creation of an expansive, environmentally conscious reinforced sloped MSE wall system. The objective is to enlarge a flat mining work area. Situated in southern Arizona, this mine is dedicated to extracting essential resources such as Manganese, zinc, silver, and lead, crucial for advancing clean and renewable energy initiatives. The project necessitates the implementation of a Mechanically Stabilized Earth retention system. This system aims to both expand the mine’s working area and facilitate access to underground tunnels. The expansion pad must be robust enough to endure the substantial loads exerted by heavy mining machinery. The wall’s reinforcement components are strategically designed to counteract the challenges posed by aggressive soil conditions with low resistivity. Furthermore, they must be resilient against potential damage during installation. The system’s ease of transportation is crucial due to challenging access conditions, and its design must allow for efficient drainage. A significant consideration is the integration of a face system that fosters vegetation growth and seamlessly merges with the existing flora of the area. In addition, plans include the construction of an access road downslope from the wall. The chosen solution involves a reinforced sloped system with a 70-degree incline. The wall’s surface is adorned with an erosion control mat, intended to promote the proliferation of vegetation. For added durability, the wire basket units are equipped with galvanized wire featuring a polymer coating. High tensile strip bonded geogrids, featuring a robust polyester core, provide essential reinforcement. The completed wall is an impressive feat, spanning 1500 feet in length and soaring to a height of 45 feet. It stands as a testament to innovative engineering in harmony with environmental and functional considerations.

"A beautiful America will require the effort of government at every level, of business, and of private groups. Above all it will require the concern and action of individual citizens, alert to danger, determined to improve the quality of their surroundings, resisting blight, demanding and building beauty for themselves and their children." "Improvement of our environment" has become a cause much like "motherhood". The increased awareness of the public concerning this subject makes it most unpopular for anyone to be involved in anything that seemingly is detrimental to our environment. And this awarement goes far beyond our biggest pollution problem in America - the distribution of paper, abandoned automobiles, beer cans and other garbage by our enlightened society along every city, highway, trout stream, river and mountain in America. In fact, the greatest awarement comes because of the "sensational" reporting and writing in our various national communication media, wherein the same voting citizens who so generously distribute their refuse about the countryside are emotionally aroused and duped into transferring what is truly a national problem onto the shoulders of a few industries - notably and particularly the mineral extraction industry. Certainly mankind is more and more stumbling over his own garbage daily, a fact that is easier to sell a citizen of one of our large cities than a resident of the wide open spaces of the west. Yet even in the Rocky Mountain states, the "Land of Sky Blue Waters", the "Big Sky Country", and particularly in Salt Lake valley smog is not unknown. Pollution and littering have become problems that need to be faced squarely. In North Dakota alone it has been estimated that one section of farm land each year flows down the mighty Missouri and the greatest producer of sediment is now reported to be the highway department.

In considering the use of underground space for civil works functions, there are several criteria that must be met if transfer of any of them is to occur. It is important to recognize that these criteria involve social and political as well as conventional engineering and economic considerations. It is the purpose of this report to identify certain of these criteria and develop a set of measures that will permit the evaluation of the potential benefit of transferring civil works functions underground. The work reported here was completed for the ASCE and is contained in the report, Undergound Space, 1973. If one examines the total direct and indirect economic return from the location of civil works in subsurface rather than surface space, sizeable benefits accrue. This occurs largely because design, construction, operating and maintenance costs of these systems are highly dependent upon the forces exerted on these systems by the surface enviroment itself. Transferring of these facilities to underground space would eliminate a large segment of those costs. It is equally true that civil works functions compete with other uses for surface space and generate significant conflicts with these competing uses. Highway construction takes land from other productive uses. Electrical transmission lines conflict in terms of safety and aesthetics with adjacent social activities. Assuming that construction costs can be made equivalent, the analyses in the previous report indicate that the locating of all civil works functions underground would yield an annual net savings to the society of the order of 60 billion dollars. The Greek Cement Industry is a vital sector of our economy. With an annual production of cement over 15.5 million tonnes, it contributes significantly to the national gross domestic product (G.D.P.). The cement industry, as other mineralogical transformation process industries (lime, glass, ceramics, extractive metallurgy etc.), is high energy intensive. Each tonne of cement produced requires not only large amounts of fuels (coal, fuel oil), but additionally a significant quantity of electrical power as well. All fuels consumed by the Greek Cement Industry are imported and energy accounts for one third of the cement production cost. Therefore, it is of interest of the community and the industry to increase energy efficiency, to reduce the quantities of fuels consumed in the cement manufacturing process. It is also known that like almost all manufacturing processes, the cement industry produces large amounts of CO2 (combustion of fuels, de-carbonization of limestone and use to electricity). The utilization of wastes (principally as alternative fuels, scrap tires, spent solvents etc.) is compatible with the general principles of waste management and it is also a common practice in other European and developed countries. In the present paper the economic, social and environmental benefits provided by the recycle process of the various wastes in the Greek cement plants are extensively analyzed. From the whole work, it was concluded that such a practice: - replaces a significant percentage of imported fossil fuels in the cement manufacturing process, - maximizes the recovery of energy and also ensures their safe disposal, - produces overall environmental benefits by reducing releases to air, water and land, - prevents resource depletion of valuable non-renewable fossil fuels, - overcomes the need for the construction of dedicated incineration facilities, - contributes positively to the principles of the sustainable development.

The minerals industry contributes to the economic growth, prosperity and quality of life of nations, particularly in areas where there might be limited opportunities for employment in other sectors. However, notwithstanding their economic importance, the minerals extraction and processing industries are considered to have significant impacts on the surrounding environment. In recent years many mines have implemented modern monitoring technology and modelling of the monitored environmental parameters to provide scientifically proven indicators about the state of the environment. The flexibility required by the minerals industry to respond dynamically to a changing natural, social and economic environment has become a major consideration. Whilst the notion of continuous improvement is embodied within most environmental management systems, what is now required is a structured audit trail which tracks the flow of resources through the production process to the ultimate environmental impact associated with their consumption, transformation and disposal. Imperial College is coordinating an EC funded project, which is developing a methodology to minimise the ?full life-cycle? impact of metalliferous mining projects, adopting an integrated approach to production and process design, and the costs involved. In order to develop a life cycle assessment (LCA) system that will incorporate different types of data related to the minerals extraction operations, a data inventory was designed and coded in an object-relational database model. The calculation procedures accounting for the input/output balance of the alternative scenarios for mining production, processing, waste disposal, monitoring, and their financial implications are being programmed into a software system. This paper presents the rational and innovative aspects of this work. The methodology developed for the life cycle database is illustrated for the mining production and gaseous emissions components of the system.

HARRY HINDS: Our first speaker today is Dr. John Wilson. Dr. Wilson is chair and Union Pacific/Rocky Mountain Energy Professor in mining engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla. He has previously held senior management positions with Trans- African Mining Ltd., Anglo American Corporation, Consolidation Coal Company, Smith International Inc., Adams Resources Inc., and Golder Associates. John started his mining career as a coal miner in the coal fields of northern England. Dr. Wilson received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Durham, his master's degree from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, and his doctorate from the University of Witwatersrand, all in mining engineering. Today, Dr. Wilson is going to address the subject "Hiring Recent College Graduates Versus Hiring Experienced Mining Engineers." Please welcome Dr. Wilson. DR. JOHN WILSON: The advantages and disadvantages of hiring engineers directly out of school or those with some experience are often discussed among mining company managers. The choice is essentially dependent on the culture of each company, the company's maturity and strategic direction, and the growth or phaseout plans in vogue at the time of the decision. Generally, major, established mining companies employ entry-level college graduates and train them, introduce them to company culture, include them in a succession plan to replace retirees, fill vacancies, and provide management to direct future growth of the company. However, some large companies take a different approach. During restructuring, down-sizing, etc., some companies do not hire college graduates directly from school. Rather, they tend to recruit from other companies or absorb valuable personnel available following acquisitions or mergers. While this is a logical approach, it seldom provides for the future management and leadership needs of the company. A clear example of this failure is found when reviewing the hiring practices, or lack thereof, in the coal industry of the 1950s.

INTRODUCTION The Empire Mine is an iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing facility operated by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Owners of the mine are Inland Steel, LTV Steel, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel and Cleveland-Cliff s. The orebody is a fine-grained, low grade iron formation with magnetite as the primary constituent. Also present are iron carbonates, iron silicates, chert, hematite, goethite and quartz. The original six concentrating lines were started in late 1963. Successive expansions of ten lines in 1967, five lines in 1974 and 3 lines in 1979 have resulted in Empire reaching a present annual capacity of 8.0 million long tons of pellets. The Empire flowsheet was developed over several years of laboratory bench testing, pilot plant testing and testing of a full-scale primary autogenous grinding circuit. Since the original flowsheet was established, modifications have been made based on pilot plant and full-scale plant tests. The present flowsheet for three sections of the concentrator consists of one stage of crushing, two stages of closed circuit autogenous grinding, two stages of magnetic separation, one stage of hydraulic concentration and two stages of flotation (rougher and scavenger). The flowsheet for the fourth section of the concentrator (Empire 4) is the same as the first three sections, except a crusher has been added to crush excess pebbles. The Empire 4 flowsheet appears in the at- tached figure. PRIMARY GRINDING CIRCUIT FLOWSHEET Empire has a total of 24 individual grinding lines. However, at the present time, Line 1 is not being used for processing crude ore. The primary mill on Line 1 is now grinding flux stone for fluxed pellet production and the secondary mill is being used as a ball mill to grind rougher flotation tailings prior to a scavenger flotation circuit.

The Research and development review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. The competitiveness of the US mining industry in a world market depends on many factors. The introduction of new and innovative methods, though, can have a significant, long-term impact. As industry cuts back its own long- term research and development efforts, the federal government continues to provide the major support for mining and minerals research. The US Bureau of Mines works with the mining industry and the academic community to develop innovative concepts for the mining and processing of non-fuel minerals. The Bureau’s research focuses on exploration and mining technology, minerals and materials science, processing technology, health and safety and environmental technology. Mine design A conical caving system, being designed by the Bureau, would allow the development of low-grade ore bodies, early startup at lower initial capital costs and increased safety and versatility in development and production. This method is a form of mass caving that allows the ore to be drawn from a central loading point at the bottom of the cone- shaped caving zone (Fig. 1). A simulation laboratory model and computer analysis show initial promise for predicted performance. For tabular, flat-lying ore deposits, the Bureau is investigating a version of the Finnish slot-and-fill system. For this total extraction method, a pattern of rectangular panels is laid out. One panel is extracted in a series of parallel slots and is replaced by alternating-row pillars of backfill. After one panel is mined, equipment and operations are transferred to another panel. By transforming this rectangular layout to a curvilinear geometry, one continuous spiral can be mined without re positioning equipment. Instead of parallel slots and pillars aligned in a rectangle, the slots and pillars are arranged in a spiral.

What happens when the skull and crossbones goes on a product? In the case of cancer warnings, the consequences can be severe. If the label contains the term "lung carcinogen", you might expect to compensate a lot of smokers, meet a lot of expensive lawyers, be counseled by equally expensive consultants and pay sharply elevated insurance premiums, if you are able to obtain coverage at all. At the extreme, you may face plant shutdowns, job losses or even Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Regardless of how you fare, you are likely to learn some very disconcerting things about the risk evaluation and regulatory system which required you to label in the first place. If a particular material or product does pose a health risk, you are obliged both legally and morally to warn those potentially exposed. Once that warning appears on the label, however, the consequences are often beyond your control. You and your embattled product become part of a legal/regulatory system which has a life of its own. Therefore, the issue of health labeling is not so much whether one warns but rather whether the warning itself is justified and the reasonableness of what happens afterwards. It is this matter of justification and reasonableness, particularly of cancer warnings, which this paper addresses. Until, as they say, your ox has been gored, we tend to believe that risk is determined by the best available technology and expertise We expect that risk evaluators appreciate the ramifications of their work and place things in proper perspective; that risk has been appropriately demonstrated before it is publicized and regulated; that the time-honored concept of prudence, to err on the side of safety, has not been excessively stretched. Plants obtain nutrients from both air and soil. They absorb carbon dioxide mainly from the air, although some carbon dioxide may be dissolved in soil water which is absorbed by plant roots. Carbon dioxide, a gaseous form of carbon and oxygen, supplies the carbon which usually makes up 50% or more of plant structure. Growing plants use water more than any other biological substance. Plant nutrients dissolve in soil water and enter the plant via root absorption. Water is then given off into the air as the plant breathes or transpires. Water also supplies hydrogen and oxygen to plants. Plant roots absorb nutrient cations or anions by contact exchange with soil clay particles. Inorganic or mineral nutrients essential to plants are supplied through the soil. Inorganic or mineral composition of plants usually is less than 5% of their weight. In most crop-growing areas, much of this nutrition is inadequately supplied from soil reserves and must be provided by fertilizers. The role of the fertilizer industry is to provide economical, efficient, good quality fertilizers to improve or maintain soil productivity for optimum crop production. The essential plant nutrients other than carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen which often must be added to soils or plants are categorized as primary nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), secondary nutrients (calcium, magnesium, and sulfur), and micronutrients (boron, chlorine, copper iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc). These classifications are based on quantity of nutrients utilized by plants and do not imply their function or degree of necessity. One point of major significance to the fertilizer industry is that not all fertilizer minerals contain the plant nutrients in a chemical form available to the plant. A product which may be considered a fertilizer mineral may require substantial processing or treatment before it becomes useful as a nutrient source or fertilizer.

Ventilation and refrigeration strategies for the 3000/3500 orebodies, Mount Isa Mines, Australia were reviewed. The orebodies lie between 1,200 and 1,800 m below surface and are characterised by steep geothermal gradients, intensively mechanised stoping methods and high ambient air temperatures in summer. Providing acceptable working conditions under these situations is difficult and costly. The ventilation air quantity required in the 3000/3500 orebodies exceeds 550 m3/s when the production rate is greater than 2.5 million tonnes per year. The maximum quantity that can be supplied and exhausted using the existing intake and return ventilation system is estimated at about 630 m3/s. For production rates greater than 3 million tonnes per year, either new intake and return airways will need to be developed or innovative approaches such as controlled partial recirculation used. A description is given of technical and economic investigations conducted at Mount Isa into controlled partial recirculation. During these investigations, a major field trial of a controlled partial recirculation system was undertaken with results indicating that an acceptable working environment can be achieved practically and economically utilising this approach. The cost involved in controlled partial recirculation for supplying the required ventilation quantity when the production of 3000/3500 orebodies exceeds 3 million tonnes per year is examined. A cost comparison between recirculation and other conventional alternatives such as new surface shaft or underground booster fans is included. The results indicate that the option of a new surface shaft will incur a high initial capital cost and moderate annual operating costs. The alternative of underground booster fans will necessitate a moderate capital cost and very high operating costs. Controlled partial recirculation, in this case, offers both the lowest capital and operating costs of the three options evaluated.

This paper deals with theoretical considerations and practical applications of ventilation network calculations, based on mass flow rates and performed by computer simulation in our deepest operating mine - Creighton. The paper also deals with natural ventilation. In the usually accepted air-flow theory, the air is assumed to behave like an incompresssible medium. This introduces considerable error where temperature and pressure changes are great. Therefore, any study of the air flow in deep mines, must take into account compressibility. Basing ventilation calculations on mass flow allows a distinction to be made between air leakage and such quantity changes which occur due to air density changes. The energy which is required to convey one pound of air through a mine can be obtained by adding all head losses hL (ft-lb) of the ventilation paths through which the air flows. However, this total energy will not be correctly expressed in a compressible fluid by summing all pressure losses PL = hL x d (ft-lb/ft3 = lb/ft2) d = density. There is a law of mass conservation, but no law of volume conservation. Natural ventilation is caused by the conversion of heat into mechanical energy and not by the difference in upcast and downcast densities, as often believed. In an existing mine natural ventilation can be determined correctly by plotting a pressure volume diagram and measuring the area ? [ ] vdP = hN, where v = specific volume, or by measuring the sum of all friction losses and work provided by a fan. These procedures are tedious. The natural ventilation head (hN) can be approximated by the equaticn hN =[ ] tdZ. Where T is the average absolute temperature, t air temperature and Z elevation. In Prof. R. Greuer's computer program this determination of hN is automatically done for every mesh of the network.

Clay minerals can be a source of problems in heap leaching operations. The ore for many heap leach operations is commonly acid-sulfate alteration zone rocks which may be found in hot springs deposits as well as the supergene zone of other near- surface gold deposits. Clays can be important constituents of these ores. Swelling clays, such as smectite, can come loose from the agglomerated ore, migrate within the heap, concentrate in pore spaces and often plug up flow channels in the heap Cement is often added to the ore as a binder during the agglomeration process. Lime is added for pH control. Their presence, combined with the sodium cyanide commonly used to leach, can raise the pH of the leach solution to 10 or even 12. This very alkaline solution can cause dissolution of some mineral Some clays, such as kaolinite, are not very stable in high pH solutions. They can be dissolved and reprecipitated as other clay species if sufficient silica and the appropriate cations are available in solution. Silica gels and amorphous materials can also be created from the dissolved kaolinite and other minerals and act as retardants to the flow of leach solutions in the heap. Therefore, before a heap leach operation is built, the operator should evaluate the clays in the ore and test the agglomeration procedure. It is important to know not only the mineralogy and the chemistry of the leach environment but how the minerals and solutions interact and what the products of this interaction are. A hypothesis is presented in this paper that expanding smectite- bearing clays can be generated within the heap. How and why this happens will be explained.

The outlook for coal continued to improve in 1980, fueling expectations that a long-awaited boom is at hand. The surprising surge in coal exports contributed to the latest wave of optimism. Overseas exports hit 66 Mt in 1980, buoyed by a significant increase in demand for steam coal, up from 1979's 2.3 Mt to 15 Mt in 1980. US coal production rose 6.9% to 750 Mt in 1980 and total coal consumption increased 8.1% to about 725 Mt, due primarily to higher world oil prices and setbacks in the US nuclear power industry. Yet the industry is beset with problems-both internal and external. Although demand for US coal is growing, the industry's excess productive capacity is estimated at over 90 Mt/a. Public utilities, where real increases in coal consumption must come, are still moving slowly, blaming delays on antipollution equipment costs. Coal supplies are uncertain, subject to the vagaries of the UMW. For the sixth time since 1964, the coal industry and UMW failed to renew their labor contract without a national strike, reinforcing the perception held overseas that the US is not a reliable supplier. The expected boom in coal exports will, in part, depend on our ability to assure foreign buyers that US sources are dependable. The US industry is also plagued by inadequate facilities linking mines and consumers: inadequate rail systems, coal ports, and barges, For US producers to be competitive, ports must be expanded, rail lines improved, and harbors dredged to allow 136-kt ships to load coal. The im¬provements will require an enormous commitment and investment. Despite these major problems and unresolved issues, two factors continue to favor an increased reliance on coal as an energy source: abundant US reserves and coal's comparative price advantage. Coal's performance in the 1980s may at last exceed its promise.

The financial analyst's job is to make an objective appraisal of the investment opportunities which exist within the various industries under his supervision within the context of the economic model provided by his firm and the a climate of investor sentiments. Industry analysis is critical. When a major investment trend develops, usually the stock of all companies within the specific industry react in the same direction. I should emphasize here, however, that an investment trend is influenced by the economic outlook, but economics is not the only determinant - investor psychology and arbitrary political factors may be of equal or greater importance. Part of our job is to recognize trends early and determine whether they are valid. Following industry analysis, the analyst must examine the specific companies within that industry since some companies usually react more violently than others to industry trends, whether they be favorable or adverse. To simplify the process of evaluating an investment opportunity, it is convenient to isolate three types of factors which have a bearing on every sort of business although the degree of influence of each factor may vary from industry to industry. These categories are, 1) independent or external factors insofar as they are beyond the control of corporate management, 2) interdependent factors insofar as influence may be exerted by industry-wide action, and 3) dependent factors covering the area of internal decisions which are basically under the control of the individual corporate managers. Although the title of this paper, "The Corporate Use of Cash Flow," is only one segment of the third category, it may be useful to continent on the first two categories as well. The independent factors may be either economic or governmental. The economic factors include cyclicality which may be very high in the case of the basic commodity industries or relatively low as in the case of utilities. Underlying growth rates, another independent factor, may range from the business equipment industry with an annual growth rate of 14% through the electric utility industry with a growth rate of about 7% per year to the
