As a consequence of the oil crisis of the 70?s, the commercial value of coal increased very sharply and an upward trend in coal prices although now less pronounced, continues today. The graph shown in figure 1 illustrates the trend in the F.O.B. price of U.S. metallurgical coal. This trend occurs during a time when mechanized mining is firmly established as a means of production throughout the coal mining world. With modem methods of mining, mechanical cleaning is a necessity and quality control is no longer entirely dependant upon coal face practice. The efficiency of fine coal recovery is of vital economic importance to present day operations and good practice in this field contributes significantly to improving profitability. Numerous processes are available for the duty and this paper discusses one such system, namely the practice of froth flotation.

The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located about 80 km (50 miles) north of Elko, NV. It produces approximately 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. The joint venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining and 30% by Meridian Gold. Independence Mining is the operator. The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 by mining a series of open-pit mines. The discovery of deeper ores during early 1990s made it neccessary for the operation to mine a large portion of its annual production by underground mining methods. Underground production started in 1993 at the West Generator Mine. This was followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is scheduled to produce about 3.9 t (128,000 oz) in 1997.

Your challenge is to transform those concepts into action and give life to the ideas discussed here. The notion of achieving limitless productivity produces peak levels of enthusiasm in today's mining leaders. Highly-productive mines do not happen by chance --they are created by progressive leaders. The quest for productivity improvement, exclusively through capital investment and technological advances, is an incomplete process. Improvement, through capital and technology, is often not achieved because we fail to energize the true potential and commitment in our employees.

Coal mining today is confronted with numerous problems, all of which affect in some way the ability of the operator to produce profitably. The major endeavor, therefore, is a quest for cost lowering techniques. Complete belt haulage from shuttle car to river barge appeared to be a step in such a direction. A deep look into all aspects proved this to be more involved than just the installation of such a belt line. With this paper, we will attempt to present to you the problems and requirements of design and installation of an all-belt haulage system, believed to be the longest underground belt installation in the world at this time. The first and most important item is the justification of an all-belt haulage system. The following is a brief history of the coal property and the facts affecting our decision.

Electronic ore sorting is a coarse particle beneliciating process which performs a function which in the past was primarily achieved through the use of hand picking belts. Photometric ore sorting is capable of separating waste from mineral bearing rock having a distinct difference in surface light reflectance levels. This type of ore sorter can be applied to gold and silver ores which are contained in quartz veining. Photometric ore sorting has been used at gold mines in South Africa as well as the Black Pinc silver mine in Montana. A new ore sorter has recently been developed with precious metal ores in mind. This ore sorter is capable of sorting ores on both photometric and conductivity sensing parameters. The first production machine has been installed at a gold mine near Beardmore, Ontario and currently is being used to process low grade waste dumps.

The operation described in-this paper will be confined to the Nemacolin Mine of The Buckeye Coal company, Nemacolin, Pennsylvania.' This mine is-located on the Monongahela River approximately sixty miles south of Pittsburgh. The mining is in the Pittsburgh seam that has an average thickness of 88 to 90 inches. The current practice is to mine approximately 80 inches, leaving 8 to 10 inches of roof coal. All of the coal produced is used solely for by-product coking by the parent Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, Youngstown, Ohio. Eight to ten inches of top coal are left by the miners to prevent air slacking of the draw slate. In addition, this top coal which will float at the washing gravity has a very high ash and sulphur content, and when mined, seriously affects the quality of the clean coal product.

Industry requires higher speed sheet stacking. High speed sheet stacking requires equipment and techniques to solve several inherent difficult problems, such as the tendency for sheets to sail, and the need for a means to absorb the kinetic energy of the sheet without damaging the sheet. Accurate alignment of the sheets on the stack is another problem difficult to solve. The paper first analyzes the process of sheet handling into its basic elemental steps. It then describes equipment and techniques presently used for moderate sheet handling speeds, with emphasis on how each step in the stacking process is accomplished by the present equipment. The limitations to speed-up of present equipment is discussed. New high speed equipment, either recently introduced to the market, or in the process of development, is described. Magnetic, air float and vacuum conveyor stackers are compared.

Beneficiation of-low-grade nonmetalliferous mineral deposits by electronic color sorting is currently undergoing a period of rapid development. For those deposits in which the specific gravity, strength, soundness, electric and magnetic properties of the ore and gangue are similar the possibility of separation by color, reflectivity, or fluorescence offers hope for utilization of much poorer quality ore than previously thought possible. For those ores in which consistency of color is required or for which a dry process is preferred, the electronic color sorter is particularly adaptable. Electronic color sorters were first designed to process agricultural products and were small low-capacity units. However, the recent introduction of larger machines designed to process 6-in, diameter ore at a rate of 30 to 50 tph (Anonymous, 1966a), has brought color sorting into the capacity range required by many mineral producers.

Mr. Chairman, members of SME, and guests It is indeed a pleasure to have the opportunity to appear before this group. The topic of this paper is, "Current Trends in Related Industries and Their Influence on Electric Shovel Design and Size". Before getting into the major items, it is well to point out that this text will deal with loading shovels primarily, since their application is almost universal in major open pit mining operations throughout the world. Related industries influence our design in many ways. For the sake of simplicity, these industries will be broken down into two major categories. The first category to be discussed will include industries that will indirectly influence design and size, while the second category will include industries whose products can directly be incorporated by the engineer in the design of shovels.

Because so many interrelated technical, economic, legal and political factors are involved in evaluation of commercial mineral deposits, it is common practice today to assign such work to a team of specialists including geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, lawyers, and economic evaluation experts. Each member of the team plays an important role; the role of the geologist is particularly important. The geologist involved with evaluation of fluorspar deposits needs all the geologic and economic training and experience required for evaluation of metallic mineral deposits. Few, if any, industrial or metallic minerals occur in so many geologic environments as fluorite. Fluorspar, and aggregate of rock and mineral matter containing enough fluorite to make a commercial deposit (ore), is somewhat more limited in its modes of occurrence than fluorite, but it too is found in a variety of environments.

We have worked on several flooded pits from coal-mining activities in the former East Germany, as well as ones associated with hard- rock mining, including the B-zone pit discussed in the above technical paper. We found the paper to be a useful summary, but, unfortunately, it failed to give an adequate comparison of the physical limnology of the flooded pits, which is an essential component. While the title suggests that the primary focus of the review is physical limnology, it appears that it is essentially pit-lake chemistry being presented. Physical limnology requires that factors such as fetch, latitude, light penetration, relation to ground water table, methods of flooding and the physical shape of the pits be defined. These physical aspects of a pit interact with the chemical and biological processes taking place in it, all of which contribute to the character of a water body. Few of these physical aspects are presented, however. The conclusion that the authors reach suggests that meromixis may be a condition that would serve as an effective containment mechanism for contaminants in a pit. Although this may be desirable, such limnological conditions are not clearly supported by the data presented for any of the pits. These data should be summarized to facilitate comparison between the same structural units of the pit water - the epi- and metalimnion for example. The thermocline depth is a reflection of the physical forces mixing the water body, and pit dimensions affect these forces. Due to the use of different scales in Figs. 2 through 5, it is difficult to determine whether the thermocline is at the expected depth, because the fetch is not given. Moreover, the status of a water body cannot be determined unless measurements cover a period of at least one year, and depth profiles are completed to represent the entire depth of the pit. This shortcoming is most notable in the case of the Berkeley pit, where data are given for depths of only 20 and 35 m (66 and 115 ft), although the pit is reported to be 242 m (794 ft) deep. Limnological data to define the status of the pit water have to be collected at regular intervals, for the same parameters. The authors present temperature measurements for 1-m (3.3-ft) intervals, but fail to use that interval for other parameters, such as dissolved oxygen or, in some cases, for contaminant concentrations. Furthermore, the profiles for the deepest part of the pit display only part of the picture, because pits are rarely conical. Profiles can be considered to represent the status of a water body only after other stations in the pit have been monitored regularly and the consistency is determined. For example, fresh water, which can enter a pit at any depth, would interfere with the proposed meromictic conditions. Similarly, organic material at the bottom of a pit, such as the fish-waste deposited in the Gunnar pit, contribute to oxygen consumption. Oxygen depletion alone is not indicative of meromixis. It is interesting to note that the Dpit arsenic concentrations could possibly be slightly higher than the B-zone pit concentrations at depth, although this is difficult to determine accurately when a log scale is used for the D-pit and not for the B-zone pit. In our investigations, we noted arsenic removal in the B-zone pit bottom water, which was due to the formation of particles that are relegated to the newly forming sediment in the bottom of the pit. Particle-carrying contaminants form due to a combination of geochemical and biological factors and TSS contributed from erosion of the upper parts of the pit walls, whereas the settling out of particles from the water column is controlled by the physical conditions or turn over, for example. during ice cover in the B-zone pit. Although meromictic conditions for flooded pits may be desirable at decommissioning, this would depend largely on the physical conditions of the pit, because, under no circumstances, would this water be of desirable ground-water quality. Under meromictic conditions, acidity, if an environmental issue, may be reduced by microbial acid-neutralizing activity, and several heavy metals may form more or less stable sulphitic compounds. These may stay suspended in the water if conditions are such that they are not relegated to the sediments, i.e., in the absence of turnover. These processes do not take place in meromictic conditions only, but meromixis does require autochthonous and/or allochthonous organic substrate supplies, which are generated under aerobic conditions. Specific limnological (biological, chemical and physical) features of the pit lake under consideration have to be defined, such that water quality parameters can be predicted, and the objectives of the decommissioning activities, environ-

INTRODUCTION High energy breaking is an alternative to using ex¬plosives in underground secondary breaking operations. It also is a means of upgrading conventional hand-held breakers, manual sledge-hammer breaking, and scaling bar operations. Major areas of application are in sec¬ondary breaking over grizzlies and at drawpoints. Other applications include breaking down ripping lips in longwall seam mining, scaling in stopes and rooms, general demolition work, and roadway maintenance. There is considerable interest in high-energy impact breakers for use in primary ore breaking, but, as of 1977, all such applications have been only experimental (duToit, 1973; Joughin, 1976; Wayment and Grantmyre, 1976). EQUIPMENT Essentially, a high-energy impact hammer is a boom¬mounted pneumatically or hydraulically actuated breaker. The machine basically consists of a piston that oscillates in a housing and impacts the end of a tool or moil thrust against the rock. The force applied to the rock primarily depends upon the impact energy of the piston-the higher the impact or blow energy, the greater the force and, thus, the greater the rock break¬age. Among drill and breaker designers, a common expression for blow energy is "force of blow." Hand-held breakers are limited to blow energies of about 140 J (100 ft-lb), because the operator is unable to handle heavier machines efficiently or to absorb the recoil energy resulting from higher blow energies. How¬ever, these restrictions do not apply to boom mounted breakers; machines with blow energies on the order of 4000 J (3000 ft-lb) and higher are available commer¬cially for underground use. There is considerable evi¬dence to show that increasing the blow energy also in¬creases the efficiency of the breaking operation; i.e., more rock is broken per unit of energy expended (Grantmyre and Hawkes, 1975). Thus, there is a trend to higher blow-energy machines, particularly where high¬strength rocks are to be broken. In relation to rock breaking, the blow rate of boom¬mounted impact breakers is not as important as it is for rock drills. This is because the breaker must be moved over the work surface between blows. The blow rate is governed eventually by the power supply, and typical blow rates range between 200 and 600 blows per minute. As a general rule, light blow-energy machines have higher blow rates than heavier machines. Table 1 lists most of the boom-mounted impact breakers that were available commercially during 1977, and it gives details of the blow energies and machine weights. Restrictions are placed on the blow energy by the machine weight and size, and by the strength of the boom. Typically, boom-mounted impact hammers have a blow-energy to mass ratio of about 1.5, with lower values for lighter machines and higher values for heavier machines. In addition to supporting the hammer weight, the boom also has to absorb the recoil energy of the blow, which can be on the order of 1400 J (1000 ft-lb) for large hammers operating in a horizontal mode. Interesting exceptions to the general run of impactors are the Joy HEFTI hydraulic hammers. In these machines, the piston impacts onto a fluid cushion that is positioned between the piston and the impact tool. This approach allows very high piston velocities, over 30 m/s (100 fps), to be used without the risk of break¬ing the piston or impact tool. Steel on steel impacts must be limited to impact velocities of about 10 m/s (35 fps) due to the high impact stresses generated; thus, increased blow energies can be achieved only by increas¬ing the piston size. The Joy 514 HEFTI®, listed in Table 1, has a blow energy of 27 100 J (20,000 ft-lb), but, as of 1977, the machine has been used underground only on an experimental basis. Using a fluid cushion between the piston and the impact tool allows the use of light pistons, reducing the overall machine weight. The recoil energy, which must be absorbed by the boom for a given blow energy, is directly proportional to the piston to machine mass ratio, and operating with light pistons provides an addi¬tional benefit in reducing the requisite boom size. Both pneumatic and hydraulic hammers are avail¬able commercially. Although hydraulic hammers are a relatively recent development, they already outnumber the pneumatic machines in use. INTRODUCTION In 1957, diamond drilling on a magnetic anomaly indicated an extensive zone of copper mineralization on what is now the Craigmont Mines property. By mid¬1958, drilling established a copper ore body. Milling commenced in September 1961 at 4536 t/d (5000 stpd) and by the end of October 1977 the mine had produced 339 662.04 t (374,363.9 st) of copper. At present, two-thirds of the mill feed is derived from underground operations and one-third from low-grade surface stockpiles. Craigmont Mines is situated 209 km (130 air miles) northeast of Vancouver (see Fig. 1), 16 km (10 miles) west of the town of Merritt, a logging, ranching, and mining community of about 7000 people. It is serviced by paved highways, Canadian Pacific Railway, British Columbia Hydro, and Inland Natural Gas Co. Water is pumped from the Nicola River, a distance of 6 km (4 miles) and a lift of 244 m (800 ft). In March 1967, the open pit mining operations at Craigmont Mines reached their economic limit and were suspended. Before this, it had been decided that a sub¬level caving method of underground mining would be used to supply ore to the concentrator after the cessation of open pit production. This chapter describes the fac¬tors influencing the choice of mining method, some of the problems encountered, mining practices, and results. GEOLOGY The ore bodies of upper Triassic age are located in a limy horizon striking east-west, closely paralleling the intrusive Guichon batholith, bounded on the south by rhyolites and on the north by graywackes, and dipping steeply to the south (Figs. 2a, b). The ore bodies are relatively narrow with a maxi¬mum width of 79 m (260 ft), a combined strike length of 853 m (2800 ft), and a vertical extent of 610 m (2000 ft). Chalcopyrite is virtually the only copper mineral, and 20% of the ore zone consists of acid solu¬ble magnetite and hematite. The area has been subjected to considerable faulting and brecciation, which is a major factor in the mining operation. Total geological reserves, at 0.7% Cu cutoff, for the deposit were 22 316 743 t (24,600,000 st) at 1.89% Cu. An additional 5 236 270 t (5,772,000 st) at 0.6% Cu were mined from the open pit. Ground Conditions The waste rocks-graywacke, andesites, and diorite -are relatively incompetent due to the high degree of fracturing and jointing, and all require varying degrees of support. The ore zones are somewhat less fractured; ground support is still required, however, although to a lesser extent than in the country rock. Ground conditions in the main ore body are better than in the smaller, nar¬rower ore bodies. Clayey fault gouge is present in most of the faults; gouge zones may be up to 6 or 9 m (20 or 30 ft) wide. The main ground problems are associated with local weakness rather than pressure. Shape of Ore Bodies (Figs. 2a, b and 3a, b) The main No. 1 ore body is approximately 244 m (800 ft) long and 46 m (150 ft) wide. It extends ver¬tically from the original top of the open pit at 4200 ele¬vation to just below the 3060 level. The No. 2 ore body is approximately 304 m (1000 ft) long, varies from stringer width at the extremities up to 79 m (260 ft) wide, and extends from 3060 level to 2400 level. Both these ore bodies have extensions re¬sulting in additional small irregular bodies. Ore bodies are mostly steep dipping, though part of the Wing ore body, an extension of No. 2 ore body, dips at 0.87 rad (50'). This ore body varies in size, but is approximately 122 m (400 ft) long, 21 m (70 ft) wide, and about 213 m (700 ft) high. No. 1 Limb ore body is a narrow extension of the No. I Main with a vertical extent of 137 m (450 ft), average width of 18 ft (60 ft), a strike length of 152 m (500 ft), and dips steeply at 1.4 rad (80°). No. 1 East is an eastern extension of the No. 1 Main with a vertical extent of 183 m (600 ft), a strike length of 91 m (300 ft), an average width of 30 m (100 ft), and dips at 1.2 to 1.4 rad (70 to 80°). No. 1 South is at the upper west end of the open pit with a vertical extent of 76 m (250 ft), a strike length

Although the physical appearance of excavating equipment doesn't seem to have radically changed over the past decade, important changes within the products and an innovative attitude on the part of the engineer in his design approach is becoming increasingly evident. The new philosophy is to go beyond simple refinements of existing designs that simply produce a machine which further reduces overall cost per ton or per cubic yard of material moved and to do it more efficiently than ever before. Standard ideas and preconceived notions have been discarded and have given way to providing a design and a machine that is best suited to get the job done. Understanding that the application will not always fit the machine, but, in most cases, the machine should fit or suit the application is a foremost consideration in the engineers' design criteria.

Sulfur is a nonmetallic element widely distributed in nature and of great physical and economic importance. It is the 14th most abundant element in the Earth's crust (0.06%) and an important constituent of animal and plant life. Sulfur has been known and used since ancient times for a number of medicinal and industrial uses. At present, most sulfur is used to generate sulfuric acid that is used in a wide variety of industrial processes, particularly the production of fertilizer. Because of this, sulfuric acid (and hence sulfur) consumption is often regarded as a good index of a nation's industrial development. In the past, sulfur was mined from surface occurrences in several geologic environments, and was used in relatively small amounts. With time, the uses of sulfur and sulfuric acid expanded, as has the need for larger quantities of these commodities. Sulfur is now mined from both surface and underground deposits, and is recovered as a byproduct from a number of industrial processes. Despite valiant efforts and years of work by sulfur explorationists and others, many aspects of sulfur mineralization remain controversial. Almost as controversial is the spelling of the word sulfur. The English spelling sulphur commonly is used outside America and in the American sulfur mining industry, but sulfur is the correct American spelling as approved by the American Chemical Society, the American Geological Institute, and many others. Those new to the American sulfur industry often find it puzzling to be reprimanded for using the correct American spelling. Sulfur resources are abundant and widespread, but the extent to which they can be classified as reserves is constrained by pre- vailing prices and extraction technologies. At present, sulfur can be economically mined from very few deposits. The sulfur industry is roughly divisible into two sectors: voluntary (or discretionary) and involuntary (or nondiscretionary). In voluntary production, the mining of sulfur or pyrites is the sole objective, and the recovery of the resource is as complete as economic conditions will allow. During involuntary production, sulfur or sulfuric acid (termed recovered sulfur) are produced as byproducts, and the quantity of the output is dictated by the demand for the primary product. Voluntary sulfur now accounts for only about 35% of the elemental sulfur produced worldwide, and most inves- tigators believe that voluntary sulfur will be less important in the future. Sulfur sources and products are described as follows (after Barker, 1983): Sulfur Sources: Combined sulfur-sulfur that occurs in nature combined with other elements, commonly referring to sulfides and sulfates. Cupriferous pyrites-pyrite containing minor amounts of cop- per sulfides. Hydrogen sulfide-a toxic gas that occurs in petroleum and natural gas. Involuntary sulfur-sulfur produced as a byproduct in response to legislative or process mandates. Native sulfur-naturally occurring elemental sulfur. Nonferrous metal sulfides-opper, lead, zinc, nickel, and molybdenum sulfides that are processed for their metal content. Organic sulfur complex organic sulfur compounds that occur in petroleum, coal, oil shale, and tar sands. Pyrites-iron sulfide minerals that include pyrite, marcasite, and pyrrhotite. Sulfate sulfur-sulfur contained in anhydrite and gypsum. Voluntary sulfur-sulfur produced in response to market demand. Basic Sulfur Products: Acid sludge-contaminated sulfuric acid usually returned to acid plants for reconstitution. Brimstone-synonymous with crude sulfur. Bright sulfur-crude sulfur free of discoloring impurities and bright yellow in color. Broken sulfur-solid crude sulfur crushed to -8 in. Byproduct sulfuric acid-sulfuric acid produced as a byproduct of a metallurgical or industrial process, generally relating to combined sulfur sources. Crude sulfur-commercial nomenclature for elemental sulfur. Dark sulfur-crude sulfur discolored by minor quantities of hydrocarbons, ranging up to 0.3% carbon content. Elemental sulfur-processed sulfur in the elemental form produced from native sulfur or combined sulfur sources, generally with a minimum sulfur content of 99.5%. Formed sulfur-elemental sulfur cast or pressed into particular shapes to enhance handling and to suppress dust generation and moisture retention. Frasch sulfur-elemental sulfur produced from native sulfur sources by the Frasch mining process. Liquid sulfur-synonymous with molten sulfur. Liquid sulfur dioxide-purified sulfur dioxide compressed to the liquid phase. Molten sulfur-crude sulfur in the molten state. Prilled sulfur-solid crude sulfur in the form of pellets produced by cooling molten sulfur in air or water. Recovered sulfur-elemental sulfur produced from combined sulfur sources (including byproduct hydrogen sulfide, but sometimes referring only to sulfur from fossil fuels) by any method. Slated sulfur-solid crude sulfur in the form of slate-like lumps, produced by allowing molten sulfur to solidify on a moving belt. Specialty sulfur-prepared or refined grades of elemental sulfur that include amorphous, colloidal, flowers, precipitated, wettable, flour, and paste sulfur. Sulfur ore-unprocessed ore containing native sulfur.

Newmont Gold Company uses centralized carbon handling facilities to strip loaded carbon from five mills and four leach facilities located along a 38 mile stretch of the Carlin Trend in Nevada. Both Zadra and AARL elution processes are employed at this centralized facility which is located near the company's Gold Quarry operations. The Zadra elution circuit was commissioned in 1985 and later expanded in 1987. This circuit can strip carbon at a rate of 24 tons per day. The AARL elution circuit, commissioned in 1988, also has the capacity to strip 24 tons of carbon per day. Two horizontal, rotating, regeneration kilns are used to reactivate approximately 60% of the stripped carbon before it is returned to the mills or leach facilities. One kiln is located in the Zadra plant, while the other is located in the AARL plant.

Independence Mining Company, Inc. (IMC) has for the past several years processed refractory gold ores at its Jerritt Canyon operation near Elko, Nevada. The ore is typical of those of the Carlin Trend and is refractory due to physical encapsulation of gold in carbon, pyrite, and arsenopyrite. It is also "preg robbing" due to the contained organic carbon that acts as a gold adsorber. Refractory ores require some form of pretreatment before cyanidation to enable economical recovery of gold. The metallurgical facility at Jerritt Canyon is unique in that it consists of two distinct pretreatment methods for the recovery of gold: a chemical process utilizing chlorine and a pyro-metal­lurgical process employing oxidative roasting. This paper pro­vides a comparison of the two methods highlighting flow sheets, pretreatment operation detail, performance comparisons, and pertinent environmental data.

The environment for process engineers today is very different from 20 years ago. The ideas and mathematical description of models for a multitude of different unit operations is an ongoing development. The computer tools to deal with the mathematics are readily available and specialist companies have developed, tested and verified their models. The challenge for the process engineer is to know which package to use and to know whether a particular application is the most accurate for the specific process. Metallurgical simulation programs today are well known and proven. Certain programs are specialized while others are broader based. The needs of each user are dependent on the application. PCS Phosphate operates an open-pit phosphate mine in the central coastal plane of North Carolina. The company has mining and refining facilities located on the south shore of the Pamlico River. Phosphate ore is recovered at the Aurora facility by open-cast mining techniques. Walking draglines and bucketwheel excavators remove the overburden and mine the phosphate ore. The mined ore is slurried about 8 km (5 miles) to the processing plant. At the plant, the phosphate ore slurry is passed through screens to remove material coarser than 2 mm (10 mesh) and then pumped through hydrocyclones to remove material finer than 75 mm (200 mesh). The resulting phosphate and sand mixture is treated with various reagents and subjected to an anionic flotation process. A cationic flotation process removes the sand from the final phosphate concentrate.

Jigs are the most important equipment used in the separation process that exploits the stratification of particulate matter under the influence of hydrodynamic and gravitational forces. Very little is known about the determined mechanisms by which particles of varying density, size, and shape stratify in a moving bed. A model is developed by using the discrete element method to understand the behavior of jig bed. This model is utilized here to study the stratification behavior of the bed and its control. The control action is based on the understanding of the physics of the stratification process within the framework of fuzzy logic. The actions suggested by the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) depend on the current degree of stratification and the existing frequency of the jig cycle. The results show that the FLC achieves efficiency in stratification with minor variations to the jig cycle.
