Process improvement is probably the most widespread objective of mineral process plant operators in the late 1980's. An important part of such improvements is dynamic optimization which involves reacting to inevitable plant disturbances in such a way that productivity is maximized at every instant of time. This paper describes the way in which mathematical models can be and have been used in dynamic optimization. Both off-line and on-line model applications are described.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-economic problems surrounded by sustainability controversies yet continues extraction without considering the balance and finitude of nature. Nature requires restoration of equilibrium if mining and life on earth are to continue. Mining is still practiced according to Agricola’s views and the consequences it has wrought on our planet demand we critically reexamine it from its very core, to its metrics, to its design, to its technology, to how it is taught, and to reconsider its raison d'être in 2017. This paper offers tools to new mining engineers that are required to transform and solve new challenges. The task before us is to formulate an updated core curriculum that meets the demands and realities of the 21st Century. Mining professionals must rethink and reteach how to redesign mines before shovel hits dirt, how to mine with restoration of nature figured in to the mining design. Mining needs a new extractive technology in order to transform the results of its well-known liabilities. Mining has evolved and its future must be different than its past. Our industry is capable of doing this but it needs to be shown the way. INTRODUCTION The statement that ‘mining makes civilization possible’ is of the utmost importance and has the most value to us. We can examine the past and present appropriately to see the future that we are building. Mining must be addressed in a different way that makes a positive difference and improves upon rather than continues to get the negative impacts of the past. See Fig 1. Mining creates disequilibrium in Nature by producing ore, waste, tailing, dilution of resources, toxic, and pollution to its ecosystems. What is next for mining on a limited planet? Delaying the transformation of mining is not an option to developing an updated and modern mining business-as-usual paradigm. It is hurting the essentials of living in a civilization; our livelihood is in danger to the point of unrest in nature as we generate a lot of eco-print by present mining practices. So, we are urged to eliminate this bottleneck in life by employing a different design. This way, we will have a vision on how to sustain our civilization. [1]. This new design, with input from current and future generations, will be our contribution to posterity."

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

"An innovative method to reduce acid rock drainage (ARD) and sediment loading of a recreational lake was used in the Red River watershed in northern New Mexico. The Red River drains a mining district that contains multiple naturally occurring hydrothermal alteration zones that release ARD and sediment to the river during episodic summer rain storms. A lake is near the mouth of the watershed and is filled with water from the river through a sluice gate and diversion. An automated actuator was installed on the sluice gate to close when the river is impacted by high-suspended sediment. Water quality probes were installed at the sluice gate to monitor the river water for turbidity, specific conductivity and water depth. If high turbidity is measured, the sluice gate closes automatically. Remote access is setup with a computer view screen to review the real-time system status. Once the turbidity drops below a threshold, the sluice gate is reopened remotely. The automated sluice gate has successfully reduced the amount of ARD and suspended sediment entering the lake. This reduction has resulted in an improved aquatic habitat for the fishery and benthic macroinvertebrate community. BACKGROUND The Red River is located within the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range in northern New Mexico. The river drains an area of approximately 190 square miles and spans elevations from 6,600 feet at its confluence with the Rio Grande to its headwaters near 12,000 feet (Figure 1). The river generally flows to the west along most if its length.The Red River watershed includes several hydrothermal alteration zones. The alteration zones were created by intrusion of high-silica granites and subvolcanic porphyries, with associated hydrothermal fluids, into the volcanic rocks of the Questa Caldera. The hydrothermal alteration is also responsible for the molybdenum deposits in the area. Rapid chemical weathering and physical erosion of pyrite-rich hydrothermally altered rocks has resulted in the formation of alteration scars. The alteration scars are characterized by steep, erodible slopes with little vegetation and incised gullies. Debris fans from the drainages containing active alteration scars have formed and typically consist of poorly sorted sand and gravel that is distinctly pale yellow in color. Some of the more prominent scars are located in the Hansen, Straight and Hottentot Creek drainages downstream of the town of Red River."

Introduction Americans have long been proud of their ability to recognize a need, define it, and then develop workable solutions. The U.S. underground coal conversion (UCC) program is a good example. In 1974, the need to utilize coal resources that could not be mined was recognized, and Congress gave the Bureau of Mines $1.7 million to gain a better understanding of the UCC technology and its potential applications. Since 1977 when the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) was formed, workable technologies have been tested, the market for underground coal conversion has been recognized, and extensive industrial interest has developed. Perspective The U.S. is blessed with extensive coal resources. Coal supplies about 19% of our national energy needs, yet recently promulgated environmental standards and increasing mining costs have limited direct coal use. UCC potentially can use coal that is economically or technically infeasible to mine because the coal is too thick, deep, dirty, high-ash, and wet; has an excessive angle of dip; or has unpredictable and poor overburden characteristics that make mining unsafe. Coal can be gasified underground or perhaps liquefied below the earth’s surface. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is the prime element of the underground coal conversion program. It enables coal to be converted to gas underground. UCC Coal Resource Recent data show a total U.S. coal resource base of about 6.4 trillion tons. Of this, 1.8 trillion tons might be accessed by UCC, including some minable coal. A commercial UCC process could quadruple roughly the 450 billion tons of U.S. coal reserves, which presently are recoverable by mining. The U.S. coal resources are divided into five sectors. The two most eastern sectors contain relatively thin, swelling bituminous coals that are difficult to gasify. Of the two, the bituminous coal in the Eastern Province is the most difficult because it is deeper than , in the Interior Province and the terrain is more rugged. The sector along the Rocky Mountains contains huge amounts of thick low-rank coals that are the most promising for early development by UCC. The coal has good continuity and the terrain is suitable. INTRODUCTION In the Polish coal mining industry, the Upper Silesian coal basin has an important position. It contributes over 98% of the total coal production of Poland which reached 193 mt in the year 1979. In view of the significant urbanized area in this region as well as the industrial potential, it is important to protect the surface by stowing the mined out underground workings. Approximately 18% of the total production is mined from longwall faces with stowing. However, caved longwall faces are most popular. In the upper Silesian coalfield, approximately 337 highly mechanized longwall faces are in operation. Out of these 337 faces, 301 longwall faces are caved. One of the main requirements for effective and safe coal extraction is a suitable method for strata control. We can divide the complex process of strata control into four steps: 1. Strata investigations 2. Selection of supports for roadways 3. Selection of supports for longwall 4. Rock bursts and other hazards protection STRATA INVESTIGATIONS Estimation of the structure and physico-mechanical properties of the rock mass surrounding the workings is an important constituent of strata control. These factors definitely influence the rock stability, support load, working conditions as well as the mining technology. Complex methods of strata investigations involve a set of indicators enabling the estimation of the stability of the roof rock, strength of the coal seam and load bearing capacity of the floor. The basis for the evaluation of roof stability for a coal seam is the classification according to the resistance to bed separation (1). The bed separation resistance is equal to the strength of the rock in tension perpendicular to the bedding plane. In order to properly classify a rock, it is indispensable to make continuous profiles of the bed separation resistance from the immediate roof up to a distance of three times the thickness of the coal seam. The profiles are developed by utilizing mine roof investigations with the hydraulic borehole penetrometer. (Fig. 1) The penetration resistance is determined by the critical pressure required to cause crushing of the rock by the penetrometer indentor (2). The classification of roof rocks and their ability to cave spontaneously during longwall mining is shown in [Fig. 2]. The measurement of the critical pressure also allows for the determination of the compressive strength of the rock, the index of workability and roof fissuration.

The mineral processing engineer must have some knowledge of mineral identification, and the greater his knowledge in this field, the greater will be his potential to do his own specialty well. Most metal-bearing ores and industrial minerals require processing of some kind to produce a salable product or a material suitable for further processing. The types of treatment are many, but each one is aimed at separating a mineral or family of minerals from others. Obviously, then, it is basic to all mineral processing to identify the minerals present in the raw material and in intermediate and final products resulting from processing. Very often the mineral processing engineer will enter planning while exploration of a mineral prospect is going on. He will examine hand specimens, drill cores and cuttings, bulk samples, and materials in place. He must identify the valuable minerals, their occurrence and associations with other minerals, and the identity of diluents or host rock. An exact and detailed knowledge of the raw material will usually suggest the treatment processes that should be investigated in the development of the most suitable scheme for that particular raw material in that particular location. Physical properties of a mineral often lead directly to a process for separating that mineral from others. Some well-known examples of these are: magnetic separations for such minerals as magnetite, rutile, ilmenite; gravity separations for gold, silver, galena. cassiterite; flotation separation for most sulfides; distillation of mercury from cinnabar; and selective dissolution in specific solvents such as halite or sylvite in water, gold and silver in cyanide solutions, copper oxides, carbonates, sulfates and silicates in dilute sulfuric acid. These processes and many others are described in detail elsewhere in the Hand¬book and so it is not appropriate to give details here, except to emphasize that processing is aided greatly by complete mineral identi¬fication. Developing a treatment scheme for a new mineral discovery is an exciting assignment fag the mineral processing engineer, but much more of the usual work relates to quality control in existing plants. Here too, mineral identification is important. Some processing is aimed toward producing an end product which will meet exacting specifica¬tions regarding purity or allowable diluents. Discussion by A. Unal Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use their in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 in (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two-seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al. (1990), surprisingly, does not give any geological interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics, It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimental variogram as no spatial correlation. This very well known phenomenon is called the pure nugget effect in geostatistics (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978) and perhaps can explain the lack of correlation found for pyritic sulfur content. The lack of correlation found for the total sulfur content may also be explained in the same way because the total sulfur content is dominated by the pyritic sulfur content in this case study. One should notice, however, that the situation may completely be reversed after cleaning the coal. Not all of the inorganic sulfur should be expected to be in the form of pyrite nuggets in a coal seam. It may also be disseminated in the coal seam and it is expected that it follows a certain spatial structure. However, an existing spatial structure may be masked by including a part of the roof rock, rich in sulfides, into the seam thickness in an arbitrary fashion because areas having a sandstone roof sometimes are known to show a higher sulfur content due to the downward percolation of solutions rich in iron sulfides (Clark, 1979). Plants use sulfur in their growth processes. Much of this sulfur is bound organically during peat accumulation and coal formation (Cecil et al., 1978.) This suggests a spatial structure of some sort for the organic sulfur. However, it is not possible to test this hypothesis because the results obtained by the authors for the organic sulfur content are not given in this paper. For this reason, the conclusion that simple average of the nearby samples would provide the best unbiased estimates is questionable for organic sulfur and is not based on any substantial supporting evidence. It is suspected that no spatial structure was detected and this was due to high sampling and laboratory analysis errors. Before concluding that sulfur variability in the seam at the location of study was random, a more detailed study for the disseminated non-pyritic sulfur should have been conducted, not for the sake of scientific curiosity only, but also due to its utmost importance with regard to coal cleaning and emission control. Pyritic sulfur can be cleaned to a considerable extent, whereas organic sulfur can not, making the emission control strategies highly dependent on the spatial distribution of the organic sulfur (Knudsen, 1981). In the light of these facts, one wonders why Barbaro et al. (1990) did not present the results of their study for the sulfate and organic sulfur content. The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. Technology and economies of scale have, in the past decade, brought about the emergence of giant vessels. Meanwhile, to answer the need for rapid dispatch, as a means of combating the proportionately far greater demurrage charges, shiploading and unloading speeds have soared (Ref. 1, 2, 3). As the loading and unloading rates have dramatically increased, so has the cloud of dust grown in unbearable proportions. It not only has threatened to be a real menace to machinery and men, but in certain instances has also seriously jeopardized fish and marine life (Ref. 4). In an era when ecology is king, dust in shiploading and unloading can no longer be shrugged off as a mere public nuisance, and its control is now duly recognized as of grave concern to all. Even if public outcry were not a problem, from the operator's own parochial point of view, dust can adversely affect productivity and the well-being of the operating personnel. Without adequate control, it can also result in costly equipment maintenance, particularly when the dust is micronic in size, and abrasive. The Hierarchy of Control Techniques Given the great fortune of not yet having to deal with gas and odors, in the jargon of pollution control, our problem is confined to having to control "particulates" only. To deal with "particulates", the myriad of dust control techniques can be utterly confusing to those who are not entirely well versed in the methodology. Our analysis of what is available to date results in the following hierarchy of logical preferences: 1. Prevention 2. Removal 3. Suppression 4. Containment 5. Strictly defined, a stull is an inclined or horizontal timber support; a vertically placed timber is defined as a prop. Common usage allows the catchall term "stull" to refer to all such uniaxial mine support, regardless of orientation. Typically a stull is a round wooden column that is wedged in place to provide short-term auxiliary support between sill and back, or between hanging wall and footwall. Stulls may be used exclusively or in con- junction with other support systems such as roof bolts, shotcrete, or cribbing. Stulls are used both as local temporary support in stoping operations and for uniform systematic support installations. Where stoping areas are to be abandoned soon after excavation, stulls may be used to provide temporary support during mining operations. Where controlled caving and subsidence is required, stull supports are designed to fail in a systematic, predictable manner. Wood type is selected on the basis of availability, price, and load carrying characteristics. Coniferous woods are typically used, especially to carry heavy ground loads. Brittle woods are generally avoided because of their tendency to fail suddenly. Gradual yielding failure is preferable to sudden, unexpected failure of the support. Some usage of wood from deciduous trees such as cottonwood and other poplars has been reported in Grants, NM. These stulls reportedly mushroomed as the ground load increased but continued to maintain their structural integrity. Stulls fabricated from structural steel are used in special applications. Adjustable lengths are commercially available in mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic designs. The high cost of mechanical stulls limits their use to mining systems where recovery and reuse is possible. End blocking, also called headboards or footboards, uses wood blocks that are placed between the stull end and the ground they are supporting. The blocks are typically 50.8 to 101.6 mm (2 to 4 in.) thick, 203.2 to 304.8 mm (8 to 12 in.) wide, and 381 to 609.6 mm (15 to 24 in.) long. End blocking serves to distribute the support over wider back area. Compression of the end blocking gives visual indication of wall movement prior to failure of the stull. A common application of the stull is in flat-bedded uranium mining during pillar extraction. Many western US uranium mines use a pillar pattern development to delineate the irregular ore pods. After development of an appropriate sized pillar, the ore pillars are then sequentially mined out, leaving the undercut hanging wall or back to cave. Where thickness of the ore is less than 4.3 m (14 ft), stulls are generally used to provide ground control as the pillar is removed in slices. Experience dictates the density of stull placement. In general, the number and size of stulls should be sufficient to resist ground closure and to provide support for drilling and loading operations adjacent to the pillar. Stulls next to the mining face are often lagged 0.9 to 1.2 m (3 or 4 ft) up from the floor (or sill) to confine the blasted ore to a passage next to the pillar. Mucking is simplified by this confinement. Experience dictates whether back control along a mining face requires removal of stulls to allow con- trolled subsidence of the back or hanging wall. Without caving or closure, abutment pressure can create poor ground conditions near the pillar.

Introduction Minerals exploration is one step in the mining industry's task of providing raw materials to basic industries. The industry's provision of raw materials involves identifying and evaluating resources, converting them to reserves, and intelligent, economic exploitation of these reserves. The mineral process focuses on identification and evaluation. Reserves are ore bodies and ore bodies are, by definition, wasting assets. Therefore, if an adequate provision of raw materials to basic industry is to continue, these wasting assets (ore bodies) must be replaced with new or different reserves as current reserves are depleted. Minerals exploration is a geologic problem and is fundamentally deductive, flowing from the general to the specific. Past exploration methods and philosophy have amply supplied the resources to meet the demands of an industrial society. During the past decade, however, the framework where mineral resources were identified, defined, and evaluated has changed. Mineral explorationists no longer can rely solely on the successful past methods to provide the necessary resources for our complex society. Productive explorationists must effectively and efficiently use tools and procedures that will maximize exploration efforts. Past tools need not be abandoned, but should be critically reviewed and revised in light of current scientific knowledge and technical advances. Future explorationists will view their craft not as a single discipline, but as a thoughtful integration of geophysics, geochemistry, and geostatistics for solving interrelated problems. This integration of the geosciences will lead to successful mineral exploration. Not only will the productive explorationist generate new information, he will master the use of existing data for identifying and evaluating a mineral resource. The mineral exploration process consists of incentives, ideas, finance, area, staff, time, and luck. The exploration process that stems from the interaction of these elements has three stages, each bound by a major decision point. They are selection, reconnaissance, and definition. Subsequent evaluation and exploitation phases are considered more the function of mining engineers than the exploration geologist. Mineral exploration endeavors that have been productive have three attributes fundamental to success: commitment, competence, and persistence. Commitment Commitment is believing that exploring for mineral resources is worth performing. While the mining industry is the focus of this commitment, government and society must also be committed to the concept of mineral reserve identification through exploration activity. Government demonstrates its commitment by providing access to land for exploration and, if it is successful, exploitation can take place. Realistic legislation relating to taxation, land use, reclamation, and environmental constraints is indicative of government commitment to intelligent resource use. The public must come to terms with mineral resource evaluation and extraction. Without some form of commitment from the public, availability of mineral resources vital to basic industry will be largely in the control of a foreign and potentially unstable mining industry. Commitment to a mineral resource identification-evaluation-extraction system must be shared equally by government, society, and the minerals industry. The scope and direction of this commitment varies, with the industry's commitment to explore for mineral resources being the most apparent. Industry commitment is the belief at all levels of exploration (from senior corporate executives to individual field and support staff) that exploration is worth performing, that exploration goals can be met, and that their particular organization is the best and the only group that can successfully accomplish the project. Introduction The US coal mining industry is in the midst of a serious economic crisis. To overcome increased operating costs, operators must take advantage of technological advancements in mining systems and equipment. A relatively new concept available to underground operators is that of extending the cutting depth for continuous mining machines (continuous miners). This system is referred to as deep-cut mining, and may be described as mining cuts to depths greater than the standard 6 m (20 ft). Productivity is increased through the reduction in continuous miner tram time since the machine stays longer in each working face. To successfully implement a deep-cut mining system, three problems must be overcome: Exposing personnel to unsupported roof, methane removal, and controlling respirable dust. Remote control cutting The solution to the unsupported roof problem is remote control. Recent advances in remote operation, especially in radio remote controls, have resulted in what is generally accepted as a safe and reliable tool. By installing remote control on the continuous miner, the operator and helper can now be stationed in a supported area. This allows for improved visibility while cutting coal. With this in mind, the limiting factor now becomes the position of the haulage equipment operator. North River No. 1 uses Joy 21SC shuttle cars and Jeffrey 4110 diesel ramcars. These cars are pulled against the bumper of the continuous miner. Thirteen meters (43 ft) can be cut with the shuttle car and 14 m (45 ft) with the Ramcar before the operator of the car is inby permanent supports. By loading away from the bumper, about 1.5 m (5 ft) can be added, bringing total cut depths up to 14.5 and 15 m (48 and 50 ft), respectively. Methane removal The second problem involves methane removal, and the line curtain-to-face distance. In other words, how to maintain the line curtain to allow sufficient ventilation to remove methane and not expose workers to unsupported roof. The solution, in most cases, is to use a blowing-type ventilation system. Unlike the exhausting system that, to be effective, must be installed within 3 m (10 ft) of the working face, the blowing system can be effective at greater distances from the face. Numerous studies have documented the advantages of a blowing-type ventilation system over an exhausting system. Furthermore, a blowing system can be significantly improved by in¬creasing the velocity of the air delivered without increasing the volume of air. With this greater ventilation efficiency, it is possible to secure ventilation plan approval from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for a greater curtain set-back distance. This eliminates the need for personnel to travel inby permanent supports to extend the face brattice. The distance from the face MSHA will approve, however, is on a mine-by-mine basis. MSHA will evaluate the particular mine's face methane liberation rates, along with the specific proposals regarding face ventilation volumes and velocities. Dust control The third problem is controlling respirable dust. This is actually a result of the solution to the second problem. In the blowing system, while mining on the slab cut, both the continuous miner and haulage units are located on the dusty side of the line curtain (Fig. 1). In the early 1970s, underground operators virtually abandoned this system, in order to comply with the 2 mg/m3 (0.87 gr per cu ft) federal dust standards. In underground operations the evaluation of blasting fume dilution times and the application of recirculation techniques require accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosive used. This paper describes a methodology for obtaining concentrations of detonation products from commercial explosives tested under typical rock confinement and looks into the development of techniques for reducing toxic gases produced by explosives. This paper also analyses the application of techniques for the removal of toxic gas which would enable reduced re-entry times, a reduction in the quantity of fresh air and the use of air recirculation techniques, thereby providing substantial economic benefits to the industry. INTRODUCTION Toxic fumes from blasting operations are among the most common and serious hazards encountered underground. The implication of high concentrations of toxic gases emitted from blasting on the mine ventilation system are very significant and, in many cases, catastrophic results have occurred. Because blasting is a routine practice underground, the mining engineer is always confronted with the problem of controlling the fumes within acceptable levels. Typical control procedures employed underground include preventing or reducing the amount of fumes liberated from blasting through the proper selection of explosives and proper blasting techniques; removing the fumes through local exhaust systems or auxiliary ventilation (dilution ventilation); blasting off-shift, or at restricted times; localizing or isolating the effects of blasting where workings are isolated or sectionalized in the ventilation system; and absorbing some of the components of the fumes using air-water sprays. Dilution is one of the most effective control measures against blasting fumes and is universally applied. However, for precise determination of the dilution times for the fumes to reach safe concentrations, accurate determination of the concentration of toxic fumes produced by the explosives used is required. Research work has been carried out in determining the types and volumes of gases produced from blasting. In the case of ideal detonations, the nature and quantity of the fumes produced can be predicted by thermo-hydrodynamic calculations. However, commercial explosives exhibit non-ideal behaviour which is enhanced by the relatively small diameters of application in underground mines. The confinement offered by the surrounding rock further complicates the situation. It is well recognized that confinement affects performance and consequently fume generation. A detailed data base of fumes generated by commercial explosives at various conditions is introduced and the effect of blasting parameters such as, confinement, shock desensitization and incomplete detonations on toxic fume production is described for a variety of commercial explosives in use today. Thermodynamic predictions on fume production by the explosive compositions tested are also presented and compared with experimental results and their significance in assessing the quantity of fumes produced is discussed. A mathematical model capable of determining dilution ventilation requirements and dilution times to reduce the fume concentrations in the blasting zone to acceptable levels has been developed and it is being incorporated into a network system so that the effects of blasting can be simulated in typical mine ventilation systems. Solutions to the problem of controlling blast fumes within acceptable levels are described. These solutions include the use of control procedures which prevent and reduce the amount of fumes liberated from blasting. The use of low fume explosives, proper blasting techniques, dilution ventilation and filtration can be combined to effectively control fume production and save on costs. The application of these techniques to enable recirculation of underground air with reduced quantities of fresh air requirements is evaluated in a case study.

Many minerals float best with fatty acids in the intermediate pH range. For example, fluorite, a semi soluble salt mineral, exhibits a maximum contact angle and a maximum flotation recovery in the pH range of 6-8 after conditioning in a palmitate solution (fig. 1). The maximum in flotation coincides roughly, as many researchers have observed, with the boundary of bulk precipitation of the fatty acid. According to fig. Z this boundary is in the above case of 5xl0-7 M palmitate approximately at pH 6.3. For assessing the phenomena occurring at the bulk precipitation boundary of fatty acids, the surface tensions of carboxylate solutions have been measured under various conditions. Fig. 3 shows the surface tension development of palmitate and myristate solutions of increasing concentration at pH 12. Also shown are the bulk precipitation edges (BPE) of the respective solid species that is stable under these conditions, that is the potassium acid soap, HKAZ. Both curves display a similar behavior. As the concentration of carboxylat,e increases, the surface tension decreases, until a minimum is reached at which the curves level off. The decrease of surface tension with increasing carboxylate concentration is generally taken to indicate the surface excess of the carboxylate ion. The point where the curve suddenly levels off has not yet been explained. While it is well known that the onset of micellization (CMC) may cause such an inflexion of the surface tension curve, this cannot be the case here because the position of this point depends, as shown in fig. 4 for palmitate, on pH (the CMC is generally independent of pH). We believe that this point indicates the precipitation of a colloidal acid soap (colloidal precipitation edge, CPE) before the bulk precipitation of this species sets in (BPE).

According to statistics compiled by the National Safety Council, US Bureau of Mines, American Medical Association, and other agencies, accidental injuries cause more deaths than all the leading diseases. No one is immune to an accident. Probably the best way to describe an accident is to say that it is an unexpected happening. The automobile driver is not expecting a terrifying crash, the electrician does not expect to be electrocuted, nor is the coal miner expecting the roof to fall on him. All personal injuries will not result in death. There is a multitude of victims who are living proof of what accidents can mean to an individual-victims who are blind, paralytic, missing arms, legs, etc. In most instances the earning power of these individuals is gone, and they are utterly dependent upon family or welfare. For many years there seemed to be an attitude that prevailed in industrial America that accidents were inevitable, and that so many fatalities and injuries should be expected. This, of course, was utter nonsense. Since the birth of such organizations as The National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and. the US Bureau of Mines, much progress has been made in reducing accidents. The enactment of compensation laws greatly contributed to the progress that has been made. Does this mean that all accidents can be prevented? Unfortunately, it does not. Human psychology indicates that men will work unsafely or perform unsafe acts for the following reasons : 1) Lack of knowledge or skill. 2) Conflicting motivations, such as: (a) to be more comfortable, (b) to save time or effort, (c) to be accepted by a group. 3) Physical or mental condition. Nearly everyone desires his own safety, but not all individuals are willing to do what they know to do to insure their own safety.

When tunnel boring machines were first developed, the J. F. Shea Company elected not to use them until some of the bugs were worked out. When we did take the plunge, we learned a great many lessons in tunneling; amongst others, that tunneling with a TBM is more an art than a science. One of the most important factors that contributes to a successful TBM tunnel is the geology. A machine can be designed to handle almost any type of ground; however, if the ground is not uniform, compromises in design must be made to enable the machine to handle the various ground conditions. Even when the geologic formations are well defined, it is still impossible to predict how the formations will react when it is penetrated by a tunnel. This is where the design and performance of a tunnel boring machine runs into trouble. When the reactions are adverse, the contractor is left with three alternatives; park or pull the machine and drive conventional, fight through the formation with no changes, or modify the machine. We have made all three of these choices. The first, on the Tonner Tunnel in Southern California, we encountered an extremely tough sandstone where progress was measured in inches per day. Ultimately, we pulled the machine and drove conventional tunnel. The second, on the Vat Tunnel in Central Utah, another element was added to the geology - water, which we encountered in excess of 1,000 gpm at the heading. It was impossible to adapt the machine to handle this much water, so we have been carrying out a program of grouting ahead of the machine and then driving tunnel with the tunnel boring machine.

During the latter part of the twentieth century exploitation of mineral resources, and gold mining in particular, experienced a resurgence in Europe, with major mining houses and many junior companies involved in exploration and subsequent mine development. Gold projects in particular were actively encouraged and exploration programmes and permitting studies initiated in more than 15 countries, both within the European Union (EU) and the former eastern bloc. During the initial period, governments in many countries provided active support. Following a series of negative environmental mining incidents in the latter part of the century public opinion, often ill-informed, led to political pressure to withdraw governmental assistance. This in turn resulted in the revocation of exploration licenses, and ultimately to the failure to develop a number of potentially world-class mines within the region. Despite these setbacks, gold production in Europe continues, and is probably higher now than 20 years ago. The mining industry is currently coming to terms with both changing attitudes of governments, and the increase in scope and prescriptive nature of legislation. Recent experiences, particularly in Greece and Turkey, exemplify the problems faced by the industry in the region, which are causing major mining companies to reconsider future activities in Europe. The paper presents an overview of European gold mining and its environmental performance in the context of international practice, new legislation, and public perception of mining generally. The rationale of governments in withdrawing support for the industry is questioned, and the feasibility of achieving sustainability where there is no level playing field globally is reviewed. The question is posed to governments, regulators and mining companies alike as to whether there is a future, not only for gold mining, but for the minerals industry in general, within the EU.

The application of computers for control purposes in hydrometallurgical processes is not as well-established as in mineral processing plants. This is not only due to the comparatively new development of large-scale application of hydrometallurgy and the relatively small number of operating plants, but also due to some of the basic dynamic characteristics of hydro- metallurgical processes., Basically there is little difference in the development and application of digital control techniques in hydrometallurgical plants from those techniques widely in use throughout the chemical process industry and in nonslurry applications; particularly for those cases involving liquid streams only, the primary sensing elements are essentially the same. On-stream X-ray fluorescence analysis is a well-established method for determination of metal content in the process streams, and standard equipment is used for the measurement and control of pH, flow, density, temperature, pressure, and other variables. Nevertheless, the high proportion of corrosive slurry streams at elevated temperature and pressure poses a challenge to the instrument engineer concerned with developing long-life, reliable instrumentation. One major difference and potential problem area in developing control systems for hydro- metallurgical processes is related to the very long time constants which are common in the larger plant. In these circumstances, it is important to define the overall control objectives very carefully and be prepared to allow for considerable drift in intermediate variables. In larger projects with many control loops the general advantage of lower costs compared to conventional analog instrumentation can be confidently expected. Also in most cases, the process analysis necessary to design and specify a comprehensive computer control system and the increased operator involvement in implementing digital control systems yield additional benefits due to the increased understanding of the dynamic characteristics of the process.
