"In current tunneling practice, finite element simulations have become an integral element of the planning and design process. These models are most often manually generated using 2D CAD drawings, which is a laborious and time consuming process. In this paper, we propose a BIM based approach, in which the 3D FE-model is automatically generated through a set of compatible geometries of individual components, i.e. the geology, alignment, lining and the TBM. The BIM model also includes all relevant model parameters of the tunneling project that can then be incorporated into subsequent analysis to be performed during the tunnel drive. The setup and the execution of the FE-analysis are performed automatically utilizing all required data from BIM. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed strategies is demonstrated by means of project data from the Wehrhahn-line metro project in Düsseldorf, Germany. Both the design as well as the construction stage is considered. INTRODUCTIONIt is recommend to employ Finite Element (FE) simulations in order to ensure a high degree of safety and quality for any given project (Guglielmetti et al. 2012). As such, FE models form an integral part in the design and planning stages of modern tunneling projects. These models are often time consuming to construct and require data from many different sources. This data is most often not centrally stored and therefore not easily accessible. Additionally, the formats in which project data are stored are typically not compatible with the formats required by an FE program. This is especially true in the case of geometrical data, such as CAD drawings. Although existing design drawings are most often used as the basis for a FE model, a direct import into a FE program is most often not successful as the imported data generates a geometry that does not fulfill the requirements of a FEM model, such as model connectivity. Even if a geometry is successfully imported, other necessary aspects of an FE model, such as boundary conditions and material properties, must be applied manually. These incompatibilities inevitably result in the creation of a new model, which, especially in the case of complex 3D models, is a time consuming process."

The term phosphate beneficiation often conjures up visions of processing technologies that physically separate the phosphate rock from some impurity and do not result in a change in the chemical nature of the phosphate rock. However, when we consider hydrometallurgical processing as a phos¬phate beneficiation technique we have to include all chemical treatments that convert phosphate rock into a more useful product. With most of the phosphate rock mined being used for fertilizer pro¬duction, the best known and most widely employed hydrometallurgical process is wet process phospho¬ric acid manufacture. In general, all phosphate rocks are so insoluble that there is no physical treat¬ment that will allow the phosphate content to be used by vegetation in a timely manner. However, after chemical treatment, 100% of the phosphate is readily available for vegetation nutrition. If there is a chemical beneficiation process that could be considered the standard method of treat¬ing phosphate rock it would have to be the wet pro¬cess for phosphoric acid production. In this process finely ground phosphate is reacted with sulfuric acid to give phosphoric acid and phosphogypsum. The phosphogypsum crystals are removed from the phosphoric acid solution and discarded; the phos¬phoric acid is further processed to give the finished fertilizer product. The primary reason that this pro¬cess was adopted so widely is because the phosphogypsum solid that is formed can be easily separated from the phosphoric acid, thereby removing the calcium portion of the phosphate rock and the sul¬fate portion of the sulfuric acid. Other acids have been used to treat phosphate rock but nitric acid is the only other acid used commercially. Nitric acid gives a mixture of phos¬phoric acid and nitrates that can be further pro¬cessed into N-P fertilizers, but the range of N/P grades that can be produced is limited. Hydrochlo¬ric acid has been used to react with phosphate rock, and it can be used to generate a pure phos¬phoric acid but only after solvent extraction to separate the calcium chloride from the phosphoric acid. And then there is the problem of what to do with the calcium chloride. The acid that has received the most attention as a substitute for sulfuric acid is phosphoric acid. In this process, the phosphoric acid reacts with the phosphate rock to give a mono-calcium phosphate solution. This process does not dissolve all the impurities in the phosphate rock, and these solids can be removed from the solution before sulfuric acid is added to convert the soluble calcium to insoluble phosphogypsum. Despite all the claimed advantages, this process has not found favor. A suc¬cessful application of this process to treat some of the lower grade phosphate rocks being used today would seem to have some distinct advantages. The use of graphite in industrial applications is one of the oldest in the world. Yet, it is one of the fastest-changing technologies today. Graphite was first used centuries ago in developing writing instruments and as a raw material in crucibles used in melting metal. Today, graphite is used in some of our most demanding industries. These include aerospace, electronics and automotive applications. Graphite usage has historically been split between the natural and synthetic forms. Figure 1 shows the breakdown of natural graphites and synthetic graphites used. The usage of natural graphites and synthetic graphites is split fairly evenly, although the applications are quite different. Figure 2 shows the breakdown of applications using natural graphite. The largest application is the refractory industry. This includes refractory brick and plastics, crucibles, shrouds and other refractory parts. This main application uses roughly 50% of all natural graphite. The refractory industry is an important application for natural graphite. However, the refractory markets have been struggling for several years. As demonstrated in Fig. 3 (Semler, 1996), the production of refractories in tons per year has declined by more than 32% during the last 25 years. Refractory prices have actually risen on a dollar per ton basis during that same period as the product mix has shifted to the value-added side. Raw material and production cost increases, inflation and other related costs have kept profitability at low levels for the industry. Furnace linings that once lasted 1,000-2,000 heats now last 8,000-12,000 heats. This means that tonnage requirements have gone down and quality requirements have gone up for graphite suppliers. Therefore, new opportunities and applications must be developed if the graphite industry is to grow. Synthetics are the other major forms of graphite. There are two forms of synthetic material currently used. One is the traditional type. It is made from the turnings of graphite electrode production. The second was developed in the mid-1970s in response to a shortage of conventional synthetic graphite. This occurred by a breakthrough in thermal technology. This new technology purifies, desulfurizes and graphitizes petroleum coke on a continuous basis at temperatures of more than 2,500° C (4,532° F). This product is called desulfurized petroleum coke (Desulco). It now accounts for about half of the synthetic type material used in the United States. Figure 4 shows the breakdown in the use of synthetic types of material by application. The largest requirement is for use as a carbon addition in iron and steel. This is followed by alkaline batteries and friction materials. Current technological opportunities New opportunities for graphite products are now being developed. These new areas are made possible due to the advances in graphite thermal technology. The ability to purify and modify graphite and carbon products is the key to future growth in the graphite industry. New, higher-purity, more consistent graphite products are leading to enhanced performance in current applications. They are also opening the door to new applications.

Webster's dictionary nearly equates portland cement with its current primary definition of cement. Although such equation may be a triumph of common usage, the confusion between the terms cement and concrete unfortunately is very widespread. Full definition of cement properly would extend to many substances, but for purposes of this chapter cement is restricted to varieties of portland cement including portland-pozzolan cement. Among the usually recited historical notes concerning cement is that it was developed by the Romans. Their use of cement in the great structures of Rome, and even in the far comers of their Empire, such as Hadrian's Wall in the north of England, testifies to the antiquity of a major cement industry. From English sources we know of John Smeaton's carefully proportioned hydraulic cement mixed in 1756 and of Joseph Aspdin's patented cement to which, in 1824, he gave the name portland cement. (He claimed that his cement mortar looked like the famous dimension limestone quarried from the Isle of Portland on England's south coast.) The year 1971 marked the centennial of portland cement manufacture in the United States. A fair historical account of the many real contributors to the cement industry since 1756 unfortunately would be too extensive for this chapter. Development of rotary kiln practice and burning at higher temperatures clearly was the major move into today's technology. Cement manufacture is the processing of selected and prepared mineral raw materials to produce the synthetic, mineral mixture (clinker) that can be ground to a powder having the specified chemical composition and physical properties of cement. Cement making incorporates a number of distinct steps, but it is characterized by the key pyroprocessing (or burning) step, which brings about the necessary changes in the raw materials. This pyroprocessing is a chemical process. Conversion of large volumes of mineral raw materials into specification-controlled cement at relatively low cost is the objective. Statistics on the cement industry are of uneven quality. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is the principal collector of available data. These statistics can be only as good as the quality of information supplied by the reporting companies. The data perhaps most often questioned relates to productive capacity of the industry. The questions submitted by USBM are valid, nevertheless, and the information gained from them, as good as is available, is what is generally used. The Portland Cement Association also is a source of much quality information. In analyzing cement industry production rates, it is well to keep in mind that measurement of raw materials requires the reader to recognize that approximately 1.6 t of dry raw materials are required to make 1 t of clinker. This number can vary depending on the amount of kiln dust wasted. Also that to produce 1 t of portland cement required .94 to .96 t of clinker, the remainder being gypsum or anhydrite. A ton of masonry cement or pozzolanic cement re- quires considerably less clinker.

The Alligator Ridge mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 113 km (70 miles) northwest of Ely, NV. The deposit was discovered in 1976 by a lone prospector working under a grubstake contract for Amselco Minerals Inc. Evaluation of mine potential proceeded quickly. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility and mine design studies by the end of 1978. Mine construction began in early 1980. By September of that year, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold was poured a few months later. Alligator Ridge is designed to produce 1.9 t (60,000 oz) of gold each year. The projected mine life, based on proven reserves, is to mid-1988. However, Amselco is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. Amselco, a subsidiary of the British Petroleum Co., is based in Denver, CO. The company is mine operator and jointly owns the project with Nerco Minerals Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light. Alligator Ridge is Amselco's first US mining operation. Geology Alligator Ridge, so named because it appears in outline to be an alligator at rest, contains disseminated micron gold embedded in iron-streaked siltstones. Although definitive conclusions have not been drawn on age and origin, the gold ore bodies are probably young by geological standards. They were formed in a recent volcanic period still evidenced in parts of Nevada by geysers and hot springs. As these superheated solutions rose through the permeable siltstones, they deposited minerals in the rock and formed the present gold ore bodies. During 1977, an extensive soil geochemical sampling program with additional geologic mapping and outcrop sampling were conducted. The results generated several drill targets. Initial drilling was performed in November and December 1977, and ore grade mineralization was encountered in the first drill hole. The Alligator Ridge mine is unusual in relation to other and more recent western US mineral discoveries in that it occupies an area that had no previous mining history. The ore deposits are hosted in upper Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that consist predominantly of a thick carbonate sequence. The main ore host is the Devonian-Mississippian Pilot shale, which occurs locally as a sequence of thin bedded calcareous, carbonaceous siltstones and claystones. The maximum observed thickness of the Pilot section in the mine area is about 140 m (460 ft). Rocks in the Alligator Ridge area have been folded into a series of low amplitude anticlines and synclines that strike north-south and plunge to the south at about 20°, with limbs that dip nearly 20°. The folds have been truncated and deformed by later high-angle faults that generally strike northwest. Although multiple stages of movement are evident on the fault systems, the youngest period of activity is along the major northeast trend. The predominant structural pattern in the area is of the basin- and range-type high angle normal faults. Alligator Ridge is actually a horst block between two basin and range faults. Vantage Ore Deposits There are three principal ore deposits within the Vantage Basin and several smaller satellite mineralized areas. The three Vantage deposits are encompassed in a mineralized zone that covers an area 915 m (3,000 ft) long and 305 m (1,000 ft) wide. All mineralized zones have been outlined by more than 600 rotary drill holes, with an average depth of 150 m (500 ft). Mineralization occurs in both carbonaceous and oxidized rocks. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is not amenable to current heap leaching practice. Therefore, only oxidized ores are now treated. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is segregated and stockpiled as it is encountered during mining. The three ore bodies occur along a north-northeast strike, with mineralization becoming progressively deeper from north to south. The ore block dimen-

There are a great number of asbestos deposits in the USSR, and some are quite large. The main deposits of chrysotile asbestos are shown in Fig. 1. The Bazhenovo deposit, which is located in the Sverdlovsk region, is the largest and has been mined since 1889. Systematic studies of asbestos deposits were begun from the very be- ginning of Soviet government and are most often connected with the names K.E. Tarasov, P.M. Tatarinov, B.J. Merenkov, N.D. Sobolev, F.V. Syromjatnikov, V.N. Lodochnikov, V.P. Petrov, V.P. Eremeev, L.A. Sokolova, V.R. Artemov, and V.F. Dybkov. Investigations by these people and others helped the USSR be one of the most important producers of asbestos in the world. In this chapter, the main asbestos deposits of the USSR are explained in a general outline from the point of view of their genesis, common features, and differences that must be taken into account for forecasting, exploration, and the mining of asbestos. All chrysotile asbestos deposits of the USSR were formed from magnesium rock as a result of comparatively low grade temperature, hydrothermal alteration, and free crystallization of fibrous chrysotile in open cavities that served as catalysts. Chrysotile, a widely distributed rock-forming mineral, is not in general an important mineral for industry as it is a long fibrous and main vein variety. However, it must serve for geologists as an important prospecting criteria. And, the geologist should search for the mineral not only in places of possible chrysotile generation, but in places where asbestos may be crystallized in its long fibers. The Soviet geologists distinguish chrysotile asbestos deposits in two groups: (1) ultrabasic rocks and (2) sedimentary dolomite terranes, taking into account how the maternal rock was affected by hydrothermal solutions. The largest deposits are related to ultrabasite. In dolomite, the largest deposits are small and their asbestos contains almost no iron, which makes it a better filler for insulating plastics. There are a few types of asbestos deposits within the limits of the ultrabasic group, the largest being a Bazhenovo type to which the deposits of the Urals are attributed. This Bazhenovo asbestos is characterized by the most complete zonality of disposition for various kinds of asbestization. These types of deposits are, for the most part, the only ones presently working in the USSR. The Bazhenovo deposit is connected to the gabbro-peridotite intrusive belt that is about 180 km long and is broken into a number of fault blocks as shown in Fig. 2. Granitoid veins of intruded rocks are found along the deepest faults, and were sources of hydrothermal solutions that affected the maternal rock. The nearest granitoid vein, ultrabasite, is substituted by listwanite that consists of quartz, talc, carbonate, and some other essentially talcous rock. The next zone of hydrothermal alteration is composed of serpentine. The boundry between serpentinite and unaltered ultrabasite is as irregular, diffuse, and rough as the boundaries between all other zones. Nearer the vein of granitic rock, ultrabasite is entirely serpentinized into massif serpentinization that penetrates through cracks and fissures. There is an unaltered ultrabasite space between fissures, and the biggest block is preserved unaltered in the central part of the massif. The Soviet geologists call this ultrabasic sopka. Preservation of the unchanged blocks is of great importance for deposit formation as volume changes are impossible during the process of asbestization and serpentinization. It may be confidently said that asbestization in Bazhenovo type deposits is possible only when alteration of ultrabasite has not completely occurred. "As a new method to support gate roadways, rock bolting has been widely used in the big coal enterprises for its superiority. The disturbed stress field of surrounding rock and anchor pre-stress field were divided into 3 areas in consideration of s1, s3. The surrounding rock failure form and characteristic were analyzed in combination with parameter f, the failure mechanism was explained using the slip line theory, furthermore, the rock bolting mechanism and its arrangement were studied. After roadway excavation, the tensile stress area appeared at the surface of the surrounding rock. The failure type changes from shallow tension-shear form into deep compression-shear form and the failure shape is an “incense burner”, surrounding by high risk failure area in butterfly shape. The maximum principle stress in roof appears discontinuous distribution because of layers separation. The failure type of surrounding rock is intensity-stress environment-weak plane control model. The internal reason of roadway macroscopic failure is the displacement between the surface plastic area and the deep elastic region along the tangential direction of slip line. In condition of rock bolt support, there is one-way tensile stress area in small range at the surface of surrounding rock, inside is the bidirectional compressive zone in uniform distribution form, stress environment is improved by the superposition of anchor pre-stress and disturbed stress field, anchor rock bolt arrangement and pre-tightening force distribution is decided according to the distribution of f parameter. Finally, supporting method and parameter reasonability was proved by the roadway deformation monitoring, damage depth drilling peep test in the 8101 transportation roadway in a mine.Introduction The stability of roadway support is very important to the safety and sustainable development of coal mine. In recent years, the focus of China's coal mining industry began to move to West China, the thick-extra thick coal seam is developed in the West. The latest technology and equipment have been put in to service, the occurrence condition of thick coal seam and the increasing of productivity lead to the cross section of the roadway increasing continually, hence, it is more difficult to control the surrounding rock. At present, the most common way to support the roadway is rock bolt (cable) support (Wang 2007); Scholars have been deeply studied on the mechanism of rock bolt. It is reported (Wang et al 2012, Gao 2007, Zhang and Yuan 2006) that the influence of rock bolt on physical and mechanical parameters of coal and rock mass in the anchorage zone, It is believed that the rock bolt can improve the peak strength of surrounding rock, especially the post peak strength, and the failure mode of rock mass under the rock bolt support is analyzed. It is reported (Wang et al 2014, Xiao et al 2013, Li et al 2007, Yan et al 2012), according to different geological conditions, the failure mechanism of surrounding rock and supporting technology of the whole coal roadway were studied. Focus on the failure mechanism of roadway surrounding rock, different forms of high strength support methods were proposed, which achieved good results. It is reported (Wang et al 2012a, Zhang et al 2011, Wang et al 2012b, Kang et al 2010, Zhang et al 2010, Kang et al 2007) that the supporting mechanism of pre-stressed anchor was analyzed from the point of the distribution of the maximum principal stress in the pre-stressed anchor field, and the influence of the rock bolt support parameters and surrounding rock characteristics on the supporting effects were studied. Based on the latest research results, this paper analyzed the failure mechanism of surrounding rock of coal roadway, proposed the high strength anchor net cable combined supporting technology based on the feature of stress zoning distribution of surrounding rock, to provide reference for the coal roadway rock bolt (cable) support technology."

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage stope mining can be employed in steeply dipping veins where both the wall and the vein material are sufficiently strong to stand with only minimal ground support. Shrinkage stope mining takes advantage of the swell in volume produced in breaking in-place ore. This expanded volume of ore is allowed to occupy part of the mined-out vein, and in so doing provides ground sup¬port and a working surface for the miners. Only enough of the ore is drawn after each stoping cut to allow work¬ing room. Not until the entire mining block has been broken is the full amount of broken ore drawn from the stope. DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES FOR SHRINKAGE STOPING The vein is developed into stoping blocks, each of which is 76 to 91 m (250 to 300 ft) in length and 61 m (200 ft) between levels. Level development, described later, is either on the vein or parallel to it with crosscuts periodically driven over to the vein. There are usually two exits from each stope. The first entry is a raise at one end driven either conventionally by raise climber, or by a raised borehole. Present practice is that this raise, put in from level to level, is either a 2.1- x 2.1-m (7- x 7-ft) Alimak raise or a 1.2- to 1.8-m (4- to 6-ft) diam borehole. Either raise system will require pro¬visions for an ore chute carried with the stope to the haulage level or the scram drift. At 9- to 12-m (30- to 40-ft) vertical intervals, dogholes are developed from the raise so that when stoping breaks back into these dogholes, timber or steel sets and necessary service facilities can be installed. The second entry to the stope may be either a similar raise at the stope endline, or more economically, a cribbed raise carried with the stope. As previously stated, development of the ore block is achieved by either drifting on the vein or by paralleling the vein with a footwall lateral and then crosscutting over to the vein at specified intervals. In the following discussion, three basic cases are illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. In Fig. 1, development is in the footwall by a 3- x 3-m (10- x 10-ft) trackless lateral. A heading is also driven on the ore and taken either full width or driven a standard size and slabbed to the vein width. Approxi¬mately 9-m (30-ft) long crosscuts on 7.6-m (25-ft) cen¬ters are driven from the lateral to the vein. For ease in muck handling they are usually put in on a slant rather than at right angles. A single orepass, located off the lateral and in the center of one stope block, can serve not only that stope, but also one on either side, up to a tramming distance of not more than 137 m (450 ft). Raises are put at the stope endlines on 91-m (300-ft) centers. The back of the vein is shot down and just enough broken material is drawn off to permit access for men to work off the broken ore. Development in Fig. 2 progresses by driving a 3- x 3-m (10- x 10-ft) trackless heading on the footwall side of the vein. The ore block is delineated by raises on 91-m (300-ft) centers. Crosscuts are again driven on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers over to the vein. Approximately four rounds are then taken up to the vein and each round is successively belled out so that all the crosscuts (pockets, in this case) connect. The basic theme of this symposium and panel Is Rotation Pads: Are They Optimized? There Is a. reason for phrasing the title In the form of a question. There Is not only the technical competency which we must address; there Is the operating philosophy that must be evaluated on the part of both the customer and the supplier. Customers desire reagents which are trouble-free and capable of providing that extra amount of selectivity or recovery. When they receive ft, after the supplier has provided several years of Internal research, one of the first concerns/complaints Is the price of the product. This has a tendency to rapidly reduce a supplier's support level In the future. Suppliers are equally guilty from another perspective. When they approach a customer to Introduce a product, they often attempt to market by offering only a price Incentive. They then wonder why a customer doesn't respond Immediately to the incentive. They are often oblivious to the fact that the reagent cost is such a minor aspect of the operating budget, and the customer has many more pressing problems on a day-to-day basis In comparison to the reagent cost. We need to establish the understanding that reagent cost Is an Inconsequential cost of operation, and yet has such a disproportionately high Impact on the success of the entire operation. This understanding Is required by both the customer and the supplier. We say to each other,' why are we discussing this since this has been obvious for some time?' The reason is relatively simple in that we talk about it, acknowledge it, and yet we do not adhere to it. The supplier provides a product along with test data containing statistics, analysis, recovery, grade and cost calculations while most of the time ignoring the operating technique which must be applicable In the plant In order to optimize the product. He expects the reagent to be substituted In the plant for the existing reagent and ft works or does not work after trying several variables. The operating management Is equally guilty, In order to best explain this to both the customer and the supplier, ft becomes necessary to review the basic purpose of the major reagents utilized In flotation. A collector is basically to Impact selective, maximum water repellency on the surface of a particular mineral, The frother has the purpose of providing a chemically stabilized membrane on the surface of the bubble at the air-water interphase. This, then, provides a host environment for the attachment of the collector-coated mineral to a bubble. The depressant functions In the reverse of the collector and must demonstrate the same or greater degree of selectivity than expected of a collector. The key area which has been Ignored Is the rate by which these reactions occur and Interrelate. This has a very specific effect on the operating technique and the compatibility of the chemistry, equipment, and the operator himself. Researchers, suppliers, and customers provide reams of data to demonstrate how their products or design produce, for example, higher kinetics, more selectivity, or more recovery. The Information is often true. After all, we are all learned men and laboratory and actual plant data do not lie. However, we must remember the theme of this symposium and panel: Flotation Plants: Are They Optimized? and Optimizing of Flotation Reagents? The direct, honest comment to the two titles is very simple. OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT The plants, equipment, and reagents had better not be optimized or else we are in trouble. The Issue of this panel discussion is to approach this subject from a slightly different or perhaps mainly Ignored aspects of optimizing reagents in flotation. When we have reagents which provide higher kinetics, more selectivity, and better recovery, how do we use them? Since each reagent has a different physical characteristics of froth, rate of recovery, volume effect on the compatibility of equipment, and many more aspects too numerous to mention, the question which has been severely Ignored Is, 'What degree of study and cooperation by both the supplier and the operating management has been conducted In order to prepare the operator for maximizing the performance of a reagent In relation to the rest of the system?" Prior to testing a new reagent, how much time Is spent to bring the actual operator(s) Into the program to make them feel part of the program? How much time is spent explaining to the operator on the float floor how to possibly take advantage of a reagent with faster kinetics or one which Is Inherently more selective? What

[Introductory Remarks] Thermoluminescence (TL) detectors are widely used for the dosimetry of X- and[ y]-rays. Also filter devices for radon daughter monitoring have been developed in which the a activity on the filter was measured with TL-detectors (Breslin et al., 1977). For this purpose normal LiF-tablets with a thickness of 0.4 - 1 mm were used. However the lower detection limit of such TLmonitors for radon daughters is relative high, especially in areas with a high [y]-background, due to the low [a /-y]-sensitivity ratio of such thick LiF-detectors. This [a/y]-sensitivity ratio can be increased if TL-detectors are used whose thickness is comparable with the range of [a]-particles. On the basis of this consideration we have developed a simple light weighted and sensitive TL-monitor for the measurement of the cumulative radon daughter exposure in air. [Description of the "Monitor] The monitor consists of two parts: The sampling pump with the accumulator, and the sampling probe which contains the air filter and TL-detector system. Both parts are connected with a plastic tube. For operation in mines a light weight, portable air sampler with a built-in accumulator (DuPont model 125 and 200, 400 g) is used which enables an adjustable, constant flow rate in the range of 7.5 -12 1/h. These air samplers allow a sampling period of 10 hours before recharging is necessary. For radon daughter measurements in houses this pump is replaced by a larger, netoperated pump with a flow rate of 180 1/h. Figure 1 shows a schematic cross section through the sampling probe whose weight is 40 g. The radon daughters are collected on a hydrophob membrane filter (Sartorius) with an effective filter diameter of 11 mm and a pore diameter of 3 µm; its collection efficiency for radon daughters is [>] 95%. Above the filter the detector system is mounted. It consists of two thin Tm-activated CaSO4-TL films of 8 mm diameter on a Al-carrier foil manufactured by Matsushita Inc., Japan. The thickness of the TL-film is 6 mg/cm2, which is comparable with the range of a rays. The first detector is faced in 3.5 mm distance above the filter; in addition to the ambient y background this detector is exposed to the [a] and ß radiation from the radon daughters on the filter. Between the first and the second TL-detector is an Al-absorber of 0.5 mm thickness which shields this detector against the [a] radiation and partly also to the ß radiation from the filter. Both detectors have the same [y] shielding. After air sampling both TL-detectors are read-out with a commercial, hot-air reader (Matsushita Inc. / Japan, Model 505 A). The glow-curves are identical for [a and y] rays (Regulla et al., 1980). The integral TLsignal from both detectors is displayed in mR-units (or mR-equivalent). The difference between the response of the unshielded TL-detector above the filter and the shielded TL-detector is proportional to the time-integral of the filter activity, integrated over the sampling period. Calibration and Intercomparison Measurements] The linearity of the a response was checked with a 241Am-source for an [a] fluence on the detector surface of 5400 [a's/cm2•s] in the range of 102 -105 mR-equivalent. Within the experimental error of 15% the response function is linear. The TLD-monitor was calibrated for radon daughters in air by comparison with a calibrated integrating, monitor (WLM-meter) equipped with a Si-surface barrier detector and a direct electronic read-out; this instrument was developed by us for area monitoring some years ago (Haider et al., 1976). The results of simultaneous measurements with the TL-monitor and the electronic WLM-meter in mine areas and in indoor air of houses are shown in figure 2. On the abscissa the mean potential [a] energy concentration (in WL) during the sampling period is given which was derived from the measurements with the electronic WLM-meter. On the ordinate the corresponding response of the TLDmonitor to radon daughters (difference between both TL-detectors) is displayed, expressed in terms of mRequivalent per liter sampled air. It follows from this comparison a linear relationship over the whole range of 0.005 - 5 WL with a standard deviation of 10%. The resulting calibration factor for the TLD-monitor is 18± 2 mRequiv per WL • 1.

INTRODUCTION In most cases, the design of an underground mine is based upon the premise that the ground either will cave or will be stable. This chapter concerns the design of a mine in ground that will cave readily or with some as¬sistance, such as by long-hole drilling and blasting. Some of the more widely used caving systems of mining are panel caving, block caving, sublevel caving, and large pillar recovery. Some of the less widely used systems are glory-hole, top slicing, and induction caving. Al¬though the common practice of pillar robbing is not usually considered to be a caving system, this subject will be treated as a part of this chapter. BASICS OF CAVING Caving systems are most successful in ground that will cave in sizes that will flow through openings and grizzlies, and will easily load in cars or on belts for haul¬age. The ground most likely to cave well is highly frac¬tured and contains breaks, flaws, or other discontinui¬ties that form planes of weakness. Also, caving action can be greatly enhanced if the host rock itself is low in compressive, shear, and tensile strength. Ideally, a cav¬ing system of mining is best employed when the criteria for caving is a feature of the ore body and the develop¬ment drifts, haulageways, and drawpoints can be mined in a highly competent rock beneath the mineralized zone. However, the development is often in the same, or similar, fractured rock and the openings require sub¬stantial artificial support to assure stability. Several clues can be assembled to identify potential caving ground; however, for borderline cases, no sure method has been devised to date. The diamond-drill cores taken for exploration can provide an excellent clue provided drilling is performed carefully by experienced drillers. For example, if the ground is cored in such a manner that the breaks in the core are caused more by failure of the rock than by whipping core barrels, plugged drill bits, or other drilling causes, and the intact core lengths are consistently long [say, 0.6 to 3 m (2 to 10 ft) of unbroken core], there is little reason to believe the ground will cave without considerable as¬sistance. This is especially true for rocks with compres¬sive strengths above 34.5 MPa (5000 psi) and tensile strengths above 2.1 MPa (300 psi). On the other hand, if core recovery is low (below 80%) and the recovered ore is broken in small pieces and the breaks are along obvious weaknesses in the rock, the chances are excel¬lent that the ground will cave. This is true even when the rock between the defects has high compressive and tensile strength. Another clue has already been mentioned, that is, the measurement of the physical properties of the rock and the natural planes of weakness or defects in the rock. The planes of weakness in the rock can often be detected from outcrops, cores, or other exposures of the rock under consideration. Some rock types are known to be strong and will sustain large, unsupported open¬ings and would be difficult to cave intentionally. Yet the same rock type can also contain unbonded or weak planes of weakness or fractures, and in these locations the rock would undoubtedly cave with little assistance. Therefore, although the inherent strength of the rock is a factor in caving, the natural defects in the rock are more often the deciding factor. DESIGN CONCEPTS For the most part, the design of openings for caving ground is a problem of the interaction of openings over a relatively large area of the mine. To illustrate, Fig. 1 is a simplified section of a series of openings along the grizzly level or draw level of a block caving or panel caving development, and above this opening is a simpli¬fied section of a room-and-pillar arrangement on the undercut level. At this stage of the development, the stresses around the openings on the grizzly level are only moderately influenced by the openings on the undercut level and vice versa. Therefore, the stresses around the openings are approximated by the stresses around single or multiple openings in rock, the values of which are de¬scribed in the literature (Obert, Duvall, and Merrill, 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). Once the pillars on the undercut level are blasted (Fig. 2), the situation changes abruptly. The undercut opening (prior to caving) now can be approximated as an ovaloidal opening above the grizzly drifts and this opening tends to shield the vertical stress field. As the caved stage is drawn the stope approximates a much larger rectangular or square opening filled with rock, and if the rock is not sustaining a major portion of the stress field, this opening can be considered (for en¬gineering purposes) to be empty and the stresses that interact between the larger and the smaller openings take on a totally new perspective (see Fig. 3). Next, let the material cave to the surface, and let the caving ma¬terial sustain some stress, but much less than if the ma¬terial were intact. This condition is similar to a soft inclusion in a rigid body and has been treated in the literature (for example, Donnell, 1941). Field criteria are needed to help the prospector recognize a potentially expansible shale, clay, or slate. Certain criteria have proven useful in California even though the physical-chemical mechanisms of expansion are not thoroughly understood. Three conditions must be satisfied before expansion can take place, The raw material must partially fuse at a low temperature (1800-2000°F.), Concurrently a gas must form. The raw material must be sufficiently impermeable to trap the gas within the particle. Low temperature melting, which is controlled by bulk chemical composition, is difficult to assess in the field but most common shale, clay, and slate is suitable in this respect, The presence of organic carbon, the most common source of an expanding gas, is indicated by dark color of the rock, A large proportion of clay-sized particles promotes impermeability; fine grain-size is indicated by conchoidal fracture, The shape of the expanded particle is commonly indicated by the texture of the raw material. Rocks with well-developed slatey cleavage produce accordion-shaped particles; massive rocks tend to form rounded particles. Undesirable materials commonly present with expansible shale include: weathered shale; sandstone and other coarse-grained sediments; and limestone, Weathering, which is indicated by color, reduces or eliminates expansion; therefore, surface samples seldom are representative of the shale found at depth. Sandstone does not expand and will increase the average weight of the finished product, Limestone or particles of carbonate minerals can be actively harmful because they are converted to free lime (CaO) during the firing process, If free lime is present in concrete, hydration will cause expansion of the lime particles which result in surficial ?popouts.?

Endako Mines' molybdenum operation is located near the geographic center of the province of British Columbia, Canada. The property is six miles south of the Northern Transprovincial Highway and the northern main line of the Canadian National Railway. The area is broken by high hills covered with dense stands of spruce and pine with vast areas of the valley floors covered with aspen and poplar. The climate is moderate with precipitation averaging 22 inches per year. Approximately four feet of snow accumulates in the winter, and temperatures range from 900 F. in summer to -40° F. in winter. The orebody, a lowgrade porphyry type deposit, occurs in a widespread granitic intrusive which has been locally weakened at the intersection of two regional faults. In this vicinity the quartz monzonite has been further shattered to permit the entry of mineralizing solutions and local dykes. Two types of mineralization occur within the orebody. The most prom¬inent is the six inch to four foot wide continuous quartz veins with characteristic ribbons of molybdenite and frequently finely-divided grains of molybdenite within the quartz. The second type occurs as fine fractures filled with quartz molybdenite in the form of a stockwork halo radiating out from 20 to 200 feet from the quartz veins. Minor hematite, magnetite and chalcopyrite are also present. Mineralization is roughly proportional to the extent of kaolinization in the quartz monzonite, kaolinization being one of three distinct forms of hydrothermal alteration. Pyrite is commonly associated with molybdenum mineralization within the orebody and a pyrite halo is recognized on the south side of the orebody.

INTRODUCTION The phrase "subsidence control planning" can refer to the use of specific mining methods and-specialized techniques to control subsidence events or it can refer to planning for subsidence by predicting its magnitude and timing and further planning mitigation strategies. In the first case the objective is actually subsidence prevention while in the second it is a design procedure that seeks to maximize the use of both surface and subsurface resources. Neither technology is well developed at this point. The purpose of this presentation is to briefly outline the Department of Energy's Subsidence Program. This program is, in general, bases on the premise that subsidence control technology, by any definition, can be accomplished only through a thorough and rigorous understanding of subsidence phenomena. This understanding must come from many well planned and executed studies of stress redistribution and strata deformation as they occur during mining activities. There is presently considerable incentive to improve our subsidence engineering capabilities due to the desire for increased coal utilization with acceptable environmental impact. Considerable research in this area is being sponsored by federal and state governmental agencies, universities, and the coal industry. Federal sponsorship has been borne by the Department of Energy, the Bureau of Mines, the Office of Surface Mining and the U.S. Geological Survey for the most part. These agencies have carried out basic research in their laboratories and have contracted with other organizations for additional work. At this time most of the available resources are directed toward contract research, especially in DOE. It is the DOE research plan which will be addressed here.

Paste backfill is a pumpable, flowable, non-Newtonian fluid consisting generally of mine tailings and cement. Paste is prepared from dilute slurries of tailings. This is done by dewatering the slurries with conventional thickening or filtering. Backfill with a paste consistency is prepared by mixing dewatered tailings with cement and water to obtain the desired consistency of medium slump concrete. The paste is pumped with concrete pumps over relatively long (1 km or 0.6 mile) horizontal distances. More commonly, though, it flows by gravity down a mine shaft and then horizontally to the void being filled. Alternatively, cement can be added near the end of the pipeline. A certain proportion of fine particles <20 µm (<625 mesh) must be present in pastes but particles of aggregate can be added without significantly affecting the flow characteristics. Detailed testwork is necessary to design a system to prepare and place paste backfill. Testwork must determine dewatering characteristics, strength of mixes and friction in pipelines. Plants must be well engineered and controlled with PLCs because high quality control is necessary to prevent plugged pipelines and excessive pressures. Relatively small amounts of cement (3% to 5%) produce stiff backfill material 1.5 to 3.5 MPa (217 to 507 psi). The advantages of paste backfill in a mining operation include reduced mine dewatering, labor and materials savings, reduced tailings impoundment requirements, good support properties and reduced spills underground. In certain cases where more than 30% of the weight of the ore is sold as a product, the entire tailings stream can be placed underground. Paste technology can he used for surface or underground placement of tailings.

Information for mine planning requires to be close spaced, if compared to the grid used for exploration and resource assessment. The additional samples collected during quasi-mining are frequently located in the same pattern of the original diamond drill holes net but closer spaced. This procedure is not the best in mathematical sense for selecting a location. The impact of an additional information to reduce the uncertainty about the parameter been modelled is not the same everywhere within the deposit. Some locations are more sensitive in reducing the local and global uncertainty than others. This study introduces a methodology to select additional sample locations based on stochastic simulation. The procedure takes into account data variability and their spatial location. Multiple equally probable models representing a geological attribute are generated via geostatistical simulation. These models share basically the same histogram and the same variogram obtained from the original dataset. At each block belonging to the model a value is obtained from the n simulations and their combination allows one to access local variability. Variability is measured using an uncertainty index proposed. This index was used to map zones of high variability. A value extracted from a given simulation is added to the original dataset from a zone identified as erratic in the previous maps. The process of adding samples and simulation is repeated and the benefit of the additional sample is evaluated. The contribution of an extra sample was evaluated locally, globally and in terms of variation in total measured resources. The procedure showed to be robust and theoretically sound, mapping zones where the additional information is most beneficial. A case study using coal seam thickness illustrates the method.

1 - INTRODUCTION The Canadian Shield is well known as being among the older exposed areas of the earth&apos;s surface. Except for local zones, its extent from the Arctic to central North America is characterized by strong and durable crystalline rocks. It is generally regarded as highly competent for tunnelling and underground excavation and, as a result, many openings are excavated in it with minimal temporary support. If hydraulic efficiency is not a factor, tunnels do not usually require continuous concrete linings. A high percentage of the crystalline rocks of the Shield are of metamorphic origin and as such one of the dominant characteristics is their foliation. Zones of sheared or faulted rock are common in the Canadian Shield, particularly in association with foliation. These zones may be created during the late stages of the metamorphic process, leaving shear zones as an integral feature of foliated rock. As foliation is a preferred direction of weakness, deformation and rupture during subsequent tectonism may also create parallel shear zones. These "foliation shear zones", as described by Deere (1973), are an adverse feature of the otherwise durable rocks of the Canadian Shield. The zones may range from faults of major proportions to seams only a fraction of an inch thick. If fault gouge or alteration products exist in the zone the strength of the rock mass may be great1y reduced. As foliation is usually continuous, large unstable wedges of rock may be created if the opening is subparallel to the foliation. The effect on the construction of underground openings in terms of excavations, support and scheduling can be significant.

The new Tren Urbano heavy rail transit project in San Juan, Puerto Rico has one very significant part, the Río Piedras Contract, being constructed underground. This paper will give an overview of the tunneling work that started construction in1997. Design-Build procurement for tunneling is addressed. The new and modern transit system in San Juan will be 17.2 km (10.7 mi)long and have 16 stations in its first segment of construction, which is due to open in 2001. The line connects the city center district of Santurce to the outlying suburban municipality of Bayamón. All construction is being done under design-build contracts as a demonstration project funded by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The Río Piedras Contract is completely underground and involves practically all types of construction in soft ground. One station is built as cut-and-cover at the University of Puerto Rico. One portion has twin tunnels to be driven with an Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) and lined with one-pass precast concrete segments. Another has four short tunnel drives at a turnout that will be constructed with an initial support of shotcrete and lattice girders (i.e., the New Austrian Tunneling Method of construction). The most complex construction is the Río Piedras Station, which is being built as a stacked drift with a total of 15 individual tunnel drifts. After being sequentially excavated and concreted, they will form the arch of the 19 m (62 ft.) wide by 16 m (53 ft.) high cavern station. This structure is excavated in soil with less than 5 m (16 ft.) of cover to overlying historic buildings.

The brines from the sub-surface of the Laguna del Rey dry lake are pumped to Química del Rey, S. A. plant, where they are cooled in adiabatic crystallizers precipitating sodium sulphate decahydrate. This salt is dehydrated in multiple effect evaporators and dried in rotary kilns producing high purity anhydrous sodium sulphate. The spent brines from the sodium sulphate operation are concentrated in solar ponds, precipitating astrakanite and leaving a brine with a higher concentration of magnesium ions. This brine is treated with calcium chloride solution to eliminate the remainder of sulphates, leaving a solution of magnesium chloride ready for the manufacture of refractory grade magnesium oxide or periclase. The magnesium chloride is reacted with dolime to produce magnesium hidroxide which is washed, filtered, and calcined to produce soft burned magnesium oxide, which is briquetted and dead burned to produce the periclase.

Zinc concentrates received in La Oroya zinc refinery are marmatitic in nature, contain about 11% iron and traces of other metal values, Figure 1 shows the zinc circuit. The calcine from the roasted concentrates is leached in spent zinc electrolyte. Major part of the impurities is iron which has been oxidized to its trivalent form, This is the origin of the zinc leach residue for which the ZILERET process was developed and so named. The impure liquor from the leach is sent for purification and thence to electrolysis- zinc deposits on aluminum cathodes from which: it is stripped, melted and cast into slabs Typical assays of zinc calcine and leach residue are given in Table 1. Metal values contained in the leach residue, without counting any value of iron, amount to roughly $130 per short ton.
