The extraction of gold from chloride solutions with activated carbon is examined. It is shown that the uptake of gold by activated carbon from chloride solution follows a mechanism whereby gold is reduced to the metallic state. Metallic gold appears as deposits both on the carbon surface and in pore space within the carbon particle. The deposition rate is dependant on the carbon particle size and pH. At low initial gold concentrations, the initial rate is insensitive to gold concentration. Sodium hypochlorite exhibits an adverse effect on the reduction reaction. The overall loading and initial rate of reduction are both decreased in the presence of NaC10. The effect of iodide on the loading of gold was also examined in an attempt to overcome the superficial deposition of gold on carbon.

In a recent speech in Pittsburgh, Dr. George Keyworth, the President's Science Advisor, made a statement which I believe deserves our very careful consideration. Dr. Keyworth said that there is no energy crisis. The crisis, he explained, is simply that people refuse to accept the solution. The solution which Dr. Keyworth has in mind is increased utilization of our abundant supplies of solid fuels and, in particular, uranium. I share his view concerning the solution to our energy needs. The use of uranium fuel is a safe, clean, and dependable means to generate our electric power. It is time that we addressed the real energy crisis: the refusal to accept the nuclear solution. The reason for the refusal is not difficult to find. It is nihilistic thinking about risk. Under this thinking, we assume the worst possible case and act accordingly, simply because we cannot prove to a total certainty that nuclear energy is perfectly safe. If this absolutist approach were generally applied throughout our society, there is no doubt all of us would soon be sitting around our campfires fearfully holding the wild animals at bay with our trusty spears. Today I am here to enlist your support in reversing the regulatory trend that threatens the very extistence of the nuclear power industry. As distinguished scientists, engineers and businessmen, you can use your influence to help bring rational regulation to the industry. Our industry supports strong safety and environmental protection programs. We understand the need for and do not object to reasonable regulation. Many anti-pollution measures can be practical to implement, cost effective and highly successful in minimizing environmental impacts. However, it is a fact of life that in the field of health and safety regulation, the law of diminishing returns operates with a vengeance. Absolute or near-absolute safety is impossible and any attempt to achieve it is intolerably costly. Fixation on absolute safety is particularly acute in the regulation of the nuclear power industry. Government Agencies, overly anxious to allay the irrational fears of those opposed to nuclear power, are literally regulating the industry to death - exactly the result sought by the anti-nuclear groups. Dr. Robert L. DuPont wrote in a recent issue of [Business Week]: "The nuclear power industry has been virtually stopped in the U.S. [because of fear]. This is true despite the fact that for more than 20 years the commercial nuclear industry has operated under unprecedented public health scrutiny and that to date there have been no radiation-related injuries, let alone deaths, suffered by any member of the public."1 I believe a useful way to convey the nature of the problem faced by the nuclear industry is to review an example of [unreasonable] regulation. While the example relates to our domestic industry, I am certain there are similar situations in other countries. For the example I will use the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's recently issued regulations governing the stabilization of uranium mill tailings.2 These regulations, known as the Uranium Mill Licensing Requirements, specify, among other things, that radon emanation from uranium mill tailings be limited to no more than 2 pCi/m2-sec. First, one must understand that this standard will have virtually no impact on the total amount of radon to which the public is exposed. Radon emitted from even completely unstabilized tailings piles is a tiny fraction--much less than 1%--of the amount of radon released from natural soils in the United States.3 In fact, it is far outweighed by natural variations in the background flux. For example, changes in the level of the Great Salt Lake in recent years have had [eight times] as much effect on the amount of radon released into the Salt Lake City regional air than the annual release from the Vitro Mill tailings pile located in that city.4 Nevertheless, NRC claims that the standard is required to protect the public. The Commission admits, however, that there are no studies which establish that exposure to radon at the low levels associated with uranium mill tailings will result in any adverse health effects.5 In the absence of actual evidence, the Commission assumes that some such effects will occur on the basis of the linear, non-threshold model.6 Employing this model, NRC calculates that the maximum hypothetical risk for the average member of the population is only about 1 in 70,000,000 from the radon that would be emitted from [three times] the number of mills now in existence, even if the tailings produced through the year 2000 are left unstabilized.7 NRC has elsewhere explained that this level of risk would be equivalent to the risk posed by "a few puffs on a cigarette, a few sips of wine, driving the family car about 6 blocks, flying about 2 miles, canoeing for 3 seconds, or being a man age 60 for 11 seconds." This level of risk is [de minimis] in comparison to other risks commonly and readily incurred in our society.9 Moreover, even this remote risk is overstated. A group of prominent health physicists, including experts from the Department of Energy, The Environmental Protection Agency, Britain, Canada and Germany recently published a study indicating that the risk to the public per unit exposure to radon can be no greater than one-third that suggested by the Commission, and [may in fact be zero].l0 Regulators routinely rationalize the need for their regulations. For example, NRC attempts to justify the radon flux standard because it is necessary to reduce the risk to someone who builds a house on top of a tailings pile. This possibility, however, is totally unrealistic because the Mill Tailings Act requires that stabilized tailings be transferred to

Defining Productivity Productivity is a principal concern to all organizations - industrial, commercial, government, and academic. As a ratio of output to input, productivity measures the efficiency of an industrial process, much as thermodynamic efficiency measures the useful work obtained from the available energy consumed. However, there is one important difference. Whereas thermodynamic efficiency is a dimensionless a ratio of energies, productivity output and input are usually measured in different physical units. Nevertheless, the resulting ratio is a normalized expression for unit of output per unit of input to the process. In the early days of coal, mining was essentially a hand loading operation. There was little expenditure of alternative forms of energy within the process. Loading required expenditures of human energy on the order of 1.2 MJ/t (1,000 Btu per st). And if we accept the conventional value "you load 16 tons," the output to input ratio is 14.5 t (16 st) per manshift. In energy terms, it is on the order of 116 MJ/t (100,000 Btu per st) produced per labor Btu expended. However, the latter measure of efficiency was not meaningful in economic terms, while the 14.5 t (16 st) per manshift was significant. Since labor was the principal component of cost, it represented a direct relationship to the cost of production: [ ] Furthermore, when workers were paid directly on the basis of tons produced, the labor cost per ton was specified directly by this rate. With the introduction of mechanized loading, significant increases in productivity occurred, when measured on the basis of tons per manshift. Electric power consumed about 11.6-116 MJ/t (10,000-100,000 Btu per st). This makes the 29-GJ/t (25 million Btu per st) coal output/input ratio between 100 and 1,000. That is one or two orders of magnitude lower than hand loading. However, electric energy was quite inexpensive compared to labor, which made the mechanization economically efficient. The accepted productivity measure continued to be tons per manshift. This measure includes some of the effects of mechanization: namely, the additional manpower needed to maintain the machines and support the equipment that uses electrical energy. However, it does not consider the capital and operating costs that relate to mechanized equipment. As a result, the concept of tons per machine-shift has emerged as an accepted measure of shift productivity. The only appropriate measure that encorporates the productivity of men and machines is an economic one. The output is the tonnage per shift and the impact is the cost per shift. [ ] This is simply the inverse of the cost per ton. In addition, much flexibility is available in allo¬cating costs to the three categories. This adds a level of intangibility to the measure. The amount of information needed to obtain all of the required costs is appreciable compared to the simple matter of counting tons and workers. Furthermore, financial information relating to production costs is closely held by mining companies, so historical statistics on economic productivity are not publicly available. To extend the concept further, consider the value of the tonnage produced, to obtain a dimensionless ($/$) measure of economic productivity.

M.S. Azun The article unfortunately has some serious flaws negating the usefulness of the paper. The authors claim that kriging (linear kriging) is superior to other methods such as polygon. This is not the case. The deterministic methods (referring to polygon, ID, IDS, etc.) should not be compared with the statistical methods (linear kriging, disjunctive kriging, etc.) because they differ not only in their assumptions, but also their tools used in estimation. Thus, they give different results. By comparing the results of deterministic methods and linear kriging, the authors conclude that polygon, IDS, and linear kriging give an average thickness close to the value obtained from realizations. Besides, they argue that linear kriging gives less variance than the others (Fig. 2). The first conclusion is expected, due to the well-known central limit theorem. The second is the result of the statistical properties of different estimators. Thus, the comparison presented in the paper is rather meaningless because the authors have failed to follow basic statistical procedures. The numerical results of different approaches to an estimation problem cannot be generalized. In conclusion, the paper is not a meaningful contribution, and sadly, quite erroneous. Reply by E.Y. Baafi and Y.C. Kim The two key contentions made by M.S. Azun regarding the paper are: deterministic methods should not be compared with statistical methods and, hence, the results are erroneous; and the paper does not make a meaningful contribution. The first contention is an academic one. Most practitioners in ore reserve estimation could care less whether the tool they are using falls under a deterministic or a probabilistic method, so long as it gives the desired answers. It is probably for this reason that, whenever any new tool such as linear kriging is introduced to practioners in the mining industry, they would like to see a comparison test performed between the existing and the more familiar tools with a new and "strange" tool. Only when a new tool passes such a test, the generally conservative mining community would begin to utilize the new tool to its advantage. The second contention, is a subjective one. The final judgment should be left up to the readers within the mining community. If kriging is accepted more among practitioners, partly due to the paper, then the paper makes a practical contribution to the state-of-the art in ore reserve estimation. Finally, M.S. Azun entirely missed two main points in the paper. The first is that any comparative study of kriging vs. Polygonal or IDS should be performed for local estimation and not for global estimation. In the past, kriging was frequently compared with other existing tools in its performance on global estimation. Such results were nearly identical due to the central limit theorem effect, which further prevented the acceptance of kriging by practitioners. The second point is that a single case study using an existing property, as it was frequently performed in the past, is not sufficient because results depend not only on the tool itself, but also on the nature of the mineralization.

Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use theirs in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 m (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two¬seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al.( 1990), surprisingly, does not give any geologi¬cal interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics. It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimen-

The Tessenderlo-Kerley Leach process has been shown to be effective in the removal of residual copper from molybdenite concentrates. Concentrates of varying mineralogy, including those containing relatively large amounts of chalcopyrite, have been successfully leached on laboratory and pilot plant scales. The lixiviant system is ammonia and ammonium bisulfite with air / oxygen addition. An abrasive is added which greatly enhances the kinetics, and it is subsequently screened out and reused. The dissolved copper is easily recovered using existing technology. Extraction profiles, reagent consumptions, and mineralogical data are presented.

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage mining at Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine can best be defined as a horizontal breasting method utilizing the broken ore for the mining floor and to provide wall support, with draw from a series of boxholes or draw¬points at the base of the stoping block. In choosing to shrink a given block of ore, the initial investigation centers on the ore configuration and grade, the expected ground conditions in the stoping area, the expected profit compared to alternative mining methods, the future production requirements, development lead time, the availability and type of equipment in the area, and the availability of experienced miners. These factors are weighed against other mining methods and shrinkage mining is chosen when the advantages outweigh the dis¬advantages. These will be discussed in more detail later. At Inco Ltd.'s Crean Hill mine, shrinkage mining makes up 17% of total mine production and is decreasing due to the advent of advanced blasthole techniques, notably in-the-hole drilling. Shrinkage is an adaptable mining method that is currently employed in narrow irregular ore zones, as undercuts for in-the-hole blast¬hole stopes, in ore bodies that do not extend from level to level, and in areas where quick production is required with a minimum of capital outlay or minimum develop¬ment. Two major types are currently in use which are classified on the basis of type of draw system employed. These are the utilization of load-haul-dump (LHD) equipment drawing from drawpoints, and the slusher and train method drawing from boxholes into a slusher trench and loading into a train. A third method being phased out is drawing from chutes directly into a train. In all three methods the actual stoping operation remains the same. In the initial planning of a mining block, the ore body is first located using an exploration diamond drill¬ing program. This is essentially done at a 130-m (400¬ft) spacing and it gives an indication of the amount of ore, grade of ore, the configuration of the ore body, as well as other geological features such as ground condi¬tions which will affect future mining. This drilling is done from an exploration drift 165 m (500 ft) long in the hanging wall and covers a vertical extent of 330 to 670 m (1000 to 2000 ft). However, these data are not accurate enough for detailed planning. When the de¬cision has been made to mine, a preliminary develop¬ment drill drift is driven in such a position that it can serve the dual purposes of allowing the ore body to be drilled off in detail, or of later serving as a haulage or access drift. Diamond drilling from this drift is usually on a 15-m (50-ft) grid spacing and gives adequate information for detailed planning. Utilizing the drill data, a decision is made on the mining type. For a shrinkage operation, the stoping block is ideally 49 m (150 ft) in length and a maximum of 13 m (40 ft) in width. Lengths of 65 m (200 ft) are considered a practical maximum because of the length of time the back of the stope remains open during the min¬ing of a cut. A minimum length of 13 m (40 ft) is used because the amount of time spent in opening a new cut increases in comparison with the total stoping time. The maximum width of 13 m (40 ft) is used because ex¬perience with the ground indicates that generally stope backs tend to be unstable over greater widths. However, widths of 33 m (100 ft) have been mined. A minimum width of 5 m (15 ft) is used to allow an effective draw, but in unusual cases, a width of 3 m (10 ft) has been mined successfully. The dip of the ore should not be less than 1.04 rad (60°). Angles flatter than this will not pull properly resulting in inefficient mining because of ore hang-ups on the footwall side of the stope and the need for large stagings on the hanging wall. In considering shrinkage, mining ground conditions play an important role. Strong shearing, cross faulting, or dikes are avoided. These usually cause dangerous mining conditions and an alternative safer mining method which will give adequate support to these adverse ground conditions is employed. Production requirements are taken into considera¬tion when planning a shrinkage mining program. In it¬self, shrinkage mining is capable of producing ore in a relatively short time with little capital development. If quick production is required, this method can produce ore rapidly as all that is required is that the draw system be completed and the miners with jacklegs and stopers produce a limited amount of ore. The obvious disadvan¬tage is that not all the ore broken can be pulled from the stope immediately. However, a mining horizon with sev¬eral shrinkage stopes in different stages of production can adequately maintain scheduled tonnage require¬ments, the cycle being stopes under development, stopes actively mining, and stopes completed and pulling. When the decision has been made to use shrinkage mining in a given block, the haulage and draw system is driven. The proximity of the orepass system dictates whether the system is to be a LHD operation or a slusher trench operation. If the orepass system is in close prox¬imity to the stoping block, LHD equipment is employed because of its ability to operate efficiently over short haulage distances. A long tram to the orepass usually dictates a slusher trench operation with haulage by train. Internal orepass systems are used effectively with LHD equipment with a load-out and retramming taking place on a lower horizon. In addition, stoping blocks in older areas of the mine are developed track because of the capital cost involved in converting an existing level to trackless mining. DRIFT DEVELOPMENT USING LHD EQUIPMENT The haulage drift for a draw system using LHD equipment is driven parallel to the ore body in the foot¬wall at a sufficient distance to allow an 11.5-m (35-ft) drawpoint to be driven into the ore (Fig. 1). The actual position of the drift depends entirely upon the ore con¬figuration and the drift size depends on the equipment to be used. Drift sizes of 4.6 x 4.1 m (14 x 121/2 ft) for an St-4 and 3.8 x 3.6 m (111/2 x 11 ft) for an St-2 meet company and government clearance standards and allow sufficient space to accommodate a ventilation pipe. INTRODUCTION Homestake Mining Co. owns and operates the Bull¬dog Mountain mine near Creede, CO. Lead-silver con¬centrates are produced from ores extracted from narrow veins which dip from 1.04 to 1.39 rad (60 to 80°). An¬nual mill throughput is approximately 90 700 t (100,000 st). Ore shoots average 2 m (7 ft) in width and the ore is often weak, muddy, and poorly consolidated. Walls can be either strong or highly fractured along the strike of the veins. Cut-and-fill methods were initially selected to mine the deposit and considerable overhand mining occurred during the initial stages of the mine. Because of un¬stable ground conditions, mine management recognized that other methods would have to be employed. Undercut-and-fill mining was adapted to extract the loose ore from narrow veins and is presently the primary method used. Approximately 80% of the annual pro¬duction is extracted by this system. Loading ramps are positioned along the strike of the vein on 90-m (300-ft) intervals to allow for 45-m (150-ft) long cuts in each direction from the extraction raise. This interval was selected for efficient slusher operation and stope cycling. Loading ramps rather than chutes were selected for ore movement into 4.5-t (5-st) Granby-type cars because of extremely sticky ore conditions. Mined-out areas are filled with deslimed mill sands. Sand is pumped from the mill into two mine storage dams where the water is decanted. Each dam has a 544-t (600-st) capacity. Sand is pumped into the mine at a 30 to 40% slurry through 2195 m (7200 ft) of 51-mm (2-in.) thick wall pipe. When called for, sand is reslurried within the dams to a density of 55 to 65% and pumped to the particular mine opening requiring fill. Dry cement is added to the slurry prior to pumping. The capacity of the mine fill system is 20 t/h (22 stph). DEVELOPMENT Vertical development below the main adit level oc¬curs on 61-m (200-ft) intervals from an internal winze. Main haulage drifts or laterals are 2.7 x 2.7 m (9 x 9 ft) in section and driven parallel to the vein structures. Ground conditions generally dictate that better progress can be realized in the footwall than in the hanging wall. A distance of approximately 21 m (70 ft) is maintained between vein and drift openings to accommodate a smooth 18-m (60-ft) radius curve for crosscuts which are driven on 91-m (300-ft) intervals. Approximately 18 m (60 ft) of tail room is driven past the vein inter¬section to accommodate train loading. Ore and waste are hauled using diesel or electric driven locomotives operating over 18-kg (40-Ib) rail [762-mm (30-in.) gage]. Loading ramps are established above each crosscut¬ vein intersection. Scram drifts are then driven in the vein to determine the width and grade of the ore. If a prior decision to mine the block had been reached, then the scram is driven only far enough [about 12 m (40 ft)] to establish a drawpoint and scraper tail room. In most cases, the drawpoint is a 2.1 x 2.1-m (7 x 7-ft) cutout driven about 2.4 m (8 ft) into the footwall. On the level above, a raise bore station is established in the footwall to one side of the crosscut-vein inter¬section. The station is of sufficient size to accommo¬date a Robbins 41R raise boring machine. Support for the station is accomplished with 1.2 and 1.8-m (4 and 6-ft) roof bolts and wire screening. Once completed, a 152-mm (6-in.) concrete slab is poured and the raise drill set in position to center the 1.5-m (5-ft) diam hole approximately 1.8 m (6 ft) from the vein footwall. A 229-mm (9-in.) pilot hole is then drilled to the scram cutout below and reamed back to full diameter (see Fig. 1). STOPING Initial mining in a typical undercut-and-fill stope be¬gins from the top of the borehole. The initial cut can be either immediately beneath the track level or the old scram drift depending upon the particular situation. Cuts vary but are generally 2.4 to 3 m (8 to 10 ft) high. Support is accomplished by square-set timber, overhead caps, or roof bolts and screening depending upon ground conditions. Once the initial cut is removed, underhand timber and screen is installed and cemented sand fill placed. The stope is then ready for undercut mining. Prepara¬tion work begins with sinking 4.5 to 6 m (15 to 20 ft) on the borehole plus cutting a slot to the vein. As sinking progresses, hanging sets are installed to provide man¬way and service facilities. Hanging sets 1.7 m (5 ft 8 in.) long and 1.6 x 2.2 m (5 ft 4 in. x 7 ft 4 in.) in section are installed with steel hangers similar to shaft sets. Framed 203 x 203-mm (8 x 8-in.) timbers are made up in advance and shipped to the stope during sinking operations. When manway and service facilities are completed to the floor of cut to be mined, generally 3.65 to 4.3 m (12 to 14 ft) below the previous sand fill, the ore is removed to the hanging wall plus a round each way along the vein. Levelers or long stringers are then installed over the raise opening to support the work deck, slusher, and grizzly opening. All waste and ore from the sinking process is fed by gravity to the raise (see Fig. 2). Once the stope is equipped, mining pro¬gresses outward in each direction from the grizzly open¬ing. Stope equipment consists of 907 kg (2000 lb) pull air tuggers, timber skips, 11-kW (15-hp) ventilation fans, 15 to 22-kW (20 to 30-hp) electric slushers, 762 to 1270-mm (30 to 50-in.) scrapers, 67-mm (25/a-in. ) jackleg drills, as well as other drilling and blasting supplies. In narrow stopes [generally less than 2 m (7 ft) wide], no support is required for the underhand caps of the previous fill. Where wide sections in the vein occur, segment braces are installed beneath the caps to insure that the sand support cannot slip away from the hanging wall. 3.1 INTRODUCTION The final subsidence basin discussed so far is that developed long after mining has stopped. In a supercritical final subsidence basin, the central portion subsides uniformly. Thus any structures located there are not subjected to any final permanent surface deformation. But this statement is only true for the final subsidence basin. When the face is moving, the structures are subjected to dynamic deformations associated with the dynamic subsidence basin. For instance the house in front of a moving face (location 1 in Fig. 3.1) is subjected to the maximum tensile strain and the maximum positive curvahue. When it falls behind the face in location 2, it is subjected to the maximum compressive strain and the maximum negative curvature. When the house is far behind the face in location 3, it returns to its original condition with only uniform subsidence. However, the magnitude of the dynamic deformations may be sufficiently large to damage a structure in locations 1 and 2 before it reaches location 3. Therefore it is very important to study the characteristics of the dynamic subsidence basin. Under normal conditions, when the face has advanced for a distance approximately one-sixth to one-third of the seam depth from the setup entry, depending on the seam depth and the physical properties of the overburden strata, the movement of the over- burden strata reaches the surface, whereupon the surface also be- gins to deform. Thereafter, the surface point where the movement initiates is always located at a fixed distance ahead of the face. The angle between the vertical line at the faceline and the line connecting the movement initiation point on the surface and the face- line is the angle of advance influence, w. The angle of advance influence can be used to determine the distance, [ 1], which is the influence zone ahead of the face. w is approximately 20O to 35 O for the northern Appalachian coalfield (Peng and Geng, 1984). The movement of each surface point is a relatively complicated process both in time and in space, because the relative position between the faceline and each surface point varies continuously, so that the direction and rate of movement for each surface point differ. In the following sections, the movements of each surface point on the major cross section are illustrated. 3.2 DYNAMIC SURFACE MOVEMENTS Dynamic surface movements include dynamic subsidence and displacement. The movement of each point on the subsidence basin is different as the face advances from 1 to 6 (Fig. 3.2). Surface points A and B, being far in front of the moving face, subside and displace toward the face (i.e., from A to A' and from B to B'). Point C, which is quite near but in front of the moving face, subsides continuously but displaces initially toward the face and then turns to pure subsidence ending up at C'. Point D, which is behind the face above the gob, subsides continuously, but displaces initially toward the face when it is in front of the face and reverses to follow the moving face when it is behind the face, with the amount of displacement toward the face being larger than that following the face. As a result the net displacement is toward the center of the gob (i.e., from point D to D'). The same statement is true for point E. For point F, the net displacement is zero, i.e it appears to have dropped down vertically to F'. For points G to I, the net displacements are in the direction of face advance except the magnitudes are increasing in sequential order. Point 1, has reached the final dynamic position of 1'. In other words, the face has passed sufficiently away such that it does not affect the movement at point I. All other points (A to H) are still within the face influenced area. 3.3 DEVELOPMENT OF DYNAMIC SUBSIDENCE PROFILES When the face has moved for a distance of h/6-h/3 from the setup entry, surface subsidence reaches the surface. At this time the surface subsidence basin is very mild (S, in Fig. 3.3), and it is symmetrical about the center. As the face continues to advance, the maximum subsidence continues to increase, and its location moves with, but falls farther behind the face. When the face has advanced a sufficient distance, e.g., (0.9-2.2)h, away from the setup entry, the maximum subsidence reaches the maximum possible value (curve S,). At this time, the dynamic subsidence profile is fully developed. Thereafter both sides of the dynamic subsidence profile become stabilized. The subsidence profile on the face side moves with the advancing face in an orderly manner (curves S, and S,). When the face stops, the face side of the profile continues to subside and becomes stabilized (curves;) sometime after. Curve S; is the final subsidence profile (see Fig. 2.22). 3.4 DEVELOPMENT OF DYNAMIC DISPLACEMENT AND SLOPE PROFILES The dynamic displacement profile moves with the advancing face (Fig. 3.4), but changes according to some specific rules. When the face has advanced to A, the surface begins to move and its dynamic displacement profile has two maximum values (curve Ua): one positive near the setup entry moving toward the face advancing direction and the other negative on the face side also moving toward the face advancing direction. As the face continues to advance, the positive maximum displacement on the setup entry side increases and moves toward the face continuously. The same statement is true for the negative maximum displacement on the face side. When the opening increases to the critical size, both the maximum positive and negative displacements reach the peak values and remain constant thereafter. Notice that when the opening becomes critical in size, the point of zero displacement no longer moves with the advancing face. Rather it spreads into an area of zero displacement (curve Ue) and expands as the face advances. When the face stops, the displacement on the face side continues until it becomes stabilized (curve Úe). Curve Úe is the final displacement profile. The ratio of maximum dynamic to final displacement ranges from 60 to 75%. The dynamic slope profile follows the same patterns of change. The ratio of maximum dynamic to maximum final slope ranges from 50 to 80%. The maximum slope decreases with in- creasing rate of face advance (Peng and Geng, 1984). It must be pointed out that except for those near both sides of the profiles, each point on the displacement and slope profiles is subjected to a cycle of positive and negative displacements and slopes depending on its relative position with respect to the face.

Because of the nature of the breakage in the Barmac vertical spindle impactor, the 80% reduction ratio is very small, so that when the energy efficiency is calculated by Bond's method, it appears to be very low. However, the product size distribution contains a high proportion of fines. It is argued that the production of these fines accounts for the high energy consumption, and Bond's method is modified to account for this, by considering the crusher to be, effectively, a number of smaller crushers in parallel, each having a different reduction ratio.

Gold chlorination which will be presented in this paper is limited entirely to the use of gaseous chlorine in a fluidized bed reactor at elevated temperatures in the absence of aqueous water. The only water used in this process is that which is used in scrubbing the effluents. Low temperatures are defined as those below 500°C. All experimentation for this paper was carried out on a laboratory scale, with all calculations extrapolated frpm this. Some of the data is drawn from work with other projects which have been operated at pilot and larger scale.

The economic value of calcium carbonate when used as an extender or filler basically falls into two categories: 1. Lessening the cost of the final product to which it is added. 2. Contributing desirable physicals to the final product. In most instances, a combination of these two may be achieved. The mineral limestone which is found in abundant quantities in many areas of the world is the source of 99% (+) of the calcium carbonate used as fillers and extenders. Precipitated, or chemically formed, calcium carbonate is also available, but by comparison, in very limited quantities.

In alkaline pulp, galena is depressed by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), while Cu(II) -activated sphalerite exhibits a high floatability so that satisfactory separation can be achieved. In addition to hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding of NaCMC with galena is confirmed by infrared (IR) spectra; only hydrogen bonding is involved between NaCMC and Cu(II)-activated sphalerite. It is also found that the greater the degree of substitution and polymerimtion of NaCMC, the stronger the depressive effect of NaCMC and that lower stirring speed favors the depression.

An economic analysis for evaluating coal preparation in Appalachian Region is presented. A complete coal preparation plant is used to deter- mine the capital and operating costs. Using profit maximization as a decision criterion, an optimal process flowsheet for given coal characteristics can be selected among the process alternatives by a process-economic model. A deterministic analysis is used to calculate the discounted cash flow interest rate of return and project the selling prices of clean coal products. A probabilistic evaluation is further made to quantify the risk involved in obtaining the desired profit levels.

Prediction of excavation rates is a critical element in the pre-planning of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) project. A realistic evaluation of performance expectations is needed that reflects both the knowns and unknowns of the excavation process and geologic conditions. Current planning procedures are often based on deterministic “best guess” estimations. In this paper, a probabilistic approach to performance simulation is presented that will permit rational consideration of general and project-specific uncertainties in establishing realistic performance estimates. Companion to the simulation software is a database of over 600 public-domain case histories.

Poor plant start-up performance is usually blamed on poor design and unsatisfactory equipment. But, in most cases, the real cause of poor performance is inadequate preparation for operations and maintenance. Inadequate maintenance preparation, unlike inadequate operations preparation, will not immediately manifest itself in a new plant. However, not taking advantage of the window of opportunity afforded a new plant to organize the maintenance operation ensures that the new equipment honeymoon is unexpectedly short. Also, once a plant has entered a “breakdown mode,” it is extremely difficult to turn around.

When longwall equipment is being specified, a nominal capacity is generally given on which to base the design of the various face and out-bye systems and components. This capacity generally comes from a nominal annual capacity requirement based on realistic utilization rates. From illustrative examples of simple system simulation, this paper sets out to show that a single nominal capacity is not sufficient to size the different systems. The manner in which the Longwall is operated and the overall system configuration and availability can have a significant impact on overall productivity.

Zinc cementation of high-temperature carbon eluates is now used extensively in gold processing to replace electrowinning. Under these conditions, zinc consumption is high. In this paper, zinc solubility is press rated us functions of temperature, cyanide concentration and pH in the presence of gold, silver and mercury cyanides (both individually and in combined solutions). Based on the experimental results, cementation of these metals is characterized and discussed. The importance of cyanide concentration in cementation efficiency and the effect of mercury and its co-precipitation onto zinc are also discussed.

Condition monitoring of conveyor belting has become an established tool for maintenance programming, replacement strategies and quality assurance for belt conveyor systems. What is less well known is that the condition of the conveyor belting is usually a symptom of problems in other areas rather than the problem source. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art in belt monitoring and the move towards on-line NDT systems. The use of belt monitoring data as an indicator for overall system design, maintenance and operation is also discussed.
