Constructed by stonemasons over 120 years ago, a portion of the Trout Brook Storm Sewer Interceptor (TBI) owned and operated by the Capitol Region Watershed District in Saint Paul, Minnesota, needed rehabilitation. A routine inspection of the 10-foot limestone block tunnel revealed degraded and missing mortar between the blocks, allowing significant infiltration and soil migration through the tunnel joints. Conditions, including damaged and missing blocks, were considerably worse in a 250-foot-long segment beneath a busy mainline railroad corridor. Barr’s solution included tuck-pointing to repair the mortar joints, shotcrete overlay, and construction of a hybrid cast-in-place/shotcrete “tunnel within a tunnel” to support the mainline railroad loads.

Flotation collectors play a crucial role in mineral flotation by selectively adhering to mineral surfaces and aiding in their separation from gangue material. They are heteropolar molecules, as defined by Sutherland and Wark (1955), featuring non-polar hydrocarbon chains and polar groups interacting with mineral surfaces to induce hydrophobicity selectively. The importance of collectors in mineral processing, as underscored by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010), lies in their ability to enhance recovery rates and improve selectivity, thereby optimizing the extraction of valuable minerals from complex ores. Collectors are classified based on their mechanism of action, as proposed by Laskowski (2010). This classification categorizes collectors into three groups: water-soluble compounds, water-insoluble “oily” collectors, and water-insoluble amphipathic compounds forming molecular films at the water/gas interface. This complements the chemical structure-based classification by Sutherland and Wark (1955) and Suoninen and Laajalehto (1993), offering a comprehensive understanding of collector diversity in flotation systems. Collector selection is an iterative process crucial for optimizing mineral processing efficiency, as emphasized by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010). Understanding the significance of collector mixing or synergy outcomes is paramount for enhancing mineral flotation efficiency and sustainability. Taguta, O’Connor, and McFadzean (2018) demonstrate that mixed collector systems enhance interaction enthalpies and microflotation recoveries, indicating improved performance. McFadzean, Castelyn, and O’Connor (2012), along with Critchley and Riaz (1991), delve into investigating synergistic interactions between collectors, offering insights for strategic selection. Observations from the study of collector synergy, as noted by Wakamatsu et al. (1980), reveal nuanced relationships surpassing individual collector behaviors. The methodology outlined in this paper provides valuable guidance for classifying and selecting collectors based on specific application needs, while also suggesting the potential for synergistically improving recovery across fine, intermediate, and coarse particles.

Although techniques and practices of mining are highly advanced, coal pillar bursts or bumps continue to occur. Many uncertainties remain because of the highly anisotropic characteristics of coal seams that are associated with geologic structure and the mining-induced spatial redistribution of stress in coal pillars. Thus, to prevent fatalities in underground coal mining, continuous efforts are required to better understand the catastrophic failure mechanisms in coal mines. In this study, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the Discrete Fracture Networks (DFNs) technique was performed to better understand the true anisotropic behavior of the specimens acquired from a bump-prone underground coal mine. The spatial characteristics of the dis- continuities (i.e., cleats and bedding planes) as input data for the 3DEC model are estimated based on the results of the laboratory tests and field observations. The DFNs explicitly generated the coal seam that was poorly or well cleated, indicating the different spacing between cleat apertures using the probability distribution functions for fracture density (or frequency) and size. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) are also considered by Monte Carlo simulations. Simulation results of laboratory tests using the 3DEC model and DFNs technique agreed well with the results of the laboratory tests. These calibrated results can be used as we seek to evaluate bump risk by modeling at field scale.

It was attempted to revitalize an old sulfide leach dump by increasing the oxygen content within the dump. Compressed air was introduced into the old dump. This was accomplished by drilling 300 foot angle holes into the dump surface with an Aardvark drill which holes are then cased with 1-1/2 inch perforated PVC pipe. Compressed air is injected through these cased holes during a 10 day rest cycle. The second case consists of bedding perforated polyethylene pipe at the interface between the old dump surface and the next Lift of a new dump. Compressed air is then blown through the bedded perforated pipe on a continuous basis while leach solution is applied.

New is a relative term, and, when used with reference to a concept as old as shaft kilns can be applied to a number of designs. In this case the design that is the subject of this paper, is known as the ring or annular shaft kiln as developed by Mr. Karl Beckenbach of West Germany. The first&apos; operating unit was rated 185 tons per day and was installed in 1962. Today, there are approximately 84 units in operation in Western Europe and Japan. Twenty-one additional units are in the process of erection or on order. Developed sizes range from approximately 100 to 330 tons per day. Units of over 500 tons are in the design stage, however, the largest units presently operating are rated 330 tons per day, <the first: of this size having been installed in 1966. "Figure" 1 is an elevation view of the unit. It is a single vertical cylinder to which are attached the required service platforms, combustion chambers, injectors and distribution piping. Auxiliaries such as recuperator, exhaust fan and dust collector are mounted on the appropriate service platform. The charging pan, feed conveyor, etc. are mounted at the kiln top. At the bottom of the kiln is the silo with a vibrator type discharger, and mounted separately is the required blower for injector air and fan for internal cooling.

Continuing advances in manufactured diamond materials used in rock cutting tools have created a new generation of high production tools for mining. This paper will review the three major manufactured diamond products available for the mining industry as supplied by General Electric Company, Specialty Materials Department, and examine the ways in which these materials are employed. As an integral part of this examination, the economic impact of manufactured diamond tools will be evaluated. Time and again, one will find that the premium price of these tools is economically justified when compared to traditional tools.

The Pioche District of Lincoln County in southeastern Nevada (Figures 1 and 2) has been an historically important producer of silver, zinc, and lead. Economic geology of districts in the Pioche area is summarized most adequately in recent reports by Tschanz and Pampeyan (1) and Gemmill (2) and only a few major aspects will be discussed here. Production in the Pioche District began in 1869 and early mining concentrated on silver-bearing fissures in lower Cambrian quartzites. In the early 1870&apos;s the Pioche District was second only to the Comstock Lode in world silver production (3). More recent mining activities have centered on the other major ore type in the area, bedded replacement of lower Cambrian carbonates by Ag-Zn-Pb sulfide ore. Production of replacement ore peaked around 1950. The present study is focused on the Pan American Mine because it is an excellent example of low grade carbonate replacement deposits, because there is little structural dismemberment, and because access was readily available. Most previous workers have suggested that both the fissure vein deposits and the bedded replacement deposits of the Pioche districts are a result of spatially related Laramide igneous activity. The purpose of this study is to determine whether ore genesis is a result of igneous activity or if mineralization might be related to late diagenetic processes such as formed Mississippi Valley "type" deposits. Stable isotopes of sulfur, carbon, and oxygen in ore and gangue minerals have been studied to determine the probable isotopic composition of the ore fluid and paleomagnetic studies of the carbonate rocks have been utilized to determine timing of mineralization. Additionally, petrographic and field studies of carbonate lithologies were undertaken in an attempt to delineate non-structural controls on ore localization. These studies are still proceeding and the results presented herein are, therefore, preliminary in nature.

The problem of roof control in the coal-mining industry is of major importance inasmuch as 65 percent of all coal-mine fatalities result from falls of roof, face, or ribs. The Health and Safety Research and Testing Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh, Pa., is engaged in several programs directed toward increasing safety in coal mining. The Roof Control Research Group has 4 programs aimed at reducing roof fall accidents. One of these programs is the use of sonic techniques to explore mine roof strata.

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year. Despite significant safety improvements, the mining industry remains one of the most hazardous occupations globally and the evacuation of Miners, when an uncontrollable incident occurs in the mine, is the best bet to saving lives. However, Human factors/behaviors during an emergency are likely to influence the evacuation performance. Other industries have made a significant effort to determine these human factors that can impede evacuation performance, however, the current state-of-the-art in mine evacuation or self-rescue is that the evacuation route is predetermined, and a static sign is used to direct miners to the predetermined safe location. This method is limited in representing actual conditions that arise in a real emergency, neglecting the different behaviors displayed by humans. As optimization of the evacuation of a mine plays a fundamental role in emergencies and modeling evacuation behavior and movement of miners is a complex task, this research utilized Agent-Based simulations to simulate the evacuation behavior and performance. It was observed that people with the smart evacuation device made fewer mistakes and arrived at the safe place in less time compared to those have no access to the device. The Mathematical model used in optimizing the shortest path to a safe place is also explained in this paper.

Stratiform uranium deposits occur in Canada along the north shore of Lake Huron near the base of the Middle Precambrian Huronian Supergroup. Outcrop of the Buronian Supergroup extends for over 400 km from Sault Ste. Marie in the west eastward through Sudbury and then northeastward to Cobalt. Maximum stratigraphic thickness exceeds 5 km. The predominant Huronian rock type is metamorphosed sandstone (quartzite), with sub- ordinate argillite, conglomerate, mixtite (possibly tillite), volcanic rocks, and minor limestone, Much of the quartzite is highly feldspathic. Substantial uranium ore was first discovered in Huronian rocks in 1953 and has been exploited continuously since the initial mine-mill plant was constructed at the Pronto ore body, 30 km south of the present townsite of Elliot Lake. Only one ore body remains in production, however. It is shared by Rio Algom and Denison Mines 14 km north of the town of Elliot Lake.

A modified 3D Lerchs-Grossmann (LG) graph tree algorithm is presented that generates the complete set of nested maximum valued pits in a single run. This modified LG algorithm looks at the relative strength (average value) of the branches (groups of blocks). Pointers are allocated and pruned until there are no members of weaker (lower average value) branches overlying members of stronger (higher aver-age value) branches. The final set of strong branches are listed in order of decreasing strength. The pits they represent form the maximum valued convex hull for a single variable pit limit parameterization. A description of the algorithm is given along with examples of how it has been applied at Newmont.

A significant news item appearing in a coal mining journal in November 1969 stated simply that a Caterpillar D-333-CNA engine had received Bureau of Mines Schedule 31 approval. This item occurring at the time a new mining property in Martin County of East Kentucky was being prospected and prepared for mining, resulted in the manage-ment of Martin County Coal Corporation asking the question, "Why not use diesel equipment in our new operation?" Martin County Coal Corporation is part of the A. T. Massey Coal Company, Incorporated organization. The property being developed is on a 17,500 acre leasehold obtained from Pocahontas Land Corporation and lies in the Wolf Creek area of Martin County. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this undeveloped section of Kentucky to tap a huge reserve of steam coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all of the production from Martin County Coal Corporation mines which ultimately is projected to be 2,000,000 tons annually. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton are being deep mined now and it is in those mines that the diesel haulage equipment was introduced. This paper will endeavor to trace the steps loading to the introduction of the first diesel-powered Wagner Mining Equipment Company ScoopTram in a coal mine in America. It will further elaborate on the features which make this unit a very versatile and useful utility unit as well as the safety features which are incorporated in the machine. The Eagle Mountain Mine of the Kaiser Steel Corporation is located in the California portion of the Colorado Desert at a distance of about 60 miles east of Indio, California. At the present time, this mine is producing at the rate of 5,000,000 tons of concentrate per year. A total of 1,000,000 tons of ore per year is presently being sold on the Japanese market while the remainder is consumed by the Kaiser Steel Company blast furnaces at Fontana, California. A new Pellet Plant and Concentrator is presently under, construction with completion scheduled for May or June 1965. This plant will have a rated capacity of 2,200,000 tons of pellets per year and essentially all of this production will be sold to Japanese steel companies.

It is easy for a coal spokesman to relate to the theme of this meeting--that the decade of the 1970&apos;s is pivotal for the mineral industries. For the coal operator, this period is crucial. The coal industry, according to most energy forecasters, must gear its production machinery to meet a sharp rise in the demand for coal--in this decade to sustain inevitable boosts in electricity output, and in the next to start supporting a big new domestic synthetic fuels industry that is already in the formative stage. The logic of that projection flows from a combination of hard circumstances--proved reserves of domestic fluid fuels are dwindling, the hope for bountiful and cheap nuclear power must be indefinitely deferred, and the threat of long-term fuel imports to the national interests is becoming starkly visible. Only coal, with its assets of abundance, security and versatility, offers the nation an adequate and immediate lift out of its current energy crisis. A hard-won expansion of coal production made the critical difference between local power load-shedding and major area blackouts in 1970, the year the energy crisis went public. Coal will have to play that same key role, not just through this pivotal decade but through the turn of the century. But the logic of fuel demand apparently does not always extend to supply. The coal industry has had a huge production job laid out for it by the energy statisticians, but up to now the energy policy-makers have not followed through with the aids and inducements that the coal operator urgently needs to do that job well and completely.

In 2024, Capstone Copper Corp commissioned a new sulfide flotation plant at Mantoverde in the Atacama region of Chile to process copper ore at a design rate of 32,000tpd. The pyrite associated with the copper ore body contains cobalt in solid solution, with Co replacing Fe in the pyrite matrix. As per the existing sulfide flotation flowsheet most of the pyrite is depressed and sent to tailings via the cleaner scavenger tail stream. A new project considers the recovery of the pyrite from the cleaner-scavenger tails via froth flotation to produce a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate, which is then leached via the existing dynamic copper leach pad to oxidize the pyrite and dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt is recovered from the solution by treating a bleed stream of copper SX raffinate through a continuous, counter-current ion exchange (CCIX) facility. This approach to by-production of cobalt confers numerous benefits, including reduced costs compared with alternative cobalt recovery processes, reduced acid consumption in the heap leach, increased copper production, and reduced acid mine drainage potential due to the removal of pyrite from the mill tailings.

It would be most difficult to place a date on the beginning of the revolution in analytical techniques that we have witnessed in recent years; but there is no question that the period since the end of World War II has seen a major change in thinking with respect to control and accounting analyses. For reasons relating to competition, much of this change was brought about in the chemical industries and only more recently has begun to affect directly the mineral industries. In considering the subject outlined in the title of this paper, one might well be tempted to discuss solely the more exotic methods of control and automation which have come into being in the past short while. In this paper, however, an attempt will be made to take a broader view and consider not only the application of newer purely physical methods of control but also those phases of chemical plus physical analyses that have bearing on our industry.

The Atlanta Plane Train Tunnel West Extension was excavated at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport using Sequential Excavation Methods (SEM). At its shallowest point, tunnel cover to bottom of Domestic Terminal footings was limited to 6 feet in soft ground. To mitigate risk of excessive building movement due to tunneling-related activities, the columns near the alignment were directly underpinned. Underpinning was accomplished using a combination of grouted mini-piles, installed under low headroom conditions, that supported steel framing spanning over the tunnel excavations. This paper focuses on design and construction of the underpinning system used to mitigate risk from tunneling.

The estimated total energy demand for the U. S. is 60 quadrillion BTU for 1970 and is expected to more than double by the year 2000. Today the energy crunch is here. It is evidenced by brownouts to conserve electrical energy, and the shortage of gas and oil. Many such headlines, including suggestions for energy rationing, are in the news today. Paradoxically we have an abun¬dant source of energy in the form of coal. Energy consumers, however, are geared to use fuel in other forms. It is the intent of this presentation to discuss processes under development for conversion of the energy contained in these vast coal reserves to more usable forms. Coal conversion to synthetic fuels should be of particular interest to those engaged in mining. Coal consumption in a single conversion plant is expected to range from 10,000 to 40,000 tons per day. Plants will be located at the mine mouth and will operate continuously 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Further, many such plants will be needed., For example, looking at natural gas only, the supply/demand gap is estimated to reach 13 trillion cubic feet per year by 1985. Assuming that gas from coal conversion were to fill only 101, of this gap, 15 plants producing 250 MMSCFD would be required. These plants would consume about 90 million T/Y of coal or 135 million T/Y of lignite. It will indeed be a challenge to mine, suitably prepare, and transport coal at these projected volumes without interruption. Many ideas have been conceived for better utilization of coal and these are in various stages of development. Those supported by public money are covered by the Annual Report of the Office of Coal Research (OCR), Department of Interior. The two processes to be discussed, the Consolidation Coal Company&apos;s (Consol) C02 Acceptor Process (1)(2)(3) and The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company&apos;s (PAMCO) Solvent Refined Coal Process (4)(5) are both sponsored by OCR.
