The Cyprus Thompson Creek Mine is located at 2,286m (7500 feet) elevation in the Central Idaho mountains, 61.16 kilometers (38 miles) southwest of Challis, Idaho off State Highway 75. The Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit lies near the eastern border of the late Cretaceous Idaho Batholith within a complexly deformed sequence of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Molybdenum mineralization is contained in a composite biotite granodiorite-quartz monzonite stock considered to be genetically related to the Idaho Batholith intrusive event. The ore is being mined by open pit methods and delivered to the concentrator stockpile with an overland conveyor belt system. The concentrator is designed as a 22,680 metric tons (25,000 ton) per day plant at an average head grade of 0.1% Molybdenum.

"INTRODUCTION While the United States coal mining uses prescriptive regulation under the Title 30 Code of Federal Regulation enforced by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Australia uses a risk based approach. Australian regulation is individual to each state. In Queensland, Australia this risk based approach to address principal hazards is underwritten by the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Act of 1999 and the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation of 2001. Each Queensland Mine is required to have an overarching Health Safety and Environment Management System, of which Safety Management Plans are an element. “Safety Management plans (SMP’s) are intended to formalise the process by which mines address principal hazards and other related matters to ensure the safety of mine personnel.”7 THE QUEENSLAND CONTEXT In Queensland, the basic elements of a coal mine’s safety and health management system must provide for risk identification and assessment, hazard analysis, hazard management and control, and the reporting and recording of relevant safety and health information and data.5 (Part 2 Division 1 Section 6(a-d)) The initial guidance for writing Safety Management Plans comes from the Approved Standard for Mine Safety Management Plans and Guidance Note QGN09- Reviewing the Effectiveness of Safety and Health Management Systems. The Guidance Note and Approved Standard are supplemental to the Act and Regulation, and put in place to provide more clarity around the topic. The definitions in this section come from the Approved Standard and are included to provide context for those who may not be familiar with Australian or Queensland law and regulation. A hazard is defined as a source of potential harm or a situation with a potential to cause loss, while a principal hazard is a hazard with a potential to cause multiple fatalities. A risk is the chance of something happening that will have an impact upon objectives which is measured in terms of consequences and likelihoods. It is important to be able to make the distinction between a hazard and a risk. For instance, a lion is a hazard, while the risk associated with a lion is getting eaten. As defined by the Queensland Approved Standard for Mine Safety Management Plans, a Safety Management Plan (SMP) requires a systematic definition of all the actions necessary to ensure that mining operations are carried out safely. A SMP includes, but is not limited to organisational structures, planning, activities, responsibilities, practices, risk identification, audits and reviews.7 The goal of a SMP management plans is to mitigate the risks to bring them to an As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) level."

"As engineers, we are trained to use logical, rational problem solving to insure our mines operate at maximum efficiency. We tend to use the same technical approach to design safety into all mining systems. This works well for machines, but not so much for the human component. Recent insights in the field of behavioral economics provide useful ideas for addressing the fact that we are driven by emotions more often than by rational thought. Understanding the nonrational aspect of human behavior is an important piece of any safety system design. INTRODUCTION The most common economic model is based on humans making rational decisions; that given the proper information, we will make a logical, rational decision based on what is best for ourselves (Ariely, 2009, p. xviii). In many cases this is an accurate description of how we make decisions. As an engineer, I was trained to apply the precision of mathematics and logic to solve problems. As an engineering professor, I now teach this approach to bright young minds preparing them for a life of professional effectiveness as practicing engineers. That said, we are not only rational. Daniel Kahneman, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, describes a model for how we think (Kahneman, 2011). System 1 is the part of our mind that is fast, intuitive, and emotional; while our logical, slower, and deliberative mind is System 2. According to Kahneman’s model, System 1 runs automatically, most of what you think and do originates in System 1. System 2 takes over when things get difficult, including the application of math and logic, and the resolution (or avoidance) of conflict. As engineers, we would typically assume that we operate in System 2 mode most of the time. This is where the model becomes useful, for Kahneman points out two important aspects of the dynamic between the two systems in our mind. First, System 1 has biases, systematic errors that lead to answering questions with an easier answer (rather than a right answer) before System 2 is engaged. Second, we can be blind to the obvious, and also be blind to our blindness. Complicating things further, System 1 cannot be turned off (Kahneman, pp. 24-25)."

On the Earth's Moon, obvious hazards to humans and machines are created by extreme temperature fluctuations, low gravity, and the virtual absence of any atmosphere. The most important other environmental factor is ionizing radiation. Less obvious environmental hazards that must be considered before establishing a manned presence on the lunar surface are the hazards from micrometeoroid bombardment, the nuisance of electro-statically-charged lunar dust, and an alien visual environment without familiar clues. Before man can establish lunar bases and lunar mining operations, and continue the exploration of that planet, we must develop a means of mitigating these hazards.

As in other areas of the country, surface coal mine productivity in the Central Coal Province--primarily Illinois, Indiana, and west Kentucky--has declined steadily since 1969 (figure 1). Productivity, as measured in tons of clean coal produced per man-shift, dropped 35 percent during the period 1969-1975. Unwelcome at any time, this phenomenon is particularly untimely now, when increased coal production is a national goal. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been working with the coal industry to develop new operating methods and equipment to enable increased productivity and improved reclamation performance in surface coal mining. Several projects have involved identification and evaluation of existing overburden handling and reclamation practices, and development of means to improve operational procedures. Some results of one of those projects, as they apply to the Central Coal Province, are summarized in this paper.

Laboratory investigations on the possibility for magnetic separation of sulphide minerals are reported. A survey of several sulphide ores and flotation concentrates shows that magnetic separation in most cases is not a suitable primary method of beneficiation. However encouraging results have been obtained in concentrate purification. At the Boliden complex sulphide ore concentrator in Garpenberg a Allis-SALA MK III carousel High Gradient Magnetic Separator (HGMS) is used together with a small flotation circuit to recover sphalerite lost to the galena concentrate in lead flotation. The result after four years of refining the HGMS process, show increasing zinc recovery and enhanced quality of the lead concentrate.

The Putnam Coal Mine, at design capacity, will be the third largest underground bituminous coal mine in the world and will feature the world's longest single flight belt conveyor. Construction is now in process; initial mining will commence in early 1969 and design capacity will be reached in 1971. I'm Jerry Workman, Assistant Mining Manager for the Coal Group of the Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide Corporation, and I am acting as Project Manager for installation and start-up of the Putnam Mine. The Putnam Coal Mine reserves are located in south-central West Virginia and contain approximately 27,000 acres of prime Pittsburgh No. 8 coal; reserves are sufficient to support a 3.5 MM tons per year operation for over 30 years. The mine portal area is located some six miles inland from the Kanawha River. The river loading facility is located approximately 156 miles by way of river from the market.

Wollastonite, a calcium metasilicate, derives its name from the man who discovered the mineral, Doctor William H. Wollaston, an English scientist. OCCURENCE Occurences of the mineral have been noted in Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Mexico and in the United States in Texas, California, Arizona, and New York. The only commercial deposit now being exploited is at Willsboro, New York. It is mined and processed by the Cabot Corporation whose home offices are in Boston, Massachusetts.

The extraction of industrial minerals is usually confined to relatively small mining operations. The recent COSMAR (Committee on Surface Mining and Reclamation) report found that 93% of all mines in the United States were of the small unit variety. Also, of the total number of mines in the U.S. (15,279) 96% were in the industrial minerals (non-metals excluding coal) category. To break it down further, 86% were sand and gravel, and crushed stone operations. Therefore, we are talking about a very large number of small mining operations. If these small miners can afford to hire a college graduate, what kind of training should this person have beyond the normal mining engineering curriculum to best serve the problems that he or she will encounter?

When Homestake Mining Company's Mclaughlin Gold Project was being evaluated for development, it was apparent that recovery of gold from mined ore would be difficult and relatively expensive. The ore was refractory, averaging less than 50% recovery in conventional direct cyanidation milling tests. Extensive testing narrowed the processing choices to either autoclave or roaster oxidation before cyanidation. Roasting was ruled out due to higher capital and operating costs --the Mclaughlin mill would be the first large-scale application of autoclave oxidation of a refractory gold ore.

The clays in Eastern Washington occur in a variety of forms and are extracted for uses in Face Brick, paper coatings, and aggregates. Not in large volumes in comparison to other areas, not even from impressive large mines. However, mans utilization of these clays has progressed from historical clay tablets to the present technically oriented manufactured products of today. White Face Brick, perhaps the whitest produced anywhere is the unique product produced by INTERPACE CORPORATION's Mica Plant from these unusual clays. It is this basic characteristic feature of the clay's in the Mica area that differentiate them from the other clay's in this belt. ORIGIN The significant properties of clay's used in Face Brick are plasticity, fired color, fired strength, dry and fired shrinkage, the PCE or Pyrometeric Cone Equivalent, and extrudability. Testing clay's for these properties is standard laboratory procedure. No two clays are alike, and seldom can one clay be substituted for another. Mica White Clays respond favorable to all these properties, but more especially, the Mica Clays fire to a brilliant white color, from almost the natural state. The geologic history of Eastern Washington is largely conjectural because of the absence of rocks representing segments of geologic time. The oldest rocks in this area are the argillaceous and arenaceous sedimentary rocks which have been slightly metamorphosed. These rocks have been correlated with the Belt Series of the Pre-Cambrian age, although some may be older. Health and Safety in the work place is of primary concern to the underground coal industry. Control of dust in the underground environment is of major importance in this concern. Utah Power and Light Mining Division has undertaken extensive studies to determine and control the various sources of respirable dust in underground high production sections. Determination of dust sources has been achieved by real-time aerosol sampling and standard gravimetric sampling on individuals and in various suspect locations. Some sources are diesel roadway dust, outby crushing, and handling equipment, face sloughing, water spray roll-back, and mining equipment. Once identified, the dust sources are suppressed or controlled and/or the workers are directed from areas of greatest potential exposure.

"While many classic mineral processing circuit design approaches rely on deterministic methods, numerous studies have shown that the uncertainty inherent to the various input parameters can significantly influence design decisions. In a separation circuit, many of the technical uncertainties can be mathematically represented as statistical distributions for the unit recovery and feed grade. These uncertainties are then propagated by the circuit design and reflected in the circuit performance indicators, such as product grade and global recovery. An effective design strategy entails identifying which units are most influential in this uncertainty propagation and thus merit further consideration. Unfortunately, few analytical tools provide this information, particularly those that rely solely on deterministic methods. However, one promising approach is through the application of Taguchi’s method, in a fashion similar to statistical tolerancing of manufactured products. Since the technical challenges are fundamentally similar, Taguchi’s method shows promise in evaluating the level of compounded uncertainty by various circuit designs while determining the role of each separation stage on the overall selectivity and variability of separation circuits. This paper demonstrates Taguchi’s method in several two and three unit circuit designs. INTRODUCTION AND METHOD DESCRIPTION Uncertainty in Mineral Processing Circuit Design Analysis and estimation of uncertainty propagation in mineral processing separation circuits is an essential and significant aspect of an optimal circuit design procedure. Most of the current circuit design methodologies have been constructed, implemented, and validated using a deterministic modeling approach. However, numerous studies have shown that the inherent uncertainty induced by uncertain design parameters can be a significant factor in many mineral processing applications (e.g. Kraslawski 1989; Xiao and Vien 2003; Ghaffari et al. 2012). Thus, an effective circuit design methodology must be able to quantify uncertainty in separation circuits with limited input data. This paper describes Taguchi’s method, as an experimental design technique, to approximate uncertainty in mineral processing applications, and then the similarity of results between Taguchi’s method and Monte Carlo Simulation is investigated. Monte Carlo Simulation The term “Monte Carlo Simulation” has been used to refer to a variety of stochastic simulation methods spanning a broad array of business, technical, and scientific domains. Most generally, Monte Carlo Simulation refers to numerical analysis which is based on (pseudo) random sampling from a domain of input parameters with a known statistical distribution. This methodology allows one to determine the distribution of expected results from a standard deterministic process model. Execution of a Monte Carlo simulation begins by identifying the domain of input parameters, statistical distributions for each parameter, and a deterministic process model which describes the anticipated result as a function of the inputs. Next, one discrete random sample is taken for each input parameter, considering the input distributions. The process model is then solved for this mix of input parameters, producing a single simulation result. This procedure is then repeated a “large” number of times, utilizing new randomly sampled input parameters for each simulation iteration. Once the desired number of iterations is reached, the results of each independent simulation are aggregated to produce descriptive statistics such as minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, kurtosis, and other distribution parameters. Given enough iterations, the Monte Carlo method fully explores potential synergies between the input parameters. Epidote is a common hydrothermal alteration product in many copper deposits of the southwestern United States. In many of these deposits epidote, along with calcite and chlorite, generally characterize a distal or halo propylitic alteration assemblage, but the mineral can occur within the central potassic alteration zone as well. Epidote is also a common alteration mineral in deposits formed in calcareous host rocks -- the skarn or pyrometasomatic ore bodies. Within the past 15 years, studies of the major and trace element composition of other alteration phases, principally biotite, associated with base metal ore deposits have demonstrated that some hydrothermal alteration minerals are compositional distinct from their igneous or metamorphic counterparts: However, the use of major and minor element content to identify and zero in on mineral¬ized areas does not appear to be very promising. Little work has been published upon the geochemistry of epidote from this standpoint and the results of my work suggest that a similar conclusion can be applied to epidote. My work (Fellows, 1976) suggests that epidote minerals in hydrothermal alteration suites from porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern United States are generally iron-rich rather than aluminum-rich. As a group, these alteration minerals differ compositionally from epidotes of regional metamorphic terrains. I ascribe these differences to the variations in the oxidation character of the respective environments. A laboratory experimental research project was conducted to evaluate the use of chlorine for the oxidative destruction of residual ammonia which may remain in ground water after in-situ uranium solution mining operations. The work tested the idea of the injection of high strength calcium hypochlorite solution into the mining zone to convert ammonia to nitrogen gas as a final clean-up process for ammonia removal from the ground water system. The paper details ammonia removal efficiency as a function of chlorine dose, reactant and product material balances, and how the concept may be used as a final ground water restoration process.

Refractory ores and concentrates containing silver tend to form Ag-jarosite during autoclave oxidation. Silver extraction from the oxidation products is therefore low, unless a hot lime treatment step to decompose Ag-jarosite precedes cyanidation. Since silver iodide is very stable but soluble in cyanide solutions, the formation and decomposition of Ag-jarosite in the presence of iodine species was studied. Results indicate that Ag-jarosite formation could be prevented in favour of H3O-jarosite and AgI while oxidizing Ag2S under industrial autoclaving conditions, when the total iodine species to Ag mole ratio exceeded 5. Lower ratios gave proportionally more Ag-jarosite and less AgI. Under these conditions existing Ag-jarosite was also found to decompose in H30-jarosite and AgI.

A parametric study was conducted to establish the optimum operating conditions for the column flotation of fine coal. The parameters examined in this investigation included collector and frother dosages, feed solids content, and the volumetric flow rates of feed slurry, air and wash water. Despite the wide range of conditions studied the experimental data were found to fall along single grade-recovery curves, just below the maximum separation predicted by the release analysis technique. The deviation of the parametric test data from the release curve was attributed to the nonselective entrainment of mineral matter associated with poor froth washing. The operating point on the characteristic recovery-grade curve was found to be primarily determined by feed rate and aeration rate.

"INTRODUCTION Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting both appropriate systems and the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation. Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights on the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement over the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is not often available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available it requires a major time and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support. Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This paper focuses on the optimization of the cable bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

This paper discusses design and construction aspects of the tunnel, shaft and station for the Weehawken Tunnel and Bergen line Avenue Station. The project consists of a 1,269 m (4,156 ft) long existing railroad tunnel, which will be enlarged and equipped with a two-track light rail system. The project also includes construction of a deep underground station, with a large shaft connecting the surface station to the below ground station for access and ventilation purposes. Vibration and noise from blasting is a critical community issue and blasting adjacent to two 230-kV duct banks located in the tunnel invert required special blasting procedures.

The production of portland cement requires that four basic elements -- calcium, silica, alumina and iron -- be ground to a fine powder, homogenized, and fed to the pyroprocessing unit, where it is burned to a cement clinker. The raw material must either be ground wet in a slurry form or dried and ground to a dry powder, with a fineness of approximately 85% passing the 200 M screen. According to the Portland Association's Plant Information Summary, approximately 38% of the U.S. capacity is ground wet and 62% ground dry.
