Freeport Indonesia consists of surface, civil and underground mining areas exposed to numerous geotechnical risks and hazards. PTFI uses various monitoring systems (Micro-Seismic, Firefly Light System, Mira Geoscience machine learning, etc.) to effectively manage these risks. The significant volumes of data from these sensors must be integrated into actionable information to provide the expected risk management. This occurs at the GeoEngineering Integrated Monitoring Centre (GIMC), a centralized department within the GeoEngineering Division, tasked with the responsibility to manage all geotechnical monitoring systems. The main hazard the GIMC is responsible for managing in real time is mine seismicity within the underground mining areas and the potential impacts on safe operations. Seismic system engineers achieve this objective through 24 hours a day and seven days a week operations of the GIMC, providing a centralized point of communication, alerts, evacuations and control during seismic events and emergencies. This paper will describe how the GIMC achieves its goal using reliable procedures and strategies based on detailed Triggered Action Response Plan (TARP), concise communications, novel technologies (FireFly Lighting System), and proven seismic re-entry programs to manage risk within the underground mining operations. The integration of geotechnical monitoring and reporting into a centralized group has improved the effectiveness and management of seismic risks and hazards at PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mining operations.

Accurate engineering predictions of energy needs for pollution control equipment used in surface mining operations is critically important to sound management selection of control alternatives. This paper will describe a procedure for evaluating two control alternatives with different energy needs. Three steps are involved: an analysis of the pertinent regulations, a determination of the size distribution of the particles being emitted, a calculation of the energy needs and costs of the candidate control systems as a function of these regulations and emission characteristics. The principal air pollutant to be controlled in surface mining operations is particulates, or dust, some of which is already on the material introduced into the primary crusher and other dust which is generated by the various steps in the subsequent processes. The requirement for control stems both from regulations concerning workers at the operating site, and the community surrounding the operations. In order to speak quantitatively about the need for control we will use regulations that pertain in Pennsylvania although it must be borne in mind that such regulations vary according to juristiction.

The disposal of sludges and other similar industrial wastes is a major problem. Liquid wastes from industrial operations, when treated, produce significant volumes of sludge which are difficult to dispose of, because of the chemical and physical properties of the sludge. In the mining industry sludge is produced from various water treatment operations, in particular mine drainage neutralization. Waste water from coal preparation plants also produces a sludge however the sludge is in fact a slurry containing clays, coal fines and coal impurities. In many areas the disposal of these sludges is producing a serious problem. "INTRODUCTION Grade control requirements for base and precious metal projects are an important input to both conceptual and feasibility mine plans. It’s the author’s experience that grade control input is insufficient at these critical stages. The few exceptions are a stimulus for this paper. A significant portion of CRC’s practice has involved assisting operations to solve grade control issues which were finally recognized as contributing to negative production variances. Even in operations perceived to be successful, deficiencies in grade control are often masked by measures taken by an operation to compensate a deficiency in one area with outperformance in another. The advantages in having a realistic and adequate grade control plan developed at an early project stage by a geologist(s) with considerable operations experience are manifold. It’s important for the geologist to prepare clear inputs into the mine plan backed by detailed supporting information in usable, flexible formats. When the decision is made to advance a project, the exploration team passes its model to a mine planner. The team doesn’t usually provide a detailed grade control plan with the block model, thus the planner tends to treat grade control as an activity to be rolled into a broader operating category. The consequences of highly compartmentalized mine planning can be severe in the long run. Once a plan is tabled, and especially once production begins, it is very difficult to improve grade control outside the fixed parameters of the operation. Major fixes tend to be costly in terms of time and dollars. Implementing needed changes to the grade control practices and culture in an established mine can present almost insurmountable difficulties. Hypothetical examples of grade control planning are presented to illustrate the author’s points. The diagrams are conceptual and schematic; any resemblance to actual deposits is coincidental. BEYOND 50¢/TON In more than a few cases, grade control cost is buried in a subcategory of mining cost with little more consideration than a plugged number. It is possible to do a word search in 43-101 Technical Reports on advanced projects and without finding reference to “ore control” or “grade control”. The idea is to reach the orebody by the shortest and least expensive means, achieving production and investor payback at the earliest possible occasion. This entails a low stripping ratio pit or a decline ramp with sills on ore to prepare the first stopes. The processes to achieve the target production, one of which is grade control, will fit into this framework. After all, there is a block model and the planner can see the grade and tons in each block. The exploration geologist whose responsibility was to bring a large percentage of the deposit into mineral resource owns the model and has released it to planning. Now comes the planning stage. Mine geologists haven’t been hired yet and they will be phased in with production. What could go wrong? Larger companies may have the geologists with operating depth who will be inserted into the mine planning discussions, but it’s not a given. Junior companies must often delegate the conceptual and detailed planning tasks to consultant groups. Is a senior-level grade control review part of the scope of work for the mine planning? If a good grade control plan is in place before the mine geology team is staffed, a key element of success is assured."

"The Phu Kham Cu-Au mine in Laos is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. The deposit is a complex and low grade Cu-Au porphyry ore. The rougher feed has a particle size distribution of 80% passing 110 µm, and the rougher concentrate is reground for cleaning to 80% passing 25 µm. The Cu losses in the cleaning circuit are primarily in the <12 µm fraction. A randomised paired ON-OFF test of magnetic conditioning in one of the two parallel cleaner 1 circuits was undertaken. The results showed that with magnetic conditioning there was approximately a 10% reduction in the <12 µm Cu distribution in the cleaner 1 tail to a 98% level of confidence. The Cu distribution in the <12µm fraction is a less variable measure of changes in the <12µm Cu recovery, therefore, this was used to evaluate the impact of magnetic conditioning. Subsequently, magnetic conditioning was installed in both cleaner 1 circuits and the plant results monitored after this installation. Comparing the plant results immediately before and after this installation showed that there was a 20% reduction in <12µm Cu losses to the cleaner tail. INTRODUCTION The Cu-Au, Phu Kham Mine (PKM) is located within PanAust's Phu Bia Mining Contract Area in Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital city, Vientiane. PKM is PanAust's flagship operation and the significant cash flow generated by PKM has supported PanAust’s growth, while contributing to a strong balance sheet. PKM comprises an open-pit mine and a conventional milling and flotation operation that produces and exports a Cu and precious metals concentrate. The concentrate contains around 23% Cu, 6 ppm Au and up to 35 ppm silver. Process Overview The PKM deposit consists of complex heterogeneous mineralogy horizons of Cu-Au stockwork and skarn mineralisation. It contains areas of soft-leached zones, overlying transition zones and supergene chalcocite dominant secondary Cu mineralisation and clay-rich gangue. Areas of high As and Zn also pose a challenge in treating the highly variable ore. In addition, hardness of the ore increases with deposit depth. The ROM is hauled to a primary gyratory crusher to produce a coarse ore stockpile with size distribution suitable for the 13 MW semi-autogenous mill. The SAG product feeds two parallel ball mills each equipped with a cyclone cluster producing a product particle size distribution of 80% passing 110 µm. The conventional flotation circuit consists of two parallel rougher banks. The rougher concentrates feed the regrind cyclone where the underflow is split and reports to two parallel, 3MW, M10000 IsaMills. The regrind mill discharge combines with the regrind cyclone overflow with a product particle size distribution 80% passing 25 µm and reports to the Jameson cell."

Lafarge Corporation&apos;s Texas Quarry, in Baltimore MD, achieved a substantial expansion of pit reserves by removing an inactive underground mine. The day lighting program, designed, and completed in 1997, open pit mined more than 400 meters of room and pillar workings which were originally developed to recover high brightness Calcium Carbonate. The project proved to be a challenge throughout its course as the pit plan was modified and successful daylighting techniques were developed to remove the mine without adversely affecting the safety of the operation, quality of the stone recovered, or negatively impacting the surrounding community. The design parameters and techniques developed and implemented at Texas may prove of interest to other operators as they are faced with daylighting opportunities. This article will detail the challenges we faced and the solutions which made the project a success.

At the RETC 1979 in Atlanta/Georgia it was reported about the beginnings of the Hydroshield system and the first site experiences. Since that time over 10 miles of tunnels in various diameters have been built with that system, and the discussion of the two most interesting projects will be the main topics of this paper. AURELIA TUNNEL, ROME In Rome, the railway system is going to be completed and modernized. Therefore, it is necessary to tunnel through the Roman hills. Part of the new railway system is the Aurelia Tunnel, located some 100 feet below the famous Via Aurelia Antigua, close to the Vatican. The double track railway tunnel has an internal diameter of 9.44 m and a length of 2.410 m. It runs through completely differing soil conditions. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this article is to outline the data requirements for selecting a proper underground mining method and to discuss the general steps taken in selecting that method. Determining the appropriate mining method is an iterative process that continues throughout the life of a mineral deposit. We will discuss the subject from the standpoint of a feasibility study, where a realistic assessment is necessary in order to determine investment merit. The feasibility stage of a project is that point where the drilling program has defined sufficient geologic reserves to consider mining the deposit but little or no underground development has been done. Primary parameters for consideration in choosing a mining method are 1) geometry of the deposit; 2) distribution of grade; 3) rock mass strength for the deposit, as well as the hanging wall and footwall; 4) mining cost and capitalization requirements; 5) mining rate; 6) type and availability of labor; 7) environmental considerations; and 8) other site-specific conditions. Of these parameters, the first four have the most impact on determining the general mining method to be employed.

Efficient separation of pyrite from other sulfides is of great importance for the metallurgical performance of flotation processes. In this work Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) were used to study the surface chemistry of pyrite in depression, activation and xanthate adsorption under conditions of controlled potential. Modifications of pyrite surfaces after treatment with depressants (lime, sulfur dioxide, sodium cyanide) and after activation with metal ions (Cu, Pb) were studied. The principal adsorption product identified on pyrite was dixanthogen whose formation started at about +0.15 V and +0.25 V (vs, SHE) in ethyl and amyl xanthate solutions, respectively. Copper xanthate was formed on copper(II) activated pyrite. Activation mechanism of pyrite by copper(II) salts is likely to be electrochemical where copper occurs as copper(I) on the surface of pyrite. Effective depression is achieved by sulfur dioxide and sodium cyanide. Depression at high pH is due to formation of iron(III) hydroxides. Calcium ions do not affect the electrochemistry but adsorb on pyrite and reduce the surface sites for dixanthogen adsorption.

Uranium exploration in the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming has been intensive since 1966 and in 1968 produced significant discoveries of reduced uranium ore by Humble Oil & Refining Company and others. Substantial reserves have been established in the area. High-grade carnotite ore was discovered in 1951 near Pumpkin Buttes in the central part of the basin (Fig. 1). Other mineralized areas were soon established from Pumpkin Buttes south to Monument Hill and Box Creek. Total production from these shallow oxidized deposits in the lower Eocene Wasatch formation was small. The AEC reports total production of 520,000 tons of ore averaging 0.19% U3O8. The authors are indebted to many people within Humble Oil & Refining Company and Esso Production Research Company for their assistance and guidance. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS The Highland ore deposit, discovered in 1968, is a large uranium occurrence located in the southern part of the Powder River Basin. Uranium mineralization consists of sooty, black uraninite and coffinite coating sand grains and is concentrated along the margins of Tertiary fluvial sandstones. Uranium was transported by oxidizing solutions roving through the buried sandstones and spreading into less permeable channel-edge sandstones to form typical rolls and tabular deposits. Unaltered sandstones are light gray to gray-buff where the sandstones have been oxidized, the colors are various shades of red, yellow, and yellowish brown. An Oligocene tuffaceous source for the uranium is proposed; however, leaching of the arkosic and tuffaceous host sediments may also have provided a source.

This paper reports on the behavior of mercury and its compounds during the thiosulfate leaching and recovery of gold. Thiosulfate solutions are shown to dissolve Hg0 and Hg2Cl2 to a similar extent as cyanide, but the leaching of HgS is significantly slower in thiosulfate solutions compared to cyanide. Hence, the use of thiosulfate may be an option for treating ores containing high levels of cinnabar, especially since the legislation concerning the discharge or sale of mercury is becoming more restrictive. The deportment of mercury during gold thiosulfate loading and recovery using a strongly basic anion-exchange resin was also studied. Although the mercury thiosulfate complex loads on the resin, the adsorption is weaker than for gold, with an equilibrium constant between gold and mercury of 51. Resin loaded with gold, mercury and copper was pre-eluted with thiosulfate (to remove copper) and eluted with a chloride and sulfite eluant. The majority of the mercury is eluted by the eluant and, hence, its deportment closely follows gold and the eluate would need to be treated to remove either mercury dur-ing or prior to gold electrowinning.

The adsorption behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions on to activated carbon has been studied. The gold loading capacity of the activated carbon used in the system and the recovery efficiency by the adsorption were examined. The parameters affecting the adsorption of gold on to activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, concentration of &apos;cation and anion as well as that of ammonia. It was found that the maximum gold loading on activated carbon used was about 10 kg of gold per ton of carbon. The recovery of gold by the adsorption from ammoniacal solutions was dependent upon the initial gold concentration in the solution. A recovery of 98% of gold was obtained on to the activated carbon under experimental conditions after 120 hour adsorption. It was also found that the initial adsorption rate was relatively fast compared to the whole period of the adsorption. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was measured to be 15.8 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of gold adsorption on activated carbon was controlled by pore diffusion.

A 4.5-mile-long, 96-inch-diameter outfall pipeline was constructed between North Texas Municipal Water District’s proposed Sister Grove Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility and the Stiff Creek Discharge Structure. Two TBM-mined tunnel segments were excavated for the outfall pipeline through rock and mixed-face conditions within the Austin Chalk Formation. The TBM mining performance was tracked in detail and evaluated during mining. This paper discusses the TBM configuration, TBM utilization, advance rates, and challenges of both tunnel segments.

Concentrations of minerals between 3.5 and 5 specific gravity such as ilmenite, rutile and zircon in large accumulations of sand constitute "heavy mineral" placers. Two fundamentally different modes of formation characterize "trap" and "bed" placer variants. Smaller and generally higher grade trap placers form during sediment erosion or reworking. Because of their smaller size, they rarely yield economic heavy mineral deposits. They become economic, either if they contain more valuable "heavies" such as gold, or, if they occur within or near much larger but lower grade bed placers. Bed placers form during sediment accumulation episodes in any environment and lithofacies where mineral supply and fluid dynamics are favorable. Three heavy mineral deposits are discussed to illustrate bed placer geology and how trap placers occur with and relate to them.

This paper defines the elements of a basic economic model for decision-making when considering a methane drainage system for an underground coal mine. A drainage system will require significant capital and operating expenses; hence the decision to utilize drainage must be made carefully. The model outlines the basic structure of decision-making and considers the costs and benefits when the methane is marketed and when the methane is vented to the atmosphere. The effects on mine safety and the dust levels in the mine are also considered, both in a general format and as economic variables. Sources of information for executing this decision-making are provided for an actual mine decision.

Land use is the single most important element affecting the quality of our physical environment. .The minerals industry is a user of land and by its very nature, directly affects the landscape. Mining is a very visible activity. Producers of sand and gravel, crushed stone, clay, cement and lime operate right at the interface of the public. These production sites must be located near population centers. People are more travel oriented than years ago and through use of the expanded interstate highway system visit remote and little-visited areas. They visit communities on their vacations, places they enjoy on weekends and places they drive past on business trips. Although not residents of these localities, they have a strong interest in changes that occur in the landscape. As a result, the public has a greater concern today about mining and its use of land. From 1930 through 1971, the minerals industry used 3.65 million acres, or 0.16 percent of the land mass in the United States (4)2/. Of the total 3.65 million acres utilized, about 59 percent was accounted for by the area of excavation, 20 percent by disposal of overburden and other mine wastes from surface mining, 13 percent by disposal of mill or processing wastes, and 5 percent by disposal of underground mine wastes; the remaining 3 percent was subsided or disturbed as a result of underground workings. Nonmetallic minerals and fossil fuels each accounted for 43 percent of surface land used during 1930-71; the metal mining industry utilized the remaining 14 percent.

Rare-earth elements have some unique properties that are used in many common applications, such as TV screens and lighters. In the 1970&apos;s, rare-earths began to be used in a new generation of magnetic materials that have very unique characteristics. Not only were these stronger in the sense of attraction force between a magnet and mild steel (high induction, B), the coercivity (He) is extremely high. This property makes the magnetization of the magnet body composed of a rare-earth element alloy very stable, i.e., it cannot easily be demagnetized.

The results of studies to ameliorate acid mine drainage by retarding the rate of oxidation of pyrite at source are discussed. In the transpassive region, pyrite oxidizes by reactive dissolution, mass transfer through the product layer and diffusion in the bulk solution. One can decrease the rate of pyrite oxidation by inhibiting either oxidation reactions or cathodic reactions. It is demonstrated in this study that some surface active reagents extend the passive region by affecting both the anodic and cathodic processes. The extension to higher potentials occurs by inhibition of the anodic dissolution process whereas to lower cathodic potentials through decrease in the rate of reduction of molecular oxygen and/or ferric ions. To retard the oxidation of pyrite by ferric ions, which is considered to be the dominant oxidant under conditions of acid mine drainage, it would be necessary to restrict mass transfer or promote complexation of ferric ions at the surface. Imidazoline based reagents were found to be most effective in meeting this goal.
